MAKNA SIMBOLIS ORNAMEN PINTU BLEDEG MASJID AGUNG DEMAK

The current study aims to describe the symbolical meaning in the ornaments of “Bledeg” Doorof Demak Great Mosque viewed from three aspects, namely contour, content, and context. Theresults of the study demonstrate that analysed from the aspect of contour, ornaments of“Bledeg” Door consist of several parts, namely the crown, dragon head, and vase. There areseveral motifs originating from Majapahit, namely the “tumpal” motif and the use of SuryaMajapahit symbol stylized as dragon's eyes. The colors used are red, green, and white. Interms of content, the tumpal motif is a symbol of relationship of human beings with God, thecrown motif is a symbol of virtue, the dragon head motif is a symbol of strength in spreadinggoodness, the vase motif is a symbol of religion, and the floral plant motif is a symbol offertility, while the red, blue, and white colors symbolize safety. Viewed from the context, themyth of Ki Ageng Selo when catching lightning comes to light which is visualized into asymbolic ornament. The ornaments of “Bledeg” Door of Demak Great Mosque symbolizes therelationship between human beings and God signifying their privilege to spread God'steachings.

Mass of the Ages 18–39: The Sudden Revival of the Tridentine Latin Mass and Lessons for a More Robust Post-Conciliar Theological Aesthetics in Liturgy

The Tridentine Latin Mass (TLM) is rapidly growing in popularity. The movement that has formed around it has grown so attached to it as to threaten the unity of the Catholic Church. I attended TLMs in multiple distinct settings, studied the worshippers’ ordinary theology, and proceeded hermeneutically using the Circle Method. The most useful insight to emerge from this is that the theological aesthetics of the post-Conciliar Mass could be more deeply symbolic and synergistic with Conciliar intellectual theology. The TLM’s aesthetics offer worshippers assurances of certainty, but these assurances are empty. Therefore, parishes should facilitate the self-expression of the faithful, both to foster engagement with mystery and to inspire liturgical aesthetics. From these expressions, contextually meaningful symbols will emerge, which, through communal discernment guided by the Holy Spirit, may prove worthy to the task of enhancing liturgical aesthetics.

The article is devoted to the study of things in the traditional ceremonial culture of Kyrgyz as an integral component of their profane and sacred existence, expressed through ritual and ceremonial practices. The relevance of studying the material world is determined by the role it plays as a link between the historical experience of the past and the new realities of modern life, which allows us to reconstruct the worldview of traditional society through the prism of modern research. The object of the study is a thing as an integral component of the traditional ceremonial culture of Kyrgyz. The subject of the study is the functional (utilitarian), symbolic and ritual meanings of a thing in the traditional ceremonial culture of Kyrgyz. In this regard, the purpose of this article is to reveal the unity of the functional (utilitarian), symbolic and ritual meaning of a thing based on examples from the ritual and ceremonial practice of traditional Kyrgyz culture, such as maternity, wedding and funeral services, through which a person joins collective values, goes through the process of socialization, thereby establishing a connection between the profane and sacred worlds. The semiotic status, essence and meaning of each thing in ritual culture is determined by the way it functions in ritual as a symbol, a keeper of meanings and a carrier of cultural memory.

Taking the Deer by the Antlers: Deer in Material Culture in the Balkan Neolithic

Prehistoric communities had strong ties with the animal world that surrounded them—animals were prey, sources of food, and raw materials, but also threats and mysteries, and certain animals often had an important place in the symbolic realm. With the process of domestication and the switch to animal husbandry as the main source of animal food, these relations changed considerably, and a certain dichotomy between “the domestic” and “the wild” may be noted in numerous past communities. When it comes to the Neolithic period in the Balkans, domestic animals had an important place in subsistence and economy, and it seems that cattle had a particularly prominent symbolic role. Wild species preserved some of their significance in both subsistence and symbolic realms, especially cervids (red deer, roe deer, and fallow deer). In this paper, the place of deer in the material culture of the Neolithic communities in the Balkans will be analysed: skeletal elements of deer were used for the production of diverse items, including non-utilitarian ones, or were part of ritual depositions, and deer representations are encountered in other materials, such as clay figurines. The symbolic meaning of deer cannot be reconstructed with certainty; however, it is probable that deer were tied with territoriality and the landscape.

Reasons and consequences of historical buildings and structures fragments' reuse

The article examines the peculiarities of the use of secondary raw materials in architectural and urban planning activities. The conducted research showed that the use of secondary raw materials is an established practice in architectural and urban planning activities. Surviving but no longer needed buildings and structures, their ruins, individual fragments of former architectural and urban planning objects, and construction materials extracted from them are subject to reuse. Pragmatic saving of time and materials is not the only reason for the integration of used elements in new buildings. Among the other conditionally positive driving motives of this practice: attempts to strengthen the political ambitions of modern powerful people, to draw symbolic parallels between different religions, to realize their own creative ambitions, to preserve the fragments of destroyed culture, and to perpetuate the collective memory of the inhabitants of certain territories. Unfortunately, the history of architecture preserves evidence that the re-use of architectural fragments can also be motivated by opposite, conditionally negative goals, such as contempt for the conquered state; contempt for another religion; superiority to the destroyed culture; fear of deposed but creepy mythical creatures; hatred of the persecuted people. The outlined motives determine the nature of behaviour with secondary raw materials and the result of its use. Respect and willingness to study lost objects of cultural heritage leads to the emergence of new interesting and meaningful architectural and urban planning solutions. Indifference, self-assertion, and aggression increase chaos and insensitivity to beauty and cause inappropriate project decisions, for which descendants are later ashamed. Because of the application of recycling practices in architectural and urban planning activities, historical buildings and structures do not lose their identity, acquiring a new symbolic meaning; turn into archaeological artefacts with an unknown past, or as depersonalized raw materials dissolve into newly created objects.

Makna Pupuh Pucung ‘Bibi Anu’ Pengiring Ritual Nelu Bulanin Masyarakat Hindu Bali

This research aims to determine the symbolic meaning of pupuh pucung entitled 'Bibi Anu' which is used as an accompaniment to nelu bulanin rituals. The data were taken from a video of the Nelu Bulanin ceremony from YouTube with the address https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=TTNtDppLjc0. The data were collected by applying the observation method through watching the video, transcribing the lyrics, reading, and note-taking the words or phrases that contain symbolic meaning. There were five stanzas of pupuh pucung used as data sources. This research used a qualitative approach. The analysis was carried out by applying the cultural-linguistic theory proposed by Palmer (1996). This research shows that the lyrics of 'Bibi Anu' use linguistic units like words and phrases with symbolic meaning as a means of expressing the beliefs of Balinese Hindu society. This research has proven that Pupuh Pucung ‘Bibi Anu’ not only accompanies the ritual but is an inseparable part of the ritual itself because the lyrics contain belief values as an inseparable part of Balinese culture.

Ethnomathematics: Exploration of Mathematical Concepts in the Gate of Jamik Mosque Sumenep

One of the goals of National Education is to create cultured human beings and appreciate the diversity of national culture. The approach to mathematics through cultural aspects is offered in ethnomathematics. This ethnomathematics research aims to reveal the mathematical concepts and cultural values inherent in the gate of the Sumenep Jamik Mosque. A qualitative method with an ethnography type was used in this research. Research data were collected through observation, interviews, documentation, and literature studies. The results showed the existence of mathematical concepts in the ornament of the Mosque Jamik Sumenep in fractal geometry, the idea of reflection on the transformation of geometry, ratio, and angle. Also, cultural values include the meaning of the swastika symbol, the T key motif, and the value of cultural acculturation. The findings of this study can be developed in learning tools and become a reference to be applied in ethnomathematics-based learning in the classroom.

Investigation of the Visual-Semantic Relations in Typography

The technological advancements initiated with the onset of the Industrial Revolution and persisting rapidly to this day continue to instigate profound transformations in societies, cultures, and even forms of governance, while simultaneously ushering in new perspectives and methodologies in the realms of art and design. In our age, the concept of language has ceased to be a mere means of communication and has adapted organically to the developing age by assuming certain missions and roles. These roles involve the articulation of narratives and meanings designed to integrate individuals into the existing capitalist system and manage their needs. This study examines the relationship between typography and language as a design element within the context of semantic arguments. The primary aim here is to analyze the semantic structures of typography as a design element, not only facilitating readability but also visibility, and to dissect them from a semantic standpoint, from parts to the whole. In doing so, it aims to uncover the effectiveness of typography as a tool for perception management. The presented data is anticipated to provide designers, particularly, with methods to enhance the use of typography in conveying messages, meanings, and relationships with the reader, thereby increasing efficiency in terms of conveying meaning and offering various approaches to enhance semantic productivity. The aim of this study is to position the semantic relationships between the meanings of typographic elements used in graphic design products and how viewers visually perceive the typography used. Thus, the exploration aims to discover how visually symbolic meanings created with typography can be utilized as a more effective form of communication.

Babah Alun Mushola at Taman Suropati Menteng Jakarta is one of the 7 Islamic prayer places which initiated by Jusuf Hamka. Babah Alun Mushola placed on the upper floor police station building at Taman Suropati Menteng Jakarta . According to Jusuf Hamka, the architecture of this Building was designed with application of Betawi, Chinese and Dutch Colonial cultural architectural elements. This research aims to determine the application of those signs through Pierce’s semiotic theory to identify the architectural elements of the Babah Alun Taman Suropati mushola. This research was carried out using a descriptive qualitative approach, by observing the details of the cultural architectural elements at the Babah Alun Taman Suropati mushola. The research exploring the form, function and symbolic meaning of the application of the cultural architecture elements. It is hoped that the research results can become a reference in designing building designs that apply cultural architectural elements

The purpose of the article is to study the semantics and role of color symbols in the verbal description of national heraldry, and its relevance is due to the current trend towards an increase in the number of independent states with their own national symbols. The objectives of the research include determining the semiotic specificity of the color symbol, establishing the object prototypes motivating this symbol and identifying new concepts and ideals symbolized in modern national heraldry with the help of color. The study was carried out on the material of the state emblems of countries united by a common language of blazoning, using the technique of analyzing color images. It has been established that in color symbolism there are two types of semiotic units: symbols in which the image refers to some natural standard of color that motivates color, and symbols in which the connection between the expression and the content planes of the semiotic formation turns out to be conventional and conditioned exclusively by cultural tradition. In most cases, the appearance in national heraldry of a particular color or shade of the latter is determined by the taste preferences of the compiler of the coat of arms, but sometimes the symbolic meaning of the color in the blazon is explicitly stated. The content plane of color symbols, which receive an explicit interpretation in state heraldry, is represented both by specific objects, which act here as prototypes motivating the symbol, and by concepts of one or another level of abstraction, and the connection of these concepts with color is not figuratively motivated in any way and is determined exclusively by cultural traditions. The medieval list of secular and Christian virtues, to which the main heraldic colors refer, is supplemented by modern concepts and ideals in the state heraldry of today. At the same time, the black color as a symbol of sadness and mourning does not appear in state heraldry, and there is no purple color in the studied national heraldry. The results of the study lead to the conclusion that the color symbolism reflects the national, cultural and linguistic specificity of the countries that own the state emblem.

This article presents a comparative analysis of sacrifice, focusing on the Igbo-African traditional notion and the Christian understanding of sacrifice.The Igbo-African tradition views sacrifice as a means to establish and maintain a harmonious relationship with the divine. Sacrifice is seen as a reciprocal act, where offerings are made to deities or spirits in exchange for blessings and protection. In contrast, the Christian understanding of sacrifice centers around the sacrificial death of Jesus Christ, seen as an ultimate act of love and redemption. Jesus’ sacrifice is believed to reconcile humanity with God and provide salvation. While these traditions differ in their rituals and theological interpretations, they share a common goal of seeking a harmonious connection with the divine. This article explores the motivations, practices, and symbolic meanings associated with sacrifice in both traditions, aiming to deepen our understanding of the human quest for spiritual connection and the role of sacrifice in fulfilling this need.

Uncovering the tradition of shell ornaments in Neolithic Poland

The presented study explores shell ornaments discovered in Poland, investigating their role in Neolithic societies within spatial and chronological frameworks. We present a summary of our research findings encompassing raw material identification, procurement sources, ornament typology, shell selection, and trends in ornament use, along with their significance. The results of our study show that specific communities preferred particular shell species, sourced both locally and from distant regions. Moreover, some ornament types were distinctive and used exclusively by certain groups. This study sheds light on cultural dynamics, meaning, and social structures, shifting from a narrow focus on “exotic” shells to an increasing focus on local materials. Preferences for shell species and types are also shown to relate to settlement patterns, exchanges, and their symbolic meanings.

THE RITUAL OF WELCOMING TEVADA CHNAM THMAY: SIGNIFYING THE CIRCULATION OF GODS AND THE BEGINNING OF THE NEW YEAR TIME CYCLE OF THE KHMER PEOPLE IN SOC TRANG PROVINCE, VIETNAM

The ritual of welcoming Tevada Chhnam Thmay is a meaningful and indispensable event in the Khmer New Year. This ritual denotes the time of a year’s transition and welcomes the new Tevada. The research adopted the theory of symbolic anthropology proposed by Victor Turner to explain the meaning of ritual symbols and considers ritual symbols as a mechanism for maintaining traditional society. By employing the participant observation and sociological interview method conducted in Soc Trang Province, the study contributes to clarifying the appearance as well as the role and meaning of the Tevada Chhnam Thmay in the spiritual life of the Khmer people in Southern Vietnam.

Construction grammar and procedural semantics for human-interpretable grounded language processing

Abstract Grounded language processing is a crucial component in many artificial intelligence systems, as it allows agents to communicate about their physical surroundings. State-of-the-art approaches typically employ deep learning techniques that perform end-to-end mappings between natural language expressions and representations grounded in the environment. Although these techniques achieve high levels of accuracy, they are often criticized for their lack of interpretability and their reliance on large amounts of training data. As an alternative, we propose a fully interpretable, data-efficient architecture for grounded language processing. The architecture is based on two main components. The first component comprises an inventory of human-interpretable concepts learned through task-based communicative interactions. These concepts connect the sensorimotor experiences of an agent to meaningful symbols that can be used for reasoning operations. The second component is a computational construction grammar that maps between natural language expressions and procedural semantic representations. These representations are grounded through their integration with the learned concepts. We validate the architecture using a variation on the CLEVR benchmark, achieving an accuracy of 96 %. Our experiments demonstrate that the integration of a computational construction grammar with an inventory of interpretable grounded concepts can effectively achieve human-interpretable grounded language processing in the CLEVR environment.

Identified Tourist Attraction Management Based Environmental Education In A Provincial Community

Place identity attracts tourists visiting and touching the authentic beauty of attractions. It is a powerful instrument for symbolic meanings of landscape to embed at-homeness. The purpose of this study was to innovate a process of identified tourist attraction management based environmental education in a provincial community by multi-method research design. The research results indicated that the innovation regarding the process of identified tourist attraction management based environmental education was mainly comprised of five factors including (1) Sustainable Tourism, (2) Identification of Tourist Attractions, (3) Occupational Promotion, (4) Environmental Actualization, and (5) Environmental Participatory Management. The output appeared highly environmental literacy and the outcome reached tourist impressions that impact to community income and sustainable environments.

Research on the Creative Application of Memphis Style in Illustration Design

This paper explores the relevance of the use of dragon elements in illustration design and Memphis style visual design. Through the study of the symbolic meaning of dragon elements in different cultures and the origin and characteristics of Memphis style, combined with the actual case study of illustration design, this paper discusses the correlation and interaction between dragon elements and Memphis style visual design. Research has found that the clever incorporation of dragons in illustration designs, combined with Memphis-style geometry and bright colors, can create creative, unique and appealing visuals. These findings provide new creative ideas and inspiration for illustration design.

Bordering Inclusion and Exclusion in the Discourses of Marine Le Pen and Eric Zemmour

This paper focuses on the discursive construction of borders and discourses of exclusion and inclusion in French right-wing populist discourse. It elaborates on the idea of the politicization of borders in contemporary political communication and their symbolic meaning as an expression of national sovereignty, security, and identity. Using the approach of discourse analysis, the author investigates how bordering discourses were employed by Marine Le Pen and Eric Zemmour during the 2022 presidential campaign. The empirical analysis focuses on the parties’ programs, candidates’ discourses, and their social media communication. This offers valuable insights into how political actors construct borders and shape ‘us’ and ‘them’ groups.

Sintesis Produksi Puisi oleh Kecerdasan Buatan: Keterbatasan Fungsi Simbol dan Tanda Perspektif Semiotika Roland Barthes

<div class="container"><p><em>In recent years, the rapid development of Artificial Intelligence has significantly impacted various aspects of life, including the realm of creative writing in literature. One prominent application of AI is ChatGPT, which can synthesize poetry. However, questions have arisen regarding the extent of their ability to understand and replicate symbolic and sign meanings in literary works, particularly in poetry. This research aims to explore the intervention of artificial intelligence in the poetry creation process and identify limitations related to the use of symbolic and sign functions. Utilizing the perspective of Roland Barthes' Semiotics, this study delves into the symbolic meanings in poetry. The research employs a qualitative descriptive method with hermeneutic reading and content analysis of poetry, comparing it with human-authored poetry. The research data consists of poetry created by the artificial intelligence ChatGPT and human-authored poetry. The results indicate limitations in the ability of artificial intelligence to use symbols and signs in poetry, resulting in interpretations that are limited and tend to follow conventional patterns. Artificial intelligence often relies on common symbols and signs, frequently associated with existing cultural myths. Therefore, the role of humans in the creative process remains crucial in literary writing to ensure the diversity of symbols and signs, fostering the development of more innovative and profound interpretations in poetry.</em></p></div>
