Unnatural Resources: Energy and Environmental Politics in Appalachia after the 1973 Oil Embargo

Marine plastic pollution in kindergarten as a means of engaging toddlers with STEM education and educational robotics

In recent years, education has increasingly focused on children's acquisition of digital skills and abilities, which leads to the need to create new educational methodologies capable of engaging students in computational thinking activities. The research interest of this paper focuses on how preschool children can be more involved in STEM and educational robotics through authentically experiential learning on the topic of marine plastic pollution. It examines toddler engagement through an integrated STEM scenario using the programmable robot Bee-Bot and encourages children to solve problems in many possible ways, assessing the strengthening of their necessary skills. The teaching intervention took place during the 2021-22 school year in a Kindergarten in the city of Ioannina. During the planning and implementation phase of the program, action research and field study are applied, while the sociocultural approach to teaching natural sciences, educational robotics, new technologies, engineering, the arts and mathematics. The research framework is completed with the evaluation process and the students disseminating the project learning outcomes.

Listening at Night

Drawing on ethnographic research with undergraduate students on their listening and sleeping practices, this essay develops a concept of “so(m)niferous media” to describe how listeners/sleepers use audio media to (re)mediate their experience of the night. The essay outlines key theoretical and practical affinities between sleeping and listening, taking a sociocultural approach to sleep informed by critical work in sound and media studies. Sleeping is reconceived as a sonically mediated, non-conscious experience of listening that participates ambivalently in the 24/7 logic of commodification outlined by Jonathan Crary and others. One unexpected finding of the ethnographic work is that many sleepers deliberately avoid obvious sound media products for sleeping (e.g., sleep playlists and podcasts, noise machines, “nature” sounds, binaural beats, etc) and seek out attention-grabbing social media content instead. Rather than lull themselves to sleep, listeners seem to want to engage their attention fully, while paradoxically shutting it down at the same time. So(m)niferous media thus seem to work directly on the attention of the listener, not the acoustic ambience of the sleeping space.

Strategies for creating new businesses, a sociocultural and institutional approach

This paper aims to summarize the main theories from socio-cultural or institutional approach to encourage the creation of new businesses. Given this context, it raised the importance of theoretical study of the factors that influence decision making in the development of new businesses and how it affects the environment in which they operate the same business. The research method used is to review the existing literature by analyzing the major theories involved in the creation of companies emphasizing the socio-cultural approach. The analysis concludes the activity of entrepreneurship to encouraging the creation of companies, being an important factor in economic development.

Critical discourse analysis of BBC and CNN political news’ headlines on the Christchurch Mosque Massacre in New Zealand

Abstract This study aims at investigating the language of politics in news headlines regarding the Christchurch massacre in New Zealand from a Critical Discourse Analysis perspective to examine how power and ideology reside in texts. The data of this study consist of 39 headlines extracted from the BBC and CNN online news agencies. The data were analyzed utilizing the socio-cultural approach of Fairclough (2013). Representative examples were discussed in terms of the three stages of Fairclough’s approach. The results of the study revealed that the reporters tended to use the passive voice structure in headlines that describe the attacker in conformance with the New Zealand policy, which states that his identity should not be revealed. However, they used the active voice structure while referring to the victims, their families, and the New Zealanders at large in order to emphasize their way of dealing with the attack. In addition, the role of Prime Minister Jacinda Ardern in her legal capacity was highlighted by shedding light on her pronouncements to fight against terrorism. It was also found that the use of the metaphor as a figurative device entails that terrorism is a rare phenomenon in New Zealand.

Immersion in a foreign environment as an effective way of development of communicative competence in the process of learning foreign languages

The article considers the characteristics and analysis of the influence of a foreign language environment on a person in the process of learning foreign languages. The relevance of this research is connected to the fact that in recent years immersion in a foreign language environment has become increasingly popular all over the world due to the development of information and communication technologies. The article highlighted such concepts as "immersion in a foreign language environment", "sociocultural approach", "psychological aspects", "sociocultural adaptation", "language barrier", and also considered the effectiveness of immersion in a foreign language environment as a way of developing communicative competence. This article highlights the results of interviewing participants who at different time intervals and under different circumstances were in a foreign language environment and they had to answer ten questions regarding their experience, inner experiences and psychological difficulties that they encountered being in a foreign language environment. The respondents shared their impressions and expressed their view on the effectiveness of immersion in a foreign language environment as a way of developing communicative competence. Based on the results of the interviewing, the authors of the research highlighted important points that should be paid attention to and analyzed in detail.

The Naqsabandiyah Order is not just a ritual teaching, it focuses on the human spiritual approach to God Almighty. The implementation of remembrance is part of the method of approaching Allah SWT. The formulation of the problem in this study is 1. The role of remembrance and prayer for mental health in the Naqsyabandiyah Order located in Sei Pasir Village, Sei Kepayang Timur District, Asahan Regency 2) How are the practices of the Naqsabandiyah Order in the Naqsyabandiyah Order located in Sei Pasir Village, Subdistrict Sei Kepayang Timur, Asahan Regency 3) How is the influence of the teachings of the Naqsabandiyah Order in Sei Pasir Village, Sei Kepayang Timur District, Asahan Regency on the surrounding community? This study aims to determine the form of the role of remembrance and prayer on mental health in the Naqsyabandiyah Al Kholidiyah Order in Sei Pasir Village, Sei Kepayang Timur District, Asahan Regency. This type of research is a qualitative field research. This research is pursued by the steps of collecting, classifying and analyzing or processing data, making conclusions and reports with the main aim of making an overview of a situation objectively from a description. The approach according to the researcher according to the theme of this research is the sociocultural approach. Zikir in the Naqsyabandiyah Order in Sei Pasir Village, Sei Kepayang Timur District, Asahan Regency, from remembrance of ismu substance, remembrance of lathaif and with practices such as repentance, talqin allegiance, and remembrance. The results of the study illustrate that people who follow the teachings of Tariqah Naqsabandiyah in their lives are calmer, more open to the way, the problems they face are felt with a well-controlled mind. The daily life of the tariqah congregation is more confident in the destiny of life from Allah SWT, more istiqomah in living life, in society the congregation has more high social awareness, and upholds the dignity of fellow living creatures as Allah's creation. in Sei Pasir Village, Sei Kepayang Timur District, Asahan Regency, more giving social roles in social life to people who follow tariqah. Because he can be trusted in carrying out his mandate as a leader and prioritizes the public interest.</p>

Молодежные общественные объединения в сфере национальной политики: оценки ростовской молодежи

Introduction. This study is devoted to learning of the opinions of regional youth about the activities of youth public associations in the field of national policy. Methodology. Theoretical and methodological basis of the research is the synthesis of neo-institutional, structural-functional and socio-cultural approaches. 523 respondents took part in the empirical study in October-November 2021 in the Rostov region. Results and its discussion. The authors come to the conclusion about positive perception of young people about the role of such civic actors, along with contradictory estimates of their activities from the point of view of social and personal effectiveness. There is a discrepancy between the needs and interests of young people to the actions and events held by youth organizations. Raising awareness of youth organizations in the field of national policy through blogs and social networks, taking into account the identified contradictions and inconsistencies can form the basis for recommendations to improve the quality of state national policy in the Rostov region.

The Image of the Yellow (Huang He) River in Chinese Painting

The article is devoted to the creative works of artists who have created pictures of life of the people living along the Yellow (Huang He) River in all nine regions of China. The Huang He River, as the main artery of the country, has long been the subject of study by historians, writers and painters. However, contemporary artists who dedicated their works to the river have not been researched. This work examines the collective image of the Huang He River in the works of Chinese artists from the 1980s to the present day in order to get acquainted with its peculiarities. The methodological basis for the study of contemporary art is the historical and cultural and socio-cultural approaches. The methods of historical-comparative and sociological analysis of art, biographical and iconographic analysis, semiotics and hermeneutics methods are used. For the first time the features of oil painting in different regions along the Huang He River are presented: the geomorphological characteristics, national characters and folk customs in the river basin, and the cultural protection function of painting. The names of a number of Chinese artists have been introduced into Russian art history, and the panorama of the development of painting in the works of Chinese masters painting on the Huang He River has been shown. The works of these artists are correlated with the traditional art and religious ideas of the people living along the Huang He River: the role of created paintings in preserving the cultural code of the inhabitants through the portrayal of national costume, folk and religious holidays is traced. The results can serve as a basis for historical and comparative studies of the artworks of Chinese masters and become the basis for courses on the history of Chinese art.

Социокультурные основания акта потребления как целереализации эмоционального опыта в повседневных практиках взаимодействия с городским пространством

The COVID-19 pandemic refreshes the view of urban spaces as objects of consumption. The article describes the constituent elements of urban space and the process of human interaction with it, mediated by sign-symbolic perception. The socio-philosophical analysis of the phenomenon of consumption as a phenomenon developing within the framework of understanding the praxeological relationship of human to world is presented. The study contains a synthesis of several modern concepts based on a sociocultural approach. Based on the concept of A. Warde, the author proposes that consumption be seen as a process that is a moment in the many practices of everyday life which is characterized by evaluation, use and appropriation. The act of consumption is viewed as an internally-oriented, goal-rational human behavior aimed at achieving emotional experiences, as a part of the self-determination of the individual (G. Schulze). The conceptual link explaining the articulation between emotion and consumption is to be found in the notion of “imagination”, understood, following E. Illouz, as the socially situated deployment of cultural fantasies. In everyday practices of the development of urban spaces by man, a combination of creation and use is found, which seems to be possible to conceptualize through the moment of appropriation, in the course of the act of consumption, considered as secondary production (M. de Certeau). Changes in everyday practices and human attitudes towards urban spaces during the COVID-19 pandemic are analyzed based on domestic and foreign research. The possibility of consolidating new forms of everyday practices is comprehended. Strengthening of a person's intrasubjective orientation is stated.

Everyday life information means while reflecting in the individual consciousness on postmodern reality background

The purpose of the article is a detailed analysis of information means of reflecting objective reality,in an individual consciousness in a postmodern society. The methodology is based on the use of activity,systemic, socio-cultural approaches, as well as methods of comparative and terminological analysis. Thescientific novelty of work is that the means of reflecting everyday reality in the individual consciousness areinvestigated. Mechanisms of influence of information technologies of mass communication on social identity,lifestyle, and culture, in general, are analyzed. It has been proved that social and cultural phenomena such aspost-folklore, ritualization, mythology, enigmatic narratives play an important role in the process of awarenessof objective reality. It is justified that the consciousness of the individual is in a total space created by masscommunication, and therefore the perception of everyday reality occurs under the influence of informationtechnologies. A significant role in modern society is played by the processes of demassification of everydaylife, which generate pluralism and a variety of thoughts; entertainment and humor are the main factors inthe manipulation of individual and social consciousness. Conclusions. Postmodern reality determines theemergence and development of such phenomena of everyday life, which turn into an important means ofinfluencing the social, and especially the individual consciousness. Everyday life through means of masscommunication is reflected as an image of reality in the individual’s brain, is realized and reproduced as asubjective reality. Scientific exploration in this area will always be relevant since everyday life in modernpostmodern society is an important specific source of society development, the meeting space of philosophy,psychology, social communications, and culture. In our further research, we plan to study in more detail theimpact of post-folklore on the consciousness of the individual in postmodern reality.Keywords: subjective reality, everyday life, enigmatic narratives, mythologization, ritualization, postfolklore, postmodernism, demassification.

Specific study of biblical parables in a pedagogical university

The author of the article focuses on the analysis of specific methods and techniques for identifying the universal and unique cultural meanings of biblical parables in the study of the disciplines of the humanities cycle in a pedagogical university. The purpose of the article is to develop techniques for working with parables for practical classes in the cultural cycle at the Pedagogical University. Research methodology and methods. The work is based on the use of the methodology of the sociocultural and activity-based approach to the psychological development of the individual, as well as systemic and holistic approaches to education. When decoding the meanings of parables as texts of culture, it is proposed to use axiological, semiotic, cognitive and systemic approaches. The systemic culturological approach allows you to create conditions for the development of aesthetic taste, artistic thinking. Research results. As the scientific literature and the practice of teaching culturological disciplines at the Pedagogical University show, working with parables teaches us to personally and emotionally perceive the text of culture, to adequately assess the relationship in the system man-man and man-world, to recode the content from one semiotic system to another. Through the interpretation of the text, the individual creative abilities of students are developed, a steady interest in modern art practices is formed. Interpretation of the categories of culture, embodied in human and natural images of the transcendental, time, space, make it possible to essentially comprehend the texts of culture containing the plots of biblical parables. Conclusion. The consistent identification of the specifics of the study of parables in the context of the spiritual quest of a certain historical period contributes to the emergence of interest and the formation of a respectful attitude towards the cultural heritage, the values of world culture. Cultural practices of working with cultural texts contribute to an adequate understanding of the place of national culture in the world artistic process and its creative enhancement.

Invariant Component of Development of Targeted Programs for Formation of Russian Identity n Educational Organizations

The article presents the author’s theoretical justification for the need to develop targeted programs for the formation of Russian identity in educational organizations. At the same time, taking as a given the multicultural nature of Russian society, the author seeks to determine the invariant part of such programs. The purpose of the article is to determine the invariant component of the development of targeted programs for the formation of Russian identity in educational organizations. The methodology was compiled by sociocultural and systemic approaches to the analysis of pedagogical phenomena and based on the main non-pedagogical concepts of the identity of foreign and domestic researchers. The leading methods were analyze, generalization, interpretation of the results of philosophical, sociological, psychological and pedagogical research, mass and author pedagogical practice, modeling individual positions of the concept of the pedagogical process of forming the Russian personality identity. Attention is drawn to the fact that modern pedagogy (if it wants to be modern) is fundamentally important to determine the set of pedagogically significant ha-racterists of Russian identity, which will allow you to design the pedagogical process of its formation and indicate pedagogical permissible means and possible risks of its scientific and methodological support. The interdependence and mutual influence of the processes of development (main) and formation (accompanying) leads to objective limitations of pedagogical interventions. In order to improve the professional detail of pedagogical teams within the framework of the formation of the Russian identity of students, the structure of the modular program for the formation of Russian identity in educational organizations is proposed for discussion.

“Radical Reorganization…”: M. I. Pyrohov as Trustee (1858–1861) and Measures in Improving Professionalism of Teachers of Kyiv Educational District

Reformation of the educational system of independent Ukraine encourages the study of concrete experience of implementing radical changes in the field of education. The purpose of the article is to study the innovations of the trustee of the Kyiv Educational District M. I. Pyrohov in teacher training in the state. The methodological basis of the study is the socio-cultural approach in combination with psychohistory. As a result of the study it is proved that the authoritative doctor and scientist M. I. Pyrohov in Kyiv Educational District continued the mission of “serving the truth and the Motherland”. Progressive pedagogy, sincere humanism and democracy in the educational process became the core of the trustee’s administrative activity. The personality of a teacher was in the focus of change. The trustee implemented measures to improve the professionalism of the teaching staff in the District: projects of the Pedagogical Seminary and a special Pedagogical Gymnasium were prepared; training of university students in didactics was improved and their practical classes were organized on the basis of the Kyiv gymnasiums; the concept of pedagogical courses at provincial gymnasiums for training of teachers of the county and parish schools was offered; competitive procedure for appointing teachers; educational and methodical meetings of pedagogical councils were initiated. The strategy of innovations was to increase the pedagogical authority and personal dignity of teachers.We believe that under Pyrohov as the trustee there was an irreversible turn towards true democratization of the management system, relations between the subjects of the educational process, modernization of didactic and pedagogical technologies in the Kyiv Educational District. The success of innovations was due to the high public authority of Pirogov, his exceptional professionalism and integrity as an administrator, a sincere desire for the progress of education in the state.

DA'WAH OF BANYUMAS ISLAMIC CHINESE ETHNICITY IN THE DEVELOPMENT OF RELIGIOUS MODERATION

This research focuses on the ethnic-based da'wah model of the Chinese Muslim community who is members of the Indonesian Chinese Islamic Association (PITI) Banyumas in promoting religious moderation. The Banyumas Chinese Muslim community chooses the middle path and contributes to religious moderation through various da'wah activities. This research method uses documentation, interviews, and observations. The results of this study describe an ethnic-based da'wah model through structural and cultural da'wah movements. The da'wah developed promotes a moderate attitude with a socio-economic and socio-cultural approach. Ethnic Chinese who have recently embraced Islam (mualaf) receive training in economic empowerment. The Chinese Muslim community also embodies tolerance in an open attitude towards non-Muslim Chinese ethnicities and various other religious groups. An example of public openness is their acceptance of the Cap Go Meh culture and the lion dance tradition. A moderate attitude is shown by neutrality that is not extreme right and extreme left on the choice of religious schools of thought. PITI places people in the center of society's varieties. Da'wah facilities employ the mosque as a venue for preaching and religious education based on social interaction. Chinese Muslims' preaching through an open, reasonable, and community engagement has been well received by the general public.

Affective learning as a higher psychological process: a microgenetic analysis of evaluative conditioning from a sociocultural approach (Aprendizaje afectivo como proceso psicológico superior: análisis microgenético del condicionamiento evaluativo desde un enfoque sociocultural)

ABSTRACT The hypothesis that affective learning is mediated by social devices was applied to experimental research conducted in evaluative conditioning, which refers to the affective learning of pleasant and unpleasant outcomes by an association of stimuli. Although it is believed that this association is partly an effect of the experimental procedure, the implications of this have not been explored. Could affective learning be understood to be a socially mediated process that requires a specific setting? This explanation is discussed from Lev Vygotsky’s sociocultural approach and the concept of device, emphasizing both the subject’s and the context’s active way of becoming in the acquisition of tastes. We also carried out a microgenetic analysis of the experiments described in two articles that are representative of this paradigm to show that evaluative conditioning is the product of a learning device that is part of the social history of the subject’s psychological processes.

Analysing Self-Regulation in Academic Writing: A Study of Select Essay Writers

A sociocultural approach to understanding how social environment and social interaction are connected to writing regulation has been more important in writing research over the past several decades. Self-regulation in three successful Bachelor essay writers in literature is examined via a participatory appropriation theory lens, and how contact with supervisors helped them acquire writing regulation in ways appropriate to their academic backgrounds. With the help of Pintrich's self-regulation framework, we conducted three in-depth qualitative interviews with participants at three different stages throughout the research. Using data from this study on students' self-regulation of writing and social interactions, such as their conversations with their supervisors, researchers were able to see whether there was any overlap between the two. In light of our results, we may infer that supervisors acted as socializers, helping students adopt disciplinary-relevant ways of thinking and behaving while also encouraging students' motivation and re-conceptualizing the writing process. This study, seen as a whole, answers to requests for research into the social framework in which self-regulation is rooted.

КРЫМСКАЯ МОЛОДЕЖЬ В УСЛОВИЯХ ПЕРВОЙ ВОЛНЫ РАСПРОСТРАНЕНИЯ COVID-19: ЗДОРОВЬЕСБЕРЕГАЮЩИЕ СТРАТЕГИИ

Objective of the study is to identify the nature of the strategies for preserving the health of Crimean youth and the peculiarities of self-regulation of health-preserving behavior in the conditions of the first wave of the spread of COVID-19.   The methodological basis of the research is the sociocultural approach to the study of social self-regulation. It allows to substantiate the motivation of one or another type of behavior of young people in various conditions and spheres of life.   Research results. The study included three indicators – attitude to health, attitude to coronavirus infection, forms of self-regulation. According to the first indicator, three strategies for saving health are derived: maximum health anxiety, median health anxiety, indifference to health. The distribution of responses showed the priority importance of the first strategy for the majority, the second was slightly less relevant and the third was insignificant. The established hierarchy was formed due to the threats of coronavirus infection. This assumption was confirmed by the procedure of combining strategies of attitude to health and the perception of threats from COVID-19 as personally significant and real. The result of this relationship was the readiness of the Crimean youth to voluntarily and consciously accept two forms of self-regulation: self-isolation and social distancing.   Prospects of the study: in the future, we plan to investigate the forms of self-organization of young people who have already had COVID-19.

ТРЕНДЫ ЦИВИЛИЗАЦИОННОГО РАЗВИТИЯ: УРБАНИЗАЦИЯ/ ДЕУРБАНИЗАЦИЯ (ЭКОЛОГИЧЕСКИЙ АСПЕКТ)

Objective of the study is to examine the specifics of the processes of urbanization and deurbanization, which reflect the dynamics of relations in the man-nature system.   The methodological basis of the research is the sociocultural approach to urbanization, which provides the basis for understanding the evolution of the urban form of social life and its cultural characteristics; modern concepts of urbanization, which analyze trends in the development of urbanistic civilization and its destructive impact on the natural environment; the provisions of the theory of the noosphere, modeling the conditions for the further development of mankind and revealing the ontological causes of the modern ecological crisis.   Research results. This article analyzes the specificity of the processes of urbanization and deubranization, which reflect the dynamics of relations in the man-nature system during the development of civilization. The model of the relationship between man and nature in the course of the development of urban civilization is determined by the value-worldview attitudes that dominate in different historical periods. The modern urbanization process has a multi-vector nature, and is manifested both in megalopolization and deurbanization, which, due to their specificity, have a destructive effect on the ecology of the urban environment.   Prospects of the study. The problem of urbanization / deurbanization as trends in civilizational development is of scientific and practical interest in connection with the need to address issues of environmental safety of society. In this regard, further research on this topic is associated with the search for ways to minimize the negative impact of urban civilization on the environment.  

New Trends in the Field of Public Memory

The article analyzes the forms of public memory in the field of historical, cultural and scientific heritage on the example of commemorative practices in the Novosibirsk Scientific Center of the Siberian Branch of the Russian Academy of Sciences. The source basis was the historiographic and information resource of publications about the SB RAS, the materials of the electronic open archive of the SB RAS, the results of the method of included observation. The methodological basis is the socio-cultural approach, the provisions on T. Shola’s mnemosophy. We consider the resonant commemorative events of 2020–2021 dedicated to the leaders of the Siberian Branch M. A. Lavrentiev, N. N. Yanenko, N. N. Pokrovsky, T. I. Zaslavskaya, doctor of philology M. I. Cheremisina, the builder of the Akademgorodok of the Novosibirsk Scientific Center general N. M. Ivanov. Conclusions are drawn that the sphere of public memory is an important component of the socio-cultural framework of the territory of the “scientific topos”. Novosibirsk Akademgorodok is a complex innovative form of public memory that configures the socio-cultural environment for the tasks of commemoration. The calendar-anniversary principle of commemoration of memorable dates is complemented by the logic of spiritual attachment to the heritage of significant personalities. The line between institutional and private initiatives and partnerships is being blurred. There is a further rethinking of the contribution and significance of the leaders of science. In various forms of public memory, social orientation, social activism, and moral agentivity are noted. The practical value of generalizing and algorithmizing the experience of commemoration is due to the importance of the socio-cultural function of the sphere of public memory in creating a semantic space of social myth-making, which significantly affects the life of society, the accumulation of historiographic and information resources for the successful implementation of national projects related to the modernization of science and education in the face of great challenges of modernity.
