Evapotranspiration variation of soil‐plant‐atmosphere continuum in subalpine scrubland of Qilian Mountains in China

AbstractThe water cycle in the soil‐plant‐atmosphere continuum is an important element of hydrological and ecological studies, and differences in the composition characteristics of hydrogen and oxygen stable isotopes in different water bodies can indicate water cycling processes. In this study, hydrogen and oxygen isotopes of precipitation, soil water and plant water samples had been collected in the subalpine scrubland of the Qilian Mountains from May to October 2019. The Craig‐Gordon model, the isotopic steady‐state (ISS) assumption, the Keeling Plot model and the two‐source mixing model were used to analyse the stable isotope compositions of different water bodies, the stable isotope characteristics of water vapour of soil evaporation and plant transpiration and the variation of evapotranspiration in the SPAC of the subalpine scrubland. The results showed that plant transpiration (FT) contributed 87.28% and 86.95% to evapotranspiration and soil evaporation (FE) contributed 12.72% and 13.05% to evapotranspiration in the growing season on semi‐sunny and semi‐shaded aspects, respectively, indicating that evapotranspiration in the subalpine scrubland mainly came from the transpiration of scrubland plants. In the early of the growing season (May–June), due to the rapid expansion of plant leaves, the contribution of transpiration to evapotranspiration was at a high level, which intensified transpiration and led to a gradual increase of the transpiration contribution. In the middle of the growing season (July–August), owing to better conditions of rain and heat that made plants grow vigorously, plant transpiration made the highest contribution to evapotranspiration more than 90%, which caused to an overwhelming contribution of plant transpiration to evapotranspiration. In the later of growing season (September to October), the contribution of plant transpiration to evapotranspiration decreased significantly while that of soil evaporation increased, which was because plant photosynthesis and respiration gradually declined for losing their leaves of scrub plants and the relative atmospheric humidity was lower.

Transmission characteristics and the factors influencing stable oxygen isotopes in precipitation, soil water, and drip water in Remi Cave, Western Hunan, China

Understanding the modern transport processes of δ18O between different waters in cave systems can provide a basis for the paleoenvironmental interpretation of records of stalagmite δ18O. We conducted monthly in-situ monitoring of local precipitation, soil water at three different soil depths, five drip water sites and environmental parameters in Remi cave, Western Hunan Province, Central China, from December 2020 to January 2024. During the monitoring period, due to differences in geological structure and ventilation effect at different locations within the cave, cave air temperature and relative humidity gradually remained constant from the cave entrance to the deep parts of the cave. On intra-annual timescales, precipitation δ18Op were depleted in the wet season and enriched in the dry season, which were mainly controlled by changes in moisture sources, upstream convective activity, and rainout effects. With the increasing thickness of the soil layer above the cave, soil water δ18Osoil gradually became negative and leveled off, possibly because shallow soil water responded sensitively to local year-round precipitation, accompanied by surface evaporation. While, deep soil water with more negative δ18O, may be mainly replenished by heavy precipitation during the wet season, but the effect of water retained in the soil from preceding years couldn’t be excluded and would be needed to verify by conducting more monitoring studies on the variation of δ18Osoil covering the long period. The mean δ18O values of drip water at sites D1 and D2 near the cave entrance were heavier than that of shallow soil water and precipitation, possibly due to evaporation from the thin overlying soil layer, together with ventilation effect. There were seasonal variations of δ18Od values at site D5 in the deep parts of the cave, which may be associated with the seasonal variation of drip rate at this site. Due to the smoothing effect of soil layer and epikarst zone, there were no seasonality in δ18Od values at sites D3 and D4, in the middle and deep parts of the cave. The mean δ18Od at these two sites were lighter than amount-weighted annual mean δ18Op, and close to the deep δ18Osoil and the wet-season amount-weighted mean δ18Op values. This suggests that the thick soil layer overlying the cave raises the precipitation threshold, causing these sites to be mainly recharged by heavy rainfall in the wet season. Therefore, the δ18O of stalagmites growing under these drip sites may mainly inherit the wet-season δ18Op signal. The short monitoring period of this study (three years) and the lack of modern calcite δ18O data, mean that caution is need in interpreting stalagmite δ18O on a timescale longer than that of this study.

Seasonal to decadal variations of precipitation oxygen isotopes in northern China linked to the moisture source

A precise characterization of moisture source and transport dynamics over the inland margins of monsoonal China is crucial for understanding the climatic significance of precipitation oxygen isotope (δ18Op) variability preserved in the regional proxy archives. Here, we use a general circulation model with an embedded water-tagging module to quantify the role of moisture dynamics on the seasonal to decadal variations of δ18Op in northern China. Our data indicate that during the non-monsoon season, the δ18Op variability is dominated by the temperature effect. Conversely, in the summer monsoon season, the moisture contributions from the low-latitude land areas (LLA), the Pacific Ocean (PO), and the North Indian Ocean (NIO) override the temperature effect and influence the summer δ18Op. Intensified upstream convection along the NIO moisture transport pathway results in a more negative summer δ18Op compared to moisture transported from the PO and LLA regions. Our analysis shows a decadal shift in summer δ18Op around the mid-1980s, marking changes in the relative contribution of oceanic moisture from PO and NIO in response to changes in the atmospheric circulation patterns influenced by the Pacific Decadal Oscillation. We suggest that such decadal-scale δ18Op variability can be recorded in the natural archives from the region, which can provide valuable insights into understanding past climate variability.

Precipitation Oxygen Isotope Changes Over East Asia Driven by Sea Surface Conditions During the Last Glacial Maximum

AbstractThe seasonal changes in East Asian monsoon precipitation during the Last Glacial Maximum (LGM, 23,000–19,000 years B.P.) and its isotopic expression remain ambiguous. This study investigates changes in the seasonal precipitation δ18O (δ18Op) over East Asia during the LGM relative to the preindustrial (PI) and the underlying mechanisms using an isotope‐enabled atmospheric general circulation model. We show more depleted δ18Op in summer and a meridional tripolar δ18Op pattern in winter during the LGM compared to the PI. The depletion of summer δ18Op resulted from stronger upstream convective rainout due to the intensification of the Intertropical Convergence Zone. In contrast, the mechanisms for winter δ18Op changes were more complicated. With a series of sensitivity tests, we demonstrate that sea surface temperature controlled δ18Op changes across the whole of East Asia in summer and in the southern part of East Asia in winter. The depletion of winter δ18Op in central China arose largely from the suppression of droplet evaporation due to higher snow fraction. Our work provides important insights into the aspect of seasonal isotope changes during the LGM and may help facilitate an improved level of paleoclimatic interpretation of speleothem δ18O records from East Asia.

Estimating non-productive water loss in irrigated farmland in arid oasis regions: Based on stable isotope data

In arid oasis regions, water resources are severely scarce, with agricultural water usage far exceeding that of more humid areas. As a result, assessing non-productive water losses in farmland becomes crucial for estimating the water requirements reliant on irrigation for oasis cultivation. From April 2018 to October 2021, we established an observation system in the Minqin Oasis farmland. By utilizing hydrogen and oxygen isotopes in precipitation, soil water, and maize stem xylem water, we quantified the non-productive water loss (FE) and soil water infiltration rate (fe) in maize fields. Our findings indicate: (1) The average non-productive losses from rainfall and irrigation in arid maize fields were 39 %, with peak losses reaching 58 %; (2) Non-productive losses due to evapotranspiration were mainly observed in June and July, while losses from infiltration predominantly occurred in April-May and August-September; (3) Crop evapotranspiration capacity emerged as a significant factor influencing evaporation losses, while individual irrigation amounts and rainfall determined soil infiltration losses. We believe that judiciously managing irrigation volume and adjusting irrigation strategies in arid farmlands could unlock substantial potential for conserving water resources.

Compositions of hydrogen and oxygen isotopes of precipitation in Xiamen, southeast China coast: Seasonal variations, synoptic processes, and typhoons impact

AbstractIn this study, the δ2H and δ18O values of 162 precipitation samples (including 33 typhoon‐related samples), collected in Xiamen, southeast China coast, during June 2018 to August 2019, were investigated and analysed. The findings indicate an obvious seasonal variation in the δ2H and δ18O, primarily influenced by the East Asia Monsoon system with notable impact from typhoon occurrences during summer months. The synoptic time‐series variation of δ2H and δ18O exhibits greater complexity: three distinct types of isotopic variations were observed, indicating a clear influence from re‐evaporation processes and continuing equilibrium fractionation during condensation. The variation patterns of δ2H and δ18O were dominated by the local meteorological parameters that govern the re‐evaporation, whereas the overall isotopic composition of precipitation was primarily regulated by the moisture sources. The unique atmospheric structure and dynamic processes of typhoons led to a three‐stage variation of δ2H and δ18O in precipitation as the distance between the typhoon's centre and the study area changed. The consistent configuration of typhoon structure prompts analogous staged changes in different typhoon‐related precipitation. The trajectory of moisture source for typhoon‐related precipitation demonstrates a clear spiral structure (excluding typhoon Yutu), revealing notable impacts from typhoon events.

Quantitative relative humidity reconstruction combining tree-ring with ice core oxygen isotope records

As one of the driest regions in the Asia, the ecological conditions in Northwest China are very fragile. Although relative humidity (RH) plays a vital role in the environment, the lack of long-term RH records hinders the development of reliable scenarios for future extreme environmental conditions in this region. We developed a new method for quantitative regional RH reconstruction; in this method, the signals of precipitation oxygen isotope ratios (δ18O) and temperature in the tree-ring δ18O series are removed to extract the RH signal from the tree-ring δ18O records to the greatest extent. We then combined published millennium tree-ring δ18O, ice core δ18O, and paleo-temperature data to reconstruct a new millennium-long RH record around Delingha, Qinghai, China, on the edge of the northeastern Tibetan Plateau (TP). The reconstructed RH was closely related to both temperature and rainfall, and revealed cycles of approximately 35, 85, 130–160 and 200 years, which are associated with solar insolation variations, Pacific decadal oscillation, and the Atlantic multidecadal variability. With continuous global warming, RH may decrease as the contribution of the temperature increase becomes larger than that of the precipitation over the northeastern TP. This study provides a basis for a new method of RH reconstruction based on different paleoclimate archives.

Spatial and Seasonal Isotope Variability in Precipitation across China: Monthly Isoscapes Based on Regionalized Fuzzy Clustering

AbstractThe spatial patterns of stable hydrogen and oxygen isotopes in precipitation (precipitation isoscapes) provide a geographic perspective to understand the atmospheric processes in modern environment and paleoclimate records. Here we compiled stable isotope data in modern precipitation at 223 sites across China and 48 in surrounding countries, and used regionalized fuzzy clustering to create monthly precipitation isoscapes for China (C-Isoscape). Based on regressions using spatial and climatic parameters for 12 months, the best-fitting equations were chosen for four climate clusters, and then the four layers were weighted using fuzzy membership. The moisture transportation path, controlled by the westerlies and the monsoon, results in different spatial and seasonal diversity of precipitation isotopes. Based on C-Isoscape, we determined a nationwide meteoric water line asδ2H = 7.4δ18O + 5.5 using least squares regression orδ2H = 8.0δ18O + 10.2 using precipitation weighted reduced major axis regression. Compared with previous global products, the C-Isoscape usually shows precipitation more enriched in18O and2H in summer and more depleted in winter for northwest China, while the C-Isoscape values are more enriched in heavy isotopes in most months for southwest China. The new monthly precipitation isoscapes provide an accurate and high-resolution mapping for Chinese precipitation isotopes, allowing for future intra-annual atmospheric process diagnostics using stable hydrogen and oxygen isotope in precipitation in the region.

How is the El Niño–Southern Oscillation signal recorded by tree‐ring oxygen isotopes in southeastern China?

AbstractPrevious studies universally found that tree‐ring oxygen isotope (δ18OTR) in southeastern China (SEC) significantly recorded the El Niño–Southern Oscillation (ENSO) signal. However, the correlation between the climate in SEC and ENSO is insignificant, so the local climatic response of SEC δ18OTR fails to explain the significant positive correlations between these δ18OTR records and ENSO. In this study, based on four δ18OTR series from SEC, meteorological data, simulated precipitation oxygen isotope (δ18OP) data, and a moisture uptake atlas deduced from Lagrangian backward trajectory experiments, a conceptual model was established to explain how the ENSO signal is recorded by SEC δ18OTR. During the El Niño decaying years, the Northwest Pacific (NWP) convective activity weakens; the convective weakening areas coincide with the main moisture sources for SEC, which enriches 18O in moisture that is transported to SEC, resulting in positive anomalies of δ18OP in SEC; finally, the ENSO‐modulated δ18OP signal is inherited by SEC δ18OTR. The opposite situations occur in the La Niña events. It was also indicated that the change in the moisture contribution percentage from different sources may not be a primary factor that connects SEC δ18OTR with ENSO. These findings contribute to understanding climatic signals represented by δ18OTR and δ18OP in the East Asian monsoon region.

Stable Isotopes of Precipitation in the Eastern Tarim River Basin and Water Vapor Sources

The in-situ monitoring of stable hydrogen and oxygen isotopes (δ18O and δ2H) in precipitation is helpful to understand the processes of water phase change, mixing, and transportation. Due to the arid climate in the eastern Tarim River basin, water resources are the key factor affecting the regional sustainable development. However, the understanding of stable hydrogen and oxygen isotopes in precipitation is still limited for this region. Based on the isotope data of 103 precipitation samples collected at four stations in the eastern Tarim River basin from June 2019 to September 2020, the spatial and temporal characteristics of stable hydrogen and oxygen isotopes in precipitation were analyzed, and the connections between stable isotopes and moisture sources were discussed. The findings provide a reference for the application of environmental isotope tracers in arid areas. The results show that, ① the four sampling stations generally presented an increasing trend in precipitation stable isotopic values from north to south, and the isotopic values were higher in summer and lower in winter. The d-excess value in the study region was smaller than the national average, and the slope of the local meteoric water line exhibited a significant arid characteristic. ② There was a positive correlation between precipitation stable isotopes and air temperature in the study region, whereas a weak negative relationship was seen between d-excess and air temperature. The negative correlation occurred between δ18O and relative humidity, and the d-excess value exhibited a positive correlation with relative humidity. ③ The backward trajectory showed that the eastern Tarim River basin is mainly controlled by the westerlies paths. The proportion of air mass that comes from the middle and short distance is relatively large. The concentration weighted trajectory method showed that the farther from the precipitation sampling site, the more stable the d-excess value was. The closer to the sampling site, the more frequently the concentration changed, indicating that the d-excess value was greatly affected by the local water vapor recycling.

The Significance of Hydrogen and Oxygen Stable Isotopes in the Water Vapor Source in Dingxi Area

Deuterium excess and stable oxygen isotopes in precipitation have been widely applied to trace the source of water vapor. In this study, hydrogen and oxygen isotope analyses of samples were collected on seven sampling stations in Dingxi area from April 2019 to April 2020. The seasonal variation of hydrogen and oxygen stable isotopes as well as the d-excess indicate that the source of water vapor in Dingxi area is mostly from a single source. However, there are different sources of water vapor in the summer. Meanwhile, water vapor sources were analyzed using the Lagrange algorithm, indicating two different principal water vapor sources for precipitation in the area: some locally recycled water vapor in summer and autumn, and most water vapor from the westerly belt. Further studies using the PSCF and CWT analysis methods show that the locally recycled water vapor contributes more to its precipitation in the northwest of Dingxi area.

Spatial and temporal variations of hydrogen and oxygen isotopes and sources of water vapour indicated from satellite precipitation products along the transection of 38°north latitude in North China

The variations of hydrogen and oxygen isotopes in rainfall are critical for understanding the sources of rainfall and the influence of local evaporation. Satellite precipitation products with high time resolution (for instance 1 h) could be helpful for testifying the accuracy of water sources, as it can clearly illustrate the route of cloud movement. In this study, we analyzed the composition of hydrogen and oxygen isotopes in different rainfall events in three stations from 2015 to 2018 along the transection of 38° N latitude from Taihang Mountains to the coastal region in North China, Taihang Mountain Station (mountainous area), Luancheng Station (pre-mountain plain) and Nanpi Station (coastal low plain). By selecting typical rainfall events, water vapor sources and its influence rainfall on hydrogen and oxygen isotopes were analyzed with hourly available CMORPH satellite precipitation products. Results showed that the hydrogen and oxygen isotopes of precipitation were cha-racterized by enrichment in the rainy season and depletion in the dry season. The hydrogen and oxygen isotopes in the rainy season showed a tendency of depletion with the increases of precipitation. The slope and intercept of the fitted relationship of hydrogen and oxygen isotopes in the piedmont region of the mountains were the lowest, indicating that precipitation in the piedmont plain was significantly affected by secondary evaporation fractionation. The effect of evaporation resulted in the largest variations of isotope ratio in the dry year. In the mountainous station, due to the heavy rainfall, large isotopic variation was found in rich precipitation year. Based on the route analysis of sate-llite precipitation products, dominant water vapor in the region was inland and northwest-oriented water vapor, while water vapor in the rainy season was from southwest and from the Pacific Ocean. There was a significant difference in the hydrogen and oxygen isotopes of precipitation in the mountainous and plain stations in 2016, owing to water vapor sources and effects of rainfall for the mountainous and evaporation for plain. The results from HYSPLIT model showed that during the rainstorm on 19th July in 2016, water vapor at the mountainous station was mainly from the southwest, while that in the coastal plain was a mixture of southwest and southeast sources. Overall, our results showed that spatial and temporal variations of hydrogen and oxygen isotopes were controlled by both water sources and evaporation processes along the transection of 38° north latitude in North China.

Temporal variations and evaporation control effect of the stable isotope composition of precipitation in the subtropical monsoon climate region, Southwest China

Stable hydrogen and oxygen isotopes in precipitation, which are sensitive to climate change and the water cycle, are widely used as natural tracers to investigate hydrological processes and paleoclimate reconstruction. High resolution event-based precipitation sampling was conducted in Guilin, a subtropical monsoon climate region in Southwest China, from 2010 to 2016 to identify the temporal variability of stable isotopes of precipitation and its dominant meteorological factors. The results showed that the stable isotopes of precipitation exhibited significant seasonal variability, with lower values in the wet season and higher values in the dry season, reflecting the changes in the character of precipitation in response to seasonal variability of the moisture sources and atmospheric dynamics. δ18O values were significantly negatively correlated with temperature and potential evapotranspiration (ET0) on the daily and monthly timescales; however, there was no significant correlation between monthly δ18O and the amount of rainfall. Multivariate regression analysis showed that when temperature, precipitation amount and ET0 were considered, 39% of the variability of the monthly oxygen isotope composition of precipitation was explained. Monthly mean temperature had a higher covariation with precipitation δ18O, indicating that the variations of precipitation isotope were more dependent on temperature, but not substantially dependent on the amount effect of rainfall. Howerver, the main influence of meteorological factors on the isotopic variations of precipitation varied seasonally. Temperature strongly influenced the isotopic composition of precipitation in summer, while the amount effect was prominent due to the enhanced convective activity characterized by more depleted δ18O values. Although evapotranspiration is a minor contributor of precipitation isotope variability, the impact of evapotranspiration on the enrichment of precipitation isotopes in autumn is a substantial control and should be considered, which makes a major contribution to compensate for the depletion in heavy isotopes of rainfall. The non-linear relationship between d-excess and ET0 was attributed to the variable contribution of large-scale convective moisture and local evaporation, as well as water vapor transfer processes. The response of precipitation stable isotopes to convective events was characterized by distinct stage patterns, associated with the water vapor sources and physical processes during rainout. The significant depletion of precipitation δ18O values during convective events was not due to the ‘amount effect’, but due to large-scale convection activity. These findings provide further insight into intraevent-scale isotopic variations associated with organized convection and their key influencing factors, which ultimately improves our interpretation of the paleoclimate records in subtropical monsoon regions.

Local and Regional Modes of Hydroclimatic Change Expressed in Modern Multidecadal Precipitation Oxygen Isotope Trends

AbstractStable isotope ratios of precipitation trace mechanisms of hydroclimatic change in the modern and paleoclimate record. Patterns and drivers of isotopic change at multidecadal timescales have remained unclear, however, due to limitations in the observational record. Here, we use a 65‐year global data compilation to estimate solstial season δ18Op trends. Spatially organized regions of change suggest divergent controls, and we propose that changes in atmospheric water balance dominate trends in moisture‐limited areas, whereas changes in upwind source region conditions drive trends where atmospheric water flux is large relative to precipitation. Positive trends on windward coasts suggest the latter effect, whereas we attribute the dipole patterns in trends over North America and Europe and decreasing trends in southern Australia during boreal winter to the former. Simulations from the isotope‐enabled Community Atmospheric Model match predictions for water balance, implying that the model may underrepresent the effects of changing vapor source conditions.

Understanding Tropical Convection Through Triple Oxygen Isotopes of Precipitation From the Maritime Continent

AbstractMonthly precipitation samples from Singapore were collected between 2013 and 2019 for stable isotope analysis to further our understanding of the drivers of tropical precipitation isotopes, in particular, 17O‐excess. δ18O ranges from –11.34‰ to –2.34‰, with a low correlation to rainfall (r = –0.31, p = 0.014), suggesting a weak amount effect. d‐excess is relatively consistent and has an average value of 10.89‰ ± 3.45‰. Compared to high‐latitude regions, 17O‐excess in our samples generally falls in a narrower range from 2 to 47 per meg with an average of 21 ± 11 per meg. Moreover, 17O‐excess shows strong periodic variability; spectral analysis reveals 3‐month, 6‐month, and 2.7‐year periodicities, likely corresponding to intraseasonal oscillations, monsoons, and the El Niño–Southern Oscillation (ENSO), respectively. In contrast, d‐excess shows no clear periodicities. Although spectral analysis only identifies 6‐month periodicity in the δ18O time series, δ18O tracks the Nino3.4 sea surface temperature variability; the average δ18O value (–5.2‰) is higher during El Niño years than ENSO neutral years (–7.6‰). Therefore, regional convection associated with monsoons and ENSO has different impacts on δ18O, d‐excess, and 17O‐excess. 17O‐excess and d‐excess are anticorrelated and do not relate to the relative humidity in moisture source regions. Extremely low humidity and drought conditions in moisture source regions would be required to account for high 17O‐excess. Processes during transport and precipitation likely modify these two parameters, especially 17O‐excess, which no longer record humidity conditions of moisture source regions. Our findings will be useful for further modeling studies to identify physical processes during convection that alter d‐excess and 17O‐excess.

Isoscape of δ18O in Precipitation of the Qinghai-Tibet Plateau: Assessment and Improvement

The spatial distribution of stable water isotopes (also known as an isoscape) in precipitation has drawn increasing attention during the recent years. In this study, based on the observations at 32 stations, we assessed two widely applied global isoscape products (Regionalized Cluster-based Water Isotope Prediction (RCWIP) and Online Isotopes in Precipitation Calculator (OIPC)) at the Qinghai-Tibet Plateau (QTP) and then established an improved isoscape of oxygen isotopes in precipitation on a monthly basis using a regionalized fuzzy cluster method. Two fuzzy clusters can be determined, which is consistent using three meteorological data. The monthly isoscapes show the seasonal movement of high and low isotopic value regions across the QTP and reveal the influences of monsoon and westerly moisture. According to the cross validation, the δ18O in precipitation in the new monthly isoscapes for the QTP we propose performs better compared to the existing global products. To create a regional isoscape in many other regions, the regionalized fuzzy cluster method can be considered especially for regions with complex controlling regimes of precipitation isotopes.

Characteristics of Stable Isotopes and Moisture Sources of Two Typical Precipitation Events in Lanzhou City

To better understand the isotope variations on a short time scale, this study focused on a long-term rainfall event with light precipitation (June 26-27) and a short-term one with heavy precipitation (July 28) in Lanzhou City in the summer of 2019. Combined with HYSPLIT model, samples collected during a continuous precipitation event every 10 min and 30 min were analyzed to explore the characteristics and mechanism of stable hydrogen and oxygen isotopes in precipitation. The results indicate that the effect of sub-cloud secondary evaporation makes the slope of the sequential meteoric water line (SMWL) smaller at the beginning of the rainfall event. Most of the continuous sampling points are distributed above the global meteoric water line (GMWL) and local meteoric water line (LMWL). Moreover, the deuterium excess is larger than the local average annual deuterium (8.13), indicating that the samples have experienced moisture recycling to a certain extent. During two consecutive days (June 26-27) of rainfall, the variations in oxygen isotope δ18O did not follow the effect of precipitation amount; the precipitation δ18O of the first day was "L" shaped, and it fluctuated the next day. On July 28, δ18O steadily decreased, and the range of δ18O exceeded 9‰. On June 26, the moisture transport path was short at the height of 500 m and on June 27 local evaporation was the main pathway. On July 28, with a relatively stable air mass, the moisture source of the entire precipitation event did not change significantly, neither did the isotope value. Therefore, for a single precipitation event on a short time scale, the difference in moisture sources is one of the reasons for isotope variations.

A calibration of cellulose isotopes in modern prostrate Nothofagus and its application to fossil material from Antarctica

Carbon and oxygen isotopes (δ13C and δ18O) in tree rings are widely used to reconstruct palaeoclimate variables such as temperature during the Holocene (12 thousand years ago - present), and are used increasingly in deeper time. However, their use is largely restricted to arboreal trees, which excludes potentially important data from prostrate trees and shrubs, which grow in high latitude and altitude end-member environments. Here, we calibrate the use of δ13C and δ18O as climatic archives in two modern species of southern beech (Nothofagus) from Tierra del Fuego, Chile, at the southern limit of their current range. We show that prostrate trees are potentially suitable archives for recording climatological means over longer periods (on the order of decades), which opens up these important environments for tree ring isotope analysis. We then apply our new understanding to a remarkable late Neogene (17–2.5 Ma) fossil Nothofagus assemblage from the Transantarctic Mountains, Antarctica, representative of a prostrate tundra shrub growing during a period of significant ice sheet retreat. The δ13C of the fossil cellulose was found to be ~4‰ enriched relative to that of the modern tress. This is likely to be due to a combination of a more positive δ13C of contemporaneous atmospheric CO2 and enhanced water use efficiency at the fossil site. Using the cellulose-δ18O in the fossil wood, we are able to reconstruct precipitation oxygen isotopes over the Antarctic interior for the first time for this time period. The results show that δ18Oprecip over Antarctica was −16.0 ± 4.2‰, around 12‰ enriched relative to today, suggesting changes in the hydrological cycle linked to warmer temperatures and a smaller ice sheet.

Long-term trend of precipitation stable isotopic compositions under global warming conditions

Based on observation data from the Global Network of Isotopes in Precipitation, the temporal variations of precipitation oxygen isotope compositions (δ18O) are estimated globally, by using the methods of non-parametric Mann–Kendall test and Sen’s slope estimator. The results show statistically significant long-term δ18O increasing and decreasing at about two thirds and one third sites, respectively. For most temperature effect dominated sites, the δ18O changes can be attributed to the changes of surface air temperature. Therefore, the δ18O is predicted to rise with global warming for these sites, which has great implications in application of isotopes as traces of hydrology.

Bias correcting isotope-equipped GCMs outputs to build precipitation oxygen isoscape for eastern China

Stable oxygen isotope, as a valuable environmental tracer, can provide unique insights on hydrology and climate research. However, sparse isotopic observations hinder its utilization of interpreting hydrological processes. Eastern China is a typical region where isotopic measurements are limited. Isotope-equipped global climate models (iGCMs) are able to provide detailed isotope information to extend observations in time at a large spatial scale; however, biases between observations and simulations challenge the direct application of iGCMs simulations. Accordingly, this study investigates the potential of bias correcting iGCMs to generate reliable and spatiotemporally continuous isotopic landscape (isoscape) for eastern China. Spatial and temporal correlations between observations and simulations are investigated at a regional scale. Performances of six iGCM simulations and two bias correction methods (BCMs) are compared in this study. Uncertainties for the precipitation oxygen isoscape (POI) are estimated by comparing results from an ensemble mean of six iGCM simulations and two BCMs, as well as using a variance decomposition method. The POI for eastern China is generated by averaging the results from the six iGCM simulations corrected by the two BCMs. Results show that iGCM simulations are strongly correlated to observations at a given temporal and spatial scale. Model simulations generally underestimate the precipitation oxygen isotope. The two BCMs exhibit the ability of reducing biases in the simulated values. The iGCMs seem to contribute more uncertainty to mean δ18Op estimates than the two BCMs used in this study, followed by the interaction between iGCMs and BCMs, with the least in BCMs. The POI built by a multi-iGCM and multi-BCM approach adequately preserves the spatiotemporal pattern of isotopic measurements. Overall, bias correction is imperative and effective in building high resolution POI by making of spatiotemporally coherent iGCMs simulations.
