The Effect of Kluwak Extract on Discoloration Nanohybrid Composite Resin

Background: Composite resin is the most commonly used restorative material in dentistry because it has good esthetics. However, consuming colored foods and drinks over a long period of time can cause discoloration. Kluwak, an ingredient often used in Indonesian cooking, contains tannins, which can change the color of the nanohybrid composite resin if consumed over a long period of time. Purpose: To determine and explain the effect of kluwak solution (pangium edule r) on the color change of nanohybrid composite resin. Methods and materials: The research was conducted experimental laboratory pre and post test. The number of samples was 30 nanohybrid composite resins with a diameter of 10 mm and a height or thickness of 2 mm, divided into 3 treatment groups, each group consisting of 10 samples with immersion for 1 day, 3 days, and 5 days in kluwak solution. Results: One way ANOVA test results (p0.05) showed the effect of kluwak solution on hue color changes in nanohybrid composite resins. Conclusion: There is an effect of immersion in kluwak solution (pangium edule r) on nanohybrid composite resin.

In-vitro evaluation of fracture resistance of teeth restored with different high-viscosity glass ionomer restorative materials and bulk-fill composite resins

ObjectivesThis study aimed to evaluate the effect of restorations made with a glass-hybrid restorative system (GHRS), a high-viscosity glass ionomer restorative material (HVGIC), a high-viscosity bulk-fill composite resin (HVB), a flowable bulk-fill composite resin (FB), and a nanohybrid composite resin (NH), which are commonly preferred in clinical applications on the fracture resistance of teeth in-vitro.Materials and methodsOne hundred intact human premolar teeth were included in the study. The teeth were randomly divided into ten groups (n = 10). No treatment was applied to the teeth in Control group. Class II cavities were prepared on the mesial surfaces of the remaining ninety teeth in other groups. For restoration of the teeth, a GHRS, a HVGIC, a HVB, a FB, and a NH were used. Additionally, in four groups, teeth were restored using NH, GHRS, and HVGIC with open and closed-sandwich techniques. After 24 h, fracture resistance testing was performed. One-way ANOVA and Tukey HDS tests were used for statistical analysis of the data.ResultsThe fracture resistance values of Control group were statistically significantly higher than those of GHRS, HVGIC, FB, NH, HVGIC-CS, GHRS-OS, and HVGIC-OS groups(p < 0.05). There was no statistically significant difference observed between the fracture resistance values of Control, HVB, and GHRS-CS groups (p > 0.05).ConclusionIt can be concluded that the use of HVB and the application of GHRS with a closed-sandwich technique may have a positive effect on the fracture resistance of teeth in the restoration of wide Class II cavities.Clinical relevanceThe use of high-viscosity bulk-fill composite resin and the application of glass-hybrid restorative system with the closed-sandwich technique in the restoration of teeth with wide Class II cavities could increase the fracture resistance of the teeth.

Cytotoxicity effects and differentiation potential of ormocer-based and nanohybrid composite resins on human dental pulp stem cells

Objectiveto compare conventional nanohybrid (Ceram.x Spectra) and ormocer-based (Admira fusion) dental composite resins effects on human dental pulp stem cells (hDPSCs) in terms of cytotoxicity, self-renewal, migration and osteogenic differentiation. MethodshDPSCs were cultured in presence of different dilutions (undiluted, form 1:2 to 1:100) of CeramX (CX) and Admira fusion (AD) eluates and viability assay in standard or osteogenic conditions were performed. Samples and eluates were prepared according to ISO 10993–12. In addition, apoptosis, self-renewal and migration activity evaluations were carried out. Osteogenic differentiation potential was tested by Alkaline Phosphatase Activity, alizarin red staining and gene expression of specific markers (ALP, RUNX2, OCN, OPN and COL1α1). Statistical analysis was performed by means of a One-way analysis of variance (One-way ANOVA) followed by a Tukey’s test for multiple comparison; results were presented as mean ± standard error of mean (SEM). ResultsAdmira Fusion demonstrated to be highly biocompatible and showed positive effects on hDPSCs proliferation and differentiation; on the contrary, conventional nanohybrid composite showed to be more cytotoxic and without any notable effect on stem cells differentiation. Moreover, the obtained results were further corroborated by a significant upregulation of osteogenic differentiation markers obtained in presence of ormocer-based composite resin eluate. Specifically, in AD 1:50 group expression levels of ALP, Runx2, Col1α1 were double than control (ALP, p = 0.045; Runx2, p = 0.003; Col1α1, p = 0.001) and CX 1:50 (ALP, p = 0.006; RUNX2, p = 0.029; Col1α1, p = 0.005). Moreover, in the same group, OPN and OCN resulted about 5 times more expressed as compared to control (OPN, p = 0.009; OCN, p = 0.0005) and CX 1:50 (OPN, p = 0.012; OCN, p = 0.0006). SignificanceThe less cytotoxicity obtained by AD than conventional nanohybrid composite may be attributed to a reduced monomers release in the oral environment, supporting the hypothesis of limited adverse effect and enhanced healing potential, mainly when the material is positioned in close contact with pulp tissue.

Effect of phytopigments on discoloration of nanohybrid composite: An in vitro study

Objective: The purpose of this study is to comparatively evaluate the effect of discoloration of nanohybrid composite by four different phytopigments. Materials and Methods: Fifty disk-shaped samples of nanohybrid (3M Filtek Z350) resin composites were prepared using an acrylic template of dimension 5 mm × 3 mm. They were randomly divided into five groups and immersed in solutions of tomato powder, beetroot powder, java plum powder, and turmeric powder. Distilled water was used as the control group. The samples were placed in respective solutions for 3 h daily and stored in artificial saliva for the rest of the day for 28 days. Color values (L*, a*, b*) were measured by colorimeter using the CIE L*a*b* system at the end of the 7th and 28th days of immersion. Color differences ΔE*ab were statistically analyzed. Results: All the samples showed a change in color of nanohybrid composite resin to varying degrees. The mean ΔE*ab value obtained with beetroot solution was the highest among all the groups at the end of the 7th and 28th days, depicting that beetroot solution showed maximum mean color variation, followed by java plum solution, turmeric solution, and tomato solution. Conclusion: All the phytopigments used in this study have the potential to discolor the nanohybrid composite resin, with beetroot causing the most severe discoloration.

The effect of different liquids on the surface roughness and color stability of single shade and nanohybrid resin composites: An AFM and SEM analysis.

The aim of this study is to evaluate the surface roughness (SR) and color changes of single-shade and nanohybrid resin-based restorative materials (RBC) after immersion in liquids at different pH values. For RBCs, a total of 120 specimens, 30 for each material, were prepared using 10 mm diameter and 2 mm thick molds. For flowable bulk fill RBC, a total of 40 specimens, 10 for each material, were prepared using 10 mm diameter and 4 mm thick molds (n = 10). After initial color and SR measurements, samples were stored in the liquids for 14 days and all of the measurements were repeated on 14th days. Scanning electron microscopy and atomic force microscopy analyzes were performed in all groups. When SR results are examined; among all liquids, the highest SR value was observed in the Carisma Diamond One (CDO) group, while the lowest SR value was observed in the Omnichroma Flow Bulk (OMF) group (p < .05). When the color changes (ΔE) results are examined; it was observed that CDO group had highest color change and OMF group had the lowest values. It has been observed that among the liquids, the liquids that affect the ΔE values of the materials the most are coffee and cola. When the ΔE values of the subgroups of the materials were examined, there was a statistically significant difference in all subgroups of RBCs (p < .05). While acidic liquids increased the SR of RBCs, coffee more affected the color change of RBCs. RESEARCH HIGHLIGHTS: Clinicians should keep in mind that the RBCs tested may change their surface properties and colors when exposed to various liquids. People who have RBCs should pay attention to the consumption of acidic and highly pigmented liquids.

Color Stability of Bioactive Restorative Material vs Nanohybrid Resin Composite: An In Vitro Study.

This study aimed to assess the color stability of bioactive restorative materials vs nanohybrid resin composites after 3 months of immersion in three frequently consumed beverages. Thirty disk-shaped specimens of Giomer dental restorative material (Shofu, Japan) and nanohybrid resin composite (Tokuyama, Japan) were performed using a Teflon mold. Super-Snap system (Shofu, Japan) was utilized to finish and polish the specimens to be preserved for 24 hours in distilled water at 37°C. The samples had been divided into three subgroups (Coffee, tea, Pepsi) (n = 5). The initially displayed color measurements of the samples were performed using a spectrophotometer (VITA Easyshade® V). After 7 days, 30 days, and 90 days, color measurements were repeated, and the E of each sample was estimated. E of each sample was calculated. The Giomer group showed statistically significant higher E values than the nanohybrid resin composite where the p-value was ≤0.0001. Tea subgroup showed the highest statistically significant E values in both groups where the p-value was ≤ 0.0001. The highest statistically significant color change was recorded at 3 months. The color of bioactive restorative material is less stable if compared with nanohybrid resin composite. As tea and coffee are popular beverages, particularly in Middle Eastern nations, dentists must advise patients about the color change of resin restorations. The Evaluation of the Cervical Marginal Sealing of Direct vs. Indirect Composite Resin Restorations in MOD Cavities.

The aim of this in vitro study was to compare the quality of marginal sealing at the cervical margins of indirect and direct composite resin restorations in mesio-occluso-distal (MOD) cavities. MOD preparations were performed on 30 extracted teeth. The mesial cervical margin of each tooth was relocated using a flow composite resin (Enamel Plus HRi Flow, Micerium, Avegno, GE, Italy), then the samples were divided into three groups. In group A, the cavities were directly restored using a nanohybrid composite resin (Miris 2 Coltène Whaledent, Altstaetten, Switzerland) and a universal adhesive (ScotchBond Universal, 3M ESPE, St. Paul, MN, USA) by the etch-and-rinse strategy, for group B, the restoration procedure was similar but the self-etch strategy was used, and the samples in group C were filled using the inlay technique. Each sample was stored for 48 h in a 2% methylene blue solution, then it was cut in a mesio-distal direction using a Struers Secotom 50 device (Cleveland, OH, USA). The marginal sealing and adhesive interface were assessed for each sample at the cervical margin by optical microscopy (OM) and scanning electron microscopy (SEM). One-way ANOVA and Bonferroni post-hoc tests were used with a significance level of 0.05. Significant differences were recorded within groups A and C, between mesial and distal margins (p = 0.02 in group A and p = 0.043 in group C). The marginal sealing is more effective in MOD inlay restoration compared to direct restorations. Relocation of the cervical margin with flow composite resin and the use of different adhesive strategies do not improve the marginal sealing.

The efficacy of Er,Cr:YSGG laser and contemporary universal adhesive systems on composite resin repair bond strength: an in vitro study.

The aim of this study is to investigate the repair bond strength of composite resin following three different surface treatments (bur-grinding, silanization, and Er,Cr:YSGG laser irradiation) using various universal adhesives. A total of 160 resin composite specimens, produced in cylindrical form (6 × 2mm) with a nanohybrid composite resin within metal molds, were subjected to 5000 cycles of aging in a thermocycler. The aged samples were categorized into four groups based on surface treatments: control, bur, silane, and Er,Cr:YSGG laser. Following surface treatments, the specimens underwent repair using the same resin composite and four different adhesive systems: Tokuyama Universal Bond (TUB), Prime Bond Universal (PBU), Gluma Bond Universal (GBU), and Clearfil SE Bond (CSB). Subsequently, the specimens were subjected to shear forces, and statistical analysis was performed using two-way ANOVA and Tukey tests (p < 0.05). The failure modes were examined using a stereomicroscope, and the surface topography of the roughened resin composite was assessed through scanning electron microscopy (SEM). Results indicated that silane + GBU exhibited the highest shear bond strength (SBS) (15.61MPa) while control + TUB showed the lowest SBS (7.63MPa). Silane demonstrated significantly higher SBS values (p ≤ 0.05), with no significant difference observed between bur and laser methods (p = 0.998). It is recommended to include an additional silanization step before applying universal adhesive, as it effectively enhances the bond strength of the repaired composite.

Effect of artificial aging on the stability of color match of Omnichroma composite resin

Purpose To evaluate the effect of artificial aging on the stability of color match between the teeth and Omnichroma composite resin compared to that in the teeth restored with Tetric EvoCeram nanohybrid composite resin. Materials and methods Twenty sound, freshly extracted human maxillary premolars were mounted in acrylic blocks. The baseline shade of the selected teeth was A2 as measured from the middle third of the buccal surface by spectrophotometer (Vita Easyshade Advance). Trapezoidal Class V cavity was prepared on the buccal surface of each tooth 0.5 mm coronal to CEJ. Cavity dimensions were width of 4 mm occlusally and 3 mm gingivally, 2 mm occluso-gingival length and 1.5 mm depth. A 45-degree bevel was placed on the occlusal cavity margin. Results Specimens were randomly divided into two equal groups (n = 10) representing the materials used to restore the cavities. Group I: Tetric EvoCeram while Group II: Omnichroma. Specimens were artificially aged by storage for 6 months in artificial neutral saliva in an incubator at 37 ± 5°C during which the saliva was replaced daily. Color measurements and ΔE values were recorded before cavity preparation representing the baseline tooth color to be used for detection of the initial color match between the tooth and restoration where their color was measured after storage in saline for 24 h. Conclusion At the end of the storage period, the color of both the teeth and the restorations was remeasured to detect the stability of color match between the restoration and the tooth due to storage.

Clinical Performance and Wear Resistance of Highly Translucent Nano Zirconia Reinforced Glass Ionomer Filling Versus Conventional Resin Composite Restorations in Patients with Proximal Carious Teeth: Randomized Clinical Trial

Aim: This study aimed to evaluate the clinical performance and occlusal wear resistance of nano- zirconia reinforced glass ionomer restorations in comparison to nano-hybrid resin composite restorations in proximal cavities. Material and Method: This randomized clinical trial was conducted on thirty-two patients who had proximal carious lesions in posterior teeth. Participants were randomly allocated into two groups (n=16 for each group) in which they received either; Nano zirconia reinforced glass ionomer restorations (Zirconomer Improved, Shofu, Japan) or Conventional nano hybrid resin composite (Filtek Z250 XT, 3M ESPE, USA), all materials were applied according to manufacturers’ instructions. Restorations were evaluated at baseline (immediately), after six months, and after 12 months by two blinded assessors using modified USPHS criteria measuring (postoperative hypersensitivity, secondary caries, gross fracture, color match, cavo-surface marginal discoloration, marginal integrity, proximal contact and wear resistance). Data was analyzed using Medcalc software, intergroup comparisons between interventions was performed using the Chi-Squared test with statistical significance level set at (P ≤ 0.05) while intragroup at (P ≤ 0.016) after Bonferroni correction, relative risk was used to assess the clinical significance. Results: Intergroup comparison between both materials regarding USPHS criteria and wear resistance have shown no statistically significant difference within different follow up periods; baseline, 6 and 12 months respectively except for the color match shown significant difference with highly translucent nano zirconia reinforced GI. Intragroup comparison within highly translucent nano zirconia reinforced glass ionomer and within conventional resin composite regarding USPHS criteria have shown no statistically significant difference between different followup periods except for the wear resistance shown significant difference within highly translucent nano zirconia reinforced GI. Conclusion: Nano zirconia reinforced glass ionomer and Nano hybrid resin composite have a similar clinical performance and wear resistance after one year follow up.

Influence of Layer Thickness and Shade on the Transmission of Light through Contemporary Resin Composites.

Material-dependent parameters have an important impact on the efficiency of light polymerization. The present in vitro study aimed to investigate the influence of the increment thickness and shade of nano- and nanohybrid resin composites on the transmission of curing light. Three contemporary resin composites were evaluated: Tetric EvoCeram® (TEC); Venus Diamond® (VD); and Filtek Supreme XTE® (FS XTE). Light transmission (LT) was recorded in accordance with the sample thickness (0.5 to 2.7 mm) and the shade. Polymerized samples were irradiated for 10 s each using the high-power LED curing light Celalux 2 (1900 mW/cm2). LT was simultaneously recorded using the MARC Patient Simulator (MARC-PS). LT was strongly influenced by the composite layer thickness. For 0.5 mm-thick samples, a mean power density of 735 mW/cm2 was recorded at the bottom side. For the 2.7 mm samples, a mean power density of 107 mW/cm2 was measured. Only LT was markedly reduced in the case of darker shades. From A1 to A4, LT decreased by 39.3% for FS XTE and 50.8% for TEC. Dentin shades of FS XTE and TEC (A2, A4) showed the lowest LT. The thickness and shade of resin composite increments strongly influences the transmission of curing light. More precise information about these parameters should be included in the manufacture manual.

Effect of Simulated Gastric Juice on Color Stability of Different Artificial Teeth

Objective: The current study aimed to evaluate the gastric juice effect on the artificial teeth discoloration in patients with gastroesophageal reflux disease (GERD) under in vitro conditions.&#x0D; Methods: Three different artificial teeth (Ivostar, Vivodent PE, Phonares II) were used in the study (n=12). A spectrophotometer (VITA Easyshade Compact; VITA Zahnfabrik, Bad Säckingen, Germany) was used for initial color measurements after keeping the specimens in distilled water for 24 h. Then, they were immersed in 5% hydrochloric acid (HCl) at 37°C (pH=2) for 91 h and the color measurements were&#x0D; repeated. The CIEDE2000 formulation was used to calculate the color changes. The statistical analysis was performed with one-way ANOVA and Tukey HSD tests.&#x0D; Results: Although the color differences of Vivodent PE and Phonares II materials did not exhibit a statistically significant difference (p=.95; p &gt; .05), there was a significant difference between Ivostar and other materials (p=.02, p=.01). The 50:50% detection threshold (PT) was exceeded with Vivodent PE and Phonares II materials, while the 50:50% acceptability threshold (AT) was exceeded with Ivostar material.&#x0D; Conclusion: After exposure to gastric acid, all groups exhibited perceptible color differences. In the group of acrylic resin artificial teeth, the color difference was above acceptability threshold and would be better to improve. While the acrylic resin artificial teeth exhibited the highest discoloration, artificial teeth containing nanohybrid composite resin showed the least discoloration. These should be considered in&#x0D; the selection of artificial teeth in patients with GERD.

Performance of self-cured versus light-cured universal adhesive in patients with non-carious cervical lesions: 18-month randomized clinical trial

ObjectiveTo evaluate the clinical performance of self versus light-cured universal adhesive in non-carious cervical lesions (NCCLs) after 18 months.Materials and methodsSixty-eight NCCLs in 28 patients were divided into two equal groups; G1: self-cured universal adhesive (Palfique,Tokuyama,Japan) and G2: light-cured universal adhesive (Single Bond Universal,3 M ESPE,USA). Nanohybrid resin composite (Z350XT, 3 M ESPE, USA) was used as a final restoration. Evaluation for fracture, loss of retention, marginal adaptation and discoloration were done after 1 week, 6,12, and 18 months using FDI criteria. Postoperative sensitivity was assessed after 1 week. Chi-Square and Mann-Whitney tests with statistical significance at (P ≤ 0.05) were used for intergroup comparison,while the intragroup one was performed using the Cochran’s Q and Friedman’s tests. Survival rate was analyzed using Kaplan-meier and Log-rank test.ResultsBoth groups exhibited fracture and retention loss, however, there was statistically significant difference favoring the control group at 6 months (p = 0.0114,0.0016). For secondary outcomes, marginal adaptation and discoloration revealed no significant differences. For postoperative sensitivity, there was a significant difference favoring the control group (p = 0.0007, 0.0011). Palfique had 1.5 Relative-Risk (RR) after 6 months (95% CI 0.5659–4.2617; P = 0.3928) and 20% less risk of failure after 18 months (RR 0.8) (95% CI 0.4618–1.3858; P = 0.4260). Tested adhesives showed equal survival rate (P = 0.5685).ConclusionsBoth adhesives revealed similar clinical performance in restoring the NCCLs after 18 m, however, the early failure was more frequent in the self-cured universal adhesive.

Two-year evaluation of a nano-hybrid and a bulk-fill resin composite: a randomized, double-blind split-mouth clinical study

ObjectivesThe aim of this study was to compare the 2-year clinical performance of a bulk-fill composite resin and a nano-hybrid-filled composite resin in 6-12-year-old children in a split-mouth design.Materials and methodsThis randomized, split-mouth, and double-blind study was conducted on 89 patients aged 6–12 years with caries on bilateral mandibular first molars. In a split-mouth design, restorations of mandibular permanent molars were completed with nano-hybrid organically modified ceramic (ORMOCER)-based bulk-fill composite resin Admira Fusion x-tra (Voco GmbH, Cuxhaven, Germany) and nano-hybrid composite Grandio (Voco, Cuxhaven, Germany). Futurabond U single dose (Voco, Cuxhaven, Germany) was used with selective enamel etching. The clinical success of the restorations was evaluated using USPHS and FDI criteria at 6, 12, and 24-month follow-up controls.ResultsIn the 2-year follow-up, all restorations were clinically acceptable. Grandio was significantly worse than Admira Fusion x-tra in terms of surface luster and superficial change (p < 0.05). Surface staining and color match scores increased in Admira Fusion x-tra compared with Grandio significantly (p < 0.05).ConclusionsAlthough both materials showed acceptable clinical performance over 2 years, a significant difference was observed between the surface luster, surface staining, marginal adaptation, and staining of the nano-hybrid composite placed with the incremental technique and the bulk-fill ORMOCER-based composite resin.Clinical relevanceAs an alternative to nano-hybrid composite resins, using bulk-fill restorative materials, which can be indicated in the proper case, may contribute to shortening treatment procedures and increasing patient and physician comfort, leading to clinical success.

Optical behavior and marginal discoloration of a single shade resin composite with a chameleon effect: a randomized controlled clinical trial

Objective/aimEvaluating the optical behavior and marginal discoloration of a Single-shade universal resin composite over 12 months. To achieve this, a split-mouth with a double-blinded randomized strategy was employed.Materials and methodsTwenty adult patients, each presenting with at least two caries lesions in their posterior teeth, were selected and randomly subdivided into two identical groups: Group I received Single-shade universal resin composite (Omnichroma), and Group II received multi-shade nanohybrid resin composite (Tetric®N-Ceram). Color measurements and marginal discoloration were assessed visually by three blinded operators at baseline followed after 1,3,6,9, and 12‑month periods utilizing the Modified United States Public Health Services (USPHS) criteria. Statistical analysis was adopted utilizing the Wilcoxon test with a 0.05 significance level.ResultsThe two groups revealed non-statistically significant differences up to 6 months regarding color match and color stability. After 9 and 12 months, the multi-shade group demonstrated a statistically significant higher prevalence of color match (Alpha) scores than the single-shade universal group. Regarding marginal discoloration, all restorations in the two groups had no discoloration (Alpha scores).Discussion/conclusionSince the percentage of Alpha and Bravo scores was considered clinical success, both the single-shade universal and the multi-shade nanohybrid resin composites demonstrated satisfactory optical performance and marginal discoloration as posterior restorations after a 12-month follow-up period.

Clinical performance of a glass-hybrid system in comparison with a resin composite in two-surface class II restorations: a 5-year randomised multi-centre study

ObjectiveTo evaluate the 5-year clinical performance of a glass hybrid restorative system and a nano-hybrid resin composite in moderate to large two-surface class II cavities.Materials and methodsThis study was carried out by dental schools in Zagreb, Croatia; Izmir, Turkey; Belgrade, Serbia; and Milan, Italy. A total of 180 patients requiring two class-II two-surface restorations in the molars of the same jaw were recruited. The teeth were randomly restored with either a nano-hybrid resin composite (Tetric EvoCeram, Ivoclar Vivadent) or a glass-hybrid material (EQUIA Forte, GC). During the 5-year follow-up, two calibrated evaluators at each centre scored the restorations annually using the FDI-2 scoring system. The survival rates were calculated using the Kaplan–Meier method and compared using non-parametric matched pair tests (p < 0.05).ResultsThere were no statistically significant differences between the overall survival and success rates of the two types of restorations (p>0.05). The success rates (FDI-2 scores 1–3) for EQUIA Forte were 81.9% (average annual failure rate: 3.9%) and 90.7% for Tetric EvoCeram (average annual failure rate: 1.9%). The survival rates (FDI-2 scores 1–4) for EQUIA Forte and Tetric EvoCeram were 94.5% and 94.4%, respectively, with an average annual failure rate of 1.1%.ConclusionsIn terms of success and survival rates, both the glass-hybrid restorative system and the nano-hybrid resin composite have been shown to perform satisfactorily.Clinical relevanceThe results of this study indicate that EQUIA Forte can be one of the therapeutic options for moderate to large two-surface class II restorations of posterior teeth.

Two‑year clinical performance of indirect restorations fabricated from CAD/CAM nano hybrid composite versus lithium disilicate in mutilated vital teeth. A randomized controlled trial

Trial designThis is a randomized, controlled, superiority, double-blinded, parallel-group, two-arms trial with an allocation ratio of 1:1. The aim of this trial was to compare the two-year clinical performance of partial indirect restorations fabricated from CAD/CAM nano-hybrid composite and ceramic lithium disilicate blocks using the modified USPHS criteria.MethodsIn two parallel groups (n = 50 restorations), fifty participants having mutilated vital teeth with a minimum of two remaining walls were randomly enrolled in this trial and received indirect restorations of either nano-hybrid composite resin blocks (Brilliant, Coltene, Switzerland) or Lithium Disilicate (IPS Emax CAD). The restorations were assessed using modified USPHS criteria by two independent blinded assessors at baseline, six months, one-year and two years follow-up visits. Categorical and ordinal data were presented as frequencies and percentages. Categorical data were analyzed using the chi-square test. Ordinal data were analyzed using the Mann-Whitney U test for intergroup comparisons and Freidman’s test followed by the Nemenyi post hoc test for intragroup comparisons. Numerical data were presented as mean and standard deviation values. They were analyzed for normality using the Shapiro-Wilk test. Data were found to be normally distributed and were analyzed using the independent t-test. The significance level was set at p ≤ 0.05 within all tests.ResultsForty-eight participants received the allocated intervention and completed the follow-up periods. There was a statistically significant difference between both tested materials for all USPHS criteria regarding Marginal integrity and Marginal discoloration at six-months Follow-up, but with no statistically significant difference at one- and two-year follow-up.ConclusionsBoth materials showed an acceptable, successful clinical performance along the two-years follow-up period.Clinical relevanceThe CAD/CAM nano-hybrid composite blocks are as reliable as Lithium disilicate for restoring mutilated vital teeth.

Restoration-repair potential of resin-modified glass ionomer cement.

This in vitro study aimed to evaluate the repair bond strength of resin-modified glass ionomer cement using either the same material or a universal adhesive in the etch-and-rinse and self-etch modes plus resin composite. Twenty-four resin-modified glass ionomer cement blocks were stored in distilled water for 14 d and thermocycled. Sandpaper ground specimens were randomly assigned to three experimental groups according to the repair protocol: resin-modified glass ionomer cement (Riva Light Cure, SDI) and universal adhesive (Scotchbond Universal Adhesive, 3M Oral Care) in etch-and-rinse or self-etch modes and nanohybrid resin composite (Z350 XT, 3M Oral Care). After 24 h of water storage, the blocks were sectioned, and bonded sticks were subjected to the microtensile bond strength (μTBS) test. One-way ANOVA and Tukey's test were used to analyze the data. The failure mode was descriptively analyzed. The highest μTBS values were obtained when the resin-modified glass ionomer cement was repaired using the same material (p < 0.01). In addition, the mode of application of the universal adhesive system did not influence the repair bond strength of the resin-modified glass ionomer cement. Adhesive/mixed failures prevailed in all groups. Repair of resin-modified glass ionomers with the same material appears to be the preferred option to improve bond strength.

Nanohybrid composite resin is a dental restorative material comprising micro and nano-sized fillers. When accompanied by smoking habits, it can alter the surface roughness of composite resin. Objective: This study aimed to determine the effect of several electric cigarette (e-cigarette) puffs on the surface roughness of nanohybrid composite resin. Methods: This study was conducted in the experimental laboratory with a pretest-posttest control group design using 48 nanohybrid composite resin specimens divided into six groups. Subsequently, the experimental groups were exposed to 75, 150, 225, 300, and 450 puffs of e-cigarette, and the control group was given artificial saliva immersion without exposure for 21 days. The surface roughness of specimens was measured with a surface roughness tester and evaluated through statistical analysis, including One-Way ANOVA and Post-Hoc LSD. Results: The average pre-test and post-test differences between groups I, II, III, IV, V, and VI were 0.013, 0.022, 0.033, 0.044, 0.065, and 0.005 μm. These results showed a significant difference in the surface roughness of nanohybrid composite resin (p &lt; 0.05), with variations between all groups. Conclusion: This study showed that the number of e-cigarette puffs had a significant effect on the surface roughness of nanohybrid composite resin. Specifically, an increase in the number of e-cigarette puffs led to a rise in the surface roughness value of nanohybrid composite resin.
