The Implementation of LAUDATO SI as the Embodiment of Integral Ecology in Atma Jaya Yogyakarta University

The wrong paradigm towards self and others leads humans to individual pride and collective egoism. Technocratic and mechanical views can obscure human dignity, because humans are considered as objects and usability values only. Anthropocentric, mechanistic and technocratic paradigms make individuals alienated from others, both with each other, as well as with other creatures and entities. This research aims to explore the Encyclical Laudato Si and its implementation in Atma Jaya Yogyakarta University (UAJY). As a university, UAJY plays an important role in creating a catholic education that respects human dignity, the value of interconnectedness and builds an integral ecology. The results of the research are expected to be more effective in realising the encyclic in Atma Jaya Yogyakarta University. This research uses a qualitative method, and the approach used was a mixture of library research and field research. The material object of the research is policy, while the formal object is moral philosophy.

Humanistic foundations of the legal system: dialectics of theory and practice in the conditions of modern challenges

The article is devoted to the study of the principle of humanism as the fundamental basis of the modern legal state. The author examines the historical development of the concept of humanism from the ideas of ancient philosophers to modern concepts of human rights, emphasizing its key role in the formation of the legal system and state policy. The work analyzes the concept of «principle» and its meaning in the legal context. The author emphasizes the systematic nature of the principles of law, their interrelation and hierarchy, which is critically important for understanding their role in the formation and functioning of the legal system. Special attention is paid to the principle of humanism as a cross-cutting element of the legal system. Its key aspects are considered: recognition of the inherent value of each person, respect for human dignity, provision of conditions for the realization of rights and freedoms, striving for the common good. The author emphasizes that humanism in law is not only an ethical ideal, but also a practical guideline for law-making and law enforcement. The article also examines certain aspects of the dialectical opposition between humanism and anti­humanism, which allows for a deeper understanding of the dynamic nature of humanistic principles and their role in the development of the rule of law. The author emphasizes the need for constant critical review of existing norms and institutions for their compliance with humanistic ideals. An important aspect of the research is consideration of the relationship between the level of moral maturity of society and the implementation of the principle of humanism. The author claims that in a morally developed society, respect for the rights and freedoms of the individual becomes an organic component of everyday life, which creates a harmonious coexistence of ethical principles and legal norms. In the conclusions, the author emphasizes the need not only for formal enshrining of humanistic principles in legislation, but also for their practical implementation in all spheres of social life. This requires constant improvement of the legal system and state administration in order to maximally satisfy the needs and interests of citizens, which is a key feature of a truly legal and democratic state.

Ethical Aspects of Human Genome Research in Sports-A Narrative Review.

Human genome research in sports raises complex ethical considerations regarding the intersection of genetics and athletic performance. Pursuing genetic enhancements must uphold fairness, equality, and respect for human dignity. This narrative review explores the ethical dimensions of human genome research in sports, its potential implications on athletes, and the integrity of sports. As a narrative review, this study synthesizes the existing literature and expert insights to examine the ethical aspects of human genome research in sports. This study extensively examined the current literature on genetics, sports performance, ethical concerns, human rights, and legal regulations within the European context. The literature was searched using the SPORTDiscus, Scopus, Google Scholar, and PubMed databases. Exploring human genome research in sports reveals significant ethical implications, including potential genetic discrimination, impacts on human rights, and creating a genetic underclass of athletes. There are also definite benefits surrounding genetic testing. In conclusion, this review contends that integrating ethical considerations into developing and applying genetic technologies in sports is crucial to upholding fundamental principles of fairness, equality, and respect for human dignity. It stresses the importance of open and inclusive dialogue about the potential consequences of genetic advancements on athletic performance, future generations, and the integrity of sports.

Defining Work Ethics in the Modern Labour Market: Ethical Competence Criteria Emerging from Technological Development and Moral-Theological Documents

Ethical competence is not an easily defined concept, especially with respect to the job requirements resulting from new technologies and digital transformation of the economy. The present paper attempts to define the competence profile of a worker in knowledge-based economy and workplaces using automation and digital technologies, but in relation to sources from encyclicals and other moral-theological documents. This profile includes specific ethical criteria, which are relevant and valid regardless of the times. Moreover, in the face of technological progress in modern economies, these criteria seem to have the power to influence the effectiveness of work processes. Thus, features such as respect for human dignity, responsibility, honesty, quality, courage, trustworthiness, justice, and secrecy should be considered as key for recruitment and evaluation of human capital in the modern labour market. As these are values mentioned in moral-theological documents, including papal encyclicals, they refer to the essence of human work and ensure that no man is reified.

ETHICAL ASPECTS OF GENE EDITING IN BIOLOGY AND MEDICINE

This article is devoted to the analysis of the ethical aspects of gene editing in biology and medicine. It examines the complex moral issues that arise in the context of the use of modern genetic engineering technologies to change genetic information in humans and other organisms. The main focus is on issues of safety, justice, respect for human dignity, as well as the consequences for the environment and biodiversity. The article emphasizes the need for a reasoned and responsible approach to gene editing, taking into account high standards of ethics and legal norms, in order to ensure the development of this field for the benefit of man and society.

A Fair Trial Perspective on Albanian Law No. 19/2016 “On Additional Measures for Public Security”: Aligning with European Human Rights Standards

This study critically assesses Albania's Law No. 19/2016 "On Additional Measures for Public Security" against the European Convention on Human Rights (ECHR), focusing on privacy and the right to a fair trial. Through comparative legal analysis, it juxtaposes Law No. 19/2016 with ECHR provisions and the European Court of Human Rights (ECtHR) jurisprudence, examining the law’s alignment with human rights norms, especially regarding surveillance. The analysis uncovers substantial discrepancies, particularly in the law’s approach to public surveillance and the protection of individual rights, indicating a need for significant legal reform in Albania. The paper proposes amendments to better align national legislation with ECHR standards, advocating for clearer surveillance regulations, enhanced privacy protections, and adherence to fair legal processes. It champions a balanced public security strategy that respects human dignity and freedom, aligning with European human rights principles. Empirical study on respect for human dignity

Even if the legal system has a clear regulation regarding the conduct of the criminal process, in the application of which the principle of human dignity must be respected, we cannot say that this principle of human dignity cannot or has not been violated. The legislative shortcomings must be removed so that there is no possibility of taking advantage (abuse of authority). They can be considered fundamental defects that can affect the decisions of the courts. The examination and analysis of the normative framework will be presented in order to comply with and implement some procedural guarantees of protection and respect for human dignity within the evidentiary procedures. So said, the result of the research resides, on the one hand, in the systematization of the works in the field and the laws in force, with the highlighting of the most important ideas that refer to the object of study but, at the same time, also an attempt to analyze the aspects their positive and critical aspects, formulating their own ideas regarding respect for the principle of human dignity. On the other hand, practical aspects of the violation of the principle of human dignity are addressed in order to highlight its particularities in practice, the legal bodies. The conducted study thus allows establishing the directions and trends of the procedural-criminal policy promoted along the lines of ensuring and realizing the right to respect the principle of human dignity.

Examining Domestic Violence Under Nigerian Law and Islamic Law

The paper examined domestic violence under Nigerian law and Islamic Law. Domestic violence involves infliction of physical, sexual, or psychological harm by one spouse on the other. To achieve the aim and objectives of this research, the meaning, nature and causes of domestic violence were briefly discussed. The paper adopted a doctrinal research method by conducting an in-depth analysis of the Violence Against Persons (Prohibition) Act, 2015, some Qur’anic provisions, prophetic traditions and juristic opinions relating to the topic. The paper critically examined and analyzed Chapter 4, verse 34 of the Holy Qur’an to find out whether or not its provision permits, condones or endorses domestic violence against women. The study found that this Qur’anic verse does not encourage, condone, endorse or permit domestic violence in whatever form. It further found that the beating mentioned in the verse is a non-violent symbolic gesture. The major findings are that Islam prohibits and condemns any form of domestic violence against women, and the principles of compassion, mercy, and respect for human dignity are central to Islamic teaching. The paper recommended collaborative efforts of the government and religious leaders to campaign against and condemn domestic violence in whatever form and all ramifications.

Reimagining Ethical Leverage in Technology for Peaceful Synodality: A Bioethics of Synodality with Technology

This paper seeks to reimagine ethical leverage in technology for peaceful synodality (the term peaceful synodality is coined to mean a synodality that welcomes participation and inclusion of people from different backgrounds and views without compromising the truth and respecting their dignity and journeying together) through the lens of the bioethics of synodality with technology. The concept of this paper is that technology can be leveraged ethically to promote peaceful synodality in the Catholic Church and that such an approach to technology is rooted in reimagining a bioethics of synodality that emphasize the need for journeying hand in hand with the speed at which technological advancement moves in order to enhance ethical decision-making processes. Ethics has moved at a different pace than technology, especially in matters involving human life. Ethics has been viewed as problematic in technology, especially where science wants to be neutral, but rethinking ethics as a companion of emerging technologies will be helpful in directing the ethical uptake of technology. To argue this thesis, the paper will employ a review of relevant literature while presenting the theological and ethical perspectives of synodality. By and large, an interdisciplinary approach will be employed where various disciplines play a key role. Such methodology advances the theme of reimagining Catholic ethics by offering a fresh perspective on the ethical implications of technology in the context of synodality. By emphasizing the importance of journeying together through enhanced ethical guidelines for proper decision-making and by exploring how technology can respect human rights and dignity among other values, this paper contributes to a broader conversation about how Catholic ethics can be reimagined in light of technological developments. Ultimately, this paper argues that a bioethics of synodality with technology can offer a vision for technology that is grounded in Catholic social teaching that promotes universally accepted human dignity and the common good. A cross-cutting method will also be used, given that ethics has basically constant principles, yet technology keeps on changing. Reimagining ethics means studying the advancement brought about by biotechnology and seeing to what degree human beings are affected in their basic rights and the risks versus the benefits brought about by the same. The assumption is that decisions made regarding the ethics of various technologies will be at par with the rate at which new technologies emerge and are employed. What is of vital importance is that ethics can have the power to journey together with technology, not as an adversary but in synodality. Reimagining ethics means being ever alert in the developing technologies that serve humanity so that in consultation with various experts, the best practices can be embraced within the ethical guidelines for the common good. The outcome of this research is that reimagining Catholic ethics involves listening to the needs of humanity and how technology is bringing solutions to them. Participating in bioethical debates, training on bioethics and listening to experts in various fields will enable a critical, analytical and pneumatological discernment of how ethical decisions on frontier technologies can benefit non-humans and humans.

Human dignity and autonomy in medicoethical decisions at the end of life

Respect of human dignity is an unquestionable part of daily clinical routine as well as of evaluations in medical ethics. Some aspects of human dignity are asubject of transformation in the course of alifetime. If the ability to form a will is reduced, it might be difficult to satisfy the individual perception of adignified treatment, which is of particular interest in terminal care. As illustrated by the presented case report, moral problems can arise when the patient's present verbal or non-verbal expressions are opposed to what is documented or what is estimated by dependants to be the individual's will. In clinical decision-making processes, the determination of the will via an advance directive can be overstated, which can go so far that human dignity is reduced to autonomy. Aconcept of dignity reduced to autonomy misses the point not only of adignity-centered medical care but also of shared decision-making. In situations at the end of life other aspects, such as authenticity or self-actualization should be considered when respecting the individual's dignity. Medicine should as such not marginalize death but provide acare based on principles that focus on human interaction and respect for acomprehensive concept of dignity.

Police Victimization: A Threat to Life

This is a phenomenological study of the victims' views of police misconduct. In data collection, phenomenological interviewing was employed to capture the phenomenon's essence. This study was conducted in Cebu City, Philippines, where the participants were those victims who had experienced police misconduct. These were ten participants who were selected through purposive convenient sampling. The study utilized an interview Guide to elicit in-depth responses from the participants. Extensive interviews were conducted to establish the three stages necessary for data gathering in the survey. The research aimed to explore several areas: the participants' adverse encounters with police misconduct, how they managed these experiences, and the effects of police misconduct on both the participants and their families. Results revealed two themes regarding the participants' negative experiences of police misconduct: Sadists in Uniform: A Deep Threat and Bill of Rights: Gone with the Wind. In coping with the experiences of police misconduct, there were two themes: Silent Outcry for Justice, Keeping in Silence Outcry for Justice, and Forgetting the Pain and Moving On. Regarding the impact of police misconduct on the lives of the participants and their families, two (2) themes emerged: On the Verge of Distrust and Loss of Confidence and Not Being Protected but Disparaged and Prosecuted. It was recommended that police-community relations should be strengthened. This caters to information dissemination in the community, and it is a tool to establish rapport by winning again the trust and confidence of the community. And observance of the rule of law by the police officers greatly affects every common dweller in the community; if these law enforcers respect human dignity and uphold the law of the land, there will be no more police victimization.

Pre-primary educators’ views on peace education as a strategy for building a sustainable society in Tanzania

ABSTRACT Though children are recognized as change agents to make the world a better place, it remains generally unknown how educational leaders and teachers conceptualize peace education based on classroom practices for building a peaceful and sustainable society. This study involved 42 pre-primary educators and leaders drawn using purposive sampling. Face-to-face interviews with individual study participants and semi-structured questionnaires were used to generate data. The study adopted a phenomenography approach to data analysis. Findings indicate that peace education in pre-primary education should be provided even in countries without conflicts or wars to develop children’s capacity to recognise and respect human dignity regardless of one’s socio-economic background. The study concludes that respondents were well-informed about strategies for provision in contributing to a peaceful and sustainable society. Integration of peace education into pre-primary teaching and learning for children was seen as essential in schooling and when cooperating with others within and outside the school.

Anti-corruption Law as a Fiction: The Illusion of Serving Morality by Controlling It through Rules and Regulations with an International Reach

According to the Corruption Perception Index of Transparency International, corruption is still far more prevalent in “non-Western” countries. The search for more effective anti-corruption legislation has shifted from preventing and combating bribery to preventing corruption in a broader sense. Consequently, anti-corruption law has obtained a more far-reaching scope. However, this does not work sufficiently. Up till now, we do not know why. This article focuses on why we should consider revising anti-corruption legislation. The research is a qualitative theoretical analysis based on empirical insights from preliminary anthropological fieldwork conducted in Gabon (Feikema 2015). One of the reasons for the challenge seems to be that the implicit institutional setup—namely, of a national state with a rule of law, which forms the point of departure of anti-corruption law—is not self-evident in countries where this democratic rule of law is not an experienced reality. For example, in the so-called hybrid political orders (Boege 2008), these developments of anti-corruption law may have a confusing and alienating impact, as demonstrated by a case study. Therefore, the effectiveness of these laws could be doubted. Even more importantly, respect for human dignity, the rationale of these laws, seems to be seriously at stake. We could understand recent developments in anti-corruption law as an illusion of control. Even more vitally, anti-corruption law could be considered a symptom of derailment. What we experience as evil may occur as the disturbance of the ecological cohesion of society: derailment.

The Ethical Challenges of Umbilical Cord Blood Stem Cell Banking: A Qualitative Study

Background: Umbilical cord blood serves as a potent source of hematopoietic stem cells, utilized in treating specific diseases and preserved in blood banks. Objectives: This study aims to explore the ethical issues associated with these repositories. Methods: This qualitative research involved conducting 14 interviews with experts and the families of recipients or donors of umbilical cord blood. Participants were selected purposefully from May to November 2021. Results: The investigation identified five principal ethical challenges: presentation of information, interpersonal relationships among involved parties, respect for human dignity, adherence to rules and regulations, and the handling of tissue samples. These challenges encompassed various categories and subcategories, including informed consent, communication and advertising of information, financial considerations, conflicts of interest, professional interactions, ownership rights concerning the child and parents, privacy and confidentiality issues, compliance with regulations and guidelines, and the clinical and research uses of the tissue samples. Conclusions: The study unveiled significant ethical concerns in the domain of umbilical cord blood stem cell banking. Addressing these ethical dilemmas necessitates the involvement of health policymakers and medical ethics experts, along with a comprehensive understanding of these banks' multifaceted nature by the community.

This paper examines on the fundamental principles of healthcare activities from the perspective of Cardinal Kim Soo-Hwan. The values propagated in a material-centric society generate a culture that disregards the sanctity of human life, which could adversely affect medical practices dedicated to human life. According to Cardinal Kim Soo-Hwan, healthcare serves life in a holistic dimension. To actualize this, he reads the Signs of the Times and, with critical reflection, presents three fundamental principles of medical activities: human dignity, respect for human life, and love for neighbors(humanity). In the field of healthcare, his focus is on humanity, and the foundation of his healthcare ethics is encapsulated in the love of Christ. Furthermore, the love of Christ is realized on a holistic level, grounded in a correct understanding of the human being as a unity of soul and body. Cardinal Kim Soo-Hwan integrates love for humanity with respect for human dignity and life. He also presents a path for the community formed by healthcare professionals and patients to embody human values.

Exploring the Reality of Poverty in East Nusa Tenggara, Indonesia. A Sociological Approach

This article discusses about poverty in East Nusa Tenggara Province, Indonesia from a sociological perspective. The aim is to find out the causes of poverty and the possible solutions. Using library research and qualitative approach, poverty is discussed and analyzed in order to explore aspects related to it. The findings indicate that poverty in East Nusa Tenggara is multidimensional in its indicators and causes. Three main causes of poverty are natural factors, human factors and structural factors. This study recommends that development in NTT be based on ethical and moral principles such as respect for human dignity, common good, sustainability, participation and cooperation, so that state administrators or public servants in NTT carry out their functions with full dedication and responsibility and avoid corrupt and exploitative behavior. Also, there is an urgent need to develop a “habitus” of bringing this issue into public sphere, in which people of every level in society can participate in public debates on how to overcome poverty in NTT by understanding its root-causes and strategies to solve the problem.

ЗАРУБІЖНИЙ ДОСВІД УПРАВЛІННЯ ОРГАНІЗАЦІЯМИ

The article is devoted to the topical issues of management of organizations in the world. It is determined that effective enterprise management is an important prerequisite for success in any business, regardless of its size and scope of activity. The purpose of the article is to study the systems and methods of business management in the world. To implement this task, scientific methods of content analysis, analysis, synthesis, comparison, and system method were applied. It is noted that the organization of enterprise management in the world is determined by local cultural management paradigms. In modern European cultures, emphasis is placed on interaction with employees, which is aimed at maximizing their interests and is manifested in respect for human dignity. Also important is the rational use of resources and readiness for innovation in the technological and scientific spheres, which contributes to the introduction of managerial innovations, albeit with a certain delay, into the activities of organizations and enterprises in Ukraine. The American experience is based on flexible management, because American enterprises often have a flexible hierarchical structure. In addition, an important factor is corporate culture, although the manifestations of this culture may be different in different companies, but common to them is a democratic environment in which employees can freely express their ideas and opinions. In particular, Ukrainian enterprises can learn from the Asian experience in creating long‐term development strategies and plans. Asian cultures emphasize community and cooperation, so an approach to creating a team work environment and promoting mutual support among employees is important. Most Asian enterprises prefer long‐ term relationships in work teams, with partners and customers, which promotes stability and trust in the market. The conclusions emphasize that the need for a competent combination of world experience with Ukrainian realities will become an important task for managers when establishing an effective management system shortly.

Conduct and Validation of an Educational Lecture Series on the Integration of Faith and Scientific Research Methodology

This paper examines the effectiveness of integrating faith-based values with scientific methodologies through a case study of a lecture series conducted in Nabaoy and Boracay. The Catholic Church’s support for ethical scientific endeavors that benefit humanity and respect human dignity was emphasized. The study aimed to enhance participants’ knowledge and skills in integrating faith and science. The lecture series involved pre-test and post-test assessments to evaluate changes in participants’ understanding. The study involved two groups of participants: Group A, comprising local pupils of Brgy. Nabaoy, and Group B, consisting of faculty members from Nabaoy Elementary School, Malay National High School, and Aklan State University. Results showed significant improvements: Group A’s average score increased from 55% to 85% (p < 0.001, Cohen’s d = 2.42), and Group B’s average score increased from 58% to 88% (p < 0.001, Cohen’s d = 2.32). Perception ratings of the integration of Laudato Si values also significantly improved, with Group A’s rating rising from 2.8 to 4.4 (p < 0.001, Cohen’s d = 1.98) and Group B’s rating increasing from 3.0 to 4.5 (p < 0.001, Cohen’s d = 1.89). The findings underscore the effectiveness of integrating faith with scientific research methods.

"Help me to decide": A study of human rights-based supported decision making with persons with intellectual disabilities.

Decision making is the basis for individual autonomy and societal participation. To support persons' human right to make life decisions, the model of supported decision making (SDM) has evolved and complies with Article 12 of the United Nations Convention on the Human Rights of Persons with Disabilities. Models for implementing SDM and outcomes achieved by applying SDM in community settings remain insufficiently explored. This study used a human rights perspective with participatory, qualitative research methods to investigate environmental conditions and social support measures that enabled persons with intellectual disabilities (ID) to make and implement their own decisions. Data gathered were 6 months of field notes about implementing SDM in a L'Arche day activity program with 26 adults with ID, with opinions and drawings illustrating persons' decision making. All data were analyzed thematically. As a result of using the SDM intervention, persons with ID became more expressive, able to discuss and debate options, participated in organizational and municipal decision making, and expressed "joy" and feeling "more like a human." Staff supporters found SDM fulfilling and noticed it increased the sense of ownership persons with ID experienced in individual and group meetings. An organizational environment that respects human dignity, supports sustained relationships between persons with ID and decision supporters, individualizes SDM depending on how persons can communicate, and encourages staff self-reflection about prejudices and positionality is essential for implementing SDM with persons with ID. SDM processes shift oppressive social narratives and policies in the direction of a social, relational model of the decision-making capacities and competencies of persons with ID.
