The Effectiveness of Memory Strategies to Improve Students' Speaking Skills

This research studies the memory strategies used by the second semester STAI Ma’arif Magetan students to improve their speaking skills through involvement in English vocabulary. The purpose of this research is to find out the types of strategies and students' preferences in using strategic memory to improve their speaking skills. The data consists of memory strategies used by STAI Ma’arif Magetan students. The data source consisted of 30 second semester students. The memory strategy questionnaire was carried out for the data collection process. Data analysis was carried out using several steps such as data reduction, displaying data, and drawing conclusions. The research results showed: (1) students used ten indicators of strategic memory (grouping, associating, placing new words into a context, using images, semantic solvers, using keywords, representing sounds in memory, structural displays, using physical responses or sensation, and using mechanical techniques); (2) students' preferences in using memory strategies to place new words into context.

Optimization of node deployment in underwater internet of things using novel adaptive long short‐term memory‐based egret swarm optimization algorithm

SummaryOptimizing node deployment in the underwater Internet of Things (UIoT) poses significant challenges due to the complex and dynamic nature of underwater environments. This research introduces the adaptive long short‐term memory‐based egret swarm optimization algorithm (ALSTM‐ESOA), a novel approach designed to enhance network coverage and performance efficiently. Unlike traditional methods, ALSTM‐ESOA incorporates cognitive learning capabilities from long short‐term memory (LSTM) and dynamic adaptation strategies inspired by the hunting behaviors of egrets. The algorithm's effectiveness was tested through extensive simulations in MATLAB, demonstrating notable improvements over existing models: network throughput increased by up to 55.56%, deployment time decreased by 88.89%, and energy efficiency improved significantly. These enhancements are critical for robust, real‐time data collection and monitoring in underwater settings, providing substantial benefits for marine research and resource management. The findings suggest that ALSTM‐ESOA significantly outperforms conventional algorithms, offering a promising new tool for the advancement of UIoT applications. After being implemented in MATLAB, the suggested ALSTM‐ESOA model for the node deployment optimization in UIoT is examined. The proposed ALSTM‐ESOA in terms of network throughput is 55.56%, 38.89%, 36.11%, and 11.11% better than CNN, LSTM, ARO‐RTP, and IGOR‐TSA, respectively. Similarly, the proposed ALSTM‐ESOA with respect to deployment time is 88.89%, 81.82%, 75%, and 50% better than CNN, LSTM, ARO‐RTP, and IGOR‐TSA, respectively. For the purpose of exploring marine resources, monitoring underwater environments, and conducting marine scientific investigation, the research's findings are extremely valuable.

Everyday forgetfulness and memory complaints: A randomized controlled cognitive intervention study

ABSTRACT The results of Cognitive Intervention (CI) programs vary considerably; thus, it is helpful to assess the characteristics that enhance the effectiveness of these programs. Our objectives were to analyze the effectiveness of a multicomponent CI program called UMAM on cognitive performance, subjective memory, daily forgetfulness, and mood of individuals with memory complaints. Older adults with no cognitive impairment were separated into two groups by simple random assignment, a control (n = 111) and a parallel experimental (n = 115) group. They were assessed with an extended neuropsychological protocol and the Memory Failures of Everyday Questionnaire (MFE); evaluation pre and post intervention (at six months). We performed a multifactorial cognitive intervention (30 sessions) based on memory strategies, stimulation of cognitive processes, instruction in basic concepts about memory, interventions for everyday memory failures, and Metamemory. The Results showed improvements in objective measures, including logical memory (Cohen’s d = .30); processing speed (d = .26); phonological (d = .33) and semantic verbal fluency (d = .27); and general cognitive performance (d = .82) (all, p < .05). In subjective measures, we found improvements in mood state (d = .25) and everyday memory failures (MFE: d = .29) (all, p < .05). Several everyday failures improve: ‘Forgetting where you have put something,’ “finding a word that is on the ‘tip of the tongue,’ and ‘checking again if something has been done’ (all, p < .05). We found positive results when a cognitive process was directly trained intensely using exercises that focus on real life, with adaptive activities that aim to resolve everyday memory failures. This program has proved effective in promoting health and well-being and preventing cognitive impairment. Trial registration: Trial retrospectively registered on January 29, 2020; (ClinicalTrials.gov -NCT04245579).

Exploration and optimization of novel replacement and prefetching strategies for inefficiencies of advanced MRAM-based hybrid cache systems

With the emergence of cutting-edge hardware systems such as cloud computing, edge computing, and on-chip neural network accelerators, how to design advanced memory strategies to substitute the traditional ones for maximizing the potential performance of non-volatile memory (NVM) under the existing hardware conditions, has become an urgent research issue for both academia and industrial communities. It is promising and innovative to improve computer systems in the layer of data exchanging with the emerging advanced semiconductor devices. In the paper, to address the inefficiencies of write-intensive, high power consumption, low hit rate and so on, which exist in hybrid magnetic random access memory cache systems, three novel cache replacement strategies and two cache prefetching strategies are put forward. The proposed triple novel replacement strategies, including historical frequency and time judgments, duplicate data-aware deletion, and dynamic relevance factors computing, can be utilized to compensate for the shortcomings of the traditional least recently used replacement strategy, respectively. In the two novel prefetching strategies, region distribution parameters and Listnet ranking network are imported into the caching process, respectively, to achieve optimized hitting performance. The simulation results demonstrate that the proposed replacement strategies can achieve up to 61.76%, 84.91%, 56.49%, and 53.21% optimization of write count, hit rate, dynamic power, and IPC compared to the conventional one. The proposed prefetching strategy can achieve up to 91.27%, 49.25% hit rate and IPC optimization. Meanwhile, the synthetic evaluation of the replacement and prefetching strategies are elaborated in the paper, including multi-core characteristics, information entropy, interplays and the performance constraints between replacement and prefetching mechanism, which would facilitate more credible ideas for future memory inefficiencies management and strategy design.

Individual differences in spatial working memory strategies differentially reflected in the engagement of control and default brain networks.

Spatial locations can be encoded and maintained in working memory using different representations and strategies. Fine-grained representations provide detailed stimulus information, but are cognitively demanding and prone to inexactness. The uncertainty in fine-grained representations can be compensated by the use of coarse, but robust categorical representations. In this study, we employed an individual differences approach to identify brain activity correlates of the use of fine-grained and categorical representations in spatial working memory. We combined data from six functional magnetic resonance imaging studies, resulting in a sample of $155$ ($77$ women, $25 \pm 5$ years) healthy participants performing a spatial working memory task. Our results showed that individual differences in the use of spatial representations in working memory were associated with distinct patterns of brain activity. Higher precision of fine-grained representations was related to greater engagement of attentional and control brain systems throughout the task trial, and the stronger deactivation of the default network at the time of stimulus encoding. In contrast, the use of categorical representations was associated with lower default network activity during encoding and higher frontoparietal network activation during maintenance. These results may indicate a greater need for attentional resources and protection against interference for fine-grained compared with categorical representations.

Radiation-Induced Cognitive Decline: Challenges and Solutions.

Radiation therapy, a common treatment for central nervous system cancers, can negatively impact cognitive function, resulting in radiation-induced cognitive decline (RICD). RICD involves a decline in cognitive abilities such as memory and attention, likely due to damage to brain white matter, inflammation, and oxidative stress. The multifactorial nature of RICD poses challenges including different mechanisms of injury (neurogenesis, oxidative stress and neuroinflammation, dendritic structure alterations and vascular effects) and confounding factors like advanced age, and pre-existing conditions. Despite these challenges, several potential solutions exist. Neuroprotective agents like antioxidants can mitigate radiation damage, while cognitive rehabilitation techniques such as cognitive training and memory strategies improve cognitive function. Advanced imaging techniques like magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) help identify vulnerable brain areas, and proton therapy offers precise targeting of cancer cells, sparing healthy tissue. Multidisciplinary care teams are crucial for managing RICD's cognitive and psychological effects. Personalized medicine, using genetic and molecular data, can identify high-risk patients and tailor treatments accordingly. Emerging therapies, including stem cell therapy and regenerative medicine, offer hope for repairing or replacing damaged brain tissue. Addressing RICD is vital for cancer survivors, necessitating consideration of cognitive function and provision of appropriate support and resources for those experiencing cognitive decline.

Openness to experience, a personality trait that reduces susceptibility to memory age-based stereotype threat.

Age-based stereotype threat (ABST), the concern of being judged according to a negative age stereotype may lead to underperformance in the stereotype domain. The present study aims to replicate the negative effect of ABST on episodic memory. Importantly, we further examine openness to experience as a potential buffer of the ABST effect as well as the role that different memory strategies may play in episodic memory performance. Seventy-five older adults were randomly assigned to the ABST condition or the control condition before taking a word-stem cued recall memory task. They learned word-lists with either a repetition strategy, low resource demanding but less efficient, or a mental imagery strategy, high resource demanding but more efficient. Openness was measured with the Big-5 personality questionnaire. ABST reduced memory performance and disrupted more the recall of words learned with the imagery strategy. The results also showed that openness predicted recall performance associated with the imagery strategy only in the threatened group. These results indicated that a high level in openness may disrupt the negative effect of ABST by improving the capacity of threatened people to execute efficient, resource demanding memory strategies. This finding supports the idea that contextual factors as well as individual characteristics such as personality, need to be considered when assessing episodic memory in aging.

Memory strategies in autistic and older adults.

Memory strategies in autistic adults seem to mimic strategies at older age, as both younger autistic and older non-autistic individuals use fewer semantic features in visual memory tasks. Therefore, the current study aims to investigate whether early differences in memory strategies lead to altered age-related effects in autism, particularly whether initial difficulties in strategy use become advantageous at older age (i.e., "protective aging"). A total of 147 participants across four groups (autistic younger/older, non-autistic younger/older) completed an online assessment. This assessment included a recognition version of the Visual Patterns Test (VPT) to evaluate semantic strategy use in visual memory, the Just Noticeable Difference (JND) size task for assessing visual processing, and the Multifactorial Memory Questionnaire to evaluate subjective memory functioning and strategy use (MMQ). Unexpectedly, all groups benefited from semantic features on the VPT, although the older groups performed less accurately and slower than the younger groups. The JND Size task showed no group differences. Autistic adults rated their MMQ memory as worse than non-autistic adults, despite reporting greater strategy use. These results indicate that cognitive strategies might be more similar between younger/older and autistic/non-autistic people than previously expected, although notable discrepancies between objective and subjective measures were present. They also substantiate previously reported parallel (i.e., similar) age-related effects between autistic and non-autistic people.

Predictors of long-term memory and network connectivity 10 years after anterior temporal lobe resection.

Anterior temporal lobe resection (ATLR) effectively controls seizures in medically refractory temporal lobe epilepsy but risks significant episodic memory decline. Beyond 1 year postoperatively, the influence of preoperative clinical factors on episodic memory and long-term network plasticity remain underexplored. Ten years post-ATLR, we aimed to determine biomarkers of successful memory network reorganization and establish presurgical features' lasting impact on memory function. Twenty-five ATLR patients (12 left-sided) and 10 healthy controls underwent a memory-encoding functional magnetic resonance imaging paradigm alongside neuropsychometry 10 years postsurgery. Generalized psychophysiological interaction analyses modeled network functional connectivity of words/faces remembered, seeding from the medial temporal lobes (MTLs). Differences in successful memory connectivity were assessed between controls and left/right ATLR. Multivariate regressions and mixed-effect models probed preoperative phenotypes' effects on long-term memory outcomes. Ten years post-ATLR, lower baseline functioning (verbal and performance intelligence quotient) and a focal memory impairment preoperatively predicted worse long-term memory outcomes. Poorer verbal memory was significantly associated with longer epilepsy duration and earlier onset age. Relative to controls, successful word and face encoding involved increased functional connectivity from both or remnant MTL seeds and contralesional parahippocampus/hippocampus after left/right ATLR. Irrespective of surgical laterality, successful memory encoding correlated with increased MTL-seeded connectivity to frontal (bilateral insula, right anterior cingulate), right parahippocampal, and bilateral fusiform gyri. Ten years postsurgery, better memory performance was correlated with contralateral frontal plasticity, which was disrupted with longer epilepsy duration. Our findings underscore the enduring nature of functional network reorganizations to provide long-term cognitive support. Ten years post-ATLR, successful memory formation featured stronger connections near resected areas and contralateral regions. Preoperative network disruption possibly influenced effectiveness of postoperative plasticity. These findings are crucial for enhancing long-term memory prediction and strategies for lasting memory rehabilitation.

Exploring the Efficacy of a Remote Strategy-Based Intervention for People With Multiple Sclerosis With Everyday Memory Impairments: A Pilot Study.

This pilot study evaluates a remote strategy-based intervention for individuals with multiple sclerosis who experience everyday memory impairments. The intervention can potentially inform cognitive rehabilitation for this population. To investigate the feasibility and efficacy of an intervention (TELE-Self-GEN) to determine whether it can alleviate everyday memory impairments of individuals with multiple sclerosis. Pretest-posttest. Community. Ten adults with multiple sclerosis. Six synchronous treatment sessions were delivered online via Zoom. The treatment protocol embedded a memory strategy (self-generated learning) within a metacognitive framework, including self-awareness and self-management strategies. The treatment emphasizes when and how self-generation should be used. Measurements assessed feasibility and participants' satisfaction with the intervention and its delivery method, as well as memory, everyday memory, and functional performance. Participants expressed high satisfaction with the virtual treatment, highlighting its convenience as a key factor. Treatment resulted in improvements in memory performance, perceived memory ability in daily life, and functional performance. Results provide initial proof of concept in the utilization of a remotely delivered, strategy-based treatment approach to improve memory performance and functional abilities. The pilot data support a larger randomized clinical trial of the TELE-self-GEN. Plain-Language Summary: The results of this pilot study highlight the promising potential of TELE-self-GEN for people with multiple sclerosis (MS), who face memory challenges every day. This remotely delivered, strategy-based occupational therapy treatment approach, TELE-self-GEN, has the potential to significantly improve functional memory. The study participants reported improvements in their memory performance, perceived memory ability in daily life, and functional performance. These encouraging results serve as a foundation for more extensive clinical trials using TELE-self-GEN for people with MS.

Vocabulary Learning and Memory Strategies Usage among English for Medical Purposes (EMP) Students

In the backdrop of globalization, proficient command of English as an international language is essential in different research fields. English for Medical Purposes (EMP) is an essential prerequisite for international communication and exchanges, however, vocabulary has been found to be an obstacle in EMP learning, which affects learners’ academic achievement in their professional field. This article investigated students’ beliefs on EMP vocabulary learning, preferences for memory strategies, and perceptions on memory strategies usage. It aimed to find out the difficulty in EMP vocabulary learning, viable memory strategies and the effect and influence of using these strategies. A qualitative research method of in-depth interview was used to deeply explore students’ real subjective thinking on EMP vocabulary learning and memory strategies usage. Students from Ningxia Medical University, China, who would like to improve their EMP lexical proficiency were conveniently selected as the participants. The qualitative analysis software NVivo 12 was used to analyze the collected data. The results mainly indicate that most students believe EMP lexis is challenging to learn because of its complicated characteristics, while high language proficiency learners are found to utilize more memory strategies. Students primarily concentrate on simple operations of strategies use and agree on the benefits of enhancing memorization, while having own categorization of learning EMP lexical items. The conclusions obtained from the research results could provide references for both EMP vocabulary teaching and learning, and some recommendations are proposed to improve EMP vocabulary learning quality.

A Non-English Students' Strategies in Learning Technical Vocabularies

This research aimed to finding out the strategies that usually used in learning technical vocabularies by Non-English students’. This research applied the Descriptive Qualitative Method, which took 2 months period of it for the data collection by using interview. The research involved ten students’ from Faculty Economic and Business Universitas Muhammadiyah Makassar as the participants. The scope of the study is tend to analyze the strategies used by Non-English students’ in learning a foreign language, in this case English. A result of this research showed that the strategies that usually used in learning technical vocabularies by Non-English students’ most of the students’ used direct strategies, namely memory strategies, cognitive strategies and compensation strategies. And the students’ also used indirect strategies, namely metacognitive strategies, affective strategies and social strategies. Based on the data obtained, the researcher concluded that the students’ used both strategies in learning technical vocabularies.

The Effectiveness of Traditional and Modern Memorization Techniques for Quranic Learning in Indonesia

The process of memorizing the Quran, a revered practice in the Muslim world, employs a variety of methods ranging from traditional oral repetition to contemporary technological aids. The research primarily seeks to identify which techniques yield the highest retention rates and the most profound understanding among students. This study employs a literature review methodology, analyzing a wide array of existing research, articles, and case studies that focus on Quranic memorization techniques. Sources include academic journals, educational reports, and empirical studies conducted in Indonesian madrasas and Quranic schools. By synthesizing findings from these sources, the study offers a comprehensive overview of the strengths and limitations of both traditional and modern memorization strategies. The results of this research indicate that while traditional methods such as rote learning and oral recitation continue to be highly effective in fostering deep memorization, modern techniques incorporating digital tools and interactive learning platforms significantly enhance engagement and accessibility for students. The integration of both methods appears to offer the most balanced and effective approach, combining the thoroughness of traditional practices with the innovation of modern technology

COGNITIVE PROCESSING AND MEMORY TECHNIQUES IN CONSECUTIVE INTERPRETATION

This study investigates the psychophysiological characteristics and memory utilization in professional translators specializing in consecutive interpretation. Utilizing a comprehensive questionnaire, the study gathered data from practicing translators to understand how mechanical, logical, and imaginative memory strategies impact their translation performance, particularly focusing on spoken information retention over extended periods. Results indicate a strong preference for logical memorization due to its effectiveness in structuring and understanding complex information. However, imaginative memorization also plays a crucial role in scenarios requiring dynamic translation solutions. These findings suggest that training programs should emphasize versatile memory strategies to enhance translation accuracy and efficiency.

SCRUTINIZING PAPUAN EFL STUDENTS’ STRATEGIES FOR ENRICHING ENGLISH VOCABULARY MASTERY

The current study aimed to scrutinize the approaches employed by Papuan EFL students to improve their vocabulary skills. The study utilized a mixed methods approach, incorporating both a questionnaire and interviews to gather data from 30 Papuan EFL students enrolled in a private university in Timika, Papua. The results revealed that the majority of participants employed four key strategies for vocabulary acquisition: social, memory, cognitive, and metacognitive. Notably, the memory strategy was most commonly utilized, with participants frequently associating new words with personal experiences to aid in retention. This study provided beneficial recommendations and suggestions for educators. In this sense, the findings of this study can be utilized as useful strategies to teach EFL students based on their interests. Thus, those strategies can facilitate them to achieve vocabulary mastery.

Memory strategies focused on english vocabulary learning: A case study in a public high school in Loja City

The research " Memory Strategies Focused on English Vocabulary Learning: A Case Study in a Public High School in Loja City" aimed to determine the effectiveness of memory strategies focused on English vocabulary learning among students of a public high school in Loja City. This study examined how various memory strategies promote vocabulary acquisition and retention, as well as opportunities for students’ practice in real contexts. It also investigated the adaptability of memory strategies to individual student needs and their efficacy for learners with diverse language proficiency levels or specific learning requirements. This study involved implementing four memory strategies, such as creating mental linkages, applying images and sound, reviewing well, and employing action, within the classroom setting over 12 weeks. Data collection methods included pre and post-assessments, student surveys, and classroom observations. Preliminary findings suggest that the use of specific memory strategies positively influences vocabulary retention and fosters a deeper understanding of language concepts. Finally, this research showed that memory strategies motivated vocabulary learning improvement and provided insights into improving language learning experiences for high school students.

The effectiveness of cognitive training in people in psychiatry with depressive symptoms – A randomized controlled study

Ninety percent of people with depression also report suffering from additional cognitive disorders. However, despite the high prevalence, the effectiveness of cognitive training methods for mental illnesses has not yet been extensively researched.In our study, ninety-six adult patients with depressive symptoms were randomly assigned to one of two intervention groups or a passive control group. Ultimately, 48 patients successfully completed the training and assessments. The first intervention group completed computer-based cognitive training (three times a week for 20 min). The second intervention group practiced different memory strategies three times a week, in addition to completing the same computer-based cognitive training as the first intervention group.All groups demonstrated several improvements in cognitive performance and experienced benefits in everyday life over time. However, we found neither a significant group effect nor a significant time × group interaction effect for any of the measures. Despite this, on a descriptive level, the intervention groups showed improvements across all five cognitive test performance outcomes (especially attention and working memory) and displayed better scores in the post intervention assessment of the self-reported personal variables (well-being, emotional regulation and depressive symptoms). Approximately 50 % of the subjects in each group did not complete the training or the post intervention assessment and were excluded. We worked closely with healthcare professionals, therapists and doctors and were thus able to gather not only research results but also valuable experience in dealing with patients with depressive symptoms who are undergoing cognitive training. Our findings and experiences may have implications for optimizing the reintegration of people with depressive symptoms.

The Use of Oxford’s Memory Strategies to Improve Vocabulary Learning Among Eleventh Grade EFL Students in Oman

Omani students must acquire English vocabulary to achieve educational qualifications and effectively communicate with English-speaking individuals, as vocabulary plays a crucial part in studying a foreign language and achieving academic success. Omani eleventh-grade students require assistance in employing effective ways for acquiring and retaining English vocabulary. They struggle with word retrieval in both spoken and written language. This study investigates the memory strategies utilised, preferred strategies, and influencing factors among eleventh grade EFL students in Oman. This study utilises an explanatory sequential mixed methods methodology. Convenience sampling was used to involve 126 students in this study. The researcher gathered data through a questionnaire, a semi-structured interview, and an observation checklist. The questionnaire data is analysed by descriptive statistical analysis, which includes calculating the mean and standard deviation. Thematic analysis is utilised for analysing the semi-structured interview data, while observation analysis is carried out to assess the classroom observation checklist. The findings showed that the most utilised category of methods is reviewing well (x=3.99), followed by employing actions (x=3.07). Interviews reveal that students favour utilising movies, visual aids, gaming, or competitive activities while interacting with their peers and friends. Additionally, CML tactics are predominantly utilised by teachers in their classrooms. The study results would assist educators in developing their vocabulary teaching strategies more efficiently, resulting in increased advantages for students. The curriculum developers could create tasks that enhance language acquisition.

On Chinese learning strategies of learners from Central Asian countries: an analysis of gender, age, and learning duration effects.

This research focuses on the Chinese learning strategies employed by learners from Central Asian countries, specifically examining the effects of gender, age, and learning duration. The study aims to identify and analyze the demographic factors that influence the learning approaches of these learners, providing insights for more effective teaching and learning of Chinese as a foreign language. Data are collected through questionnaires and interviews, and statistical analysis is conducted to explore the correlations between gender, age, learning duration, and learning strategies. The learning strategy model adopted in this study provides a comprehensive classification of language learning strategies. The results underscore the significance of incorporating these factors into language education programs, providing valuable insights into the unique needs and challenges encountered by learners from Central Asian countries. The findings indicate that students from Central Asian countries predominantly utilize social strategies, metacognitive strategies, and affective strategies in their Chinese language learning. These are followed by compensatory strategies, cognitive strategies, and memory strategies. While gender does not exert a significant impact on the utilization of Chinese learning strategies, there are discernible variations in memory and affective strategies between males and females. Age does not significantly affect overall learning strategies, but there are notable disparities in compensatory strategies among different age groups. Learning duration has a significant effect on compensation and metacognitive strategies. The correlation between learning duration and overall strategies is significant indicating that learners with different learning durations exhibit notable differences in compensation and metacognitive strategies.
