Letters from a Kangaroo: A Third Object Technique for Working with the Young Child

The author has a Bachelor of Applied Science (Social Work) from the Western Australian Institute of Technology. Before coming to Britain she worked for four years in Perth, Australia, in a local authority social work department and a unit for disturbed teenagers. In this country she has been employed by the Family Care Agency in Edinburgh. In May 1980 she completed the one year part-time Post Qualification Certificate in Social Work (Child Care) at Newcastle University. This article is based on a dissertation describing the placement work and reading completed for that course. She has now returned to Australia.

The role of professional societies in noise‐control education

Although societies of technical professions are not chartered to provide studies for certified credit (in the sense of educational institutions), each society has addressed the matter of education in its respective field. Such concerns are manifested in various forms: society‐sponsored workshops, seminars, special sessions, topical conferences, and even selected certification of individual technical qualifications. Additional society contributions include directories of accredited course offerings by educational institutions within selected fields of special concern and information on job opportunities and advanced degree graduates produced by educational institutions within selected subfields of specialization. Thus, even though professional societies do not offer accredited courses of study, they tend to be an active partner in education‐related functions. During the past decade, noise‐related studies have received increased attention by both educational and professional institutions, resulting in a marked upturn of events relating to educational activities by professional societies. Specific education‐related activities by professional societies have been selected for abbreviated description of the important role they play in the total educational process in the field of noise control.

Between Tradition and Progress: Oldenburg University's Model Plan for Comprehensive Teacher Training

Abstract Since early 1974, a pilot project for integrated teacher training has been in progress at Oldenburg University. This is currently the only extensive teacher training reform which exist in the German Federal Republic. All plans for this integrated training program are designed to provide training normally encompassed by the traditional two‐stage programm. The integrated training program includes: - studies in the areas of education and social science; - studies in two major subjects which are later to be taught at school; - practical studies and activities. The new model leads to the following degrees: - nine semesters of study for a Certificate of Qualification for primary and lower‐level secondary school; - eleven semesters for a Certificate of Qualification for higher‐level secon dary school and the education of exceptional children. The Qualified Specialist

In the field of medicine, groups of specialists have set machinery in motion for awarding certificates of merit to those of their number who are justly entitled to so style themselves. One of the purposes back of the movement, and the most important one in the minds of many, is to enable the specialty and those awarded certificates of qualification to maintain standing and prestige. Perhaps entirely too much is expected in that regard, particularly in view of the qualifying procedures generally adopted. In a general way, a specialty may be defined as the application of extraordinary knowledge to a part of a large general field. In certifying to the qualifications of specialists under such a definition, enquiry is restricted very largely to the matter of “extraordinary knowledge” which under the circumstances may possibly be the only practical procedure. To the Editor: —In your issue of June 8, on page 909, under the caption, An Example to be Followed it is stated that Andrew Auvan of Emmitsburg, Md., who was 90 years old on April 27, has contributed $50 to the Rush Monument Fund. In a communication written immediately on reading this paragraph, but which has evidently failed to reach you, I begged you to state that the worthy physician whose example I hoped would be followed was Dr. Andrew Annan, of Emmitsburg, Md., whose father, Dr. Robert Landales Annan, was a student of Dr. Rush, and whose certificate of qualification for the practice of medicine, bearing this great man's signature, is now in the possession of the latter's grandson, Dr. Robert L. A Wise and Able Governor.

Little Rock, Ark., March 23, 1895. To the Editor: —I inclose herewith a cutting from the Little Rock Daily Gazette of this date. Up to two years ago a law had been in operation in this State, regulating the practice of medicine. It provided for a medical board in each county (about seventy-five of them) consisting of three physicians, who were appointed by the county judges. They gave certificates of qualification to any and everybody who applied for them, and these certificates, when once obtained, were good forever, and permitted the holder to practice medicine anywhere in the State. Two years ago this law was repealed and an Act was passed which required that all persons beginning practice after that date should be graduates of some reputable medical college, having not less than two full courses of lectures as a minimum requirement for graduation.
