Originally published in Contemporary Psychology: APA Review of Books, 1990, Vol 35(8), 821. Reviews the book, Handbook of Family Therapy, Training, and Supervision edited by Howard A. Liddle, Douglas C. Breunlin, and Richard C. Schwartz (see record 1988-98390-000). The book is divided into five sections: (1) an overview of the field, (2) models of training, (3) models of supervision, (4) description of training programs, and (5) special issues in supervision. As with many edited books, there is inconsistency in the quality of the writing, and the book suffers from a lack of integration. If the recommendations offered by these authors are followed, we can look forward to a more empirically based handbook in the future. Until then, I recommend this book to professionals who are involved in the process of family therapy supervision and for courses in this area.
