Sparse-View Spectral CT Reconstruction Based on Tensor Decomposition and Total Generalized Variation

Spectral computed tomography (CT)-reconstructed images often exhibit severe noise and artifacts, which compromise the practical application of spectral CT imaging technology. Methods that use tensor dictionary learning (TDL) have shown superior performance, but it is difficult to obtain a high-quality pre-trained global tensor dictionary in practice. In order to resolve this problem, this paper develops an algorithm called tensor decomposition with total generalized variation (TGV) for sparse-view spectral CT reconstruction. In the process of constructing tensor volumes, the proposed algorithm utilizes the non-local similarity feature of images to construct fourth-order tensor volumes and uses Canonical Polyadic (CP) tensor decomposition instead of pre-trained tensor dictionaries to further explore the inter-channel correlation of images. Simultaneously, introducing the TGV regularization term to characterize spatial sparsity features, the use of higher-order derivatives can better adapt to different image structures and noise levels. The proposed objective minimization model has been addressed using the split-Bregman algorithm. To assess the performance of the proposed algorithm, several numerical simulations and actual preclinical mice are studied. The final results demonstrate that the proposed algorithm has an enormous improvement in the quality of spectral CT images when compared to several existing competing algorithms.

Hybrid spectral CT system with clinical rapid kVp-switching x-ray tube and dual-layer detector for improved iodine quantification.

Spectral computed tomography (CT) is a powerful diagnostic tool offering quantitative material decomposition results that enhance clinical imaging by providing physiologic and functional insights. Iodine, a widely used contrast agent, improves visualization in various clinical contexts. However, accurately detecting low-concentration iodine presents challenges in spectral CT systems, particularly crucial for conditions like pancreatic cancer assessment. In this study, we present preliminary results from our hybrid spectral CT instrumentation which includes clinical-grade hardware (rapid kVp-switching x-ray tube, dual-layer detector). This combination expands spectral datasets from two to four channels, wherein we hypothesize improved quantification accuracy for low-dose and low-iodine concentration cases. We modulate the system duty cycle to evaluate its impact on quantification noise and bias. We evaluate iodine quantification performance by comparing two hybrid weighting strategies alongside rapid kVp-switching. This evaluation is performed with a polyamide phantom containing seven iodine inserts ranging from 0.5 to 20 mg/mL. In comparison to alternative methodologies, the maximum separation configuration, incorporating data from both the 80 kVp, low photon energy detector layer and the 140 kVp, high photon energy detector layer produces spectral images containing low quantitative noise and bias. This study presents initial evaluations on a hybrid spectral CT system, leveraging clinical hardware to demonstrate the potential for enhanced precision and sensitivity in spectral imaging. This research holds promise for advancing spectral CT imaging performance across diverse clinical scenarios.

Synthesis of virtual monoenergetic images from kilovoltage peak images using wavelet loss enhanced CycleGAN for improving radiomics features reproducibility.

Dual-energy computed tomography (CT) can provide a range of image information beyond conventional CT through virtual monoenergetic images (VMIs). The purpose of this study was to investigate the impact of material decomposition in detector-based spectral CT on radiomics features and effectiveness of using deep learning-based image synthesis to improve the reproducibility of radiomics features. In this paper, spectral CT image data from 45 esophageal cancer patients were collected for investigation retrospectively. First, we computed the correlation coefficient of radiomics features between conventional kilovoltage peak (kVp) CT images and VMI. Then, a wavelet loss-enhanced CycleGAN (WLL-CycleGAN) with paired loss terms was developed to synthesize virtual monoenergetic CT images from the corresponding conventional single-energy CT (SECT) images for improving radiomics reproducibility. Finally, the radiomic features in 6 different categories, including gray-level co-occurrence matrix (GLCM), gray-level difference matrix (GLDM), gray-level run-length matrix (GLRLM), gray-level size-zone matrix (GLSZM), neighborhood gray-tone difference matrix (NGTDM), and wavelet, were extracted from the gross tumor volumes from conventional single energy CT, synthetic virtual monoenergetic CT images, and virtual monoenergetic CT images. Comparison between errors in the VMI and synthetic VMI (sVMI) suggested that the performance of our proposed deep learning method improved the radiomic feature accuracy. Material decomposition of dual-layer dual-energy CT (DECT) can substantially influence the reproducibility of the radiomic features, and the degree of impact is feature dependent. The average reduction of radiomics errors for 15 patients in testing sets was 96.9% for first-order, 12.1% for GLCM, 12.9% for GLDM, 15.7% for GLRLM, 50.3% for GLSZM, 53.4% for NGTDM, and 6% for wavelet features. The work revealed that material decomposition has a significant effect on the radiomic feature values. The deep learning-based method reduced the influence of material decomposition in VMIs and might improve the robustness and reproducibility of radiomic features in esophageal cancer. Quantitative results demonstrated that our proposed wavelet loss-enhanced paired CycleGAN outperforms the original CycleGAN.

Preoperative prediction of lymphovascular and perineural invasion in gastric cancer using spectral computed tomography imaging and machine learning.

Lymphovascular invasion (LVI) and perineural invasion (PNI) are important prognostic factors for gastric cancer (GC) that indicate an increased risk of metastasis and poor outcomes. Accurate preoperative prediction of LVI/PNI status could help clinicians identify high-risk patients and guide treatment decisions. However, prior models using conventional computed tomography (CT) images to predict LVI or PNI separately have had limited accuracy. Spectral CT provides quantitative enhancement parameters that may better capture tumor invasion. We hypothesized that a predictive model combining clinical and spectral CT parameters would accurately preoperatively predict LVI/PNI status in GC patients. To develop and test a machine learning model that fuses spectral CT parameters and clinical indicators to predict LVI/PNI status accurately. This study used a retrospective dataset involving 257 GC patients (training cohort, n = 172; validation cohort, n = 85). First, several clinical indicators, including serum tumor markers, CT-TN stages and CT-detected extramural vein invasion (CT-EMVI), were extracted, as were quantitative spectral CT parameters from the delineated tumor regions. Next, a two-step feature selection approach using correlation-based methods and information gain ranking inside a 10-fold cross-validation loop was utilized to select informative clinical and spectral CT parameters. A logistic regression (LR)-based nomogram model was subsequently constructed to predict LVI/PNI status, and its performance was evaluated using the area under the receiver operating characteristic curve (AUC). In both the training and validation cohorts, CT T3-4 stage, CT-N positive status, and CT-EMVI positive status are more prevalent in the LVI/PNI-positive group and these differences are statistically significant (P < 0.05). LR analysis of the training group showed preoperative CT-T stage, CT-EMVI, single-energy CT values of 70 keV of venous phase (VP-70 keV), and the ratio of standardized iodine concentration of equilibrium phase (EP-NIC) were independent influencing factors. The AUCs of VP-70 keV and EP-NIC were 0.888 and 0.824, respectively, which were slightly greater than those of CT-T and CT-EMVI (AUC = 0.793, 0.762). The nomogram combining CT-T stage, CT-EMVI, VP-70 keV and EP-NIC yielded AUCs of 0.918 (0.866-0.954) and 0.874 (0.784-0.936) in the training and validation cohorts, which are significantly higher than using each of single independent factors (P < 0.05). The study found that using portal venous and EP spectral CT parameters allows effective preoperative detection of LVI/PNI in GC, with accuracy boosted by integrating clinical markers.

Surface modification effect on contrast agent efficiency for X-ray based spectral photon-counting scanner/luminescence imaging: from fundamental study to in vivo proof of concept.

X-Ray imaging techniques are among the most widely used modalities in medical imaging and their constant evolution has led to the emergence of new technologies. The new generation of computed tomography (CT) systems - spectral photonic counting CT (SPCCT) and X-ray luminescence optical imaging - are examples of such powerful techniques. With these new technologies the rising demand for new contrast agents has led to extensive research in the field of nanoparticles and the possibility to merge the modalities appears to be highly attractive. In this work, we propose the design of lanthanide-based nanocrystals as a multimodal contrast agent with the two aforementioned technologies, allowing SPCCT and optical imaging at the same time. We present a systematic study on the effect of the Tb3+ doping level and surface modification on the generation of contrast with SPCCT and the luminescence properties of GdF3:Tb3+ nanocrystals (NCs), comparing different surface grafting with organic ligands and coatings with silica to make these NCs bio-compatible. A comparison of the luminescence properties of these NCs with UV revealed that the best results were obtained for the Gd0.9Tb0.1F3 composition. This property was confirmed under X-ray excitation in microCT and with SPCCT. Moreover, we could demonstrate that the intensity of the luminescence and the excited state lifetime are strongly affected by the surface modification. Furthermore, whatever the chemical nature of the ligand, the contrast with SPCCT did not change. Finally, the successful proof of concept of multimodal imaging was performed in vivo with nude mice in the SPCCT taking advantage of the so-called color K-edge imaging method.

SOUL-Net: A Sparse and Low-Rank Unrolling Network for Spectral CT Image Reconstruction.

Spectral computed tomography (CT) is an emerging technology, that generates a multienergy attenuation map for the interior of an object and extends the traditional image volume into a 4-D form. Compared with traditional CT based on energy-integrating detectors, spectral CT can make full use of spectral information, resulting in high resolution and providing accurate material quantification. Numerous model-based iterative reconstruction methods have been proposed for spectral CT reconstruction. However, these methods usually suffer from difficulties such as laborious parameter selection and expensive computational costs. In addition, due to the image similarity of different energy bins, spectral CT usually implies a strong low-rank prior, which has been widely adopted in current iterative reconstruction models. Singular value thresholding (SVT) is an effective algorithm to solve the low-rank constrained model. However, the SVT method requires a manual selection of thresholds, which may lead to suboptimal results. To relieve these problems, in this article, we propose a sparse and low-rank unrolling network (SOUL-Net) for spectral CT image reconstruction, that learns the parameters and thresholds in a data-driven manner. Furthermore, a Taylor expansion-based neural network backpropagation method is introduced to improve the numerical stability. The qualitative and quantitative results demonstrate that the proposed method outperforms several representative state-of-the-art algorithms in terms of detail preservation and artifact reduction.

Image quality improvement of a one-step spectral CT reconstruction on a prototype photon-counting scanner

Objective. X-ray spectral computed tomography (CT) allows for material decomposition (MD). This study compared a one-step material decomposition MD algorithm with a two-step reconstruction MD algorithm using acquisitions of a prototype CT scanner with a photon-counting detector (PCD). Approach. MD and CT reconstruction may be done in two successive steps, i.e. decompose the data in material sinograms which are then reconstructed in material CT images, or jointly in a one-step algorithm. The one-step algorithm reconstructed material CT images by maximizing their Poisson log-likelihood in the projection domain with a spatial regularization in the image domain. The two-step algorithm maximized first the Poisson log-likelihood without regularization to decompose the data in material sinograms. These sinograms were then reconstructed into material CT images by least squares minimization, with the same spatial regularization as the one step algorithm. A phantom simulating the CT angiography clinical task was scanned and the data used to measure noise and spatial resolution properties. Low dose carotid CT angiographies of 4 patients were also reconstructed with both algorithms and analyzed by a radiologist. The image quality and diagnostic clinical task were evaluated with a clinical score. Main results. The phantom data processing demonstrated that the one-step algorithm had a better spatial resolution at the same noise level or a decreased noise value at matching spatial resolution. Regularization parameters leading to a fair comparison were selected for the patient data reconstruction. On the patient images, the one-step images received higher scores compared to the two-step algorithm for image quality and diagnostic. Significance. Both phantom and patient data demonstrated how a one-step algorithm improves spectral CT image quality over the implemented two-step algorithm but requires a longer computation time. At a low radiation dose, the one-step algorithm presented good to excellent clinical scores for all the spectral CT images.

Application of spectral CT in diagnosis, classification and prognostic monitoring of gastrointestinal cancers: progress, limitations and prospects

Gastrointestinal (GI) cancer is the leading cause of cancer-related deaths worldwide. Computed tomography (CT) is an important auxiliary tool for the diagnosis, evaluation, and prognosis prediction of gastrointestinal tumors. Spectral CT is another major CT revolution after spiral CT and multidetector CT. Compared to traditional CT which only provides single-parameter anatomical diagnostic mode imaging, spectral CT can achieve multi-parameter imaging and provide a wealth of image information to optimize disease diagnosis. In recent years, with the rapid development and application of spectral CT, more and more studies on the application of spectral CT in the characterization of GI tumors have been published. For this review, we obtained a substantial volume of literature, focusing on spectral CT imaging of gastrointestinal cancers, including esophageal, stomach, colorectal, liver, and pancreatic cancers. We found that spectral CT can not only accurately stage gastrointestinal tumors before operation but also distinguish benign and malignant GI tumors with improved image quality, and effectively evaluate the therapeutic response and prognosis of the lesions. In addition, this paper also discusses the limitations and prospects of using spectral CT in GI cancer diagnosis and treatment.

Initial Clinical Images From a Second-Generation Prototype Silicon-Based Photon-Counting Computed Tomography System

To demonstrate the feasibility andpotential of using a second-generation prototype photon-counting computed tomography (CT) system to provide simultaneous high spatial resolution images and high spectral resolution material information across a range of routine imaging tasks using clinical patient exposure levels. The photon-counting system employs an innovative silicon-based photon-counting detector to provide a balanced approach to ultra-high-resolution spectral CT imaging. An initial cohort of volunteer subjects was imaged using the prototype photon-counting system. Acquisition technique parameters and radiation dose exposures were guided by routine clinical exposure levels used at the institution. Images were reconstructed in native slice thickness using an early version of a spectral CT reconstruction algorithm Samples of images across a range of clinical tasks were selected and presented for review. Clinical cases are presented across inner ear, carotid angiography, chest, and musculoskeletal imaging tasks. Initial reconstructed images illustrate ultra-high spatial resolution imaging. The fine detail of small structures and pathologies is clearly visualized, and structural boundaries are well delineated. The prototype system additionally provides concomitant spectral information with high spatial resolution. This initial study demonstrates that routine imaging at clinically appropriate patient exposure levels is feasible using a novel deep-silicon photon-counting detector CT system. Furthermore, a deep-silicon detector may provide a balanced approach to photon-counting CT, providing high spatial resolution imaging with simultaneous high-fidelity spectral information.

Establishing quality control action limits for CT number accuracy in spectral images using an American College of Radiology phantom.

Computed tomography (CT) number accuracy is important for quality assurance in CT imaging. However, in dual-energy CT imaging, there are no widely used action limits for CT number accuracy in spectral images, information that is urgently needed. To establish action limits for spectral CT images using longitudinal spectral data and an American College of Radiology (ACR) phantom. An ACR accreditation phantom was scanned routinely as part of a quality control program in our institution. We selected and analyzed 57 continuous weekly scans. The CT numbers or the density values of conventional and spectral images, including virtual monoenergetic images (40, 50, 70, 120, and 200keV), iodine maps, calcium suppressed, and virtual non-contrast images, were measured in the four inserts (solid water, bone, polyethylene, and acrylic) of the phantom. Longitudinal data were analyzed for correlation using Pearson's correlation coefficient (r) and standard deviation (SD). The SD ratios between spectral images and conventional images were calculated and the action limits for spectral images were established based on the action limits from the ACR. Strong to very strong correlations (r>0.70 or r<-0.70) were found among most spectral image types except the 200keV images using solid water, polyethylene, and acrylic inserts (r=[-0.45, 0.64]). The SD ratio was highest for the 40keV images, ranging from 2.8 to 6.5. The action limits of the bone insert were baseline±5.3mg/mL for the iodine map and ranged from baseline±23.0 HU to baseline±391.9 HU for the other image types. The action limits for solid water ranged from baseline±4.1 HU to baseline±25.3 HU. The results for the polyethylene and the acrylic insert were close to those for solid water. Baselines can be established using the average of the initial 5∼10 measurements. Using longitudinal data, we estimated the action limits for CT number accuracy in the spectral images. This paves the way for establishing a comprehensive quality control program for spectral CT imaging.

Value of spectral computed tomography-derived quantitative parameters based on full volume analysis in the diagnosis of benign/malignant and pathological subtypes of solitary pulmonary nodules.

Conventional dynamic computed tomography (CT) has a low specificity for the distinction between benign and malignant solitary pulmonary nodules (SPNs), and spectral CT has been proposed as a potential alternative. We aimed to investigate the role of quantitative parameters based on full-volume spectral CT in the differential diagnosis of SPNs. This retrospective study included spectral CT images of 100 patients with pathologically confirmed SPNs (78 and 22 in the malignant and benign groups, respectively). All cases were confirmed by postoperative pathology, percutaneous biopsy, and bronchoscopic biopsy. Multiple quantitative parameters derived from spectral CT were extracted from whole-tumor volume and standardized. Differences in quantitative parameters between groups were statistically analyzed. Diagnostic efficiency was evaluated by generating a receiver operating characteristic (ROC) curve. Between-group differences were evaluated using an independent sample t-test or Mann-Whitney U test. Interobserver repeatability was assessed using intraclass correlation coefficients (ICCs) and Bland-Altman plots. Spectral CT-derived quantitative parameters, except attenuation difference between the SPN in the 70 keV and arterial enhancement [ΔS-A(70 keV)], were significantly higher for malignant SPNs than for benign nodules (P<0.05). In the subgroup analysis, most parameters could distinguish between the benign and adenocarcinoma groups, and between the benign and squamous cell carcinoma groups (P<0.05). Only 1 parameter could differentiate the adenocarcinoma and squamous cell carcinoma groups (P=0.020). ROC curve analysis indicated that normalized arterial enhancement fraction in the 70 keV (NEF70 keV), normalized iodine concentration (NIC), and Δ70 keV had high diagnostic efficacy for differentiating SPNs between the benign and malignant SPNs [area under the curve (AUC): 0.867, 0.866, and 0.848, respectively] and between the benign and adenocarcinoma groups (AUC: 0.873, 0.872, and 0.874, respectively). The multiparameters derived from spectral CT exhibited satisfactory interobserver repeatability (ICC: 0.856-0.996). Our study suggests that quantitative parameters derived from whole-volume spectral CT may be useful to improve discrimination of SPNs.

Spectral CT imaging: Technical principles of dual-energy CT and multi-energy photon-counting CT.

Spectral computed tomography (CT) imaging encompasses a unique generation of CT systems based on a simple principle that makes use of the energy-dependent information present in CT images. Over the past two decades this principle has been expanded with the introduction of dual-energy CT systems. The first generation of spectral CT systems, represented either by dual-source or dual-layer technology, opened up a new imaging approach in the radiology community with their ability to overcome the limitations of tissue characterization encountered with conventional CT. Its expansion worldwide can also be considered as an important leverage for the recent groundbreaking technology based on a new chain of detection available on photon counting CT systems, which holds great promise for extending CT towards multi-energy CT imaging. The purpose of this article was to detail the basic principles and techniques of spectral CT with a particular emphasis on the newest technical developments of dual-energy and multi-energy CT systems.

Achieving safe and high-performance gastrointestinal tract spectral CT imaging with small-molecule lanthanide complex

BackgroundNon-intrusive imaging of gastrointestinal (GI) tract using computed tomography (CT) contrast agents is of the most significant issues in the diagnosis and treatment of GI diseases. Moreover, spectral CT, which can generate monochromatic images to display the X-ray attenuation characteristics of contrast agents, provides a better imaging sensitivity for diagnose inflammatory bowel disease (IBD) than convention CT imaging.MethodsHerein, a convenient and one-pot synthesis method is provided for the fabrication of small-molecule lanthanide complex Holmium-tetraazacyclododecane-1, 4, 7, 10-tetraacetic acid (Ho-DOTA) as a biosafe and high-performance spectral CT contrast agent for GI imaging with IBD. In vivo CT imaging was administered with both healthy mice and colitis mice induced by dextran sodium sulfate.ResultsWe found that Ho-DOTA accumulated in inflammation sites of large intestines and produced high CT contrast compared with healthy mice. Both in vitro and in vivo experimental results also showed that Ho-DOTA provided much more diagnostic sensitivity and accuracy due to the excellent X-ray attenuation characteristics of Ho-DOTA compared with clinical iodinate agent. Furthermore, the proposed contrast media could be timely excreted from the body via the urinary and digestive system, keeping away from the potential side effects due to long-term retention in vivo.ConclusionAccordingly, Ho-DOTA with excellent biocompatibility can be useful as a potential high-performance spectral CT contrast agent for further clinical imaging of gastrointestinal tract and diagnosis of intestinal system diseases.Graphical

Virtual monochromatic spectral CT imaging in preoperative evaluations for intraductal spread of breast cancer: comparison with conventional CT and MRI

PurposeTo investigate the efficacy of virtual monochromatic spectral computed tomography imaging (VMI) in the preoperative evaluation for intraductal spread of breast cancer.Materials and methodsTwenty-four women who underwent spectral CT and were pathologically diagnosed with ductal carcinoma with a ≥ 2-cm noninvasive component were retrospectively enrolled in Group 1. Twenty-two women with 22 lesions pathologically diagnosed with ductal carcinoma in situ or microinvasive carcinoma were enrolled in Group 2. We compared the contrast-to-noise ratios (CNRs) of the lesions on conventional 120-kVp CT images and 40-keV VMIs in Group 1. Two board-certified radiologists measured the maximum diameters of enhancing areas on 120-kVp CT, 40-keV VMI, and MRI in Group 2 and compared with histopathological sizes.ResultsThe quantitative assessment of Group 1 revealed that the mean ± SD of the CNRs in the 40-keV images were significantly greater than those in the 120-kVp images (5.5 ± 1.9 vs. 3.6 ± 1.5, p < 0.0001). The quantitative assessment of Group 2 demonstrated that the lesion size observed in the conventional 120-kVp CT images by both readers was significantly underestimated as compared to the histopathological size (p = 0.017, 0.048), whereas both readers identified no significant differences between the lesion size measured on 40-keV VMI and the histopathological data. In a comparison with MRI, 40-keV VMI provided measurement within a 10-mm error range in more lesions as compared to the conventional 120-kVp CT.ConclusionVMI improves the evaluation of intraductal spread and is useful for the preoperative evaluations of breast cancer.

Spectral CT reconstruction via low-rank representation and structure preserving regularization

Objective: With the development of computed tomography (CT) imaging technology, it is possible to acquire multi-energy data by spectral CT. Being different from conventional CT, the X-ray energy spectrum of spectral CT is cut into several narrow bins which leads to the result that only a part of photon can be collected in each individual energy channel.This can severely degrade the image qualities. To address this problem, we propose a spectral CT reconstruction algorithm based on low-rank representation and structure preserving regularization in this paper. Approach: To make full use of the prior knowledge about both the inter-channel correlation and the sparsity in gradient domain of inner-channel data, this paper combines a low-rank correlation descriptor with a structure extraction operator as priori regularization terms for spectral CT reconstruction. Furthermore, a split-Bregman based iterative algorithm is developed to solve the reconstruction model. Finally, we propose a multi-channel adaptive parameters generation strategy according to CT values of each individual energy channel. Main results: Experimental results on numerical simulations and real mouse data indicate that the proposed algorithm achieves higher accuracy on both reconstruction and material decomposition than the methods based on simultaneous algebraic reconstruction technique (SART), total variation minimization (TVM), total variation with low-rank (LRTV), and spatial-spectral cube matching frame (SSCMF). Compared with SART, our algorithm improves the feature similarity (FSIM) by 40.4% on average for numerical simulation reconstruction, whereas TVM, LRTV, and SSCMF correspond to 26.1%, 28.2%, and 29.5%, respectively. Significance: We outline a multi-channel reconstruction algorithm tailored for spectral CT. The qualitative and quantitative comparisons present a significant improvement of image quality, indicating its promising potential in spectral CT imaging.

Computed tomography data based X-ray spectrum estimation method

X-ray spectrum plays an important role in computed tomography (CT) beam hardening correction, dual spectral X-ray CT imaging, and radiation dose calculation. The commonly used method to estimate X-ray spectrum is to estimate the spectra indirectly by using the attenuation data of X-ray passing through the phantoms with different thickness. Since the problem is seriously ill-conditioned, how to choose a suitable mold, establish scanning models and construct solving methods to improve the robustness and accuracy of energy spectrum estimation is the focus of this paper. In this work, in the absence scattering, we present a method to estimate the distribution of the X-ray spectrum by using CT scanning data. In this method, the mutual verification relationship between spectral estimation and image reconstruction is considered. That is, when the spectral estimation is correct, the spectral information can be used to construct a correction algorithm to remove hardening artifacts, and the image without hardening artifacts can be obtained. When the reconstructed image has no hardening artifact, it can indirectly prove that the estimated spectrum is accurate. For single-material molds, when there is no hardening artifact, CT images are fragmentation constant, which can be described by image total variation (TV) minimum. In this method, the mutual corroboration relationship is used to construct an optimization model, and then the X-ray spectrum is estimated and CT images without hardening artifacts are reconstructed through alternate iterative solutions. The characteristic of this method is that it does not necessitate obtaining the cross-line length of the measured mold with different thickness in advance, and it does not require high production precision of the said mold either. When there is a small amount of scattering in CT scanning data, the proposed method can also better estimate the energy spectrum, except for the large deviation in the high-energy part. However, as the scattering ratio increases, the high-energy portion of the energy spectrum will increase, resulting in the estimated spectrum differing greatly from the actual spectrum. Therefore, in the actual experiment, we add collimors in front of the X-ray source and detector to reduce the influence of scattering on the energy spectrum estimation. The numerical result and experimental result show that the proposed method can accurately and robustly estimate the X-ray energy spectrum.

Flexible use of commercial rhenium disulfide for various theranostic applications.

Rhenium disulfide (ReS2) with distinct physicochemical properties has shown promising potential in disease theranostics, such as drug delivery, computed tomography (CT), radiotherapy, and photothermal therapy (PTT). However, the synthesis and post-modification of ReS2 agents for different application scenarios are time- and energy-consuming, which seriously hinders the clinical translation of ReS2. Herein, we proposed three facile excipient strategies for different theranostic applications of ReS2 just through the flexible use of commercial ReS2 powder. Three excipients, including sodium alginate (ALG), xanthan gum (XG), and ultraviolet-cured resin (UCR), were used to prepare different dosage forms of commercial ReS2 powder, like hydrogel, suspension, and capsule, respectively. These dosage forms of ReS2 with distinct characteristics showed great potential for second near-infrared window PTT against tumours, gastric spectral CT imaging, and functional evaluation of the digestive tract in vivo. In addition, these ReS2 formulations exhibited good biocompatibility both in vitro and in vivo, showing a promising prospect for clinical transformation. More importantly, the facile excipient strategies for commercial agents pave a bridge to the development and wide bioapplication of many other theranostic biomaterials.

Spectral CT reconstruction via Spectral-Image Tensor and Bidirectional Image-gradient minimization

It is challenging to obtain good image quality in spectral computed tomography (CT) as the photon-number for the photon-counting detectors is limited for each narrow energy bin. This results in a lower signal to noise ratio (SNR) for the projections. To handle this issue, we first formulate the weight bidirectional image gradient with L0-norm constraint of spectral CT image. Then, as a new regularizer, bidirectional image gradient with L0-norm constraint is introduced into the tensor decomposition model, generating the Spectral-Image Tensor and Bidirectional Image-gradient Minimization (SITBIM) algorithm. Finally, the split-Bregman method is employed to optimize the proposed SITBIM mathematical model. The experiments on the numerical mouse phantom and real mouse experiments are designed to validate and evaluate the SITBIM method. The results demonstrate that the SITBIM can outperform other state-of-the-art methods (including TVM, TV + LR, SSCMF and NLCTF). FONT-SIR: Fourth-Order Nonlocal Tensor Decomposition Model for Spectral CT Image Reconstruction.

Spectral computed tomography (CT) reconstructs images from different spectral data through photon counting detectors (PCDs). However, due to the limited number of photons and the counting rate in the corresponding spectral segment, the reconstructed spectral images are usually affected by severe noise. In this paper, we propose a fourth-order nonlocal tensor decomposition model for spectral CT image reconstruction (FONT-SIR). To maintain the original spatial relationships among similar patches and improve the imaging quality, similar patches without vectorization are grouped in both spectral and spatial domains simultaneously to form the fourth-order processing tensor unit. The similarity of different patches is measured with the cosine similarity of latent features extracted using principal component analysis (PCA). By imposing the constraints of the weighted nuclear and total variation (TV) norms, each fourth-order tensor unit is decomposed into a low-rank component and a sparse component, which can efficiently remove noise and artifacts while preserving the structural details. Moreover, the alternating direction method of multipliers (ADMM) is employed to solve the decomposition model. Extensive experimental results on both simulated and real data sets demonstrate that the proposed FONT-SIR achieves superior qualitative and quantitative performance compared with several state-of-the-art methods.

An extended primal-dual algorithm framework for nonconvex problems: application to image reconstruction in spectral CT

Using the convexity of each component of the forward operator, we propose an extended primal-dual algorithm framework for solving a kind of nonconvex and probably nonsmooth optimization problems in spectral computed tomography (CT) image reconstruction. Following the proposed algorithm framework, we present six different iterative schemes or algorithms, and then establish the relationship to some existing algorithms. Under appropriate conditions, we prove the convergence of these schemes for the general case. Moreover, when the proposed schemes are applied to solving a specific problem in spectral CT image reconstruction, namely, total variation regularized nonlinear least-squares problem with nonnegative constraint, we also prove the particular convergence for these schemes by using some special properties. The numerical experiments with densely and sparsely data demonstrate the convergence and accuracy of the proposed algorithm framework in terms of visual inspection of images of realistic anatomic complexity and quantitative analysis with metrics structural similarity, peak signal-to-noise ratio, mean square error and maximum pixel difference. We analyze the computational complexity of these schemes, and discuss the extended applications of this algorithm framework in other nonlinear imaging problems.
