China’s mediated public diplomacy towards Japan: a text-as-data approach

ABSTRACT As a rising power, China has realized that it is an urgent task to improve its national image among foreign publics. In the era of Xi Jinping, China has invested a substantial amount of resources in its foreign-language media to present a more favorable national image to an international audience. This study provides a novel approach to examine the content of China’s Japanese-language media and its dissemination. The study found that the Chinese state media promotes China’s soft power using two main strategies: (1) highlighting China’s culture and economic achievements, and (2) providing positive stories of China. A comparative content analysis of Chinese and Japanese media shows that Chinese media’s narratives are not well circulated in Japan’s public opinion field. This study has both substantive and methodological significance. Substantively, this investigation enhances our understanding of China’s strategic use of state-owned media for public diplomacy. Methodologically, this research contributes to the employment of quantitative text analysis methods on Japanese-language data.

The image construction of online opinion leaders from the perspective of "Cultural Discount"

Opinion leaders play an important role in the traditional public opinion field. in recent years, with the rapid development of China's market economy and Internet technology, people's awareness of political participation is increasing, and network opinion leaders also emerge as the times require. This paper takes Sina Weibo platform as the research object, revolves around the incident of Hubm boycotting cotton in Xinjiang, divides Weibo opinion leaders into three categories: entertainment stars and other public figures, official government or mainstream media Weibo, and self-media Big V, analyzes the role of all kinds of opinion leaders in the process of public opinion development, and then analyzes the role mechanism of Weibo opinion leaders in political communication with the theory of "psychology-behavior".

Research on the Positive Influence of Short Video on Public Opinion Dissemination of Social Hot Events——A Case Study of "Beijing Winter Olympics"

In the era of intelligent media, the communication mode of social life has changed, and the public opinion field of social life has gradually extended from oral communication to short video new media such as Douyin. With the growing development of short video new media, many news media have also been stationed on short-video platforms, publishing news hotspots through short-video platforms, getting attention, and the flow holding is obtained. This paper analyzes the characteristics of public opinion dissemination of "Beijing Winter Olympics" event on short video platform, and studies the positive influence of short video on public opinion dissemination of social hot events.

Civic Participation in Chinese Cyberpolitics: A Grounded Theory Approach of Para-Xylene Projects.

The internet provides a free and convenient platform for the public to obtain political information and participate in political life. Meanwhile, there occurs fierce confrontation of various values and ideologies, shaping a complicated and changeable field of public opinion. The strategies of civic participation and the generation of public opinion show quite different characteristics in such a mediatized society. This article aimed to study civic participation in Chinese cyberpolitics and to find its patterns and the logic behind it. Due to the natural advantage of the environmental issues in its commonality, the internet events in the last decade related to the PX (para-xylene) project were selected as the research object. This study used grounded theory as the method and conducted a cross-case analysis on the original data captured on Weibo—one of the most popular social media sites in China. Finally, four patterns of civic participation in internet events were found and summarized, as well as the intervention and influence of media logic in different modes. However, it is political logic, rather than media logic, that reveals greater vitality in the civic participation of cyber deliberation. Mediatization does exist but is far from dominance. It has certain significance for the supervision and management of public opinion and the rational and harmonious development of civic participation in public issues.

Modelling network public opinion polarization based on SIR model considering dynamic network structure

Under the dispute between China and the United States, the international field of public opinion is dominated by increasing tensions, and the network rumors triggered by the COVID-19 epidemic are intensifying. In view of the above-mentioned context, this paper focuses on the development and the evolution process of public opinions. Since the evolution of public opinion is often accompanied by the spread and diffusion of information, this paper combines the process of information diffusion with the development process of polarization behavior, and brings in the dynamic network and the timeliness factor of public opinion dissemination, so as to better explore the polarization process of public opinion under the dynamic network. Then, this paper focuses on the analysis of the parameters of the model and through the dynamic adjustment of parameters, finding out the main factors that affect the trend and development of network public opinion. In addition, this paper introduces an actual case, and takes the actual case data as the support to demonstrate the reliability and practical application value of the model. Finally, based on the simulation results and analysis of actual cases, this paper puts forward the corresponding preventive measures to alleviate the polarization behavior of the group.

Supervision System Reconstruction of Online Advertising in China

Abstract: Under the influence of the frequently updated new media technology, great changes have taken place in the ecology of online advertising supervision up till now. In the past, most of the issues about advertising in China came to our view with the help of professional media. However, the role of We Media in the participation of social supervision of advertising is still on the rise. Although professional media organizations are still the supervision backbone to report the follow-up supervision, the boundary of advertising supervision is increasingly blurred after the multiple subjects intervened the network public opinion field, and the advertising supervision is becoming more and more extensive in the multi-agent competition. With the enhancement of the dialogism and personal perspective of online advertising supervision, the basic mode of traditional advertising management is undergoing the subversion and reconstruction of the new narrative of social media in China.

Journalistic Professionalism and Objectivity in the Age of Digital Media: A Case Study of the United States

At the beginning of the twenty-first century, we have been greatly impacted by the shift from the Internet to the mobile Internet for that the emergence of the mobile Internet indicates that the channels for audiences to receive information will become extensive and more pluralistic. Traditional media, such as newspapers and television, which had a high market share and viewership, are facing an unprecedented crisis. Today, the essence of many conflict crises in the world lies in the distortion of values caused by the bias of the truth in the process of communication. Therefore, this paper argues that in today’s noisy public opinion field and post-truth era, it is necessary to discuss the objectivity of news again for it is an important part of journalistic professionalism, and only a good grasp of the methods and concepts of objectivity can reduce the occurrence of conflicts to a certain extent. In the following, I will analyse the definition, cases and development history of objectivity in America by externalizing the philosophical concept into real cases, and explore the practical significance of the existence of journalistic objectivity in the digital media era.

From Words to Images: The Rise and Treatment of Visual Public Opinion in the Post-epidemic Era

The rise of short videos in the Post-epidemic era have caused the migration of Internet traffic to visual content. This new form of media based on communication technology and algorithm technology can arouse more emotional resonances of audiences, which promotes the formation of a Visual Public opinion field. The emergence of this public opinion field not only increases the risk of public opinion crises such as rumors and extreme views, but also points out the current direction of public opinion governance, and shows the importance of making good use of visual communication methods. Different countries around the world have different attitudes to the problem of public opinion. If we analyze these views, we can see that about 50% of the world's population believes that public opinion does not exist and can not exist, but the other 50% believe that it still exists. Of course, as the life of society demonstrates, public opinion exists in democracies and cannot exist in totalitarian countries where there is "one true opinion." Ukraine became a democratic country today, one of the European states, that has the rich ceremonies, traditions, habits, language, special culture, belief and desire of independence and social economic development, and yet political understanding. It is native desires of the Ukrainian people. The aim of the article are generalization of theoretical approaches in relation to a concept "public opinion" and attempt to analyze her influence on socio-political life of country. A few directions of research of public opinion were formulated in the modern world. The Ukrainian scientists try revaluation essence of public opinion, interpret it from positions of modern sociological knowledge, in fact at past tenses this theme was closed. Today the sociologists of Ukraine try to investigate the role of public opinion for an association, to show her value as social institution and to define ways and principles of her forming and functioning. Such known Ukrainian scientists worked in the field of public opinion and politics. Public opinion is the phenomenon historical. Social, economic, political, ideological his operating conditions change on the measure of development of civilization, human society, his functions become complicated, a role and status change in life of society. In the process of forming of public opinion certain intercommunications are distinguished between his transmitters. The process of forming of public opinion is multidimensional He is based on specific interests and on differences in knowledge, culture, being informed of people. Thus, it is possible to assert that public opinion ‒ it the phenomenon of mass consciousness of people, she is formed and develops together with development of society, and development of society depends on rights freedoms of citizens, that create this society. And as citizens elect the organs of rule and enter to them, then they influence on socio-political life countries.

Malaysian and Mainland Chinese Social Network Community Users’ Perceptions on Post-Mh370 Incident

Aside from the world-of-mouth generated by popular portals and forums, the quality of an opinion community also affects their social media users’ perception on certain topics. The advent of social media technologies has dramatically changed the scene in the information world. When Malaysia Airlines flight MH370 went missing, the flow of information experienced complexity uncertainty and ambiguity in terms of information adequacy. Social media plays a vital role in building on a framework of re-trust and friendly perception towards Malaysia Airlines. This paper aims to compare social media users’ perception of the Malaysia Airlines missing flight MH370 incident in Mainland China and Malaysia respectively. It reveals a significant difference in user perception of active social media in these two countries. This paper argues that social networking sites, such as Facebook in Malaysia, Weibo and Wechat in Mainland China, become the public opinion field which illustrates sorts of openness and negotiation in Malaysia and Mainland China. In the law enforcement and emergency response community, the historical perception of social media was that it was an alternative option. However, the ubiquity of social media use and the role of social media as the front line of communications in a crisis event has changed that perception. In 2018, 200 questionnaires were collected from respondents in Mainland China and Malaysia respectively. The survey results contributed to the mechanism of crisis communication for henceforth similar incidents in the future. There is no doubt that the portrait of Malaysia Airlines on social media in these two countries affected its organizational reputation. Nevertheless, the participants from Malaysia and Mainland China showed a very average level of confidence to empower themselves to enhance dialog capacity among various stakeholders for this incident.

Effectiveness of Trust Repair Strategies in the Crisis of Corporate Internet Public Opinion

In the Internet environment, the network public opinion of corporate quality defects will cause enterprises to fall into the crisis of consumer trust. Enterprises often choose to issue announcements to deal with public opinion. Can an announcement release effectively restore trust? Are there differences in the effectiveness of different strategies in the announcement? It has become an urgent problem to be explored in the management of corporate public opinion crisis. This study takes the three corporate defect events exposed at the March 15th Evening Party as cases, and crawls the online comments and corporate response announcements on the microblogs about defect events. First, the sentiment analysis is used to calculate the emotional strength of the defect events. Secondly, the content analysis method is used to classify the trust repair strategies of the enterprise announcements. Finally, by constructing the trust repair strategy effectiveness model, the effectiveness of the trust repair strategy adopted by enterprises in different evolution stages is analyzed. The results show that in different stages of public opinion evolution, the release of response announcements can effectively enhance the emotional intensity of consumers. Moreover, in the emergency period, the relationship repair strategy is more effective; in the sustained period, the informational repair strategy is more effective; in the regression period, the functional repair strategy is more effective. Through practical cases, the research explores the effectiveness of enterprise trust repair strategy under the network public opinion crisis, expands the research content of enterprise network public opinion field, and provides strategic advice for enterprise public opinion crisis management.

Analysis of the world scientific production on public’s opinion on environmental issues

The aim of this study is to investigate the scientific production related to public attitude, behavior and acceptance of environmental issues through a bibliometric analysis. The databases Scopus was used to analyze the papers published in the subject area of environmental science. Bibliometric analysis was performed for authors, institutions, source type, document type, number of citations and countries in relation to publication year. An analysis of keywords of publications was also performed. The number of publications shows an overall exponential trend after 1965 until 2017. The most productive institution is the Wageningen University and Research Centre, followed by the Chinese Academy of Sciences Beijing Normal University. The keywords of the categories associated with "Ecology", "Sustainability,” and "Environmental Policy-Management" are the most commonly used in most studies. It seems that there is room for more intensive research on fields related to public's opinion on specific environmental issues. The findings of the research will contribute to a better understanding of the current state of the art, identifying key research areas in the field of public opinion on environmental issues and identifying future research trends and directions.

The necessity of reflection in the oral history of philosophy

The oral history of philosophy is in the process of establishing. The article argues that this discipline is fundamentally different from the oral history of philosophers because the oral history of philosophy has to produce besides the empirical data (interview texts) but also a theoretical reflection that is inherent in any form of philosophy. The core product of oral history is the living narrative of a witness, which is only a starting point for the oral history of philosophy that has to work for philosophical generalizations. This article describes for the first time four possible types of reflection in the oral history of philosophy at the empirical level: (1) at the stage of developing the plan and purpose of the interview, when the historian of philosophy identifies the type of empirical data needed to achieve the primary purpose of his research; (2) between views of an interviewer and a respondent, when the interview appears as a common reflection between those two not just as an adjustable conversation; (3) at the reflection level of the respondent (if he or she is a philosopher) preceded the interview; (4) in the mind of the reader / viewer of the interview, who is able to actively rethink ideas expressed in the interview. Types 1-3 of reflection are central to the oral history of philosophy as a discipline (type 4 is not scientific and belongs to the field of public opinion). Consequently, the result of the empirical research of the oral history of philosophy is not only the empirical data itself but also the primary reflections that need to be developed at the next theoretical stage of research. At the same time, the oral history of philosophy can be both a source of data (that is a special interviewing methodology relevant to any type of the history of philosophy), and a relatively independent discipline, the history of philosophy study primarily based on interview material.
