Evaluation and Analysis of the Accuracy of Open-Source Software and Online Services for PPP Processing in Static Mode

It has been proven that precise point positioning (PPP) is a well-established technique to obtain high-precision positioning in the order between centimeters and millimeters. In this context, different studies have been carried out to evaluate the performance of PPP in static mode as a possible alternative to the relative method. However, only a few studies have evaluated the performance of a large number of different open-source software programs and have focused extensively on online free PPP services. Therefore, in this paper, a comprehensive comparison of processing in static mode between different open-source software and the online free PPP services is developed. For the evaluation, different GNSS observation files collected at 45 International GNSS Service (IGS) stations distributed worldwide were processed in static PPP mode. Within this frame of reference, ten open-source PPP software and five online free PPP services were studied. The results from the processing strategy demonstrate that it is possible to obtain precision in the order of millimeters with both open-source software and online PPP services. In addition, online PPP services experienced better performance than some other specialized PPP software. In summary, the results show that the daily solutions for the E (East), N (North), and U (Up) components estimated by the ten open-source software and by the five online free PPP services can reach millimeter precision for some stations. Among the open-source software, the PRIDE-PPPAR presented the best performance with a Root Mean Square Error (RMSE) of 5.52, 5.40, and 6.79 mm in the E, N, and U components, respectively. Alternatively, in the case of the online free PPP services, the APPS and CSRS-PPP produced the most accurate results, with RMSE values less than 12 mm for the three components. Finally, the open-source software and online free PPP services experienced similar positioning performance in the horizontal and vertical components, demonstrating that both can be implemented in static mode without compromising the accuracy of the measurement.

Investigating the Impacts of Ionospheric Irregularities on Precise Point Positioning Over China and Its Mechanism

AbstractThe impacts of ionospheric irregularities on precise point positioning (PPP) have been commonly noticed in the field of the ionosphere and the precise application of the Global Navigation Satellite System. But few attentions have been paid to how ionospheric irregularities deteriorate the performance of PPP. Aiming at exploring the mechanism of degradation of PPP solutions during the period of ionospheric irregularities, this paper investigates the impacts of ionospheric irregularities on the performance of kinematic PPP. The experiment uses GPS observation data sampled at the 30‐s interval over China on the days of 2014, 2015, and 2017 covering some active space weather, for example, solar and geomagnetic activities. The results show that the ionospheric irregularities caused increased positioning errors (decimeter‐ to meter‐level), enlarged phase residuals (decimeter‐level), and increased the number of detected cycle slips in PPP processing in low latitude regions of China. By proposing a novel strategy that compares the number of detected cycle slips from 30 s‐sampling interval data and 1s‐sampling interval data at the same station in an “aligned” mode, we present direct evidence of the existence of the falsely detected cycle slips in 30 s‐sampling interval data by the traditional cycle‐slip detection threshold in PPP processing. We reveal that the unnecessary and frequent reinitialization of ambiguity induced by the falsely detected cycle slips is dominantly responsible for the degradation of kinematic PPP solutions during the period of ionospheric irregularities. Our findings pointed out the direction for the improvement of kinematic PPP performance in the environment of ionospheric irregularities.

Analyses of GLONASS and GPS+GLONASS Precise Positioning Performance in Different Latitude Regions

The orbital inclination angle of the GLONASS constellation is about 10° larger than that of GPS, Galileo, and BDS. Theoretically, the higher orbital inclination angle could provide better observation geometry in high latitude regions. A wealth of research has investigated the positioning accuracy of GLONASS and its impact on multi-GNSS, but rarely considered the contribution of the GLONASS constellation’s large orbit inclination angle. The performance of GLONASS in different latitude regions is evaluated in both stand-alone mode and integration with GPS in this paper. The performance of GPS is also presented for comparison. Three international GNSS service (IGS) networks located in high, middle, and low latitudes are selected for the current study. Multi-GNSS data between January 2021 and June 2021 are used for the assessment. The data quality check shows that the GLONASS data integrity is significantly lower than that of GPS. The constellation visibility analysis indicates that GLONASS has a much better elevation distribution than GPS in high latitude regions. Both daily double-difference network solutions and daily static Precise Point Positioning (PPP) solutions are evaluated. The statistical analysis of coordinate estimates indicates that, in high latitude regions, GLONASS has a comparable or even better accuracy than that of GPS, and GPS+GLONASS presents the best estimate accuracy; in middle latitude regions, GPS stand-alone constellation provides the best positioning accuracy; in low latitude regions, GLONASS offers the worst accuracy, but the positioning accuracy of GPS+GLONASS is better than that of GPS. The tropospheric estimates of GLONASS do not present a resemblance regional advantage as coordinate estimates, which is worse than that of GPS in all three networks. The PPP processing with combined GPS and GLONASS observations reduces the convergence time and improves the accuracy of tropospheric estimates in all three networks.

High rate GNSS kinematic PPP method performance for monitoring the engineering structures: Shake table tests under different satellite configurations

This paper is focused on the performance of Global Navigation Satellite System (GNSS) Kinematic Precise Point Positioning (PPP) methods for monitoring the engineering structures based on harmonic oscillation tests using a single-axis shake table. To examine the performance of kinematic PPP methods, shake table oscillated harmonically for different amplitudes and frequencies. Data were processed using the online Canadian Spatial Reference System Precise Point Positioning (CSRS-PPP) service. Results were analyzed by time series analysis and Fast Fourier transform techniques. The kinematic PPP method's accuracy under different satellite configurations was determined by comparing the frequency and amplitude values obtained by PPP processing with the linear variable differential transformer (LVDT) results. As a result of experiments, the effectiveness of the multi-GNSS high-rate kinematic PPP methods in determining the structural movements were demonstrated and the frequencies of the structural movements could be determined exactly and their amplitudes with a maximum difference of 3.9 mm.

Enabling ambiguity resolution in CSRS‐PPP

<h3>Abstract</h3> Precise point positioning (PPP) uses precise satellite orbits, clock corrections and biases derived from a global network of reference stations to enable accurate positioning worldwide. Natural Resources Canada’s Canadian Spatial Reference System (CSRS) PPP is a free Web service offering automated PPP processing. A critical factor limiting the adoption of PPP in many applications is the convergence time needed to reach centimeter-level accuracies. To address this issue, CSRS-PPP now implements PPP with ambiguity resolution (PPP-AR). This feature required the development of new algorithms, such as sequential normal stacking for least-squares filtering/smoothing, and the weighted integer decision concept for ambiguity validation. New satellite product lines (ultra-rapid, rapid, final) also have been deployed to enable PPP-AR processing with various latencies. This analysis demonstrates that sub-centimeter horizontal accuracies can be obtained in less than one hour for both static and kinematic modes. Using product lines with longer latencies is beneficial, although improvements are typically within the reported uncertainties.

Conditioning and PPP processing of smartphone GNSS measurements in realistic environments

Smartphones typically compute position using duty-cycled Global Navigation Satellite System (GNSS) L1 code measurements and Single Point Positioning (SPP) processing with the aid of cellular and other measurements. This internal positioning solution has an accuracy of several tens to hundreds of meters in realistic environments (handheld, vehicle dashboard, suburban, urban forested, etc.). With the advent of multi-constellation, dual-frequency GNSS chips in smartphones, along with the ability to extract raw code and carrier-phase measurements, it is possible to use Precise Point Positioning (PPP) to improve positioning without any additional equipment. This research analyses GNSS measurement quality parameters from a Xiaomi MI 8 dual-frequency smartphone in varied, realistic environments. In such environments, the system suffers from frequent phase loss-of-lock leading to data gaps. The smartphone measurements have low and irregular carrier-to-noise (C/N0) density ratio and high multipath, which leads to poor or no positioning solution. These problems are addressed by implementing a prediction technique for data gaps and a C/N0-based stochastic model for assigning realistic a priori weights to the observables in the PPP processing engine. Using these conditioning techniques, there is a 64% decrease in the horizontal positioning Root Mean Square (RMS) error and 100% positioning solution availability in sub-urban environments tested. The horizontal and 3D RMS were 20 cm and 30 cm respectively in a static open-sky environment and the horizontal RMS for the realistic kinematic scenario was 7 m with the phone on the dashboard of the car, using the SwiftNav Piksi Real-Time Kinematic (RTK) solution as reference. The PPP solution, computed using the YorkU PPP engine, also had a 5–10% percentage point more availability than the RTK solution, computed using RTKLIB software, since missing measurements in the logged file cause epoch rejection and a non-continuous solution, a problem which is solved by prediction for the PPP solution. The internal unaided positioning solution of the phone obtained from the logged NMEA (The National Marine Electronics Association) file was computed using point positioning with the aid of measurements from internal sensors. The PPP solution was 80% more accurate than the internal solution which had periodic drifts due to non-continuous computation of solution.

An Innovative Approach to Accuracy of Co-Seismic Surface Displacement Detection Using Satellite GNSS Technology

This paper discusses a new method for determining co-seismic displacement using the Global Navigation Satellite System (GNSS) for the precise detection of positional changes at permanent stations after an earthquake. Positioning by the Precise Point Positioning (PPP) method is undertaken using data from the GNSS satellites and one designated station. A time series is processed by an anharmonic analysis before and after an earthquake and these one-day solutions increase the accuracy of measurements. The co-seismic static displacement can be precisely detected from the analysed time series before and after the earthquake, which can be used for the verification of seismic models. Reliability of the estimation of the size of the co-seismic offset is given by the mean square error (RMSE) of the shift. In this study, RMSE was determined by two approaches, initially from variances within PPP processing, and secondly when no positional change from the GNSS before or after the earthquake was assumed. The variance of the data in the time series gives a more realistic estimate of RMSE. This dual approach can affect seismological interpretation due to the need for the interpreting geophysicists to determine which case of co-seismic displacement is more probable for any given locality. The second approach has been shown to provide a more realistic co-seismic displacement accuracy in this study.

Assessment and Analysis of the Four-Satellite QZSS Precise Point Positioning and the Integrated Data Processing With GPS

The Quasi-Zenith Satellite System (QZSS), which serves Japan and its surrounding areas, is a regional navigation satellite system developed by Japan Aerospace Exploration Agency. The system is now in a four-satellite constellation with preliminary standalone navigation and positioning capabilities. In this paper, the performance of QZSS-only precise point positioning (PPP) in both static and kinematic modes is initially evaluated using the datasets spanning 11 days from 11 tracking stations in Asia-Pacific regions and the final precise orbit and clock products from the analysis centers GFZ and WUM. For completeness, the GPS/QZSS integrated data processing with GFZ and WUM final products as well as the L6E real-time orbit and clock corrections is also analyzed. The results indicate that the static positioning accuracy of QZSS-only PPP is approximately 4, 2 and 15 cm in the east, north and up directions, respectively, and the static convergence time of QZSS-only PPP with WUM and GFZ products can be 75.2, 44.3 and 45.6 min, and 153.5, 201.6 and 162.8 min in the three directions, respectively. As for the QZSS-only kinematic PPP solutions, the re-convergence repeatedly occurs due to limited available satellites. To achieve more reliable solutions, the inter-system bias parameter in GPS/QZSS PPP processing is recommended to be estimated as random walk process or white noise process. The improvement of post-processed GPS/QZSS PPP over GPS-only case is marginal on position accuracies, but can be several minutes on convergence time. Compared with post-processed GPS/QZSS PPP, the real-time one achieves worse position accuracies but comparable convergence time.

Performance Evaluation of Real-Time Precise Point Positioning with Both BDS-3 and BDS-2 Observations.

For time-critical precise applications, one popular technology is the real-time precise point positioning (PPP). In recent years, there has been a rapid development in the BeiDou Navigation Satellite System (BDS), and the constellation of global BDS (BDS-3) has been fully deployed. In addition to the regional BDS (BDS-2) constellation, the real-time stream CLK93 has started to support the BDS-3 constellation, indicating that the real-time PPP processing involving BDS-3 observations is feasible. In this study, the global positioning performance of real-time PPP with BDS-3/BDS-2 observations is initially evaluated using the datasets from 147 stations. In the east, north and upward directions, positioning accuracy of 1.8, 1.2 and 2.5 cm in the static mode, and of 6.7, 5.1 and 10.4 cm in the kinematic mode can be achieved for the BDS-3/BDS-2 real-time PPP, respectively, while the corresponding convergence time with a threshold of 10 cm is 32.9, 23.7 and 32.8 min, and 66.9, 42.9 and 69.1 min in the two modes in the three directions, respectively. To complete this, the availability of BDS-3/BDS-2 constellations, the quality of BDS-3/BDS-2 real-time precise satellite products, and the BDS-3/BDS-2 post-processed PPP solutions are also analyzed. For comparison, the results for the GPS are also presented.

Assimilation of GPS Zenith Total Delay estimates in RAMS NWP model: Impact studies over central Italy

The purpose of the data assimilation is to use all the available information to determine as accurately as possible the state of the atmosphere. In this context we consider the assimilation of the GPS-ZTD (Global Positioning System – Zenith Total Delay) by a nudging scheme in Regional Atmospheric Modeling System at Institute of Atmospheric Sciences and Climate ([email protected]) at medium horizontal resolution (5 km). The water vapour mixing ratio (qv) given by the [email protected] is perturbed according to the differences between observed and simulated ZTD. To verify the impact of the GPS-ZTD data assimilation on the representation of the atmospheric humidity field, especially at the local scale, a numerical experiment was performed over central Italy area, over a one-month time frame. The studied network consists of 41 geodetic receivers and 3 single frequency receivers, this latter category of receivers has turned up more and more in marketing for the very low cost with respect to high level of performance. For what concerns all devices, processing was carried out in PPP (Precise Point Positioning) using goGPS, an Open Source Program Package for GNSS Positioning. For the application of PPP processing to single-frequency receivers, goSEID method (an alternative implementation of the SEID approach integrated in the goGPS open source software) was applied; the algorithm, starting from the observations of a unique (or more) dual frequency “reference” receiver, is able to generate L2 synthetic observations for any single frequency receiver located in its surroundings (15–20 km).

MULTI-GNSS PPP: An Alternative Positioning Technique for Establishing Ground Control Points

Traditionally, ground control points (GCPs) are utilized to determine absolute image orientations indirectly in aerial triangulation. For a long time, differential and relative GNSS (Global Navigation Satellite System) positioning techniques have been extensively used to establish GCPs. In our country, the establishment and measurement of GCPs are instructed in the related regulation based on differential GNSS techniques. One of the two methods described in the related regulation is based on establishing, at least, C3 level networks with maximum base length of 10 km and with minimum 35-minute observation time. In an alternative method, without base length restriction, GCP coordinates can be determined being connected to at least 3 TUSAGA-Active stations and with minimum 120-minute static observation. The expected precision for the coordinates of GCPs are described to be better than 5 cm in horizontal and 6 cm in vertical within the regulation. Although differential techniques can provide highly accurate positioning solutions, they are required at least two receivers to mitigate GNSS error sources. Additionally, positioning accuracy obtained from these techniques are strictly dependent on the distance from reference stations. It is clear that all these raise the operational cost and system complexity of differential GNSS techniques. In recent years, Precise Point Positioning (PPP), which enables centimeter- or millimeter-level positioning accuracy with only one receiver on a global scale, has emerged as an alternative positioning method. Over the last decade, PPP has attracted considerable attention within the GNSS community due to its exceptional benefits such as operational simplicity, cost-effectiveness, elimination of base station requirement. However, the main drawback of PPP is relatively long observation period required to achieve a specific positioning accuracy, for example, nearly 50 min to reach 10 cm or better horizontal accuracy with 30 seconds sampling rate. On the other hand, the completion of GLONASS constellation and the emergence of new satellite systems, such as Galileo and BeiDou, offers considerable opportunities to improve the PPP performance. The combinations of different GNSS constellations, namely multi-GNSS, strength the number and geometry of visible satellites, and therefore, reduces the convergence time significantly. Additionally, the new generation GNSS receivers make possible to collect more observations (even up to 100Hz), which provides abundant data for PPP processing. Taking all these into account, the principal objective of this study is to investigate the usability of PPP in establishing GCPs for aerial triangulation. For this purpose, an experimental test was conducted to evaluate the positioning performance of multi-GNSS PPP with high-frequency GNSS receivers (1 Hz). The results indicate that 5 cm or better horizontal and vertical positioning accuracy can be achieved by multi-GNSS PPP process within approximately 30 minutes using high-frequency GNSS receivers. Considering these results and its operational simplicity, it can be said that PPP is a robust alternative for the establishment of GCPs.

Multi-GNSS fractional cycle bias products generation for GNSS ambiguity-fixed PPP at Wuhan University

The School of Geodesy and Geomatics (SGG) at Wuhan University has been generating GPS fractional cycle bias (FCB) products for users to realize ambiguity-fixed precise point positioning (PPP) since 2015. Along with the development of multiple Global Navigation Satellite Systems (GNSS), there is an urgent need to provide multi-GNSS FCB products for the PPP ambiguity resolution (AR) with multi-constellation observations. This study focuses on the multi-GNSS FCB estimation, in which the FCB products of GPS, Galileo, BDS and QZSS are generated. We describe here the detailed estimation method and the significant improvements to the new service. The FCB quality, as well as the PPP AR performance, is evaluated. The mean standard deviations of wide-lane FCBs relative to CODE are 0.019, 0.005, 0.015 and 0.008 cycles, while those of narrow-lane are 0.021, 0.021, 0.057 and 0.010 cycles for GPS, Galileo, BDS and QZSS, respectively. The comparison with CNES GPS and Galileo FCBs indicates their good consistency with the corresponding FCBs. Compared with GPS-only PPP AR, the convergence time and time to first fix of the four-system PPP AR can be reduced by 27.3 and 29.4% in the static mode, respectively, while the corresponding improvements are 42.6 and 51.9% in the kinematic mode, respectively. These results demonstrate that our SGG FCB service can provide high-precision and reliable four-system FCB corrections for worldwide users to conduct ambiguity-fixed PPP processing.

Detection of Structural Vibration with High-Rate Precise Point Positioning: Case Study Results Based on 100 Hz Multi-GNSS Observables and Shake-Table Simulation.

This contribution presents and assesses the methodology aiming at the characterization of the structural vibrations with high-rate GNSS measurements. As commonly employed precise point positioning (PPP) based on ionosphere-free linear combination of undifferenced signals may not meet the high requirements in terms of displacement precision, a modified processing strategy has been proposed. The algorithms were implemented in the own-developed GNSS processing software and validated using the designed experiment. For this purpose, we have set up a field experiment taking advantage of the prototype shake-table, which simulated the dynamic horizontal displacements of the GNSS antenna. The device ensured a periodic motion of the antenna with modifiable characteristics, namely amplitude and frequency. In this experiment, we have set the amplitudes from 1.5 to 9 mm and the frequency to 3.80 Hz. As a dataset, we have used 100 Hz GPS, Galileo, and BDS measurements. The results confirmed a high applicability of the enhanced PPP processing strategy for precise displacement detection. Specifically, it was feasible to obtain the dynamic displacements with precision at the level of millimeters. The differences between the PPP-derived amplitude and the true amplitude of the simulated displacements were in the range of 0.5–1.3 mm, whereas the difference between the detected and benchmark frequency did not exceed 0.026 Hz. Hence, the proposed methodology allows meeting the specific demands of structural displacement monitoring.

A Strategy to Mitigate the Ionospheric Scintillation Effects on BDS Precise Point Positioning: Cycle-Slip Threshold Model

Because of the special design of BeiDou navigation satellite system (BDS) constellation, the effects of ionospheric scintillation on operational BDS generally are more serious than on the global positioning system (GPS). As BDS is currently providing global services, it is increasingly important to seek strategies to mitigate the scintillation effects on BDS navigation and positioning services. In this study, an improved cycle-slip threshold model is proposed to decrease the high false-alarm rate of cycle-slips under scintillation conditions, thus avoiding the frequent unnecessary ambiguity resets in BDS precise point positioning (PPP) solution. We use one-year (from 23 March 2015 to 23 March 2016) BDS dataset from Hong Kong Sha Tin (HKST) station (22.4°N, 114.2°E; geomagnetic latitude: 15.4°N) to model the cycle-slip threshold and try to make it suitable for three types of BDS satellites and multiple scintillation levels. The availability of our mitigation strategy is validated by using three months (from 1 September 2015 to 30 November 2015) BDS dataset collected at 10 global navigation satellite system (GNSS) stations in Hong Kong. Positioning results demonstrate that our mitigated BDS PPP can prevent the sudden fluctuations of positioning errors induced by the ionospheric scintillation. Statistical results of BDS PPP experiments show that the mitigated solution can maintain an accuracy of about 0.08 m and 0.10 m in the horizontal and vertical components, respectively. Compared with standard BDS PPP, the accuracy of mitigated PPP can be improved by approximately 24.1%, 38.2%, and 47.9% in the east, north, and up directions, respectively. Our study demonstrates that considering different scintillation levels to establish appropriate cycle-slip threshold model in PPP processing can efficiently mitigate the ionospheric scintillation effects on BDS PPP.

Multi-GNSS precise point positioning with next-generation smartphone measurements

ABSTRACT This study evaluates the feasibility of achieving improved positioning accuracy with raw GNSS measurements from recently released smartphones. Using Precise Point Positioning (PPP) as the processing mode, positioning accuracy of selected newly available devices are analyzed. These devices include Xiaomi Mi8, Google Pixel 3, Huawei Mate 20 and Samsung Galaxy S9. The key research questions to be answered are: (1) Given the hardware limitations, what PPP processing changes can be implemented to make use of the raw measurements? (2) What is the best performance that can be achieved with multi-GNSS PPP given the usage of the smartphones by the user?

Influence of stochastic modeling for inter-system biases on multi-GNSS undifferenced and uncombined precise point positioning

The focus of this study is on proper modeling of the dynamics for inter-system biases (ISBs) in multi-constellation Global Navigation Satellite System (GNSS) precise point positioning (PPP) processing. First, the theoretical derivation demonstrates that the ISBs originate from not only the receiver-dependent hardware delay differences among different GNSSs but also the receiver-independent time differences caused by the different clock datum constraints among different GNSS satellite clock products. Afterward, a comprehensive evaluation of the influence of ISB stochastic modeling on undifferenced and uncombined PPP performance is conducted, i.e., random constant, random walk process, and white noise process are considered. We use data based on a 1-month period (September 2017) Multi-GNSS Experiment (MGEX) precise orbit and clock products from four analysis centers (CODE, GFZ, CNES, and WHU) and 160 MGEX tracking stations. The results demonstrate that generally, the positioning performance of PPP in terms of convergence time and positioning accuracy with the final products from CODE, CNES, and WHU is comparable among the three ISB handling schemes. However, estimating ISBs as random walk process or white noise process outperforms that as the random constant when using the GFZ products. These results indicate that the traditional estimation of ISBs as the random constant may not always be reasonable in multi-GNSS PPP processing. To achieve more reliable positioning results, it is highly recommended to consider the ISBs as random walk process or white noise process in multi-GNSS PPP processing.

Análisis de los residuales en el calculo de velocidades geocentricas a partir de series de tiempo diarias PPP

El procesamiento de observaciones GNSS en línea ha venido en aumento en los útlimos años. Diferentes servicios como el ofrecido por el Canadian Space Reference System (CSRS), bajo la modalidad de Posicionamiento Puntal Preciso (PPP), brinda la posibilidad de conocer de una manera rápida y efectiva la posición tridimensional a partir de un archivo rinex. Aprovechando estos resultados, se procesaron archivos diarios por un periodo de 2,5 años y para 10 estaciones GNSS de Costa Rica integradas al Sistema de Referencia Geocéntrico para las Américas (SIRGAS). Las coordenadas geocéntricas derivadas del procesamiento PPP en línea, se consideraron como vectores de observaciones para la estimación de sus velocidades (Moya et al, 2017). No obstante, previamente se programó e implementó una prueba estadística denominada test de errores groseros (Pelzer, 1985) para la estimación de potenciales observaciones atípicas. Esta prueba es usada frecuentemente en el análisis de redes geodésicas (Knight et al, 2010), sin embargo, ahora se aplicó en el modelo lineal de cálculo de velocidades. El proceso de ajuste para el cálculo de las velociadades se hizo de manera iterativa por estación y por coordenada, excluyendo las observaciones groseras marcadas por el test en cada proceso. En promedio esta prueba detectó una serie de observaciones con residuos que variaron entre los -50 mm y los 40 mm en sus tres componentes. Finalmente con las velocidades depuradas de errores groseros se validaron respecto a la solución multianual SIR15P01 de SIRGAS, tomando como a la época de referencia 2017,0. Las diferencias promedio entre ambas determinaciones fueron de _15 mm.

Introduction of the Double-Differenced Ambiguity Resolution into Precise Point Positioning

According to the advantages of the precise point positioning (PPP) and the double-differenced (DD) model based algorithm, a new method for the integration of DD integer ambiguity resolution into PPP is presented. This method uses the undifferenced ambiguity estimated with PPP computation and the DD ambiguity generated from the DD model based algorithm to realize the PPP ambiguity fixing. In the presented method, the selection of the undifferenced ambiguity bases on the ratio test of the DD ambiguity and the ratio values based weight is used in PPP processing. This ensures the quality of the used undifferenced ambiguity. To validate the presented method, two experiments are implemented using the ten days (11 to 20 August 2014) data from local and regional reference stations and the moved two receivers. The results of the presented strategy show that improvements are achieved in all three coordinate components. The 1-h, 2-h, and 4-h PPP results indicate that the mean relative improvements were about 19%, 18%, and 15% for north, east, and up components. These results also show that prominent improvements of 29%, 31%, and 25% for north, east, and up components were obtained when the ratio values based weight was used. The application of the presented method in the displacement monitoring was implemented with the experiment and it showed that the PPP estimation computed with the presented strategy benefits local or regional displacement monitoring and improves the detecting ability for displacement.

An Optimum Strategy for Producing Precise GPS Satellite Orbits using Double-Differenced Observations

Both the double-differenced and zero-differenced GNSS positioning strategies have been widely used by the geodesists for different geodetic applications which are demanded for reliable and precise positions. A closer inspection of the requirements of these two GNSS positioning techniques, the zero-differenced positioning, which is known as Precise Point Positioning (PPP), has gained a special importance due to three main reasons. Firstly, the effective applications of PPP for geodetic purposes and precise applications depend entirely on the availability of the precise satellite products which consist of precise satellite orbital elements, precise satellite clock corrections, and Earth orientation parameters. Secondly, the PPP processing strategy has been employed by the International GNSS Service (IGS) and IGS analysis centers to evaluate their products in terms of homogeneity and precision over a long period of time. Thirdly, the precise positions, which are determined using PPP technique, and are referenced directly to the geodetic reference frame of the satellite orbital parameters. Thus, the definition of the geodetic datum of the site coordinates using different strategies plays an enormous role in the process of generation satellite orbital parameters which have to be compatible with the corresponding satellite clock corrections and the Earth orientation parameters. This study focuses on producing uninterrupted series of satellite orbit and clock products using different criteria and assesses these products using PPP. The double-difference processing technique was used to achieve the goal of this study by Bernese GPS software version 5.0. Twenty-two globally distributed IGS stations were selected to run PPP based on the generated products and then compare the results with corresponding PPP results which were created based on the IGS rapid products. The comparison pointed to a significant improvement in the generated precise products which have considerably increased the precision of positions. What is more, this study stated that there is an observable agreement between the horizontal positions accuracies which are generated using different techniques for modeling the reference frame.&#x0D;

Real-Time Precise Point Positioning Using Tomographic Wet Refractivity Fields

The tropospheric wet delay induced by water vapor is a major error source in precise point positioning (PPP), significantly influencing the convergence time to obtain high-accuracy positioning. Thus, high-quality water vapor information is necessary to support PPP processing. This study presents the use of tomographic wet refractivity (WR) fields in PPP to examine their impacts on the positioning performance. Tests are carried out based on 1-year of 2013 global navigation satellite system (GNSS) observations (30 s sampling rate) from three stations with different altitudes in the Hong Kong GNSS network. Coordinate errors with respect to reference values at a 0.1 m level of convergence is used for the north, east, and up components, whilst an error of 0.2 m is adopted for 3D position convergence. Experimental results demonstrate that, in both static and kinematic modes, the tomography-based PPP approach outperforms empirical tropospheric models in terms of positioning accuracy and convergence time. Compared with the results based on traditional, Saastamoinen, AN (Askne and Nordis), and VMF1 (Vienna Mapping Function 1) models, 23–48% improvements of positioning accuracy, and 5–30% reductions of convergence time are achieved with the application of tomographic WR fields. When using a tomography model, about 35% of the solutions converged within 20 min, whereas only 23%, 25%, 25%, and 30% solutions converged within 20 min for the traditional, Saastamoinen, AN, and VMF1 models, respectively. Our study demonstrates the benefit to real-time PPP processing brought by additional tomographic WR fields as they can significantly improve the PPP solution and reduce the convergence time for the up component.
