The Influence of Workload on Burnout of Nurses at Sele Be Solu Provincial General Hospital, Sorong City During the Period of Endemic Transition of Covid-19 Through Role Stress as a Mediator

This study aims to analyze the influence of workload on nurse burnout at the Sele Be Solu Regional General Hospital, Sorong City during the transition period of the endemic Covid-19 through role stress as an intermediary. This research uses quantitative methods. The population in this study is all the nurses at the Sele Be Solu Regional General Hospital, Bandar Sorong, totaling 133 nurses. The number of samples was calculated using the Slovin formula with an error tolerance of 5℅, thus obtaining a sample size of 100 nurses. Data collection was carried out using a questionnaire, then the data was processed using the SEM PLS program. The results of the research show that workload has a positive and significant effect on burnout of Nurses at the Sele Be Solu Regional General Hospital Sorong City, workload has a positive and significant effect on role stress for Nurses at the Sele Be Solu Regional General Hospital Sorong City, and role stress has a positive and significant effect. on the burnout of Nurses at the Sele Be Solu Regional General Hospital Sorong City, and role stress has a positive and significant influence on the influence of workload on the burnout of Nurses at the Sele Be Solu Regional General Hospital Sorong City.

From Stress to Screen: Understanding Cyberloafing through Cognitive and Affective Pathways.

This investigation delves into the pervasive yet insufficiently examined phenomenon of "cyberloafing", characterized by employees engaging in non-work-related internet activities during office hours. Despite its frequent occurrence in contemporary work environments, the fundamental mechanisms underpinning cyberloafing remain largely uncharted. This study uses the conservation of resources theory and the cognitive-affective personality system framework to demystify the relationship between role stress and cyberloafing. We developed a dual-path model to assess the mediating roles of perceived insider status and emotional exhaustion. Employing SPSS and Smart PLS for data analysis, our research sampled 210 corporate employees. The findings reveal that role stress predicts perceived insider status and emotional exhaustion significantly. Notably, while perceived insider status negatively correlates with cyberloafing, emotional exhaustion shows a positive correlation. These factors mediate the relationship between role stress and cyberloafing, underscoring a multifaceted dynamic. Our results provide new theoretical insights into the mechanisms of employee counterproductive behavior, specifically in the context of cyberloafing, and broaden our understanding of its determinants. This study illuminates theoretical nuances and offers practical implications for managerial strategies and future scholarly inquiries into organizational behavior.

Beyond Role Conflict and Ambiguity: A Global Measure of Role Stress among South African School Teachers

Background. Role stress is linked to reduced work performance, diminished organizational commitment, increased intention to leave a job, and negative physical and mental health effects. Given the significant implications of role stress, researchers have sought to understand and quantify the concept. The Role Conflict and Ambiguity (RCA) scales are widely utilized in job stress research as the predominant measurement tools. They were originally conceptualized as consisting of two independent dimensions: role conflict and role ambiguity. Objective. This study advances the validation research of the RCA scales by exploring its dimensionality through Mokken Scale Analysis (MSA) and Classical Test Theory (CTT). Method. South African school teachers responded to the RCA scales, Maslach Burnout Inventory, and Teaching Satisfaction Scale. Confirmatory Factor Analysis (CFA) and MSA were employed for data analysis. Results. The research determined that a second-order model provided the optimal fit, indicating that role ambiguity and role conflict are subordinate dimensions within the overarching construct of role stress. Conclusion. The findings from the CFA and supplementary bifactor indices reinforce the view that the instrument comprises 13 items, which assess a general dimension of role stress along with two sub-dimensions: role conflict and role ambiguity. Such specificity may lead to more effective strategies to mitigate role-related stress, thereby enhancing overall employee well-being, job satisfaction, and organizational productivity.

Food insecurity, poor diet, and metabolic measures: The roles of stress and cortisol

Food insecurity is highly prevalent and linked to poorer diet and worse metabolic outcomes. Food insecurity can be stressful, and could elicit chronic psychological and physiological stress. In this study, we tested whether stress could be used to identify those at highest risk for worse diet and metabolic measures from food insecurity. Specifically, we hypothesized that cortisol (a physiological marker of stress) and perceived psychological stress would amplify the link between food insecurity and hyperpalatable food intake as well as metabolic measures. In a sample of 624 Black and White women aged 36–43 who participated in the NHLBI Growth and Health Study's midlife assessment, we assessed associations between food insecurity with hyperpalatable food intake (high fat + high sodium foods; high fat + high sugar foods; and high carbohydrate + high sodium foods), and metabolic measures (fasting glucose, insulin resistance, and waist circumference). We found that food insecurity was associated with higher levels of perceived stress (R2 = 0.09), and greater intake of high fat + high sugar (hyperpalatable) foods (R2 = 0.03). In those with higher cumulative cortisol (as indexed by hair cortisol), food insecurity was associated with higher levels of fasting glucose. Neither cortisol nor perceived stress moderated any other relationships, and neither variable functioned as a mediator in sensitivity analyses. Given these largely null findings, further research is needed to understand the role stress plays in the chronic health burdens of food insecurity.

MSW program directors in the United States: a scoping survey of responsibilities, preparation, and support

ABSTRACT A survey of Master of Social Work (MSW) program directors in the United States investigated their current role including their environment, tasks and preparation, and support. Most respondents were untenured when they assumed the role, only 20% were head of their unit, and few had received any training. Despite working an average of 50 hours a week, lack of time for scholarship and managing competing priorities were top stressors, while joys included their students and colleagues. Respondents identified their top training needs as conflict management, their role as middle managers, and finance-related topics. While the vast majority felt supported by their colleagues and their administration, a number of those with marginalized gender and racial identities experienced difficulties, both within and outside of their program, due to these identities. These data indicate a precarious state of the preparedness of MSW program leadership. Role stressors may place tenure-track program directors at risk of not attaining promotion as time for scholarship may be lost to administrative responsibilities, while non-tenured individuals may be ill-positioned to advocate for their program. Providing adequate training and support, especially for those with marginalized identities, is needed to ensure a solid MSW program director workforce.

The Effect of Role Stress on Burnout in IT Support

The widespread digitalization in society has resulted in technological advances in various fields growing rapidly so the number of workers in the field of Information and Communication Technology is increasing. However, it cannot be denied that the burden and demands of work in the IT field are very heavy and might cause burnout. The research aims to find out whether there is an influence of the multidimensional construct of role stress on burnout in IT Support workers. This research uses a quantitative correlational approach using simple linear regression analysis and multiple linear regression. 140 IT support workers aged 21 – 35 years who had experience in the IT field for at least 1 year participated in this study. The result of this study revealed that there is a positive and significant influence on the role of stress on burnout. The role ambiguity and role overflow dimensions have a positive effect on burnout, but the role conflict dimension does not affect burnout.

Assessing the relationship between information overload, role stress, and teachers’ job performance: Exploring the moderating effect of self-efficacy

The integrated technologies’ role has increased at educational institutes, and multiple information resources have increased the phenomenon of information overload and role stress among teachers. This study investigated the relationship between information overload, role stress, and teachers’ job performance. Additionally, explored the moderating effect of teachers’ self-efficacy. This study employed a quantitative research design and used a survey approach. Data was collected from 284 teachers working in the public –sector primary, middle and secondary schools. IBM SPSS and SmartPLS 3.0 were used to analyze the data. Findings indicated that information overload has a negative direct effect on teachers’ job performance. Further, information overload has a positive and significant impact on role stress that decreases job performance. Moreover, the mediator ‘role ambiguity’ has significantly mediated the effect of information overload on the job performance. However, the impact of information overload was not passing through the mediator role conflict. Self-efficacy has a moderating effect on the relationship between information overload, role stress, and job performance. Additionally, this study has also discussed theoretical and practical implications.

Role ambiguity as an antecedent to workplace bullying: Hostile work climate and supportive leadership as intermediate factors

Previous studies have shown role stress to be an important antecedent of workplace bullying. The present study investigated when and how a long-term effect of role ambiguity on exposure to bullying may be present. Based on the work environment hypothesis, we hypothesized that (a) there is a long-term effect of role ambiguity on exposure of bullying, (b) that this relationship is mediated by hostile work climate, and (c) moderated by supportive leadership. Using a three-wave design, with a time lag of 41–45 months, we showed support for all three hypotheses. The study underscores the importance of clear work-related roles as well as the importance of supportive leadership to prevent the onset of bullying following role stress and hostile climates.

The Association between Psychosocial Stressors and Gestational Weight Gain: Analysis of the National Pregnancy Risk Assessment Monitoring System (PRAMS) Results from 2012 to 2015.

Both psychosocial stress and gestational weight gain are independently associated with adverse maternal and fetal outcomes. Studies of the association between psychosocial stress and gestational weight gain (GWG) have yielded mixed results. The objective of this study was to evaluate the association between psychosocial stress and GWG in a large population-based cohort. Data from the nationally representative Pregnancy Risk Assessment Monitoring System (PRAMS) Phase 7 questionnaire 2012-2015 was utilized. Maternal psychosocial stress was assessed through response to questions designed to examine four domains of psychosocial stress (i.e., traumatic, financial, emotional, partner-related) three months prior to or during pregnancy. GWG was categorized using pre-pregnancy BMI and total GWG into inadequate, adequate, or excessive according to the Institute of Medicine's GWG guidelines. Multinomial logistic regression was used to evaluate the association between psychosocial stressors and adequacy of GWG. Analyses took into account complex survey design. All respondents who delivered ≥ 37 weeks gestation with GWG information available were included in the analysis (n = 119,183). After adjusting for confounders, patients who reported financial stress were more likely to experience excessive versus adequate GWG (RRR 1.09 [95%CI: 1.02-1.17]). Exposure to any of the stressor groups did not significantly increase the risk of inadequate GWG. This large, population-based study revealed that among pregnant people in the US, exposure to financial stress is associated with higher risk of excessive GWG. Understanding the role stress plays in GWG will help to inform initiatives targeting this important aspect of prenatal care.

Intragroup conflict: Role stressors and work attitude

Intragroup conflict can adversely affect employee work attitudes and performance. Vagueness regarding conflicting roles and demands can lead to tension and conflict among group members, which it is can reduce positive work attitudes, such as job satisfaction, commitment to the organization, and job engagement. This study aims to determine the role of intragroup conflict in mediating effect of role stressor on work attitude. This research was conducted on contract education personnel in Udayana University with a sample of 87 employees. The samples were collected by using proportionate random sampling. Data were analyzed using Structural Equation Modeling (SEM) with the Partial Least Square (PLS) approach. The result showed that intragroup conflict was not able to mediate the effect of role stressors on work attitude performance (no mediation). These results showed that even though employees feel they know what to do for every aspect of the job, employees still feel that there are often differences of opinion in the workplace. But that does not degrade employees' strong sense of organizational ownership. Employees still love their jobs and still make sure tasks are completed properly.

The findings reveal that emotional intelligence and relationship building are paramount for creating a collaborative and innovative work environment. Empowerment and inclusivity foster team initiative and diversity, although caution is warranted to mitigate potential negative impacts on role stress and unethical behavior. Recognition and appreciation of team contributions contribute to morale and motivation, while continuous learning encourages adaptability and growth. Precise goal setting and efficient communication are foundational for focused and responsive team dynamics, while delegation and trust-building strategies promote collaboration and cohesion. Finally, prioritizing employee well-being ensures a positive and healthy work environment conducive to sustained engagement. The study contributes valuable insights into leadership characteristics vital for constructing teams' optimal functioning and management. Modeling the influence of management control system and ambidextrous behavior on B2B customer relationships: a job demand-resource perspective

PurposeService–sales ambidexterity (SSA) offers sales managers crucial information about dealing with customer service failures through an effective management control system. This study aims to scrutinize the relationships among SSA, salesforce control system, salesperson’s role stressors and service recovery performance (SRP) in the business-to-business (B2B) context.Design/methodology/approachAn analysis is conducted based on survey data collected from 586 B2B sales employees participating in an extensive survey. Structural equation modeling is used to analyze the proposed hypotheses.FindingsEmpirical findings suggest that behavior-based control harms SSA. On the other hand, outcome-based control has a positive impact on SSA. The research outcomes further disclose that SSA positively impacts salesperson role conflict and emotional fatigue, whereas emotional fatigue negatively impacts SRP. Salesperson resilience notably moderates the association between SSA and emotional fatigue.Originality/valueThe study addresses there is a dearth of research on SSA applying the sales management control system. When studying about ambidexterity in sales context, many supervisory styles have been explored; however, to the best of the authors’ knowledge, this is the first systematic attempt to understand how sales management control systems play a role in SSA.

Effectiveness of Benson’s Relaxation Technique In Stressed PCOD Women

Background: Polycystic Ovary Syndrome (PCOS) is a prevalent endocrinological disorder in women, causing metabolic dysfunction and body composition changes. As of June 30, 2022, WHO estimates indicate over 116 million women (3.4%) globally are affected by PCOS. Stress, defined as worry and mental tension from difficult situations, is a major contributor to reproductive dysfunction. Reports increasingly highlight stress's role in PCOS manifestation. The study aims to assess the Benson relaxation technique's effectiveness in alleviating stress in women with PCOS. Aim: To determine the effectiveness of Benson's relaxation technique in stressed PCOD. Methodology: Study Design: Experimental study, Study setting: Dr. B.R. Ambedkar Medical College and Hospital, Department of Physiotherapy, Bangalore -560045 Sample design: Purposive sampling. Sample size: 30 patients. Result: A significant reduction in stress among PCOD women was observed with the use of Benson’s Relaxation Technique. The pre-perceived stress score before the technique was 22.63±5.26, decreasing to 18.23±5.98 post-intervention. The enhancement score was 4.40, with a t-value of 11.08. The analysis indicates a substantial stress reduction among PCOD women using Benson’s Relaxation Technique, as assessed through the Perceived Stress Scale (p<0.001). Conclusion: The study conclusively demonstrated the efficacy of Benson's Relaxation Technique in alleviating stress among women with PCOD. The analysis revealed a significant shift in stress levels, with 33.4% transitioning from high to moderate stress, 30.3% from moderate to low, and 30% maintaining moderate stress. Only 3.3% had low stress persisting, and the same percentage had persistent high stress. The pre-intervention stress score was 22.63526, decreasing to 18.2315.98 post-intervention, yielding a noteworthy enhancement score of 4.40. This signifies a statistically significant reduction in perceived stress (p<0.001), supported by a t-value of 11.08. KEYWORDS: Benson’s relaxation technique, PCOD, Perceived Stress Scale Stress.

A Study on the Effect of Role Stress, LMX and TMX on Organisational Citizenship Behaviour of Nurses and Their Mediation by Team Commitment

Nurses’ job of caring for critically ill patients requires demonstration of behaviour some of which may not be there in their job description. These voluntary behaviours without expectation of reward or favour are referred to as Organisational Citizenship Behaviour (OCB). Patient care is a teamwork, close and cooperative interaction for work within the team and with team leaders, that is, TMX (team-member exchange) and LMX (leader-member exchange), leads to a feeling of commitment known as team commitment and nurses are expected to display OCB to maintain their team membership. Job of nursing imbibes several factors that cause stress to the nurses; these stressors eventually lead to burnout. Stress and burnout harm patient care and particularly on their OCB. In total, 506 nurses from 5 hospitals of Kolkata participated in the study. Result showed that LMX and TMX significantly relate to OCB and nurses’ role stress negatively relates to the OCB of nurses. Team commitments fully mediate effect of nurses’ role stress on OCB of nurses and partially mediates the relationship between LMX and TMX with OCB. This study may be helpful to Healthcare Managers to devise appropriate strategies to enhance the OCB of nurses. Shortcomings of the study and scope for further research discussed.

Purpose: This study aimed to prevent the psychological burnout of counselors by focusing on
 depression, Psychasthenia, Social Introversion as individual dysfunctional emotions that increase the
 Job stress of counseling teachers, the effects of dysfunctional emotions on the Job stress, and verifying
 the moderating effects of coping strategies.
 Methods: A total of eighty-seven counselors who were engaged in counseling work in secondary
 schools were observed, and the moderating effect of coping strategies was verified in the relationship
 between dysfunctional emotions such as depression, compulsion, introversion, and Job stress.
 Results: First, the counselors’ dysfunctional emotions did not have a significant effect on role stress,
 but active and passive coping had a significant effect. In addition, interpersonal stress did not show
 a significant influence on both dysfunctional emotions and active coping, but passive coping had a
 positively signifi-cant effect. On the other hand, counseling job stress did not show any significant
 influence on both dysfunctional emotions, active coping, and passive coping. Second, the moderating
 effect of coping strategies on dysfunctional emotions and counseling job stress was verified.
 Conclusion: By verifying that the counselor can reduce the level of job stress by considering the
 individual's dysfunctional emotions and using coping strategies appropriately, implications were
 provided to prevent burn-out of both counselors and clients.

Objectives The purpose of this study was to identify the structural relationship among the gains and strains of mothers’ work-parenting balance with children in the sixth grade of elementary school and to explore how its rela-tionship changes through the influences of parenting stress, elementary school students' self-esteem, and grit on school adjustment. Methods A total of 769 pairs of mother-child data in the 13th wave of the Panel Study of Korea Children were ana-lyzed by using structural equation modeling. The measurement model verification was followed by the structural model verification, and the maximum likelihood method (ML) was used. Results The results of this study are as follows. First, the strains between mothers' work-family balance had a positive effect on parental life stress and parental role stress, and the gains of mothers' work-family balance had a negative effect on parental role stress. Also, parental role stress has a negative effect on children's self-esteem and grit, mother’s life stress did not shown any relationship with self-esteem, grit, and school adjustment. In ad-dition, it was confirmed that childrens’ self-esteem had a positive effect on grit and school adjustment, and grit had a positive effect on school adjustment. Second, the strains in work-family balance has a negative effect on school adjustment through the multiple mediators of parental role stress, self-esteem, and grit, and the gains of work-family balance has a positive effect on school adjustment through the multiple mediators of parent role stress, self-esteem, and grit. Conclusions This study suggests that the gains and strains of work-family balance affect the self-esteem, grit, and school adjustment of children through the mothers’ parental role stress. It implies that its important to reduce the parental role stress in order to help psychological stability and school adjustment of children.

Stressors–performance relationship in public accounting firms: a quasi-longitudinal study

PurposeThis study aims to examine the changes in the correlations between stressors and performance in French chartered and accounting firms.Design/methodology/approachThe linkages between role stressors and performance were analyzed through a quasi-longitudinal study of 476 chartered public accountants and trainee-chartered accountants surveyed before and after the busy season, using the partial least squares approach.FindingsOnly challenge appraisals are positively related to motivation before and after the 2018 busy season. Stress arousal is positively associated with burnout and physical symptoms. However, the associations between role ambiguity and conflict, and hindrance appraisals became insignificant after the busy season. The challenge appraisals–role ambiguity linkage persisted but reduced significantly. The burnout–performance association was insignificant in the two time periods.Practical implicationsA busy season with its increased challenge stressors has positive effects on performance through motivation but also negative effects through strains, which explains the observed insignificant net impact.Originality/valueThis quasi-longitudinal study first suggests the role of appraisals, motivation and physical symptoms as mediators of the effects of role stressors on performance. Then, it aids in the broad generalization of certain findings from previous studies. Finally, it demonstrates the applicability of the partial least squares approach, which has been hitherto under-used in behavioral accounting.

Employment conditions and mental health of overseas female migrant domestic workers in Hong Kong: a parallel mediation analysis

BackgroundFemale migrant domestic workers (MDW), approximately 8.5 million globally, often live in their employer’s home under vulnerable conditions. In Hong Kong, MDWs currently comprise 5% of the population. This study was conducted to assess the association between employment conditions and mental health, and the mediating roles stress and job satisfaction have, among female MDWs in Hong Kong.MethodsParticipants completed an online cross-sectional survey. A total of 1,965 survey were collected between August 2020 and August 2021. Questions in the survey were related to MDWs background information, employment conditions, stress, job satisfaction, and two mental health outcomes: anxiety and depression. An employment conditions score was created to assess the cumulative effect poor employment conditions had on mental health. A multicategorical parallel mediation analysis was used to assess the direct effect employment conditions have on mental health and the indirect effects through stress and job satisfaction.ResultsOverall, 17.7% of MDWs were reported to be suffering from anxiety and 30.8% from depression. An increase in poor employment conditions was statistically associated with an increase in both outcomes, while stress levels and job satisfaction mediated this association.ConclusionsThe findings call for increased scrutiny of employment conditions and mental well-being of MDWs.
