The mediating effect of individual capital in the relationship between entrepreneurship education and social entrepreneurship intentions

PurposeThis study examines the impact of entrepreneurship education on the social entrepreneurship intentions of undergraduate students with a focus on the mediating effects of individual capital, such as human, social and cultural capital.Design/methodology/approachThis study adopted a quantitative approach with data collected from 392 third- and fourth-year students studying at a private university in Vietnam through a self-administered survey. The data were analysed using partial least squares structural equation modelling.FindingsThe results show that entrepreneurship education positively impacts the social entrepreneurship intentions of undergraduate students. Furthermore, this study reveals that social and cultural capital serve as mediators in this relationship, whereas the mediating role of human capital was not supported.Practical implicationsThe study findings highlight the crucial role of higher education institutions in promoting and implementing formal entrepreneurship education. It also emphasises the importance of supporting enhancement of students' individual capital through social and cultural activities to foster their intentions to engage in social entrepreneurship.Originality/valueThis study adds to the current literature on social entrepreneurship intentions by highlighting the significance of entrepreneurship education provided by universities and the roles of individual capital, such as social and cultural capital, in mediating the impact of entrepreneurship education on social entrepreneurship intentions.

TINJAUAN LITERATUR: Pendidikan Entrepreneur Mahasiswa

The purpose of this research is to identify and direct efforts needed to enhance the role of higher education institutions in entrepreneurship education. The method for searching data sources for articles was conducted through the GARUDA database (2019-2023) to retrieve relevant articles published in Bahasa Indonesia. Terms and key phrases related to student entrepreneurs were reviewed through abstracts or texts of research journals before being included in the review according to criteria. Based on the analysis of the literature review, there were 59 relevant journals found. The review results indicate that by implementing relevant curriculum provision steps, business incubators and startup accelerators, entrepreneurship skills training, collaboration with industries, funding support, entrepreneurship mindset development, and coaching and mentoring programs, universities are expected to play a more effective role in preparing students to become successful entrepreneurs. This, in turn, will contribute to economic growth, job creation, and achieving Indonesia's vision as a developed country by 2045.

How higher education institutions may catalyse regional innovation ecosystems: The case of polytechnics in Portugal

This article explores the crucial role of higher education institutions in catalysing regional innovation ecosystems. In particular, it aims to study how polytechnics in Portugal have been involved in this process. The research utilizes an exploratory and reflective case study approach to present real-world evidence of collaborative efforts within innovation networks that involve both businesses and the social economy. Thus, the study raises awareness of collaborative innovation and entrepreneurship networks, emphasizing genuine interactive learning and knowledge exchange. Polytechnic institutions can enhance regional competitiveness by providing education and training for future entrepreneurs and highly skilled professionals, as well as offering technological and managerial solutions that drive value creation and the emergence of new businesses and markets, potentially even on an international level. The study also emphasizes the fourth mission of higher education institutions, particularly polytechnic institutes, focusing on empowering communities through social innovation projects for sustainable local and regional development.

The pivotal role of higher education institutions in cultivating a sustainable development goals-centric culture

PurposeThis study aims to investigate the contribution of higher education institutions (HEIs) to the sustainable development goals (SDGs) and propose strategies to cultivate a culture centred on the SDGs in HEIs.Design/methodology/approachThe methodology used encompassed an integrative literature review, combining bibliographic analysis on how HEIs incorporate the SDGs into their practices, adopting a qualitative approach for the analysis and categorization of the results.FindingsThe multifaceted contributions of HEIs in promoting the SDGs stand out, through their roles in teaching, research, management and integration and communication between university and society.Research limitations/implicationsWhile influencing policies at various levels, HEIs encounter challenges in the effective integration of SDGs into their strategies. This underscores the need for contextualized governance, understanding students’ perspectives on sustainability and active external collaboration in policy formulation.Practical implicationsThere is an urgent need to integrate SDGs into academic programmes, emphasizing the importance of redesigning curricula, actively involving teachers, researchers and students, establishing partnerships and promoting research applied to SDGs.Social implicationsThe social relevance of the study lies in the emphasis on an SDG-centred culture, involving teaching, research, outreach, community engagement and governance practices.Originality/valueThe study’s uniqueness lies in identifying persistent challenges during the transition to an SDG-centred culture, necessitating multisectoral collaboration and educational programmes that integrate sustainability principles into the strategy of HEIs.

Progress and challenges of gender mainstreaming in Spanish university cooperation for international development: the technical staff’s viewpoints

PurposeConsidering the critical role of higher education institutions in the advancement of the 2030 Agenda, this paper aims to analyse the incorporation of the gender perspective (Sustainable Development Goal 5) in the University Cooperation for International Development.Design/methodology/approachFollowing a qualitative methodological strategy, this paper identifies the potentialities and challenges of this perspective from the point of view of the technical staff of the cooperation units of seven Spanish universities.FindingsResults show a strong intention to incorporate gender principles, in accordance with the SDGs framework. However, the findings also point to certain divergences in the forms of understanding and implementing gender equality in practice. Finally, this paper uncovers a variety of strategies to navigate the resistances, still existing in the university community.Originality/valueSpain is orienting the legal framework of its cooperation and international relations towards the ambitious horizon of a feminist foreign policy. Universities are key actors in international development cooperation and the implementation of the SDGs. This is an issue that has received little research attention, particularly from a gender perspective.

Systemic View of the Role of Higher Educational Institutions in the Great Reset

The Great Reset is a concept proposed by the World Economic Forum to rebuild the global economy sustainably following the COVID-19 pandemic, emphasising stakeholder capitalism, greener practices, and more equitable social contracts. However, most of the literature focuses on the role of business and government actors in the Great Reset. At the same time, research that considers the role of higher education institutions (HEIs) is lacking. However, HEIs have the significant capacity to support various aspects of the Great Reset. In this work, we examine different mechanisms by which HEIs could bring change, such as fostering the growth of workforce skills, promoting entrepreneurship and innovation, participating in community development and others. A survey on a sample of university professors, postdoctoral researchers, and research assistants has been conducted with the goal of evaluating the degree to which HEIs have played a role in influencing economic recovery after COVID-19, leveraging the industry 4.0, enhancing regional development, revitalising global cooperation, formulating sustainable business models, restoring environmental well-being, and restructuring social contracts, skills, and employment opportunities. A two-step cluster analysis has been conducted, indicating that HEIs played different roles in the Great Reset process, being the Leaders, Followers and Laggers. We found a significant difference between the various groups of respondents according to their scientific field, position, and region regarding the perception of the role played by their HEIs in influencing economic recovery after COVID-19. The position of the respondents contributed to their perception of the role that their HEIs participated in the process of the Great Reset, with the assistant professors perceiving the most often that their HEIs are Leaders. Additionally, the scientific field and region of the HEI also impacted their role in the Great Reset, with the HEIs from technology and countries outside of Europe being the Leaders most often. On the other hand, Followers and Laggers were equally from social sciences and other fields and European countries.

The role of Higher Education Institutions in training engineers for the era of circular economy: the Portuguese case

The transition from linear economy (LE) towards a circular economy (CE) is Europe Union´s (EU) concerned and involve lot of efforts and actions. Education for circular economy (ECE) is emergent. This paper aims to map Higher Education Institutions (HEIs) in Portugal, Bachelor’s and Master’s degree programs and Postgraduate courses in Industrial Engineering and Management (IEM) that address CE in their curricula with the aim of empowering students for the new era. A systematic search was performed to identify B.Sc./ M.Sc. in IEM of Portuguese Universities and Polytechnic Institutes, public and private, analyzing the content of their curricular units. As results, this study did not identify a strong interest about CE on the part of HEIs and their lecturers. Findings suggest that HEIs are not training future IEM engineers for the era of CE. This study contributes to make an alert to HEIs and their lecturers to review their teaching process, stimulating to improve the quality of the IEM curricula. We suggest a deep reform of the professional curriculum system, enriching curricular. Future studies can approach skills and competences developed towards CE what facilitate a redesign of courses.

Analysis and Enlightenment of the Current Situation of Student Affairs Management in Chinese Universities

Student affairs play a crucial role in higher education institutions in university education. This paper aims to elucidate the development history and characteristics of student affairs management in universities at home and abroad, proposing some experiences that Chinese universities can draw upon. It advocates for the establishment of the concepts of “serving students” and “developing students,” with a focus on addressing students’ needs and fostering their growth. It emphasizes enhancing students’ self-management abilities and nurturing their autonomy and sense of responsibility.

THE IMPACT OF THE INTERNET ON STUDENT COMMUNICATION DEVELOPMENT

In the context of the rapid development of information technologies, the internet and online communication exert a multifaceted influence on students. Starting with the hypothesis that students are more closely connected to technological progress than others. The study was conducted on the impact of the internet on the development of their communication skills and educational processes. The research aims to determine the positive and negative impacts of online resources on the quality of students' communication in both personal and educational spheres. Additionally, it seeks to assess the role of higher educational institutions in teaching students effective online resource usage skills. According to the research, only 6 % of the literature suggests positive impact of the internet on human health, while most indicates negative effects on mental and physical health, as well as on communication skills development. These results lead to the conclusion that it is necessary to educate students on rational use of technologies to avoid negative consequences for education and social interaction in the future. Educational institutions play an important role in this process by providing students with the necessary knowledge in this area, aiding their social adaptation and development in the modern digital world.

From Life-Skills Research and Training to Sustainability: A Case Study from a Spanish University

We are currently facing a potential ‘polycrisis’, a critical inflection point that requires a holistic response aimed at building collective foresight and preparedness for short-, medium-, and long-term risks. The role of higher education institutions and social stakeholders is decisive for sustainability goals. This paper presents a case study where academia, governance, and industry have aligned to challenge, inspire, and encourage universities to enhance student growth and bind macro-scale measures leading to a sustainable future. A teaching innovation project has served as a transforming lever, in combination with the private sector, to create a platform that reaches more than 50,000 undergraduate students and teaching staff. This structure, rooted in the 2031 Strategic Plan of the University of Granada, has also served to channel local and regional initiatives, establish effective partnerships with broad social members, raise awareness, and promote actions to advance in the pursuit of Sustainable Development Goals. A comprehensive overview is provided, which details its chronology, materials, results, challenges, impact, and descriptions of the various courses, programs, and actions. The paper concludes with recommendations for future research, policy and cooperation among stakeholders.

Formation of a state approach to the accumulation of human potential through the prism of the importance of education

The subject of the research is a scientifically based concept of human development as the basis for the formation of a socially oriented state policy, as well as the idea of "human capital" derived from it. The paper pays attention to the historical aspects of the formation of the worldview approach under study. The issues of introducing the concept of "human potential" into the economic, political and legal environment of modern states are considered. The factors influencing the progressive development of human potential are investigated, with an emphasis on the role of education in this field in general, and higher education in particular. The article analyzes the specific features of the functioning of the modern educational environment of the Russian Federation, as well as factors influencing the process of integration of education, science and practice in Russia and in the world. Within the framework of the conducted research, the entire complex of formal and logical methods of cognition was used, statistical as well as comparative legal methods were used. The main conclusion of the study is to identify the need, justified by the current situation, for the formation of a new, scientifically based state approach to the accumulation of human potential of our state, formed through the prism of increasing the role of higher education institutions in the formation of both the human potential of the country as a whole and the individual human capital of each individual. The paper notes that higher education institutions, contributing to this capital in the form of high-quality education and scientific research, which is in demand in the realities of the innovative economy, become a key link in the formation of a reliable chain linking the success of the economy, the prosperity of the nation and the well-being of each member of society, which, ultimately, will overcome the existing ones at the present stage difficulties.

Government Challenges and Financial Strengthening of Higher Education in Mexico

The allocation of public resources can either enhance or hinder a nation’s educational development at any level. This research examines the direction of international commitmentto education, the role of Higher Education Institutions, and the capture and implementation of funding sources. The text discusses education as a human right and a mechanism forphysical, social, emotional, creative, and humanistic development within socio‑political precepts. The analysis focuses on 13 State Public Universities in Mexico, examiningbudgetary variations and their impact on students and institutions. The text contrasts discursive and factual information. Among the main findings, Mexican Higher Education has the highest budget allocation. However, the sources of financing do not fully cover citizen demand. Operating expenses include the equipment of classrooms, maintenance of buildings, and salary payments. Home Education: Needs, Challenges, and the Role of Higher Education Institutions

Home education has garnered significant attention from governments worldwide. This educational approach prompts inquiries about quality, social-emotional development, potential child abuse, curriculum, academic outcomes, and parental involvement. Despite its historical presence in the United States since the 1900s, homeschooling has experienced gradual growth, influenced by regulatory efforts and family dynamics. The emergence of COVID-19 further accelerated this trend, with the number of homeschooling families in the US rising from 1,690,000 in 2016 to 2.6 million in 2020 and reaching 3 million by 2021 Globally, over 300 million families have embraced this educational model. This research employs a mixed, non-experimental, descriptive methodology and focuses on Puerto Rico. It examines demographic data, needs, and obstacles encountered by homeschooling families, categorizing them by groups, regions, teaching methods, and religious affiliations. Additionally, the study explores the role of universities as potential partners in supporting and serving homeschooling families. Furthermore, we present international research findings on academic achievement and socialization among homeschooled students, drawing from several studies and university entrance scores.

Assessing the determinants of participation in the circular plastic economy by Nigerian students

Purpose This study aims to address the critical subject of building capacity for the circular economy in the global south. It complements the literature by providing information on the role of higher education institutions in developing skills for the circular plastic economy. Design/methodology/approach This study used a mixed method approach drawing on reflective analysis on qualitative data from 5 focus groups and 12 semi-structured interviews, and structural equation modelling of quantitative data from 151 students across 4 Nigerian Universities. Findings The results indicate that Nigerian university students are more likely to participate in the circular plastic economy through a high prominence of soft power features such as increased awareness, inspiration, idea generation, encouragement and capacity building. Research limitations/implications The main limitation of this study is with the sample. A larger data set, including other tertiary institutions such as private universities, polytechnics and schools of vocational studies, would strengthen the results. Practical implications The study underlines the importance of targeted policy interventions and pedagogic innovations to drive awareness and knowledge building among Nigeria’s youth population. Originality/value This study makes a novel contribution by using empirical evidence to determine the predictors of student participation in the circular plastic economy. This understanding is important for the development and implementation of appropriate policies that promote participation in the circular plastic economy. Furthermore, given the typical youthful age bracket of university students, any plans to achieve a systemic shift in the plastic value chain must involve the young generation.

ORGANIZACIONES SOSTENIBLES? LA PERCEPCIÓN DE LOS ESTUDIANTES DE UNA INSTITUCIÓN DE EDUCACIÓN SUPERIOR

The role of Higher Education Institutions (HEIs) as opinion and behavior makers has long been recognized and this affects relevant issues between society and organizations such as sustainability. Studying how university students perceive sustainability in organizations can reveal guidelines for decision-making and actions in HEIs. There fore, the objective of this study is to verify which factors and variables impact the perception of students about the sustainability of organizations. A Survey was conducted with students of an HEI in south of Brazil. Data collection was performed through a questionnaire and a valid sample of 895 respondents was obtained. The results show the positive impact of the factors Environmental and Sustainable Aspects, Social, Ethical and Corporate Governance. It is concluded that the elements that form these factors generate guidelines for theim provement of sustainability practices.

Abstract Technology-intensive industries in China have developed rapidly since its economic reform. This article examines the role of higher education institutions (HEI s) in science and technology (S&T) in innovation and the development of technology-intensive industries in China. First, it illustrates the evolution and current status of S&T education at HEI s and their relationship to enterprises and science parks that led to China’s innovation and technological development. Second, it reveals the government’s role in promoting S&T education at HEI s and strengthening the relationship between universities and enterprises. Finally, it derives policy implications for developing countries in light of China’s experience.

A disaster communication plan for Higher Education Institutions in the Island Province of Occidental Mindoro, Philippines

Natural disasters, as they impede development and exacerbate poverty, have been the foremost concern of developing countries such as the Philippines. With this, the Philippine Disaster Risk Reduction Management Act (RA 10121) highlights the role of Higher Education Institutions (HEIs) in disaster resiliency and requires the incorporation of disaster communication in their institutions. Since disaster communication is considered to be one of the most valuable assets during disasters, academic institutions are provided visibility, credibility, and concrete direction to address chaos and confusion and to secure the safety of their stakeholders. The study created Safeguard Against Natural Disasters of Academes Through Actions (SANDATA), a disaster communication plan for HEIs in Occidental Mindoro to provide disaster communication strategies that can be used by them in securing a disaster-resilient academic environment. The output of this study was materialized using factor and thematic analysis and through the 300 respondents assigned for the quantitative data and 30 respondents assigned for the qualitative data. These findings influenced the disaster communication strategies employed by HEIs under the disaster stages of the Crisis Emergency Risk Communication (CERC) Theory, stakeholders' identified communication challenges as experienced by them, and their recommendations for improving the existing strategies of their institutions.
