Scientometric, Thematic, and Methodological Analysis of IJCER Construction Education Focused Publications – 2004 - 2023

ABSTRACT Research projects must be carefully designed, executed, and disseminated to ensure validity, reliability, and generalizability. The International Journal of Construction Education and Research (IJCER) is the leader in publishing education-focused scholarship. This mixed methods case study research examined construction education-focused articles published in the IJCER between 2004 and 2023, aiming to showcase the works of the most prolific construction education research publisher and identify actionable areas of potential future research. The scientometric analysis showed largely U.S.-based authorship, with increased international authorship over time and clusters of prominent universities and academics. The thematic analysis showed a primarily qualitative methodological focus, with data provided mainly by students and industry practitioners via surveys. Topics such as BIM education have been potentially researched to the point of saturation. Future research opportunities are proposed, including expanding methodological usage and addressing less-researched topics such as artificial intelligence, underrepresented students, student attraction to construction majors, and program ranking. The findings call attention to the sustained evolution of education research and the growing recognition of IJCER. Additionally, the article details step-by-step guidance on conducting mixed-methods case study research and substantiates the need for construction education-specific research guidelines.

What Am I Doing Here? Self-Reflexivity in Cross-Border Journalism Research

In journalism research conducted in the Global South, power relationships between the researcher and the researched mirror the uneven power structures between the Western journalists and their news subjects or their non-Western colleagues working alongside them. But so far, the figure of the journalism researcher in such contexts has not been problematized to any great extent in journalism scholarship. Moreover, the journalism researcher working in such contexts borrows heavily from the methodological toolkit of ethnography. But while the cultural anthropologists who created and refined ethnographic methodology have long been interrogating the colonial and neocolonial logics that inform ethnographic methods, journalism scholars have yet to significantly engage in such a self-critical project. We take ourselves as the starting points of the self-reflexive critical debate we believe journalism researchers interested in decolonizing journalism studies must have with themselves when it comes to conducting research in spaces of asymmetric power relations within global journalism. Laid out in three first person self-reflexive narratives, our critical questions are prompted by our own geopolitical and embodied presence in Lebanon, Afghanistan, and North Korea. We then discuss the commonalities among the questions that arose from our respective positionalities. Through this grounded, self-reflexive exploration, we aim to position global journalism researchers at the center of critical inquiry.

Risk factor of pickleball injury: systematic review and meta-analysis

Background and purpose Purpose: to identify and evaluate critically the evidence pertaining to pickleball injury risk factors. Material and methods The Preferred Reporting Items for Systematic Review and Meta-Analyses (PRISMA) framework was followed for conducting the systematic review. Google Scholar, PubMed, and Scopus article searches The Preferred Reporting Items for Systematic Reviews and Meta-Analysis (PRISMA) flow technique is used during the data collection phase of the literature review. The following factors are taken into consideration while looking for research journals: (1) variables that match the needs of the writing; (2) consistent data collection techniques; (3) measurable and reliable research findings; and (4) clearly and precisely stated data analysis. Researchers used the Google Scholar, PubMed, and Scopus databases to search for literature on the subject of risk factors for pickleball injuries. Google Scholar, PubMed, and Scopus were chosen because of their ease of access and eligibility to get complete and in-depth articles. In addition, researchers are looking for open-access articles so that they can access them for free. Keywords used include pickleball, injury, risk, and factor. In the initial search, 417 articles were found, consisting of 406 articles from Google Scholar, 9 articles from Scopus, and 2 articles from PubMed. After going through the selection process, 392 articles were automatically deleted, and 25 potentially relevant articles were obtained to go through the next selection process. Of the 25 articles, 5 that did not meet the inclusion criteria were removed, and 20 articles were found. Of the 20 articles reviewed through research titles and abstracts, 10 were deleted, and the remaining 10 were worth analyzing. Of the 10 articles analyzed by researchers, six were found to be reviewed. The deletion of 4 articles was due to 2 articles not being able to explain risk factors for injury to pickleball, 1 article being a systematic literature review, and 1 article not explaining injury to pickleball. Result Age, gender, technique, equipment, a lack of warm-up and stretching, past injuries, overuse, and court surface were found in six articles to be risk factors for pickleball injuries. Conclusion Excessive use and a lack of stretching and warming up are two things that require attention out of all the risk factors for injury that have occurred in the past. The greatest risk factor for injuries to recur years later is prior injuries. To reduce the likelihood of more injuries, the best therapy must be given. A pickleball player must be aware of the volume, intensity, and rest intervals of their activities as these can be risk factors for injury. Prior to participating in sports, especially pickleball, it's important to take into account the lack of a warm-up and stretching routine. Despite the lack of particular study on this topic, it is crucial to lower the risk of harm.

Classroom to Clinic: Universities Need to Support The Next Generation of Clinical Academics

The General Medical Council’s current version of Outcomes for Doctors sets out three key areas of expertise for tomorrow’s doctors: professional values & behaviours, professional skills, and professional knowledge. (1) Each of these competencies further develops into numerous core skills every student should attain at medical school. While the learning outcomes set under Clinical Research & Scholarship (part of Outcome 3: Professional Knowledge) could usually be attained through numerous instances across a typical medical school curriculum, opportunities to put research skills into practice have remained relatively competitive and scarce. This represents an emerging challenge across the career spectrum, particularly in the UK as the Medical Schools Council warns that the NHS Long Term Workforce Plan 2031-32 could be jeopardised if the number of clinical academics is not maintained.(2) Facilitated by the impacts of an aging workforce alongside years of underinvestment – NHS trusts and medical schools need to work quickly to address barriers in training and retaining the next generation of clinical academics.(3) Clinical Academics are the foundation of the future of medical schools. However, much more must be done to introduce, facilitate, and encourage medical students to consider the option of training as a clinical academic. Investing in opportunities for medical students to get involved in research and teaching early on in their medical career, could be a solution not just to tackle this future workforce challenge but also to offer better career prospects. This is supported by evidence from research on matched-cohort studies conducted in Australia & New Zealand demonstrating an encouraging statistic independent of academic confounding variables. (4,5) Medical students who published research in medical student journals were significantly more likely to be associated with higher degree attainment, PubMed® indexed publications and in some cases, more likely to enter surgical training or their chosen specialty. However, getting involved in clinical research as a medical student remains challenging. Lack of opportunities, competitive funding calls, and fewer supervisors willing to take on the burden of training students are only some of the many barriers students currently face in getting involved. Recent results from a survey by the University of Glasgow’s Medical School demonstrated reassuring enthusiasm for a career in clinical research/teaching among a small sample size of 55 students. Commenting on these findings, Professor Iain McInnes, Head of the College of Medical, Veterinary and Life Sciences, said ‘.... supporting clinical academics at all stages of their career is a top priority for our college and this survey shows that the pipeline for the future of academia is in good health indeed!’. On the balance, the need of the hour must now focus on retaining this enthusiasm by investing in opportunities and offering pathways to ensure medical students can actively engage in academia. Several steps including enhancing funding, fostering stronger mentorship and networking opportunities, promoting interdisciplinary collaboration, and recognizing research efforts by medical students can go a long way in pursuing students to consider a rewarding career in clinical academia.

Publishing mathematics education research in English: amplifying voices from the field

AbstractIn this paper we investigate the issue of representation within the Journal of Mathematics Teacher Education (JMTE) and the broader academic publishing landscape, particularly focusing on the underrepresentation of authors from various world regions. A questionnaire, distributed globally, aimed to amplify the voices of the underrepresented, exploring the constraints and affordances of publishing in English-medium mathematics education research journals. The question that guided our investigation was: What do voices from the mathematics education community raise in their responses to questions about publishing in English-medium research journals like JMTE? We used qualitative methods to review the responses and identify common themes. The findings revealed significant barriers and challenges related to language, research location, and institutional support, highlighting the complexities of navigating the global academic community and the academic publishing culture. We propose actionable suggestions to foster a more equitable, diverse, and inclusive publishing environment.

A - 59 An Exploration of a Passive Decision Making Style within the Cognitive Disengagement Syndrome Population and its Contribution to Social Isolation

Abstract Objective Recent research has shown that Cognitive Disengagement Syndrome (CDS) may reduce decision-making independence. In this way, CDS may include a prognosis of social disengagement due to symptoms of the disorder such as apathy, low motivation, passivity, and low energy. This poster investigates the relationship between CDS symptoms and social disengagement and explores possible treatment focuses that could increase individuals’ connection to others and the world around them. Data Selection Information regarding this poster was obtained through a review of the literature including peer-reviewed articles from 2019–2024. Articles were gathered from the Journal of Clinical Child and Adolescent Psychology, Journal of Attention Disorders, Journal of Pediatric Psychology, Child Neuropsychology, and Research in Developmental Disabilities. Informal analyses were used to determine themes including keywords such as sluggish cognitive tempo, cognitive disengagement syndrome, decision-making, social isolation, and apathy. Data Synthesis CDS is associated with lower levels of assertiveness and higher levels of passivity than in the Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder Inattentive Type (ADHD-IN) population. Current research suggests CDS is associated with social isolation influenced by difficulty initiating conversations and being more likely to engage in anxious rumination during conversations. Treatment interventions for CDS should target shyness, task-unrelated thought patterns, behavioral inhibition, hyperreactivity to social stressors, socially isolating behavioral addictions, verbal inhibition, and difficulty with divided attention. Conclusions Based on conclusions drawn in this poster, future studies should examine the impact of loneliness on social initiation frequency within the CDS population. The development of a questionnaire that aims to differentiate ADHD-IN from CDS may also be useful.

Pragmatic sociology and the economics of convention: Introducing a ‘novel’ approach to English-speaking education research

This special issue brings together current work in education research that engages with a pragmatic, yet critical theoretical tradition sprung from the French context during the 1980s. Based on a particular understanding of existence, perception, reality and the dynamics of social life, this theoretical tradition has continuously been developed over the past four decades in a variety of fields, such as law, economic studies, political sciences, education research and sociology. Despite its rich history, this approach has until recently only garnered limited attention from English-speaking research communities. Consequently, our aim is to introduce the approach to the European Education Research Journal readership and demonstrate the tradition’s richness and range of use for education research. By showing the many ways in which this perspective can be utilised in education research, we hope to inspire more scholars who publish in English-speaking contexts to engage with us and explore what insights this ‘novel’ perspective can bring to our research field. In this editorial, we briefly explain the perspective’s base assumptions and key features, discuss the potential relevance of this approach for education research, and introduce the articles of the special issue. First, however, we want to address the issue of naming.

Parameters of sustainability: a systematic literature review and bibliometric analysis with respect to micro enterprises

Purpose The purpose of this paper is to perform a thorough analysis of the literature on the parameters of sustainability of the micro-enterprises. It seeks to provide an organizing framework to identify research gaps and future directions. Using data from Web of Science and Scopus, the study offers insights into key trends, authorship and thematic shifts, informing future research design and positioning. Design/methodology/approach Researchers used a systematic review methodology, gathering data from Web of Science and Scopus databases. R Studio software facilitated bibliometric analysis. This study scrutinized research papers to construct an organizing framework and identify thematic trends in sustainability parameters for micro-enterprises. Findings The review presents a comprehensive overview of sustainability parameters in micro-enterprises, revealing significant research trends, key authors, countries and journals. It identifies gaps and suggests future research directions, aiding in the design and positioning of forthcoming studies in this domain. Research limitations/implications Limitations may include the scope of databases accessed and potential biases in the selected literature. Future studies could explore additional databases or incorporate qualitative analyses for deeper insights into sustainability parameters in micro-enterprises. Practical implications This study offers practical insights for policymakers, practitioners and researchers by highlighting key sustainability parameters in micro-enterprises. It informs decision-making processes concerning resource allocation, policy formulation and support mechanisms for sustainable development. Social implications Understanding sustainability parameters in micro-enterprises has significant social implications, particularly for vulnerable groups like craftsmen, women and young entrepreneurs. By addressing these parameters, interventions can enhance livelihoods and contribute to broader socio-economic development. Originality/value By providing a thorough analysis of sustainability factors in micro-enterprises and applying bibliometric analysis to shed light on research trends, this paper adds to the body of literature. Its organized framework identifies gaps and guides future research, offering value to scholars, policymakers and practitioners invested in sustainable development at the grassroots level.

“O Author, Where Art Thou?” An Analysis of Affiliation Indexing in Canadian Journals and Bibliometric Research Potential

Bibliometrics in the social sciences, humanities and arts (SSHA) are hampered by the limited presence of scholarly journals in analysis tools traditionally used. We analyzed the level of indexing of Canadian journal author affiliations in Dimensions.ai and OpenAlex to assess effects on bibliometric research. Annually, around 3,500 articles signed by Canadian researchers and published in Canadian journals remained irretrievable. Incomplete indexing particularly affects journals associated with not-for-profit publishers and those publishing in French. A fair representation of national SSHA research could enhance our understanding of publishing trends and contribute to the sustainability of the Canadian journals.

Scholarship of Teaching and Learning Research in Communication Sciences and Disorders Journals: An Exploratory Survey of the Recent Literature.

Inspired by a preliminary survey of the Scholarship of Teaching and Learning (SoTL) literature conducted by Friberg et al. (2014), the current study aimed to expand the original study's findings-that SoTL was rarely published in the communication sciences and disorders (CSD) literature from 2009 to 2013-to the subsequent 8-year period (2014-2021). The latter period was of particular relevance considering the dissolution of one American Speech-Language-Hearing Association (ASHA)-affiliated publication and the addition of another non-ASHA-affiliated publication during that time. Ten peer-reviewed CSD journals and the articles published in them were identified via a survey of the literature that used narrowly defined criteria developed in collaboration with a librarian. Five trained CSD graduate student raters compared a definition of SoTL to article abstracts to determine whether each should have been categorized as SoTL. Part 1 of the study investigated an 8-year time span, Part 2 investigated the remaining nine journals in the subsequent 5 years, and Part 3 investigated publication rates of SoTL in Teaching and Learning in Communication Sciences & Disorders (TLCSD) alone. Part 1 of the study revealed that publication rates of SoTL were extremely low in the 10 surveyed CSD journals in the 8-year time span investigated. A similar and diminishing trend was found in Part 2. Even smaller percentages of journals were dedicated to SoTL. Part 3 confirmed that relatively large amounts of CSD-specific SoTL have been published in TLCSD since its inception in 2017. As of 2021, SoTL articles continued to be uncommonly published in CSD journals. Until recently, scholarly teachers attempting to apply SoTL in the classroom had limited resources. Beginning in 2017, TLCSD has provided an outlet for SoTL, whereas other CSD journals seem to have published less of it. Reform of publication, peer review, tenure, and promotion policies and procedures is called for so that SoTL might be included as a valid scientific endeavor.

This study aims to analyze the impact of monetary policy on Indonesia's international trade using a literature review approach. The monetary policy implemented by Bank Indonesia, particularly concerning interest rates, inflation, and the exchange rate of the rupiah, significantly affects the performance of international trade. This study collects, evaluates, and synthesizes information from various relevant literature sources, including scholarly journal articles, books, research reports, and policy documents. The findings indicate that interest rates influence the competitiveness of export products through production costs, controlled inflation boosts foreign direct investment flows, and exchange rate stability supports long-term business planning and investment. Effective monetary policy can help create a stable trade environment, enhance the competitiveness of Indonesian products in the global market, and strengthen the country's economic position in the global supply chain.

Every four years the International Confederation of Dietetic Associations (ICDA) hosts the International Congress of Nutrition and Dietetics. (ICND). In 2024, the ICND was held June 12- 14 in Toronto, Ontario, Canada. Informed by the overarching theme of “Rise to the Challenge”, the comprehensive program covered a wide range of topics, sharing the best of applied science, practice and training experiences in the field of nutrition and dietetics. This special article in the Fall issue of the Canadian Journal of Dietetics Practice and Research contains all abstracts accepted for presentation at ICND 2024 (oral abstracts, poster presentations, expert lectures, panel discussions, and workshops). The abstract peer-review and selection process was completed by the ICND 2024 Scientific Committee. All abstracts are published exactly as submitted without further review by the journal Editor or publisher.

P157 THE USE OF PARTICIPATORY ACTION RESEARCH TO PROMOTE INCREASED CONSUMPTION OF VEGETABLES AMONG AFRICAN WOMEN WITH/AT RISK OF HYPERTENSION IN GQEBERHA, SOUTH AFRICA

Background and objectives: Poor vegetable and fruit intake are reported in multiple studies of the South African population, especially among people with less income and lower educational status and it is a known risk factor for non-communicable diseases such as hypertension. “South Africa has one of the highest levels of hypertension globally, coupled with poor rates of diagnosis, treatment and control” Ware et al., (2019). It has been suggested that indigenous vegetables may aid in increasing vegetable intake, a recommendation of the South African Food Based Dietary Guidelines. As urbanisation and the nutrition transition increases in South Africa, the loss of indigenous knowledge and utilisation of indigenous vegetables is significant and is worse compared to countries such as Kenya and Tanzania. The aim of this study was to collaboratively promote the use of indigenous vegetables by African women in a peri-urban area with/at risk of hypertension with the goal of improving agency to increase vegetable intake. Methods: A qualitative participatory action research (PAR) methodology was utilised. African adult women with hypertension or at risk of hypertension were recruited from a local healthcare facility for a one year long project, with a total enrolment of 12-24 participants. Data collection included observations, focus groups, key informant interviews and the research journal of the researcher. Results: Participants worked collaboratively to co-construct relevant nutrition education materials, recipe development using local indigenous vegetables, clinic open day and a seminar for other community members. There was greater uptake of vegetable gardening at home and at the local community centre. Conclusions: using PAR methodologies to address inadequate vegetable intake and promote the use of indigenous vegetable crops may benefit personal agency which includes an individual's perceptions about how much control they have over themselves and their environment, in order to carry out a certain behaviour; self-confidence or efficacy; the ability to self-regulate and monitor behaviour and the ability to identify and use good coping skills.

The use of artificial intelligence tools in newsrooms is revolutionary and controversial as well. Despite the promising opportunities provided by AI to enhance digital journalism practice, it also raises several legal, professional, and ethical considerations. Research about AI in Arab media is a promising area of interest that increasingly attracts scholars. However, there is a need for systematic and purposive growth in future research about AI and media, that considers the socio-cultural and economic contexts of countries and meets the priorities and needs of media organizations. Accordingly, this paper provides researchers with an overview of the main challenges and debates in the field of AI and journalism studies. Transmission Channel of Agriculture Food Import Tariff to Stunting Prevalence

Increases in food prices affect poverty in a way that poor consumer is harmed due to the high proportion of their budget they spent on food. Stunting prevalence might be instigated by several factors such as access to food and nutrition intake, genetic and environment. This research aims to analyse the effect of food import tariffs towards the stunting prevalence of children aged under 5 (five) across districts in Indonesia, and we explore the indirect relationship between stunting prevalence and trade policy. This research uses quantitative descriptive research methods, utilizing both primary and secondary data. Primary data were obtained through the distribution of questionnaires, followed by Focus Group. Secondary data were obtained from relevant institutions such as the Central Statistics Agency, research journals, and related books. The method of data analysis in the study uses quantitative analysis with a mathematical model. The results showed that tariffs can reduce the consumption of foods that serve in the intake of dietary nutrients such as calories, protein and fat. As a result, food intake affects the prevalence of stunting. Trade liberalisation can have a beneficial impact on child health. The effects of trade liberalisation on stunting through the food channel include: a) trade has a significant effect on calorie, protein, and fat intake, b) intake of these nutrients has a significant effect on child stunting.

Minorities, Women, and Radicals in the Discipline of Economics

The discipline of economics is informally managed in the United States by the American Economic Association (AEA). The AEA’s management of the economics community however was challenged starting in the 1960s by blacks, women, and radicals. Blacks, women, and radical economists each adopted a different strategy towards achieving greater empowerment in the discipline. Black economists created the Caucus of Black Economists and participated in the AEA’s Committee on the Status of Minority Groups in the Economics Profession to encourage that steps be taken towards affirmative action and create a space for the publication of black economic research. Women economists participated in the AEA’s Committee for the Status of Women in the Economics Profession in 1971 to document the number of women in the economics profession, create a network of women economists and those supporting their work, and publish a newsletter containing statistics on representation within the profession and a listing of job openings and candidate availability. Radical economists created the Union for Radical Political Economics in 1968 to serve as a scholarly home for those holding non-mainstream beliefs and undertake the publication of a research journal, and sought some degree of solace from the AEA’s Committee on Political Discrimination. In the documentation of the different approaches taken by these groups, it becomes clear that there is no optimal inclusion strategy and that the barriers to being a recognized economist remain 50 years later.

Exploring aspects of the development of filmmaking research within the Academy over past decades, this article focuses on creative practice-based methods and the establishment of filmmaking as a legitimate research endeavour. It delves into the nuances of filmmaking research methodologies, specifically the rearticulation and repositioning of research practices to encompass both the work of filmmaking production and further filmmaking engagement with its reception. The importance of research statements in elucidating scholarly contributions made by films and other screen works, like scripts and video essays, is emphasised, alongside discussions of peer-review processes and the role of creative practice research journals in fostering critical dialogue within the filmmaking research community. Despite ongoing tensions between academic and industry requirements, the article argues for the progress of filmmaking research as a distinctive discipline with distinct methodologies, highlighting the need for continual refinement in quality assessment metrics to reflect the evolving nature of the field.

Improper care of the umbilical cord can lead to premature detachment and increase the risk of umbilical cord infection (neonatal tetanus). As long as the umbilical cord has not detached naturally, it needs to be properly cared for. Failure to do so can result in infection characterized by moisture, pus, and a foul odor around the umbilical cord. This review aims to determine the influence of mothers' knowledge on the care of the umbilical cord in newborns. This review aims to investigate the impact of mothers' knowledge on the care of the umbilical cord in newborns. This study utilizes a literature review method, utilizing journal articles obtained from Google Scholar, SINTA, and Garuda databases, published between 2019 and 2023, with full text available in the Indonesian language. Based on the reviewed journals, it was found that 7 journals discovered the influence of maternal knowledge on umbilical cord care in newborns, while 4 journals stated that there are still mothers who perform umbilical cord care incorrectly according to the procedure. Based on the literature review of 10 research journals, respondents' characteristics among postpartum mothers can be classified based on age, educational level, and occupation. All these factors significantly impact a mother's knowledge regarding the care of the umbilical cord in newborns, highlighting the importance of health education in enhancing maternal knowledge.

A Comprehensive Review of Silver and Gold Nanoparticles as Effective Antibacterial Agents.

The increasing threat from antibiotic-resistant bacteria has necessitated the development of novel methods to counter bacterial infections. In this context, the application of metallic nanoparticles (NPs), especially gold (Au) and silver (Ag), has emerged as a promising strategy due to their remarkable antibacterial properties. This review examines research published between 2006 and 2023, focusing on leading journals in nanotechnology, materials science, and biomedical research. The primary applications explored are the efficacy of Ag and Au NPs as antibacterial agents, their synthesis methods, morphological properties, and mechanisms of action. An extensive review of the literature on NPs synthesis, morphology, minimum inhibitory concentration (MIC), minimum bactericidal concentration (MBC), and effectiveness against various Gram(+/-) bacteria confirms the antibacterial efficacy of Au and Ag NPs. The synthesis methods and characteristics of NPs, such as size, shape, and surface charge, are crucial in determining their antibacterial activity, as these factors influence their interactions with bacterial cells. Furthermore, this review underscores the urgent necessity of standardizing synthesis techniques, MICs, and reporting protocols to enhance the comparability and reproducibility of future studies. Standardization is essential for ensuring the reliability of research findings and accelerating the clinical application of NP-based antimicrobial approaches. This review aims to propel NP-based antimicrobial strategies by elucidating the properties that enhance the antibacterial activity of Ag and Au NPs. By highlighting their inhibitory effects against various bacterial strains and relatively low cytotoxicity, this work positions Ag and Au NPs as promising materials for developing antibacterial agents, making a significant contribution to global efforts to combat antibiotic-resistant pathogens.
