Co-transport of citrate-modified biochar nanoparticles and released plant-available silicon in saturated porous media: Effect of LMWOAs and solution chemistry

Citrate-modified biochar nanoparticles (CBCNPs) represent a promising amendment with plant-available silicon (PASi) releasing capacity. However, the co-transport behavior with released PASi remain poorly understood. This study investigated their co-transport in saturated porous media under various solution chemistry and low molecular weight organic acids (LMWOAs). Experimental and two-site kinetic model results revealed that higher ionic strength caused favorable aggregation and size-selective, hindering CBCNPs transport. Divalent Ca2+ ions retained CBCNPs more effectively than K+ due to stronger charge screening and cation bridging. The pH buffering capacity of CBCNPs resulted in consistent transport behavior across a broad pH range (4-8). XDLVO calculation clarified the impact mechanisms of IS, ion types and pH on CBCNPs transport. Furthermore, LMWOAs exhibited a time-dependent blocking effect on CBCNPs transport. Oxalic acid (OA) and citric acid (CA) facilitated CBCNPs transport though mechanisms beyond XDLVO, including steric hindrance, competitive adsorption, and surface hydrophilicity. The presence of LMWOAs significantly hindered PASi co-transport, with the inhibitory effect ranked as acetic acid (AA) ≈ CA > OA > absence of organic acids. The inhibition is attributed to the blocking effect and formation of Si-organic acid complexes, as evidenced by breakthrough curves and density functional theory calculations. This study provides novel insights into the co-transport of CBCNPs with released PASi through mutual mechanisms, indicating both potential environmental benefits and risks.

The impact of chelating agent pH on the stability and viscosity of CO2 foam under harsh reservoir conditions

The injection of CO2 foam into the carbonate reservoir for enhanced oil recovery (EOR) has attracted special interest in the last decades; nevertheless, the understanding of the effect of liquid solution chemistry on foam stability at high temperatures and salinities is limited. Hence, this paper fully investigates the effect of chelating agents L-glutamic acid-N, N-diacetic acid (GLDA) pH, and hydrochloric acid (HCl) on the stability and viscosity of generated CO2 foam for heterogeneous carbonate formation under reservoir conditions. In this paper, Duomeen TTM and Armovis VES surfactants were utilized due to their capabilities to produce viscous CO2 foam under harsh conditions. The foamability, foam stability, and foam structure were studied at 100 °C and 1000 psi using a high-temperature and high-pressure (HPHT) foam analyzer. The measurement of CO2 foam viscosity was determined at 100 °C, 1000 psi, and 70 % foam quality using the HPHT foam rheometer. Rheology experiments and dynamic light scattering investigated the micelle’s size or aggregation behavior of surfactants. The obtained results showed that the Duomeen TTM generated unstable foam; however, foam stability and foamability improved with the decrease in GLDA pH. Armovis VES showed excellent CO2 foam performance, where the foam half-life time of Armovis VES systems was 240 min. The liquid drainage and bubble coarsening were delayed due to the formation of the viscoelastic liquid phase. The foamability of Armovis VES was improved as the GLDA pH decreased. Furthermore, the addition of HCl to Armovis VES solution presented the highest foamability. The outcomes of the HPHT foam analyzer and HPHT viscometer proved that as the pH of Armovis VES solution decreased, higher foamability was produced. The highest foam viscosity was obtained using the synergic effect of 0.5 wt% Duomeen TTM and 0.5 wt% Armovis VES (39 cp at 100/s). In comparison, 1 wt% Armovis VES presented the lowest foam viscosity (30 cp at 100/s). The outcomes of this research can provide insight into the effect of chemistry on CO2 foam and extend its application in oilfield development. This work broadens the design of novel CO2 foam formulation, leading to the improvement of sweep efficiency in CO2-EOR methods and enhance the gas trapping in carbon storage.

Influence of biodegradable plastics on the generation of disinfection byproducts in the chlorination process

Biodegradable plastics (BPs) have seen a continuous increase in annual production and application due to their environmentally sustainable characteristics. However, research on the formation of disinfection byproducts (DBPs) from biodegradable microplastics (BMPs) during chlorination is limited, and the effects of aqueous solution chemistry on this process have yet to be explored. Therefore, two biodegradable microplastics, polylactic acid (PLA) and polybutylene adipate terephthalate (PBAT), were investigated in this study to examine the changes in their physicochemical properties before and after chlorination, and the formation of DBPs under different environmental conditions. The results showed that PLA was more chlorine-responsive, and generated more DBPs. The pH converted some of the intermediates into more stable DBPs by affecting the concentration of HClO and base-catalyzed reactions, whereas ionic strength slightly reduced DBP concentration by ion adsorption and promoting the aggregation of BMPs. Finally, since PLA has a slightly greater volume of mesopores and micropores compared to PBAT, it may more effectively adsorb DBP precursors beyond natural organic matter (NOM), such as some anthropogenic pollutants, thus potentially decreasing the formation of chlorinated DBPs in surface water. This research explored the potentiality for DBP formation by BMPs under different water quality conditions during the disinfection process, which is useful for assessing the environmental hazards of BMPs.

Response of Ionic Hydration Structure and Selective Transport Behavior to Aqueous Solution Chemistry during Nanofiltration.

The effect of aqueous solution chemistry on the ionic hydration structure and its corresponding nanofiltration (NF) selectivity is a research gap concerning ion-selective transport. In this study, the hydration distribution of two typical monovalent anions (Cl- and NO3-) under different aqueous solution chemical conditions and the corresponding transmembrane selectivity during NF were investigated by using in situ liquid time-of-flight secondary ion mass spectrometry in combination with molecular dynamics simulations. We demonstrate the inextricable link between the ion hydration structure and the pore steric effect and further find that ionic transmembrane transport can be regulated by breaking the balance between the hydrogen bond network (i.e., water-water) and ion hydration (i.e., ion-water) interactions of hydrated ion. For strongly hydrated (H2O)nCl- with more intense ion-water interactions, a higher salt concentration and coexisting ion competition led to a larger hydrated size and, thus, a higher ion rejection by the NF membrane, whereas weakly hydrated (H2O)nNO3- takes the reverse under the same conditions. Stronger OH--anion hydration competition resulted in a smaller hydrated size of (H2O)nCl- and (H2O)nNO3-, showing a lower observed average hydration number at pH 10.5. This study deepens the long-overlooked understanding of NF separation mechanisms, concerning the hydration structure.

Heteroaggregation kinetics of oppositely charged nanoplastics in aquatic environments: Effects of particle ratio, solution chemistry, and interaction sequence

Interactions between positively charged amino-modified (APS) and negatively charged bare (BPS) polystyrene nanoplastics may cause heteroaggregation in aquatic environments. This study investigated the effects of particle concentration ratio, solution chemistry [electrolytes, pH, and natural organic matter (NOM)], and interaction sequence on their heteroaggregation kinetics. In the absence of electrolytes and NOM, the APS/BPS ratio for attaining maximum heteroaggregation rate (khetero) increased from APS/BPS= 3/7 to APS/BPS= 1/1 as pH increased from 4 to 10, indicating that electrostatic interactions dominated heteroaggregation. In the absence of NOM, khetero ranked APS/BPS= 2/3 > APS/BPS= 1/1 > APS/BPS= 3/2. Colloidal stability decreased linearly as pH increased from 4 to 8 at APS/BPS= 1/1, while diffusion-limited heteroaggregation persisted at pH 10. In NaCl solution, humic acid (HA) retarded heteroaggregation more effectively than sodium alginate (SA) via steric hindrance and weakening electrostatic interactions, following the modified Derjaguin-Landau-Verwey-Overbeek (MDLVO) theory. Compared with simultaneous interactions among APS, BPS, NaCl, and NOM, the NOM retardation effects on heteroaggregation weakened if delaying its interaction with others. In CaCl2 solution, the effects of NOM on heteroaggregation depended on counterbalance among charge screening, steric hindrance, and calcium bridging. These findings highlight the important role of heteroaggregation between oppositely charged nanoplastics on their fate and transport in aquatic environments.

Effects of solution chemistry on dielectric barrier atmospheric non-thermal plasma for operative degradation of antiretroviral drug nevirapine

The global prevalence of human immunodeficiency virus/acquired immunodeficiency syndrome (HIV/AIDS) has been an environmental menace. Tons of drug wastes from antiretroviral therapy are released into the environment annually. We, for the first time, employed the novel dielectric barrier atmospheric non-thermal plasma (DBANP) discharge, to mitigate the inadvertent pollution arising from the antiretroviral therapy. A 40-min treatment of nevirapine achieved >94 % (0.075 min−1) removal efficiency at discharge power of 63.5 W and plasma working gas of atmospheric air. Chemical probes confirmed •OH, ONOO− and eaq− as the dominant reactive species whilst further revealing the reaction acceleration role of NaNO3 and CCl4 which are known reaction terminators. The commonly coexisting inorganic anions potentiated nevirapine removal with over 98 % efficiency, achieving the highest rate constant of 0.148 min−1 in this study. Moreover, the initial solution pH (1.5–11.1) was no limiting factor either. The insensitivity of the DBANP discharge to actual water matrices was an eminent inference of its potential applicability in practical conditions. With reference to data obtained from the liquid chromatography-mass spectrometer analysis, nevirapine degradation pathway was proposed. A nucleophilic attack by ONOO− at the cyclopropyl group and •OH attack at the carbonyl carbon of the amide group, respectively, initiated nevirapine degradation process. It is anticipated that the findings herein, will provide new insights into antiretroviral drug waste management in environmental waters using the innovative and green non-thermal plasma process.

Effect of solution chemistry on the sedimentation, dissolution, and aggregation of the bimetallic Fe/Cu nanoparticles pre- and post-grafted with carboxymethyl cellulose

The suitability of iron-based nanomaterials or composites for in-situ remediation hinges on their physicochemical stability. Introducing surface modifications like metal doping or polymer grafting can regulate interparticle forces, influencing particle stability. Thus, probing how grafting methods (i.e., pre- or post-grafting) tune material properties controlling interparticle forces, comprehend the synergistic effect of metal doping and polymer grafting, and evaluate stability under varying geochemical conditions are the way forward in designing sustainable remediation strategies. To this end, time-dependent sedimentation, dissolution, and aggregation of four synthesized iron-based nanoparticles (bare iron (Fe), copper doped bimetallic iron/copper (Fe/Cu), pre- and post-grafted Fe/Cu with carboxymethyl cellulose (CMC) – CMCpre-Fe/Cu and CMCpost-Fe/Cu, respectively) were carried out as a function of solution chemistry (i.e., pH – 5 to 10, ionic strength, IS – 0 to 100 mM NaCl, initial particle concentration, C0–20 to 200 mg.L−1) mimicking geoenvironmental conditions. CMCpre-Fe/Cu exhibited markedly higher particle availability (> 91 %) against sedimentation than others (bare Fe/Cu (11.28 %) > bare Fe (7.33 %) > CMCpost-Fe/Cu (6.09 %)) – suggesting the pivotal role of grafting method on particle stability. XDLVO energy profiles revealed pre-grafting altered magnetic properties favoring surface charge-driven electrostatic repulsion over magnetic attraction, thereby limiting aggregation-induced particle settling. In contrast, superior magnetic force overrides the electrostatic behavior for bare and post-grafted particles. Unlike bare and post-grafted nanoparticles, CMCpre-Fe/Cu aggregate size correlated positively with [H+] and IS, consistent with their settling behavior. Rise in C0 showed a visible negative effect on particle aggregation and, thereby, sedimentation except for CMCpre-Fe/Cu by facilitating particle collision through Brownian movement. Both acidic pH and copper doping promoted nanoparticle dissolution, whereas pre-grafting can provide a plausible solution against nanoparticle toxicity and loss of reactivity due to ionic release. To recapitulate, these findings are imperative in building a sustainable framework for environmental remediation application.

Impact of Solution Chemistry on the Biotechnological Synthesis and Properties of Palladium Nanoparticles

The biosynthesis of palladium nanoparticles supported on microbial cells (bio-Pd) has attracted much recent interest, but the effect of solution chemistry on the process remains poorly understood. Biological buffers can be used to maintain physiological pH during the bioreduction of Pd(II) to Pd(0) by microbial cells, however, buffer components have the potential to complex Pd(II), and this may affect the subsequent microbe-metal interaction. In this study, a range of Pd(II) salts and biological buffers were selected to assess the impact of the solution chemistry on the rate of bioreduction of Pd(II) by Geobacter sulfurreducens, and the resulting biogenic palladium nanoparticles. The different buffer and Pd(II) combinations resulted in changes in the dominant Pd(II) species in solution, and this affected the amount of palladium recovered from solution by the microbial cells. The physical properties of the bio-Pd nanoparticles were altered under different solution chemistries; only slight variations were observed in the mean particle size (<6 nm), but significant variations in particle agglomeration, the extent of Pd(II) bioreduction and subsequent catalytic activity for the reduction of 4-nitrophenol (4-NP) were observed. The combination of sodium tetrachloropalladate and bicarbonate buffer resulted in bio-Pd with the smallest mean particle size, and the fastest initial rate of reaction for 4-NP reduction (0.33 min–1). Other solution chemistries appeared to damage the cells and result in bio-Pd with relatively poor catalytic performance. This work emphasises that future studies into bio-Pd synthesis should consider the importance of solution chemistry in controlling the speciation of Pd(II) and its impact on both the bioreduction process and the resulting properties of the nanoparticles produced, in order to maximise Pd(II) biorecovery and optimise catalytic properties.

Effects of Cr(VI) oxyanion, humic acid and solution chemistry on the aggregation and colloidal stability of green synthesized chlorapatite nanoparticles

Aggregation is a crucial process determining the fate, mobility and ecological risks of nanomaterials. Chlorapatite nanoparticles (nClAP) exhibit widely applications in environmental remediation and consequently will inevitably enter aquatic systems. However, the aggregation characteristics of nClAP are still mostly uncovered. This study investigated the aggregation kinetics and colloidal stability of nClAP as a function of pH, humic acid (HA), Cr(VI) oxyanions, monovalent and divalent electrolytes. Results showed that pH values from 5 to 9 had a notable impact on the aqueous behaviors of nClAP. The addition of HA made the zeta potential (ZP) of nClAP more negative and thus enhanced nClAP stability through electrostatic and steric effects. Similarly, the adsorption of Cr(VI) on the surface of nClAP created a physical barrier and negative charge, improving the stability of nClAP by inducing steric force. Lower ZP and hydrodynamic diameter (HDD) reflected that the enhanced stability of nClAP by HA was more significant than Cr(VI). In comparison, the presence of Ca2+ ions were more effective than monovalent Na + ions in promoting the aggregation of nClAP. The classical DLVO theory incorporating the steric repulsion were used to interpret the aggregation and dispersion of nClAP, making it was easier to overcome energy barriers and agglomerate. This study provides new mechanistic insights which could help better understand the effects of Cr(VI) oxyanions and HA on nClAP's colloidal stability.

Deposition behaviors of carboxyl-modified polystyrene nanoplastics with goethite in aquatic environment: Effects of solution chemistry and organic macromolecules

The ubiquitous nanoplastics (NPs) in the environment are emerging contaminants due to their risks to human health and ecosystems. The interaction between NPs and minerals determines the environmental and ecological risks of NPs. In this study, the deposition behaviors of carboxyl modified polystyrene nanoplastics (COOH-PSNPs) with goethite (α-FeOOH) were systematically investigated under various solution chemistry and organic macromolecules (OMs) conditions (i.e., pH, ionic type, humic acid (HA), sodium alginate (SA), and bovine serum albumin (BSA)). The study found that electrostatic interactions dominated the interaction between COOH-PSNPs and goethite. The deposition rates of COOH-PSNPs decreased with an increase in solution pH, due to the enhanced electrostatic repulsion by higher pH. Introducing cations or anions could compress the electrostatic double layers and compete for interaction sites on COOH-PSNPs and goethite, thereby reducing the deposition rates of COOH-PSNPs. The stabilization effects, which were positive with ions valence, followed the orders of NaCl ≈ KCl < CaCl2, NaNO3 ≈ NaCl < Na2SO4 < Na3PO4. Specific adsorption of SO42− or H2PO4− caused a potential reversal of goethite from positive to negative, leading to the electrostatic forces between COOH-PSNPs and goethite changed from attraction to repulsion, and thus significantly decreasing deposition of COOH-PSNPs. Organic macromolecules could markedly inhibit the deposition of COOH-PSNPs with goethite because of enhanced electrostatic repulsion, steric hindrance, and competition of surface binding sites. The ability for inhibiting the deposition of COOH-PSNPs followed the sequence of SA > HA > BSA, which was related to their structure (SA: linear, semi-flexible, HA: globular, semi-rigid, BSA: globular, with protein tertiary structure) and surface charge density (SA > HA > BSA). The results of this study highlight the complexity of the interactions between NPs and minerals under different environments and provide valuable insights in understanding transport mechanisms and environmental fate of nanoplastics in aquatic environments.

Adsorption and desorption of polychlorinated biphenyls on biochar colloids with different pyrolysis temperatures: the effect of solution chemistry.

Biochar releases colloidal particles into the environment during applications and aging which can become carriers of pollutants and influence on the environmental risk of pollutants due to the excellent adsorption and migration properties of biochar colloids (BCCs). The adsorption and desorption behaviors of BCCs can be different from their bulk ones due to the colloidal size, which merits specific studies. Herein, the adsorption and desorption of 2,4,4'-trichlorobiphenyl (PCB28) as a representative on BCCs released from bulk biochars prepared from bamboo chips at 300, 500, and 700C and the effects of solution properties were specifically investigated. Results show that the adsorption was dominated by pore filling and π-π interaction, and thus, BCCs prepared at higher temperature with greater pore volume and aromaticity had higher adsorption of PCB28. The saturation adsorption amounts of PCB28 on BCC300, BCC500, and BCC700 were 21.9, 40.3, and 62.4mg/g, respectively. It is noteworthy that PCB28 possessed a significant desorption hysteresis from BCCs, with the hysteresis index (Ce = 80μg/L) increased from 0.380 to 0.661 as the preparation temperature of BCCs rising from 300 to 700℃. High concentration of NaCl (100mmol/L) was unfavorable for the adsorption and desorption. The presence of humic acid or fulvic acid (FA), especially the smaller FA, could inhibit the adsorption and desorption of PCB28 on BCCs due to micropore blocking. In seawater, groundwater, surface water, and soil solution samples, the PCB28 adsorption of BCCs was inhibited to varying degrees in comparison with that in deionized water, and the desorption was noticeably inhibited in the groundwater sample. These findings provide valuable information for the understanding of interactions between BCCs and organic contaminants in natural waters and for the environmental application of biochars as well.

Co-transport and deposition of fluoride using rice husk-derived biochar in saturated porous media: Effect of solution chemistry and surface properties

Fluoride (F−) contamination in water is a global health concern, threatening the well-being of millions. This study investigated the role of ZnCl2/FeCl 3-rice husk-modified biochar (Zn-BC and Zn/Fe-BC) in treating F−-contaminated surface and groundwater under the influence of varying solution chemistry, co-existing ions, and biochar-amended through column transport experiments. Modified biochar showed maximum F− adsorption, 99.01% and 91.90% using Zn/Fe-BC and Zn-BC, respectively, than 85.87% using raw biochar (R-BC). Raw/modified biochars were characterized with FESEM-EDAX, FTIR, XRD, particle size, surface area, electro-kinetic potential, and point of zero charge analyses. Langmuir and pseudo-second-order kinetic could explain that F−-biochar interactions are dominated by chemisorption at ambient temperature while physisorption at higher temperatures. The influence of salt concentrations and co-occurring ions reduced F− sorption using Zn/Fe-BC. Increased salt strengths led to reduced electrophoretic mobility of biochar particles, i.e., biochar-biochar particles attract each other and increase the hydrodynamic diameter, which ultimately reduces the active sites on biochar for fluoride adsorption. Co-transport and deposition of biochar and F− in saturated porous media revealed lower mobility of biochar, and maximum F− adsorption was observed at 10 mM salt strength. Biochar transport is governed by electrostatic interactions, whereas F− transport mainly occurs through chemisorption. In rural areas, hand pumps are generally applied for drinking and cooking; thus, biochar-mediated sand columns can be utilized for defluoridation. Thus, Zn/Fe-BC can be utilized as a potential bio-adsorbent for F−-contaminated natural surface and groundwater with optimum preparation and treatment costs.

Efficient recovery of bisphenol A from aqueous solution using K2CO3 activated carbon derived from starch-based polyurethane.

Endocrine-disrupting compounds (EDCs) are increasingly polluting water, making it of practical value to develop novel desirable adsorbents for removing these pollutants from wastewater. Here, a simple cross-linking strategy combined with gentle chemical activation was demonstrated to prepare starch polyurethane-activated carbon (STPU-AC) for adsorbing BPA in water. The adsorbents were characterized by various techniques such as FTIR, XPS, Raman, BET, SEM, and zeta potential, and their adsorption properties were investigated comprehensively. Results show that STPU-AC possesses a large surface area (1862.55m2·g-1) and an abundance of functional groups, which exhibited superior adsorption capacity for BPA (543.4mg·g-1) and favorable regenerative abilities. The adsorption of BPA by STPU-AC follows a pseudo-second-order kinetic model and a Freundlich isotherm model. The effect of aqueous solution chemistry (pH and ionic strength) and the presence of other contaminants (phenol, heavy metals, and dyes) on BPA adsorption was also analyzed. Moreover, theoretical studies further demonstrate that hydroxyl oxygen and pyrrole nitrogen are the primary adsorption sites. We found that the efficient recovery of BPA was associated with pore filling, hydrogen-bonding interaction, hydrophobic effects, and π-π stacking. These findings demonstrate the promising practical application of STPU-AC and provide a basis for the rational design of starch-derived porous carbon.

Quantitative Assessment of Interfacial Interactions Governing Ultrafiltration Membrane Fouling by the Mixture of Silica Nanoparticles (SiO2 NPs) and Natural Organic Matter (NOM): Effects of Solution Chemistry

Mixtures of silica nanoparticles (SiO2 NPs) and natural organic matter (NOM) are ubiquitous in natural aquatic environments and pose risks to organisms. Ultrafiltration (UF) membranes can effectively remove SiO2 NP-NOM mixtures. However, the corresponding membrane fouling mechanisms, particularly under different solution conditions, have not yet been studied. In this work, the effect of solution chemistry on polyethersulfone (PES) UF membrane fouling caused by a SiO2 NP-NOM mixture was investigated at different pH levels, ionic strengths, and calcium concentrations. The corresponding membrane fouling mechanisms, i.e., Lifshitz-van der Waals (LW), electrostatic (EL), and acid-base (AB) interactions, were quantitatively evaluated using the extended Derjaguin-Landau-Verwey-Overbeek (xDLVO) theory. It was found that the extent of membrane fouling increased with decreasing pH, increasing ionic strength, and increasing calcium concentration. The attractive AB interaction between the clean/fouled membrane and foulant was the major fouling mechanism in both the initial adhesion and later cohesion stages, while the attractive LW and repulsive EL interactions were less important. The change of fouling potential with solution chemistry was negatively correlated with the calculated interaction energy, indicating that the UF membrane fouling behavior under different solution conditions can be effectively explained and predicted using the xDLVO theory.

Integrated effect of bulk cations on nano-confined reactivity of clay-intercalated subnanoscale zero-valent iron in water-tetrahydrofuran mixtures

Smectite clay-intercalated subnanoscale zero-valent iron (CSZVI) exhibits superior reactivity toward contaminants due to the small iron clusters (∼0.5 nm) under nano-confinement, which however is significantly influenced by the solution chemistry e.g., various cations, of polluted soil and water. This work was undertaken to elucidate the mechanisms of solution chemistry effects on dehalogenation ability of CSZVI in water-tetrahydrofuran solution using decabromodiphenyl ether as a model contaminant. By combined spectroscopic characterization and molecular dynamics simulation, it was revealed that bulk cations, i.e., Na+, K+, Mg2+ and Ca2+ collectively affected the interlayer distance, water content and Brønsted acidity of CSZVI and thus its degradation efficiency. Although causing inter-particle aggregation, Mg2+ induced optimal nano-confined interlayers at concentration of 20 mM, exhibiting a superior debromination efficiency with rate constant 9.84 times larger than that by the common nano-sized ZVI. Conversely, K+ rendered the interlayers less reactive, but protected CSZVI from corrosion loss with higher electron utilization efficiency, which was 1.7 times higher than CSZVI in presence of Mg2+. The findings provide new strategies to manipulate the reactivity of nano-confined CSZVI for effective wastewater and contaminated soil remediation.

The heteroaggregation behavior of nanoplastics on goethite: Effects of surface functionalization and solution chemistry

Nanoplastics have attracted extensive attention in recent years. However, little is known about the heteroaggregation behavior of nanoplastics on goethite (FeOOH), especially the contribution of surface functional groups. In this study, the heteroaggregation behavior between polystyrene nanoplastics (PSNPs) and FeOOH was systematically investigated under different reaction conditions. Moreover, the effect of different functional groups (-NH2, -COOH, and bare) of PSNPs and solution chemistry was evaluated. The results showed that PSNPs could heteroaggregate with FeOOH, and the heteroaggregation rate of PSNPs with surface functionalization was significantly faster. The removal of suspended PSNPs was enhanced with increasing NaCl or CaCl2 concentration. However, heteroaggregation was significantly inhibited with the increase of solution pH. The zeta potentials analysis, time-resolved dynamic light scattering (DLS) and heteroaggregation experiments suggested that the electrostatic force affected the heteroaggregation process significantly. Fourier transform infrared (FTIR) spectra proved that the adsorption affinity between PSNPs and FeOOH was stronger after surface functionalization, especially for CH, O-C=O, and -CH2- groups, indicating that chemical bonding also made a contribution during the heteroaggregation process. This work is expected to provide a theoretical basis for predicting the environmental behavior between PSNPs and FeOOH.

Effects of soil grain size and solution chemistry on the transport of biochar nanoparticles

Biochar nanoparticles (BC-NP) have attracted significant attention because of their unique environmental behavior, some of which could potentially limit large-scale field application of biochar. Accurate prediction of the fate and transportability of BC-NP in soil matrix is the key to evaluating their environmental influence. This study investigated the effects of soil grain size and environmentally relevant solution chemistry, such as ionic strength (cation concentration, 0.1 mM–50 mM; cation type, Na+, and Ca2+), and humic acid (HA; 0–10 mg/L), on the transport behavior of BC-NP via systematic column experiments. The transportability of BC-NP in the soil-packed column decreased with decreasing soil grain size and was inversely proportional to soil clay content. At low cation concentrations (0.1–1.0 mM), a considerable proportion of BC-NP (15.95%–67.17%) penetrated the soil columns. Compared with Na+, Ca2+ inhibited the transportability of BC-NP in the soil through a charge shielding effect. With increasing HA concentration, the transportability of BC-NP increased, likely due to an enhanced repulsion force between BC-NP and soil particles. However, at a high HA concentration (10 mg/L), Ca2+ bridging reduced the transportability of BC-NP in the soil. Breakthrough curves of BC-NP were explained by the two-site kinetic retention model. The antagonistic effects of ionic strength and HA indicated that the transport behavior of BC-NP in the soil was governed by competitive effects of some environmental factors, including soil grain size, environmental solution chemistry, and natural organic matter content.
