Single-Shot Intensity- and Phase-Sensitive Compressive Sensing-Based Coherent Modulation Ultrafast Imaging.

Ultrafast imaging can capture the dynamic scenes with a nanosecond and even femtosecond temporal resolution. Complementarily, phase imaging can provide the morphology, refractive index, or thickness information that intensity imaging cannot represent. Therefore, it is important to realize the simultaneous ultrafast intensity and phase imaging for achieving as much information as possible in the detection of ultrafast dynamic scenes. Here, we report a single-shot intensity- and phase-sensitive compressive sensing-based coherent modulation ultrafast imaging technique, shortened as CS-CMUI, which integrates coherent modulation imaging, compressive imaging, and streak imaging. We theoretically demonstrate through numerical simulations that CS-CMUI can obtain both the intensity and phase information of the dynamic scenes with ultrahigh fidelity. Furthermore, we experimentally build a CS-CMUI system and successfully measure the intensity and phase evolution of a multimode Q-switched laser pulse and the dynamical behavior of laser ablation on an indium tin oxide thin film. It is anticipated that CS-CMUI enables a profound comprehension of ultrafast phenomena and promotes the advancement of various practical applications, which will have substantial impact on fundamental and applied sciences.

Monte Carlo simulation of phase-contrast X-ray imaging with a single-grid setup

Phase-contrast X-ray imaging is widely used to visualize the internal structures of samples that cannot be seen with conventional X-ray imaging. Among various phase-sensitive imaging techniques available—propagation-based, grating-interferometry, edge-illumination, and speckle-based—single-grid-based imaging, a variant of the speckle-based technique, provides benefits like single exposure and a simple setup. In this study, we developed a Monte Carlo (MC) simulator based on Geant4 for phase-contrast imaging with a single-grid setup. We then validated the MC simulations of single-grid imaging against theoretical predictions. Our results demonstrate that the phase-contrast images obtained using the simulator align well with the theoretical predictions. Moreover, we quantitatively investigated the effects of imaging parameters, such as X-ray focal spot size and grid period, on image quality using the MC simulator. This confirmed the viability of the simulator. We expect that this simulator will be useful in designing an optimal single-grid-based imaging setup.

High resolution propagation-based lung imaging at clinically relevant X-ray dose levels

Absorption-based clinical computed tomography (CT) is the current imaging method of choice in the diagnosis of lung diseases. Many pulmonary diseases are affecting microscopic structures of the lung, such as terminal bronchi, alveolar spaces, sublobular blood vessels or the pulmonary interstitial tissue. As spatial resolution in CT is limited by the clinically acceptable applied X-ray dose, a comprehensive diagnosis of conditions such as interstitial lung disease, idiopathic pulmonary fibrosis or the characterization of small pulmonary nodules is limited and may require additional validation by invasive lung biopsies. Propagation-based imaging (PBI) is a phase sensitive X-ray imaging technique capable of reaching high spatial resolutions at relatively low applied radiation dose levels. In this publication, we present technical refinements of PBI for the characterization of different artificial lung pathologies, mimicking clinically relevant patterns in ventilated fresh porcine lungs in a human-scale chest phantom. The combination of a very large propagation distance of 10.7 m and a photon counting detector with 100,upmu hbox {m} pixel size enabled high resolution PBI CT with significantly improved dose efficiency, measured by thermoluminescence detectors. Image quality was directly compared with state-of-the-art clinical CT. PBI with increased propagation distance was found to provide improved image quality at the same or even lower X-ray dose levels than clinical CT. By combining PBI with iodine k-edge subtraction imaging we further demonstrate that, the high quality of the calculated iodine concentration maps might be a potential tool for the analysis of lung perfusion in great detail. Our results indicate PBI to be of great value for accurate diagnosis of lung disease in patients as it allows to depict pathological lesions non-invasively at high resolution in 3D. This will especially benefit patients at high risk of complications from invasive lung biopsies such as in the setting of suspected idiopathic pulmonary fibrosis (IPF).

Single-exposure X-ray phase imaging microscopy with a grating interferometer.

The advent of hard X-ray free-electron lasers enables nanoscopic X-ray imaging with sub-picosecond temporal resolution. X-ray grating interferometry offers a phase-sensitive full-field imaging technique where the phase retrieval can be carried out from a single exposure alone. Thus, the method is attractive for imaging applications at X-ray free-electron lasers where intrinsic pulse-to-pulse fluctuations pose a major challenge. In this work, the single-exposure phase imaging capabilities of grating interferometry are characterized by an implementation at the I13-1 beamline of Diamond Light Source (Oxfordshire, UK). For comparison purposes, propagation-based phase contrast imaging was also performed at the same instrument. The characterization is carried out in terms of the quantitativeness and the contrast-to-noise ratio of the phase reconstructions as well as via the achievable spatial resolution. By using a statistical image reconstruction scheme, previous limitations of grating interferometry regarding the spatial resolution can be mitigated as well as the experimental applicability of the technique.

Evaluation and comparison of a CdTe based photon counting detector with an energy integrating detector for X-ray phase sensitive imaging of breast cancer.

To compare imaging performance of a cadmium telluride (CdTe) based photon counting detector (PCD) with a CMOS based energy integrating detector (EID) for potential phase sensitive imaging of breast cancer. A high energy inline phase sensitive imaging prototype consisting of a microfocus X-ray source with geometric magnification of 2 was employed. The pixel pitch of the PCD was 55μm, while 50μm for EID. The spatial resolution was quantitatively and qualitatively assessed through modulation transfer function (MTF) and bar pattern images. The edge enhancement visibility was assessed by measuring edge enhancement index (EEI) using the acrylic edge acquired images. A contrast detail (CD) phantom was utilized to compare detectability of simulated tumors, while an American College of Radiology (ACR) accredited phantom for mammography was used to compare detection of simulated calcification clusters. A custom-built phantom was employed to compare detection of fibrous structures. The PCD images were acquired at equal, and 30% less mean glandular dose (MGD) levels as of EID images. Observer studies along with contrast to noise ratio (CNR) and signal to noise ratio (SNR) analyses were performed for comparison of two detection systems. MTF curves and bar pattern images revealed an improvement of about 40% in the cutoff resolution with the PCD. The excellent spatial resolution offered by PCD system complemented superior detection of the diffraction fringes at boundaries of the acrylic edge and resulted in an EEI value of 3.64 as compared to 1.44 produced with EID image. At equal MGD levels (standard dose), observer studies along with CNR and SNR analyses revealed a substantial improvement of PCD acquired images in detection of simulated tumors, calcification clusters, and fibrous structures. At 30% less MGD, PCD images preserved image quality to yield equivalent (slightly better) detection as compared to the standard dose EID images. CdTe-based PCDs are technically feasible to image breast abnormalities (low/high contrast structures) at low radiation dose levels using the high energy inline phase sensitive imaging technique.

An Alternative Phase-Sensitive THz Imaging Technique for Art Conservation: History and New Developments at the ENEA Center of Frascati

In recent years, THz imaging techniques have been used in several fields of application. At the beginning of the century, the low availability of powerful THz sources was one of the limiting factors to the advancement of THz technology. At the ENEA center in Frascati, two Free Electron Lasers (FELs) operating in the THz spectral region were available at that time, making it possible to exploit all the features of THz imaging. In this paper, we will describe an alternative THz imaging technique, developed over 15 years of studies at the ENEA center of Frascati, and its application in the art conservation field, reporting the latest results of such studies on the optical properties of pigments in the GHz-THz region of the spectrum, on the possibility of detecting biological weeds under mosaic tiles and on the THz analysis of ancient leather wallpapers. This alternative technique was first developed in the framework of a bilateral collaboration between Japan and Italy, the THz-ARTE Project, which involved NICT (Tokyo), NNRICP (Nara), ENEA (Frascati) and IFAC-CNR (Florence). Most of the THz imaging techniques at that time were based on THz-Time Domain (THz-TD) devices. In the paper will be described how this alternative technique is able to measure the phase of the reflected radiation, thus providing information on the optical properties of the materials under study, such as mural paintings and mosaics. This makes it possible to detect the presence of hidden artworks, additional elements under paint layers, and dielectric materials. To describe the potential and the limits of this alternative imaging technique we will start from a description of the first THz imaging setup at the ENEA center of Frascati, based upon a THz Free Electron Laser. A description of the theoretical principle underlying this technique will be given. The first results in the field of art conservation are summarized, while the new results of a systematic study on the optical properties of pigments are reported and the realization of a portable THz imaging device, and its application “on site” for the analysis of frescoes are shown. The success of this prototype lead to the identification of different types of artworks as possible targets to be studied. New results about the ability of detecting water, and possibly the water content of biological weeds, under mosaic tiles are described, while new experimental measurements on Leather Wallpapers, both “in situ” and in a laboratory environment, are discussed later. A final analysis on the pro and the cons of this alternative imaging technique and on its possible utilization with the developed prototype is carried out together with the considerations on possible future developments and its potential use as an extension of other imaging techniques.

X-ray phase-sensitive imaging using a bilens interferometer based on refractive optics.

The phase-sensitive X-ray imaging technique based on the bilens interferometer is developed. The essence of the method consists of scanning a sample, which is set upstream of the bilens across the beam of one lens of the interferometer by recording changes in the interference pattern using a high-resolution image detector. The proposed approach allows acquiring the absolute value of a phase shift profile of the sample with a fairly high phase and spatial resolution. The possibilities of the imaging technique were studied theoretically and experimentally using fibres with different sizes as the test samples at the ESRF ID06 beamline with 12 keV X-rays. The corresponding phase shift profile reconstructions and computer simulations were performed. The experimental results are fully consistent with theoretical concepts and appropriate numerical calculations. Applications of the interferometric imaging technique are discussed, as well as future improvements.

Monochromatic Propagation-Based Phase-Contrast Microscale Computed-Tomography System with a Rotating-Anode Source

Phase-sensitive x-ray imaging techniques offer significant advantages over conventional absorption radiography, especially for low-$Z$ samples (like your body), for which absorption contrast is weak. While standard for dedicated synchrotron beamlines, these techniques remain challenging for compact lab-based systems. The authors present a laboratory setup for x-ray phase-contrast imaging, based on a high-power rotating-anode source and confocal multilayer mirror, which at once attains high flux, spatial and temporal coherence. This detailed description of an innovative system plus examples of biomedical applications is expected to have real impact on the x-ray-imaging community.

Non-identifiability of the Rayleigh damping material model in Magnetic Resonance Elastography

Magnetic Resonance Elastography (MRE) is an emerging imaging modality for quantifying soft tissue elasticity deduced from displacement measurements within the tissue obtained by phase sensitive Magnetic Resonance Imaging (MRI) techniques. MRE has potential to detect a range of pathologies, diseases and cancer formations, especially tumors. The mechanical model commonly used in MRE is linear viscoelasticity (VE). An alternative Rayleigh damping (RD) model for soft tissue attenuation is used with a subspace-based nonlinear inversion (SNLI) algorithm to reconstruct viscoelastic properties, energy attenuation mechanisms and concomitant damping behavior of the tissue-simulating phantoms. This research performs a thorough evaluation of the RD model in MRE focusing on unique identification of RD parameters, μI and ρI.Results show the non-identifiability of the RD model at a single input frequency based on a structural analysis with a series of supporting experimental phantom results. The estimated real shear modulus values (μR) were substantially correct in characterising various material types and correlated well with the expected stiffness contrast of the physical phantoms. However, estimated RD parameters displayed consistent poor reconstruction accuracy leading to unpredictable trends in parameter behaviour. To overcome this issue, two alternative approaches were developed: (1) simultaneous multi-frequency inversion; and (2) parametric-based reconstruction. Overall, the RD model estimates the real shear shear modulus (μR) well, but identifying damping parameters (μI and ρI) is not possible without an alternative approach.

High spatial resolution second-harmonic interferometry

A monolithic compact fully fiber coupled Nd:YAG (yttrium aluminum garnet) continuous wave laser based second-harmonic interferometer with 60 μm spatial resolution is presented. The device is tested by measuring the dispersion of laser etched polymeric films; the result found is a phase shift sensitivity down to 7 × 10−3 rad for an acquisition time as fast as 300 μs. These results demonstrate the feasibility of high spatial resolution second-harmonic interferometry, and an outlook is given for its use as a novel quantitative phase sensitive imaging technique.

Post-detection analysis for grating-based ultra-small angle X-ray scattering

Until recently, the hard X-ray, phase-sensitive imaging technique called grating interferometry was thought to provide information only in real space. However, by utilizing an alternative approach to data analysis we demonstrated that the angular resolved ultra-small angle X-ray scattering distribution can be retrieved from experimental data. Thus, reciprocal space information is accessible by grating interferometry in addition to real space. Naturally, the quality of the retrieved data strongly depends on the performance of the employed analysis procedure, which involves deconvolution of periodic and noisy data in this context. The aim of this article is to compare several deconvolution algorithms to retrieve the ultra-small angle X-ray scattering distribution in grating interferometry. We quantitatively compare the performance of three deconvolution procedures (i.e., Wiener, iterative Wiener and Lucy–Richardson) in case of realistically modeled, noisy and periodic input data. The simulations showed that the algorithm of Lucy–Richardson is the more reliable and more efficient as a function of the characteristics of the signals in the given context. The availability of a reliable data analysis procedure is essential for future developments in grating interferometry.

A new method for information retrieval in two-dimensional grating-based X-ray phase contrast imaging

Grating-based X-ray phase contrast imaging has been demonstrated to be an extremely powerful phase-sensitive imaging technique. By using two-dimensional (2D) gratings, the observable contrast is extended to two refraction directions. Recently, we have developed a novel reverse-projection (RP) method, which is capable of retrieving the object information efficiently with one-dimensional (1D) grating-based phase contrast imaging. In this contribution, we present its extension to the 2D grating-based X-ray phase contrast imaging, named the two-dimensional reverse-projection (2D-RP) method, for information retrieval. The method takes into account the nonlinear contributions of two refraction directions and allows the retrieval of the absorption, the horizontal and the vertical refraction images. The obtained information can be used for the reconstruction of the three-dimensional phase gradient field, and for an improved phase map retrieval and reconstruction. Numerical experiments are carried out, and the results confirm the validity of the 2D-RP method.

Quantitative phase contrast optimised cancerous cell differentiation via ptychography

This paper shows that visible-light ptychography can be used to distinguish quantitatively between healthy and tumorous unstained cells. Advantages of ptychography in comparison to conventional phase-sensitive imaging techniques are highlighted. A novel procedure to automatically refocus ptychographic reconstructions is also presented, which improves quantitative analysis.

Quantitative 3D refractive index decrement reconstruction using single-distance phase-contrast tomography data

X-ray propagation-based phase-contrast imaging is an attractive phase-sensitive imaging technique that has found applications in many research fields. Here, we report the investigations of a method which can quantitatively reconstruct in 3D the refractive index decrement of a quasi-homogeneous object using single-distance phase-contrast tomography data. The method extends the Born-type approximation phase-retrieval algorithm, which is based on the phase-attenuation duality (ε = δ/β, with constant ε) and suitable for homogeneous objects, to tomography and we study its application to quasi-homogeneous objects. The noise performance and the phase-attenuation duality influences of the method are also investigated. In simulation, the method allows us to quantitatively reconstruct the 3D refractive index decrement for quasi-homogeneous and weakly absorbing samples and it performs well in the practical noise situation. Furthermore, it shows a substantial contrast increase and successfully distinguishes different materials in a quasi-homogeneous and weakly absorbing sample from experimental data, even with inappropriate ε value.

Comparison of phase-sensitive imaging techniques for studying terahertz waves in structured LiNbO_3

Four phase-sensitive imaging methods (Talbot, phase contrast, Sagnac, and polarization gating) used for detecting terahertz-frequency waves in structured lithium niobate slabs are compared analytically and experimentally. It is demonstrated that both phase contrast and a self-compensating polarization gating geometry can generate in-focus images of the sample and quantitatively measure the terahertz electric field. Of these two methods polarization gating has better signal-to-noise ratio and so is preferred for most situations, while phase contrast imaging has better spatial resolution and so is preferred for measurements involving fine structures or near-field effects.

Correlated imaging with one-photon interference

We report an experiment in which the correlated imaging in an interferometer with chaotic light can be observed in the intensity pattern rather than the intensity correlation measurement. Similar to ghost imaging with thermal light, object and objective lens are not necessarily set in the same path. Moreover, the two imaging schemes satisfy the same imaging equation. The theoretical analysis shows that the correlated imaging of thermal light is ascribed to the first-order field correlation of the two separate paths, and as a result, it can also be performed through one-photon interference in an incoherent interferometer. Our experiment suggests a phase-sensitive imaging technique using a spatially incoherent light source.

Breast cancer imaging: A perspective for the next decade

Breast imaging is largely indicated for detection, diagnosis, and clinical management of breast cancer and for evaluation of the integrity of breast implants. In this work, a prospective view of techniques for breast cancer detection and diagnosis is provided based on an assessment of current trends. The potential role of emerging techniques that are under various stages of research and development is also addressed. It appears that the primary imaging tool for breast cancer screening in the next decade will be high-resolution, high-contrast, anatomical x-ray imaging with or without depth information. MRI and ultrasonography will have an increasingly important adjunctive role for imaging high-risk patients and women with dense breasts. Pilot studies with dedicated breast CT have demonstrated high-resolution three-dimensional imaging capabilities, but several technological barriers must be overcome before clinical adoption. Radionuclide based imaging techniques and x-ray imaging with intravenously injected contrast offer substantial potential as a diagnostic tools and for evaluation of suspicious lesions. Developing optical and electromagnetic imaging techniques hold significant potential for physiologic information and they are likely to be of most value when integrated with or adjunctively used with techniques that provide anatomic information. Experimental studies with breast specimens suggest that phase-sensitive x-ray imaging techniques can provide edge enhancement and contrast improvement but more research is needed to evaluate their potential role in clinical breast imaging. From the technological perspective, in addition to improvements within each modality, there is likely to be a trend towards multi-modality systems that combine anatomic with physiologic information. We are also likely to transition from a standardized screening, where all women undergo the same imaging exam (mammography), to selection of a screening modality or modalities based an individual-risk or other classification.

Computerized tomography based on DEI refraction information

Conventional computerized tomography (CT) technique is based on the absorption contrast. In recent years, X-ray phase-contrast CT (PCCT) has been developing rapidly. It uses the phase information to reconstruct the object and provide high contrast and spatial resolution. Diffraction enhanced imaging (DEI) method is one of the three phase-sensitive X-ray imaging techniques. DEI method employs an analyzer crystal to extract the object's refraction information which can be used for CT. However, when DEI refraction CT is combined with the conventional CT algorithm, it should be satisfied that the refraction information of an arbitrary point in the object is invariable at every projection view. In this paper, the invariance condition of refraction information is analyzed and two feasible methods are provided for reconstruction. Using these two methods, two samples of weak absorption are reconstructed with the experimental data obtained at Beijing Synchrotron Radiation Facility (BSRF).

Clinical mammography at the SYRMEP beam line: Toward the digital detection system

From the very beginning, the Synchrotron Radiation (SR) for Medical Physics (SYRMEP) collaboration has studied possibilities of improving image quality in mammography, by optimizing source and detector devices. Preliminary studies on test objects and “in vitro” breast tissue samples have been carried out at a dedicated bending magnet beam line built at the ELETTRA SR facility. Exploiting the characteristics of SR beams, it has been possible to investigate several phase-sensitive imaging techniques. After the approval of the concerned authorities, clinical examinations have been started with encouraging results. In a first step, screen film systems are used as detection device, but the use of digital detectors is presently under investigation. As custom solution, silicon microstrip sensors of 50 μm pitch, designed by INFN Trieste and manufactured by Hamamatsu, have been directly bonded to the Mythen single-photon counting read out electronics developed at the Swiss Light Source for SR diffraction experiments. The new version of the read-out ASIC has been tested at the SYRMEP beam line and proved to be able to operate with low noise and high counting rates also for imaging applications, where the cross-talk between the channels is extremely critical.

Magnified x-ray phase imaging using asymmetric Bragg reflection: Experiment and theory

X-ray imaging using asymmetric Bragg reflection in the hard x-ray regime opens the way to improve the spatial resolution limit below $1\phantom{\rule{0.3em}{0ex}}\ensuremath{\mu}\mathrm{m}$ by magnifying the image before detection, simultaneously providing a strong phase contrast. A theoretical formalism of the imaging process is established. Based on this algorithm, numerical simulations are performed and demonstrate that both Fresnel propagation and Bragg diffraction contribute to contrast formation. The achievable resolution of this technique is investigated theoretically; the results obtained can be used to improve future experimental setups. Furthermore, the minimum detectable phase gradient is estimated, for comparison with other phase sensitive imaging techniques. Results from biological objects demonstrate that the technique is viable for imaging both in two and three dimensions. Refraction contrast images are extracted from experimental projection images by an algorithm similar to diffraction-enhanced imaging (DEI), and used to achieve three-dimensional tomographic reconstruction.
