Application of a harmonized life cycle assessment method for supplementary cementitious materials in structural concrete

Substitution of Ordinary Portland Cement (OPC) with supplementary cementitious materials (SCMs), such as fly ash and slag, can reduce energy consumption, thus a consequent depletion in carbon footprint. While there are some methods available for assessing sustainability, most studies considered only one or two aspects. Due to a lack of integration and uncertainty analysis, it is difficult for decision-makers to integrate possible mechanical, environmental, economic, and social measures for concrete selection. Therefore, this study performs regression analysis and Monte Carlo simulations on mechanical properties of concrete with different mix proportions of SCMs. The probabilistic distribution of uncertainty analysis shows concrete strength has a higher association with cement mix (r > 0.8) than slag (r = 0.77) and fly ash (r = 0.63) mixes. Harmonized method of life cycle impact assessment (LCIA) has been presented to categorize impacts from short-term to long-term perspectives in terms of human health damage (DALY), ecosystem damage (species.year), and resource availability ($) to take care of both environmental and social aspects. Single objective Pareto analysis determines cement's optimum replacement can happen with 20% fly ash and 30% slag. A total reduction of 2745 megatons CO2 and monetary savings of 209 billion dollars is feasible by replacing 50% of the produced cement globally (4.1 gigatons) with SCMs, which can be rewarded for human health and ecological recoveries.

A Life-Cycle Approach to Integrate Environmental and Mechanical Properties of Blended Cements Containing Seashell Powder

The adverse consequences of producing ordinary Portland cement (OPC) on the environment have introduced cement production as the fourth largest source of anthropogenic carbon emissions after petroleum, coal, and natural gas. Managing and reducing the environmental concerns regarding the impacts of cement production on the environment, namely the depletion of non-renewable fuel resources, consumption of natural raw materials, and releasing huge amounts of CO2 into the atmosphere should be, therefore, one of the key priorities of the cement industry. Application of locally available minerals and wastes that can be blended with OPC as a substitute could considerably reduce the environmental impact. The present study evaluates the potentiality of waste seashell to be used as an additive in the production of blended cement through a modified life cycle approach integrating environmental and mechanical performances. In this regard, 34 cements consisting of different blends of OPC, seashell powder (within the range of 4–30% by OPC mass), and natural pozzolan (up to 30% by OPC mass) were tested to identify the optimal dosage of OPC substitution. Environmental impacts of the cements were assessed through life-cycle analysis. The possibility of mitigating the carbon dioxide emissions in the production of cements, with similar mechanical performance compared to that of OPC, was evaluated by considering both the mechanical and environmental results. The outcome of this study introduced more environment-friendly and sustainable options for future cements.

Utilization of Industrial Byproducts for Enhancing the Properties of Cement Mortars at Elevated Temperatures

The research on industrial byproducts, such as slags and fly ash, was intense during the last decades in the building sector. Apart from the environmental benefits coming from their exploitation, their application may lead to the production of cost effective and durable building materials, such as mortars and concrete. The impact of industrial byproducts on the resistance of materials to fire and elevated temperatures was assessed by many scientists, however, it is still an open field of research. In this study, locally available byproducts were investigated, including High Calcium Fly Ash (HCFA), coming from lignite-fired power plants, as well as Ladle Furnace Steel (LFS) slag and Electric Arc Furnace (EAF) slag aggregates, originating from the steel making industry. Six mortar compositions were manufactured with substitution of Ordinary Portland Cement (OPC) with HCFA and LFS slag (20% w/w) and of natural aggregates with EAF slag (50% w/w). At the age of 7, 28, and 90 days, the physico-mechanical properties of the specimens were recorded, while they were further exposed at elevated temperatures, concerning 200 °C, 400 °C, 600 °C, 800 °C, and 1000 °C. After each exposure, their physico-mechanical and microstructure characteristics were identified. From the evaluation of the results, it was asserted that HCFA and EAF slag aggregates enhanced the overall performance of mortars, especially up to 600 °C. LFS was beneficial only in combination with EAF slag aggregates.

Design of High Volume CFBC Fly Ash Based Calcium Sulphoaluminate Type Binder in Mixtures with Ordinary Portland Cement.

Growing concerns on global industrial greenhouse gas emissions have boosted research for developing alternative, less CO2 intensive binders for partial to complete replacement of ordinary Portland cement (OPC) clinker. Unlike slag and pozzolanic siliceous low-Ca class F fly ashes, the Ca- and S-rich class C ashes, particularly these formed in circulating fluidised bed combustion (CFBC) boilers, are typically not considered as viable cementitious materials for blending with or substituting the OPC. We studied the physical, chemical-mineralogical characteristics of the mechanically activated Ca-rich CFBC fly ash pastes and mortars with high volume OPC substitution rates to find potential alternatives for OPC in building materials and composites. Our findings indicate that compressive strength of pastes and mortars made with partial to complete replacement of the mechanically activated CFBC ash to OPC is comparable to OPC concrete, showing compared to OPC pastes reduction in compressive strength only by <10% at 50% and <20% at 75% replacement rates. Our results show that mechanically activated Ca-rich CFBC fly ash can be successfully used as an alternative CSA-cement type binder.

Influence of Portland cement on performance of fine rice husk ash geopolymer concrete: Strength and permeability properties

Recently, industrial by-products such as rice husk ash has been identified as potential alternative binders to Ordinary Portland Cement (OPC) in concrete. Yet, it compromises the strength and concrete performance to some extent. One viable way is through partial replacement of such alternative binders with OPC, in order to achieve satisfactory concrete properties for practical applications. Thus far, no thorough study has been conducted to understand the properties of fine rice husk ash (FRHA) based geopolymer concrete (GPC) with different OPC content. This study focused on the influence of OPC as a substitution of FRHA on the strength and permeability of FRHA based GPC. The effects of OPC substitution on various properties, namely compressive strength, flexural strength, splitting tensile strength, modulus of elasticity, water absorption and chloride penetration resistance, were experimentally studied. Scanning electron microscopy (SEM), energy dispersive spectroscopy (EDS) and X-ray diffraction (XRD) techniques were also conducted to analyse the microstructural features. Experimentally, the optimum content of OPC in GPC was identified as 15%, since the highest compressive strength of 53.69 MPa was achieved at 90 days. Deterioration of the mechanical properties was observed with further increase in OPC replacement. Flexural strength, splitting tensile strength and modulus of elasticity also followed similar trends. In addition, water absorption (4.42%) and charge (1037 Coulombs) achieved by specimens with 15% OPC replacement were the lowest for all ages, suggesting improved durability performance. Microstructural studies also showed the enhanced and denser structure of GPC due to OPC substitution as a result of the formation of higher amount of calcium-silicate-hydrate (CSH) gel alongside calcium-aluminate-silicate-hydrate (CASH) andsodium-aluminate-silicate-hydrate (NASH) gels. These polymerisation gels strengthened the network by filling the voidsand enhancing the properties of GPC. Thus, it was concluded that the optimal combination of FRHA (85%) and OPC (15%) prominently enhanced the GPC properties by improving its overall performance.

Alkali-Activated Materials and Geopolymer: a Review of Common Precursors and Activators Addressing Circular Economy

IntroductionThe vast increase in CO2 and waste generation in recent decades has been a major obstacle to sustainable development and sustainability. In construction industry, the production of ordinary Portland cement is a major greenhouse gas emitter with almost 8% of total CO2 production in the world. To address this, Alkali-activated materials and geopolymer have more recently been introduced as a green and sustainable alternative of ordinary Portland cement with significantly lowered environmental footprints. Their use to replace Portland cement products generally leads to vast energy and virgin materials savings resulting in a sustainable concrete production. In doing so, it reuses the solid waste generated in industrial and manufacturing sectors, which is aligned with circular economy. In turn, it reduces the need for ordinary Portland cement consumption and its subsequent CO2 generation.ObjectiveTo provide further insight and address the challenges facing the substitution of ordinary Portland cement, this article reviews different types, mechanisms, and result of mechanical and durability properties of alkali-activated materials and geopolymer reported in literature. Finally, it discusses future projections of waste materials that have cementitious properties and can replace ordinary Portland cement and be used in alkali-activated materials and geopolymer.Graphical abstract

Investigation of the mechanical and durability properties of sustainable high performance concrete based on calcium sulfoaluminate cement

Calcium sulfoaluminate (CSA) cement could be a promising alternative to ordinary Portland cement (OPC) to reduce environmental impact of concrete production. This paper investigates the performance of high performance concretes produced with CSA cement in total or partial substitution of OPC (or OPC with ground granulated blast-furnace slag (GGBS)) at water-binder ratio of 0.35. Mechanical, physical, durability, and microstructural properties of different concretes were assessed. The results show that substitution of OPC with CSA cement improves the mechanical properties of concrete . The addition of CSA cement results in a reduced shrinkage deformation, while it increases the risk of carbonation and corrosion of steel rebars . Combination of CSA cement with OPC and GGBS in the binary and ternary systems causes a reduction of the strengths of concrete, and adversely affects the durability properties. The SEM observation show that ettringite crystals decomposed in the CSA-blended mixes and resulted in the formation of carbonated phases. • High performance concretes were developed with calcium sulfoaluminate (CSA) cement. • Ground granulated blast-furnace slag was utilized in ternary blended concrete mix. • Linear correlation between resistivity and compressive strength was obtained. • Electrical resistivity of CSA mixes can lead to misleading indication on corrosion. • The addition of CSA cement increases the risk of steel rebars corrosion.

Performance of Cement Mortars Containing Clay Exposed to High Temperature

The partial substitution of ordinary Portland Cement (OPC) with clay minerals as supplementary cementitious materials has been currently considered as an effective approach for reducing the harmful environmental impact and health risks of OPC. Although cement mortars are not easily ignitable, the exposure to elevated temperatures can alter their microstructure, leading to reduction in the strength and damage. Therefore, improving the temperature resistance of the cement mortars through the incorporation of local clay minerals has been proposed in this study. The mechanical performance and physical properties of cement mortars containing Wasia Formation clay (WFC) exposed to 700 °C have been investigated. OPC was partially replaced with WFC at various mass ratios of 0, 5, 10, 15, and 20 wt%. Several methods were used to assess the physico-mechanical and structural properties such as compressive strength testing, ultrasonic pulse velocity (UPV), Schmidt hamme, scanning electron microscopy, and X-ray powder diffraction (XRD). The addition of WFC as partial replacement of the cement showed a significant enhancement in the compressive strength for the mortars exposed to normal and elevated temperatures. The compressive strength of the mortar incorporating 20 wt% of WFC and exposed to 700 °C is about 2.5-fold greater than that of the ordinary mortar. Even after exposure to 700 °C, the UPV for the 20 wt% WFC-blended mortar is 30% greater than that for ordinary mortar, indicating the improved structural integrity of the blended mortars. The WFC-blended mortars showed dense and compact microstructure confirming the improvement in the strength of mortars.

Mechanical performance and corrosion resistance of reinforced concrete with marble waste

In this work, the performance of reinforced concrete containing different percentages of marble filler as a partial substitution of ordinary Portland cement is investigated. The cement is replaced by marble accordingly in the range of 5, 10, 15 and 20 wt.% for concrete. The measurements of flexural and compressive strengths are conducted on the concrete with marble dust. The corrosion behaviour of reinforced concrete in the aggressive medium (3% NaCl) is carried out using the potentiodynamic polarisation and impedance spectroscopy. From the outcome of this investigation, the partial substitution of cement by up to 20% of marble in concrete is achieved without compromising the overall strength. For all mixtures, the maximum compressive and flexural strengths at all curing ages are obtained with a 5% replacement of cement by marble. The greater effectiveness of marble waste is attributed to its higher calcium content and CO3 2– ions release, which lead to the formation of carboaluminate hydrates, then to further porosity reduction that increases the strengths. The results also show that the steel bars in reinforced concrete prepared with 5% of marble have better corrosion to that in the ordinary reinforced concrete.

Effect of marble slurry as a partial substitution of ordinary Portland cement in lean concrete mixes

AbstractMarble stone is the mostly quarried stone in Rajasthan for its high demand in India and abroad. This quarrying resulted in the generation of waste in a slurry form which was dumped in the nearby landfill sites resulted in a detrimental effect on the soil strata and expanding the landfill area with time. The focus of the study is to explore the outcome of utilization of marble slurry as a partial substitution of ordinary Portland cement by 10%, 20%, 30%, and 40% for lean concrete mixes with an average target compressive strength of 20 MPa or more. To explore the prospect of deployment of marble slurry in cement concrete mechanical properties, durability aspects, and relevant microstructural analysis was performed, and the results have been reported. Though the durability aspect was not purely encouraging, though it was depicted that marble slurry can be utilized as a partial replacement of OPC up to 40% for the purpose for which the investigation has been done.Highlights Marble slurry utilized as a substitution of OPC by 10%, 20%, 30%, 40%. TGA results indicate that marble slurry did not affect the hydration of OPC. Resistance against carbonation decreases with the increment of marble slurry content. UPV results indicates after 40% substitution concrete was in the good quality zone.

Effect of incorporating iron‐filing waste on the properties of silica fume blended cement paste

AbstractThis study is aimed at finding the contribution of the varied quantities (5, 10, and 15 wt%) of iron filing (IF) on the strength of silica fume (SF) blended ordinary Portland cement (OPC) paste. The paste was developed such that water/(IF + SF + OPC) ratio was maintained as 0.35 at a constant 10 wt% SF content in the binder. The early (7‐day) strength was found to be lower than the control (0% IF) due to disruption of hydration process. The decrease in strength of SF blended paste was increasing with the increase in the IF up to 15%. The maximum 28‐day compressive strength of 119 MPa was achieved when OPC blended binder was replaced with 5%IF. The maximum strength was reduced by 18.4 and 23.8% as the OPC substitution level increased to 10 and 15% IF, respectively. The presence of IF within the blended paste appeared not to combine chemically with hydration products. This caused nonuniformity in the microstructural texture thereby increasing the carbonation effect in the plain paste. However, the presence of SF in the paste reduced carbonation significantly as reflected in the reduction in the peak of —C—O— vibration as observed through FTIR spectroscopy.

Analysis of Metakaolin as Partial Substitution of Ordinary Portland Cement in Reactive Powder Concrete

Abstract Over the last 20 years, remarkable advances have taken place in the research on reactive powder concrete (RPC). However, because of the high contents of cement and silica fume (SF) usually used in those types of concrete, the cost and environmental impact of RPC is considerably higher than conventional concrete. Hence, the use of supplementary cementitious materials as partial substitution of cement and SF has been an object of great interest by the scientific community. However, the replacement of cement and SF can result in the deterioration of certain properties of RPC, such as the early strength; however, RPC usually needs great amounts of cement and SF. This work presents a study to analyze the effect of metakaolin (MK) as a partial substitute of cement in a previously optimized mixture of RPC using statistical tools such central composite design, main effect plot analysis, and response surface methodology. In addition to MK, supplementary cementitious materials such as SF, limestone powder and recycled glass powder, and fine Type III cement were used. Based on the laboratory experiments results and statistical analysis, it was concluded than MK develops a high activity in the hydration process of RPC, helping it reach high strength at early ages, such as 1 and 7 days, which may be of interest for applications such as the connection of prefabricated elements or accelerated bridge construction. However, the effect of the partial substitution of Type III cement by MK on 28-day compressive strength was nonsignificant. Moreover, the MK inclusion in RPC provides a significant decrease in workability as the amount of MK increases.

The mechanical properties and heat development behavior of high strength concrete containing high fineness coal bottom ash as a pozzolanic binder

There have been few studies reported on the influence of the use of coal bottom ash as a partial substitute for cement on the properties of high strength concrete. The work aims to assess the effect of the use of ground coal bottom ash (GBA) as a pozzolan substitute for ordinary Portland cement (OPC) on the properties of high strength concrete. The partial substitution of OPC with GBA at 15–45 wt% of binder was attempted to produce high strength concrete. The properties of concrete in terms of the slump loss, heat development, compressive strength, and modulus of elasticity (Ec) were evaluated. The results showed that the grinding of coal bottom ash improved its quality by achieving high fineness, and it could be used to produce high strength. Furthermore, such treatment also reduces the slump loss of fresh concrete containing the GBA. All concrete containing GBA exhibited compressive strengths of more than 55 MPa, except for the concrete with 45% of GBA at 7 days. The Ec values of GBA concrete increased along with the compressive strength and were similar in terms of magnitude to those of conventional concrete. Moreover, the use of GBA as a pozzolan could reduce the heat development. The heat development rate of GBA concrete was approximately 2 times lower than that of the conventional concrete made by using only OPC as a binder when using the GBA as a substitute for OPC when a rate of 45 wt% of binder was introduced into the concrete mixture. GBA can be used as a substitute material for cement to control the temperature of high strength concrete while maintaining a favorable mechanical strength. Such use also provides an avenue for the high value reuse of the waste material as a useful construction material.

End-of-Life Materials Used as Supplementary Cementitious Materials in the Concrete Industry.

A sustainable solution for the global construction industry can be partial substitution of Ordinary Portland Cement (OPC) by use of supplementary cementitious materials (SCMs) sourced from industrial end-of-life (EOL) products that contain calcareous, siliceous and aluminous materials. Candidate EOL materials include fly ash (FA), silica fume (SF), natural pozzolanic materials like sugarcane bagasse ash (SBA), palm oil fuel ash (POFA), rice husk ash (RHA), mine tailings, marble dust, construction and demolition debris (CDD). Studies have revealed these materials to be cementitious and/or pozzolanic in nature. Their use as SCMs would decrease the amount of cement used in the production of concrete, decreasing carbon emissions associated with cement production. In addition to cement substitution, EOL products as SCMs have also served as coarse and also fine aggregates in the production of eco-friendly concretes.

Experiments on drying shrinkage and creep of high performance hybrid-fiber-reinforced concrete

Drying shrinkage can cause high performance concrete (HPC) to crack, resulting in a reduction of its overall strength and durability. Creep behavior is also an important property of HPC and it should also be considered in applications. This paper evaluates the time-dependent creep and shrinkage properties of HPC as well as high performance hybrid-fiber-reinforced concretes (HPHyFRC) through experimental programs and the results will be compared with some common prediction models. The authors’ HPC were developed by using certain percentages of silica fume (SF) and ground granulated blast-furnace slag (GGBS) as cement replacement materials. Double hooked-end steel fibers, single hooked-end steel fibers, and polyvinyl alcohol fibers were mixed in different proportions in the concrete to get HPHyFRC. The total combined volume fractions of the fibers were 0%, 0.6%, and 1.2%. The results indicate that the substitution of ordinary Portland cement (OPC) with SF or GGBS improved the properties of concrete. The addition of fibers significantly reduced the drying shrinkage and creep coefficient of HPHyFRC. While the fiber volume fraction had an insignificant influence on the drying shrinkage of HPHyFRC, hybridization of polyvinyl alcohol fiber with steel fibers resulted in the minimum shrinkage strain. The least creep coefficient was attained by the concrete mix containing 1.2% double hooked-end steel fibers. The CEB-FIP 2010 model predicts the time-dependent behaviors of concretes with the best accuracy among different models compared in this study.

Utilization of crumb rubber and FBC-based ternary binder in shotcrete lining

This paper describes the early-age properties of shotcrete modified by i) up to 12.5% by volume crumb rubber as a replacement for aggregates and ii) substitution of ordinary Portland cement (OPC) by a fluidized bed combustion-based ternary binder (FBC-TB) up to 80% of mass. For the tests conducted, an increase in the crumb rubber volumetric fraction of the mixture always led to a decrease in uniaxial compressive strength. Replacing OPC with FBC-TB up to 20% enhanced the development of the early-age compressive strengths; however, a larger substitution resulted in the reduction in the concrete’s final compressive strength. In a full-size experimental mock-up test, the highest-performing mixture—in terms of acceptable mechanical properties and a reasonable amount of reused by-products—was subjected to full deployment in a concrete batching plant. Two batches (6 m3 in total) of concrete with crumb rubber and FBC-TB replacement were sprayed onto a full-scale model of a tunnel for the mock-up test. Evaluation of shotcrete performance included an analysis of the development of compressive strength and a comparison of results with criteria from the relevant code of practice, the New Austrian Tunnelling Method. Based on laboratory experiments, optimization, and in-situ measurements, the mock-up tests proved shotcrete containing crumb rubber and FBC-TC is applicable for full-scale use.

Comparative sustainability assessment of binary blended concretes using Supplementary Cementitious Materials (SCMs) and Ordinary Portland Cement (OPC)

The process of manufacturing the Ordinary Portland Cement (OPC) is linked with potentially adverse consequences on the environment, as it consumes considerable quantities of resources and releases huge amounts of CO2 to the atmosphere. It is becoming more common to replace some proportion of OPC with by-products from other industries that once were considered as waste and sent to the landfills. Known as Supplementary Cementitious Materials (SCMs), these by-products are already being used as cement replacement materials at a growing pace in the construction sector. This results in reducing the potential environmental loads and, in some cases, improving the mechanical and durability properties of concretes. The aim of this research was to investigate the environmental, economic and functional performances of binary blended concretes containing Fly Ash (FA), Ground Granulated Blast-Furnace slag (GGBFS) and Silica Fume (SF) at different OPC substitution percentages. Using the MARS-SC method, the concretes were compared and ranked by their sustainability performances, based on a list of fifteen sustainability indicators. The results showed that concrete containing 40% of GGBFS was ranked as the most sustainable among the studied mixtures, as it presented the most suitable trade-offs to achieve the highest sustainability performance. Concrete with 15% of SF was ranked as the less sustainable, with a sustainability level lower than the conventional concrete. From a sustainability perspective, the optimum replacement ratio was found to be: 40% for GGBFS, 5% for SF, and 20% for FA, which means that exceeding that substitution ratio will probably lead to a binary blended concrete with a lower sustainability level.

Review of Carbonation Resistance in Hydrated Cement Based Materials

Blended cements are preferred to Ordinary Portland Cement (OPC) in construction industry due to costs and technological and environmental benefits associated with them. Prevalence of significant quantities of carbon dioxide (CO2) in the atmosphere due to increased industrial emission is deleterious to hydrated cement materials due to carbonation. Recent research has shown that blended cements are more susceptible to degradation due to carbonation than OPC. The ingress of CO2 within the porous mortar matrix is a diffusion controlled process. Subsequent chemical reaction between CO2 and cement hydration products (mostly calcium hydroxide [CH] and calcium silicate hydrate [CSH]) results in degradation of cement based materials. CH offers the buffering capacity against carbonation in hydrated cements. Partial substitution of OPC with pozzolanic materials however decreases the amount of CH in hydrated blended cements. Therefore, low amounts of CH in hydrated blended cements make them more susceptible to degradation as a result of carbonation compared to OPC. The magnitude of carbonation affects the service life of cement based structures significantly. It is therefore apparent that sufficient attention is given to carbonation process in order to ensure resilient cementitious structures. In this paper, an indepth review of the recent advances on carbonation process, factors affecting carbonation resistance, and the effects of carbonation on hardened cement materials have been discussed. In conclusion, carbonation process is influenced by internal and external factors, and it has also been found to have both beneficial and deleterious effects on hardened cement matrix.

Utilization of rice husk ash and waste glass in the production of ternary blended cement mortar composites

The purpose of this study is the recycling or reuse of waste materials in the production of ternary blended cement mortars (TBCMs) by a partial substitution of ordinary Portland cement (OPC) with a ratio of 20% waste glass powder (WG) to obtain a blended cement (80% OPC: 20% WG). Three different ratios of rice husk ash namely 2.5%, 5%, and 10% are added to obtain three TBCMs as well as conventional cement mortar CM (zero % of rice husk ash). The specimens of all mortars are cured under tap water for different periods of time namely 3, 7, 28, 60, and 90 days. The influence of amorphous silica present in both waste glass and rice husk ash on the performance of TBCMs is studied. The results emphasized that both the waste glass and rice husk ash has a positive effect in the improvement of the compressive strength values of all mortar specimens with increasing hydration time. While the physical parameters such as total porosity and water absorption percentages decreased. The results also indicated that for any given hydration time, the compressive strength values of TBCMs are higher than those of CM. The noticeable improvement in the compressive strength is for TBCM2 specimens (5% rice husk ash). On the other hand, the influence of gamma-irradiation doses on physico-mechanical properties of unsaturated polyester (UP)/impregnated blended cement mortar composite specimens (TBCMs) is studied. The obtained data showed an enhancement in the mechanical properties of the irradiated specimens as compared to unirradiated ones. Furthermore, the thermal stability of TBCMs is studied by using thermo gravimetric analysis (TGA). The results are also confirmed by XRD analysis.

Workability, Setting Time and Strength of High-Strength Concrete Containing High Volume of Palm Oil Fuel Ash

Introduction: Palm oil fuel ash in two various forms-ground (GPOFA) by heat-treated carbon-free ultrafine of a median particle size of 2 μm (UPOFA) were utilized to produce high strength concretes (HSC-GPOFA (HSCgx), HSC-UPOFA (HSCux), and HSC-OPC) at different levels ordinary Portland cement (OPC) partial replacements (x) of 20, 40 and 60%. Methods: The workability (slump, slump loss, and compacting factor), initial and final setting times and strength in both forms of concrete were investigated. Results and Conclusion: The results showed that HSCu had improved physical properties and chemical compositions, extended setting times, enhanced workability, better strength, and enhanced workability retention compared to HSCg and HSC-OPC. Further, POFA carbon content negatively influenced the workability and setting time, while its specific gravity had a positive influence due to the enhancement of paste volume and particles lubrication effects. However, carbon content and surface areas of POFA did not significantly influence the compressive strength of HSC at the level of partial OPC substitution not exceeding 40%.
