The issue of the appearance and classification of Cossack songs or has recently become very significant for the region, which territory during the 15th and 17th centuries were the Cossack's motherland. It’s related to the fact that in 2015 Cossack Songs of Dnipropetrovsk entered to the list of the intangible heritage of UNESCO, as well as it was noted the activity of local governments, directed to raising and reviving the national culture in the region.During the 20th and the beginning of the 21st centuries, the issue of systematic scientific research of the Dnipro rapids zone was not taken under attention, as a result we did not have a methodological basis for a comprehensive analysis of this phenomenon. Among the few works, we should highlight the articles by A. Ivanitsky and A. Tereshchenko, that represent two opposing views on the classification of Cossack songs. A. Ivanitsky presents a more broadly oriented perspective. He proposes to systematize the songs based on the content, that is, the poetic text. The author highlights the stylistic features of the songs of this group, which may be related to lyrical songs in general. A. Tereshchenko studying the Cossack songs focuses exclusively on the melodies. So, the group includes songs of different genres, such as ballads, plangent songs, choruses, romances, etc., which belong to different eras by origin, synthesizing the style of other later genres. In our work, an attempt was made to present the songs of the Cossack theme at the present stage, preserved in the memory of residents of the Dnipropetrovsk region. Among all the songs existing in the region, the Cossack songs occupy a small part. Very often, this is contamination with other genres, such as the Chumak songs, soldier marching songs, ballads, romances and others. In general, it should be noted that the songs of the Cossack theme do not have their own features that distinguish them from other lyrical songs. This thesis permeates the article by A. Tereshchenko and is confirmed in our study.
