The level of adoption of various biotic stress management practices by sugarcane growers in Surajpur district of Chhattisgarh

The present study has been conducted on the level of adoption of various biotic stress management practices by sugarcane growers in Surajpur district of Chhattisgarh. 15 villages were selected randomly for the study in Surajpur district of Chhattisgarh. The Socio-personal characteristics of the respondents indicated that the majority (67.50%) belongs to middle aged group (36 to 55 years). With reference to source of information, about 97.50 per cent of the farmers had received the information from progressive farmers while 92.5 per cent received from radio. The study also revealed that more than half of the respondents were having medium economic motivation and adopted flatbed sowing method of sugarcane due to its simple and time saving quality. 69.93% farmers were found to be growing CO-62175 sugarcane variety with 68.34 per cent farmer in study area had medium level of farming experience i.e., 5-10 years.

A Descriptive Study to Assess Relationship between Body Fat Percentage and Obesity at a Tertiary Level Health Facility

Introduction: The prevalence of obesity is increasing in Indian adults at alarming rate and causing high burden of chronic diseases due to relatively high Body Fat Percentage (BFP) compared to other ethnic groups. There is a dearth of studies on assessment of obesity by using BFP measurement. This study was undertaken to strengththe reliability of BFP in assessment of obesity. Objectives: To find out the relationship between body fat percentage and obesity among adults aged 18-59 years. Method: A total of 228 subjects were included in the study from the in-patients admitted to tertiary care hospitalby systematic random sampling method. In the interview, socio-personal characteristics were collected using pre-tested, semi-structured questionnaire. Anthropometric measurements were conducted to calculate BMI based on Asia-Pacific classification and waist circumference based on International Diabetes Federation guidelines along with body fat percentage was measured using standard guidelines. The t- test, ANOVA and correlation was used to determine the relationship between obesity and BFP. Results: A significant association between Body Fat Percentage (BFP) and obesity measured by Body Mass Index (BMI) and Waist Circumference (WC) was observed across the categories and sex. Positive correlation was observed between BMI and waist circumference (p<0.001), BMI and body fat percentage (P<0.001) and waist circumference and body fat percentage (P<0.001). Conclusions: The study shown significant association and positive correlation between body fat percentage and obesity measured by BMI and waist circumference at lower cut-off among Indian adults indicating BFP is a reliable measure for assessment of obesity.

Gender Differences in Meta-Cognitive Skillfulness among Adolescents of Moga and Ludhiana

The present study was conducted in urban and rural areas of Moga and Ludhiana district of Punjab in order to investigate the gender wise differences related to meta cognitive awareness among adolescents. A self-designed personal information sheet was used to document the socio-personal characteristics of the selected subjects for the study. Meta cognitive Awareness Inventory (MAI) developed by Schraw and Dennison (1994) was used to investigate various aspects of meta cognition indepth and to obtain scores for individual components/sub-components of meta cognition The results indicated that significantly more number of females were found at high level of ‘declarative knowledge’ as well as ‘evaluation’ sub-components of meta cognition. Significant gender-wise differences were observed in the mean scores of meta cognition as females scored better than male respondents. Further, across two components and eight sub-components and of meta cognition females exhibited better knowledge in both the components of meta cognition as well as ‘declarative knowledge’, information management strategies’, and ‘debugging strategies’ sub-components of meta cognition.

This study ascertained cassava farmers’ attitude towards participation in Root and Tuber Expansion Programme (RTEP) in Delta State, Nigeria. Multistage sampling procedure was used to select 120 respondents from the 3 Agricultural Development Programmes (ADPs) zones in the study area. The study was conducted from June to November 2018. Data on respondents’ socio-personal characteristics, income earned from cassava production and attitude towards participation in RTEP were generated using structured interview schedule. Frequency count, percentage, mean, Chi-square, Pearson Product Moment Correlation (PPMC) and multiple regressions were used to analysed data at p ≤ 0.05. The mean age, years of formal education and household size were 46 years, 9 years and 6 persons, respectively. Majority (85.8%) of the respondents were married with formal education (73.3%) and using family labour (37.5%). Most (60.0%) of respondents were cosmopolitan with more than once a week visit to urban centres, while 79.2% earned an average annual income of N234,641.67 from cassava production. A little above average (51.7%) had unfavourable attitude towards participation in RTEP. Age (β=-0.08), household size (β= 0.37) and income earned from cassava production (β= 5.47) were significant contributors to attitude towards participation in RTEP. This study concluded that the attitude of cassava farmers towards participation in RTEP in Delta State is marginally unfavourable and determined by age, household size and income. Therefore, it is recommended that government, development organisations and other stakeholders implementing the RTEP should organize intervention to increase income earned from cassava production, this will enhance favourable attitude towards towards RTEP.

Extent of opportunities in rice cultivation practices at Lohit District of Arunachal Pradesh

A Study was conducted in Sunpura block, Lohit district of Arunachal Pradesh with objective of studying the relationship between the selected socio-personal characteristics and extent of opportunities during rice cultivation by the rice growers with sample size of 150 respondents.The extent of opportunities in rice cultivation is any kind of benefit or facility provided to rice growers directly or indirectly by Government or Non-Governmental Organization but not the benefits from natural sources. The study revealed that 60 per cent of rice growers were fall under the medium category, 22 per cent low and 18 per cent high category, which implies that the average rice growers agree on availability of opportunities of rice cultivation. The possible reason might be that majority of farmers can read and write so they get information on new technology through mass media and also because of their high social participation. Further, Stepwise Regression analysis showed that all the selected independent variables put together explained about 54.20 percent of variation in extent of opportunities during rice cultivation among the rice growers coming from the variables like mass media exposure, sources of information and attitude towards pesticide used, were positively and significantly associated with extent of opportunities among the rice growers of Lohit district of Arunachal Pradesh.

A study of entrepreneurial competencies of post graduate students in agriculture

Entrepreneurial competence being underlying characteristic of a person leads to effective or superior performance in a job. The study explored the level of entrepreneurial competence and its relationship with socio-personal characteristics of Post-Graduate students of Anand Agricultural University (Gujarat). The 150 postgraduate students were selected on proportionate random sampling basis. To measure entrepreneurship competency level, the indicators advocated by Entrepreneurship Development Institute of India were used. The study revealed that majority (92.00%) of the postgraduate students possessed moderate level of entrepreneurial competency. Among different component traits of entrepreneurial competency, information seeking behaviour, concern for high quality work and efficiency orientation were important. Socio-personal characters like knowledge of different languages, fathers' education and risk orientation had positive impact and academic performance and agricultural business anxiety had negative impact on possession of entrepreneurial competency.

Assessment of load factors affecting women farmers in maize production operations

Women in agriculture play a vital role in wide range of activities, thereby contributing to sustainable agricultural development. To achieve inclusive agricultural growth, empowering women by having comprehensive understanding about work participation, gender issues, drudgery and health and nutritional status is necessary. The study was conducted in tribal development block of Udaipur district namely Kherwara. Data were collected from 60 tribal farm families by a pre-designed interview schedule. Different socio-personal characteristics revealed that all of the tribal women were in 20 to 50 years age group, belonged to nuclear and not heading the family, illiterate and engaged in all type of agricultural activities and rearing small hesrd of livestock. Based on the study it was seen that there were six load factors which affected women’s work efficiency in maize production operation. The data explained that average MSD Load factor was highest (3.37/5) followed by Repetitive Strain Load (3.04/5), Physical Load (2.70/5), Time Load (2.18/5), Posture Load (1.92/5) and Physiological Load (1.80/5).

Study of socio-personal determiants and level of loneliness of undergraduate students in Ludhiana district

The present study was conducted on undergraduate students of Punjab Agricultural University, Ludhiana. Total sample comprised of 400 students studying in four different colleges. General information sheet was used to procure the necessary information on socio-personal characteristics of the respondents. Perceived loneliness scale developed by Jha (1971) was used to assess the perceived loneliness of students. Results indicated that students of less educated parents perceived more loneliness followed by parents who were educated upto graduation level. In all colleges majority of the respondents’ mothers were homemakers and majority of fathers were engaged in government services. In all colleges majority of students were belonged to nuclear families except in College of Agricultural Engineering and Technology and majority of students were from moderate size of families. Students studying in College of Agricultural Engineering and Technology perceived less loneliness as compared to other colleges. In rest of the three colleges, College of Home Science perceived more loneliness followed by students in College of Basic Sciences and Humanities and College of Agriculture. Gender-based perceived loneliness among respondents results concluded that in all colleges majority of male respondents perceived less level of loneliness as compared to females, except in COAE and T where both male and female respondents perceived less level of loneliness.

ABSTRACTThe present study with the primary objective to ascertain socio-personal, economic, communication and psychological characteristics of the farmers who have been practicing resource conservation technologies in rice cultivation was carried out in the Imphal West district of Manipur state in India. A total of 120 rice growers were selected as respondents through proportionate random sampling from 10 selected villages of the district. Data collection from the selected respondents was made with the help of pre-tested structured schedule through personal interview method. The study shows that out of 120 respondents, the majority was of middle age with medium education level and high social participation in case of their personal characteristics. Knowledge of Expectant Fathers on Childbirth Care

The knowledge of expectant fathers is vital to ensure that healthcare is sought early to prevent any complications related to pregnancy and childbirth. It is essential for the health care agencies to be aware of the existing knowledge of men on childbirth care so that educational sessions can be arranged to enhance it. The objective of the study was to assess the knowledge of expectant fathers on childbirth care and to associate it with selected socio-personal variables. A cross sectional descriptive study was carried out among husbands of pregnant women attending the maternity outpatients’ clinics. The results showed that knowledge of expectant fathers is poor on childbirth care and it is associated with age, education, occupation, monthly income, religion, attendance at childbirth classes and source of information on child birth classes. These findings are useful for healthcare agencies in tailoring childbirth preparation classes for expectant couples with diverse socio-personal characteristics.

Agriculture awareness among rural school going adoloescents as per their socio-personal determinants

Agriculture has always been a significant factor in the sustainability and development of human society. Unfortunately, the important role of agriculture as a foundation for a secure and durable civilization is not always apparent to those outside of agriculture. The present research was framed to study socio-personal characteristics and gender difference in awareness regarding agriculture among rural school going adolescents and to study the correlation of socio-personal characteristics and gender differences in awareness regarding agriculture among rural school going adolescents. A sample comprised of 120 rural school- going adolescents was purposively selected from two villages of Ludhiana district. Socio-economic status scale (AICRP) has been used to measure the socio-economic status of the respondent. Self- structured questionnaire was used to gather information regarding awareness level with respect to agriculture. Results revealed that awareness level of adolescent girls about agriculture was comparatively higher than their counterparts. Correlation analysis also found that there is no significant relationship in respondents' socio-economic characteristics and their awareness level regarding agriculture.

HYGIENIC ASSESSMENT OF RISK FACTORS FOR HIV-INFECTION AND NARCOMANIA PREVALENCE AMONG MEDICAL STUDENTS

Aim. The aim of the study was to carry out the hygienic assessment of risk factors for HIV-infection and narcomania prevalence among medical students. Materials and methods. Questionnaire was used to interrogate 2645 students of medical university, 1-6-year students. Socio-personal characteristics of students, level of knowledge on the problems of narcomania and HIV-infection, students’ opinion on the reasons of drug use and ways of reducing narcomania and HIV-infection threat, peculiarities of sexual behavior were studied. Subjective opinion of students on narcomania, spreading among them, was received. Results. It was established that risk factors for HIV-infection and narcomania among medical students are the following: not full family, passive leisure, low internal locus of control. The level of students’ awareness on narcomania and HIV-infection can be estimated as fragmental and insufficient. There is a relatively high level of stigma and discrimination in students’ attitude to HIV-infected persons. Conclusions. The main way for reducing the threat of narcomania and HIV-infection, singled out by students, is decrease in a risky behavior including sexual one. Students’ subjective opinion showed that there are subjects using drugs among them. It is necessary to introduce advanced technologies for preventive work both at the universities and students youth organizations.

Subject Matter Specialists and Organizational Effectiveness of Krishi Vigyan Kendras of Tamil Nadu and Kerala

The study was undertaken with the objective of determining the socio-personal characteristics of Subject Matter Specialists (SMS) of Krishi Vigyan Kendra (KVK) and their relationship with organizational effectiveness. Altogether 65 SMS’ from 12 KVKs across Tamil Nadu and Kerala were selected. The study has concluded that most of respondents were middle aged with more than half of them being female. Majority of them was married, had work experience of below five years and had attended three to five trainings. Most of the respondents had high level of job satisfaction team-work and one-fourth felt a medium to high job stress. More than half of the respondents felt medium level of work load. There was a positive and significant correlation at one per cent level between job satisfaction / team work and organizational effectiveness of KVKs whereas job stress had a negative and significant correlation at five per cent level. Hence it may be concluded that team work, job satisfaction and job stress play a significant role in improving the organizational effectiveness of KVK. More emphasis must be given for team building enhance the job satisfaction level and reduce the job stress among Subject Matter Specialists of KVKs.

Student Engagement in the School: Interpersonal and Inter-Center Differences

This research project aims to identify differences in students’ engagement in school life, in terms of both socio-personal characteristics (sex and educational stage) and type of school (state, private with some state funding and cooperative). Participants were 1229 students aged between 9 and 17 (598 from a worker cooperative and 631 from state and private stated-funded schools of the Basque Country and Catalonia). Three components were distinguished in engagement (emotional, behavioural and cognitive) as measured by a Spanish version of the Leadership, Organisational Learning and Student Outcomes (LOLSO) questionnaire by Mulford, Silins and Leithwood (2004). These data are related to the responses given to the Psychological Sense of School Membership (PSSM) questionnaire by Goodenow (1993), which examines factors affecting school engagement, with specific focus on students’ sense of belonging. The results indicate that girls’ engagement is higher than that of boys; that it decreases as students move up the school; and is higher in the worker cooperative than in the state or private stated-funded schools. Engagement was also found to be related to teachers’ work and the relationship between teachers and students.

Participation of farm women involved in chilli cultivation

Women comprise about 43 per cent of the global agricultural labour force. Their participation in agriculture and rural economies, vary considerably between and within regions. Even within regions their participation varies based on land holding status of farm/household and the crop cultivated by them. The present investigation was undertaken to study the socio-personal characteristics and participation level of women involved in chilli cultivation. This study was conducted in Kundgol taluk of Dharwad district in Karnataka purposively as it is the highest chilli growing area. Five villages were selected randomly and from each village 30 farm women were selected making a sample of 150. Personal interview method was used to collect the data and suitable statistical tools were used for analyzing the data. The study revealed that majority if the respondents were growing ByadagiKaddi variety of chilli. The respondents were mainly between the ages of 36-50 with low level of education. They were from joint and medium sized families. Their average land holding was less than five acres with an annual family income of less than Rs. 1,32,000. The extension participation was low while social participation was high.The participation index for pre sowing and sowing operations was 62.69, for inter culture operations it was 61.63 and for harvesting and post harvesting operation it was 72.49. The overall index was 65.88 meaning that nearly 66 per cent of all activities are carried out by women, it being higher in post-harvest activities than other activities. A high participation implies that there is increasing feminization of agriculture. The programmes and policies of government often biased in favour of men should target farm women.

Yak rearing systems among the Brokpas of the Eastern Himalaya in Arunachal Pradesh

The study was carried out to understand the transhumance system of yak rearing in West Kameng and Tawang districts of Arunachal Pradesh through the interview of 80 yak pastoralists. Majority (78.75%) of the Brokpas, practiced concentrate feeding to their yak herds. Cent%of yak herdsmen practiced natural services and transhumance system of rearing management. Majority (88.75%) of yak herdsmen reported disease animal being treated by para vets. Majority (97.75%) of yak herdsmen move with family during the time of migration. Majority (77.50%) of the respondents stated hostile weather and environment as a major constraint during migration. Socio personal, economic and communicational characteristics viz. age, family size, annual income, mass media exposure etc had positive and significant relationship with the rearing practices of the Monpa pastoralist.
