Law and Lawlessness in Yorubá Society - A Critical Analysis of Ààrẹ Àgò Aríkúyẹrí and Adákẹ́dájọ́

This essay is centered on the comparative analysis of the justice system in traditional and modern Yorùbá society vis-à-vis equality of rule to law to all and sundry. This paper aims to analyze the effects of an upright as well as a corrupt judicial system on society. The theory adopted for this work is the sociological theory of literature. The model adopted under this theory is the mirror image approach. Proponents of this model believe there is a cordial relationship between literature and society because literature mirrors society. We employ an auto-telic textual analysis approach in our analysis of the two play texts, which are Ààrẹ Àgò Aríkúyẹrí and Adákẹ́dájọ́. Our findings in this work show that equality of all and sundry in justice dispensation will bring about peace, tranquility, and development in society why inequality as well as lack of equity, justice, and fairness as seen in the two texts breed lawlessness, anarchy and resort to self-help by those deprived of justice which will, in turn, brings about loss of life and properties as we are witnessing in Nigeria today. Based on our findings in this work, we believe that the solution to this problem is to follow the rule of law which should be above everybody, and to inculcate moral discipline (ìwà ọmọlúàbí) which is the watchword of the traditional Yoruba society in children through both formal and informal education by teachers, parents, and guardians.

In the difficult circumstances of modern life, due to the conditions of martial law in Ukraine, the staff of the Ivano-Frankivsk Academy of St. John Chrysostom continued to combine scientific and educational work, practical activities and liturgical life at the beginning of the 2023/2024 academic year, aimed at forming a young generation of theological specialists, primarily future priests and teachers of spiritual and moral disciplines, as well as nurturing the scientific and cultural heritage of the Ukrainian nation.

Bridging the Gap Between Sīla and Samādhi: The Role of Mindfulness in Pre-Meditative Practice

This article explores the dynamic aspect of sīla, which entails divergent constructions of the moral practice in the schemes of the path in the Pāli canonical and post-canonical texts. In early Buddhist tradition, sīla is usually defined as the moral discipline consisting of three factors of the Eightfold Path (Right Speech, Right Action, and Right Livelihood), corresponding with varied lists of precepts applied to different agents. In addition to that partial understanding, this paper aspires to enrich the concept of sīla that goes beyond mere observance of precepts and includes practices related to the extended category of mindfulness. In the advanced stages of the path, mindfulness is usually incorporated with samādhi (concentration) to access deep meditative states. Nonetheless, the different interpretations of the path imply that some features of mindfulness practice have an active role in the prior mental dimension of moral development. Practices such as sati-sampajañña (mindfulness and clear comprehension), bhojane mattaññū (moderation in eating), jāgariyā (wakefulness), and santosa (contentment) all precede formal meditative development. However, they are included under the wide framework of mindfulness. Although these practices are not identified as ethical per se, they play a vital role in the practice of sīla and provide the necessary conditions for advanced mental development in formal meditative practice. As a result of these findings, this paper aspires to expand the notion of sīla as an integrated stage that combines bodily, verbal, and mental development, which comprises the pre-meditative practice.

ABSTRACTAll humans certainly need education for their survival, because all aspects of life will require insight gained from education. The existence of education can guarantee the development and survival of the Indonesian nation. Therefore, the commitment and responsibility of those responsible for education must be increased. And it is no less important that a person's position can determine the success of the educational institution he leads, especially in relation to the role of the school principal and the teacher council and parents in ensuring the smooth running of the teaching and learning process.This research aims to: 1) Find out the synergy of PAI teachers and parents in cultivating students' morals at Asy-Syifa Darussalam Abung Jayo Middle School, North Lampung; 2) Knowing the supporting and inhibiting factors for the synergy of Islamic Religious Education Teachers and parents in cultivating students' morals at Asy-Syifa Darussalam Abung Jayo Middle School, North Lampung. This type of research is descriptive qualitative where the results of data obtained in the field are explained in the form of sentence descriptions, with the research object being Islamic Religious Education teachers and parents, as well as students at Asy-Syifa Darussalam Abung Jayo Middle School, North Lampung. In collecting data, three methods were used, namely interviews and observation as the main method, then documentation as a supporting method to complete the data that the researcher did not obtain through interviews and observation.The results of this research show that; 1) The synergy of teachers and parents in instilling moral discipline and politeness in students at Asy-Syifa Darussalam Abung Jayo Middle School, namely through Tahfidz activities and discipline sheets. In the discipline sheet there are two discipline values, the first is discipline at home and discipline at school; 2) Factors that influence the synergy of PAI teachers and parents in instilling the morals of students at Asy-Syifa Darussalam Abung Jayo Middle School, North Lampung. There are two influencing factors, namely: a) Supporting factors for the synergy of PAI teachers and parents in instilling the morals of participants. students at Asy-Syifa Darussalam Abung Jayo Middle School, North Lampung, namely Consistency in Education, Attitude of parents in the family, Understanding and practicing the religion they adhere to, Consistent attitude of parents in implementing norms. family factor, if the family factor understands religion and educates their children well and instills good moral values then it will be easy for teachers to instill good morals and as parents the same goes for parents; b) The inhibiting factor is from the parents themselves, by educating them by giving a good example, the child will easily be instilled with good morals, the second is the environment, if the environment is good then the child will more easily be instilled with good values, habits, such as if he makes a mistake in advise but just stay silent and sulk.. Organization philosophy: a study of organizational goodness in the age of human and artificial intelligence collaboration

AbstractThis study challenges the conventional boundaries of philosophy by asserting that organizations can function as legitimate subjects within philosophical discourse. Western philosophy, epitomized by Descartes, has long assumed that individual human beings are the fundamental units of thought and moral agency. However, in a significant oversight, this belief overlooks the idea that organizations can think independently, leading to both virtuous and malevolent results. Epistemology lacks a clear prioritization of morally sound knowledge over potentially harmful knowledge. The advent of artificial intelligence (AI) has also transformed the landscape of cognition from a primarily individual human endeavor into a joint undertaking where humans collaborate with AI entities in collective thinking and decision-making. Nevertheless, AI lacks the innate ability to discern between ethical and unethical actions. This symbiosis creates organizations as fundamental philosophical subjects, marking a significant shift in philosophical emphasis where the organization takes the center stage. Accordingly, within this emerging field, we advance four propositions as the core subjects of organization philosophy: organizations can think, organizations can create knowledge, AI can be part of an organization, and humans in the organization control moral discipline. These propositions guide the ethical coexistence of AI and human agents in organizations, emphasizing the importance of ethical deliberation in knowledge use. Moreover, the malicious use of profound knowledge hinders human progress, as illustrated in this study by an ethical examination of military institutions within organization philosophy.

On Freedom from Remorse (Avipratisāra/Avippaṭisāra): Its Place on the Well-Trodden Path from Moral Discipline to Samādhi Meditation

The primary objective of this study is to shed light on the role and significance of freedom from remorse (avipratisāra/avippaṭisāra) in the cultivation of Buddhist concentration (samādhi) meditation. The study delves into the progression from avipratisāra/avippaṭisāra to samādhi, examining how moral discipline influences an individual’s conscience and, consequently, meditation. We commence by examining the well-established path of cultivation leading toward samādhi. A comprehensive study was undertaken to understand the term avipratisāra/avippaṭisāra, its significance for Buddhist meditation, the context in which it originated, and the various English translations that have been provided for it. Furthermore, a comparison is made between avipratisāra/avippaṭisāra and a seemingly synonymous term, kaukṛtya/kukkucca, with areas being sought where one or the other tends to be (or is exclusively) used within the discourse about Buddhist ethics and meditation. From various Buddhist scriptures, it is suggested that a morally disciplined individual typically progresses through a series of states, starting with freedom from remorse and potentially leading to concentration (samādhi). Avipratisāra/avippaṭisāra is pivotal in fostering positive meditative states, serving as a catalyst that propels individuals from negative emotions to wholesome ones on the Buddhist path. By contrast, both vipratisāra/vippaṭisāra and kaukṛtya/kukkucca are identified as basically synonymous words for disturbing emotions with somewhat different contexts of use, the elimination of such emotions being necessary if individuals are to progress on their spiritual journey. Avipratisāra/avippaṭisāra plays a crucial intermediary role bridging Buddhist ethics and meditation. Moral discipline and the subsequent understanding and confession of any personal misconduct are integral to fostering freedom from remorse. Such freedom not only paves the way to deeper meditation but also fortifies one’s confidence in Buddhist teachings, and so provides a foundation for true spiritual progress.

AbstractThe phenomenon that is often seen related to character is the real evidence that there is a contradiction between the behavior of educated people and the behavior that should be displayed. The actions of educated people even show bad morals. The morals they display are not by the basic objectives of national education. This means that there is a contradiction between the results and the goals that national education aims to achieve. This type of research uses field research, located at MTs Negeri 1 Hulu Sungai Selatan, the subjects in this study were the head of the madrasah and educators, instruments and data collection techniques using observation, interviews, and documentation techniques, and data analysis techniques in this study using qualitative descriptive analysis. The three strategies carried out by schools are caring attitudes that are developed not limited to the classroom, familiarizing good morals in the school environment, and synergizing with parents and the community. The strategies carried out by educators are educators as role models, creating moral communities in the classroom, implementing moral discipline, and encouraging moral reflection. The character values instilled are the characteristics of environmental care, hard work, religion, creativity, national spirit, respect for achievement, and honest character.So, it can be concluded that there are four character internalization strategies carried out by educators, and three strategies carried out by schools. The internalized character values are the characteristics of environment Awareness, hard work, religious, creative, patriotic, appreciate to the achievement, and honest.

Mediating Role of Cultural Values in the Impact of Ethical Ideologies on Chinese Consumers’ Ethical Judgments

AbstractThis paper develops and tests a new conceptual model incorporating the indirect impact of two ethical ideologies (idealism and relativism) on Chinese consumers’ ethical judgments under four ethically problematic consumption situations (active benefit, passive benefit, deceptive practice, and no/indirect harm) through two cultural values (integration and moral discipline). Data from a large-scale online consumer survey in five major Chinese cities (N = 1046) support most hypotheses. The findings are consistent with the postulated global impact of ethical ideology on forming an individual’s beliefs and values and highlight the importance of a thorough understanding of the significant determinants of consumer ethics to promote ethically responsible consumption behaviors. This study also uses an emic approach to conceptualize and measure Chinese cultural values by using cultural constructs and measures that are designed explicitly in the Chinese context.

Instructing the Young and Comforting the Aged in the Norwich and Norfolk Institution for the Indigent Blind, ca. 1805–55

AbstractThis article considers the ways that Enlightenment ideas and practices shaped the founding of the Norwich and Norfolk Institution for the Indigent Blind, and then analyzes the disparate approaches to the aged versus the working-age blind in its first half-century (ca. 1805–55). While we see change over time, we also find distinctive continuity in the ongoing close connections inmates kept with Norwich civic life and family and friends; this was emphatically not a closed asylum. The institution demonstrated consistent commitment to helping its pupils towards self-sufficiency, with optimism about what the blind could (literally) turn their hands to. Nonetheless, the Norwich Institution was disciplinary, actively seeking to produce docile, productive bodies among its blind pupils, both through education and through work habits. Time, labor, and moral discipline increased for pupils over the course of its first half-century, and girls and women were pushed into less economically rewarding work practices. Equally important, while it had an unwavering, humanitarian commitment to providing for the aged blind, its insistent characterization of these inmates as helpless and pitiable limited the potential of the institution to facilitate the well-being of its older residents.

Housing as a Stimulus to Students’ Academic Deliverables: A Study of Federal University of Technology, Akure

Learning environment has been a topical issue over years, most especially with rise in student population due to increasing interest in the higher institutions of learning over the years. No doubt, the existing housing facilities around higher institutions of learning in Nigeria have been stretched to overcrowding, poor maintenance culture sometimes to obsolescence. This exerts negative impact on learning outcomes as well as the overall performance of the students. The broad objective of this paper is to investigate how housing stimulates students’ academic deliverables in Nigerian higher institutions of learning with special reference to Federal University of Technology, Akure, Ondo State. And the specific objectives are to examine the background information of the study area; examine the housing characteristics in the study area; examine the effects of housing on moral discipline of the students in the study area; determine the link between students’ housing condition and their academic deliverables. Questionnaires were used to collect information from student populace and data were analyzed qualitatively and quantitatively. The study revealed that there is significant relationship between housing condition and students’ performance, poor housing condition affect the academic deliverables of student of the study area adversely.

Character Education Strategy In Improving Student Discipline At Islamic State University Higher Education Mahmud Yunus Batusangkar

The vulnerability of knowledge about discipline in the world of education today is the result of a lack of respect for others. Therefore, it is necessary to instill character education to make improvements in students so that it becomes a form of disciplined assessment of character formation in the educational environment. The role of character improvement in education is the aim of the author's research to analyze the extent to which character is implemented as a form of improving moral discipline among Islamic State University Higher Education Mahmud Yunus Batusangkar students. This research is a type of qualitative descriptive research with data collection taken from field observations carried out by researchers regarding the 3 option assessments observed and interview techniques. From the results of the research, it was found that the application of the options observed was able to provide increased discipline in students. The results of this observation were also supported by an interview process which provided views on whether the application of student character was able to instill discipline towards others. Therefore, the conclusion in this research is that it is able to provide an allocation if Islamic State University Higher Education Mahmud Yunus Batusangkar students have implemented maximum character education, thereby creating students who have moral character and high discipline

Upaya Guru dalam Menanamkan Pendidikan Karakter Peduli Lingkungan Pada Siswa Kelas 4 di MI Hidayatul Mubtadi’in 1 Cibeber

Character education is an attitude and action that always tries to prevent damage to the surrounding natural environment, and develops efforts to repair the damage to nature that has already occurred. The problem in this study is that even though environmental care activities have been implemented, there is still a lack of student interest in caring for the environment resulting in students becoming less responsible and disciplined. This study aims to describe the efforts of teachers in instilling environmental care character education at Madrasah Ibtidaiyah Hidayatul Mubtadi'in 1 Cibeber. The subjects of this study were grade 4 students at the Hidayatul Mubtadi'in 1 Cibeber Elementary School, Sukagumiwang District, Indramayu Regency. The object of this research is character education that cares for the environment. Data collection techniques using observation techniques, interviews and documentation. The results of research through observation and interviews show that grade 4 students' environmental awareness has shown concern for the school environment and maintaining personal hygiene. This can be seen from the state of the class and school which is clean and tidy. Here it is clear that students' concern for the environment can influence the moral formation of students, especially moral discipline and responsibility in protecting and caring for the environment. Obstacles faced by teachers in instilling environmental care character education for grade 4 students at MI Hidayatul Mubtadi'in 1 Cibeber School are student habits and exemplary behavior. This can be seen from the fact that there are still some students who do not care about the school environment. Obstacles related to student habits are that students still have to be reminded by the teacher in their implementation. The obstacle related to exemplary is that the teacher has not provided exemplary thoroughly to students, both time, place and situation.

Stoicyzm wobec psychologicznych i pedagogicznych uwarunkowań procesu wychowania

The first part of the article deals with the philosophy of stoicism. This philosophy referred to such factors as: a) being guided by reason; b) moral discipline; c) spiritual balance and cutting off emotions from external events. The cult of nature was of great importance in the teaching of the Stoics. In the metaphysical dimension, the Stoics preached the thesis that the whole world consists of only one element, i.e. matter. Another dimension of Stoicism was logic. In its history, Stoicism had three significant schools: a) the old stoa of Zeno of Kition; b) the middle stoa, whose representative was Cleanthes and then his student Chrysippus of Sołoj; c) the younger stoa with such representatives as: Aenneas Seneca, Epictetus and Emperor Marcus Aurelius. The second part of the article refers to the specificity of upbringing. The direction of educational development assumes three possibilities: a) upward development; b) sustained development; c) downward development. There are four groups of definitions of upbringing: a) praxeological; b) evolutionary; c) situational; d) adaptive. There is also an involutional or entropic, reverse direction. Different types of education are also mentioned. The path of good upbringing gives a person a sense of happiness. The Stoics stress the importance of self-education. According to this direction, man has a social nature. The fruit of education should be a perfect man. The Stoics emphasized the importance of thinking and its discipline. The ultimate effect of education is not only knowledge but also wisdom. Key words: goodness, harmony with nature, meaning of life, stoicism, happiness, upbringing.

The Differentiation and Analysis of Relationship between “Ethics” and “Morality” in the Chinese Context

In both Western and Chinese contexts, “ethics” and “morality” have always been confused by semantics and blurred boundaries, and “ethics and morality” or “morality and ethics” are often confused with each other. This situation has brought a lot of inconvenience to academic research. Although there have been many research results on the relationship between their, there is no general consensus, and it is necessary to re-analyze and summarize them. In summary, there are three types of research on the relationship between ethics and morality in recent years in Chinese academia: synonymous, heterogeneous, species and genera. Clarifying the relationship between ethics and morality can effectively prevent the tendency of ethical moralism and moral ethicism, help clarify the issue of attribution of ethics and moral disciplines, and at the same time help rebuild the moral beliefs of contemporary people.

Based on Law Number 11 of 2012 concerning the Juvenile Criminal Justice System (SPPA) inarticle 1 paragraph 2 it is stated that a child in conflict with the law is a child who is 12 (twelve) yearsold, but not yet 18 (eighteen) years old who is undergoing treatment. his criminal period at The SpecialChild Development Institution. The issue of violations committed by children in conflict with the law at TheSpecial Child Development Institution. is nothing new, while the types of disciplinary violations can bedivided into 7 (seven) categories, namely: Legal Discipline, Moral Discipline, Environmental Discipline,Discipline of Goods and Equipment, Discipline of Ethics and Courtesy of Association, Discipline of MoneyCirculation and Discipline of Service. The implementation of guidance for Children in Conflict with theLaw who violates discipline is aimed at building positive behavior for children, protecting the safety of children, officers and the community. The coaching atmosphere that is carried out is directed at a model that encourages positive behavior, and does not only focus on the application of sanctions asa consequenceof negative behavior. The main factors found as obstacles in the implementation of guidance for Childrenin Conflict with the Law at The Special Child Development Institution Class II Karangasem are limitedfacilities & infrastructure, as well as efforts that have been made to minimize these obstacles, namelysubmitting a budget for the procurement of facilities &infrastructure and collaborating with relevantagencies.

Morality is very important for human life. In the modern era like today, there have been various advances in all aspects of human life, but some of these advances have not been accompanied by progress in human morality. So it is known that most educational figures, especially two figures who offer ideas about moral education such as Al-Ghazali and Emile Durkheim. There are 3 foundations put forward by Durkheim to become a moral human being, namely discipline, group attachment, and autonomy. Everyone must have these three factors to become a moral individual. Moral education is a way of teaching someone to behave well so that they become good people and are accepted in social life. Through society, moral education can be grown in a person, especially in the growth and development of a child. Morality plays the most important role, because morality in all its forms can only exist in society. In addition, morality is not born from individuals but from society and is a symptom of society. The existence of moral discipline not only supports moral life itself, but has a wider impact. Meditation as a Path to Inner Calm in the Life of Buddhists

The purpose of this research is to find out how to prepare, the form of implementation in Theravada Buddhist meditation, and the most important thing about this research is to find out the psychological condition of Theravada Buddhists who have practiced meditation regularly and correctly. This study uses a qualitative descriptive method, namely research that is directed to conditions and facts that occur in a systematic and accurate manner regarding research and analyzes the truth of these facts based on the data obtained. Data collection techniques in this study used observation techniques, interviews, and a literature study. The discussion is through analysis of the results of observations and interviews. Based on the analysis of the literature and interviews with several sources, Buddhism is teaching contains a lot of ways of life, especially about morality. Meditation, which is one of the teachings of Buddhism, is a path to the final attainment of releasing suffering, and meditation has many benefits for the lives of Buddhists themselves because meditation provides inner peace for those who do it. This meditation requires preparation, such as carrying out moral discipline and also self-control, so that in carrying out this meditation, a person will be able to concentrate. And in the form of practice, this meditation is done by sitting, lying down, standing, and walking. Meditation for Theravada Buddhists is something that must be done in order to attain Nibbana. Followers who regularly meditate will make themselves calm, able to face problems with a cool mind, and most importantly, meditation can also make a person calm by cleaning dirty thoughts from within, where dirty thoughts tend to be negative, and being able to place a position on the present life, not stuck in the past and not expecting a future that has not yet happened. Apart from that, meditation is not only a religious activity, but meditation is also a tool for healing various diseases, which many non-Buddhists can use because they have faith in using this meditation and using the chosen object. This way, our mind will be focused, and mind will not go wild, giving us peace of mind.

Development of moral and psychological stability of youth through the use of music in the process of teaching spiritual and moral disciplines

The article gives a brief overview of the use of music as an innovative teaching method in the teaching of spiritual and moral disciplines on the example of the Department of Theology of the Don State Technical University. Possibilities of one of effective means of formation of spiritual culture through musical art are considered. The analysis of the effective experience of the use of musical innovative methods and forms of training is carried out. Since 2020 the project "Classical music and spirituality" began to be realized, which is aimed at the spiritual and moral education of students through familiarization with the works of classical music art and culture (holding gala concerts, participation and organization of competitions, musical lectures, evenings of Russian romance, author and project manager Andrei Alexandrovich Mekushkin, the head of the DSTU Theology Department). In addition, since 2020, the introduction and use of innovative forms of learning, including music as a means of emotional harmonization, stabilization of psychological stability, education and formation of spiritual culture in the process of teaching disciplines of spiritual and moral orientation "Fundamentals of Morality" (teacher of DSTU Theology Department Olga Nikolaevna Enina).
