Three pesticides, viz. Treflan (α-α-α-trifluoro-2,6-dinitro-N,N-dipropyl-p-toluidine), lindane (1,2,3,4,5,6-hexachlorocyclohexane), and ceresan (Phenyl mercury acetate) in concentrations of field dose, 10-fold, and 100-fold rates of the normal field dose, either applied to the soil or mixed with the seed, were tested for their effects on different parameters of symbiotic nitrogen fixation in Cicer arietinum crop under greenhouse conditions. The root nodulation, plant growth, yield, and nitrogenfixing capacity of the crop were severely affected even at the normal concentrations of these pesticides. Ceresan was found to be least toxic and had some beneficial effects. Addition of organic matter in the form of gram straw contributed, to some extent, in reversing the toxicity of ceresan with regard to different parameters of nitrogen fixation, but was of no avail in case of treflan and lindane.
