Out-of-time-ordered correlators in the IP matrix model

We study the out-of-time-ordered correlators (OTOCs) in the IP matrix model [1]. It was shown in [2] that OTOCs do not grow when the adjoint is massless. We generalize the analysis of OTOCs to general nonzero masses m > 0 for the adjoint, where we give a new prescription for analytic continuation in time such that we can evaluate OTOCs numerically using the retarded Green function. Despite the fact that the behaviors of the two-point functions, spectral density, and the Krylov complexity change drastically depending on whether the adjoint is massless or not, in the parameter ranges we study, we do not see the exponential growth of OTOCs for the massive adjoint cases. We end with a discussion of the comparison of this model with the SYK model and possible modification of the model.

Information scrambling -- a quantum thermodynamic perspective

Abstract Recent advances in quantum information science have shed light on the intricate dynamics of quantum many-body systems, for which quantum information scrambling is a perfect example. Motivated by considerations of the thermodynamics of quantum information, this perspective aims at synthesizing key findings from several pivotal studies, exploring various aspects of quantum scrambling. We consider quantifiers such as the Out-of-Time-Ordered Correlator (OTOC), the quantum Mutual Information, and the Tripartite Mutual Information (TMI), their connections to thermodynamics, and their role in understanding chaotic versus integrable quantum systems. Focusing on representative examples, we cover a range of topics, including the thermodynamics of quantum information scrambling, and the scrambling dynamics in quantum gravity models such as the Sachdev-Ye-Kitaev (SYK) model. By examining these diverse approaches, we highlight the multifaceted nature of quantum information scrambling and its significance in understanding the fundamental aspects of quantum many-body dynamics at the intersection of quantum mechanics and thermodynamics.

Quantum information scrambling in two-dimensional Bose-Hubbard lattices.

It is a well-understood fact that the transport of excitations throughout a lattice is intimately governed by the underlying structures. Hence, it is only natural to recognize that the dispersion of information also has to depend on the lattice geometry. In the present work, we demonstrate that two-dimensional lattices described by the Bose-Hubbard model exhibit information scrambling for systems as little as two hexagons. However, we also find that the out-of-time-ordered correlator (OTOC) shows the exponential decay characteristic for quantum chaos only for a judicious choice of local observables. More generally, the OTOC is better described by Gaussian-exponential convolutions, which alludes to the close similarity of information scrambling and decoherence theory.

Quadratic Growth of Out-of-Time-Ordered Correlators in Quantum Kicked Rotor Model.

We investigate both theoretically and numerically the dynamics of out-of-time-ordered correlators (OTOCs) in quantum resonance conditions for a kicked rotor model. We employ various operators to construct OTOCs in order to thoroughly quantify their commutation relation at different times, therefore unveiling the process of quantum scrambling. With the help of quantum resonance condition, we have deduced the exact expressions of quantum states during both forward evolution and time reversal, which enables us to establish the laws governing OTOCs' time dependence. We find interestingly that the OTOCs of different types increase in a quadratic function of time, breaking the freezing of quantum scrambling induced by the dynamical localization under non-resonance condition. The underlying mechanism is discovered, and the possible applications in quantum entanglement are discussed.

Quantum circuits for measuring weak values, Kirkwood–Dirac quasiprobability distributions, and state spectra

Weak values and Kirkwood–Dirac (KD) quasiprobability distributions have been independently associated with both foundational issues in quantum theory and advantages in quantum metrology. We propose simple quantum circuits to measure weak values, KD distributions, and spectra of density matrices without the need for post-selection. This is achieved by measuring unitary-invariant, relational properties of quantum states, which are functions of Bargmann invariants, the concept that underpins our unified perspective. Our circuits also enable experimental implementation of various functions of KD distributions, such as out-of-time-ordered correlators and the quantum Fisher information in post-selected parameter estimation, among others. An upshot is a unified view of nonclassicality in all those tasks. In particular, we discuss how negativity and imaginarity of Bargmann invariants relate to set coherence.

An effective field theory for non-maximal quantum chaos

In non-maximally quantum chaotic systems, the exponential behavior of out-of-time-ordered correlators (OTOCs) results from summing over exchanges of an infinite tower of higher “spin” operators. We construct an effective field theory (EFT) to capture these exchanges in (0 + 1) dimensions. The EFT generalizes the one for maximally chaotic systems, and reduces to it in the limit of maximal chaos. The theory predicts the general structure of OTOCs both at leading order in the 1/N expansion (N is the number of degrees of freedom), and after resuming over an infinite number of higher order 1/N corrections. These general results agree with those previously explicitly obtained in specific models. We also show that the general structure of the EFT can be extracted from the large q SYK model.

Out-of-time-ordered correlator in the one-dimensional Kuramoto-Sivashinsky and Kardar-Parisi-Zhang equations.

The out-of-time-ordered correlator (OTOC) has emerged as an interesting object in both classical and quantum systems for probing the spatial spread and temporal growth of initially local perturbations in spatially extended chaotic systems. Here, we study the (classical) OTOC and its "light cone" in the nonlinear Kuramoto-Sivashinsky (KS) equation, using extensive numerical simulations. We also show that the linearized KS equationexhibits a qualitatively similar OTOC and light cone, which can be understood via a saddle-point analysis of the linearly unstable modes. Given the deep connection between the KS (deterministic) and the Kardar-Parisi-Zhang (KPZ, which is stochastic) equations, we also explore the OTOC in the KPZ equation. While our numerical results in the KS case are expected to hold in the continuum limit, for the KPZ case it is valid in a discretized version of the KPZ equation. More broadly, our work unravels the intrinsic interplay between noise/instability, nonlinearity, and dissipation in partial differential equations(deterministic or stochastic) through the lens of OTOC.

Quantum chaos in the Dicke model and its variants

Recently, the out-of-time-ordered correlator (OTOC) has gained much attention as an indicator of quantum chaos. In the semi-classical limit, its exponential growth rate resembles the classical Lyapunov exponent. The quantum–classical correspondence has been supported for the one-body chaotic systems as well as realistic systems with interactions, as in the Dicke model, a model of multi-two-level atoms and cavity field interactions. To this end, we calculate the OTOC for different variations of the Dicke model in an open quantum system setting. The connection between the superradiant phase transition of the Dicke model and the OTOC is studied. Further, we establish a relation between the OTOC and the second-order coherence function. This becomes important for the experimental studies of the OTOC and quantum chaos in the models of quantum optics.

Slow relaxation of out-of-time-ordered correlators in interacting integrable and nonintegrable spin- 12 XYZ chains

Out-of-time-ordered correlators (OTOCs) help characterize the scrambling of quantum information and are usually studied in the context of nonintegrable systems. In this work, we compare the relaxation dynamics of OTOCs in interacting integrable and nonintegrable spin-$\frac{1}{2}$ XYZ chains in regimes without a classical counterpart. In both kinds of chains, using the presence of symmetries such as $U(1)$ and supersymmetry, we consider regimes in which the OTOC operators overlap or not with the Hamiltonian. We show that the relaxation of the OTOCs is slow (fast) when there is (there is not) an overlap, independently of whether the chain is integrable or nonintegrable. When slow, we show that the OTOC dynamics follows closely that of the two-point correlators. We study the dynamics of OTOCs using numerical calculations, and gain analytical insights from the properties of the diagonal and of the off-diagonal matrix elements of the corresponding local operators in the energy eigenbasis.

Classical approach to equilibrium of out-of-time ordered correlators in mixed systems.

The out-of-time ordered correlator (OTOC) is a measure of scrambling of quantum information. Scrambling is intuitively considered to be a significant feature of chaotic systems, and thus, the OTOC is widely used as a measure of chaos. For short times exponential growth is related to the classical Lyapunov exponent, sometimes known as the butterfly effect. At long times the OTOC attains an average equilibrium value with possible oscillations. For fully chaotic systems the approach to the asymptotic regime is exponential, with a rate given by the classical Ruelle-Pollicott resonances. In this work, we extend this notion to the more generic case of systems with mixed dynamics, in particular using the standard map, and we are able to show that the relaxation to equilibrium of the OTOC is governed by generalized classical resonances.

Witnessing quantum chaos using observational entropy.

We study observation entropy (OE) for the quantum kicked top model, whose classical counterpart possesses different phases: regular, mixed, or chaotic, depending on the strength of the kicking parameter. We show that OE grows logarithmically with coarse-graining length beyond a critical value in the regular phase, while OE growth is much faster in the chaotic regime. In the dynamics, we demonstrate that the short-time growth rate of OE acts as a measure of the chaoticity in the system, and we compare our results with out-of-time-ordered correlators (OTOC). Moreover, we show that in the deep quantum regime, the results obtained from OE are much more robust compared to OTOC results. Finally, we also investigate the long-time behavior of OE to distinguish between saddle-point scrambling and true chaos, where the former shows large persistent fluctuations compared to the latter.

Charge transport, information scrambling and quantum operator-coherence in a many-body system with U(1) symmetry

In this work, we derive an exact hydrodynamical description for the coupled, charge and operator dynamics, in a quantum many-body system with U(1) symmetry. Using an emergent symmetry in the complex Brownian SYK model with charge conservation, we map the operator dynamics in the model to the imaginary-time dynamics of an SU(4) spin-chain. We utilize the emergent SU(4) description to demonstrate that the U(1) symmetry causes quantum-coherence to persist even after disorder-averaging, in sharp contrast to models without symmetries. In line with this property, we write down a ‘restricted’ Fokker-Planck equation for the out-of-time ordered correlator (OTOC) in the large-N limit, which permits a classical probability description strictly in the incoherent sector of the global operator-space. We then exploit this feature to describe the OTOC in terms of a Fisher-Kolmogorov-Petrovsky-Piskun (FKPP)-equation which couples the operator with the charge and is valid at all time-scales and for arbitrary charge-density profiles. The coupled equations obtained belong to a class of models also used to describe the population dynamics of bacteria embedded in a diffusive media. We simulate them to explore operator-dynamics in a background of non-uniform charge configuration, which reveals that the charge transport can strongly affect dynamics of operators, including those that have no overlap with the charge.

Signatures of the interplay between chaos and local criticality on the dynamics of scrambling in many-body systems.

Fast scrambling, quantified by the exponential initial growth of out-of-time-ordered correlators (OTOCs), is the ability to efficiently spread quantum correlations among the degrees of freedom of interacting systems and constitutes a characteristic signature of local unstable dynamics. As such, it may equally manifest both in systems displaying chaos or in integrable systems around criticality. Here we go beyond these extreme regimes with an exhaustive study of the interplay between local criticality and chaos right at the intricate phase-space region where the integrability-chaos transition first appears. We address systems with a well-defined classical (mean-field) limit, as coupled large spins and Bose-Hubbard chains, thus allowing for semiclassical analysis. Our aim is to investigate the dependence of the exponential growth of the OTOCs, defining the quantum Lyapunov exponent λ_{q} on quantities derived from the classical system with mixed phase space, specifically the local stability exponent of a fixed point λ_{loc} as well as the maximal Lyapunov exponent λ_{L} of the chaotic region around it. By extensive numerical simulations covering a wide range of parameters we give support to a conjectured linear dependence 2λ_{q}=aλ_{L}+bλ_{loc}, providing a simple route to characterize scrambling at the border between chaos and integrability.

Scrambling of algebras in open quantum systems

Many quantitative approaches to the dynamical scrambling of information in quantum systems involve the study of out-of-time-ordered correlators (OTOCs). In this paper, we introduce an algebraic OTOC ($\mathcal{A}$-OTOC) that allows us to study information scrambling of generalized quantum subsystems under quantum channels. For closed quantum systems, this algebraic framework was recently employed to unify quantum information-theoretic notions of operator entanglement, coherence-generating power, and Loschmidt echo. The main focus of this work is to provide a natural generalization of these techniques to open quantum systems. We first show that, for unitary dynamics, the $\mathcal{A}$-OTOC quantifies a generalized notion of information scrambling, namely between a subalgebra of observables and its commutant. For open quantum systems, on the other hand, we find a competition between the global environmental decoherence and the local scrambling of information. We illustrate this interplay by analytically studying various illustrative examples of algebras and quantum channels. To complement our analytical results, we perform numerical simulations of two paradigmatic systems: the PXP model and the Heisenberg XXX model, under dephasing. Our numerical results reveal connections with many-body scars and the stability of decoherence-free subspaces.

Chaos and operator growth in 2d CFT

We study the out-of-time-ordered correlator (OTOC) in a zero temperature 2d large-c CFT under evolution by a Liouvillian composed of the Virasoro generators. A bound was conjectured in [1] on the growth of the OTOC set by the Krylov complexity which is a measure of operator growth. The latter grows as an exponential of time with exponent 2α, which sets an upper bound on the Lyapunov exponent, ΛL≤ 2α. We find that for a two dimensional zero temperature CFT, the OTOC decays exponentially with a Lyapunov exponent which saturates this bound. We show that these Virasoro generators form the modular Hamiltonian of the CFT with half space traced out. Therefore, evolution by this modular Hamiltonian gives rise to thermal dynamics in a zero temperature CFT. Leveraging the thermal dynamics of the system, we derive this bound in a zero temperature CFT using the analyticity and boundedness properties of the OTOC.

Robustness of Kardar-Parisi-Zhang scaling in a classical integrable spin chain with broken integrability

Recent investigations have observed superdiffusion in integrable classical and quantum spin chains. An intriguing connection between these spin chains and Kardar-Parisi-Zhang (KPZ) universality class has emerged. Theoretical developments (e.g. generalized hydrodynamics) have highlighted the role of integrability as well as spin-symmetry in KPZ behaviour. However understanding their precise role on superdiffusive transport still remains a challenging task. The widely used quantum spin chain platform comes with severe numerical limitations. To circumvent this barrier, we focus on a classical integrable spin chain which was shown to have deep analogy with the quantum spin-$\frac{1}{2}$ Heisenberg chain. Remarkably, we find that KPZ behaviour prevails even when one considers integrability-breaking but spin-symmetry preserving terms, strongly indicating that spin-symmetry plays a central role even in the non-perturbative regime. On the other hand, in the non-perturbative regime, we find that energy correlations exhibit clear diffusive behaviour. We also study the classical analog of out-of-time-ordered correlator (OTOC) and Lyapunov exponents. We find significant presence of chaos for the integrability-broken cases even though KPZ behaviour remains robust. The robustness of KPZ behaviour is demonstrated for a wide class of spin-symmetry preserving integrability-breaking terms.

Out-of-time-order correlations and quantum chaos

Quantum Chaos has originally emerged as the field which studies how the properties of classical chaotic systems arise in their quantum counterparts. The growing interest in quantum many-body systems, with no obvious classical meaning has led to consider time-dependent quantities that can help to characterize and redefine Quantum Chaos. This article reviews the prominent role that the out of time ordered correlator (OTOC) plays to achieve such goal.

From CFTs to theories with Bondi-Metzner-Sachs symmetries: Complexity and out-of-time-ordered correlators

We probe the contraction from $2d$ relativistic CFTs to theories with Bondi-Metzner-Sachs (BMS) symmetries, or equivalently Conformal Carroll symmetries, using diagnostics of quantum chaos. Starting from an Ultrarelativistic limit on a relativistic scalar field theory and following through at the quantum level using an oscillator representation of states, one can show the CFT$_2$ vacuum evolves smoothly into a BMS$_3$ vacuum in the form of a squeezed state. Computing circuit complexity of this transmutation using the covariance matrix approach shows clear divergences when the BMS point is hit or equivalently when the target state becomes a boundary state. We also find similar behaviour of the circuit complexity calculated from methods of information geometry. Furthermore, we discuss the hamiltonian evolution of the system and investigate Out-of-time-ordered correlators (OTOCs) and operator growth complexity, both of which turn out to scale polynomially with time at the BMS point.

Quantum chaos, scrambling and operator growth in Toverline{T} deformed SYK models

In this work, we investigate the quantum chaos in various Toverline{T} -deformed SYK models with finite N, including the SYK4, the supersymmetric SYK4, and the SYK2 models. We numerically study the evolution of the spectral form factor (SFF), the out-of-time ordered correlator (OTOC), and the Krylov complexity. We find that the characteristic evolution of the SFF, OTOC and K-complexity of both the SYK4 and SSYK4 models remains unchanged under the deformation, which implies that the properties of quantum chaos is preserved. We also identify a many-body localization behavior in the deformed SYK2 model.

Information scrambling dynamics in a fully controllable quantum simulator

Quantum information scrambling has received tremendous attention owing to its key concept in the fields of quantum chaos and quantum gravity. Here, with exploiting a fully controllable superconducting quantum processor, we study the verified scrambling in a 1D spin chain by an analog superconducting quantum simulator with the signs and values of individual driving and coupling terms fully controllable. By engineering opposite Hamiltonians on two subsystems, we measure the temporal and spatial patterns of out-of-time ordered correlators (OTOC), with the Hamiltonian mismatch and the decoherence extracted quantitatively from the scrambling dynamics, providing a benchmarking tool for probing not only the spatial but the temporal patterns of scrambling dynamics in many-body systems. Our work demonstrates the superconducting system with strong controllability as a powerful quantum simulator.
