SODAS: Smart Open Data as a Service for Improving Interconnectivity and Data Usability

In this study, we proposed Smart Open Data as a Service (SODAS) as a new open data platform based on the international standards Data Catalog Vocabulary (DCAT) and Comprehensive Knowledge Archive Network (CKAN) to facilitate the release and sharing of data. We first analyze the five problems in the legacy CKAN and then draw up corresponding solutions through three core strategies: CKAN expansion, DCATv2 support, and extendable DataMap. We then define four components and nine function blocks of SODAS for each core strategy. As a result, SODAS drives Open Data Portal, Open Data Reference Model, DataMap Publisher, and Analytics and Development Environment (ADE) Provisioning for connecting the defined function blocks. We confirm that each function works correctly through the SODAS Web portal, and then we apply SODAS to actual data distribution sites to prove its efficiency and practical use. SODAS is the first open data platform that provides secure interoperability between heterogeneous platforms based on international standards, and it enables domain-free data management with flexible metadata.

Research of methods for determining the accuracy of metrological measurements

The object of research in this work are individual branches and processes of metrology, namely algorithms and methods of global positioning, analysis and research of individual processes, and their implementation in the software model to analyze their accuracy. The existing problem is that some methods or devices that produce results based on these methods are not accurate enough or their accuracy is affected by a number of factors that worsen the result. During the work the methods and approaches of the global positioning system were analyzed, such as: precise point positioning, relative positioning of GPS, static and fast static GPS-shooting and Stop-and-go shooting. Approaches were also divided into static and kinematic. Among the methods, the method of precise point positioning was chosen, as the most common and used among ordinary GPS users, for more detailed research and analysis of accuracy. Development methods are based on the means of interaction with open GPS services, and C#, ASP.NET Core, Angular framework, and development environment Visual Studio Code and Visual Studio 2022. In order to implement all the necessary functionality, the subject area was analyzed, the methods of determining metrological accuracy in general and within the system of global positioning as a direct object of work were considered. As a result of the work the analysis and modelling of the subject area was carried out, the methods of the global positioning system and the software system for the analysis of the accuracy of one of the GPS methods were investigated. The analysis results provided by the software help to understand the accuracy of the method and the GPS receivers that use it on different devices.

Novel development tool for IEC 61499 based on domain-specific languages

This paper presents an example of a systematic approach based on domain-specific languages to implement Function Blocks Modelling Environment (FBME): an integrated development environment (IDE) for the international standard IEC 61499. The new open development environment for the standard of growing importance in the Industry 4.0 realm would contribute to the broader adoption of open standard-based development practices and facilitate efficient automation software development.

The objective of the development of the mobile application in education inclusion is the transformation of the teacher's discourse in real time, providing a tool that helps in the teaching-learning process of students with hearing disabilities, favoring inclusion in the academic process, improving the access to opportunities and finally, the quality of life. Therefore, the information transmitted to the non-hearing person, each phrase or word spoken in which voice recognition is made, it is sent in text synchronously using a cellphone, offering support in teaching between the hearing-impaired student and the teacher in the classroom. The research focus is quantitative and descriptive – exploration type. In addition, the application was developed under the Android mobile operating system since it currently provides with a free and open software development environment. Finally, it is significant to implement strategies with ICT since it is a key point in the coexistence of virtual society through the ListenApp application.

Open ecosystem for future industrial Internet of things (IIoT): Architecture and application

Advanced sensing, data analysis and communication techniques have led to the emergence and tremendous development of industrial internet of things (IIoT) in recent years, which raises revolution in condition monitoring and maintenance for electrical assets. An open ecosystem for future IIoT is proposed in this paper and the architecture of the open ecosystem is discussed. An open development environment needs to be established for users to interact with power devices and servers freely via web or mobile applications installed on user terminals, increasing IIoT scalability and flexibility. The core technologies of open ecosystem in future IIoT are discussed, which include comprehensive sensing techniques, wide-area communication tools, Big Data service infrastructure, data analysis algorithms and intelligent maintenance schemes. An application of future IIoT ecosystem in wind farm maintenance is then presented. It is demonstrated that the efficiency and effectiveness of wind farm maintenance can be improved with the support of open ecosystem of future IIoT, providing an innovative insight for electrical assets monitoring and maintenance with high reliability.

An IoT-oriented Fast Prototyping Platform for BLE-based Star Topology Networks

The Internet of Things (IoT) is characterized by many technologies, standards, tools and devices for a wide range of application fields and often, for the end-users (makers and developers), is hard to orientate in an equally wide range of offers from various manufacturers. In recent years, the Bluetooth Low Energy (BLE) communication protocol is achieving a large portion of the market, thanks to its low-power and low-cost orientation and its pervasiveness in mobile devices, like smartphones. For these reasons, BLE is increasingly used in IoT-oriented Wireless Personal Area Networks (WPAN), where a small set of devices arranged in star topology network and connected to a smartphone and a Wi-Fi gateway, can cover a large number of monitoring and controlling use case scenarios. This work presents the ST’s STM32 Open Development Environment (ODE), a complete suite of hardware and software tools representing a reference point for end-users willing to create BLE-based star topology networks for a wide range of applications. Through a simple use case in a smart home context, it is shown how all provided tools can be used to fast prototype applications addressing all user requirements.

Quality control for community-based sea-ice model development.

A new collaborative organization for sea-ice model development, the CICE Consortium, has devised quality control procedures to maintain the integrity of its numerical codes' physical representations, enabling broad participation from the scientific community in the Consortium's open software development environment. Using output from five coupled and uncoupled configurations of the Los Alamos Sea Ice Model, CICE, we formulate quality control methods that exploit common statistical properties of sea-ice thickness, and test for significant changes in model results in a computationally efficient manner. New additions and changes to CICE are graded into four categories, ranging from bit-for-bit amendments to significant, answer-changing upgrades. These modifications are assessed using criteria that account for the high level of autocorrelation in sea-ice time series, along with a quadratic skill metric that searches for hemispheric changes in model answers across an array of different CICE configurations. These metrics also provide objective guidance for assessing new physical representations and code functionality.This article is part of the theme issue ‘Modelling of sea-ice phenomena’.

Automatic outdoor monitoring system for photovoltaic panels

Long-term acquisition of solar panel performance parameters, for panels operated at maximum power point in their real environment, is of critical importance in the photovoltaic research sector. However, few options exist for the characterization of non-standard panels such as concentrated photovoltaic systems, heavily soiled or shaded panels or those operating under non-standard spectral illumination; certainly, it is difficult to find such a measurement system that is flexible and affordable enough to be adopted by the smaller research institutes or universities. We present here an instrument aiming to fill this gap, autonomously tracking and maintaining any solar panel at maximum power point while continuously monitoring its operational parameters and dissipating the produced energy without connection to the power grid. The instrument allows periodic acquisition of current-voltage curves to verify the employed maximum power point tracking approach. At the same time, with hardware schematics and software code being provided, it provides a flexible open development environment for the monitoring of non-standard generators like concentrator photovoltaic systems and to test novel power tracking approaches. The key issues, and the corresponding solutions, encountered in the design are analyzed in detail and the relevant schematics presented.

Competence block approach to high-tech new venture creation: the case of the Octopus programme

This paper provides an analysis of an attempt to accelerate mobile service development, testing and new venture creation in Finland. The Octopus programme, an open innovation, development and testing environment for mobile applications, joins together industrial, educational, and governmental organisations to provide elements to bring new mobile services from innovation to business. The core of Octopus is a live testing environment that can be used by anyone interested in developing mobile services. The analysis points out the importance of understanding the multi-level and multi-actor nature of high-tech entrepreneurship. The Octopus programme is an illuminating case of showing that, when failing in the process of creating interconnectedness between different economic actors, the competence block does not work properly and most importantly does not create new business ventures.

Rigorous engineering of product-line requirements: A case study in failure management

We consider the failure detection and management function for engine control systems as an application domain where product line engineering is indicated. The need to develop a generic requirement set – for subsequent system instantiation – is complicated by the addition of the high levels of verification demanded by this safety-critical domain, subject to avionics industry standards. We present our case study experience in this area as a candidate method for the engineering, validation and verification of generic requirements using domain engineering and Formal Methods techniques and tools. For a defined class of systems, the case study produces a generic requirement set in UML and an example system instance. Domain analysis and engineering produce a validated model which is integrated with the formal specification/verification method B by the use of our UML-B profile. The formal verification both of the generic requirement set, and of a simple system instance, is demonstrated using our U2B, ProB and prototype Requirements Manager tools. This work is a demonstrator for a tool-supported method which will be an output of EU project RODIN (This work is conducted in the setting of the EU funded Research Project: IST 511599 RODIN (Rigorous Open Development Environment for Complex Systems) http://rodin.cs.ncl.ac.uk/ ). The use of existing and prototype formal verification and support tools is discussed. The method, developed in application to this novel combination of product line, failure management and safety-critical engineering, is evaluated and considered to be applicable to a wide range of domains.

A NEW CAD TOOL TO ANALYSIS AND SYNTHESIS OF LOW COST FUZZY CONTROLLERS

In this work an open development environment oriented to the specification, verification and synthesis of low cost fuzzy controllers is presented. This CAD tool also allows the real time control of systems that do not have very small time constant. Among the distinctive characteristics that CAD tool presents is the possibility that the user defines innovative and his own operators, and the possibility of carrying out the direct synthesis of the designed controllers in PLCs generating the controller's code in structured text and using functions of the standard IEC 1131–3.

Correlating temporal communication patterns of the Eclipse open source community with performance and creativity

This paper studies the temporal communication patterns of online communities of developers and users of the open source Eclipse Java development environment. It measures the productivity of each community and seeks to identify correlations that exist between group communication characteristics and productivity attributes. The study uses the TeCFlow (Temporal Communication Flow) visualizer to create movie maps of the knowledge flow by analyzing the publicly accessible Eclipse developer mailing lists as an approximation of the social networks of developers and users. Thirty-three different Eclipse communities discussing development and use of components of Eclipse such as the Java Development Tools, the different platform components, the C/C++ Development Tools and the AspectJ extension have been analyzed over a period of six months. The temporal evolution of social network variables such as betweenness centrality, density, contribution index, and degree have been computed and plotted. Productivity of each development group is measured in terms of two indices, namely performance and creativity. Performance of a group is defined as the ratio of new bugs submitted compared with bugs fixed within the same period of time. Creativity is calculated as a function of new features proposed and implemented. Preliminary results indicate that there is a correlation between attributes of social networks such as density and betweenness centrality and group productivity measures in an open source development community. We also find a positive correlation between changes over time in betweenness centrality and creativity, and a negative correlation between changes in betweenness centrality and performance.

Tool selection for five-axis curvature matched machining

This paper presents an automatic cutting tool selection methodology for five-axis finish surface machining based on the techniques of curvature matched machining. The criterion for cutter selection is to minimize the machine errors and to maximize material removal rate using an optimal filleted end mill selected from a standard cutting tool library. Tool parameters investigated include cutter radius, cutter corner radius and cutter length. The maximum swept silhouette of the inclined tool is proposed and implemented as tool radii selection protocols for matching the change in surface curvature. Algorithms for detection and correction of local tool gouging and global tool interference are presented. The local distance between the cutter bottom and the surface is used to detect and correct local tool gouging. Global tool interference detection and correction is solved by studying the shortest distance between the part surface and the cutter body axis. A faceted approach is used to accelerate the distance calculations. The solution to the local and global gouging problems leads to the shortest, most rigid, tool in the library. These methods of automatic tool selection have been implemented in ROBLINE using the C-language on the system. ROBLINE is a precursor to CODE (Cimetrix Open Development Environment) which is a complete commercial off-line/on-line machine modeling, development and control package. Machined examples confirm the effectiveness of these methods.

A development environment for an object specification language

Techniques for the development of reliable information systems on the basis of their formal specification are the main concern in the project. Our work focuses on the specification language TROLL light which allows one to describe the part of the world to be modeled as a community of concurrently existing and communicating objects. Our specification language comes with an integrated, open development environment. The task of this environment is to give support for the creation of correct information systems. Two important ingredients of the environment are the animator and the proof support system. >

Realising the inadequacy of KR systems based on a single paradigm such as rules, frames, etc, many vendors and researchers are attempting to provide a multitude of these paradigms under one umbrella. Though several systems have been reported for over a decade, there are many issues which are not as yet solved satisfactorily. The semantics of integration is far from clear. The problem is much more complex because many of the paradigms overlap significantly in their expressive power. This paves the way for the same information to be represented by different users using different paradigms, often with different results. Hence the choice of an appropriate KR paradigm for a task continues to be difficult.
