Tuning Interfacial Molecular Asymmetry to Engineer Protective Coatings with Superior Surface Anchoring, Antifouling and Antibacterial Properties

Multifunctional robust protective coatings that combine biocompatibility, antifouling and antimicrobial properties play an essential role in reducing host reactions and infection on invasive medical devices. However, developing these protective coatings generally faces a paradox: coating materials capable of achieving robust adhesion to substrates via spontaneous deposition inevitably initiate continuous biofoulant adsorption, while those employing strong hydration capability to resist biofoulant attachment have limited substrate binding ability and durability under wear. Herein, we designed a multifunctional terpolymer of poly(dopamine methyacrylamide-co-2-methacryloyloxyethyl phoasphorylcholine-co-2-(dimethylamino)-ethyl methacrylate) (P(DMA-co-MPC-co-DMAEMA)), which integrates desired yet traditionally incompatible functions (i.e., robust adhesion, antifouling, lubrication, and antimicrobial properties). Direct normal and lateral force measurements, dynamic adsorption tests, surface ion conductance mapping were applied to comprehensively investigate the nanomechanics of coating-biofloulant interactions. Catechol groups of DMA act as basal anchors for robust substrate deposition, while the highly hydrated zwitterion of MPC provides apical protection to resist biofouling and wear. Moreover, the antimicrobial property is conferred through the protonation of tertiary amine groups on DMAEMA, inhibiting infections under physiological conditions. This work provides an effective strategy for harmonizing demanded yet incompatible properties in one coating material, with significant implications for the development of multifunctional surfaces towards the advancement of invasive biomedical devices. Statement of significanceMultifunctional robust protective coatings have been widely utilized in invasive medical devices to mitigate host responses and infection. However, modified surface coatings often encounter a trade-off between robust adhesion to substrates and strong hydration capability for antifouling and antimicrobial properties. We propose a universal strategy for surface modification by dopamine-assisted co-deposition with a multifunctional terpolymer of P(DMA-co-MPC-co-DMAEMA) that simultaneously achieves robust adhesion, antifouling, and antimicrobial properties. Through elucidating the nanomechanics with fundamentally understanding the interactions between the coating and biomacromolecules, we highlight the role of DMA for substrate adhesion, MPC for biofouling resistance, and DMAEMA for antimicrobial activity. This approach presents a promising strategy for constructing multifunctional coatings on minimally invasive medical devices by tuning interfacial molecular asymmetricity to reconcile incompatible properties within one coating.

Enhanced antifouling and anti-swarming properties poly (sulfobetaine methacrylate-co-2-hydroxy-3-phenoxypropyl acrylate) hydrogel coatings for urinary catheters

Catheter-associated urinary tract infection (CAUTI) remains an unsolved challenge to date, particularly with the emergence and rapid spread of antimicrobial-resistant bacterial pathogens. Despite extensive research, a catheter coating that can offer intrinsic resistance to host protein deposition, bacterial biofilm formation, and swarming is still urgently required. Zwitterionic hydrogel coatings due to their superior lubricity and antifouling properties represent a promising candidate, but their weak mechanical stability in water and poor resistance to bacterial swarming migration limit their application in urinary catheters for infection control. In this research, we describe the fabrication of a multifunctional catheter coating by copolymerizing zwitterionic sulfobetaine methacrylate (SBMA) polymers and a swarming inhibitor material, 2-hydroxy-3-phenoxypropyl acrylate (HPA). The introduction of polyHPA (PHPA) effectively impeded the uncontrolled swelling behavior of the zwitterionic PSBMA hydrogel, resulting in enhanced mechanical stability. Moreover, the copolymer coating retains the antifouling and anti-swarming properties of the homopolymers when challenged with fibrinogen, Escherichia coli, and Proteus mirabilis. The HPA content significantly correlated with its anti-adhesion activity against fibrinogen and biofilm, and the coating with an SBMA: HPA monomer feed molar ratio of 4:1 showed the best antifouling activity, reducing fibrinogen deposition by about 40 % and biofilm coverage by around fourfold compared to the uncoated polydimethylsiloxane (PDMS) surface. Furthermore, the copolymer coating also exhibited no cytotoxicity, suggesting it as a promising catheter coating for preventing CAUTI.

Nickel-cobalt hydrogen phosphate membrane with outstanding anti-crude oil-fouling capability and its microscopic anti-fouling mechanism

Oil/water separation membranes with superior anti-fouling properties against highly viscous oils are crucial for the efficient treatment of oily wastewater. Herein, the effects of functional groups in an inorganic superhydrophilic membrane on the anti-fouling properties of the membrane are investigated. Using a facile one-step electrochemical deposition method, Ni1-xCoxHPO4·3H2O membranes were formed on a Cu(OH)2 microneedle-coated copper mesh (CCNC–P) with superhydrophilic and underwater superoleophobic properties. All CCNC–P membranes with different Co2+ contents showed outstanding anti-fouling capability for oily wastewater such as those containing crude oil. The CCNC–P(x = 0.5) membrane exhibited high separation efficiency reaching 99.7 % across five oil–water mixtures and oil-in-water emulsions, concurrently presenting an ultrahigh flux of 61695 L m−2 h−1 for crude oil–water mixture. Moreover, the membrane consistently maintained its separation performance during the long-term crude oil–water separation process. The flux decline ratio was below 1 %, and the flux recovery ratio approached 99.4 %. The CCNC–P membranes possessed superior chemical, thermal, and mechanical stability, suggesting significant potential for the industrial treatment of oily wastewater. Density functional theory calculation revealed that the HPO42− group in CCNC–P can strongly adsorb water molecules. The resultant stabilized hydration layer impeded the contact between the membrane surface and oil droplets, while the metal ions scarcely influenced the adsorption of water molecules on CCNC–P. These findings provide new insights into the development of novel oil–water separation membranes with higher anti-fouling capabilities against high-viscosity oils.

An imine-functionalized silicone-based epoxy coating with stable adhesion and controllable degradation for enhanced marine antifouling and anticorrosion properties.

Biofouling and corrosion of submerged equipment caused by marine organisms severely restrict the rapid development of the marine industry. Traditional antifouling or anticorrosion coatings typically serve a sole purpose and exhibit limited degradability upon failure, rendering them inadequate for current demands. Herein, a novel imine-functionalized command-degradable bio-based epoxy coating (SAHPEP-DDM) with enhanced integrated antifouling and anticorrosion performances was synthesized utilizing 1,3-bis (3-aminopropyl)-1,1,3,3-tetramethyldisiloxane and syringaldehyde. Compared with commercial epoxy resins (E51-DDM) and polydimethylsiloxanes (PDMS), the SAHPEP-DDM coating exhibits superior antifouling and anticorrosion properties due to the existence of -C=N- and Si-O-Si chain segments in the cross-linking network. The coatingshows promising resistance against bacteria, algae and proteins, as well as excellent corrosion resistance in artificial seawater. The coating also exhibits excellent chemical resistance in organic solvents as well as neutral and alkaline environments. Moreover, its controlled degradation afterfailure can be achieved in acid aqueous solutions through temperature and acidity adjustments, facilitated by the presence of -C=N-. This work presents a novel degradable coating successfully coupled the dual functions of antifouling and anticorrosion coatings, avoiding the employment of intermediate coat, indicating vast potential for application inmarine engineering fields.

Impact of titanium dioxide/graphene in polyvinylidene fluoride nanocomposite membrane to intensify methylene blue dye removal, antifouling performance, and reusability

AbstractThe development of efficient water purification technologies is a critical research focus driven by the crucial role of clean water sources for ecological sustainability. This study explores the strategic incorporation of nanoparticles within polyvinylidene fluoride (PVDF) membranes as a promising approach to enhance membrane performance for wastewater remediation. PVDF membranes containing varying ratios of graphene (GR) and titanium dioxide (TiO2) nanocomposites were fabricated via phase inversion method. Characterization techniques including XRD, FTIR, and FESEM‐EDX revealed that the 80% GR nanocomposite membrane exhibited desirable structural and functional properties with pronounced sponge‐like morphology and homogenous nanoparticle distribution. Fourier‐transform infrared spectroscopy and x‐ray diffraction analysis confirmed the 80% GR membrane retained PVDF crystallinity while uniquely eliminating TiO2 crystallinity. Subsequently, performance testing demonstrated the 80% GR nanocomposite membrane had the highest water flux and methylene blue dye rejection rates compared to other ratios and the pristine PVDF membrane. Both fabricated membranes exhibited sufficient reusability and antifouling properties. However, 80% GR ratio exhibited superior antifouling properties, indicating its potential as an optimal material for improving membrane hydrophilicity and overall water purification technologies. These findings underscore the strategic utility of GR‐TiO2 nanocomposites for enhancing PVDF membrane performance in sustainable wastewater treatment applications.

Enhancing performance and durability of PVDF-ceramic composite membranes in microbial fuel cells using natural rhamnolipids

Ceramic membranes are widely used in microbial fuel cells (MFCs) owing to their cost-effectiveness and availability. However, these membranes often face challenges such as biofouling and negative mass-transfer effects. This study explored the use of a polymer layer to mitigate these issues, focusing on a polyvinylidene fluoride (PVDF) nanofibre membrane with various surface modifications. The modifications included alkaline treatment (PVDF-OH), rhamnolipids treatment (PVDF/BS), and a combination of both (PVDF-OH/BS). The ceramic membrane integrated with PVDF-OH/BS achieved the highest power density of 13.8 W m−3, which was 38 % higher than that of the unmodified ceramic membrane. Additionally, during the long-term study (days 90–101), the Ceramic + PVDF-OH/BS maintained a 64 % higher power performance compared to the unmodified ceramic membrane, indicating superior antifouling properties. Electrochemical and surface characterisation revealed that rhamnolipid-modified PVDF nanofibers enhanced fouling resistance. The findings demonstrate that natural biosurfactants which can be produced in situ within MFCs, can form a protective layer over membranes and significantly enhance their long-term power performance. This study represents the first instance of using natural microbial biosurfactants to improve membrane efficiency in a bioelectrochemical system.

Construction of zwitterionic surface of PVDF hollow fiber membrane and the study on the mechanism of “autonomy-response” synergistic enhancement anti-fouling

In this study, polyvinylidene fluoride (PVDF)/styryl maleic anhydride (SMA) hollow fiber membrane was fabricated using the Thermally Induced Phase Separation (TIPS) technique. Subsequently, zwitterion-sulfobetaine methacrylate (SBMA) was introduced to the membrane surface through a Michael addition reaction to create a nearly electrically neutral membrane surface. This modification effectively mitigated the high adsorption of differently charged protein pollutants on the membrane surface, thereby enhancing its anti-fouling performance. Simultaneously, the membrane surfaces with positive and negative charges were separately constructed, and the impact of membrane surface charge properties on the anti-fouling performance against positively and negatively charged foulants was investigated. Furthermore, detailed studies were conducted on the chemical structure, surface morphology, performance, and anti-fouling mechanism of the modified membranes. The results indicate that the electrically neutral membrane modified by zwitterionic SBMA exhibited excellent anti-fouling properties against both bovine serum albumin (BSA) and lysozyme (LYZ), with a flux recovery rate (FRR) reaching 96.5 % and 94.6 %, respectively. The static adsorption capacities of BSA and LYZ on the membrane surface decreased to 5.89 μg cm−2 and 9.53 μg cm−2, respectively. Furthermore, the study investigated the structure of the hydration layer formed by zwitterionic SBMA on the membrane surface, as well as its hydration capacity and anti-fouling mechanism. Subsequently, through an assessment of the long-term stability of the modified membrane and its flux recovery rate (FRR), in conjunction with theories related to hydration layers and thermodynamics, it elucidated the anti-fouling mechanism involving “autonomy-response” synergistic enhancement of zwitterions. These findings will offer new strategies for researching hollow fiber membranes with superior anti-fouling properties and for applying zwitterions in membrane technology.

Superhydrophobic asymmetric pH-responsive soft actuators: Implications for the development of anti-fouling medical devices

Biomedical engineering strives for innovation to enhance the safety and effectiveness of medical tools, such as catheters and stents that need to be operated in confined spaces, with precise drug delivery control and should possess anti-fouling properties. Soft actuators with superhydrophobic surfaces can provide adaptable shape change together with non-fouling attributes required for medical devices. In this study, we have developed a Janus film with a hydrophilic solvent-responsive bottom and superhydrophobic top surface using a self-assembly strategy. The devised new strategy involves the dispersal of modified silica nanoparticles into a homogeneous solution, where they were segregated from the polymer matrix and self-assembled to form a superhydrophobic layer on the surface with a water contact angle of >150°. The resulting asymmetric actuator demonstrated bidirectional actuation in solvents with extreme pH values i.e., pH 1 and 13. It could be tailored for specific hydrophilicity by adjusting the ratio of dispersed superhydrophobic and hydrophilic silica nanoparticles in the polymer solution. These films exhibited exceptional chemical stability against strong acids, alkaline solutions, ethanol, and salt, as well as mechanical stability against abrasion from sandpaper. In vitro studies confirmed their superior anti-fouling and anti-bacterial properties. Furthermore, actuation of printed 3D structures with different patterns was demonstrated, showcasing the possibility of developing these superhydrophobic asymmetric surfaces via 3D printing and their potential as cardiovascular stents.

Polydopamine functionalized FeVO4@PVDF ultrafiltration membrane with superior antifouling and detoxification properties

The poly (vinylidene fluoride) (PVDF) based filtration has become a popular technology for efficient wastewater treatment and desalination. However, these PVDF membranes are prone to fouling and increase their usage cost. To address these drawbacks our study demonstrates a self-polymerized polydopamine (PDA) functionalized PVDF membrane loaded with FeVO4 through dead-end filtration blowing method with superior antifouling and visible light photocatalytic detoxification properties. Compared to pristine PVDF and FeVO4@PVDF, the PDA-FeVO4@PVDF demonstrated superior water flux, high BSA rejection and enhanced sulfamethoxazole detoxification efficiency. Addition of PDA and FeVO4 increased the adhesion, roughness, and hydrophilicity of the membrane leading to improved membrane durability and anti-fouling. The flux recovery rate (FRR) of the PDA-FeVO4@PVDF membrane was sustained very well even after 3 cycles with an FRR of 92.5 % compare to pure PVDF (72.5 %), and the irreversible fouling ratio (Rir) was also significantly decreased for the PDA-FeVO4@PVDF (7.4 %) compare to pristine PVDF (35.1 %). In addition, the prepared membrane has shown superior efficiency towards SMX with 94.3 % degradation within 3 h of visible light irradiation. Furthermore, based on the main ROS (OH, O2−, h+ and 1O2) and LC-ESI/MS analysis, the plausible degradation pathway was elucidated. The toxicity assessment analysis has shown that the significant detoxification of SMX was attained. In addition, DFT study revealed the strong interfacial interaction between PDA, FeVO4 and PVDF responsible for the improved activity. Thus, the present study provides new insights into the preparation of modified hydrophobic PVDF ultrafiltration membranes with self-cleaning and detoxification attributes via visible light photodegradation.

Design of U-shaped peptides with long-lasting antifouling efficacy: Toward a feasible electrochemical aptasensor for robust detection in human serum

BackgroundDeveloping biosensors with antifouling properties is essential for accurately detecting low-concentration biomarkers in complex biological matrix, which is imperative for effective disease diagnosis and treatment. Herein, an antifouling electrochemical aptasensor qualifying for probing targets in human serum was explored based on newly-devised peptides that could form inverted U-shaped structures with long-term stability. ResultsThe inverted U-shaped peptides (U-Pep) with two terminals of thiol groups grafted onto the Au-modified electrode showcase superior antifouling properties in terms of high stability against enzymatic hydrolysis and long acting against biofouling in actual biofluids. The construction of the outlined antifouling electrochemical aptasensor just involved the fabrication of Au-deposited poly(3,4 ethylenedioxythiophene) (Au/PEDOT) modified electrode, followed by one-step co-incubation in the peptides and the aptamer probes with the Au/PEDOT electrode. Taking a typical biomarker of alpha-fetoprotein (AFP) for detection, this elegant antifouling aptasenor demonstrated a nice response for probing the target AFP with a low detection limit of 0.27 pg/mL and a wide linear scope of 1.0 pg/mL to 1.0 μg/mL, and furthermore qualified for assaying of AFP in human serum samples with satisfactory accuracy and feasibility. SignificanceThis engineering strategy of U-Pep with long-lasting antifouling efficacy opens a new horizon for high-performance antifouling biosensors suitable for detection in complex bifluids, and it could spark more inspiration for a follow-up exploration of other featured antifouling biomaterials.

Fabrication of hollow fiber composite membranes via opposite transmission reaction method for dye/salt separation

The separation layer prepared by the conventional coating-crosslinking method is typically thick and prone to forming defective macropores, significantly affecting the water permeability and dye/salt separation performance of membranes. This work presented a novel method to prepare hollow fiber composite membranes for dye/salt separation based on the opposite transmission reaction of crosslinker. In this method, the macromolecule in situ reacted with a small‐molecule crosslinker at the openings of membrane pore channels, forming a separation layer with discontinuous sheet-like and granular structure. Compared to the conventional forward coating-crosslinking method, the separation layer prepared by the opposite transmission reaction method exhibited an ultra-thin thickness of 29.1 nm. Consequently, the composite membrane exhibited a high water permeability of 72.7 L·m−2·h−1·bar−1, which was 2.3 times higher than that of conventional methods. Moreover, the prepared composite membrane presented a more uniformed pore structure, completely retaining the VBB (100%) with a low Na2SO4 rejection of 4.3%, demonstrating excellent dye/salt separation performance. Additionally, the prepared composite membrane exhibited superior anti-fouling properties compared to that prepared by the conventional method. Therefore, the opposite transmission reaction method proposed in this study held promising applications in the preparation of hollow fiber composite membranes for efficient dye/salt separation.

Enhancing anti-fouling performance of ceramic membranes through iron oxide modification for the separation of oil-containing fermentation broth

Ceramic membranes are increasingly recognized for their effectiveness in processing fermentation broths. However, developing ceramic membranes with superior anti-fouling properties remains a challenge for large-scale applications. Iron oxide nanomaterials have gained significant research interest as a cost-effective and readily available solution for mitigating membrane fouling, thanks to their excellent hydrophilicity. This study introduces ceramic membranes enhanced with iron oxide via a facile sol-gel technique. The membrane's resistance to fouling, hydrophilicity, adhesion force, and surface potential were assessed. Post-modification, a consistent distribution of iron elements on the membrane surface was achieved, with negligible alteration in pore size. Although the pure water permeance (450 ± 45 L m−2 h−1·bar−1) did not change significantly, the permeance of the modified membrane (225 L m−2 h−1·bar−1) was nearly 20 % higher than that of the original membrane when separating a 1000 ppm oil-in-water emulsion, with both membranes achieving 99 % oil droplet rejection. Moreover, the flux recovery rate of the modified membrane surpassed that of the original membrane by approximately 30 %, indicating a significant improvement in anti-fouling performance. Upscaling experiments further validated the modified membrane's anti-fouling performance and capability to rapidly process broths with high oil content. Overall, this study presents a novel anti-fouling ceramic membrane for the treatment of oil-containing fermentation systems.

Construction of anti-fouling ceramic tubular membranes with corrugated inner surfaces using DLP 3D printing

The challenge of membrane fouling persistently hinders the advancement of membrane technology. The construction of patterned membrane surfaces is anticipated to mitigate the effects of membrane fouling significantly. In this study, ceramic microfiltration membranes with corrugated patterns were fabricated by 3D printing combined with the dip-coating process. To assess the impact of surface patterning on ceramic membrane performance, we initially compared the pore size and pure water flux between straight and corrugated membrane tubes. Both configurations exhibited similar parameters: a support pore size of approximately 1 μm, a membrane layer pore size of about 110 nm, and a pure water permeance of around 950 L m−2 h−1·bar−1. The corrugated ceramic membranes demonstrated superior anti-fouling properties compared to their straight counterparts during the filtration of nanoparticle suspensions, oil-in-water emulsions, and bacterial suspensions. Specifically, under a nanoparticle suspension concentration of 2000 ppm, a transmembrane pressure of 0.2 MPa, and a flow rate of 1.0 m s−1, the corrugated membrane achieved a stable flux of approximately 1.7 times greater than that of the straight membrane. Furthermore, we explored the effects of surface patterning on fluid dynamics through numerical simulations. The enhanced turbulence dissipation rate in the patterned membrane tubes suggests increased surface turbulence and an improved capacity to remove contaminants. This research offers novel insights into the development of ceramic membranes with enhanced anti-fouling capabilities for water treatment.

A Super-Antifouling Electrochemical Biosensor for Protein Detection in Complex Biofluids Based on PEGylated Multifunctional Peptide.

Overcoming the influence of interfering substances in the environment and achieving superior sensing performance are significant challenges in biomarker detection within complex matrices. Herein, an integrated electrochemical sensing platform for sensitive detection of biomarkers in complex biofluids was developed based on a newly designed PEGylated multifunctional peptide (PEG-MPEP). The designed PEG-MPEP contains a poly(serine) sequence (-ssssss-) as the antifouling part and recognition peptide sequence (-avwgrwh) specific for the target human immunoglobulin G (IgG). To improve the peptide stability to protease hydrolysis, d-amino acids were adopted to synthesize the whole peptide. Additionally, the PEGylation can further enhance the stability of the peptide, and the PEG itself was also antifouling, ensuring superstrong antifouling capability of the PEG-MPEP. The designed PEG-MPEP-based biosensor possessed a high sensitivity for the detection of IgG in the range of 1.0 pg mL-1 to 1.0 μg mL-1, with a low limit of detection (0.41 pg mL-1), and it was capable of assaying targets accurately in real serum samples. Compared with conventional peptide-modified biosensors, the PEG-MPEP-modified biosensor exhibited superior antifouling and antihydrolysis properties in complex biofluid, showcasing promising potential for practical assay applications.

In Vitro Performance of a Long-Range Surface Plasmon Hydrogel Aptasensor for Continuous and Real-Time Vancomycin Measurement in Human Serum.

This study investigated the suitability of surface modification for a long-range surface plasmon (LRSP) aptasensor using two different hydrogels, aiming at real-time monitoring of vancomycin (VCM) in undiluted serum and blood. Three different layer structures were formed on a gold surface of LRSP sensor chip using poly[2-methacryloyloxyethyl phosphorylcholine (MPC)-co-N-methacryloyl-(L)-tyrosinemethylester (MAT)] (PMM) and poly[MPC-co-2-ethylhexyl methacrylate (EHMA)-co-MAT] (PMEM). The peptide aptamer for VCM was immobilized in PMM and PMEM via MAT. Among four differently prepared sensor chips, the LRSP hydrogel aptasensor with PMM, referred to as the PMM hydrogel, exhibited the highest sensor output and superior antifouling properties. Following the optimization of the PMM hydrogel preparation conditions, the shelf life of the PMM hydrogel was determined to exceed 2 weeks, and the same sensor chip could be used for 102 days without significant performance deterioration. The PMM hydrogel was then applied for VCM measurement in undiluted serum in vitro, where it demonstrated a limit of detection of 0.098 μM and a dynamic range of 0.18-100 μM, covering the therapeutic range. Additionally, the PMM hydrogel enabled the continuous measurement of various VCM concentrations in serum without rinsing and showed a concentration-dependent output in undiluted blood. These findings underscore the potential of the PMM hydrogel for real-time and direct monitoring of VCM in body fluids.

Mesoporous Mg–Al–Ti composite oxide incorporated mixed matrix ultrafiltration membrane with superior multi-heavy metal removal capacity, anti-fouling & anti-microbial property

Mesoporous Mg–Al–Ti ternary composite oxide nano-adsorbents have demonstrated an exceptional performance to remove multiple heavy metals (As, Pb, Cd, Cr). Incorporation of these nanoparticles (NPs) in polysulfone membrane created a multifunctional mixed matrix membrane (MMM) with heavy metal adsorption capacity (both cationic and anionic species), enhanced hydrophilicity, anti-fouling property, and anti-microbial activity. The best heavy metal removal performance was shown by the membrane incorporated with 0.8 wt% NPs. Hydrophilicity improvement was studied through the decrease in water contact angle from 71° to 57° and surface probing using atomic force microscopy (AFM). With a maximum As(III) adsorption capacity of 256.6 mg/g, the membrane had a breakthrough volume of 25L and could provide safe drinking water for 19 h from a real Arsenic (As) contaminated groundwater sample with a flux of 48 l/m2-h. Beyond that, >90 % removal of Cd, Pb & Cr was also observed with maximum adsorption capacity of 652.9 mg/g, 332.5 mg/g, and 89.4 mg/g respectively. 92.5 % flux recovery after filtering a 1000 ppm bovine serum albumin showed the anti-fouling property. Successful inhibition of both gram-positive and gram-negative bacterial growth, and >99.99 % removal of colony forming units (CFU/ml) in the filtration process confirmed the anti-microbial resistance. With its multifunctionality, these membranes hold great potential for practical water treatment applications.

Efficient antibiotic remediation from wastewater using a lamellar free-standing 2D graphene oxide/Ti3C2Tx hybrid membrane

The existence of elevated levels of antibiotics in wastewater has facilitated the emergence and spread of pathogens with antimicrobial resistance (AMR). When combined with the worldwide water scarcity issue, this situation results in detrimental impacts on both the ecosystem and human well-being. Traditional methods employed by wastewater treatment facilities exhibit limited effectiveness in eliminating antibiotics. This paper describes the synthesis and performance of two-dimensional (2D) lamellar free-standing graphene oxide (GO)/Ti3C2Tx membrane for the removal of antibiotics from wastewater. The 50 %GO/Ti3C2Tx composite membrane demonstrated a remarkable increase in water flux, achieving 61.9 L m−2 h−1, surpassing the performance of the pristine GO membrane, which achieved 22.8 L m−2 h−1. Additionally, the GO/Ti3C2Tx composite membranes exhibited outstanding tetracycline rejection, consistently exceeding 99 %, a significant improvement compared to the pristine Ti3C2Tx membrane. The composite membranes of with a ratio of GO to MXene of 50 %, 40 %, 30 % and 20 % had contact angles of 54.5°, 57.4°, 60.6°, and 61.6°, respectively. Combining GO and Ti3C2Tx at specific mass ratios enhanced properties, evidenced by altered interlayer spacing and hydrophilicity. Furthermore, the superior composite membrane demonstrated superior antifouling properties compared to both pristine GO and Ti3C2Tx membranes.

A comprehensive review on the use of Ti3C2Tx MXene in membrane-based water treatment

Population growth, industrial activities, and the energy demands of water production intensify the global challenge of accessing clean water. Membrane-based water treatment processes have emerged as crucial solutions to address this crisis, these include microfiltration (MF), ultrafiltration (UF), nanofiltration (NF), forward osmosis (FO), reverse osmosis (RO), and membrane distillation (MD). This review summarizes the properties and use of Ti3C2Tx MXene, a material with notable chemical stability, specific surface area, hydrophilicity, thermal conductivity, and environmental compatibility. Ti3C2Tx fills in the class of two-dimensional materials, it is promising in various membrane processes by offering enhancement in hydrophilicity, permeability, and selectivity. In UF, Ti3C2Tx-based membranes have superior antifouling properties and high rejection rates of contaminants. Meanwhile, in NF, MXene nanosheets elevate the rejection of organics, dyes, and salts, and present valuable nanocomposite membranes. In desalination, incorporating Ti3C2Tx in RO membranes is found to increase water permeability while maintaining high salt rejection in desalination. Also, MXene-modified FO membranes had lower fouling and improved water flux compared with plain membranes, presenting a promising avenue for water purification. Additionally, Ti3C2Tx enhanced water vapor transport and resistance against wetting, which is favorable in MD.This review underscores the transformative potential of Ti3C2Tx MXene in revolutionizing membrane-based water treatment processes, providing innovative solutions to meet the escalating global demand for clean water. Future research directions should optimize MXene-based membrane designs and scale up their production for practical applications in water treatment, thereby contributing to a more sustainable water future.

In-situ interfacial polymerization of polyamide TFN membranes by adding a diamino-silane coupling agent: Toward enhanced desalination performance

The primary challenge faced by thin film nanocomposite (TFN) membrane in nanofiltration (NF) process is to effectively resolve the trade-off effect between permeability and selectivity. Herein, a polyamide (PA) TFN membrane with enhanced NF performance was prepared through in-situ interfacial polymerization (in-situ IP) method, using piperazine (PIP) and 3-diamino-methyl-cyclohexyl triethoxysilane (DTES) as co-amine monomers to undergo a reaction with 1,3,5-benzenetricarbonyl trichloride (TMC). This study investigated the effects of DTES on the surface chemical composition, morphologies, hydrophilicity, separation efficiency, and anti-fouling properties of the novel DTES/PIP/TMC TFN membranes. It was found that SiO2 nanoparticles were generated in-situ from the reacted DTES through hydrolysis and self-condensation, resulting in their uniform distribution within the formed PA selective layer with high compatibility and without aggregation. The optimal PA TFN membrane was achieved by adjusting the ration of Si-OH group in formed SiO2 nanoparticles through varying the concentration of DTES concentration. Meanwhile, the induction of SiO2 into the PA layer resulted in an enlargement in membrane pore size and improved surface hydrophilicity. When the concentration of added DTES was 0.333 wt%, the optimal PA TFN membrane (TFN-4) exhibited the highest quantity of formed Si-OH groups, resulting in the excellent performance, including a markedly enhanced water permeability flux of 76.8 L·m−2·h−1 (2-fold larger than that of the pure TFC membrane), a great Na2SO4 rejection of 97.5 %, and a superior Cl−/SO42− permeation selectivity of 46.0. Moreover, the TFN-4 membrane exhibited exceptional stability and superior antifouling properties attributed to its unparalleled hydrophilicity. This work provided a strategy for preparing uniform and high-performance TFN membranes.

Robust Electrochemical Biosensors Based on Antifouling Peptide Nanoparticles for Protein Quantification in Complex Biofluids.

Peptides with distinct physiochemical properties and biocompatibility hold significant promise across diverse domains including antifouling biosensors. However, the stability of natural antifouling peptides in physiological conditions poses significant challenges to their viability for sustained practical applications. Herein, a unique antifouling peptide FFFGGGEKEKEKEK was designed and self-assembled to form peptide nanoparticles (PNPs), which possessed enhanced stability against enzymatic hydrolysis in biological fluids. The PNP-coated interfaces exhibited superior stability and antifouling properties in preventing adsorption of nonspecific materials, such as proteins and cells in biological samples. Moreover, a highly sensitive and ultralow fouling electrochemical biosensor was developed through the immobilization of the PNPs and specific aptamers onto the polyaniline nanowire-modified electrode, achieving the biomarker carcinoembryonic antigen detection in complex biofluids with reliable accuracy. This research not only addresses the challenge of the poor proteolytic resistance observed in natural peptides but also introduces a universal strategy for constructing ultralow fouling sensing devices.
