The article examines the shaping of artistic and aesthetic symbolism concepts of Olexander Oles in the context of native traditions, the transformation of mythological images and stories in the artistic heritage of the artist (figurative, topical, genre). The influence of ancient and biblical images integration is defined, in a kind of symbolic space of the modernists’ poetry, showing a reflection of the myth and religion mutuality. Interpreting mythological material according to his philosophical foundations, the artist became the singer of the bonded region revival, of the man and his free native word. The shape of Prometheus has been analyzed. It is filled with symbolic nature, while gaining a national flavor in accordance with the mentality of the Ukrainian people, namely the willingness to sacrifice and a high level of humanism.

Bukovinian “Malanka” in the general european carnival context

The article reveals Carnival as a product of a pan-European civilization and Catholicism in general is not typical for Eastern Europe. The purpose of the article is to describe the ethnic features of the Bukovina New Year's "Malanka", which has many local variants, which belongs to carnival holidays with bright ethnic and folkloric colors. Scientific novelty. For the sake of preserving and popularizing this unique ritual complex it is worth organizationally to join the Foundation of European Carnival cities (FECC). Conclusions: After the proposed study, we can conclude that the carnival as a product of Western civilization and Catholicism is usually not typical for Eastern Europe. Bukovina New Year's "Malanka" is one of the events of the carnival type with a bright ethnic and national flavor. To preserve and popularize a unique ritual set, it is worthwhile to join the European Carnival Foundation.

Chinese Animation in Wan brothers’ Creative Work

Chinese animation as one of the prominent animation schools in the world has its own peculiarities, poetics and national flavour. Its experience is of significant interest for national and world culturology and analysis of world animation evolution. The main role in the origin of the national animation school belongs to brothers Wan who defined the outlook of the Chinese animation, elaborated its technological base and created the studio system. tte article deals with the evolution of technical devices and thematic changes in brothers Wan films whose art determined the formation of the Chinese animation school.

О НАЦИОНАЛЬНОМ СВОЕОБРАЗИИ ЦВЕТОВОЙ СИМВОЛИКИ В РУССКОМ И КИТАЙСКОМ ЯЗЫКАХ

The article is devoted to the research on the national specific features of color symbolism embodied in color words in the Russian and Chinese languages. In a language system, each color is characterized by cognitive, emotional and information functions for all the peoples of the world. However, in a particular culture each color serves as a special symbol, which can be associated by native speakers with similar or different emotions and reflect rich potential of national cultures. Color words, having symbolic properties, are not only important means to describe the world, but also they perform a cultural-linguistic function to convey emotions of people belonging to different nations. In the Russian and Chinese languages, there are many color words with a strong national flavor. Apart from evoking rich associations and expressing emotional experiences and feelings, they also form a distinct national color culture and have a great influence on human life of the two countries. The vivid contrast between the two languages helps to comprehend the semantic motivation of color words, shades of meanings of color symbolism and cultural identity.

أهمية المعجم في ترسيخ مفهوم المواطنة

هدفت الدراسة للكسف عن دور المعجم في ترسيخ مفهوم المواطنة . حيث تم استخدام منهجين من مناهج الدرس اللغوي المعاصر: الأول- المنهج الوصفي بوصف مظاهر رصد المعجم للمبادئ التي تؤجج مشاعر الانتماء الوطني لدى أبناء اللغة. والثاني- منهج النقد المعجمي الذي يُعنَى بتقويم المعجم. حيث بُنِىَ البحث من مقدمة ومبحثين وخاتمة، عنوان المبحث الأول- مدخلات أولية، ويضم مطالب ثلاثة: الأول- تحديد الدلالة في المعجم العربي، والثاني- مصطلح المواطنة نشأته ومعناه، والثالث- متطلبات المعجم الجديد. ووسِم المبحث الثاني بالوطن والمواطنة في المعاصر والأساسي، ويشمل مطالب أربعة: الأول الجذر (و ط ن)، والثاني- مداخل المصطلحات المشتركة، والثالث- صياغة التعريف في المعجمين، والرابع- الأمثلة الداعمة للمواطنة. خلصت الدراسة إلى إن بالمعجمين المدروسين معلومات كثيرة ذات مسحة وطنية- وإن فاق أحدهما- غير موجودة بالمعاجم السابقة، وبهما جهد واضح، وفيهما تحقق مظاهر الصناعة المعجمية الحديثة، من جانب، ومظاهر معنى كون الفرد منتميًّا إلى بلد دون آخر وله ولاؤه، من جانب آخر، فضلًا عن وجود المداخل التثقيفية التي ترتبط بالمشاركة والفاعلية الحقيقية.

THE METHODS OF TRANSLATION OF HISTORIC REALITIES FROM THE RUSSIAN LANGUAGE IN TRANSLATED LITERATURE

Now speakers have a steady interest in the origins, roots, traditions - the history of their own people. The tendency to isolation, deepening into roots - origins, in harmony combines with the pursuit of cross-cultural communication, integration of literature and languages, which in turn dictates the relevance of the research. The article discusses the features of the translation of historical realities, taken as a linguistic material from the novels of famous Tatar writers N. Fattaha, M. Habibullin, R. Batully, V. Imamov. Realities are explored that the lexical items that are inherent in both the national and historical flavor. By comparative analysis the receptions translation of Tatar actual-historicism into Russian were considered. Particular attention is paid to non-equivalent translation. When non-equivalent translation the lexical units of the source language (in this case the Tatar language) has no direct correspondence in the translated language (Russian). The author notes some productive ways to transfer historical realities in works of writers: transliteration, transcription, translation descriptive, explanation.

By-elections in British Politics, 1832-1914

Newport (1922), East Fulham (1933) and Orpington (1962) are engraved into the souls of twentieth century political historians, in no small part due to Cook and Ramsden's By-elections in British Politics (Routledge, 1997), which examined contests since 1918. Until now, nineteenth century historians have not been able to latch onto equivalent milestones. So, the appearance of By-elections in British Politics 1832–1914 may raise hopes that this is about to change. However, the editors of this book have set out on a different course, taking a thematic approach rather than focusing on individual contests. The rationale of the thematic approach is entirely justified. Few individual by-elections of the period 1832–1914 had the transformative impact of Spen Valley, Newport, East Fulham or Orpington, but the overall patterns and sheer numbers provide some very clear insights into the way in which the British electoral system was evolving over the period 1832–1914. There were 2600 by-elections—three times the number which occurred in the similar span of time from 1918. Between 1852 and 1857, for instance, one-third of all seats were subject to a by-election (p. 2). The overall picture which emerges is one of an increasingly competitive situation, with by-election performance subject to intense contemporary analysis and contests which had more of a national flavour than might have been previously understood. As with the pattern in the twentieth century, the government of the day tended to suffer adverse swings in by-elections. However, overall, by-elections were more of a headache for the Liberals; the Conservatives faced fewer by-elections and were more often successful.

Taming terror: domestication of the war on terror in the Pakistan media

While media studies have focused on journalist roles in framing foreign news events for local readers to render them suitable for national audiences, there has been less attention to similar roles played by other social actors in bringing ‘home’ new models about existing realities. Therefore, this paper addresses the question of how a global catchphrase, ‘war on terror,’ acquired a national paradigm status by virtue of its use by multiple actors in the media sphere in Pakistan. We analyse all the articles mentioning the catchphrase in a leading national English daily over two years to unpack how the war on terror turned from being ‘their’ war in America to becoming ‘our’ war in Pakistan. Drawing on media studies of localization, we discuss the rhetorical modes by which the term was embedded in the Pakistani political field to give it a distinct national flavour. We refer to this process as ‘domestication’, by which the catchphrase was adopted in Pakistan by local, interested actors including media professionals. We draw particular attention to the way in which this complex process naturalizes the term by nationalizing it.

Nostalgia and Cultural Memory in Barber's Knoxville: Summer of 1915

Abstract Samuel Barber's “lyric rhapsody” for soprano and orchestra, Knoxville: Summer of 1915 (1947), is one of his most celebrated and complicated pieces. The most ostensibly backward-looking, nostalgic work of this “conservative,” neoromantic composer, Knoxville is yet atypical of Barber in that by most accounts it is the most American piece in an oeuvre otherwise rarely seen as touched by national flavor. Dating from an era just recovering from the cataclysm of World War II, Knoxville can be seen as conjuring a gentler age, a state of lost innocence, which as its subsequent reception has showed proved an enduring site of cultural memory. And this work that appeals to so many as an embodiment of collective national identity is simultaneously wrapped up in a highly personal response by Barber to a text of James Agee with a deeply autobiographical meaning for author and composer. Knoxville: Summer of 1915 offers a rich source of insight into Barber's music and aesthetics, in its constructions of memory and nostalgia at both a personal, autobiographical level and broader cultural one. Excavating these layers reveals a fuller picture of the composer and what his music has been taken to mean, exposing the relationship between Barber's private world and wider cultural movements and his often understated politics.

Carlos Guastavino: The Intersection of Musica culta and Musica popular in Argentine Song

In the history of Argentine art music, few composers have been able to blend the worlds of música culta and música popular more successfully than Carlos Guastavino (1912-2000). More than simply borrowing elements of popular music to give his concert music a distinctive national flavor, he created works that, in the hands of the right performers, could thrive easily and convincingly in both environments. This is especially true in the genre of song, which makes up the largest part of Guastavino's works. While many of his songs belong firmly to the tradition of the art song, there are also numerous songs that occupy a position somewhere between art song and popular song. In this paper I will examine several of Guastavino's songs from the 1960s published under the series title "Canciones Populares." First, however, it will be helpful to give an overview of his songs as a whole.

The View from Abroad

In January this year, Liu Yuxi, a Chinese violinist, and Zhou Shiqiong, a Chinese pianist, both taking advanced classes in France, gave two extraordinary concerts, one in Paris, another in Grenoble, a city and cultural center in southern France. programs they performed were half Western classical music and half Chinese, including White-haired Girl, Liang Shanbo and Zhu Yingtai, The Spring of Xinjiang, Pastoral Song, and The Grief in memory of Premier Zhou. This was an attempt on their part to use Western instruments in playing Chinese musical works for the Western public. French audience not only appreciated the Chinese musicians' skillful performance of the Western music with which they were familiar, but also enjoyed even more the music with a distinctive Chinese national flavor. After the performance, listeners in large numbers came forward to extend their congratulations. Some Traditional Games from Roumania

FOR THE PAST several years (since I940, to be exact) I have been collecting materials for a book of non-singing games. When completed, it will consist of a hundred or more American games and a large section of foreign parallels and analogues and comparative notes. As a contribution to the latter, a collection of fifteen traditional Roumanian games was sent me recently by Miss Valerica Osoianu, a student in the University of Iasi, who very kindly consented to their publication in a folklore journal in advance of their appearance in my book. Since American folklorists are, I think, not too well acquainted with Roumanian folklore, it occurred to me that the printing of these games in the Journal might help to interest others in the wealth of tradition in that littleknown but highly interesting country. Accordingly, I present them here, with the consent and approval of the contributor. That these games are traditional is attested not only by Miss Osoianu but also by older members of her family. They were played by her, by her parents, by her grandparents, and by her great-grandparents; some of them appear to go back to the very beginnings of the Roumanian people. The English translations were made by Mr. Stephen Siklody, the father of Miss Osoianu's brother-in-law, and a man of intelligence and discrimination. Most of the notes which accompanied the game descriptions are his. I have quoted liberally from the comments of both the contributor and the translator in order to preserve the national flavor of the games.
