Abstract
In the history of Argentine art music, few composers have been able to blend the worlds of música culta and música popular more successfully than Carlos Guastavino (1912-2000). More than simply borrowing elements of popular music to give his concert music a distinctive national flavor, he created works that, in the hands of the right performers, could thrive easily and convincingly in both environments. This is especially true in the genre of song, which makes up the largest part of Guastavino's works. While many of his songs belong firmly to the tradition of the art song, there are also numerous songs that occupy a position somewhere between art song and popular song. In this paper I will examine several of Guastavino's songs from the 1960s published under the series title "Canciones Populares." First, however, it will be helpful to give an overview of his songs as a whole.
