Phase Distribution of Gas–Liquid Slug–Annular Flow in Horizontal Parallel Micro-Channels

As a transitional flow pattern, slug–annular flow occurs over a wide range of operating conditions in micro-channels while its distribution in parallel micro-channels has not been well characterized. Herein, we conducted an experiment to study the phase distribution of slug–annular flow in parallel micro-channels. The test section consists of a header with a diameter of 0.48 mm and six branch channels with a diameter of 0.40 mm. Nitrogen and 0.03 wt% sodium dodecyl sulfate (SDS) solution were used as the test fluids. It was found that the phase distribution of the slug–annular flow was unstable and the duration of the varying process showed regularity with different inlet conditions. Increasing the liquid superficial velocity facilitated the liquid phase to flow into channels at the fore part of the header, while the channels at the rear part of the header were more supplied with liquid as the gas superficial velocity, volume fraction of gas, and volume flow rate increased. Furthermore, the results indicated that the channels located at the rear part of the header experienced a pronounced enhancement in the supply of both the liquid and gas phases, with the spacing between the branches increasing. A predictive correlation was formulated to ascertain the distribution of the liquid phase within slug–annular flow across parallel micro-channels.

Hydrophobins: multitask proteins

Hydrophobins are small amphiphilic extracellular proteins produced by filamentous fungi; they are surface-active proteins, and their functions are mainly related to their ability to self-assemble into amphipathic monolayers at hydrophobic–hydrophilic interfaces. Depending on their hydropathy patterns and purification requirements, they are classified into class I and class II; both present eight conserved cysteines throughout their sequence, forming four disulfide bridges, which generate four loops that give stability to the protein in its monomeric and folded forms. Class I hydrophobin loops are more extended than class II hydrophobin loops, resulting in differences in assembly on divergent surfaces, additionally accompanied by conformational changes in the protein structure. In the monomer hydrophobin glycosylated form, hydrophobins are rich in β-sheet structure, while being assembled at the water–air interface increases the content of the β-sheet in their structure and is at the interface with water, and a hydrophobic solid such as Teflon also induces the formation of an α-helix structure. The monolayers generated by class I are stable structures called fibrils or rodlets, and class II only produces aggregates. Class I presents a glycosylated chain in its sequence; this causes the formation of the α-helix structure, promoting ordered assemblies, which entails their stability and high insolubility. Fibrils could be dissociated with trifluoroacetic acid and formic acid, which unfolds the protein, while 60% ethanol and 2% sodium dodecyl sulfate solutions dissociate class II aggregates.

How triacylglycerol thermal history impacts film removal by surfactant solution

Hypothesis: The physical and mechanical properties of triacylglycerols (TAGs), or ‘fats’, depend on their composition and thermal history which, in turn, impact crystal structure and morphology. We examine whether thermal history can be mechanistically related to film removal by a surfactant solution.Experiments: Model TAG mixtures, comprising triolein:tripalmitin:tristearin 0.5:0.3:0.2, were subjected to a range of cooling profiles from the melt (0.5-80°C/min, Newtonian and annealed), and the resulting solid films characterised by microscopy, X-ray diffraction, infrared spectroscopy, and contact angle measurements. Film removal from a model glass substrate by an aqueous surfactant solution of sodium dodecylsulphate and dodecyldimethylamine oxide at room temperature fixed at 25°C was examined under quiescent flow conditions.Findings: Quantitative relations are established between TAG cooling profile, crystal structure and morphology, surface energy γSFE, and removal (or ‘cleaning’). In general, films cooled slowly from the melt yield heterogeneous morphologies with predominantly β1′ phase, higher polar γSFE, and faster removal timescales. By contrast, rapid cooling results in homogeneous films, rich in β2′ phase, low polar γSFE, and long removal times. Our results elucidate the non-trivial impact of TAG thermal history, connecting the multiscale semi-crystalline structure to surface energy, and eventually to film delamination by micellar solutions.

Wet SPF: A wet powder suspension for the detection of latent fingermarks on the sticky side of adhesive tape for use in Seychelles

WET UCIO is an inexpensive carbon-based powder suspension, reportedly as effective as commercially available formulations for latent fingermark detection on the sticky side of adhesive tapes. However, the surfactant solution used in WET UCIO is not readily accessible outside Europe, limiting its use in Seychelles or other non-European jurisdictions. In this study, the UCIO formulation was modified based on a ‘frugal forensic’ approach, by replacing the surfactant solution with an in-house sodium dodecyl sulfate solution prepared in 5 % aqueous ethanol. A comparative assessment against Wetwop™ using eight different pressure-sensitive adhesive tapes found that the modified formulation was at least as effective as commercial powder suspension. Modifying this technique under the frugal forensic framework has enhanced its accessibility to other jurisdictions and is recommended for validation in Seychelles.

Decontamination of Salmonella Enteritidis on Eggshell: Assessment of Efficiency of a Bacteriophage and Levulinic Acid-Sodium Dodecyl Sulfate

The majority of food infections caused by consumption of egg and egg products are caused by Salmonella enterica subspecies enterica serovar Enteritidis. In this study, the inhibitory effect against S. Enteritidis was determined by dipping the eggshell into Salmonella-specific bacteriophage SE-P47 and levulinic acid (LVA) plus sodium dodecyl sulfate (SDS) solutions (0.5% LVA+0.05% SDS, 1% LVA+0.05% SDS and 2% LVA+0.5% SDS) separately for 10 minutes. The treatments of phage and 2% LVA+0.5% SDS reduced S. Enteritidis below the detectable level on eggshell (at 2.76, 3.22, 4.48 and 5.30 log CFU/cm2 inoculum levels). After the treatment of 1% LVA+0.05% SDS, 1.94 and 0.89 log reductions were obtained at 4.48 and 5.30 log CFU/cm2 inoculum levels, respectively, while S. Enteritidis decreased below the detectable number at 2.76, 3.22 log CFU/cm2 inoculum levels. Although the lowest antibacterial activity was observed in the treatment of 0.5% LVA+%0.05 SDS, the decrease in the number of S. Enteritidis detected in all samples except 5.30 log CFU/cm2 inoculum level was found to be significant compared to the control sample. The results indicated that the combination of LVA and SDS, and especially SE-P47 phage alone had good potential efficacy for Salmonella decontamination on eggshell.

Ionic liquid as a cosurfactant for critical heat flux enhancement during boiling with aqueous surfactant solutions

Surfactants are often used to improve boiling heat transfer due to the ease of their implementation. While aqueous surfactant solution significantly increases the heat transfer coefficient (HTC), it is known to deteriorate the critical heat flux (CHF) relative to the base fluid water. The high foamability of most surfactant solutions causes vapor crowding on the heater surface, making surface modification techniques ineffective for CHF enhancement. Here, we address the issue of relative degradation of CHF due to surfactant by using an ionic liquid as a cosurfactant. We employ a unique boiling fluid, where 1-ethyl-3-methylimidazolium chloride ([C2mim][Cl]), a low-foaming ionic liquid, is introduced as a co-surfactant in aqueous sodium dodecyl sulfate (SDS) solution. Motivated by the synergistic increase in foamability of the aqueous surfactant solution due to the addition of ionic liquid, we examine the boiling performance at various combinations of concentrations of the two additives in the solution. The mixture consistently exhibits higher CHF and HTC than an SDS only solution, with the best enhancement observed for a mixture of ≈ 30 ppm SDS and ≈ 750 ppm [C2mim][Cl], resulting in ≈1.6× and ≈1.5× enhancements in CHF and HTC, respectively, compared to the SDS only solution (≈ 30 ppm). We next fine-tune the concentration of cosurfactant to demonstrate an exceptionally high HTC of ≈93 kW/(m2 – ℃) with a CHF value comparable to that of pure water. Enhanced foamability and in-situ improvement in the wettability of the heater surface enhance the HTC and the CHF, respectively. This facile technique for enhancing HTC with water as the base fluid, without compromising on CHF, holds promise for high heat flux thermal management applications.

The precise measurements of petrol interfacial tension (IFT) in the presence of Sodium dodecyl sulphate (SDS) at room temperature by Mansingh Survismeter are reported. The concentration of sodium dodecyl sulphate was varied from above and below the critical micelle concentration (CMC) to cover the minimum and maximum concentrations of the investigated surfactant. Petrol was taken from the dealer in Nepal and used without purification. Therefore, when surfactant is added to the system, the surfactant decreases its free energy, thus decreasing its surface tension

Regulation of droplet dynamic behavior after droplet impact on superhydrophobic surfaces

Controlling the impact behavior of a droplet on a superhydrophobic surface is a significant challenge for many applications. Instead of texturing the surface, this study investigated the effect of adding surfactants on the morphology of the droplet after it impacts superhydrophobic surfaces. The results showed that adding low concentrations of sodium dodecyl sulfate (SDS) surfactant prevents fragmentation and splashing. High concentrations of SDS can inhibit rebound and allow droplets to be easily deposited on surfaces after impact. When the droplet size was 3.51 mm and the SDS concentration was above the critical micelle concentration, the contact time of the solution increased by a maximum of 1.30 times compared to that of pure water. In a high-concentration SDS solution, the surfactant molecules can quickly migrate to the newly generated interface during the spreading stage, reducing the interfacial tension and causing wetting changes. The results of this study are expected to contribute toward establishing a simple method to inhibit splashing and increasing contact time on superhydrophobic surfaces.

Enhanced methane hydrate formation using a newly synthesized biosurfactant: Application to solidified gas storage

Surfactants are considered the most influential promoters for accelerating the formation of gas hydrates in gas storage applications. However, their promotion mechanism remains unclear, and the formation of foam during the hydrate dissociation step severely limits hydrate-based gas storage technology. Oleic acid was used as a renewable biomass source in this study to develop a novel biosurfactant capable of enhancing methane hydrate formation. Oleic acid-based promoter (OAP) significantly improved kinetics of methane hydrate formation, and enhanced growth of hydrate crystals. A maximum conversion of 81 % and storage capacity of ∼151 v/v were achieved in a solution containing 1000 ppm OAP at 9 MPa. Additionally, OAP showed good promotion activity at a lower driving force (7 MPa), resulting in conversion and storage capacity 4.2 times greater than pure water. Moreover, molecular dynamics simulations revealed that the primary mechanism action of OAP is to increase the solubility of methane in an aqueous solution by forming promoter micelles. A gas release simulation for sodium dodecyl sulfate (SDS) solution generated significant foam, whereas no foam formed when OAP was present. The obtained findings are useful for developing efficient biosurfactants based on vegetable oils and can shed light on the promotion mechanism of promoters.

Experimental investigation on bubble dynamic behaviors in pool boiling of surfactant solutions

In this study, pool boiling experiments on copper surfaces with different roughness levels (Ra = 0.61 μm and Ra = 0.15 μm) using sodium dodecyl sulfate (SDS) solutions at various concentrations (0.1 CMC, 1 CMC, 5 CMC, and 10 CMC) are investigated. Our study focuses on the impact of SDS concentration, wall superheat, surface roughness, and bubble behavior on boiling heat transfer. The results show that an increase in SDS concentration could improve the heat transfer. However, when the SDS concentration reaches 10 CMC, there is a deterioration in heat transfer. Additionally, rough surfaces show better heat transfer performance compared to smooth surfaces. The presence of surfactant not only promotes bubble nucleation but also reduces the bubble departure diameter and inhibits bubble coalescence. Multiple bubbles are formed from the same nucleation site in surfactant solutions with high concentrations (5 CMC, 10 CMC). Various bubble dynamic parameters, including instantaneous size, departure diameter, growth time, waiting time, and departure frequency are obtained and compared with existing empirical correlations in the literature. It is found that the bubble growth in both deionized water (DI water) and surfactant solutions is mainly influenced by the near-wall thermal conditions, aligning with the thermal diffusion mechanism. In addition, the bubble departure diameters in both DI water and surfactant solutions gradually increase with increasing Jakob number (Ja). The growth time and waiting time in the surfactant solution both decrease with increasing Ja number, leading to a significant rise in the departure frequency. In contrast, the bubble growth time in DI water increased and the waiting time decreased with increasing Ja number, resulting in a relatively stable departure frequency. A new empirical formula is proposed for fDd0.5 based on the surface tension coefficient, surface roughness, and Ja number, which demonstrates good rationality.

Counter-Ion Effect on the Surface Potential of Foam Films and Foams Stabilized by 0.5 mmol/L Sodium Dodecyl Sulfate

It is well known that the type of counter-ion affects the state of the adsorption layer of ionic surfactants and, consequently, its surface potential. Yet, it is not clear how they affect the foamability, the rate of foam decay or foam production. How is the surface potential of the air/water interface related to the properties of the foam? This work aims to answer these questions. Foam films, stabilized by 0.5 mmol/L sodium dodecyl sulfate (SDS) in the presence of added LiCl, NaCl, and KCl, were studied by means of the interferometric experimental setup of Scheludko–Exerowa. The surface potential values were derived from the equilibrium film thickness by means of the DLVO theory. A linear relation between the values of the surface potential and specific adsorption energy of the counter-ions on the air/water interface was established. The slope of this linear relation depends on the salt concentration. The foamability, the rate of foam decay, and the foam production of the same aqueous solutions of SDS and added salts were studied by means of the shaking method. A correlation was found between the derived surface potential of the foam film’s surfaces and the properties of the foam. The foam production, which is the ratio between the initial foam volume and the rate of foam decay, increases with the decrease in the surface potential. Previous studies in the literature confirm that the lower surface potential promotes higher surfactant adsorption, thus boosting more foam and vice versa. It was also confirmed that the dual effect of KCl on foam production involves converting the best foam stabilizer into a foam suppressor at the highest salt concentration.

Construction of cholesteric liquid crystal microlens array at air/CLC/air and water/CLC/air interfaces

This study addressed the limitations of cholesteric liquid crystal (CLC) based microlens arrays, which required submersion of the CLC in water for their formation. We successfully constructed microlens arrays at both the air/CLC/air and water/CLC/air interfaces by doping E7, a nematic host, with a strong chiral dopant, (S)− 1-Phenylethane-1, 2-diyl bis(4-(trans-4-pentyl cyclohexyl) benzoate) (S1011) at different concentrations (0.3, 0.5, and 1 wt%). By spreading the mixture on transmission electron microscopy square-geometry grids, we observed that the lenses thickened at the water/CLC/air interface and thinned at the air/CLC/air interface with increasing dopant concentrations. A non-inverted image on the same side as the object was analyzed, created from the inverted virtual image of the object on the opposite side of the lens. The non-inverted image's focal length ranged from 6–6.24 mm for air/CLC/air and 4.8–3.6 mm for water/CLC/air, corresponding at 0.3, 0.5, and 1 wt% of S1011. Furthermore, the effect of interfacial tension on focal length was also observed by replacing water with sodium dodecyl sulfate (SDS) solution, and it was found that the focal length increased by 60 µm with increasing SDS from 0.1 to 1 mM. These findings suggest that the S1011 doped E7 microlens array can be easily constructed and potentially used in optical technologies.

Wetting-and scaling-resistant superhydrophobic hollow fiber membrane with hierarchical surface structure for membrane distillation

In this study, we address the challenge of wetting and scaling in membrane distillation (MD) by developing a robust superhydrophobic poly(vinylidene fluoride) (PVDF) hollow fiber membrane. To achieve this, we utilized co-extrusion technology and subsequent fluorination treatment to create micro-nanoscale surfaces. The fabrication process involved extruding a SiO2 suspension onto the outermost layer of a triple-orifice spinneret to create a hierarchical structure, followed by 1H,1H,2H,2H-perfluorooctyltrichlorosilane (FAS) modification to lower the membrane surface energy. This resulted in a highly water-repellant membrane, as evidenced by contact angle measurements of 153°, 147°, and 141° for water, sodium dodecyl sulfate (SDS) solution (0.4 mM), and saline SDS solution (0.4 Mm SDS and 35 wt% NaCl), respectively, indicating increased resistance to liquid penetration. Through direct contact membrane distillation (DCMD) experiments, we demonstrated that the PVDF/FAS membrane exhibited excellent wetting resistance to seawater (3.5 wt% of NaCl) with SDS at varying concentrations. Furthermore, the membrane effectively hindered the CaSO4 scaling by reducing both heterogeneous nucleation and the tendency of bulk crystal deposition on the membrane outer surface. Overall, the developed approach for fabrication of superhydrophobic PVDF hollow fiber membrane presents a promising solution for facile and scalable manufacturing of anti-wetting and anti-scaling MD membranes. This advancement has significant implications for enhancing the practical application of MD technology.

Kinetics of Structural Transitions Induced by Sodium Dodecyl Sulfate in α-Chymotrypsin.

The temporal changes in circular dichroism at 222 and 260 nm were recorded by using stopped-flow spectroscopy after mixing α-chymotrypsin solutions with sodium dodecyl sulfate solutions. Simultaneously with the circular dichroism signal, the fluorescence emission was recorded. Changes in the secondary and tertiary structures of chymotrypsin induced by sodium dodecyl sulfate are characterized by either three or four one-way reactions with relaxation amplitudes and times precisely determined by an advanced numerical procedure of Kuzmič. Quantitatively, transitions within the secondary and tertiary structures of the protein are significantly different. Moreover, changes in the tertiary structure depend on the type of recorded signal (either circular dichroism or fluorescence) and the wavelength of the incident radiation. The latter observation is particularly interesting as it indicates that the contributions of protein's different tryptophans to the total recorded fluorescence depend on the excitation wavelength. We present several results justifying this hypothesis.

On-line concentration and separation of multiple derivatized monosaccharides from edible fruit with cyclodextrin-encapsulated sweeping by micellar electrokinetic chromatography

An on-line enrichment and separation of multiple derivatized monosaccharides with cyclodextrin-encapsulated sweeping (CDES) by micellar electrokinetic chromatography (MEKC) was presented. Five monosaccharides (L-(−)-Mannose, D-(+)-Glucose, D-(−)-Ribose, D-(+)-Xylose, and L-(+)-Rhamnose) were derivatized with 1-phenyl-3-methyl-5-pyrazolone, subsequently concentrated and separated by MEKC. The optimized conditions were as follows: 50 mM phosphoric acid (PA), 100 mM sodium dodecyl sulfate (SDS), and 30 % (v/v) methanol in background solution; 140 s injection of sample solution containing 50 mM CD and 100 mM PA, followed by 90 s injection of 40 mM SDS solution. Under the optimized conditions, the correlation coefficients ≥ 0.9953, and the limits of detection ranged from 4.2 to 7.4 ng/mL. Relative standard deviation values ranged from 0.24–4.23 %, and sensitivity enrichment factors were in the range of 53–82 compared with typical injection (50 mbar, 3 s). The CDES-MEKC method was successfully applied to Jujube with good recoveries of 84.22–104.33 %. The method provides new ideas for the on-line enrichment and detection of trace monosaccharides and even other target analytes in foods with complex matrices.

Diameter-Dependent Competitive Adsorption of Sodium Dodecyl Sulfate and Single-Stranded DNA on Carbon Nanotubes.

The equilibrium compositions of coatings on single-wall carbon nanotubes were spectroscopically deduced for samples dispersed in dilute sodium dodecyl sulfate (SDS) and then exposed to low concentrations of ssDNA oligomers. With all studied oligomers, displacement of the SDS tended to occur at lower ssDNA concentrations for smaller diameter nanotubes than for larger diameter ones. However, the behavior varied significantly with oligomer. For example, the diameter dependence was steeper for (TAT)4 than for (ATT)4, suggesting that interstrand head-to-tail hydrogen bonding interactions play a role in SWCNT wrapping. Concentrations of ssDNA in the range of several μg/mL displace SDS from nanotubes dispersed in 1500 μg/mL SDS solutions. This effect allows the use of coating exchange to prepare ssDNA dispersions with minimal oligomer costs. Another demonstrated use exploits the structure-dependent relative coating affinities in a simple filtration method for the diameter enrichment of SWCNT mixtures.

Ecofriendly single-step HPLC and TLC methods for concurrent analysis of ternary antifungal mixture in their pharmaceutical products

Two accurate, sensitive, and selective methods for simultaneous determination of miconazole nitrate (MIC), nystatin (NYS), and metronidazole (MET) in pure state or drug product were established and verified. First, RP-HPLC-DAD was designed. Separation was accomplished using a ZOBRAX Eclipse Plus RP-C8 column that was running under an isocratic elution of methanol: 0.05% aqueous solution of sodium dodecyl sulphate (40: 60 v/v), with a flow rate that was regulated at 0.8 mL/min. The column temperature was adjusted at 25 °C and diode array detector was monitored at 220 nm. The linearity range of the proposed method was achieved at the concentration of 5–50, 4–50, and 4–40 µg/mL and the attained retention time for the studied drugs was 2.52, 3.52 and 4.99 min for MIC, NYS, and MET, correspondingly. Second, a TLC-densitometric approach was used to resolve the three compounds. Resolution of the three cited drugs was carried out using TLC aluminum plates pre-coated with 0.25 mm silica gel 60 F254. A developing solvent comprised ethyl acetate: toluene: methanol: triethyl amine: formic acid (3: 1: 7: 0.3: 0.1 by volume) (pH = 5.5) was utilized and scanning of the resolved bands at 215 nm. Linearity of the developed TLC method was evaluated and evident to be 0.4–2, 0.4–2.2, and 0.4–2 μg/band for MIC, NYS, and MET, in that order. The suggested chromatographic methods were verified according to ICH directives. The findings of the developed chromatographic procedures were statistically compared with the results of the reported ones using student’s t-test and F-test. Furthermore, two green assessment tools evaluated the indicated methods' level of greenness (GAPI and AGREE).

Impact of interfacial tension on oil-water flow in a narrow gap

Numerous researchers have examined the co-current flow of oil-water and aqueous solutions containing polymers and surfactants in thin gaps for oil recovery. While some have focused on charges and forces at the interfaces of oil-surfactant solutions during flow. The study of flow structures, interface behavior, and relative permeabilities of oil and aqueous phases of surfactant flow through thin gaps has been less explored. For the first time, this research aims to comprehensively investigate the flow of oil-water and oil-surfactant solutions through a thin gap (Hele-Shaw cell) with a particular focus on the impact of sodium dodecyl sulfate (SDS). The experiments reveal that SDS forms an emulsion near the oil-water interface, capturing oil droplets and enabling their flow along with the SDS solution. Microscopic studies confirm this, showing that when SDS contacts oil, it creates channels through the oil phase, leading to the accumulation and division of oil into small round-shaped droplets, resulting in an oil-in-water emulsion. The addition of SDS to the injecting water significantly enhances relative permeabilities, leading to a remarkable 90% increase in oil recovery from the cell. The research suggests that the optimal SDS concentration range for maximum oil recovery is between 1.5 and 2 wt%, as it achieves the minimum interfacial tension between oil and water.

Emergent properties of magnetic ions and nanoparticles in micellar solutions of surfactants: Use in fine technologies

Objectives. To establish expected emergent (unexpected) properties of magnetic materials when obtained in aqueous micellar solutions of surfactants (aqueous quantum materials), and their use in fine technologies.Methods. Chemical synthesis of magnetic nanoparticles in aqueous micellar solutions of surfactants of various nature. Characterization of magnetic solutions and nanoparticles by magnetic measurements, spectroscopy, diffractometry, small-angle X-ray diffraction, scanning probe microscopy, and others.Results. The term “water quantum material” refers to materials (micellar solutions) whose properties are mainly determined by the nuclear quantum effect on macroscopic scales (emergent property). Micellar solutions exhibit phenomena and functionality not always consistent with the classical theory of micellization. The article presents in detail the experimental results that suggest the manifestation of the emergent properties of magnetic materials obtained in aqueous micellar solutions of surfactants. In particular, Gd3+ ions in an aqueous micellar solution of sodium dodecyl sulfate exhibit paramagnetic properties, possibly indicating their random arrangement in solution contrary to the classical theory of micellization with an ordered adsorption layer on micelles. Hybrid Pt–Gd nanoparticles are formed in a quantum material with cetylpyridinium chloride as a matrix, although Gd3+ ions must be repelled by CP+ ions on micelles. Nanosized powders of cobalt ferrite and nickel ferrite obtained in a micellar solution of sodium dodecyl sulfate have superparamagnetic properties, although the presence of their precursor ions in the adsorption layer in classical micelles should lead to ferromagnetic properties.Conclusions. The synthesis of nanoparticles in a quantum material opens up the possibility of reducing ions of different signs in one stage during the processing of metallurgy waste, in order to obtain nanoparticles of various metals and their composites. Magnetic nanoparticles obtained in a quantum surfactant material self-assemble on various substrates, enabling the creation of materials whose residual magnetization and coercive field can be controlled at room temperatures.

Development of Methods to Obtain Grafts for the Anterior Abdominal Wall in Surgical Treatment of External Abdominal Hernias

INTRODUCTION: Currently, tissue engineering is one of the most promising fields of medicine dealing with search for solutions to the problems of creation of biocompatible structures capable of partial or complete replacement of organs or tissues of an organism. An advanced method of tissue engineering implies using an extracellular matrix (ECM) cleared from the cellular material. The main problem of obtaining an ECM consists in the difficulty of selecting a suitable decellularization method and exposure time.
 AIM: Development of a method for obtaining grafts for the anterior abdominal wall (AAW) and evaluation of the histological properties of the ECM to determine the optimal protocol for donor tissue decellularization providing a complete removal of cellular material without any significant damage to the scaffold.
 MATERIALS AND METHODS: The experiments were conducted on 10 White Flemish Giant male rabbits. All the animals were withdrawn from the experiment, after which, on autopsy, AAW grafts were obtained for evaluation of the decellularization properties of three detergents (alkaline solutions): 2% SDS (sodium dodecyl sulfate) solution, 2% CHAPS (zwitterionic surfactant, 3-[(3-cholamidopropyl)-dimethylammonio]-2-hydroxy-1-propansulfonate) solution, and 1% Triton-X 100 solution. The decellularization quality was controlled in histological examination.
 RESULTS: Morphological evaluation of tissue samples revealed that after decellularization of the material with 2% SDS solution and 2% CHAPS solution, the number of cells remaining in the preparations was comparable and significantly less (Me = 10 in a microscope field) than after treatment with 1% Triton-X 100 solution (Me = 45 in a microscope field). However, decellularization with 2% CHAPS solution led to fiber ruptures and tissue edema manifested by an increase in the distance between the fibers (Me = 163 µm).
 CONCLUSIONS: Decellularization of the anterior abdominal wall tissues with 2% SDS solution provides a sufficient cell elimination while preserving the fiber integrity and ECM structure. 2% CHAPS solution was comparable to 2% SDS solution in terms of the quality of cell elements removal, but its more aggressive effect on collagen fibers was noted (their multiple ruptures and a more pronounced edema). 1% Triton-X 100 solution appeared to be of low efficiency in elimination of cellular material, although it had a minimal effect on the integrity of ECM network.
