The Applicability of Design Thinking in the Tourism Sector, Kwazulu-Natal, South Africa

One of the most significant corporate trends nowadays is design thinking, which gives firms the ability to develop their strategic thinking capabilities in order to tackle difficult problems. The goals of design thinking are to transform enterprises, encourage imaginative abilities, pinpoint needs and opportunities, and provide fresh ideas and scenarios for the company. South Africa's economy can grow as much as is desired by including all of these aspects. Design thinking is a capability that may deliberately assist the South African tourism industry in attaining its aspirational goals of increasing visitor arrivals, accelerating job development, and unleashing entrepreneurial prospects across sub-sectors that are closely related to the tourism sector. Tourism industry stakeholders must be aware of the evolving consumer demands. Understanding whether design thinking might be applied to the tourism sector in KwaZulu-Natal, South Africa, and whether doing so may be effective and advantageous for this sector, was the study's primary objective. Purposive sampling was used in this study's qualitative research approach. Eleven members of the tourism industry participated in a design thinking workshop, a focus group, and interviews in August and September 2021. The main conclusions showed that design thinking would be an effective technique to support improvements and innovation in the tourism sector, as all participants confirmed and agreed. The study's findings have led to various factors that can help design thinking improve tourism industry business. It is recommended that though design thinking can boost business in the tourism industry, a number of contributing factors must be properly implemented.

Exploration Of Subjective Norms Of Tourists In The Application Of Planned Behavior Theory To Predict The Intention To Visit Tourist Objects In Indonesia

This research aims to explore a deeper understanding of the factors that influence tourists' intentions to visit tourist attractions in Indonesia using the Planned Behavior Theory (TPB) approach. This research focuses on exploring tourists' subjective norms, which is one of the main components in the TPB, along with attitudes and behavioural control. The research method involves an online survey targeting a sample of tourists who have visited or intend to visit tourist attractions in Indonesia. The research instrument consists of structured questions designed to measure critical variables in the TPB, with particular emphasis on subjective norms. Data analysis used descriptive and inferential statistical techniques to identify relationships between key variables. The research findings are expected to significantly contribute to understanding the factors that influence tourists' visiting intentions, as well as their implications for developing marketing strategies and managing tourist attractions in Indonesia. It is hoped that the results of this research can become a reference for tourism industry stakeholders, government and researchers in consumer behaviour and tourism to improve the management and development of tourist attractions in Indonesia to increase the attractiveness and competitiveness of tourist destinations globally.

Community capacity building and indigenous tourism in Iran

ABSTRACT Enhancing community capacity is crucial for sustaining tourism benefits in marginalized areas, yet remains underexplored. This study focuses on community capacity building in a nomadic community in Iran, utilizing qualitative methods. Twenty participants, including locals and tourism stakeholders, were interviewed. Thematic analysis revealed key factors like governance, social capital, and community cohesion impacting capacity building. Challenges such as distance from power centers and cultural biases hindered progress. The research highlights the significance of factors like local leadership and access to resources in bolstering community capacity for sustainable tourism development. Addressing obstacles like religious biases and nomadic lifestyles is crucial for effective capacity building in marginalized communities. The study offers significant practical and theoretical implications for tourism industry stakeholders.

Fear of Crime and Terrorism Among Backpackers: Is There a Relationship Between Country of Origin and Trip Location?

This study aimed to compare fear of terrorism and fear of crime among backpackers and investigate the differences between Israeli and Western backpackers. A cross-sectional questionnaire was administered to 120 Israeli backpackers and 109 backpackers from Western countries. Findings showed no significant differences in fear of crime between the groups, with 40% reporting exposure to crime in their home country. Israeli backpackers had higher exposure to terrorism events. While most backpackers did not experience harm during their trip, they reported higher levels of fear of crime while traveling. Israeli backpackers expressed greater fear of terrorism in their home country, while the Western group reported higher fear levels during their trip. These findings suggest the need for safer messaging and the provision of anti-crime and anti-terror information by tourism industry stakeholders and government agencies. Further research is required, particularly in understanding the impact of terrorism on travelers from diverse backgrounds.

Behind the invisible walls: Understanding constraints on Muslim solo female travel

This study aims to investigate the challenges faced by solo-female travelers in Iranian societies and proposes measures to improve their experiences. To achieve this objective, a mixed-methods research design was employed in three phases. First, two-phased exploratory surveys were conducted to identify seven key constraints that affect the behavioral intentions of solo-female tourists, namely sociocultural, interpersonal, intrapersonal, religious, physical safety, practical, and structural factors. Furthermore, cross-impact-balanced analysis was employed to generate four consistent scenarios for the development of solo female tourism in Iran. The findings of this study provide valuable insights for policymakers and tourism industry stakeholders to enhance the experiences of solo-female travelers in Iran. The study's plausible scenario presents a number of measures that hold promise for mitigating constraints and improving the experiences of solo female travelers. These measures include online-community-building, mutual-adaptation, self-psychological empowerment, the establishment of female free zones, the overcoming of travel fears, technological-empowerment, and feminist-participatory-action.

HUBUNGAN ANTARA EXPERIENCE ECONOMY, TOUR QUALITY, DAN TOUR SATISFACTION DI DESA WISATA TAMANMARTANI

This study aims to analyze the relationship between the dimensions of experience economy, tour quality, and tour satisfaction in Tamanmartani tourist village. The dimensions of experience economy consist of education, entertainment, aesthetic, escapism. Each of the dimension reflects specific expectation that the tour participants have to the tour itself. 
 Through quantitative methods, questionnaires were used to collect data from tourists visiting Tamanmartani tourism village. A total of 100 respondents were involved in this study and the collected data were processed using Smart PLS.
 The result of the analysis shows that the dimensions of experience economy have a positive impact on the perception of tour quality and tour satisfaction. The results provide a better understanding of how the interaction between these factors can shape the perception, behavior, and image of tourist destinations. This study provides valuable information for destination managers, local governments, and tourism industry stakeholders to design more effective strategies in developing Tamanmartani tourism village.

Has COVID-19 changed the factors explaining the occupancy of Airbnb accommodation? Madrid as a case study

In the aftermath of the COVID-19 pandemic, the dynamics of short-term rental demand, particularly on Airbnb, have seen pivotal shifts. Using Madrid as a case study, this research used strategic sampling to investigate changes in occupancy, housing attributes, and online reputation. Leveraging a sup-likelihood ratio test and a hedonic-type pooled panel-data Logit regression, we identified a marked structural break. Findings revealed a diminished demand-side bargaining power, resulting in increased rental prices and reduced information transparency. These results offered critical insights for tourism industry stakeholders, especially destination managers and Airbnb hosts.

The Influence of Tourism Industry and Tourism Supply Chain on Tourism Performance

This study explores the influence of stakeholders in the tourism industry in improving the tourism supply chain and tourism performance. This research employs a quantitative method to explore the pivotal role of stakeholders in Central Kalimantan's tourism industry, encompassing academicians and tourism industry professionals. Utilizing a structured questionnaire, 117 participants were selected through proportional stratified sampling. Data analysis employed a structural equation model (SEM). The study's results reveal a statistically significant and positive influence of stakeholders on both the tourism supply chain and tourism performance. Furthermore, it highlights the reciprocal influence of tourism supply chains on tourism performance. This research offers valuable insights for future investigations and informs strategies to boost Indonesia's tourism sector.

The post-COVID-19 road-based tourism market: Negotiation of travel constraints

The novel coronavirus (COVID-19) not only transformed people’s choice of travel mode but also resulted in travel constraints and related behaviour. This study investigated travel constraints and constraint negotiation in post-COVID-19 road-based tourism in Indonesia. An online questionnaire survey was administered to Indonesian road tourists including self-drive tourists between May to July 2022. The resulting 510 completed questionnaires were analysed using Structural Equation Modelling. Road trips were more popular than flights during the recovery stage of COVID-19. Intrapersonal travel constraints were the largest problem for road-based tourism. This research advances the understanding of road trip travel behaviour in Indonesia and travel constraints after a crisis. The study applies the constraint negotiation model in a road-based travel context. Our study is among the first to combine road tourism psychology and tourism crisis/disaster management in the context of road-based tourism, which may be useful to policymakers and to tourism industry stakeholders in general.

The impact of community-based tourism development on the socio-economic dimensions of local communities in the coastal area of Ambon Island

Sustainable and well-developed tourism requires the participation of the community both as managers and as supporters of private industry. The existence of local communities in tourism activities is known as community-based tourism (CBT) which requires synergy between the government, local communities, and tourism industry stakeholders. This study aims to identify the tourism potential that can be developed into CBT, analyse the impact of the presence of CBT on socio-economic activities, and analyse the supporting and inhibiting factors for the development of CBT on the people surrounding the beach of Ambon Island. The results show that there are still several places that can be developed into CBT spots that located in districts of Leihitu, South Leitimur, Salahutu, Nusaniwe, and West Leihitu. Managed CBT still has the opportunity to improve facilities and various types of tourism products, especially those related to maritime affairs. The presence of CBT in the coastal area of Ambon Island has positive impacts on the community, new mindsets, behavior and business motivation, as well as increasing community creativity in economic business, especially culinary businesses, lodging, transportation services, and other tourism supporting products.

Kolaborasi Pentahelix dalam Smart Tourism Destination Kota Semarang: Studi Kasus Pada Aplikasi Lunpia

The development of tourism will provide many benefits for the community both economically, socially, and culturally. The integration of technology in the tourism sector is an innovation that supports sustainable tourism. The collaboration is a strategic step in tourism development. The tourism sector in Indonesia began to be developed using a collaborative approach in 2016 when the Ministry of Tourism release GBCAM synergy (governance, business, community, academy, and media) also known as the Pentahelix approach. These five elements are currently used as a model of sustainable tourism development. In the digital era, various technologies are applied to maximize the potential of tourist destinations to become smart tourism destinations. Semarang is one city apply smart tourism with the help of technology. This city develops a mobile application namely “Lunpia” to provide information about tourist destinations. This study aims to analyze the Pentahelix collaboration among tourism industry stakeholders regarding the development of the application. This study maps the role of each stakeholder in application development to support tourists in the post-pandemic situation. A qualitative approach was used in this study to get a deeper understanding of the study. The result indicated that the collaboration between stakeholders is not fully attained. The further result is discussed in the full article.

A study on impact of social media in promoting tourism

Social media is now acknowledged to have a significant part in sustaining and promoting the reputation of tourism locations. Unquestionably, the dynamic online environment plays an important role in promoting tourism on a worldwide scale. In order to use this knowledge to market Indian tourist attractions, it is therefore essential to understand how social media functions. The study analyses how netizens use social media for travel planning and exploring new destinations. It also discusses the benefits and difficulties associated with social media use by the tourism industry and other stakeholders. The study's theoretical social media and tourism analysis is based on secondary data sources. For the research survey method of qualitative and quantitative analysis were used. It helped to conveniently gather primary information about the extent of social media usage, tourists, and tourism establishments at tourism destinations. We analysed the impact of social media on tourism promotion with the help of a questionnaire. The study shows that more tourists are using social media for searching, identifying, making plans, making reservations, and sharing their experiences with various goods and services. In addition to highlighting social media's critical role in the marketing and growth of tourism, the study also points out some drawbacks of using it to advertise a particular location. In addition to analysing the tourism industry in India, this research looks at social media discourse and how it contributes to the marketing strategy.

Transformation in Destination Attractiveness Attributes after Covid 19 Pandemic: A Review

From a historical perspective, it is impossible to envision tourism without travellers’ mobility. However, the Covid-19 pandemic unlocked new avenues for tourism, including virtual travel. The pandemic seriously impacted the travel and tourism industries due to border closures that grounded the transportation industry and led to job losses. Historically, tourism has quickly bounced back after disasters, pandemics, and epidemics. Hence, a new outlook was developed with the introduction of the New Normal or “business as usual”. The pandemic of covid-19 has compelled tourism industry stakeholders to explore and analyze the transformative attributes of tourist destination attractiveness to revive the industry and regain tourists’ confidence. The research study is constructed on secondary data and literature analysis. The researchers have examined numerous studies representing transformative destination attractiveness to examine the characteristics. The study concludes that there is a paradigm shift in the attributes affecting tourist destination attractiveness which will help the tourism stakeholders in marketing and restarting tourism after the pandemic. These transformative attributes will increase the number of visitors, assisting the tourism industry's recovery from the pandemic.

Visitor emotional solidarity, segmentation and revisit intentions amidst COVID-19 pandemic: evidence from Panafest and emancipation festivals in Ghana

PurposeThis study examines the effect of festival visitors' emotional solidarity and segmentation on revisiting intentions to Ghana for the Panafest/Emancipation festivals during the COVID-19 pandemic.Design/methodology/approachThe study utilised data from a self-completed survey administered to festival-goers who attended the Panafest and Emancipation festivals in 2019 and 2021. In 2019, 782 questionnaires were sent to participants out of which 446 responded to the questionnaires. However, in 2021, 567 questionnaires were administered to the festival participants out of which 296 responded to the questionnaires. Multiple linear regression was performed using the ordinary least square (OLS) estimation technique.FindingsThe study found that emotional solidarity, gender, age, educational background and place of residence are important factors in predicting whether festival visitors will revisit Ghana for the Panafest and Emancipation festivals or not. Emotional solidarity was a positive predictor of revisit intentions, while gender and age also played a role with male and older visitors being more inclined to revisit Ghana for the festivals. The educational background had a positive and significant effect in 2021 but was insignificant in 2019. Place of residence had a significant but negative effect in 2021 due to the emergence of COVID-19.Practical implicationsThe study's findings suggest that stakeholders in Ghana's tourism industry, including the Ministry of Tourism, Arts and Culture, Ghana Tourist Authority, hotels and other hospitality services, should consider emotional solidarity and visitor segmentation when developing marketing strategies. Additionally, strategies to address the impact of COVID-19 on revisit intentions and spending should be considered.Originality/valueThis study contributes to the understanding of the factors that influence festival visitors' revisit intentions in Ghana and how the emergence of COVID-19 affects these intentions. The study's focus on emotional solidarity and visitor segmentation provides insights into developing effective marketing strategies in the tourism industry.

The Effect of Intellectual Capital, Industry Experience on the Application of Financial Accounting Standards in the Tourism Industry in Ambon City

This research study investigates the effect of intellectual capital and industry experience on applying financial accounting standards in the tourism industry. This research focuses specifically on the Ambon City context, aiming to provide insight into the factors that shape financial accounting practices in the local tourism sector. A quantitative approach involved collecting data from 150 entrepreneurs in Ambon City and analyzing the data with the help of SPSS version 25 software. The quantitative phase involved distributing survey questionnaires to tourism industry stakeholders. The research findings indicate a positive correlation between intellectual capital, industry experience, and practical application of financial accounting standards. Further regression analysis confirms the significant impact of intellectual capital and industry experience on compliance with financial accounting standards. This research highlights the importance of collaboration, knowledge sharing, and continuous professional development in promoting effective financial accounting practices. These findings have important implications for policymakers, industry practitioners, and researchers, who emphasize the need to invest in developing intellectual capital, fostering industry experience, and promoting collaboration within the tourism industry. Ultimately, this research contributes to an understanding of the dynamics between intellectual capital, industry experience, and application of financial accounting standards.

International tourism and business productivity: does eco-friendly technologies matter?

This research is aimed at determining whether eco-friendly technologies go beyond and above in providing business productivity in international tourism. For this, the study obtained data from different databases, and this data range consisted of 2010-2020. The study applied the co-integration analysis, random and static technique, regression analysis technique, split analysis technique, and mediating effect tests on Chinese data. This research shows that tourism business innovation contributed 12%, value proposition as 9%, internal marketing as 16%, customer relationship management as 19.3%, tourists motivation as 34.05%, tourists time as 18.94%, green technological adoption as 17.3%, tourists visit intention as 8.11%, and green technical transfer as 28.1% in study model. Thus, the findings confirmed that international tourism and business productivity have a dynamic empirical nexus with the mediating role of eco-friendly technology adoption. Furthermore, such findings are robust empirically and validate the empirical connections among the study variables. These results imply that Chinese tourism industry stakeholders may use eco-friendly technologies to good effect, significantly enhancing tourism business productivity, international tourists' satisfaction, and tourists' revisit intentions. Hence, the study also directs practical implications related to the study topicality and China's tourism industry for prudent growth acquisition.

Adaptability among inbound tour operators in a disrupted business environment

The acceleration of technological innovations is reshaping service industries, including the travel business. As competitive forces intensify, inbound tour operators face the challenge of adapting to both revolutionary technologies and business model innovations as they develop destination product offerings ushering a smarter tourism ecosystem. This paper explores how inbound tour operating businesses are being impacted by technology‐enabled innovations and proposes strategic responses to the disruptions affecting their businesses. The investigators addressed this gap through immersion in relevant industry communities involving participant observations and in‐depth interviewing. The authors examine prevailing and emerging models of inbound tour operations, drawing upon the service‐dominant logic framework and placing particular emphasis on value propositions. The present study formulates a comprehensive value co‐creation framework encompassing tourism industry stakeholders, which involves assessing their value propositions and creating focused R&D initiatives that are customized to market needs. It is essential to modularize in‐destination services to enable mass customization of travel experiences and to encourage value co‐creation that empowers travelers.

Performances of Holiday Climate Index (HCI) for Urban and Beach Destinations in Sri Lanka under Changing Climate

Climate change has had a significant impact on the tourism industry in many countries, leading to changes in policies and adaptations to attract more visitors. However, there are few studies on the effects of climate change on Sri Lanka’s tourism industry and income, despite its importance as a destination for tourists. A study was conducted to analyze the holiday climate index (HCI) for Sri Lanka’s urban and beach destinations to address this gap. The analysis covered historical years (2010–2018) and forecasted climatic scenarios (2021–2050 and 2071–2100), and the results were presented as colored maps to highlight the importance of HCI scores. Visual analysis showed some correlation between HCI scores and tourist arrivals, but the result of the overall correlation analysis was not significant. However, a country-specific correlation analysis revealed interesting findings, indicating that the changing climate can be considered among other factors that impact tourist arrivals. The research proposes that authorities assess the outcomes of the study and conduct further research to develop adaptive plans for Sri Lanka’s future tourism industry. The study also investigated potential scenarios for beach and urban destinations under two climate scenarios (RCP 4.5 and RCP 8.5) for the near and far future, presenting the findings to tourism industry stakeholders for any necessary policy changes. As Sri Lanka expects more Chinese visitors in the future due to ongoing development projects, this study could be valuable for policymakers and industry stakeholders when adapting to changing climate and future tourist behavior. While more research is needed to fully understand the effects of climate change on Sri Lanka’s tourism industry, this study serves as a starting point for future investigations.

ОСОБЛИВОСТІ ФОРМУВАННЯ СТРАТЕГІЇ СТАЛОГО РОЗВИТКУ ТУРИЗМУ В СУЧАСНИХ УМОВАХ: ДОСВІД НІМЕЧЧИНИ

The article examines the peculiarities of the sustainable development of tourism in Germany in the modern conditions of climate change. It is noted that the country has a huge tourist attraction, which is determined by the presence of natural resources, cultural and historical attractions, developed infrastructure of traditional health resorts and modern architecture of large cities, which have all the possibilities for organizing various types of tourism. The contribution of tourism to the German economy is quite significant and is characterized by the following indicators: it ranks second in terms of revenue after mechanical engineering, creates 4% of the country's gross domestic product, and provides jobs for 6 million people. The results of a survey of tourism companies regarding their attitude to sustainable development in view of all economic challenges during the coronavirus period are presented. The organizational chart of state tourism bodies in Germany is characterized and the main responsibility for the development, formation and promotion of the country's tourism policy is indicated. The federal government has primary responsibility for the development, formulation and promotion of tourism policy. It is assisted by the Tourism Advisory Council, which brings together the interests of government, the tourism industry, academia and other stakeholders. The rating of the world's most sustainable cities was reviewed and it was determined that Munich and Frankfurt am Main are among the top ten of the rating. Hamburg and Berlin ranked 17th and 18th, respectively. This index ranks 100 cities around the world based on three criteria: social and societal factors such as mobility and quality of life, environmental factors including energy consumption, pollution and emissions, and economic performance. The analysis of the positive experience of Germany in the development of its tourism industry showed that it can be used to solve problems in the development of a similar industry in Ukraine, namely: in improving the system of state regulation of tourism, as well as in overcoming problems and improving the process of promoting tourism opportunities in Ukraine country and abroad. The further successful implementation of the principles of sustainability in the development of tourism and the need to consolidate the efforts of all stakeholders at all levels, taking into account the interests of all groups, including local communities, tourists, representatives of the tourism business, etc., were emphasized. The role of the government is undeniably important, as it is called upon to develop a strategic basis for planning the development of the tourism industry taking into account the principles of sustainability, to ensure the study of the recreational capacity of territories, to initiate the development of certification systems, indicators of sustainable development in order to monitor the consequences of tourism activities from a social, ecological and economic point of view.

Sustainable Tourism During Covid-19: Literature Review and Research Agenda

The work systematically reviews the articles published on sustainable tourism during the COVID-19 pandemic. The paper focuses on the current state of knowledge on sustainable tourism, identifies the relevant opportunities for successful implementation and development of sustainability in the tourism industry and gives future directions. Scopus and Web of Science databases were searched, and 184 papers were identified from 2020-to 2021. Each article was evaluated for the study's objective, the data collection steps, the data synthesis process, and the quality measures. The systematic review findings show an increasing interest in research on sustainable tourism adoption post-COVID-19 pandemic in the tourism industry. This is the very first article, which synthesises the published literature on sustainable tourism during COVID-19 pandemic, through Systematic Literature Review method. Our findings indicate that the applications of sustainability in tourism have been focused on all the tourism industry stakeholders. The study will be helpful to predict the extent of current and potential future pandemic effects on the tourism industry. It will also be beneficial for practitioners and policymakers to design new policies aimed at operational sustainability and capacity building of the tourism industry as an active recovery policy for counter-attacking the impact of COVID-19 on tourism.
