Unveiling the core competencies of the successful project manager through the application of multiobjective

Since the project manager (PM) has an essential role in project performance, investing in a manager's competencies means investing in the success of the manager's projects. The objective of this exploratory study was to find the core project managers' competencies composed of behaviors, skills, and knowledge that influence the project performance through four pillars: cost, quality, scope, and time. A variable selection method called the multiobjective genetic algorithm was applied to achieve this objective. The results show that, among others, emotional stability, verbal communication, knowledge in multidisciplinary topics influence project performance. These results can help in decision making when directing efforts towards recruitment and training of project management professionals. This study also contributes to scientific research in social sciences introducing the multiobjective genetic algorithm as an alternative technic for variables selection. This technic reduces the number of variables keeping the explicative power of the phenomenon analyzed.

In addition, the monitoring and controlling of the services as declared. The transition to operation project, though closing project stage explored in the analysis. Conclusion: The pharmacist prescribing system services is new initiative, part of the clinical pharmacy program. The Pharmacist prescribing system will reduce drug-related problems, improve clinical and economic outcomes of patients and the healthcare system and create patient’s safety culture at healthcare organization; it is highly recommended to implement in Saudi Arabia. External Factors of Delay That Affect the Performance of International Construction Contractors in Kuwait

As the construction industry in Kuwait develops, the need for international contractors to handle and manage these projects rises as well. Currently, 70% of the projects in Kuwait get delayed, some by internal factors, and some by external ones. Thus, the purpose of this research is to provide a framework for international construction contractors in Kuwait regarding the external factors of delay that they might face in their projects. External factors of delay are a newly generated type of delays that represent all the delays that are beyond the contractor’s control and cannot be anticipated in the project. In this research, the most important and frequently occurring external factors of delay were extracted and discussed with 15 project management professionals to elaborate their perspectives and construct a survey to evaluate the impact and frequency of these delaying factors in the construction industry in Kuwait. This survey was distributed to 80 project management practitioners; then, the outcomes were analyzed by using the Relative Importance Index methodology to rank the effect of the examined delaying factors. Hence this research will provide international construction contractors with an illustration of the delaying factors that they should focus on and the ones they can pay less attention to them.

Effective Project Management for Sustainable Rural Development in Africa

There has been a shift in development focus to rural areas mainly due to the realization that rural areas can no longer be neglected given that rural and urban areas have become critically interdependent. Attendant to this has been the phenomenon of many development agencies increasingly turning to projects as a critical wheel upon which sustainable rural development can be realized. However, many projects that are meant for rural development do not succeed to fulfill this goal for which the projects are designed and implemented. This article is partly based on an empirical study that explored challenges of managing rural development projects with reference to 4 case studies that were conducted in Vihiga County of Kenya in 2016. This article takes a qualitative approach. Secondary data from various journal articles and research reports that were purposively selected were reviewed. Document review was the main data collection method while data analysis was done using content analysis. This article finds that largely, inherent challenges of conventional stakeholder-participation models, failure to apply project management principles and lack of project management skills inevitably curtails not only rural development projects; but also all other projects from fostering the much needed development for which the projects are planned and implemented. This article also finds that there is an alternative stakeholder-participation model as well as various approaches that can be applied to enhance effective management of rural projects. This article recommends that projects ought to be managed by professional project managers as a key variable of ensuring that value for investment in development projects is attained. The alternative recommendation is that all non-professional project managers should be trained on the basic skills, tools and techniques of project management.

Systematization of absorptive capacity microprocesses for knowledge identification in project management

PurposeThis study aims to systematize the acquisition phase of absorptive capacity microprocesses that contribute to project management (PM) knowledge identification.Design/methodology/approachAn exploratory and descriptive qualitative research was adopted. The first stage consisted of building the conceptual framework based on four systematic-literature-reviews. The data collection process in the second phase involved in-depth interviews, which are adequate to understand the interviewee’s reality. The sample composition consisted of 15 respondents who are PM professionals with an average of 15 years of experience. Each interviewee was chosen based on their expertise and ability to transmit the entire management process of several projects. The data were analyzed using the Atlas. Tecnology information software following the grounded theory technique with three coding cycles: open, axial and selective.FindingsBased on the results, the authors organized the microprocesses into three groups: events, social interaction and the use of tools and techniques.Research limitations/implicationsThe primary limitation of the study was the number of respondents. Future studies will be able to identify other microprocesses and evaluate their role in the knowledge identification process.Practical implicationsThis study presents a systematization of microprocesses in knowledge identification, as it occurs in the context of PM. Based on the results of this study, organizations will be able to choose the microprocesses that best fit their operations and activities according to the complexity, innovation and/or criticality of their projects.Originality/valueThe systematic literature review revealed a gap in the knowledge identification phase of knowledge management as it pertains to PM. Thus, this study presents a systematization of how knowledge identification occurs in the context of PM.

Flow as a Predictor of Project Success

Projects are the vehicles by which organizations achieve their overarching strategies. Projects initially were external to the traditional organizations (e.g., construction of a new office building versus an accounts payable function). Rapidly advancing technology, aggressive global competition, shortened delivery cycles and the global economic business environments have rendered delivering successful projects paramount to an organization’s existence. Utilization of projects to successfully deliver both internal and external outputs is ever more important. Contributing to this movement are improved systems and software, management techniques and availability of trained professional project managers. These factors are increasing the speed and delivery of successful projects. Advanced tools, techniques and methodologies are of critical importance in the world of project management. Unfortunately, a high percentage of projects still fail to meet their stated objectives even with the advent of advanced project techniques and tools. Of crucial importance is the human element. Project activities are performed by people. The individuals in a project scenario carry the flag for success or the torch for failure. This actual experience begs the question: What can be done to improve the likelihood of projects achieving their stated objectives? It is in this context that the concept of flow is introduced. Flow is defined as that moment of human engagement when results exceed expected norms, time loses relevancy, and individuals operate at an optimal level of human performance. This manuscript describes flow, its effect on project success, and how it can be cultivated in a project environment.

The Competence of Project Team Members and Success Factors with Open Innovation

The purpose of this paper is to examine the relationship between emotional, managerial, and intellectual competence of team members, which refer to the LDQ (Leadership Development Questionnaire) and impact on project success. (1) Background: Large and complex projects are being conducted in a dynamic business environment. The need for capabilities and managerial aspects of participants of the project for business performance increases. (2) Methods: A questionnaire survey was conducted on 164 project management professionals in various industries from Korea. The structural equation modeling technique was performed to establish the effect of competence of team members on project success factor. (3) Results: The results provided empirical support for the impact of team members’ competencies on project success factor. Moreover, there is no difference in the perception of the impact of team members’ competencies on project success factor, depending on their roles, such as project manager and team member. (4) Results: In this paper, the importance of the competence of team members in accordance with the project manager was presented. The findings of this study suggest the strategic direction of the members at this point when corporate innovation is needed.

The chief project officer: a new executive role for turbulent times

PurposeWhile it is common for most C-suite executives to have substantial project responsibilities, many do not have a strong understanding of project management leading to significant failures. As projects are the main mechanisms for implementing changes, project performance has disproportional impact on the competitiveness and viability of organizations. This paper aims to attempt to raise awareness of the Chief Project Officer (CPO) role and lay out important skills and capabilities that are needed for managers to ascend to this role as well as key topics of concern when preparing the mindset to be a successful CPO.Design/methodology/approachThe authors have based this research on reviewing publications from the project management journals and publications, interviews of project management professionals and drawing from our industry experience in the field of project management.FindingsMost organizations have project managers, either formal or informal, to lead projects. As project environment intensifies across industries, larger organizations rely on a project executives and project management office to oversee projects and performance of C-suite tasks. However, these projects and project management office (PMO) managers often lacks the authority and legitimacy to fully carry out the expected function. This is a clear gap in organizational management, and the gap is growing as more resources are dedicated to projects. Many organizations are equipped with the human resource to develop a CPO, the authors identify five main skills and 20 key topics that are crucial to the success of this vital role.Originality/valueWhile the awareness of the CPO is still in its infancy, most organizations have equivalent or emerging senior project executive roles that may evolve and become CPOs. Today, organizations are increasingly pushed to pursue project-oriented structures to a rapidly changing environment, global market and fast-paced technological advances. It is likely that the CPO role will grow and become a crucial component in top management teams in the coming years to help organizations in moving forward to achieve their strategic goals and objectives.

Project management education in Croatia

Since today's dynamic and competitive business environment increasingly requires additional level of competence, the project manager is, certainly, a profession whose value and demand is growing. As to reach the project objective, the project manager should have an adequate education, which is the reason why the corporations, especially in the Information Technology (IT) industry, are among leaders in investment to project management education and certification. The aim of this paper is to contribute to the identification and understanding of the project management education model in Croatia and explore possibilities for its improvements, especially in the field of the project management in the IT industry. For that reason, through 2018 and 2019, authors conducted the research on availability of project management education programs in Croatia, opportunities for international certification as well as attitudes of the project management professionals in IT sector on the existing education model. The study suggests that there is a growing trend of project managers’ certification, especially in the IT industry, as well as a variety of informal programs for project management education. Simultaneously, there is a lack of project management university study programs. Empirical results show that project management study programs lack the practical segment and are, in most cases, offering only fundamental theoretical knowledge. Therefore, authors, on the basis of the literature review and analysis of IT sector needs assessment, provide recommendations of the domains, to be included into future university study programs.

Why Take PMP Rather than Prince2 in Project Management in Saudi Arabia?

Many government ministries and private organizations in Saudi Arabia are starting to require project management certifications for their managers. Both the Project Management Professional (PMP) and the Projects IN Controlled Environments (PRINCE2) certifications are an industry-recognized qualification for project managers. Today, the Project Management Institute (PMI) has more than 300 chapters in over 80 countries, while AXELOS is a joint venture company between the UK Cabinet Office and Capita Plc. This paper shows why the marketplace in Saudi Arabia is demanding PMP rather than PRINCE2. The aim of this study is to contribute to such literature by understanding the dominance of PMP in project management in Saudi Arabia.

Abstract:Objective: To declare the clinical compounding service as new initiatives in Saudi Arabia. Methods: It is a new initiative project of clinical compounding service. The projects drove the international clinical compounding service guidelines, the global business model, and pharmacy project guidelines a new project. The initial project is written through project management professionals and contained several parts, including the initial phase, the planning phase, the execution phase, the monitoring and controlling phase. Results: The clinical compounding service defined vision, mission, and goals. The services had multiple benefits, including clinical and economical, on the healthcare system, as described in the review. The continuation of the services assured by risk management elements description. Moreover, the monitoring and controlling of the projects as illustrated. The transition to operation project though the closing project stage explored in the analysis. Conclusion: The clinical compounding service program is a new initiative project in pharmacy practice. The new project is part of innovative pharmacy practice and projecting of new extemporaneous preparations, and it is highly suggested in the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia. Global Project Management - Chinese and American Cultural Differences

This paper investigates cultural differences between Chinese and American project managers in the IT industry through a pilot study of interviewing six professional project managers with qualitative and quantitative questions. The interview questions were developed to compare core Chinese values and cultural styles with American cultural styles. Initial results found that Chinese and American project managers in the IT industry have similar ideas regarding resistance to corruption but have differences toward the idea of trustworthiness, harmony, avoiding confrontation, and non- competition.

Book Review: Project Management in Libraries: On Time, On Budget, On Target

Project management is not about managing projects, and Searcy’s well-written book succinctly demonstrates the difference. Searcy, a certified project management professional (PMP), states, “limited endeavors that create a unique product or service are projects” (p. 1). More formerly, “then project management must be the use of organizational resources to create a unique product or service that achieves organizational objectives” (p. 2).

BIM PERSONNEL: FROM USERS TO MANAGERS

The article highlights the importance and timeliness for Ukraine of required implementation of BIM technologies in design and construction. The expediency of "BIM-standard" for modern architectural bureaus and construction companies all over the world in the design, construction and operation of objects is announced. The introduction of innovative BIM technology in the project organizations and the emergence of new roles from the specialists of higher, middle and lower qualification: BIM-manager, BIM-coordinator, BIM-user.The hierarchy of basic responsibilities and functions of BIM managers is discussed in detail. Implementation process management, BIM manager application management at the company level. Assisting the BIM-manager in the modeling part and advising the users on the project development by the BIM-coordinator. Layout of drawings, gradual training of simple modeling by the beginning BIM-user. At the same time there is a shortage of personnel in Ukraine with a deep knowledge of BIM technologies. Establishment of specialized courses and trainings for "education" and integration of professional BIM project managers. However, in the development of such technologies by the leading universities of Ukraine, there are significant shortcomings - obtaining only basic skills of developing an architectural model without systematic information content, accounting for interaction resources in the BIM environment, project diagnostics.It is proposed to involve experienced professionals in real design, leading profile institutions, training and experimental centers to form an in-depth specialized training course for senior specialists. Expanding the use of BIM and supporting the practice of companies-distributors of such software (Autodesk, Bentley, Graphisoft, Nemetschek, Tekla), the activity of the initiative platform for the implementation of BIM in Ukraine within the Architectural Club, KBU and BIM-Community.The training of BIM managers requires a shortened or expanded program, depending on the experience and preparedness of the specialists. For example, arranging education at a specialized university, advanced training or other post-graduate courses at licensed training centers. At the same time, it provides coverage of modeling training, setting up teamwork, project administration, quality control, effective organization of BIM processes in own activities and in the company as a whole. This defines the content, stages and specifics of the program of the staff development - architects, designers, engineers and other specialists to BIM-reality, with subsequent testing and certification.
