Influence of oxygen inhibition on the surface free energy and enamel bond strength of self-etch adhesives

We compared the surface free energies and enamel bond strengths of single-step self-etch adhesives with and without an oxygen-inhibited layer. The adhesives were applied to the enamel surfaces of bovine incisors, light irradiated, and the oxygen-inhibited layer was either retained or removed with ethanol. The surface free energies and their components (γ(S)(LW), γ(S)(+), and γ(S)(-)) were determined by measuring the contact angles of three test liquids placed on the cured adhesives. The enamel bond strengths of specimens with and without the oxygen-inhibited layer were measured. For all surfaces, the value of the estimated surface tension component γ(S)(LW) was relatively constant. The value of the γ(S)(+) component increased slightly when the oxygen-inhibited layer was removed, whereas that of the γ(S)(-) component decreased significantly. The enamel bond strengths of the self-etch adhesives were significantly lower in the specimens without an oxygen-inhibited layer. The oxygen-inhibited layer therefore appeared to promote higher enamel bond strength.

Effect of warm air-drying on dentin bond strength of single-step self-etch adhesives

The effect of warm air-drying on the dentin bond strengths of the single-step self-etch adhesives was determined. The adhesives were applied to bovine dentin followed by drying in a stream of warm air for 5, 10, and 15 s at 37°C. Resin composites were condensed into a mold and polymerized. Specimens were stored in distilled water at 37°C for 24 h, then shear tested. The surface free-energies were determined by measuring the contact angles of three test liquids placed on the cured adhesives. The dentin bond strengths varied according to the air-drying time. The value of the acid component increased slightly when drying was performed with a stream of warm air, whereas that of the base component decreased significantly. These data suggested that warm air-drying was essential to obtain adequate bond strengths, although increasing the drying time did not significantly influence the bond strength.

Long-Term Nanoleakage Depth and Pattern of Cervical Restorations Bonded With Different Adhesives

This study investigated the effect of water storage on nanoleakage depth and the pattern of cervical cavities bonded with different adhesives. For nanoleakage depth evaluation, standardized cervical cavities (2 mm in diameter) were prepared on the buccal and lingual surfaces of 36 intact human premolars. Specimens were divided into three groups (n=12) according to the three adhesive systems used: an etch-and-rinse adhesive (SBMP, Adper Scotchbond Multi-Purpose, 3M ESPE) and two single-step self-etch adhesives; one was mild and acetone based (IB-iBond, Kulzer), while the other was strong water based (PL, Adper Prompt L-Pop, 3M ESPE). All cavities were restored using Filtek Z250 (3M ESPE) resin composite. For each adhesive, specimens (n=12 with 24 restored cavities) were subdivided into three subgroups (n=4 with eight cavities) according to the storage period before examination (24 hours, three or six months). Another duplicate of teeth was prepared in the same way for nanoleakage pattern evaluation. After storage, the specimens were placed in 50%W/V silver nitrate solution for 24 hours and immersed in a photo-developing solution for eight hours. Thereafter, the specimens were sectioned buccolingually, polished, and examined by scanning electron microscopy. For nanoleakage pattern, specimens were treated in the same way as for nanoleakage depth except that they were additionally immersed in 10% EDTA for five seconds after polishing. Silver penetration percentage was calculated to the total length of the tooth-restoration interface. Data were analyzed with two-way analysis of variance, Kruskal-Wallis, and post hoc tests. After 24 hours, the least amount of nanoleakage depth was recorded for IB, while the highest was recorded for PL. For stored specimens, there was no significant difference among the nanoleakage depths of all adhesives. The tested adhesives recorded different nanoleakage patterns; however, there was an increase in the intensity and continuity of silver deposition by time. After 24 hours, the nanoleakage depth/pattern varied with the type of adhesive used; however, after water storage, all adhesives performed equally.

Influence of oxygen inhibition on the surface free-energy and dentin bond strength of self-etch adhesives

We compared the surface free-energies and dentin bond strengths of single-step self-etch adhesives with and without an oxygen-inhibited layer. The labial dentin surfaces of bovine mandibular incisors were wet ground with #600-grit silicon carbide paper. The adhesives were applied to the ground dentin, light-irradiated, and the oxygen-inhibited layer was either retained or removed with ethanol. The surface free-energies were determined by measuring the contact angles of three test liquids placed on the cured adhesives. The dentin bond strengths of specimens with and without the oxygen-inhibited layer were measured. For all surfaces, the value of the estimated surface tension component was relatively constant at 35.5-39.8 mJ m(-2) . The value of the , Lewis acid component increased slightly when the oxygen-inhibited layer was removed, whereas that of the , Lewis base component decreased significantly. The bond strengths of the self-etch adhesives were significantly lower in specimens without an oxygen-inhibited layer (13.2-13.6 MPa) than in those with an oxygen-inhibited layer (17.5-18.4 MPa). These results indicate that the presence of an oxygen-inhibited layer in single-step self-etch adhesives with advanced photoinitiators promotes higher dentin bond strength.

PH changes upon mixing of single-step self-etching adhesives with powdered dentin.

Single-step self-etching adhesives have been developed as a bonding material that adheres to the tooth surface. The adhesives contain acidic resin monomers that penetrate the dentin but can be neutralized to stop the reaction. This study aimed to improve understanding of the pH changes that occur when self-etching adhesives are mixed with dentin powder. Dentin disks obtained from extracted bovine incisors were milled and pulverized into a fine powder. The powder was mixed with diluted self-etching adhesives, and pH changes were measured by a solid-state pH sensor connected to a pH meter at various time points after the start of mixing. Data were analyzed by Tukey's Honestly Significant Difference (HSD) test and Dunnett's test at a significance level of 0.05. Precipitates from the adhesive/ dentin powder mixture were observed by scanning electron microscopy (SEM). The baseline pH values of the self-etching adhesives ranged from 0.97 to 2.83. After mixing with the dentin powder, the pH values significantly increased, ranging from 6.30 to 7.11 at 180 s after mixing. SEM observation revealed products of the reaction between dentin powder and self-etching adhesive which indicate a chemical reaction between the functional monomer and dentin. Dentin has a strong modulation effect against the acidity of self-etching adhesives.

Permeability of Dental Adhesives – A SEM Assessment

To morphologically evaluate the permeability of different commercial dental adhesives using scanning electron microscopy. SEVEN ADHESIVE SYSTEMS WERE EVALUATED: one three-step system (Scotchbond Multi-Purpose - MP); one two-step self-etching primer system (Clearfil SE Bond - SE); three two-step etch-and-rinse systems (Single Bond 2 - SB; Excite - EX; One-Step - OS); and two single-step self-etching adhesives (Adper Prompt - AP; One-Up Bond F - OU). The mixture of primer and bond agents of the Clearfil SE Bond system (SE-PB) was also tested. The adhesives were poured into a brass mold (5.8 mm x 0.8 mm) and light-cured for 80 s at 650 mW/cm2. After a 24 h desiccation process, the specimens were immersed in a 50% ammoniac silver nitrate solution for tracer permeation. Afterwards, they were sectioned in ultra-fine slices, carbon-coated, and analyzed under backscattered electrons in a scanning electron microscopy. MP and SE showed slight and superficial tracer permeation. In EX, SB, and OS, permeation extended beyond the inner superficies of the specimens. SE-PB did not mix well, and most of the tracer was precipitated into the primer agent. In AP and OU, "water-trees" were observed all over the specimens. Different materials showed distinct permeability in aqueous solution. The extent of tracer permeation varied according to the composition of each material and it was more evident in the more hydrophilic and solvated ones.

Surface free‐energy measurements as indicators of the bonding characteristics of single‐step self‐etching adhesives

This study examined the surface free-energy of dentin treated with the single-step self-etching adhesives Bond Force, Clearfil tri-S Bond, and G-Bond Plus. The labial dentin surfaces of bovine mandibular incisors were wet ground with #180-, #600-, and #2,000-grit silicon carbide paper. The adhesives were applied to the ground dentin, and then rinsed with acetone and distilled water. The surface free-energies were determined by measuring the contact angles of three test liquids placed on the adhesive-treated dentin. The surface free-energies of the samples treated with the G-Bond Plus and Clearfil tri-S Bond adhesives increased as the surface roughness decreased. No significant differences in the surface free-energy were found for the samples treated with the Bond Force adhesive, regardless of the surface roughness. These results indicated that dentin surfaces treated with adhesives did not promote a higher surface-energy state, and that differences in the components of surface energy were apparent for the adhesives tested.

Influence of Storage Conditions of Adhesive Vials on Dentin Bond Strength

This study was carried out to examine the effect of storage conditions of adhesive vials on the dentin bond strength of single-step self-etch adhesive systems. The adhesive/resin composite combinations used were: Absolute 2/Ceram.X(AB), Adper Prompt L-Pop/Filtek Supreme(AP), Bond Force/Estelite sigma Quick(BF), Clearfil tri-S Bond/Clearfil AP-X(CT) and G-Bond/Gradia Direct(GB). Vials of adhesives were stored at 5 degrees C, 23 degrees C or 40 degrees C. Specimens for the dentin bond strength tests were made after 0, 1, 2, 3, 4, 5 and 6 months. Labial bovine mandibular incisor dentin was wet ground with #600 SiC. The adhesives were applied according to the manufacturer's instructions. After adhesive light irradiation, resin composite cylinders were created (4 mm x 2 mm) and polymerized (n = 10). Samples were stored in 37 degrees C distilled water for 24 hours, then shear tested at a crosshead speed of 1.0 mm/minute. ANOVA and Dunnet tests were performed at a significance level of 0.05. Scanning electron microscopic (SEM) observations of the dentin surfaces were made. Bond strengths varied, with storage conditions ranging from 2.2 +/- 1.4 to 9.3 +/- 2.4 MPa for AB, 4.5 +/- 1.5 to 13.3 +/- 2.7 MPa for AP, 5.1 +/- 1.9 to 5.1 +/- 1.9 MPa for BF, 7.7 +/- 1.9 to 19.7 +/- 2.0 MPa for CT and 7.4 +/- 1.3 to 15.7 +/- 2.8 MPa for GB. With longer storage periods and higher temperatures, significant decreases in bond strength were found for all the adhesives. From SEM observation, the etching effect of the adhesives was weakened and the remaining smear layer was observed. The data suggests that the storage conditions of adhesive vials significantly affects the bond strengths of single-application self-etch adhesive systems.

Water sorption/solubility of self-etching dentin bonding agents

Objectives The purpose of this study was to compare the water sorption/solubility, percent conversion and microtensile bond strength of three single-step self-etching adhesives with those of a two-step self-etching primer adhesive system. Methods Solvent evaporation from the adhesives was determined gravimetrically. After removal of volatile solvents, the resins were cast into disks and polymerized. One-half of the disks were incubated in water while the other half were incubated in hexadecane. Repeated measurements of water sorption were made for 10 days followed by drying for 2.5 days to a constant weight. Percent conversion was done using FTIR spectroscopy. Microtensile bond strengths were measured 24 h after bonding. Results All of the adhesives lost 20–30% of their weight after 4 min of forced air except for Fluorobond II which lost no weight. All resins stored in water exhibited a time-dependent increase in water sorption and solubility. The resins stored in hexadecane showed very low sorption and solubility. Water sorption was highest for Absolute 2 (20.7%), intermediate for Fluorobond Shake One (10.2%) and lowest for Clearfil 3S (8.9%) and Fluorobond II (7.5%). Percent conversions ranged from a low of 68.3% for Absolute 2 to a high of 87.4% for Clearfil 3S. The two-step self-etching primer adhesive (Fluorobond II) gave the lowest water sorption and lowest solubility of any of the tested adhesives. SEM observations of resin disks incubated in hexadecane looked similar to unincubated controls. Incubating resin disks in artificial saliva covered the surfaces of the resins with mineral crystallites. Significance Single bottle self-etching adhesives show higher water sorption/solubilities than two-step self-etching adhesives. The former products would not be expected to function as well as the latter products.

Influence of Adhesive Application Time on Enamel Bond Strength of Single-step Self-etch Adhesive Systems

This study examined the relationship between the adhesive application time and enamel bond strength of several single-step self-etch adhesive systems. The adhesives used were: Bond Force (BF, Tokuyama Dental Corporation, Tokyo, Japan), Clearfil tri-S Bond (CT, Kuraray Medical Inc, Tokyo, Japan), iBond Self-Etch (IB, Heraeus Kulzer, Armonk, NY) and OptiBond All-in-One (OB, sds Kerr). Bovine mandibular incisors were mounted in self-curing resin and wet ground with #600-grit silicon carbide paper to expose labial enamel. Adhesives were applied for 10, 20 or 40 seconds and the resin composites were condensed into a mold (phi4 x 2 mm) on the enamel and light irradiated. Ten samples per test group were stored in 37 degrees C water for 24 hours, then shear tested at a crosshead speed of 1.0 mm/minute. One-way ANOVA and the Tukey HSD test (alpha = 0.05) were performed within each adhesive system. The enamel surfaces after adhesive application were also observed in a Field Emission Electron Probe Surface Roughness Analyzer and the Ra value was calculated. The enamel bond strength ranged from 13.6 to 17.8 MPa for BF, 13.6 to 15.9 MPa for CT, 14.3 to 16.2 MPa for IB and 13.4 to 19.8 MPa for OB. Significant increases in bond strength were found for the 40-second application groups, except for IB. No changes in Ra value were found for BF and IB, while significant decreases in Ra value were recorded with 40-second application for CT and OB. The data suggested that the duration of the single-step self-etch adhesive application was a crucial factor for determining the enamel bond strengths of some of the single-step self-etch adhesives employed in the current study.

Enamel bonding of single-step self-etch adhesives: Influence of surface energy characteristics

This study examined the surface free energy of enamel treated with the single-step self-etching adhesives Bond Force, Clearfil tri-S Bond and G-Bond. The labial enamel surfaces of bovine mandibular incisors were wet ground with #180-grit, #600-grit and #2000-grit silicon carbide paper. The adhesives were applied to the ground enamel, and then rinsed with acetone and distilled water. The surface free energies were determined by measuring the contact angles of three test liquids placed on the adhesive-treated enamel. The data for each adhesive system were analyzed using analysis of variance and Tukey's honestly significant difference test. The surface free energies of the samples treated with the G-Bond and tri-S Bond adhesives increased as the surface roughness decreased. No significant differences in the surface free energy were found for the samples treated with the Bond Force adhesive regardless of the surface roughness. The results indicated that the surface free energies and their components of the treated enamel surfaces were different among the adhesive systems used.

Effect of Double-application of Three Single-step Self-etch Adhesives on Dentin Bonding and Mechanical Properties of Resin-dentin Area

This study investigated whether double-application influences the bond strength of single-step self-etch adhesives and the mechanical properties of the resin-dentin area. Three single-step self-etch adhesives (EXL-683, experimental, 3M ESPE; Clearfil Tri-S Bond, Kuraray Medical; G BOND, GC) were applied on dentin surfaces by using the single-application or double-application method. The manufacturers' instructions stated use of the single-application method. Resin composite (Clearfil AP-X, shade A3, Kuraray Medical) was then placed and light cured for 40 seconds. The microshear bond test was carried out and the bond strength data were analyzed using one-way ANOVA with post hoc. The hardness (H) of the bonding layer, resin-dentin interface and dentin beneath the interface at depths of 10 microm and 100 microm were measured with a nanoindentation device (ENT-1100, Elionix). The H data were analyzed using two-way ANOVA, one-way ANOVA and the independent t-test at a significance level of alpha = 0.05. The mean bond strength with single-applications of EXL-683, Clearfil Tri-S Bond and G BOND were 39.1, 36.9 and 30.0 MPa, respectively, while with the double-application, they were 46.9, 40.2 and 32.2 MPa. Double-application for EXL-683 to dentin showed significantly higher bond strength than single-application alpha < 0.05. However, there was no significant difference between the single- and double-application methods for the other two adhesives alpha > 0.05. The H of the bonding layer was significantly influenced by both the adhesive material and application method alpha < 0.001; the H of the bonding layer with a double-application was significantly improved compared to a single-application. The H of the resin-dentin interface was significantly affected by the application method alpha < 0.001, but not by the adhesive material (alpha > 0.05). Neither the H value of dentin at 10 microm nor a depth of 100 microm was affected by the adhesive material or application method (alpha > 0.05). The double application of EXL-683 did improve the bond strength to dentin. The hardness of the bonding layer and resin-dentin interface was significantly affected by the double application for each material used.

Evaluation of the effect of four self‐etching adhesives ondentin permeability

The aim of this study was to evaluate the effect of two two-step and two single-step self-etching adhesives on dentin permeability using a computerized fluid filtration (CFF) test method. Forty recently extracted sound human molar teeth were sectioned at the mid level of the crown to obtain dentin discs of 1 +/- 0.2 mm. A total of 40 discs were obtained and randomly divided into four groups (n = 10). The permeability of the discs was measured using the CFF test method before and after application of the following self-etching adhesives: Hybrid Bond, G-Bond, AdheSE, and Protect Bond. Fluid movement measurements were made at 2-min intervals for 8 min, and a mean of the values obtained was calculated for each specimen. The in vitro fluid conductance of dentin discs treated with Hybrid Bond and AdheSE were lower than the dentin discs treated with G-Bond and Protect Bond (p < 0.05). 1-Treating dentin discs with self-etching adhesives caused significant reduction of dentin permeability. 2-All self-etching adhesives allowed diffusion of distilled water. However, AdheSE and Hybrid Bond showed the lowest permeability.

Kekuatan Rekat Restorasi Komposit Resin pada Permukaan Dentin dengan Sistem Adhesif Self-Etch dalam Berbagai Temperatur

Single-step self-etch adhesive systems are the system that combine self etching primer and bonding agent into one step application. This system was developed as the effort to simplified in application prosedures and give a good bond strength of resin composites to dentin surface. The purpose of this study was to examine the bond strength of resin composites with two singlestep self-etch adhesives system (Xeno III and Clearfil Tri-S Bond) to bovine dentin at temperature of adhesive 3oC, 22oC and 30oC. Adhesive was applied to dentin surface (bovine insisivus mandibular dentin) follow by resin composites bonded according to the manufacturer’s instructions. Tensile bond strength of 60 specimens were tested UTM (universal testing machine) after 24 hours storage in aquadest at 37 oC. The results were analyzed using ANOVA test followed by Tukey’s test (p< 0,05). The bond strength of Xeno III was significantly diffrent from that of Clearfil tri-S Bond, 0,66±0,271, 2,70±1,528, 0,23±0,104 versus 2,07±0,272, 4,77±0,689, 4,39±1,205 MPa at temperature of materials 3oC, 22oC and 30oC respectively. The bond strength of two single- step adhesives system (Xeno III and Clearfil Tri-S Bond) were highest at temperature 22oC than other temperatures of materials. DOI: 10.14693/jdi.v15i3.34

Interfacial ultramorphology of single‐step adhesives: nanoleakage as a function of time

The aim of this study was to examine the effectiveness of single-step self-etching adhesives in preventing nanoleakage over a 90-day water-storage period, and analyse the ultramorphological characteristics of resin-dentin interfaces. Three single-step self-etching adhesives were evaluated: Adper Prompt L-Pop - LP (3M ESPE), iBond - iB (Heraeus Kulzer), and Clearfil Tri-S Bond - S3 (Kuraray). Bonded specimens were sectioned into 0.9-mm thick slabs and stored in water for 1, 60 or 90 days. After the storage periods, a silver tracer solution was used to reveal nanometer-sized spaces and evidence of degradation within resin-dentin interfaces. Epoxy resin-embedded sections were prepared, and the interfaces observed with the TEM. Nanoleakage patterns were compared among adhesives and storage periods using image analysis software. Data were statistically analysed by two-way anova and Tukey test. Nanoleakage was observed in all resin-dentin interfaces produced by the single-step self-etching adhesives. Results showed that LP presented the lowest silver deposition means at 1 day. However, after 60 and 90 days, the area of silver deposition significantly increased for LP. iB presented intense silver deposition after 1 day and a small increase after 90 days. S3 presented the lowest silver deposition means after 60 and 90 days of water-storage.

Determination of elastic modulus of demineralized resin‐infiltrated dentin by self‐etch adhesives

The purpose of this study was to determine ultrasonically the changes in elastic modulus of demineralized adhesive-infiltrated dentin. Dentin disks were obtained from bovine incisors and shaped into a rectangular form. The specimens were immersed in single-step self-etch adhesives, then stored in distilled water and run through thermal cycles between 5 and 60 degrees C. The longitudinal and shear wave sound velocities and the elastic modulus were determined using ultrasonic equipment composed of a pulser-receiver, transducers, and an oscilloscope. After 24 h of storage, the elastic modulus of mineralized dentin was 16.9 GPa and that of demineralized dentin was 2.1 GPa. The immersion of demineralized dentin in adhesives significantly increased the elastic modulus to 3.3-5.9 GPa. After 30,000 thermal cycles, the elastic modulus of dentin was 32.4 GPa, whereas that of demineralized adhesive infiltrated dentin was 3.1-4.1 GPa. Thermal stresses did not cause adhesive-infiltrated demineralized dentin to deteriorate, as measured by elastic modulus.

Xeno III self-etching adhesive in orthodontic bonding: The next generation

The newer single-step self-etching adhesives that etch, prime, and apply the resin bonding agent simultaneously without rinsing have been increasing in popularity in orthodontic bonding. The purpose of this study was to compare the bond strengths and to evaluate the debonding site (with the adhesive remnant index), when a conventional acid-etch conditioner and a self-etching adhesive system (Xeno III, Dentsply DeTrey GmbH, Konstanz, Germany) were used with either a composite resin adhesive (Transbond XT, 3M Unitek, Monrovia, Calif) or a resin-modified glass ionomer cement (Fuji Ortho LC, GC Corp, Tokyo, Japan). One hundred twenty extracted human premolars were mounted in acrylic resin and randomly assigned to 6 groups of 20 teeth each. Shear-peel bond strength testing was performed after thermocycling (5 degrees C-55 degrees C for 500 times) with a Zwick 1440 compression machine (Zwick, Ulm, Germany). The results showed that the bond strengths achieved with Xeno III were comparable with the traditional methods of either 37% phosphoric acid or 10% polyacrylic acid for both Transbond XT and Fuji Ortho LC. Adhesive remnant index scores showed less adhesive remaining on the tooth surface in the Xeno III/Transbond XT adhesive only (no primer) group. Xeno III can be used to bond orthodontic brackets with the adhesives in this study.

Effect of the additional application of a resin layer on dentin bonding using single-step adhesives

The purpose of this study was to prove that an intermediate resin layer (IRL) can increase the bond strength to dentin by reducing the permeability of single-step adhesives. Flat dentin surfaces were created on buccal and lingual side of freshly extracted third molar using a low-speed diamond saw under copious water flow. Approximately 2.0 ㎜ thick axially sectioned dentin slice was abraded with wet #600 SiC paper. Three single-step self-etch adhesives; Adper Prompt L-Pop (3M ESPE, St Paul, MN, USA), One-Up Bond F (Tokuyama Corp, Tokyo, Japan) and Xeno III (Dentsply, Konstanz, Germany) were used in this study. Each adhesive groups were again subdivided into ten groups by; whether IRL was used or not; whether adhesives were cured with light before application of IRL or not; the mode of composite application. The results of this study were as follows; 1. Bond strength of single-step adhesives increased by an additional coating of intermediate resin layer, and this increasement was statistically signigicant when self-cured composite was used (p < 0.001). 2. When using IRL, there were no difference on bond strengths regardless the curing procedure of single-step adhesives. 3. There were no significant difference on bond strengths between usage of AB2 or SM as an IRL. 4. The thickness of hybrid layer was correlated with the acidity of adhesive used, and the nanoleakage represented by silver deposits and grains was examined within hybrid and adhesive layer in most of single-step adhesives. 5. Neither thickness of hybrid layer nor nanoleakage were related to bond strength.

Comparison of Bonding Ability of Single-step Self-etching Adhesives with Different Etching Aggressiveness to Root Dentin

The aim of this study was to compare the bonding ability of single-step self-etching adhesives with different degrees of etching aggressiveness to root dentin. Composite restorations were placed on sound or caries-affected root dentin using a "strong" (Adper Prompt L-Pop, Absolute) or "mild" (Clearfil Tri-S Bond, Reactmer Bond) system. Immediately after restoration placement and after 24-hour storage in distilled water, the bonding interface was examined by scanning electron microscopy. Microtensile bond strength (MTBS) on sound root dentin was also measured with each storage condition. The adhesives with strong etching aggressiveness demonstrated interfacial integrity immediately after restoration and also after 24 hours of storage. Conversely, the "mild" adhesives showed debonding immediately after restoration. There were no statistical differences in MTBS among the four systems, nor between the two storage periods for each material. For restorations on root dentin using single-step adhesives, "strong" systems were thus recommended as they favorably produced a stable bond since the early stage.
