Contemporary issues of languaging, participation and ways-of-being

Abstract This paper introduces the theme of Languaging, Diversity and Democracy. Contemporary issues of participation and ways-of-being and positions the 12 individual papers that constitute the 2022 double special issue of Bandung: Journal of the Global South. Its interest lies in contributing to knowledge that is relevant for contemporary human challenges related to issues of mobility, digitalization, and communication in and across different geopolitical regions across the planet and across virtual-physical spaces. Raising concerns regarding universalizing tendencies of special issues (and collected volumes generally), and based on the premise that what kind of knowledge matters is tied up with the issue of whose knowledge and in what named-language this knowledge matters, this paper raises critical queries that focus on the narrators positionality and gaze, the composition of scholarly narratives, the flow of narratives, what vocabularies circulate in frontline scholarship, including the organization of special issues, etc. Drawing attention to the universalizing Euro/America-centrism that shapes what counts as knowledge, the paper draws attention to the taken-for-grantedness of what counts as international languages of publishing which eclipses alternative epistemologies, ways-of-thinking and ways-of-being. It argues that by taking such issues as inspiration in the curation and editing of this double special issue, participatory processes and ways-of-being enabled a contribution to the doing of democracy and diversity in the scholarly enterprise. Such work of democratizing academic publication work calls for unlearning to learn that is closely related to the theme explored in the double special issue. Aligning with analogue-digital languaging in contemporary existence, the paper also traces the journey of how this double special issue has come into being.

NARRATIVE PARAGRAPH COMPOSITION: A DESCRIPTION OF EFL LEARNERS’ PROFICIENCY IN USING PAST TENSE

It is unavoidable that writing becomes a compulsory subject in English Department as it is one of notable skills that ought to be acquired by English language learners. They are demanded to possess a better writing proficiency after taking certain writing subjects. Nonetheless, writing is perceived as the most troublesome English language learning capability since it constitutes a productive skill. To specify, expressing ideas and using grammatically correct language are considered quite challenging for students. This study, accordingly, was carried out to investigate the learners’ writing production to find out their expertise in composing a past narrative paragraph in particular. Therefore, fourteen compositions of second semester students in academic year 2018/2019 were employed in this investigation. The findings show that most of them composed narrative paragraph precisely, i.e. by applying chronological development or time order. That notwithstanding, the majority of them used verb tense incorrectly in their past narrative composition.

РОЛЬ СИНЕСТЕЗИИ В ИЗОБРАЗИТЕЛЬНОЙ ДЕЯТЕЛЬНОСТИ НЕСЛЫШАЩИХ

The article is devoted to the artistic creativity of the hearing impaired. It analyzes paintings and drawings created by deaf art students and compares these works with those of hearing students. As any art is synesthetic, that is, it has certain intersensory connections, we can say that music is the closest to painting because of its various synesthetic connections reflecting colour relations, rhythm and composition. Here, the concepts of harmony, interval, tone, tonality, which are based on a system of relations, are very close. Since the deaf are deprived of the ability to fully perceive musical harmonies, the analysis of their pictorial works is of particular importance for understanding their worldview and artistic language. In the creative process, there is a close relationship between perception of various aspects of life and artistic expression. In this context, it is interesting to study the colour work of deaf artists, whose life perception is physically limited, especially in the musical field. The article also considers the features of using rhythm and space in the artworks of hearing impaired art students. Based on this analysis, it is concluded that the sense of rhythm does not actually differ between hearing and non-hearing people. The sense of artistic space is weaker in the deaf than in the hearing. Narrative compositions created by the hearing impaired have no significant features.

The Effect Of Using Image Media and Vocabulary Mastery on Narrative Composition Ability in Elementary School Students

The purpose of this study is to find out the effect of using image media and vocabulary mastery on narrative composition ability in Elementary School students. The method used in this study is the experimental method. The population in this study was students in class V of SDN 1 Labuhan in a total of 127 people divided into 3 classes. The classes used as research samples are VA class as experiment, VB class as control and VC class as instrument trial class. The sampling technique in this study is a random sampling technique. The researcher's data analysis uses the t test and an ANAVA variance analysis. The results of this study are (1) there is a difference in the ability to make up narratives of students who learn to use image media and students who learn to use audio media research data shows a score of 2,263 with a significant 0.026 < 0.05, (2) there is a difference in the ability to make up narratives in the group of students who master high vocabulary between learning to use image media and using audio media (sound) Based on calculations, obtained experiments with a significant count of 0.031 and a t table of 1.761 at a significant level of 0.05. Because the calculation > t table and a significant level of 0.031< 0.05, (3) there is a difference in the ability to make up narratives in groups of students who master low vocabulary, between those who learn to use image media and use audio media (sound), and (4) there is an interaction of the use of image media and mastery of student vocabulary with the ability to make up student narratives. Therefore, the researchers concluded that there is an interaction between the use of image media and the mastery of student vocabulary to the ability to make up student narratives.

PROCESS WRITING APPROACH IN ENHANCING HIGH SCHOOL STUDENTS’ ESL WRITING COMPETENCY

This study was conducted to determine the impact of using process approach in writing narrative composition for Senior High School students who were taking Reading and Writing subject. It focused on determining students’ progress in writing narrative composition in terms of organization, coherence, appropriate language use, and mechanics. The study used quasi-experimental one-group pretest-posttest design wherein the respondents, who were chosen through total population sampling, underwent pre-test in which they were tasked to write narrative composition using traditional approach. Process writing approach was implemented with the use of activity manual as teaching- learning guide wherein the final output was evaluated as post-test of the study. Based on the findings, Senior High School students were not competent in writing narrative composition especially in terms of coherence, appropriate language use and mechanics using traditional approach. But with the use of process writing approach, the students were assessed to become proficient in four writing competencies. Thus, the study recommended the use of process writing approach as it was found effective in enhancing students’ competency in writing narrative composition.

Mulheres e narrativa audiovisual brasileira: reconfigurações a partir de marcos temporais

In 2020, we celebrate 25 years of the Beijing Action Platform. In Brazil, we now have 14 years of the Maria da Penha Law and 5 years of the Feminicide Law. Based on these three time frames, we made a quantitative survey of Brazilian cinematographic and audiovisual documentary productions on feminicide. These works are analyzed qualitatively, based on Paul Ricouer’s triple mimesis and the relationships he established between time and narrative. The social and cultural context of insertion of the narrated cases, the possible mediations and the voices of the narrator are also problematized by three aspects: the reflections on women as negative, by Simone de Beauvoir; the notion of silencing worked on by Rebecca Solnit; and Judith Butler’s gender as performance approach. The chosen theme and methodology are potent tools for understanding the documentary narrative composition about feminicide that explains ruptures and permanences of gender stereotypes.

ANALYSIS OF ENGLISH PREPOSITIONAL ERRORS IN SENIOR HIGH SCHOOL’S STUDENTS IN INDONESIA

This research is aimed at identifying the grammatical errors focused on English Prepositions produced by Senior High School’s Students in Garut. The objectives of this research are to investigate the types of grammatical errors focused on English prepositions by Senior High School Students and to find the most frequent type of these errors. The method of this research is the descriptive qualitative method. The researcher gave the test consists of 20 sentences that were incomplete in narrative composition. The students were asked to complete the sentence with the correct preposition chosen in multiple-choice. The finding shows that the twelfth-grade students as the participant contributed three types of errors on the use of prepositions to complete the sentences. Those errors are 30,93% in the error of omission, 26,25% in the error of insertion, and 42,81% in the error of selection. Thus, the most frequent type of errors produced by students of twelfth grade is the error of selection that reaches 42,81%. It indicates that students faced difficulties in using prepositions appropriately.

PROSPECTS OF DIGITAL SILK ROAD IN CENTRAL ASIA

The article is devoted to the analysis of commemorative trends in the social consciousness of the masses and the role of myth-making as one of the tools for constructing the present and future on the example of the fine art of Kazakhstan. The particularity of the situation is that the cultural and historical material of the past is in demand by all layers of the modern postcolonial society of the republic. At the same time, in the background of another transitional moment in history, the establishment of state sovereignty of post-Soviet countries is complicated by the enormous social upheavals of the XXI century. Technological innovations and the general dynamics of the development of the modern world have created opportunities for a variety of manipulations of human consciousness, but its fundamental needs in the search for identity have remained the same. In this connection, the text of the article gives a brief description of the situation that contributed to the development of the modern context of the culture of Kazakhstan. The methodological framework of the research was the fundamental works of scientists, on the issues of historical and collective cultural memory, as well as the study of modern mythology in the culture of the XX-XXI centuries. It is claimed, that the reconstruction of the historical context leads the Kazakh masters to create new mythologies, and the creative thinking of the artist allows him to build the lost, through the prism of human mythological consciousness. The article focuses on the historical genre, also provides examples from the works of artists made by State orders and according to their own author's requests, where the most characteristic features are epic, monumental, and narrative compositions.

An Analysis of Students’ Error on the Use of Simple Preposition in Narrative Composition Made by the Eleventh Grade of SMK Tunas Karya Pekanbaru

The purpose of this research is to analyze the eleventh grade students’ error in using preposition in writing narrative text at SMK Tunas Karya Pekanbaru. This study was a descriptive research, the subject of this research was the eleventh grade students’ of SMK Tunas Karya Pekanbaru while the object of this research was students’ error in using preposition in writing narrative text. The researcher used purposive sampling technique to take the sample, there were 35 students as sample from 96 students. To collect the data the researcher used test. The test was conducted to know what types of errors were made by the students when they used preposition in writing narrative text. The result of the error analysis process showed that students committee error into three types: omission, insertion and selection. From the calculation of the data, error of insertion is the most frequent errors that done by the eleventh grade students of SMK Tunas Karya Pekanbaru with the percentage 41.9%. Moreover it is followed by error of omission with percentage 30.9%, and error of selection with percentage 27.1%.

The writer selects four types of narrative to improve students’ writing skill after reading several theories from scholars and analyzing their ideas on the application of four narratives. By applying four types of narrative, university students in Indonesia will have better understanding in writing good narrative compositions. And they will also learn how to express their ideas and write them smoothly in the form of narrative writing. Furthermore, the variety of passages in these narrative writings can motivate students to create interesting writing since the nature of these narratives are reflecting their experience directly. In this library research, the writer finds out several advantages which can be obtained from these four narratives. The advantages students can get such as, learn to arrange chronological order inside their writing, expressing experience in dramatic ways, showing the dynamic interpersonal relationships, and increasing their possession for new vocabularies relatively help students to make good narrative writing.

The characteristics of critical realism in Alexander McQueen’s fashion collection

In this study, the artistic background and formative nature of representative 19th century realist artists Gustave Courbet and Honore Daumier were analyzed and applied in a fashion context. By displaying representational desires (necessary adhesions of man and society) in their work, they became characteristic matrixes of critical realism and to perceive critical realism. The purpose of the study was to apply the characteristics of critical realism to the contemporary fashion collections of Alexander McQueen. Research was conducted to analyze the characteristics that appear in the field of fashion and to review methods of expression and internal aesthetics displayed through various aspects of fashion design. Characteristics of critical realism were analyzed by researching the formativeness and periodical background of the paintings of Courbet and Daumier. Based on these characteristics, analysis was conducted to identify critical realism in the fashion collections of Alexander McQueen. Data and scope included fashion information sites, internet photo data, and video material. Critical realist characteristics were categorized into five types as follows: ‘The proper borrowing of extremely realistic subjects signifies’, ‘satirical reconstruction and narrative composition’, ‘antipathetic distortions and abject representations’, ‘critical reproductions based on technology’, and ‘the maximization of ambivalent sexuality’. It was concluded that the characteristics of critical realism (recognized by the common formation of Courbet and Daumier) also appeared in Alexander McQueen's fashion collection but were inherited in a form that transcended pictorial expression due to the overall difference in use of visual arts.

Youth’s Life Space Narrative Research

The current study aims to distinguish objects and events, which teens and adolescents include in their life's spaces, explore differences in attitudes towards life spaces, and determine the level of life's space satisfaction of the youth via narrative psycholinguistic research. Methods: Methodological approaches inhered in interviewing and content analysis of the texts by calculating the frequency and investigating the components of the life's space category references that were defined based on the narrative compositions. The validity of categorisation was proved by propositional analysis. Spearman's rank correlation method was used. Results: The research results showed that stories people tell us holds powerful sway over their memories, behaviours, and identities. The youth's space was analysed within three content blocks: structural, interpretational, and evaluative. The structural block defined categories: people; city; habitable space; educational institution; social environment and information; activity; nature; state and patriotism; the inner world. The interpretational block analysis defined interpretational judgments and attributions of the responsibility for actions and changes in the participants' lives. The evaluative block analysis revealed the significant differences between teenagers and adolescents and between females and males in terms of life's space evaluation. Conclusions: The structure of teens’ and adolescents’ live space is similar, but its interpretation and evaluation are significantly different. Proceeding from teenage to adolescence is followed by such changes as growing dissatisfaction of the existing life's space and the wish to change it; growing internality, i.e., understanding personal responsibility of the life's space formation.

ADDRESSING STRATEGIES IN THE TEXTS OF SHEVCHENKO-STORYTELLER

The paper considers the metanarrative (exegetical) and metanarrative (exegetical) and metafictional (diegetical) aspects of a work, the ways of the author’s contacts with the reader/listener. The nature of addressing may be direct, which implies the explicit addressee, and hidden, designed for the implicit addressee. The latter is present as an ideal recipient who perceives the aesthetic mode of the work. The strategy of intimate connection with the reader is based on the ascending evaluative direction, while the descending one serves as a basis for the discrediting strategy, realized in a number of communicative tactics, used by the narrators-addressers. The images of the narrator and storytellers perform different functions (hero, character-witness); the narrative composition of each story is not repeated in other works, gradually becoming more complicated. The author uses various compositional and verbal forms: in addition to a consistent story and narrative, description and reflection, he involves the forms of inserted narrative, epistolary text, and even a full-length story of an eyewitness. Tactics of oral communication and its constitutive stylistic features are presented by D. Barannyk as Shevchenko’s version of Ukrainian oral narrative, open to the addressee, and as a means of involving the reader in the imaginary world of a work. The term ‘self-presentation’ as an action of informing the addressee about the narrator’s occupation and his social status in order to establish contact differs from ‘self-thematization’ which is an intimate self-characterization of the narrator, addressed to a friendly reader/listener. The latter also includes the digressive reflections of the narrator on moralistic, sociological, historical, artistic topics, which reveal his mentality.

Narrating a Valley in Max Frisch’s Der Mensch erscheint im Holozän: Material Agency, Rain, and the Geologic Past

The complex narrative composition of image and text in Max Frisch’s Der Mensch erscheint im Holozän discloses entanglements between humans and nonhuman entities that impact the narrative and that demand careful consideration. The story depicts the aging protagonist’s struggle with memory loss and his careful examination of the valley’s mountain formations in fear of a landslide. In this analysis, I show that both of these threats can be read as entangled with nonhuman agents. By focusing on the material dimension of the text, two central and related shifts occur: the background element of rain becomes foregrounded in the narrative, and the natural formations of the valley that are assumed to be static are revealed to be dynamic. These shifts lead to an interpretation of Frisch’s text focused on the impacts of rain and the temporal scale of the text’s geologic dimension. Approaching the text through the lens of material ecocriticism unveils the multiple agencies at play, decenters the human, and illustrates the embodied experience of climate change.

Принципы и методы создания сюжетных композиций современного стрит-арта

The paper traces the evolution of compositional solutions and figurative content of narrative street art from its inception to the present and identifies the most common constituent elements of narrative street art compositions. They include: narrative photo images, narrative digital art, narrative unique and printed author's graphics, narrative scenes and elements from the works of classical, national art and mass culture. The author considers the relationship between the evolution of technical means in the arsenal of street art artists and creative techniques and methods performed in figurative street art compositions. The narrative component was present already at the stage of graffiti and early street art, then gradually evolved towards greater significance and diversity of compositional solutions, reaching its heyday in modern public art. The study discusses characteristic creative techniques of iconic figures in contemporary street art and their role in the process of evolution of narrative street art compositions. Among them are Seen, K. Haring, J. M. Basquiat, Banksy, Ma Claim, Shepard Fairey, as well as the Russian cult street-art artist Pavel Pukhov, who gained international fame during his lifetime. The authors determined main methods of creating narrative compositions in contemporary street art; the most commonly used ones are the literal reproduction of narrative source material, the multiplication of primary sources, their mixing, superimposition and collage. The paper outlines the main principles of successful narrative street art compositions, including the relevance of the narrative, communication and contextual aspects, poster art, ensuring a quick perception by using an artistic language accessible to the mass audience, the use of easily recognizable allusions and archetypical images.

This article examines the plot of visions on the beating a demon by a saint is not typical for the original Old Russian writings. This plot is included in the typology proposed earlier. It represents one of the possible ways of organizing a vast, thematically diverse material of vi-sions. Most of the examples of our typology are plots in the composition of hagiographic nar-ratives of various types. The considered plot is one these cases. We have analyzed two examples of visions containing scenes of beating demons from literary compositions of different times. From the Byzantine Life of Andrew the Fool that one of the first in the 12th century in-troduced the Russian reader to this plot. Also from the Life of the Monk Epiphanius written at the end of the Old Russian tradition. Typologically similar features of visions are noted: the presence of a common structural scheme, participation in the formation of the event of two characters of the sacred and infernal worlds at once. The revealed specificity of the scene of beating demons is explained by tradition, the time of writings and their pragmatic orientation. Thus, an interesting, visual story on the beating the demon full of artistic details in the Byzan-tine Life characterizes the height of the spiritual feat of the saint. In the Life of Epiphany, a similar story reflects the worldview of an ascetic, also demonstrates the phenomenon of “lit-erary materialization of visions”. Examples of visions from the Lives of Andrew the Fool and the Monk Epiphanius demonstrate the evolution in the depiction of the scene of the beating demons in the literary process of medieval Russia, reflecting significant changes in the genre of visions in the transitional period of Russian literature.
