Beliefs and Practices in the Life Cycle of the Agta of Lupigue, North Sierra Madre Mountains: Their Implications to Indigenous Peoples Education

The enactment of the Indigenous Peoples’ Rights Act of 1997 and the legislation of National Commission on Indigenous Peoples Administrative Order No. 1 series of 2012 recognize and promote all the rights of the Indigenous Peoples including the proper documentation of their Indigenous Knowledge Systems and Practices (IKSPs). The absence of formal documentation of their IKSPs is a major issue and is getting increasing attention in the research literature. The ethnographic research was employed to find out the beliefs and practices in the life of the Agta of Lupigue in Sierra Madre Mountains and their implications to education. The Agta still observed some of their beliefs and practices but could hardly explain their existence and persistence. Their observance is more of a sign of respect to their elders and ancestors. These cultural beliefs and practices pose a great challenge to education particularly in its role in social transformation.

DEFORESTATION AND FOREST DEGRADATION ANALYSIS OF SOUTHERN SIERRA MADRE, PHILIPPINES USING GOOGLE EARTH ENGINE AND COMMUNITY MAPPING

Abstract. Google Earth Engine (GEE) has empowered researchers to map and monitor vegetation cover through the utilization of satellite imagery and cloud-computing resources. This study employed such platform to evaluate deforestation and forest degradation (DFD) in the Southern Sierra Madre Mountain range, where historical and current evidence underscores ongoing degradation. This research endeavors to capitalize on GEE to generate land cover maps for the Southern Sierra Madre region, specifically in General Nakar, Quezon, and in Rodriguez, Rizal and to present the changes that occurred during three specific years: 2016, 2019, and 2022. Community mapping activities were also conducted in these municipalities to further validate the results from GEE. The findings indicate that forested lands predominantly encompassed both municipalities, albeit exhibiting a declining pattern for successive years. Analysis of land cover maps revealed that in General Nakar, most of the forest areas converted to shrublands are found in the barangays of Umiray and Pagsangahan while for Rodiguez, most of the forest areas converted to shrublands were found to be in Marikina Watershed Forest Reserve and in Puray. Community mapping unveiled that DFD factors such as kaingin, infrastructure extension, timber poaching, small-scale mining, charcoal making, and natural hazards are also present in these areas. With the availability of these openly available cloud-computing platforms, aided by inputs from members of the communities, efficient monitoring and implementation of interventions may be realized.

ASSESSMENT OF FOREST DISTURBANCES USING REMOTE SENSING: CASE OF KALIWA RIVER FOREST RESERVE (KRFR), PHILIPPINES

Abstract. The Kaliwa River Forest Reserve (KRFR) is located in the southwestern part of the Sierra Madre Mountain Range, Philippines. KRFR is one of the most important forest reserves in the country that is adjacent to urban areas and is very much affected by various forest disturbances. Forest disturbances can be caused by either anthropogenic or natural phenomena (e.g., typhoons, drought, and pathogen outbreaks) and may have negative effects on the forest structure and function. The study used the Normalized Difference Moisture Index (NDMI) in detecting forest disturbances for the period of 2010, 2015, and 2020. Results showed that the deforestation rate has significantly decreased from 6.22% in 2010 to 3.40% in 2020. The National Greening Program (NGP) and intensified forest protection activities of the Department of Environment and Natural Resources (DENR) may have contributed to the observed decreasing trend in deforestation rate. However, forest disturbance in the closed and open forest areas of KRFR gradually increased from 0.11% to 0.40%. Based on the accuracy assessment, the NDMI performed well in determining forest disturbances with mean values of 0.91 and 0.93 for completeness and correctness, respectively. The main contributor to forest disturbances in KRFR was mainly anthropogenic factors such as kaingin, illegal logging, urban sprawl, and upland farming. Outputs of this study can aid in the formulation of policies for better forest resource management, rehabilitation, and protection in the protected area.

Description of Xiphinema ficusi sp. n. (Nematoda: Longidoridae) and molecular characterisation of some Xiphinema species from Mexico

Summary In 2018-2022, during nematological surveys in several Mexican states, a new species, Xiphinema ficusi sp. n., two known species, X. basiri and X. luci, and four unidentified Xiphinema species, Xiphinema sp. A, sp. B, sp. C, and sp. D, were collected and characterised. Xiphinema ficusi sp. n. was found in a tropical forest in the La Mancha Ecological Reserve of the Ecology Institute of Jalapa, Veracruz state. The new species is characterised by a body length of 2.82-3.79 mm, slightly offset lip region, odontostyle 93-105 μm long, guiding ring at 51-96 μm from anterior end, an elongate conical tail 41-50 μm long with digitate terminus, didelphic-amphidelphic reproductive system, with both gonads equally developed without Z differentiation in females. Males have one pair of adanal and four ventromedial supplements. The seven Xiphinema species were molecularly characterised and the phylogenetic relationships of these species with other representatives of this genus were reconstructed using the D2-D3 expansion segments of 28S rRNA and COI gene sequences. Molecular analysis revealed the presence of a parasitic oomycete of the genus Lagenidium in X. ficusi sp. n. and endosymbiotic bacteria of the genus Candidatus Xiphinematobacter in X. luci and Xiphinema sp. D. belonging to the Xiphinema americanum group. It has been suggested that valleys surrounded by ridges of Sierra Madre Mountains in Mexico might be one of the world centres of diversity for the genus Xiphinema.

Tree Species Composition and Diversity in a Secondary Forest along the Sierra Madre Mountain Range in Central Luzon, Philippines: Implications for the Conservation of Endemic, Native, and Threatened Plants

The Sierra Madre Mountain Range (SMMR) is the backbone of the Luzon Islands that contains a high concentration of highly important ecological resources distributed among the 68 protected areas therewith. The present study aimed to assess the composition and diversity of tree species in a secondary forest within the SMMR. A 2.25 km transect with 10 900-m2 plots were established to record tree species with a diameter at breast height of at least 10 cm. The findings revealed 148 individuals of trees from 38 morphospecies, 28 genera, and 20 families. Importance values unveiled the Aurora endemic Macaranga stonei Whitmore as the most important species in terms of the relative values of its abundance, frequency, and dominance. The area was also found to be home to 33 natives, 12 endemics, five IUCN threatened species, and nine Philippine threatened trees. Furthermore, the study site was also found to have considerably high diversity, with a Shannon–Weiner Index value of 3.269 and a relatively even distribution of individuals among species, as supported by the Simpson’s Evenness index value of 0.9453. Significant correlational relationships were also found among species richness, Shannon–Weiner index, and Simpson’s Evenness index, with correlation coefficients ranging from 0.881 to 0.934, with all significant at p < 0.001. Lastly, the study was able to produce a distribution map, which is necessary for implementing targeted conservation strategies. These findings provided valuable implications for future research and implementation of targeted and participatory biodiversity conservation and protection strategies.

Cloud climatology of northwestern Mexico based on MODIS data

ABSTRACT The geographical regions of northwestern Mexico consisting of the Pacific Ocean, the Baja California Peninsula with its mountain range along it, the Gulf of California, and the coastal zone with its Western Sierra Madre Mountain range, configure an alternation of water, land, water, land, all interacting with the atmosphere. It suggests investigating the cloud patterns, what clouds are most relevant in controlling radiation and the climate, and what type of cloud is associated with observed precipitation patterns in the region. The principal aim was to carry out a climatology of five types of clouds: cumulonimbus, cumulus, altostratus, stratocumulus and nimbostratus. The data set was obtained from the MODIS sensor, placed on the Aqua and Terra satellites, covering the period from 2001 to 2020. The results revealed that the precipitation distribution predominantly relates to the deep convective cloud pattern. A minor fraction of rain is associated with the nimbostratus cloud pattern. The pattern of the fraction of total coverage of the five types of clouds coincides very well with lower radiation values, demonstrating the regulatory role of clouds in the area’s climatology.

Does the Sierra Madre Mountain Range in Luzon Act as a Barrier to Typhoons?

Tropical cyclones (TCs) making landfall in Luzon weaken due to the surface friction of Luzon’s mountainous terrain and the reduced ocean heat, momentum, and moisture fluxes over the landmass. Landmass also influences TC rain distribution by orographic enhancement or blocking of a TC’s moisture-laden circulation. In this study, we investigated the influence of the effects of the Sierra Madre and the Cordillera Mountains Ranges (SMMR and CMR) on TC-associated wind and rainfall hazards to answer the question of whether the SMMR or the CMR mitigates TC hazards. We used the Weather Research and Forecasting (WRF) model with modified SMMR and CMR terrains to disentangle the effects of the orography with flat land. Results show that Luzon-passing TCs maintain their intensities at landfall regardless of the frictional effects of the mountain ranges but the CMR inhibits the re-intensification of westward-moving TCs emerging from landmass after traversing Luzon. The SMMR reduces wind exposure and basin-wide rainfall of the Cagayan Valley. Hence, the SMMR can be considered a barrier for that region. In addition, the weakening effect of the SMMR reduces the wind exposure of the island of Catanduanes and eastern Bicol the most. However, for the rest of Luzon, the SMMR enhances rainfall which will likely compensate for the slight decrease in wind exposure – especially considering that most TC-related damages are water/rainfall related. The CMR, overall, has a larger hazard-mitigating effect than the SMMR. In any case, we believe that shifting the discourse to these mountains’ biodiversity conservation and restoration – rather than their purported TC mitigating effects – will be more strategically constructive.

Morphometric and genetic analyses show differentiation of the widely distributed stingless bee Nannotrigona perilampoides (Hymenoptera: Meliponini) across geographic regions in Mexico

Stingless bees are a diverse group of insects that contribute a wealth of fauna to Central America, as well as being important pollinators. Colonies of these stingless bees are managed and transported unregulated across geographic regions on the basis that they are native species. Populations of Nannotrigona perilampoides, one of the most common stingless bee species in Mexico and Central America, are separated by several geographical barriers that may act as obstacles to gene flow. In addition, their biological and reproductive characteristics make them susceptible to variation among their populations. In this work, we combined morphometric and molecular analyses (through cox1, 16S, ITS1 and ITS2 sequencing) to test whether there is a differentiation between distant populations of N. perilampoides separated by the Sierra Madre Mountain complex. Analyses of wing geometric morphometrics and sequence variation of a fragment of the 16S gene revealed significant differences between populations. These differences show a pattern of isolation by distance, and the possible effect of the Sierra Madre as a biogeographical barrier. The results suggest that N. perilampoides may be composed of distinct evolutionary units and that colony exchange among regions should be restricted to preserve the diversity of this species.

Modeling the risk of illegal forest activity and its distribution in the southeastern region of the Sierra Madre Mountain Range, Philippines

Illegal activity within protected forests, such as illegal logging, slash-and-burn farming, and agricultural expansion, has brought many plant and animal species to the brink of extinction and threatens various conservation efforts. The Philippine government has introduced a number of actions to combat environmental degradation, including the use of mobile platforms such as the SMART-Lawin system to collect patrol data from the field, which represents a remarkable step towards data-driven conservation management. However, it remains difficult to control illegal forest activity within protected landscapes due to limited patrol and law enforcement resources. A better understanding of the spatial distribution of illegal activity is crucial to strengthening and efficiently implementing forest protection practices. In the present study, we predicted the spatial distribution of illegal activity and identified the associated environmental factors using maximum entropy modeling (MaxEnt). Patrol data collected using the SMART-Lawin system from the Baliuag Conservation Area for the period 2017-2019 were used to train and validate the MaxEnt models. We tuned the MaxEnt parameter setting using the ENMeval package in R to overcome sampling bias, avoid overfitting, and balance model complexity. The resulting MaxEnt models provided a clear understanding of the overall risk of illegal activity and its spatial distribution within the conservation area. This study demonstrated the potential utility of data-driven models developed from patrol observation records. The output of this research is beneficial for conservation managers who are required to allocate limited resources and make informed management decisions.

Inspired by Harold Conklin

Harold C. Conklin (1926-2016) is without doubt one of the key figures in ethnobotany and environmental anthropology. His work is admired for, among other qualities, its precision and its level of « fine description ». In particular, his pioneering studies on shifting cultivation have changed the general perspective on this way of land use. His Ethnographic Atlas of Ifugao (1980) is still a landmark of ethnographic fieldwork, combining a wide range of methods, including sophisticated cartography. The focus of this atlas was on the culture of Ifugao farmers in their home area in the Cordillera Mountains on the island of Luzon in the Philippines. In recent decades, thousands of Ifugao farmers have left their home area and migrated eastwards to the Sierra Madre Mountains in the northeastern part of Luzon, across Cagayan Valley. They have done so for various reasons but land shortage is certainly one of them. In the foothills of the Sierra Madre, accessible arable land became available after large-scale commercial logging operations. In this article we will draw attention to the relevance of Conklin’s work before describing how the Ifugao farmers, with their extensive knowledge and experience, have been able to turn this new area into a highly productive environment, combining wet rice fields with upland agriculture. The research is based on fieldwork that was done over several years with Filipino, Dutch and other international students in the context of a long-standing cooperation project between Isabela State University in the Philippines and Leiden University (Netherlands).

Mechanical forcing of the North American monsoon by orography.

A band of intense rainfall extends more than 1,000 km along Mexico's west coast during Northern Hemisphere summer, constituting the core of the North American monsoon1,2. As in other tropical monsoons, this rainfall maximum is commonly thought to be thermally forced by emission of heat from land and elevated terrain into the overlying atmosphere3-5, but a clear understanding of the fundamental mechanism governing this monsoon is lacking. Here we show that the core North American monsoon is generated when Mexico's Sierra Madre mountains deflect the extratropical jet stream towards the Equator, mechanically forcing eastward, upslope flow that lifts warm and moist air to produce convective rainfall. These findings are based on analyses of dynamic and thermodynamic structures in observations, global climate model integrations and adiabatic stationary wave solutions. Land surface heat fluxes do precondition the atmosphere for convection, particularly in summer afternoons, but these heat fluxes alone are insufficient for producing the observed rainfall maximum. Our results indicate that the core North American monsoon should be understood as convectively enhanced orographic rainfall in a mechanically forced stationary wave, not as a classic, thermally forced tropical monsoon. This has implications for the response of the North American monsoon to past and future global climate change, making trends in jet stream interactions with orography of central importance.

Diversity, distribution, and conservation status of Rubiaceae species in Peñablanca Protected Landscape and Seascape, Luzon, Philippines

Abstract. Biag RA, Alejandro GJD. Diversity, distribution, and conservation status of Rubiaceae species in Peñablanca Protected Landscape and Seascape, Luzon, Philippines. Biodiversitas 22: 3627-3636. Peñablanca Protected Landscape and Seascape (PPLS) is the largest protected area (PA) in the province of Cagayan, Luzon, Philippines. As part of the Sierra Madre Mountain Range and being contiguous with the Northern Sierra Madre Natural Park, there is no doubt that this PA would display species endemism and richness. Hence, botanical surveys through purposive sampling in seven barangays/districts were conducted in the PPLS to determine the species diversity and distribution of Rubiaceae. This study also aims to identify the endemic species and determine their conservation status. Forty-two species of Rubiaceae belonging to 19 genera and 13 tribes were documented in the current study. The most species-rich tribes are Spermacoceae (9 sp.), followed by Psychotrieae (7 sp.), Pavetteae (6 sp.), Naucleae (5 sp.), Ixoreae (4 sp.), Aleisantheae (2 sp.), Mussaendeae (2 sp.), and Vanguerieae (2 sp.). The rest of the tribes, i.e., Augusteae, Coffeeae, Gardenieae, Knoxieae, and Morindeae, are represented by a single species. Minanga, Nabbabalayan and Sisim harbor the most species. Results show that 19 Philippine endemic species are thriving in the PPLS. Of these, four are threatened species; one is near threatened, three being least concern, two as data deficient, and the rest were not evaluated.

Plant species diversity and assessment in Quezon Protected Landscape, Southern Luzon, Philippines

Quezon Protected Landscape (QPL) is a tropical rainforest situated at the southern Sierra Madre mountain range. However, it is subjected to anthropogenic pressure that poses threats to its flora and fauna. This study was conducted to describe the plant diversity, assess their ecological and conservation status, and to identify current anthropogenic threats in various vegetation types in QPL. Vegetation assessment was done using quadrat method established at different land use types wherein ninety 10×10 m nested plots were used for trees, 5×5 m subplots were used for herbs and shrubs, and 1×1 m subplots were used for grasses. The study documented a total of 328 species belonging to 84 families and 208 genera with 2,737 individuals. Species diversity is high as revealed by the values obtained from species diversity (H’) and species evenness (J’) indexes. Out of 172 tree species identified, the most important species are: Parashorea malaanonan (Blanco) Merr. in the regenerating and lowland evergreen dipterocarp forest; Diospyros pyrrhocarpa Miq. in the karst forest; Leucaena leucocephala (Lam.) de Wit in the secondary forest; and Cocos nucifera L. in the agroforest. Assessment of ecological status showed that out of 328 species, 213 (64.94%) are native, wherein 65 (19.8%) are endemic, and 115 (35.06%) are introduced. Forty-five species (13.72%) are threatened in which 25 of those are endemic in the Philippines. Overall, QPL has a wide array of plant species and threats such as the illegal extraction of natural resources, encroachment, cleanliness and presence of invasive alien species. So, it is recommended that protection and awareness campaign should be done for conservation and sustainability. Evidence of eddy-related deep-ocean current variability in the northeast tropical Pacific Ocean induced by remote gap winds

Abstract. There has been a steady increase in interest in mining of deep-sea minerals in the Clarion–Clipperton Zone (CCZ) in the eastern Pacific Ocean during the last decade. This region is known to be one of the most eddy-rich regions in the world ocean. Typically, mesoscale eddies are generated by intense wind bursts channeled through gaps in the Sierra Madre mountains in Central America. Here, we use a combination of satellite and in situ observations to evaluate the relationship between deep-sea current variability in the region of potential future mining and eddy kinetic energy (EKE) in the vicinity of gap winds. A geometry-based eddy detection algorithm has been applied to altimetry sea surface height data for a period of 24 years, from 1993 to 2016, in order to analyze the main characteristic parameters and the spatiotemporal variability of mesoscale eddies in the northeast tropical Pacific Ocean (NETP). Significant differences between the characteristics of eddies with different polarity (cyclonic vs. anticyclonic) were found. For eddies with lifetimes longer than 1 d, cyclonic polarity is more common than anticyclonic rotation. However, anticyclonic eddies are larger in size, show stronger vorticity, and survive longer in the ocean than cyclonic eddies (often 90 d or more). Besides the polarity of eddies, the location of eddy formation should be taken into consideration when investigating the impacted deep-ocean region as we found eddies originating from the Tehuantepec (TT) gap winds lasting longer in the ocean and traveling farther distances in a different direction compared to eddies produced by the Papagayo (PP) gap winds. Long-lived anticyclonic eddies generated by the TT gap winds are observed to travel distances up to 4500 km offshore, i.e., as far as west of 110∘ W. EKE anomalies observed in the surface of the central ocean at distances of ca. 2500 km from the coast correlate with the seasonal variability of EKE in the region of the TT gap winds with a time lag of 5–6 months. A significant seasonal variability of deep-ocean current velocities at water depths of 4100 m was observed in multiple-year time series data, likely reflecting the energy transfer of the surface EKE generated by the gap winds to the deep ocean. Furthermore, the influence of mesoscale eddies on deep-ocean currents is examined by analyzing the deep-ocean current measurements when an anticyclonic eddy crosses the study region. Our findings suggest that despite the significant modulation of dominant current directions driven by the bottom-reaching eddy, the current magnitude intensification was not strong enough to trigger local sediment resuspension in this region. A better insight into the annual variability of ocean surface mesoscale activity in the CCZ and its effects on deep-ocean current variability can be of great help to mitigate the impact of future potential deep-sea mining activities on the benthic ecosystem. On an interannual scale, a significant relationship between cyclonic eddy characteristics and El Niño–Southern Oscillation (ENSO) was found, whereas a weaker correlation was detected for anticyclonic eddies.

Genetic analysis reveals an east-west divide within North American Vitis species that mirrors their resistance to Pierce's disease.

Pierce's disease (PD) caused by the bacterium Xylella fastidiosa is a deadly disease of grapevines. This study used 20 SSR markers to genotype 326 accessions of grape species collected from the southeastern and southwestern United States, Mexico and Costa Rica. Two hundred sixty-six of these accessions, and an additional 12 PD resistant hybrid cultivars developed from southeastern US grape species, were evaluated for PD resistance. Disease resistance was evaluated by quantifying the level of bacteria in stems and measuring PD symptoms on the canes and leaves. Both Bayesian clustering and principal coordinate analyses identified two groups with an east-west divide: group 1 consisted of grape species from the southeastern US and Mexico, and group 2 consisted of accessions collected from the southwestern US and Mexico. The Sierra Madre Oriental mountain range appeared to be a phylogeographic barrier. The state of Texas was identified as a potential hybridization zone. The hierarchal STRUCTURE analysis on each group showed clustering of unique grape species. An east-west divide was also observed for PD resistance. With the exception of Vitis candicans and V. cinerea accessions collected from Mexico, all other grape species as well as the resistant southeastern hybrid cultivars were susceptible to the disease. Southwestern US grape accessions from drier desert regions showed stronger resistance to the disease. Strong PD resistance was observed within three distinct genetic clusters of V. arizonica which is adapted to drier environments and hybridizes freely with other species across its wide range.

Morphological and genetic differentiation in isolated populations of Mexican beech Fagus grandifolia subsp. mexicana

Mexican beech [Fagus grandifolia subsp. mexicana (Martinez) A.E.Murray] is a subspecies endemic to the Sierra Madre Oriental Mountains and considered endangered due to the low density of its populations and high degree of habitat fragmentation and environmental specificity. Because its morphological and genetic variation is associated with its ability to adapt to changes in environmental conditions, the objective of this study was to determine whether phenotypic and genotypic variation exist, and it relationships with population reduction events. In four beech populations in the states of Hidalgo and Veracruz, we analyzed 11 morphological variables for leaves and 6 microsatellite markers. The morphological variables that to discriminate between populations were related to the size of the leaf, but a robust differentiation pattern was not found, given that independent groups of leaves were identified. The populations located closest to each other, had greater genetic variation and less genetic distance; populations in the extreme north and south had the lowest genetic variation. Genetic differentiation among populations was associated with reduction in population size. In the 3 localities in Hidalgo, recent bottlenecks were identified, and in Veracruz, an old bottleneck was found. Variation in leaf morphology and genetic structure of Mexican beech populations could be the result of a combination of various geographical, climate and ecological factors.

Fruit Bat Assemblage in Different Lowland Forest Types in the Northern Sierra Madre Mountains, Philippines

Prior studies of species assemblages of fruit bats in the Philippines have focused on primary and disturbed habitats as the point of comparison. No studies to date have been conducted on assemblages of fruit bats within primary lowland forest vegetation types. This study aimed to determine the fruit bat assemblage in dipterocarp, mangrove and lowland ultramafic forest and their association with these vegetation types. We hypothesize that difference in the diversity and abundance of fruit-producing plants in these habitat types would influence the abundance and diversity of bats. The study was conducted in the Northern Sierra Madre Natural Park, Philippines from April to October 2017. Eleven species of fruit bats were captured during the study, in order of decreasing abundance: Rousettus amplexicaudatus, Ptenochirus jagori, Cynopterus brachyotis, Macroglossus minimus, Haplonycteris fischeri, Eonycteris robusta, Desmalopex leucopterus, Eonycteris spelaea, Pteropus vampyrus, Acerodon jubatus and Pteropus hypomelanus. Species richness was highest in dipterocarp forest (11 species), and lowest in the mangrove area (seven species), but species diversity was highest in the lowland ultramafic forest. The study suggests that species diversity and abundance of fruit bats in the different lowland vegetation habitats can be linked to their diet and morphology. Frugivores were strongly associated with dipterocarp forest and lowland ultramafic forest where fruit-producing plant diversity is high. Haplonycteris fischeri, C. brachyotis and P. jagori were more abundant in the dipterocarp than in the ultramafic forest. The abundance of nectarivores varied between vegetation types. Macroglossus minimus was more abundant in the mangrove while E. robusta and R. amplexicaudatus were more abundant in the dipterocarp and ultramafic forest. The difference in plant species composition and abundance may explain the variation in frugivore and nectarivore abundance between vegetation types. No pattern could be discerned for the large flying foxes (A. jubatus, P. hypomelanus, and P. vampyrus) because of few captures in each habitat, except for D. leucopterus, which was frequently captured in lowland ultramafic forest. The low captures of flying foxes may be attributed to the difficulty of capturing high-flying bats. Further research on foraging behavior, fruit selection by bats and the role of forest structure in determining the abundance and distribution of fruit bats is needed.

GIS-Modeling of Island Hopping Through the Philippines Demonstrates Trade-Offs Migrant Grey-Faced Buzzards During Oceanic Crossings

Migration can be costly with consequences that can influence population trajectories. These costs and consequences are especially heightened during over-water travels, which can be high-risk events for birds. We created spatial models to evaluate potential migratory responses of “oceanic”, island-hopping grey-faced buzzards that encounter variation in landscape parameters and weather as they move through and out of the Philippine archipelago. We constrained the modeled routes to enter the island chain at Basco and to use one of four potential exit points in the south of the country, either Balabac, Bongao, Balut Island, or Cape San Agustin. We used all possible combinations of our three external parameters (stopover sites, water crossings and wind direction) to model alternative migratory routes for each of the four exit points (n = 20 migratory routes). Modeled grey-faced buzzard routes were between 1,582 and 2,970 km. Routes overlapped over eastern and central Luzon, along a leading line created by the Sierra Madre Mountains. Routes also overlapped and suggested unavoidable over-water crossings between Mindoro and Palawan, Negros and Zamboanga del Norte, and Leyte and Surigao. Our models suggest that the optimal migratory strategy for these birds is to find the shortest route to an exit point with the greatest possible access to stopover habitats and fewest open-water crossings under wind resistance. Understanding how each of these external factors affected the geography and characteristics of the migratory routes helps us to understand the context for different migratory strategies of birds that face dangerous open-water crossings on migration.

La endoalteridad y su tratamiento / Acerca de los consanguíneos depredadores en el México oriental

Among the Otomi of the eastern Sierra Madre mountain range, the question of alterity addresses the status of antagonistic beings interacting within the social space of the native community which encompasses both the ecosystem of the living and the domain occupied by the dwellers of the underworld. We emphasize the contrast between an exoalterity concerning all the foreign alteri, i.e. unknown people, and an endoalterity that includes threatening enemies originating from the very circle of commensality. Among the latter are the witches, some of whom are kin to those in the circle of commensality, on a quest for blood entailing the sacrifice of newborns, assimilated to the progeny of the Devil, in order to satisfy the predation of this vital substance, assimilated to semen, which is the preliminary condition leading to the revitalization of the cosmos, as expressed in a spectacular way by the octava ritual at the end of Carnival time.

<p><strong><em>Melastoma malabituin</em></strong><strong> (Melastomataceae): a new species from northern Luzon, Philippines</strong></p>

Melastoma malabituin is described and illustrated. This new species is currently only known from the municipalities of San Mariano and Echague, Isabela Province, Luzon, Philippines, where it is found in remnants of secondary lowland forests in the Sierra Madre mountain range. It is characterized by having densely pilose indumentum on young stems and petioles, penicillate trichomes on its hypanthium, and serrulate and ciliate petals with an apical penicillate emergence.
