The author has a Bachelor of Applied Science (Social Work) from the Western Australian Institute of Technology. Before coming to Britain she worked for four years in Perth, Australia, in a local authority social work department and a unit for disturbed teenagers. In this country she has been employed by the Family Care Agency in Edinburgh. In May 1980 she completed the one year part-time Post Qualification Certificate in Social Work (Child Care) at Newcastle University. This article is based on a dissertation describing the placement work and reading completed for that course. She has now returned to Australia.
