Photo-polymerization, swelling and mechanical properties of cellulose fibre reinforced poly(ethylene glycol) hydrogels

The application of hydrogels as load-bearing biomedical components is often limited by their mechanical properties. Often an attempt to improve a hydrogel's stiffness is accompanied by a loss of toughness and swelling properties. In this work, we show that the addition of nanofibrillated cellulose (NFC) provides a mean to tailor both the swelling and the mechanical properties of the hydrogel. Various volume fractions of NFC were added to poly(ethylene glycol) dimethacrylate (PEGDM) precursors with two different molecular weights (6 and 20 kDa). The viscosity measurements of the precursor solutions indicated that the dispersed NFCs form a network-like structure in the hydrogel precursor. Such a structure, as observed in the photo-rheology experiments, serves as a light-scattering source when the solution is illuminated by UV light, which provides a uniform polymerization of the hydrogel in three-dimension and reduces the curing time. Mechanical properties of the neat and composite hydrogels were characterized using monotonic and cyclic compression tests. NFC reinforcement increases the hydrogel's stiffness by a factor 2 and 3.5 for the PEGDM matrixes with molecular weights of 6 and 20 kDa respectively without compromising their toughness. Moreover, the desired stiffness and swelling properties can be simultaneously achieved by adapting the reinforcement concentration and the hydrogel cross-link density. The obtained composite hydrogels offer enhanced and tuneable properties and are proposed for injectable and photo-curable load-bearing implants.

Transscleral Controlled Delivery of Geranylgeranylaceton Using a Polymeric Device Protects Rat Retina Against Light Injury.

We evaluated the effects of a transscleral drug delivery device, consisting of a reservoir and controlled-release cover, which were made of photopolymerized polyethylene glycol dimethacrylate and triethylene glycol dimethacrylate, combined at different ratios. Geranylgeranylacetone (GGA), a heat-shock protein (HSP) inducer, was loaded into the device. The GGA was released from the device under zero-order kinetics. At both 1 week and 4 weeks after device implantation on rat sclera, HSP70 gene and protein expression were up-regulated in the sclera-choroid-retinal pigment epithelium fraction of rat eyes treated with the GGA-loaded device compared with rat eyes treated with saline-loaded devices or eyes of non-treated rats. Flash electroretinograms were recorded 4 days after white light exposure (8000lx for 18h). Electroretinographic amplitudes of the a- and b-waves were preserved significantly in rats treated with GGA-loaded devices compared with rats treated with saline-loaded devices. Histological examination showed that the outer nuclear layer thickness was preserved in rats that had the GGA-loaded device. These results may show that transscleral GGA delivery using our device may offer an alternative method to treat retinal diseases.

Synthesis of new photoactive urethane carbohydrates and their behavior in UV or femtosecond laser-induced two-photon polymerization

Three methacrylated glycomonomers (CMA-1–3) were synthesized, characterized, and photocrosslinked in hydrophilic conetworks. The UV photobehavior of monomers was evaluated through FTIR spectrometry using Irgacure 819/Irgacure 2959 as photoinitiator, and the results showed that Irgacure 2959 is a better photoinitiator, the conversion degree (DC) varying in the range of 69–89.2% and the maximum rate of polymerization () being ~10 s−1. The addition of poly(ethylene glycol) dimethacrylate (PEG-DMA) or benzophenone macromer (BP-UDMA) as co-monomer improved the and DC (up to 100% after 300 s of irradiation in the latter). Specific analysis (gel fraction, water uptake, morphology) of the photopolymerized networks A1–A3 (CMA-1–3/PEG-DMA) and B1–B3 (CMA-1–3/BP-UDMA) demonstrated that B1–B3 films have interconnected inner pores, with irregular shapes and different sizes. The grid structures created through the two-photon polymerization of B1–B3 formulations in the presence of Irg819 are clearer and have a controlled porosity, of relevance for promising bioapplications.

Application of clotrimazole via a novel controlled release device provides potent retinal protection.

Age-related macular degeneration is the leading cause of legal blindness among older individuals. Therefore, the development of new therapeutic agents and optimum drug delivery systems for its treatment are crucial. In this study, we investigate whether clotrimazole (CLT) is capable of protecting retinal cells against oxidative-induced injury and the possible inhibitory effect of a sustained CLT-release device against light-induced retinal damage in rats. In vitro results indicated pretreatment of immortalized retinal pigment epithelium cells (RPE-J cells) with 10–50 µM CLT before exposure to oxygen/glucose deprivation conditions for 48 h decreased the extent of cell death, attenuated the percentage of reactive oxygen species-positive cells, and decreased the levels of cleaved caspase-3. The device consists of a separately fabricated reservoir, a CLT formulation, and a controlled release cover, which are made of poly(ethyleneglycol) dimethacrylate (PEGDM) and tri(ethyleneglycol) dimethacrylate (TEGDM). The release rate of CLT was successfully tuned by changing the ratio of PEGDM/TEGDM in the cover. In vivo results showed that use of a CLT-loaded device lessened the reduction of electroretinographic amplitudes after light exposure. These findings indicate that the application of a polymeric CLT-loaded device may be a promising method for the treatment of some retinal disorders.

Fewer Bacteria Adhere to Softer Hydrogels.

Clinically, biofilm-associated infections commonly form on intravascular catheters and other hydrogel surfaces. The overuse of antibiotics to treat these infections has led to the spread of antibiotic resistance and underscores the importance of developing alternative strategies that delay the onset of biofilm formation. Previously, it has been reported that during surface contact, bacteria can detect surfaces through subtle changes in the function of their motors. However, how the stiffness of a polymer hydrogel influences the initial attachment of bacteria is unknown. Systematically, we investigated poly(ethylene glycol) dimethacrylate (PEGDMA) and agar hydrogels that were 20 times thicker than the cumulative size of bacterial cell appendages, as a function of Young's moduli. Soft (44.05-308.5 kPa), intermediate (1495-2877 kPa), and stiff (5152-6489 kPa) hydrogels were synthesized. Escherichia coli and Staphylococcus aureus attachment onto the hydrogels was analyzed using confocal microscopy after 2 and 24 h incubation periods. Independent of hydrogel chemistry and incubation time, E. coli and S. aureus attachment correlated positively to increasing hydrogel stiffness. For example, after a 24 h incubation period, there were 52 and 82% fewer E. coli adhered to soft PEGDMA hydrogels than to the intermediate and stiff PEGDMA hydrogels, respectively. A 62 and 79% reduction in the area coverage by the Gram-positive microbe S. aureus occurred after 24 h incubation on the soft versus intermediate and stiff PEGDMA hydrogels. We suggest that hydrogel stiffness is an easily tunable variable that could potentially be used synergistically with traditional antimicrobial strategies to reduce early bacterial adhesion and therefore the occurrence of biofilm-associated infections.

Fabric‐hydrogel composite membranes for culturing microalgae in semipermeable membrane‐based photobioreactors

ABSTRACTIn this article, we demonstrate that hydrogel‐based composite membranes are used as semipermeable materials for the construction of photobioreactors (PBRs). PBRs are developed to culture microalgae using nutrients dissolved in seawater, and thus they need to be fabricated with membranes possessing sufficient material‐transport properties. While hydrogels are characterized by their highly swelling nature in water and therefore have desirable transport of dissolved matter, they lack the mechanical strength to be cast into thin structures of large surface area. This issue motivated us to design a new concept, i.e., fabric‐hydrogel composite membranes (FHCMs). A cotton fabric inside the hydrogel matrix endows the composite with tensile strength, which enables casting of FHCMs into thin membranes. Several FHCMs were prepared with 2‐hydroxyethyl methacrylate (HEMA), cross‐linking poly(ethylene glycol) dimethacrylate (PEGDMA) and a sheet of gauze by controlling the composition of the monomers and water. In the permeability measurement of nitrate ions, a key ingredient for the growth of microalgae, the permeability coefficient reached as high as 1.2 x 10−8 m2 min−1, which is roughly three times higher than that of a commercially available semipermeable membrane (3.3 x 10−9 m2 min−1). In the following evaluation of microalgal culture, a PBR constructed with a FHCM was able to maintain sufficient ion concentration and pH of the culture broth, supporting microalgal growth. These results suggest that the composite membranes with hydrogel and fabric have potential in the application of microalgal culture for bio‐diesel production in a marine environment. © 2015 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. Fabrication of a Large‐Area Hierarchical Structure Array by Combining Replica Molding and Atmospheric Pressure Plasma Etching

A novel approach to produce a large‐area hierarchical structure array is presented. The method combines replica molding and atmospheric pressure plasma (APP) etching processes. Liquid blends consisting of siliconized silsesquioxane acrylate (Si‐SSQA), polyethylene glycol dimethacrylate (PEGDMA), and photoinitiator are used as roughness formable materials during APP etching. Microstructures composed of the Si‐SSQA/PEGDMA mixtures are fabricated by replica molding. Nanoroughness is realized on the microstructures by argon/oxygen (Ar/O2) APP etching in air. The nano­roughness on molded microstructures is efficiently controlled by varying the weight ratio of Si‐SSQA to PEGDMA and the etching time. The hierarchical structures fabricated by combining replica molding and Ar/O2 APP etching show superhydrophilicity with a long‐term stability, resulting in the formation of hydroxyl‐terminated silicon oxide layer with the reorientation limit. On the other hand, the hierarchical structures treated with a perfluorinated self‐assembled monolayer (SAM) show increased the water contact angles of up to 161° depending on the morphology of the hierarchical structures. The increment of water contact angles is consistent with increment of the nano‐/microroughness of hierarchical structures.

Desorption of 3,3'-diindolylmethane from imprinted particles: An impact of cross-linker structure on binding capacity and selectivity.

Here, seven cross-linkers (six polar diacrylates or dimethacrylates of different lengths between double bonds, and one aromatic-divinylbenzene) were used to examine the impact of the cross-linker on binding capacity and selectivity of 3,3'-diindolylmethane (DIM) imprinted material. DIM participates in the suppression of viability of human ovarian and human breast cancer cell lines, but has low bioavailability. The investigations of novel imprinted polymer matrices for improvement of DIM release could allow to utilize not only a potency of DIM but also similar alkaloids, which are the important compounds with pharmacological activity. The bulk, thermal radical copolymerization of the cross-linkers in the presence of 3,3'-diindolylmethane (the template) and allylamine (the functional monomer) in dimethyl sulfoxide or in carbon tetrachloride (porogens) was carried out. The binding capacities of imprinted and non-imprinted polymers were compared, and two polymers (these were prepared using ethylene glycol dimethacrylate and polyethylene glycol dimethacrylate as the cross-linkers) with the highest selectivity and binding capacity were selected to desorption test. The desorption profile of polymer prepared using polyethylene glycol dimethacrylate as the cross-linker revealed sustained release of 3,3'-diindolylmethane, and this system was selected for further optimization of the cross-linker amounts. The morphology and structure of the selected particles were analyzed using SEM micrographs, (13)C CP/MAS NMR spectroscopy, and BET measurements. The desorption of 3,3'-diindolylmethane from poly(allylamine-co-polyethylene glycol dimethacrylate) particles was in accordance with pseudo-second-order kinetics and the simplified Higuchi model indicated the diffusion controlled release of 3,3'-diindolylmethane.

Transdermal delivery of cosmetic ingredients using dissolving polymer microneedle arrays

The efficiency of transdermal delivery of cosmetic ingredients is often limited by the outer layer of the skin, known as the stratum corneum, which can prevent diffusion of the cosmetic ingredients through the skin. A polymer microneedle array that dissolves in the skin can enhance the permeability of the skin to cosmetics. In this study, we prepared a polydimethylsiloxane (PDMS) mold to fabricate a microneedle array using laser-writing process which is a very simple and efficient method compared to conventional methods for preparing molds. Polyvinylpyrrolidone (PVP) and adenosine were used as a base material for the dissolving microneedles and a model cosmetic compound, respectively. Poly(ethylene glycol) dimethacrylate (PEGDMA) was copolymerized with PVP to control the properties of microneedles such as mechanical strength and solubility. PVP microneedle array was sufficiently sharp and with enough mechanical strength to create a transdermal pathway through the skin. The dissolution rate of the needle decreased with increasing PEGDMA content in the microneedle of PVP-PEGDMA copolymer. When adenosine was applied to the skin with the microneedle array, skin permeability to adenosine was improved by 150% compared to the control (without a microneedle array). These results indicate that the PVP microneedle array developed in this study has a potential to be used in cosmetics by combining with conventional cosmetic patches.

Temozolomide-loaded photopolymerizable PEG-DMA-based hydrogel for the treatment of glioblastoma

Glioblastoma is the most frequent primary malignant brain tumor in adults. Despite treatments including surgery, radiotherapy and chemotherapy by oral Temozolomide (TMZ), the prognosis of patients with glioblastoma remains very poor. We hypothesized that a polyethylene glycol dimethacrylate (PEG-DMA) injectable hydrogel would provide a sustained and local delivery of TMZ. The hydrogel photopolymerized rapidly (<2min) and presented a viscous modulus (≈10kPa). TMZ release kinetic presented two phases: a linear burst release of 45% of TMZ during the first 24h, followed by a logarithmic release of 20% over the first week. The in vivo tolerability study showed that the unloaded hydrogel did not induce apoptosis in mice brains nor increased microglial activation. In vivo, the anti-tumor efficacy of TMZ-hydrogel was evaluated on xenograft U87MG tumor-bearing nude mice. The tumor weight of mice treated with the photopolymerized TMZ hydrogel drastically decreased compared with all other groups. Higher apoptosis (located at the center of the tumor) was also observed. The present study demonstrates the potential of a photopolymerizable TMZ-loaded hydrogel to treat glioblastoma.

Effect of an additive on the permanent memory effect of polymer dispersed liquid crystal films

BACKGROUND Polymer dispersed liquid crystal (PDLC) films have a range of applications varying from switchable windows to new optical memory devices. They switch from an opaque state, when liquid crystal molecules are randomly dispersed, to a transparent state, when liquid crystal molecules are aligned, simply by applying a small voltage. On some PDLC films, the transparent state is retained even when the voltage is switched off; this is called permanent memory effect (PME). This process is totally reversible, returning to the initial opaque state either through heating or applying a higher frequency electric field when using a two frequency liquid crystal. RESULTS In this work, the impact on the electro-optical response of PDLC films as a result of adding an additive was studied. This performance is affected by several factors, the most important being the anchorage force. This anchorage force is modified with the addition of an additive such as TX-100. As a result, it was verified that the addition of TX-100, increased the PME up to 98.7% and decreased the voltage required to achieve 90% of maximum transmittance to 2 V µm−1. CONCLUSIONS The addition of a surfactant, as TX-100 in this case, was shown to be a valuable method to control the PME in PDLC systems in particular those prepared by PIPS from the oligomer polyethylene glycol dimethacrylate and the monomer triethylene glycol dimethacrylate in mixture with the nematic LC E7. This new advance on liquid crystal field also allows development of a new memory device based on a write–read–erase cycle. © 2015 Society of Chemical Industry

Enhancement of endothelial differentiation of adipose derived mesenchymal stem cells by a three-dimensional culture system of microwell

Adipose derived mesenchymal stem cells (AdMSCs) have been demonstrated to have ability to differentiate into several cell lineages, including endothelial cells. The low endothelial differentiation efficiency, however, limits further clinical application of AdMSCs for therapeutic angiogenesis. This study was designed to investigate the feasibility to promote endothelial differentiation efficacy of AdMSCs using microwell array as a 3-D culture system. AdMSCs aggregates were prepared using photocrosslinkable polyethylene glycol dimethacrylate (PEGDM) derived microwell. AdMSCs aggregated and formed well defined 3-D aggregates following seeding. The microwell was effective in regulating the size of AdMSCs aggregates with low variation. AdMSCs within the 3-D aggregates maintained the cell surface epitopes of AdMSCs with high viability. Endothelial growth medium was used to induce the in vitro endothelial differentiation of AdMSCs. Both gene expression results from real time PCR and protein expression data from immunofluorescent staining revealed that 3-D cultured aggregates significantly promote the endothelial differentiation efficacy of AdMSCs. AdMSCs or AdMSCs aggregates were injected into the subcutaneous space of nu/nu mice to investigate the endothelial differentiation in vivo. The immunofluorescent staining data indicated promoted endothelial differentiation of 3-D aggregates compared with 2-D AdMSCs. Aggregates dissociated cells were obtained by transferring 3-D aggregates onto the adherent surfaces. Cells dissociated from induced aggregates were still positive for endothelial specific markers and were able to form endothelial-like tube structures on matrigel, indicating the endothelial properties. We conclude that microwell is an ideal 3-D culture system for promoting endothelial differentiation efficacy of AdMSCs.

Gelation and crosslinking characteristics of photopolymerized poly(ethylene glycol) hydrogels

ABSTRACTThe gelation and crosslinking features of poly(ethylene glycol) (PEG) hydrogels were scrutinized through the UV polymerization processes of poly(ethylene glycol) methacrylate (PEGMA) and poly(ethylene glycol) dimethacrylate (PEGDMA) mixtures. The real‐time evolutions of the elastic moduli of the prepolymerized mixtures with different crosslinking ratios of PEGMA and PEGDMA and the photoinitiator concentrations were measured during photopolymerization. The rheological properties were compared with other properties of the PEG hydrogels, including the relative changes in the CC amounts in the mixtures before and after UV irradiation, water swelling ratio, gel fraction, mesh size, and mechanical hardness. As the portion of PEGDMA as a crosslinker increased, the final elastic modulus and gel fraction increased, whereas the swelling ratio and scratch penetration depth at the hydrogel film surface decreased because of the formation of compact networks inside the hydrogels. These results indicate that there was a good correlation between the rheological analysis for predicting the crosslinking transition during photopolymerization and the macroscopic properties of the crosslinked hydrogels. © 2015 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. The effect of organoclay addition on the properties of an acrylate based, thermally activated shape memory polymer

Shape Memory Polymers (SMPs) exhibit the intriguing ability to change back from an intermediate, deformed shape back to their original, permanent shape. In this contribution a systematic series of t-butylacrylate-co-poly(ethyleneglycol) dimethacrylate (tBA-co-PEGDMA) polymers have been synthesised and characterised prior to incorporation of organoclay. Increasing the poly(ethyleneglycol) dimethacrylate (PEGDMA) content in increments of 10% increased the storage modulus from 2005 to 2250MPa, reduced the glass transition temperature from +41 to −26°C and reduced the intensity of the associated tan δ peak. The tBA-co-PEGDMA crosslinked networks displayed useful shape memory properties up to PEGDMA contents of 40%. Above this PEGDMA percentage the materials were prone to fracture and too brittle for a realistic assessment of their shape memory capability. The system containing 90% t-butylacrylate (tBA) and 10% PEGDMA was selected as the host matrix to investigate how the incorporation of 1 to 5mass% of a benzyl tallow dimethylammonium-exchanged bentonite (BTDB) influenced the shape memory properties. X-ray diffraction data confirmed that BTDB formed a microcomposite in the selected matrix and exerted no influence on the storage modulus, rubbery modulus, glass transition temperature, Tg, or the shape or intensity of the tan δ peak of the host matrix. Therefore, it was anticipated that the presence of BTDB would have no effect, positive or negative, nor on the shape memory properties of the host matrix. However, it was found that the incorporation of clay, especially at the 1mass% level, significantly accelerated the speed, compared with the clay-free SMP, at which the microcomposite returned to the original, permanent shape. This accelerated return to the permanent shape was also observed when the microcomposite was coated onto a 100μm PET film.

New application of scanning electrochemical microscopy incharac-terization of hydrogel microwell arrays

Hydrogel microwell arrays are new soft substrates for cell cultivation. The microwell morphology has direct influence on the behavior of cells cultured within microwells. But the conventional morphology characterization techniques of hydrogel microwell arrays can not in situ characterize hydrogel microwell arrays in aqueous solution and also not in a reversible way. Using the oxygen dissolved in water as the redox mediator, scanning electrochemical microscopy (SECM) was applied to in situ characterize the morphology of microwell array made of polyethylene glycol dimethacrylate (PEGDMA) hydrogel in aqueous solution. Both the two-dimensional and three-dimensional surface morphology images of PEGDMA microwell arrays were obtained. This work demonstrates that SECM is a new method of in situ characterization of hydrogel microwell arrays in a non-destructive and reversible way with providing three-dimensional surface morphology information.

Polymer length scale on modification of a reverse microemulsion

We study water-in-oil microemulsions, in certain the diffusion of water droplets covered with a monolayer of the anionic surfactant docusate sodium in a phase of n-decane mixed with the polyethylene glycol dimethacrylate (PEGD). At constant droplet size we vary the polymer concentration and from structural investigations with small-angle X-ray scattering there was clear evidence for penetration in the droplets. We apply this technique to monitor the size and morphology of the mixture system (docusate sodium microemulsion/PEGD). The structural study of our samples shows spherical-to-cylindrical change in nanodroplets with increase in polymer concentration. The dynamics of system consists of the translation diffusion of the nanodroplets was studied with dynamic light scattering.

Injectable and photocross-linkable gels based on gellan gum methacrylate: A new tool for biomedical application

In this work, a natural polysaccharide gellan gum (GG) has been modified with methacrylic groups (GG-MA) and combined with polyethylene glycol dimethacrylate (PEG-DMA) in order to create novel injectable hydrogels that can be easily delivered through a needle and photocross-linked in the injection site. A novel synthetic procedure for methacrylation of GG has been proposed to better control its derivatization. Different degrees of functionalization have been achieved and their effects on the solubility and mechanical properties of GG-MA were investigated. A good balance in terms of hydrophilicity and elasticity of the corresponding hydrogels was identified, although not suitable enough as injectable material for the treatment of damaged soft tissues. For this reason, several concentrations and different molecular weights of PEG-DMA were investigated to modulate the composition of GG-MA hydrogels and overcome their extreme fragility. Swelling abilities of the hydrogels in different media were studied as a key parameter able to affect the release profile of loaded therapeutic agents. Model molecules having different spherical hindrance (sulindac and vitamin B12) were then chosen to study how the hydrogels were able to modulate their diffusion profiles over time. Finally, the hydrogel's safety was evaluated trough an MTT cytotoxicity test on human fibroblasts.

Novel bio‐based IPNs obtained by simultaneous thermal polymerization of flexible methacrylate network based on a vegetable oil and a rigid epoxy

A series of novel vegetable oil‐based interpenetrating polymer networks (IPNs) have been successfully prepared: on one hand, methacrylated camelina oil (MCO) and a polyethyleneglycol dimethacrylate (PEG, MW 750 g/mol) and on the other hand, diglycidylether of bisphenol A (DER), in various blend ratios (75/25, 50/50, and 25/75 wt). Hence the appealing innovative direction of the current work was to build oil‐based poly(methacrylate) network using PEG macromonomer which is able to modulate adequately the crosslinking degree of the oil‐based network.These innovative combinations of cross‐linkable resins in terms of flexible methacrylate network based on camelina oil (CO) and PEG and a rigid epoxy (DER) were simultaneously polymerized using two independent non‐interfering curing reactions: free‐radical process for MCO and anionic polymerization of epoxy resin in the presence of a tertiary amine. The effect of the IPNs composition compositional characteristics on the reactivity of methacrylate or epoxy groups was studied using differential scanning calorimetry. The influence of the MCO‐PEG bio‐based polymer on the system properties was evaluated after curing by dynamic mechanical and thermogravimetric analyses. In addition mechanical and morphological studies were also carried out. The results suggested that blending of MCO and DER gave synergistic effects on the overall properties of the developed oil‐based IPNs and a dependence on the methacrylate/epoxy ratio was clearly noticed. Polyelectrolytes exceeding ITO flexibility in electrochromic devices

Utilizing the in situ method, we report the fabrication of flexible electrochromic (EC) devices in a one-step lamination procedure. In this study, electrochromic device performance was enhanced via the use of new gel polymer electrolyte (GPE) materials based on poly(ethylene glycol) (PEG) derivatives. PEG serves as the polymer matrix in electrochromic devices (ECDs) that provides not only mechanical stability, but also a wide potential window and compatibility with a variety of salts. Poly(ethylene glycol) dimethacrylate (PEGDMA) in conjunction with poly(ethylene glycol) methyl ether acrylate (PEGMA), containing lithium trifluoromethanesulfonate (LiTRIF) as the salt and propylene carbonate (PC) as a plasticizer; we investigated various electrolyte parameters, including salt loading, the mono/di-functional PEG ratio, and the plasticizer to PEG ratio. Optimized gel systems exceed the mechanical flexibility of indium tin oxide (ITO) coated polyethylene terephthalate (PET) substrates in their sustainable minimum bending radius of curvature, exhibit an ionic conductivity up to 1.36 × 10−3 S cm−1, and yield electrochromic devices (ECDs) with photopic contrasts as high as 53% (without background correction) using poly(2,2-dimethyl-3,4-propylenedioxythiophene) (PProDOT-Me2) as the standard electrochromic material. In addition to ionic conductivity, the crosslink density of the GPEs was found to have an important effect on the photopic contrast of the resultant ECDs. Using these results, 110 cm2 flexible patterned EC displays were assembled as a demonstration of their potential in real world applications.

Poly(ethylene glycol) dicarboxylate/poly(ethylene oxide) hydrogel film co-crosslinked by electron beam irradiation as an anti-adhesion barrier.

The cross-linked poly(ethylene glycol) dicarboxylate (PEGDC)/poly(ethylene oxide) (PEO) and poly(ethylene glycol) dimethacrylate (PEGDMA)/(PEO) hydrogels were developed for possible biomedical applications such as an anti-adhesion barrier. Various contents of PEGDC/PEO film were irradiated using an electron beam with various beam intensities in order to obtain various degrees of crosslinked hydrogels. The optimum dose (300 kGy) and total crosslinker content of 10% were used to prepare crosslinked hydrogel films with three different compositions (10% PEGDC, 10% PEGDMA, 5% PEGDC-5% PEGDMA). Among them, 10% PEGDC hydrogel film exhibited the highest elongation at break (69.33±6.87%) with high mechanical strength. 10% PEGDC hydrogel film showed the lowest hemolysis activity (6.03±0.01%) and the highest tissue adherence (75.67±1.15 cN). The result also indicated that the carboxyl groups in PEGDC affect the tissue adherence of hydrogel films via H-bonding interactions. In animal studies, 10% PEGDC anti-adhesion hydrogel film degraded within 3 weeks and demonstrated better anti-adhesive effect compared to Guardix-SG®.
