Shadows in the Spotlight: Navigating Organizational Transparency in Digital Contexts

AbstractThis article examines the potential implications of pursuing organizational transparency ideals in contemporary datafied societies, i.e., societies where multiple aspects of social life take the shape of digital data. The article develops a communication perspective of transparency which is valuable because it not only considers transparency as a matter of providing and accessing information about already existing practices but conceptualizes transparency as a performative practice with the potential to shape subjects, relations, and forms of organizing. The article identifies common trends in extant research on transparency, discusses different ways of thinking about transparency, and examines their implications for organizational settings. Taken together, the article problematizes predominant tendencies that theorize transparency simply from an informational standpoint, (i.e., as information disclosure) and identifies key challenges specific to digitally driven transparency. The article ends by discussing some implications of digitally driven transparency practices and sketches future research directions for organizations that face transparency challenges in the current social contexts where data is abundant.

Expressing opinions about information security in an organization: the spiral of silence theory perspective

Purpose Expressing views on organizational information security (IS) by employees is vital for improving security processes, policies and trainings, while non-communication may conceal the true state of the human factor of IS and lead to security breaches. The purpose of this paper is to introduce the concept of opinion expressing about organizational IS, provide an explanatory model based on the theory of spiral of silence and offer its empirical validation. Design/methodology/approach Data from a web-based survey among the employees of one the universities in the European Union (n = 504) was analyzed with regression analysis to investigate the proposed hypotheses. Findings The study reveals that employees with positive opinions about IS will be more willing to share their opinions with coworkers and management. However, when employees perceive that their pro-IS opinions are not shared by other coworkers, they will remain silent, which increases the risk of problematic opinions spreading throughout the organization. Research limitations/implications The study highlights the need to focus on the communication perspectives of organizational information security, an area often overlooked in the human factor of information security research. Practical implications The results highlight the need to examine the gap between the dominant climate of opinion about IS in the organization and the display of compliant IS behaviors in order to strengthen IS endeavors. Organizations are encouraged to facilitate open dialogue about IS processes, policies and training and implement mechanisms for considering employees’ feedback in order to improve the organization’s IS. Originality/value The study contributes to a growing body of research that moves beyond viewing employees merely as subjects of compliance, recognizing instead their agency in IS issues that can enhance organizational resilience. To the best of the authors’ knowledge, this is the first study to apply the spiral of silence theory in the IS field, thereby helping to overcome the lack of communication science perspectives in organizational IS research.

Women in Conflict Communication Perspective (Case Study of the Role of Women in Maintaining Harmony in Manado)

Cultural diversity in Indonesia is analogous to a double-edged sword. On the one hand, it can be seen as a source of strength, but on the other hand, it can be seen as a weakness. In April 2022, SETARA Institut, a non-governmental organization for democracy and peace, announced 10 cities in Indonesia that were rated as having the highest level of tolerance, one of which was Manado. Minahasa society adheres to the Sitou Timou Tumou Tou philosophy. In this philosophy there is openness, mutual respect, mutual assistance and assistance. Multicultural societies have a tendency towards conflict. In this case, women activists in Manado play a role in establishing harmonization. The research aims to discover the role of women in maintaining harmony in Manado, as well as the conflict communication used to prevent conflict. This research uses a descriptive qualitative approach with a case study method. The object of this research is the role of Manado women in maintaining harmony and conflict management. The subject of Manado women's activists. This research uses several data collection methods, including interviews, observation, literature study and online data tracing. The research results show that women activists actively carry out interfaith or interfaith dialogue with various social organizations, especially Islamic organizations. Women activists also took the initiative to establish the Peace Love Movement which seeks to build dialogue and make dialogue a part of their lifestyle. In order to build public awareness of multiculturalism, every Human Rights Day, namely December 10, the Love and Peace Movement holds a Diversity Festival.

Decision support for strategic microgrid design integrating governance, business, intelligence, communication, and physical perspectives

Microgrids are custom-designed, but their extensive design options hinder their dissemination. Consequently, microgrid-interested parties need strategic support to identify suitable design options for their use case. This paper develops a decision support artifact in the form of a decision tree for recommending the most suitable microgrid design for a project. A multi-step design science-oriented process was used. First, a morphological analysis of academic literature was conducted to deduce all possible microgrid design options and visualize them in a morphological box. Once done, 62 real-world microgrids of diverse types and locations were classified according to the morphological box. The produced dataset was used to derive five microgrid design archetypes algorithmically using cluster analysis. The dataset and their associated archetypes were then fed into a rule-mining algorithm to generate a decision tree that recommends the appropriate microgrid archetype based on up to four questions about, for instance, the microgrid's objective and the connectivity to the main grid. Furthermore, design principles for each microgrid archetype recommendation were formulated. The developed design artifact serves as applicable knowledge and a benchmark framework for researchers, as well as a comprehensive and simultaneously simplified decision-making framework for practitioners.

This study examines the role and impact of Weibo marketing accounts using the "Wang Xiaofei and Barbie Hsu (Da S) Incident" as a case study. It begins by defining Weibo marketing accounts, highlighting their active engagement in trending topics and their content patterns. Using a model of public opinion formation, the study explores how these accounts influence public discourse from inception to consensus formation stages. Analysis of both the propagation effects (such as amplification, catalysis, and fission) and operational effects (influencing behavior, changing perceptions, and stimulating further exploration) reveals the significant impact of these accounts on information dissemination and public opinion on Weibo.

A RETROSPECTIVE OF PILGRIMAGE LITERATURE AS A COMMUNICATION GUIDE TO THE WORLD OF SACRED CULTURE

The purpose of the article is to examine the pilgrimage genre in literature as a social and communication guide in the world of contemporary sacred culture from a communication perspective. Different types of guidebooks are considered, i.e., interviews, travelogues, diaries, records, review texts, memoirs, notes, and pilgrimage travel notes are given as a necessary communication tool during a pilgrimage. The research methodology consists of descriptive (using observation and interpretation techniques), historical and literary, and biographical methods of analyzing pilgrimage literature. The author used the analytical-descriptive method, which consists in the selection, description and analysis of data; the system-structural method helped to arrange the works of different genres and apply them according to the subject in chronological order, reproducing the logical sequence of the material presented. The scientific novelty of the article involves expanding the concept of pilgrimage and the pilgrimage genre in literature as a social and communication guide to the world of contemporary sacred culture based on pilgrimage guides, diaries, memoirs, pilgrimage notes, and other sacred literature. Conclusions. In the article, the author examines the multi-genre works of pilgrimage literature as a communication guide to the sacred world in order to encourage the transformation from a book or a movie to a real pilgrimage for those who have such an opportunity. The article analyzes pilgrimage records, guidebooks, diaries, travelogues, novels, novellas, short stories, and pilgrimage notes to study pilgrimage from a communication perspective for different categories of pilgrims. As a rule, various categories of pilgrims and representatives of different professions go on sacred journeys, and then they write memoirs, pilgrimage texts, songs, scripts for future plays and films, and artists reproduce all details in artworks, and thus pilgrimage penetrates all spheres of an individual’s cultural life, which indicates the highly spiritual component of such journeys. Before going on a pilgrimage, you need to prepare thoroughly, both physically and spiritually, so that guides allow you to follow the trail of others and then plan your sacred journey relatively well. You will never return from a pilgrimage the same as you were before because such travels utterly change the vector of your life. Observing different groups of pilgrims, we can conclude that they all have one thing in common: spiritual enrichment, purification from sins and temptations, and the achievement of catharsis, which will be present in the everyday life of each of us for as long as possible. These works can keep living in ideas for film scripts about pilgrimage, thus expanding their socio-cultural horizons.

Comparative Study of the Cultural Connotations of Animals in China and the West from the Perspective of Intercultural Communication: Taking Chinese Zodiacs as an Example

As we know, language is a cultural carrier. Different social backgrounds and national cultures have a great effect on the cultural connotations of idiom. Along with the development and progress of human society, animal words gradually have got their established connotations in all languages. However, the connotations of animal words in one language do not necessarily coincide with those in another because of geographical environment, convention, history, and religion in different cultures. Therefore, this paper intends to take the Chinese Zodiac as a research object from a cross-cultural perspective to explore the differences in animal culture between China and the West. By comparing factors such as social customs, religious beliefs, and natural environment, explore several methods of translating animal idiom so as to promote smooth cross-cultural communication and provide references for related research.

A Study on the Sinicization of The Communist Manifesto from the Perspective of Cross-cultural Communication

The Communist Manifesto represents Marxism and matters as a source of Communism. Since the first Chinese translation of The Communist Manifesto was published in 1920, there have been 8 translations according to research. This paper expounds changes in the translation of The Communist Manifesto from the perspective of cross-cultural communication, applying an interdisciplinary research method, and combining cross-cultural communication, translation studies and relevant subjects. This paper shows that the translation of The Communist Manifesto gradually indicates Chinese characteristics with the development of times and introduces three means of international communication of Marxism with Chinese characteristics, which is conducive to promoting translation, broadening the field of Marxism works on translations, strengthening ideal and belief of socialism with Chinese characteristics, constructing discourse system of socialism with Chinese characteristics, and enlightening significance for the international communication of Chinese Marxism.

A Molecular Communication Perspective on Synchronization of Coupled Microfluidic-Spectroscopy.

A challenge for real-time monitoring of biochemical processes, such as cells, is detection of biologically relevant molecules. This is due to the fact that spectroscopy methods for detection may perturb the cellular environment. One approach to overcome this problem is coupled microfluidic-spectroscopy, where a microfluidic output channel is introduced in order to observe biologically relevant molecules. This approach allows for non-passive spectroscopy methods, such as mass spectrometry, to identify the structure of molecules released by the cell. Due to the non-negligible length of the microfluidic channel, when a sequence of stimuli are applied to a cell it is not straightforward to determine which spectroscopy samples correspond to a given stimulus. In this paper, we propose a solution to this problem by taking a molecular communication (MC) perspective on the coupled microfluidic-spectroscopy system. In particular, assignment of samples to a stimulus is viewed as a synchronization problem. We develop two new algorithms for synchronization in this context and carry out a detailed theoretical and numerical study of their performance. Our results show improvements over maximum-likelihood synchronization algorithms in terms of detection performance when there are uncertainties in the composition of the microfluidic channel.

Situational privacy: theorizing privacy as communication and media practice

Abstract Under dataveillance as the “new normal,” datafied societies render privacy seemingly impossible. Communication and media privacy scholars foster relational and contextual perspectives to explore how agents and infrastructures could nevertheless maintain a certain degree of self-determined control over the flow of data. Situational privacy accesses this debate from an alternative practice-based perspective. Putting emphasis on the ongoing transformation of privacy, this contribution leverages recent empirical and theoretical thoughts of practice-based privacy research as well as conceptual work on the notion of the situation in social theory. Shifting the focus onto privacy breakdown, mundane criticism, and pragmatic measures of “good enough privacy,” it anchors privacy in everyday routines and situations. Situational privacy offers a communication and media perspective on privacy as a critical concept in transformation.

Analysis of Language Arts in Japanese Language and Literature in a Cross-Cultural Context

In the contemporary era of rapid globalization, cross-cultural communication has had a profound impact on the language arts of Japanese language and literature. This paper explores the language arts in Japanese language and literature from the perspective of cross-cultural communication, focusing on how different cultural elements have been integrated into Japanese language and literature under the background of globalization, and how this integration has changed the use of vocabulary, syntactic structure, rhetorical patterns and expressive techniques, and the creation of contexts and the construction of imagery in the Japanese language. Ethical Competencies in Machine Learning from a Communicational Perspective in Educational Process

The term "artificial intelligence" (AI) refers to computer programs equipped with numerous competencies, such as making calculations, grouping and categorizing data, or communicating with the user in ethnic languages. On the other hand, artificial intelligence systems do not have certain properties, and among them, apart from the lack of "creative abilities", is indifference to the moral aspect of actions when searching and compiling data or cataloging phenomena. This study aims to discuss selected reasons for this state of affairs in the context of machine learning (ML) methodology, including the issues and applications of artificial intelligence from the perspective of scientific communication that occurs in the educational process. Given this goal, a research problem was formulated in the form of a question: How are ethical competencies developed in the machine learning process in the context of communication occurring in the educational process? In order to answer this research question, the text analysis method and the synthesis method were used. As a result of the research, it was determined that conducting machine learning with human participation, as well as using artificial intelligence systems previously learned with human participation, may enable the transmission of moral content in the normative sense to a cybernetic machine. Since human participation allows supervised learning of cybernetic machines, this type of learning, used as the sole method or in combination with another method, offers the opportunity to provide applications with the desired information about socio-cultural rules. Fully independent training of cybernetic machines does not ensure they collect information on ethical aspects desirable in communication during the educational process because open data sets on which machine learning takes place may contain harmful content, amplifying negative social phenomena.

Artistic mathematical analysis of the influence of modern urban architecture and lighting on human visual information transmission

AIMS: In order to implement the relevant laws, regulations and technical policies of national urban planning and environmental protection, and meet people’s living and human health, since the 21st century, various countries have adopted various methods to improve the urban ecological environment in varying degrees. The influence of the environment on people is first through the human visual response to the brain, so that the human brain can respond quickly and affect their human health. However, human modernization has brought many serious adverse factors to mankind. We must attach great importance to it. METHODS: Using the methods of field investigation, mathematical analysis and observation, and using artistic mathematical methods from the perspective of visual communication, the effects of these factors were analyzed. RESULTS: The analysis results show that more than 80% of people believe that the stronger the artistry of urban environment, the better human health and the longer life span. Only 10% of people are indifferent to the artistry of urban environment. 10% thought it was OK to have a place to live. CONCLUSION: 85% of people require that the urban environment should first have artistic beauty. Human beings must consider the artistry of the urban environment as much as possible in the process of urban modernization. The stronger the artistry of the environment, the more beautiful the modern environment will be. With a beautiful environment, human beings will live longer and longer. Effective measures must be taken to avoid excessive confusion in the construction and layout of cities.

Code switching patterns in Kazakh-Russian hybrid language practice: An empirical study

The study investigates Kazakh-Russian and Russian-Kazakh code switching in the framework of hybrid language practice to provide insights into the sense-making process among bilinguals. The unique characteristics of the synchronic linguistic situation in Kazakhstan stem from historically rooted ethnic bi- and multilingualism. Language switching has evolved into a tool for addressing communicative partners and sustaining communication in bilingual culture, rather than being viewed as a deviant pattern. It appears to be a dynamic resource for ensuring mutual understanding and harmonised communication. The study aims to reveal the motivations behind individuals’ language switching, how Kazakh and Russian speakers explain hybrid communication, and their sentiments towards it. Data from two surveys conducted in January-February of 2021 and January of 2024 are presented. Each survey involved 50 respondents with higher education, ranging in age from 21 to 40, who have resided in Kazakhstan for an extended period, with many being native-born residents. We argue that switching between the Kazakh and Russian languages serves as a communicative tool utilised by Kazakh and Russian speakers to signify their belonging to a specific sociocultural community. The study posits that hybrid language practice can be viewed from two underlying perspectives: from a ‘deficit’ perspective, signalling limited proficiency in Russian or/and Kazakh, and from a more complex sense-making communicative perspective, assisting interaction. As part of the sense-making process and in sustaining interaction with communication partners, code switching serves an instrumental function. Importantly, hybrid language practice is not portrayed as a sign of cultural decline. There is no strong correlation between the mixing of Russian and Kazakh and social, cultural, and educational barriers. Further implications for research are prompted by the rapidly changing situation. The development of the Kazakh language as a state language is becoming a major goal and central focus in this evolving context, which inevitably raises the issues of linguistic ideology. Distinguishing between ideologically neutral analysis and critical analysis of language use as a tool of symbolic power for specific social groups would provide a more gradient picture of the dynamics in Kazakhstan’s bi- and multilingual situation.

Research data was obtained through interviews with the Police Chief, Deputy Police Chief, Police Propam, Police Sumda Section, Police Binmas Unit, and Batubara Police Traffic Unit, as well as through documents relevant to the research focus, such as pictures, photos, notes or related writings. . Data collection was carried out through interviews, observation and documentation studies. Data analysis was carried out using reduction, presentation and conclusion techniques. The validity of the data was tested using triangulation techniques. The research results confirm that effective organizational communication, rooted in Islamic principles, and supported by the application of precision at the Batubara Police has a key role in fostering positive relations with the community. By presenting information openly and clearly and providing responsive and responsible services, the police can build a positive image and increase public trust. The synergy between effective communication, Islamic values, and precise application is a vital foundation for achieving the goal of quality public services and increasing the level of public trust. However, handling inhibiting factors, such as unprofessional behavior, is required through strict internal supervision and ongoing training to increase the competence of police officers.</em></p></td></tr></tbody></table>

Investigating social media users’ preferences of content and sourcing during a crisis

Crisis communication is not a linear communication occurrence as users seek out information from multiple sources and contribute their own opinions or frames to the discussion. This study focuses on a user-centered and public-oriented perspective of crisis communication on social media. The study investigated how users received and reacted to crisis communication messages from the media, organizations, and other users. A survey analyzed framed crisis communication consumption and examined source preferences for content and credibility during a crisis. Participants responded to crisis posts, determined overall source credibility, and indicated how they viewed crisis communication from other users. The results of this study indicate a needed shift in the role of media effects and an emphasis on credibility and reliance on organizational messages.
