This research analyzes the figurative meanings in the lyrics of "Penyangkalan" by For Revenge, an Indonesian rock band, which reflects the emotional experiences of individuals trapped in toxic relationships. Previous studies indicate that figurative language in music can enhance understanding of trauma and psychological defense mechanisms. Yet, there remains a gap in literature examining the relationship between song lyrics and emotional experiences. This study aims to identify and analyze the use of figurative language in "Penyangkalan" lyrics and how these elements convey emotional messages related to toxic relationships. Using a descriptive qualitative approach with text analysis, the study examines the song lyrics through theme identification, pattern recognition, and meaning analysis, validated through triangulation techniques. The findings reveal that the lyrics employ various language styles, including metaphors, personification, and repetition, to portray the complexity of emotions and trauma in toxic relationships, ultimately serving as a mirror for emotional experiences while providing insights into broader psychological impacts in a social context.

Building Identity For New Bands: A Community Engagement Initiative For Rock Band "RedFlag" In The Alternative Rock Genre

The Community Service Program (CSP) aims to elevate RedFlag, an emerging alternative rock band, within the Indonesian rock scene. It focuses on brand development, visibility, performance opportunities, industry networking, music production, and community engagement. RedFlag has shown potential with their debut single “Bottle Down” and collaborations with CRYSTAGELLA, enhancing their industry connections. However, challenges include stagnant social media growth and recent lineup changes. CSP's approach includes building a strong brand identity, boosting online presence through targeted social media, and securing performance slots at venues and festivals. The program also facilitates networking with industry professionals, offers mentorship, and improves music production quality while promoting community engagement through local events. Continuous monitoring and feedback will ensure the effectiveness of these strategies, aiming to help RedFlag succeed in the competitive Indonesian music industry.

One of Poland’s leading literary figures, Grzegorz Wróblewski was born in Gdańsk in 1962, grew up in Warsaw, and moved to Copenhagen in 1985. Described by Marjorie Perloff as “the true poetic chronicler of our 21st century diaspora in all its absurdities and anxieties,”2 Wróblewski has published dozens of volumes of poetry, prose, and drama in Poland, as well as several books in Denmark and other countries. Active in the contemporary music scene, he has collaborated with several performers and musicians based in Europe, including Olga Magieres, Bobi Peru, Paweł “Kelner” Rozwadowski, and the punk rock band Deuter. As a visual artist, he has exhibited his paintings in various galleries in Denmark, Germany, England, and Poland. Exceptionally prolific and versatile, Wróblewski is no stranger to Anglophone readers. English translations of his poetry appear in several volumes, including my translations Kopenhaga (Zephyr Press, 2013), Zero Visibility (Phoneme Media/Deep Vellum, 2017), and Dear Beloved Humans: Selected Poems (Diálogos Books, 2023).

Blue Öyster Cult’s “Godzilla”: An American Kaiju Anthem

In 1978, the American hard rock band Blue Öyster Cult released the song “Godzilla” as the first single from the fifth studio album Spectres. Despite not registering on popular charts, it would eventually evolve into an iconic song of its era. “Godzilla” continues to receive airplay on classic rock stations, and it remains a staple of the band’s touring performances. In 2019, a cover of the song, more than forty years after its release, made its film debut in Godzilla: King of the Monsters. Though the song is primarily a tribute to the Japanese monster from which it gets its name, “Godzilla” also reflects the nuclear fear and paranoia of the 1970s Cold War era. “Godzilla’s” cultural impact, the song’s lyrics, the Cold War context in which it was written, and its connection to the kaiju films featuring the famous monster are examined. While this is the most popular and well-known song dedicated to Godzilla, it is not the only one. Other compositions have, but they have failed to achieve the iconic status that Blue Öyster Cult’s version has attained. This song has evolved into an unofficial anthem for the great monster.

Cry with the Promised Land: singing for nationalist and religious environmentalism amid Burma’s war

ABSTRACT As the planet’s ecological crisis deepens, what can music reveal about the shapes that environmentalism is taking across the world? This article shows that music is a sensory pathway into notions of nature and of saving nature in repressed and marginalised places. Drawing on ethnographic fieldwork since 2010 in the war-torn Burma–China–India borderlands, I explore a dissident rock band’s pioneering environmentalist song. The song’s Kachin Jinghpaw language lyrics talk of ecological destruction through a worldwide trope—‘nature is crying’—but express more specifically a nationalist and religious environmentalism. The song calls on Christian Kachin people to rescue a God-given national homeland, amid the broader album’s call for ethnonational resistance against a ‘colonising’ military regime in Burma (Myanmar). I explore the song’s lyrics and karaoke music video—line-by-line and scene-by-scene—as a way to sense both the logic and feeling of environmentalism emerging amid war.

Rocking in Kasba: “band” music, contemporary Bengali cinema, and Anjan Dutta’s lost Kolkatas

ABSTRACT With the gradual obsolescence of the lip-synched romantic duet, the sonic texture of Bengali popular cinema has transformed radically in the new millennium. One of the most remarkable components of the rise of the Original Soundtrack in Bengali film specifically has been the incorporation of local pop, folk, and rock bands, whose lyrics are written in Bengali but whose music retains a decidedly western flavour. This paper situates this relationship between cinema and what has traditionally been understood as ‘band’ music in Kolkata in a longer history of the city and its colonial and postcolonial musical cultures. With the incorporation of the pop/rock stars into the diegesis, the productive tensions between star and singer, visible and invisible bodies and voices have been overturned in recent years. Conversely, the music that is commissioned by these films now contribute to the bands’ larger discography and bring their music to a wider listening audience. In some of these films, musicians and bands appear as themselves, bringing together multi-modal sites of fandom and entertainment. Finally, this essay demonstrates that singer/songwriter/filmmaker/actor, Anjan Dutta’s oeuvre emerges as the canvas on which many of these developments come to be visible.

The Greatest Rock and Soul Band in the World? The Rolling Stones, genre and race

Abstract The Rolling Stones played a core role in establishing the generic conventions of rock. A key ideological element of this was the band's reverential dedication to the blues and the importance of the blues to their musical development. However, what is much less recognised is the influence of soul on the band's sound. By looking at the band's repertoire, composition and performing style, this paper explores the influence that soul, particularly Southern soul, had on the band's formative years and argues that, in many ways, they have adopted the aesthetic conventions of soul, rather than rock, for the majority of their career. Rethinking The Stones’ style in this way may help us better understand their position in the rock canon, while also encouraging careful interrogation of the racialised division of rock and soul that emerged in the late 1960s.

MARILLION’S CLUTCHING AT STRAWS

This research provides a comprehensive and interpretative narratological analysis of the album “Clutching at Straws” released by the British progressive rock band Marillion in 1987. It explores the lyrical narrative, central themes, musicality, and structure of the album, as well as the historical, emotional, and artistic context of the band at the time the work was recorded and released. To achieve this, we draw upon the theoretical framework of authors such as Herman (2009), Genette (1972,1997), Reuter (2002), Bakhtin (1975), and Graudeault (2004). We believe that the narrative depth and emotional charge of the album make it a captivating topic for narratological analysis, offering a possibility for investigation into the power of narrative in the musicological context.

R-C-D-F machine learning method to measure for geological structures in 3D point cloud of rock tunnel face

This study introduces an innovative Roughness-CANUPO-Dip-Facet (R-C-D-F) methodology for the measurement of dip angle and direction in geological rock facets. The R-C-D-F method is distinguished by its comprehensive four-step approach, encompassing filtration through roughness analysis, CANUPO analysis, and dip angle filtration, followed by facet segmentation as the measurement step. To achieve precise and efficient results, the method specifically focuses on isolating joint embedment, achieved by systematically filtering out joint bands. This selective filtration process ensures that measurements are conducted exclusively on relevant joint embedment points. The novelty of this methodology lies in its capability to automatically eliminate joint bands while retaining the joint embedment points, facilitating precise measurements without manual intervention. Three site models were evaluated using the R-C-D-F method, alongside four different techniques for measuring dip angle and direction: plane fitting, normal vector conversion, facet segmentation, and compass measurements. The results demonstrated that all methods accurately calculated the dip angle, with an accuracy ranging from 97 % to 99.4 %. The facet segmentation method was selected as the optimal measurement tool due to its automatic nature and capacity to provide accurate results without manual intervention. Furthermore, the optimal local neighbour radius (LNR) for calculating normal vectors was determined, with findings indicating that a larger LNR value enhances accuracy but also increases computational time. A verification was conducted to estimate the dip angle used for filtering and discarding additional points representing joint rock bands, with the optimal value being 45, 30, and 45 degrees for the respective sites.The R-C-D-F method effectively detected and eliminated 100 % of joint band points while retaining 81 % of joint embedment points, and the facet segmentation method provided accurate dip angle and direction measurements for each joint embedment segment. These outcomes underscore the robustness and precision of the R-C-D-F method in geological engineering and rock stability studies.

Exploring authenticity meanings in the global-local continuum: semiotic insights from the Måneskin case

PurposeThis article explores brand positioning and authenticity within the global-local continuum, utilizing the evolution of the Italian rock band, Måneskin, as a case study.Design/methodology/approachEmploying Greimas’s (1987) semiotic framework, I analyze social media and media articles on Måneskin’s success, unveiling consumer perceptions of global, local and intermediate brand positionings and related authenticity dimensions. I particularly uncover a narrative centered on “global” versus “local” brand positioning and their counterparts (i.e. “not global” and “not local”), forming a semiotic square.FindingsIn the “global” perception, the band is evaluated in terms of conforming to global standards, while, in the “local” understanding, the emphasis shifts to connections to local roots. In the “glocalization” perspective (global and local), the band’s activities are assessed concerning an integration between global conformity and local connections. The “glalienation” viewpoint (neither global nor local) is related to consistency, in the sense of being unique and avoiding a commitment to either global or local values. The data also highlight issues of inconsistency regarding brand positioning’s contradictions, such as the band’s incoherently merging local and non-local elements.Originality/valueThe proposed structural semiotics approach enriches previous theories by examining authenticity within global-local dynamics, offering insights into various authenticity dimensions and their interplay. It underlines shifts in authenticity perceptions and challenges binary brand positioning, advocating for strategic placement across the global-local continuum. Moreover, it emphasizes leveraging cultural elements and semiotics to effectively communicate authenticity.

Notebooking Embodied Sonico-Musical Experience

Abstract: This essay argues that notebooking practices—regular, routine writing about everyday experience—focused on the felt experiences of sonic / musical activity can be used to generate new forms of becoming and being. To do so, I begin with how such notebooking constitutes a daily, habitual, and revelatory practice. I then describe how notebooking is a potentially unique means of exploring the value of writing about music. Building on this potential, I look to how the rhythmic dimensions of sonico-musical experience can create interesting forms of resonance. Finally, in way of illustration, I offer a case study of my own notebooking focused on the resonant rhythms that have appeared at the nexus of my playing drums in a part-time touring rock band while carrying out my full-time work as a composition professor.

"The healing link in an errant chain of thought". Modernism, avant-garde, and the critically affirmative irony of bob hund bob hund could be called a «post-rock band» that investigates what it really means to be a rock band – or, as they call themselves: a pop orchestra. How do you put together the given components drum, bass, guitar and keyboard in constellations that make something new appear? In trying to respond to this question, this article points to bob hund’s roots in modernist avant-garde aesthetics, and examines what such winding connections between different traditions might mean. Aesthetic practices such as decontextualization, irony, anacoluthon wordplay, and lists change when they are used in new and different historical contexts. If high modernism was reduced to form, and Duchampian neodadaism to lifestyle choices, then bob hund opens new possibilities for aesthetic practices in today's anthropocenic hypercapitalism.

Band Chemistry: Interpersonal and Group Dynamics in Rock Music

ABSTRACT The subject of band chemistry, or the interpersonal and collective dynamics within a rock band and their effects on longevity and musical creativity, has received little explicit scholarly attention. Drawing primarily on the words of musicians, this paper explores band chemistry in all its fragility and fickleness, easily disrupted and occasionally fortified by the ever-evolving interpersonal relationships of band members, commercial success or not, management and managerial change, producers, life on the road, drug and alcohol abuse, and the distribution of writing credits and royalties, among others. The paper argues that the intangible quality of band chemistry is most responsible, for good or bad, for the longevity of bands, and a major factor in their creativity while together.

Classification of Fall Out Boy Eras

This paper explored the use of machine learning techniques to differentiate between two different musical eras of the same rock band, including the technique of Logistic Regression. Logistic regression (LR) is a widely used statistical modeling method for binary classification in supervised machine learning. It is often used to predict whether a given event belongs to one of two categories. The process helps data scientists understand which variables are good predictors of class membership. Applications of logistic regression include loan classification in the financial industry and predicting susceptibility to disease in the medical field. In this particular project, a dataset was constructed using data from Spotify and Genius consisting of songs and lyrics written by the band Fall Out Boy. A logistic regression model was developed from scratch to classify the songs and lyrics into one of two eras of the band: before their 2009 hiatus and afterward. The study aimed to determine if a computer could differentiate between the two eras. The model was also tested against other binary classification algorithms, including Random Forest and Support Vector Machines.

Singing from the same hymnbook: South Asian Canadian solidarity in the long sixties in British Columbia

ABSTRACT This essay breaks new ground in writing the history of the long sixties by bringing in a strand of the Third World diasporic activism shaped by transnational mobility. It alludes to the role of the Naxalite movement in politicizing the youth of the Panjab, many of whom moved to Canada in the late 1960s and 1970s encouraged by changes in Canada’s immigration policies. This new wave of immigrants was confronted with racism and labour exploitation upon arrival. In response, they quickly formed new Left-wing organizations to defend their rights. The literary association of progressive Panjabi writers in British Columbia and other places was one such institution. It directly involved itself in political and cultural activism, besides literary activities by crossing racial and communal boundaries to create intercommunity solidarities. These Panjabi writers were also chroniclers of the global consciousness of their times as well as the local histories of resistance by their diasporic community. Through text and performance, their intercommunity cultural solidarity activism organically connected them to an older North American radical tradition of the anarcho-syndicalist Wobblies. The archive of the literary production of progressive Panjabi writers has been used in the essay alongside the video interviews recorded by the author with members of Panjabi theatre groups, musicians of a former rock band, a visual artist and photographer, and the founder of a local folk music festival. It brings to the fore new voices, perspectives, and experiences that shaped the intercommunity cultural solidarity activism of the long sixties in British Columbia.

ABSTRACT This article explores the legacy act of Calcutta’s first progressive/folk Bengali rock band, Moheener Ghoraguli, founded in 1975 during a time of societal unrest. Emerging as a focal point of urban youth culture, their music, rooted in regional language, and drawing on the 1960s global rock phenomenon and Bengali folk music, fostered a sense of community among the urban Calcutta youth. Unpacking the legacy of Moheener Ghoraguli sheds light on cultural heritage, memory, and peak musical experiences in urban Bengal.

Features of metaphors in song discourse based on the texts of rock musicians

This article is devoted to the study of some linguistic and stylistic features of the English and Russian-language song discourse. The study is based on examples taken from the rock band songs. The lyrics of the songs were analyzed for the use of such a linguistic means of expression as metaphor. Research has shown that both Russian and English-speaking authors often use this linguo-stylistic means of expressiveness during the writing of their musical works to give euphony, a special expressive coloring and to convey their emotional state. It was revealed that song lyrics are an important element of musical culture and can convey to listeners not only musical, but also socio-political and philosophical ideas, while using various metaphorical constructions to give a vivid image. The article considers the impact on the imagination, emotions of the Russian and English-speaking listener through the use of metaphor and how this linguistic means draws attention to a certain feature of the described phenomenon and reflects the author’s attitude to the text.

PUNK, THE HOLOCAUST, AND THE RAMONES

This paper examines the intersection of the Holocaust and the Ramones as the first U.S. punk rock band. Firstly, the paper elaborates on punk as a genre of music that emerged virtually at the same time in England and the United States as a reaction to the post-war socio-po- litical climate. The paper then focuses on a group of young men who all grew up in New York City and whose music spoke directly to the disillusioned American post-war youth culture – the Ramones. The Ramones were all either Jews or had parents who had survived the Holocaust. Thus, the paper examines the extent to which the Ramones were affected by the trauma of the Holocaust and how they tried to work through it. ‘Blitzkrieg Bop’ and ‘Today Your Love, Tomorrow the World’, both tracks on their self-titled album released in 1976, are thoroughly discussed.
