Our vast teaching and research career in the field of higher education, especially about Argentine universities, mobilized us to deepen our reflection on the processes of government and management in universities, focused specifically on those of strategic planning, since the state The global crisis caused by the pandemic placed us at a turning point, which implied repositioning ourselves and therefore carrying out a contextual review and normative inquiry to be able to question ourselves about the importance of planning and especially its place in universities to face uncertainty, change and this global crisis. Taking into account some of the characteristics that our university system acquired during the ASPO[1] and DISPO[2] with the contribution of prominent scholars, we also present a systematization of regulations and documents issued by the CIN[3] and by the SPU[4] And finally, in this contextual framework We take UNICEN[5] as a case to specify the documents it prepared, whether it did so based on its institutional planning and to what extent it responded to the emergency. Internationalization of Education: the Place and Role of Russian Universities

Today, in the global educational space, higher edu-cation institutions are undergoing fundamental re-forms. The main reasons for the renewal of voca-tional training are the needs for the development of the economic and social sectors, science, technolo-gy, the labor market and their potential development should be adjusted to create a favorable vocational training system. The Bologna Declaration, signed by many countries supporting the idea of international-ization, calls for concrete measures in this regard. But what has internationalization really changed and given to universities? And what should be changed? The author of the paper tried to answer these and other questions. The information used in this study was obtained on the basis of the results of research by domestic and foreign scientists in the field of internationalization of higher education, as well as analysis of documents, statistics and the global Internet.

Evaluation of Self-Assessed State of Health and Vitamin D Knowledge in Emirati and International Female Students in United Arab Emirates (UAE).

IntroductionGlobally, vitamin D deficiency is one of the most common deficiencies, affecting nearly half the world’s population. The objective of this survey was to assess and compare the knowledge about vitamin D and the perceived state of health in Emirati and international tourist female students in Dubai, United Arab Emirates (UAE).MethodsThis is a cross-sectional study that took place in universities in Dubai, United Arab Emirates. This survey consisted of 17 multiple choice questions and was adapted from a study recently conducted in Poland. The first part of the survey assessed levels of supplementation, diet and UV exposure. Another section evaluated the participants’ self-assessed state of health in terms of vitamin D testing, symptoms related to vitamin D deficiency and general welbeing. The collected data were statistically analyzed using SPSS statistics for windows version 26.0 (SPSS Inc., Chicago, IL, United States). Statistical significance was set at P < 0.05.Results105 respondents were Emiratis and 65 were international students. The average age was 21, with an average BMI 23.3 kg/m2. Almost one-third of each group reported using Vitamin D supplements once weekly. The vast majority of both groups reported rarely getting tanned. Almost all participants in both groups reported regular consumption of Vitamin D rich foods. In both groups, more than half reported consuming milk and cheese regularly and up to one-third reported consuming fish in a regular manner. Although more than half of the students rated their health as good; more than two-thirds reported experiencing muscle pain; only half reported having their blood Vitamin D levels measured once; half reported experiencing problems with concentration and more than three-quarters reported experiencing bad mood in the past month. The prevalence of these symptoms was almost similar across different categories of vitamin D supplementation, tanning habits, dietary intake, or nationality. No statistically significant differences were noted between the Emirati and International tourist students regarding any of the studied variables.ConclusionNotably, more Emirati students were aware of the association between vitamin D and osteoporosis than International tourist students (40% vs. 21.9%, respectively; p < 0.05). On the other hand, both groups had lower knowledge about the relationship between vitamin D deficiency and depression, Rheumatoid Arthritis and Hypertension, and the optimal vitamin D level; however, no statistically significant differences were noted regarding this knowledge of Emiratis and international students.

English Medium Instruction in the Russian University

The 21 century is the time of globalization, which is manifested in the extensive use of the English language as the language of science and education. In the time of the high level of academic mobility and the great number of the English-language programs, the course “English Medium Instruction” has acquired its international reputation. According to the research conducted by the British Council, 55 countries worldwide became EMI countries. Russia was not a member. However, Russia also experiences the world trend of internationalization of education, thus the linguoprofes-sional competence plays a significant role in the learning process. Realization of the interdisciplinary approach to education has been the Russian case study of the course “English Medium Instruction” in the leading research university MIPT. The article considers the case of cooperation of the teacher with the course participants - MIPT faculty - in the process of the writing up of the syllabus. In the course of study, participants got interested in the issues of academic writing - English for research publication purposes (Research Writing) and Student Writing as the constituent and mandatory part of academic courses. Course participants considered the macrostructure of the professionally-oriented genres of writing - a research article and its types - and the most frequent difficulties and errors that occur in writing. Course participants got the answers how to integrate the writing tasks in their own course in the workshop called “Student Writing” addressing the typical student genres of data report, summary, annotated bibliography, thesis project. Course participants discussed how to create a writing task assignment in an interesting and professional way, what research skills are required for students, what are the evaluation criteria, and if it is necessary to assess the language errors and how. One more way of addressing the academic discourse was the genre of presentations. Being a hybrid genre that includes an oral part and a written part, presentations have a great learning potential, which makes it possible to compare and contrast special features of an informal and formal style. By the end of the course several participants could make some changes and even rewrite their syllabus. The author hopes that such a course with CLIL component will find its place in the Russian universities.

Estrategias socioculturales para el funcionamiento de una universidad moderna.

Como resultado del estudio del papel y el lugar de las universidades en la sociedad moderna, podemos decir que hoy existe una tendencia a expandir las funciones de la universidad como institución social, la manifestación de su multifuncionalidad. Con la expansión de las funciones de la universidad, su "enfoque" cambia de los problemas del desarrollo de un individuo a los problemas más amplios del desarrollo social. Una característica de una universidad moderna es su enfoque en los cambios sociales en curso a través de una integración profunda en la vida de las comunidades sociales y la sociedad en general.

DIRECTIONS OF SOLVING PROBLEM ISSUES OF IMPROVING PERSONALITY DEVELOPMENT IN THE CONDITIONS OF THE NEW PSYCHO-COMPUTER REALITY

The relevance of the study is that in the new psycho-computer reality, humanity faces a number of dangers associated with the improper or uncontrolled use of information and communication technologies (ICT). This is especially true for young people, and first of all for those who are preparing to become the nation's elite by studying at universities. Under such conditions, knowledge about the functioning of the human brain and the impact of ICT on this process becomes extremely important, as they contribute to success in activities, while maintaining the mental and physical health of participants in the learning process. Therefore the proper use of ICT to prevent their negative effects on the mental and physical health of young people is becoming an extremely important issue in the organization of educational processes that take place in universities. The purpose of the article is to identify areas for solving problems of improving personal development in the new psycho-computer reality and to find ways to prevent and overcome the negative consequences of the use of ICT. Methodology - the use of methods of analysis and synthesis, abstraction, historical and logical, systemic and structural, which helped to synthesize the material and implement a holistic concept. Objectives of the study: 1) to identify the features of the impact of ICT on humans in the new computer information and communication reality; 2) to show the importance of the role of knowledge of the humanities in the process of teaching and educating young people in the use of ICT in order to expand their worldview and prevention; 3) to analyze the problems of distortion of worldview under the influence of manipulative suggestion of the superpowers of digital technologies; 4) to reveal the essence of clip thinking as a factor of alternative culture of information perception; 5) to find out the development of the brain as a factor in the formation of distal vision of information perception; 6) to analyze cyberpsychology as a science of synergetic combination at the intersection of human and computer activity; 7) to substantiate the directions of digital hygiene as a factor of mental and physical health of the individual. The result of the study. problematic issues of improving the development of personality in the new psycho-computer reality are identified, distortion of worldview under the influence of manipulative suggestion of the potential of digital technologies, clip thinking as a factor of alternative culture of information perception; the analysis of cyberpsychology as a science of synergetic combination at the intersection of human and computer activity and directions of observance of digital hygiene as a factor of mental and physical health of the person is presented. The correct use of ICT with the prevention of its negative effects on the mental and physical health of young people is an important problem in the organization of educational processes, the solution of which will contribute to the formation of the integrity of the individual

International mobility of students in modern conditions of transformation in the global market of services (regional aspect)

Modern global processes are stated to have significantly influenced transformations in the higher education system. On the other hand, internationalisation of higher education has become a key factor in the development of global processes. Accor-dingly, it becomes necessary to determine the specific nature of the internationalisation processes of higher education in different countries, as well as the involvement thereof in the processes of academic mobility at establishing the educational space transformation under the conditions of globalization, at grounding the changing place and role of universities as higher education internationalisation contribute to enhancing the convergence of national educational systems, providing a significant influence on the level of competitiveness of national economies. The authors define the peculiarities of attrac-ting countries to mobility processes and systematise the waves of international student mobility, taking into account the geopolitical and geo-economic factors of positive and negative influence of institutional drivers. Furthermore, dynamic shifts in international student mobility are calculated and the regional distribution of foreign students by educational level is determined. The purpose of the article is to identify the waves and substantiate the factors of international student mo-bility in the context of the transformation of the global market of educational services.

Сталий університет: модель системної інтеграції принципів сталого розвитку в усі сфери діяльності

Проаналізовано світоглядні та загальнометодологічні передумови екологізації освітньої діяльності університетів на основі концепції людського капіталу сталого розвитку. Обґрунтовано економічний дискурс освіти для сталого розвитку, який базується на системно-синергетичній парадигмі, а також окреслено сучасні тенденції розвитку систем освіти. Досліджено методологічні та дидактичні аспекти екологізації освітньої діяльності університетів на засадах компетентнісного підходу. Розкрито теоретичні та методичні особливості екологізації різних напрямів підготовки фахівців на основі концепції людського капіталу сталого розвитку. Розглянуто роль університетів у реалізації Стратегії ЄЕК ООН. Вивчено світовий досвід переходу університетів до сталості. На засадах підходу "всієї школи" проаналізовано ключові аспекти імплементації соціальної відповідальності університету. Обґрунтовано роль цього підходу у формуванні сучасного дискурсу освіти для сталого розвитку, який сприяє підвищенню її дієвості, викликає зміни у професійній і побутовій поведінці. З'ясовано передумови системної та цілісної інтеграції принципів сталості в усі сфери діяльності університетів. Особливу увагу звернено на досвід Національного лісотехнічного університету України як репрезентанта формування і втілення в життя моделі цілісної концепції екологізації вищої професійної освіти.

Organising RDM and Open Science Services

This paper describes how the Finnish Ministry of Education and Culture launched an initiative on research data management and open data, open access publishing, and open and collaborative ways of working in 2014. Most of the universities and research institutions took part in the collaborative initiative building new tools and training material for the Finnish research needs. Measures taken by one university, Aalto University, are described in detail and analysed, and compared with the activities taking place in other universities.&#x0D; The focus of this paper is in the changing roles of experts at Aalto University, and organisational transformation that offers possibilities to serve academic personnel better. Various ways of building collaboration and arranging services are described, and their benefits and drawbacks are discussed.

Analysis of laboratory incident database

With the growth of academic institutions, the number of labs handling hazardous chemicals has increased. Although the chemicals used in academic institutions are well-known, the dosage, usage, and management of these chemicals pose significant threat to researchers at all levels. As a step towards incident prevention, a laboratory incident database was developed to record incidents at universities and secondary schools. The data consisted of 128 entries occurring during the years 2012–2015. Incidents were classified by institution type, hazard type, consequences, substance type, body parts injured and direct causes. Of 128 incidents, 65% of the incidents were taking place in universities. Chemical spills were observed to be the most recurrent hazard type contributing to 45% of the incidents following by explosions (23%) and fires (21%). The consequence which most frequently occurred in incidents was personal injury and hazmat response contributing to 22% each. It was observed that in 41% of the incidents, the body parts injured in the incident was not known or reported. Of the total 128 incidents, about 50 incidents occurred due to improper storage and handling.

Academic Excellence, Website Quality, SEO Performance: Is there a Correlation?

The academic excellence of universities around the globe has always been a matter of extended study and so has the quality of an institution’s presence in the World Wide Web. The purpose of this research is to study the extent to which a university’s academic excellence is related to the quality of its web presence. In order to achieve this, a method was devised that quantified the website quality and search engine optimization (SEO) performance of the university websites of the top 100 universities in the Academic Ranking of World Universities (ARWU) Shanghai list. A variety of tools was employed to measure and test each website and produced a Web quality ranking, an SEO performance ranking, as well as a combined overall web ranking for each one. Comparing these rankings with the ARWU shows that academic excellence is moderately correlated with website quality, but SEO performance is not. Moreover, the overall web ranking also shows a moderate correlation with ARWU which seems to be positively influenced by website quality and negatively by SEO performance. Conclusively, the results of the research indicate that universities place particular emphasis on issues concerning website quality, while the utilization of SEO does not appear to be of equal importance, indicating possible room for improvement in this area.

From School to University: An Overview on STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics) Gender in Brazil

Since centuries ago, women have been seeking gender equity’s guarantee and even with the right to poll, divorce, work and education, it didn’t mean an equality of place in universities. Even though they are majority in Brazilian universities, this doesn't reflect itself in what relates to the permanence and career’s ascension in Exact Sciences field. A minimum number of women graduating in licentiate and bachelor degrees, though when they become researchers few ones achieve a productivity fellowship. Moreover black women’s situation is even more vulnerable. In basics education, a little number of women teaches disciplines related to Physics or Mathematics, making that students don’t fell represented. In this work is brought about a survey on ethnic/gender representativeness in database and together with students from middle/high school. The results of our study demonstrate that affirmative policies are needed to gender and ethnic equity in exact sciences yet. Not only in what refers to representativeness in researches and universities, but also aiming basics education’s schools. Encouraging the deconstruction of stereotypes and that more women, especially the black ones, can ingress on those graduation courses related to this scientific knowledge’s field.

Integrating community service learning into a master’s program

Purpose In order to address the complex problems of society, the innovation research process should incorporate technical, social, economic and ethical factors, but also actively involve a diverse group of non-scientific actors. One way to prepare students for this type of research is to create “Citizen Scholars,” students who want to work for the betterment of society. Arvanitakis and Hornsby (2016) argue that we need to change how we teach and train students in specific proficiencies. The purpose of this paper is to assess how the pedagogical approach applied within the program contributes to building the proficiencies and attributes as described by Arvanitakis and Hornsby (2016). Design/methodology/approach The authors conducted a total of 12 interviews with alumni who started their program in 2014, one focus group discussion with lecturers and 132 questionnaires with alumni to discuss to what extend the proficiencies are trained in the program and whether these are used in their current jobs. The authors also included data of an earlier study conducted in 2014. These data contain 26 interviews with students during the first year of the program. These students graduated in 2017 and are thus from the same cohort as the alumni. Findings The results show that the pedagogical approach in the management policy analysis program trains all the attributes. Important elements in the program are: the inquiry-based approach intertwined with community service learning (CSL) throughout the program; gradually increased complexity of the real-world problems addressed; students working in teams; and gradually reducing support of the lecturer. Research limitations/implications The authors conclude that our pedagogical approach applied in the program contributes to learning the proficiencies. The authors argue that for the training of inter- and transdisciplinary, the proficiency knowledge integration should be added. Practical implications The result show that more inquiry-based approaches and CSL programs can stimulate the four clusters of proficiencies, which should hold a central place in universities if we want to create citizen scholars. Social implications With the approach, students contribute to research issues of local communities. Originality/value Despite the increasing interest of higher education to involve civic activities in the curricula, few pedagogical approaches are described. The research shows that theoretical insights in the adaption of a model to realize a citizen scholar.

Transdisciplinary institutionalization in higher education: a two-level analysis

ABSTRACTIn this paper, we focus on the institutionalization of transdisciplinarity (TD) in higher education institutions and how they institutionalize Transdisciplinarity (TD). As such, universities have engaged in different activities to enact TD policies that aim at incorporating TD in their research and teaching. We take the Methodology Center at the Leuphana University of Lüneburg as a case study. We analyze the institutionalization process of TD to shed light on the obstacles that TD faces to become a widespread policy and practice at universities. In adopting a neo-institutionalist approach in our research, we develop a two-level analysis that allow us to compare the formal characteristics given to TD policies with the actual TD practices taking place in universities. Our findings reveal that TD institutionalization at the Methodology Center is at a mid-level and that overall TD institutionalization is an iterative process, in which the two levels mutually can reinforce or hinder each other.

Introduction. Corporate University is an educational entity which helps to advance organizational and individual knowledge. It has been widely discussed and adopted by many organizations. We investigate the development of corporate learning within the context of corporate universities. We determine that the corporate university meets business needs in training and manager performance. A corporate university can help regulate behaviours with strategic company goals and result in employee responsibility, promote corporate values and organizational culture. Purpose. The article aims to analyse the development of corporate universities. Method (methodology). The article is based on methods such as method of synthesis (to define the essential characteristics of corporate universities), method of structural and comparative analysis (to determine the place of corporate universities in the system of employees training). Results. The paper explores whether a corporate university is providing actual value to the organization from the perspective of employees training. The article argues that if corporate universities do not use pedagogical preferences aspects into their practice in e-learning, this will devalue the training system. The task of the corporate university is identified as training and development of employees, their knowledge evaluation, the common corporate standards establishment. We investigate how e-learning is received, managed and whether there is an influence on learner performance. The article introduces that corporate university can be a non-profit educational organization that has a more central role in training, retraining, and performance of employees than ever before. It is a company which is controlled by parent company but has a separate legal entity or a corporation department.

Higher education for citizens of caring democracies

Educational development has gained legitimacy as a field of inquiry. Larger structural questions about the place of universities within democracies, however, should be a basic concern of educational developers. This paper poses the question, “which side are you on?” It argues that developers can either acquiesce to the conditions of universities in a neoliberal setting or can resist by thinking about universities as a critical tool in the development of caring democracies.

Developing deep understanding of teacher education practice through accessing and responding to pre-service teacher engagement with their learning

ABSTRACTIn this research we examined the ways we accessed and responded to students’ engagement with a set of pedagogical principles of teacher education focused on meaningful physical education. The research was cross-cultural, taking place in universities in Country 1 and Country 2. Self-study of teacher education practice (S-STEP) methodology guided collection and analysis of the following data over one year: lesson planning and reflection documents, and critical friend and ‘meta-critical friend’ interactions. Findings indicate the value in teacher educators becoming more intentional and systematic in how they access student perspectives related to engagement with learning experiences of pedagogical innovations in pre-service teacher education, while also emphasising the challenges in doing so. The concepts of reflection on- and in-action provided a framework for understanding how being more intentional about accessing student perspectives can be enacted in teacher education practice. Our experiences demonstrate how focusing on student engagement can support the professional learning of teacher educators through enabling a deeper understanding of the challenges faced in being responsive to students’ engagement with their learning.

Signalling the ‘Multi-Local’ University? The Place of the City in the Growth of London-Based Satellite Campuses, and the Implications for Social Stratification

Around 2009 some UK universities (based outside of the capital) began to open ‘satellite campuses’ in London. There are currently 14 such campuses at present, which have been developed primarily with an international student market in mind. Concerns have been raised, however, about the quality of teaching on these campuses and the fact that student attainment is ostensibly falling significantly below that for the ‘home’ campus. This project is the first of its kind to investigate, systematically, the ways in which universities are representing themselves in relation to these campuses (data include an analysis of prospectuses, YouTube content, websites and material garnered at open days). Using these data, we discuss the role that the City of London plays as a pivotal backdrop to these developments: the way it serves to substitute and compensate for lower levels of resources provided directly to the student from the university (here we consider accommodation, the outsourcing of teaching, the absence of a substantive campus environment and a general lack of focus on ‘pedagogical’ matters in almost all marketing materials). Instead, the universities place London at the front and centre of attempts to ‘sell’ the campus to potential students. The paper makes some innovative conceptual links between work in migration studies on the role and function of global cities in attracting workers and the way in which the city operates in this case to attract international students. These campuses feed into debates around the increasing inequalities evidenced as a consequence of the internationalisation of higher education, even when such developments are ostensibly ‘domestic’.
