The mediating role of employee engagement on the relationship between learning culture and employee performance in service sector

Purpose Cultivation of a learning culture and subsequent enhancements in employee performance can be translated through employee engagement. This study aims to examine the mediating role of employee engagement in the relationship between the learning culture and employee performance. Design/methodology/approach This research adopted a quantitative approach, wherein 450 questionnaires were distributed among employees in both public and private sectors in Nepal. A total of 389 questionnaires were returned, followed by two to three reminders. Convenience sampling was utilized, and the data was collected through a questionnaire survey. Descriptive analysis and Structural Equation Modeling – Path analysis was used to describe and hypotheses testing. Data was analyzed using SmartPLS 4.0 and SPSS 24v. Findings It was found that employee engagement has a mediating effect on the relationship between the learning culture and employee performance. Learning culture also has a positive influence on employee engagement that eventually affects the performance of the employees. This conclusion suggests that fostering a learning culture within an organization should be focused on cultivating an environment that promotes active employee participation, thereby enhancing overall employee performance. Originality/value This article provides significant insights into the cultivation of a learning culture inside firms, with a specific focus on establishing an atmosphere that fosters active employee engagement to improve overall employee performance in the service sector. This tool has the potential to facilitate further investigation and progress within the area, while also promoting the adoption of evidence-based learning practices and their associated implications.

The effects of knowledge management processes on service sector performance: evidence from Saudi Arabia

This study examines the effect of Knowledge Management (KM) processes on organizational performance in Saudi Arabian service organizations. It focuses on knowledge creation, capture, sharing, and application, and examines their effects on quality, operational, and innovation performance. While the service sector can enhance operational efficiencies through effective KM implementation, the extent of this impact, particularly in terms of quality and operational performance in developing countries like Saudi Arabia, remains underexplored. The study uses a quantitative methodology, obtaining 605 valid responses from Saudi service sector managers through an online self-reported questionnaire. Structural equation modeling validates the research model and tests the hypotheses. Results indicate that knowledge sharing has a nonsignificant effect, while knowledge creation, capture, and application have substantial impacts. Specifically, knowledge application significantly improves operational performance, while knowledge creation influences quality and innovation performance. Organizations are advised to understand their KM processes’ structure to effectively implement and leverage their impact on performance. Emphasizing knowledge sharing through personalized communication channels, employee development opportunities, and effective incentive systems is recommended to sustain engagement and motivation. Furthermore, prioritizing KM tools and technology for seamless knowledge flow across organizational levels and implementing collaborative tools can enhance innovative capabilities, adaptability, and competitive advantages.

Franchise management strategy driving franchisee performance in the service sectors in Thailand

AbstractThis empirical study aims to investigate the impact of different dimensions of franchise management strategies on franchisee performance in the professional service sector. The hypothesized relationship was supported by agency theory, which explains the situation of two parties, one representing the other in day‐to‐day transactions. The samples were 259 managers and supervisors who had worked for franchise service businesses located in Thailand and had regular contact with the franchisor of the global firm. Purposive and snowballing methods were employed to distribute questionnaires to the target respondents. The results of structural equation modeling indicated a good fit of the data to the proposed model. Hypothesis testing revealed noteworthy direct influences of four franchise management strategies, namely innovative culture, supportive service, information exchange, and recommendation, on the performance of franchisees. This study offers valuable insights into the importance of implementing effective franchise management strategies and their direct implications for franchisee performance. The findings have practical implications for franchise businesses, highlighting key areas of focus for enhancing franchisee success and overall business performance.

Foreign Direct Investment and Service Sector Performance in a Developing Economy: Lessons from Nigeria

This study analyzes how foreign direct investment (FDI) affected the output of Nigeria's service sector from 1980 to 2020. The study uses service sector output as the regresand, FDI as the major regressor, and exchange rate (EXR) and government spending (GEX) were used as check variables. The data were sourced from the CBN Statistical Bulletin 2020. The nature of the variables necessitated the use of ECM. Results from the short run ECM dynamic model reveals that service sector output responds positively to FDI. We observed that the lag value of service sector output was positive and significant, implying that service sector output responds to past service sector output positively in Nigeria. The ECM's one-period lag coefficient was negative and significant at 0.05, indicating that service sector output adjusts to changes in explanatory variables and its own lag within a year. The ECMt-1 corrects 17.3% of the disequilibrium between static and short-run dynamic models of Service Sector Output (SSO) within a year on average. The study found that the service sector plays a crucial role in this developing economy's economic growth and development. It is an essential macroeconomic sector that can improve the economy's overall performance and influence the flow and direction of income as well as the Balance of Payments (BOP) position. According to the findings, the study suggests that the government should uphold financial responsibility and allocate more funds towards building necessary infrastructure to support the service sector's growth. This will ultimately improve the overall performance of the Nigerian economy.

Real exchange rate undervaluation, regional integration and services sector performance: evidence from the East African Community

We undertake to estimate the effects of real exchange rate misalignment and regional integration on the service sector performance in selected countries from East Africa during the period of 1991–2017. The main findings, based on the traditional Pooled Mean Group ARDL technique as well as the alternative panel Cross-Sectional Autoregressive distributed lag (CS-ARDL) approach render support for an undervaluation-led services sector performance as well as the importance of regional integration in the observed linkage. Additional evidence reveals that both the monetary policy and the fiscal policy are key channels via which currency undervaluation impacts on the services sector output. The existence of non-linearities in an inverted U-shaped curve is equally confirmed in the data, where small and moderate undervaluations spur service sector performance just as large undervaluations after some threshold hinder it. Exchange rate volatility is found detrimental to the services sector in the long run. Policies that would help promote the underlying catalysts of undervaluation, curtail exchange rate volatility as well as those that promote deeper regional integration should be strengthened. Likewise, undervaluation policies would yield optimal benefits to the services sector once they are accompanied by well-calculated monetary and fiscal policies.

SERVICES SECTOR IN SARAWAK: CHALLENGES AND WAY FORWARD

Service sector is an important sector in Sarawak and it contributes about 36 percent to Sarawak’s Gross Domestic Product (GDP) in 2020. The sector also contributes 56 percent of total employment of the state. However, there are some challenges in service sector. Among the key challenges are low productivity growth, shortage of skilled workforce and weak internet connectivity in rural area that restricted the development of service sector. This paper presents the performance of service sector in Sarawak and the challenges of the service sector. The proposed recommendations to face the challenges include, providing training to semi-skilled and low-skilled workers to improve the productivity, providing quality and cheap food to attract tourists, and developing internet infrastructure in rural Sarawak.

Impact of Age, Gender, and Experience on Task Performance in Service Sector: An Empirical Study

Purpose: The prior purpose of this study is to find the impact of various constructs on the job performance of the employees. The study is influenced by the service sector employees. The Study related to the Job Performance of Service Sector Employees in India. Job Performance has two variables; task and contextual performance. Task performance reflects a representative's essential occupation obligations; while relevant execution alludes to conduct that influences the more extensive hierarchical, social, and mental climate in which task execution happens. Methodology/Approach/Design: The Primary data were collected with the help of a structured questionnaire. Although some of the secondary sources were also consulted to find out the directions of the research. Data were collected from 83 lower-level employees (both and female) of all ages and experiences working in the service sector. Data were analyzed based on age, gender, and experience to know the actual performance on their job. Stata was used to analyze the data. Findings: The inferences drawn from the current study reveal the scenario of the level of the job performance of employees working service sector. The study is focusing on task performance, as the results of the study are significantly positive to the job performance of service sector employees. The study reveals that the adult youth have a high level of task performance; whereas the older youth have a low level of task performance. Research Limitations: The study conclusion is based on three constructs. So, the findings may not be generalized for the entire service sector. Most of the respondents in this study were either from no formal education or from low education level because the data were collected from lower lever employees where in some of the departments no formal education is much required. Therefore, there may be variations in their responses. Practical Implications: As the primary aim of this research is to find out the impact of various constructs on task performance, which can be important for practice, theory, and subsequent research. Originality/Value: This research is grounded on the data collected from primary sources; findings have been supported by various secondary sources available, especially in the service sector.

Responsiveness of Service Sector Growth to Financial Development in Nigeria: Evidence from 1981-2019

Purpose: This paper explores the relationship between financial development and output of the service sector in Nigeria over the period 1981-2019. It presents an analysis of the long-run and short-run impacts of financial development on the performance growth of the service sector, as well as the cointegration between the variables. Approach/Methodology/Design: We test the time series for stationarity using Phillips-Perron and Augmented Dickey-Fuller unit root tests. We adopt the Auto-Regressive Distributed Lag (ARDL) approach to analyze the relationship between financial development and service sector performance in Nigeria. Market capitalization, monetization ratio, and the ratio of credit to the private sector to GDP represent the indicators of financial development. Findings: The results of the study show that market capitalization and monetization ratio have significant positive impacts on service sector output, respectively. However, the effect of credit to the private sector on service sector performance is insignificant and negative. We find no cointegration among the investigated variables; while, the result of the error correction estimation indicates that it takes about two years to restore the long-run equilibrium after a deviation. In light of the findings made, this paper concludes that financial development exerts a significant positive effect on service sector performance in Nigeria. Practical Implications: This study is valuable at this period of economic uncertainties in Nigeria. With input from this paper, policymakers in the public sector via the formulation and implementation of effective policy measures such as fiscal measures can channel the benefits of financial sector development to the service sector to create an enabling business environment for the sector, especially as it concerns the provision of private credit to the sector. Originality/value: Based on literature review, this paper for the first time investigated the link between financial development and the performance of the service sector in Nigeria as defined by the CBN Statistical Bulletin 2019 edition.

Quantitative Research to Investigate the Relationship of Factors Affecting Employee

This explanatory research aims to study an association between the factors affecting the performance of banks working in Pakistan. The current study was conducted using a cross-sectional research design, data for this study was collected from 5 private banks of Lahore, Pakistan. A total sample of three hundred bankers was recruited by using a random sampling technique and their ages ranged between 25-45 years. For the analysis of the hypothesis, diverse statistical instruments like PROCESS analysis for mediation and Pearson Product Moment correlation are applied. The results of the study show that employee loyalty, as well as service quality, mediates an association between employee empowerment and financial performance. Numerous other variables influence the financial performance of banks which are not included in this study. The proposed model guides the management in analyzing the service sector's performance.

Issues of Human Resource Management Practices on Organization Performance: A Case Study of Nepal Telecom

Objective: To identify and evaluate the impact of human resource practices on organization performance in service sector.
 Methods and Materials: Two main sources of data namely primary and secondary were used in the study. The primary data were collected through mail questionnaire method from 132 employees of Nepal Telecom organization for the study. The secondary source was through journals, textbooks and annual reports of Nepal Telecom.
 After collecting responses from 132 respondents, the data were analyzed through SPSS. The value of Cronbach’s Alpha (α) of overall questionnaire is 0.84, which suggests the reliability of primary data. Descriptive as well as explorative research designs were used to analyze the primary and secondary data.
 Results and Conclusion: The coefficient of determination between human resource practices and organization performance is 70.89%. There is strong correlation among all independent and dependent variables. All three independent variables are significant positive impact on dependent variable. The study concluded that there is a positive relationship between human resource practices and organization performance of Nepal Telecom organization.

Service sector performance by a non-parametric approach: a critical review

Due to intangibility and heterogeneity of the service sector, measuring and benchmarking the performance is a critical issue. Over the years, many researchers have focused on measuring the performance of the service sector using the non-parametric approach. Present study carried out an extensive literature survey targeting the performance measurement in the service sector using data envelopment analysis (DEA), a non-parametric approach. An attempt has been made primarily to showcase a holistic list of different models of DEA as applicable in diverse sectors in the Indian economy. The implications of the findings will prove beneficial in quantifying pros and cons of the different policy devised by the practitioners in the banking sector of Indian economy. The outcome of the study will be helpful for researchers as well as academicians in identifying the possible models of DEA that may be used to benchmark the performance of the concerned sector while identifying factors that affects the performance.

The Impact of Leadership Style on Organizational Performance in Pakistan’s Service Sector

The thesis paper’s aim is to asses and study the impact on organizational outcome or performance of the three comparative leadership styles identified by Bass & Alveoli in 1981. The research purpose is to find out how a manager’s leadership style impacts his subordinates’ performance. The leadership styles studied in this research are Passive-Avoidant leadership, Transformational Leadership and Transactional Leadership. This relation has been theoretically explored through literature review and empirically tested in the Pakistani service sector through survey questionnaire. The paper measured Organizational performance through leadership outcome and subordinates job performance and leadership through Multifactor Leadership Questionnaire (MLQ). Organizational performance can be measured by efficiency and effectiveness of the firm’s operations in terms of profit, net growth rate, return on asset, NPV and return on equity, etc. A comparative analysis of the three main types of leadership styles is done in its relation to organizational performance with job performance as its proxy in an organization in this paper. This research study was conducted to examine the relationships between Bass’s leadership styles and organisational performance in service sector of Pakistan. The findings of the research showed consistent results across all types of employees irrespective of their gender, level in firm or the type of service industry that they belong to at a holistic level. Transformational Leadership and Transactional Leadership were found to have significant positive correlation with organizational performance in Pakistan’s service sector. The negative effect of Passive-Avoidant leaders was found to be insignificant in the service sector In Pakistan a combination of leadership style is used while reward based team leading is found to be more effective in most of the sectors like banking and sales while mentorship based is found to be more effective in academic settings.

Market(ing) Wisdom Differences between Family and Non-Family Firms: An Empirical Study on Small and Medium Enterprises

In today’s competitive business environment, family and non-family small and medium enterprises (SMEs) strive to survive despite many challenges. Market knowledge and marketing efforts are crucial for them to sustain and enhance business with limited resources. In this paper, we examined three constructs (i) market orientation, (ii) marketing capabilities and (iii) marketing practices impact on the SMEs’ service sector performance. The interaction effect of ownership type (family and non-family firms) was also observed in the model. Data was collected from 240 SMEs in three major metropolitan cities. This study found positive relationships of each construct (market orientation, (ii) marketing capabilities and (iii) marketing practices) on firm performance as hypothesised. The interaction effect of ownership type i.e. family and non-family, evident on marketing capabilities and SMEs’ performance. Non-family businesses are open for adopting new ideas and personnel into decision making. Family firms should be more adaptable to compete with non-family firms. The managerial and theoretical implications discussed in family and non-family firms’ perspective.

Service Sector Performance, Industry and Growth in Nigeria

This article extends previous empirical studies on service-industrial sector interactions and their impact on growth. It provides evidence from quarterly time series data using OLS, from 2010 to 2016 to account for new subsectors introduced from 2010 following the rebasing of the Nigerian economy. The article employs a disaggregated model to capture the individual productivities of subsectors. Series stationarity was determined with the ADF and PP test, thereafter Johansen technique was applied. The results indicate that while both services and the industrial sector contributed significantly to the economic growth (GDP) of Nigeria, some subsectors i.e. public administration, professional, scientific and technical services, transport (road, rail, pipeline, air, water), utilities (electricity, gas, and water supply, sewage, waste management) were found to be deficient. Finally, this article draws some policy implications to further strengthen the service and industrial sectors so as to maximise the potentials therein through the prescription of sector-specific policies.
