Two new coordination polymers (CPs) with formulas [Co2(OH)(bb)2.5(HCOO)3(H2O)]n (1), and [Cd4(bb)5(HCOO)8]n (2) (bb = 4,4-bis(imidazolyl) biphenyl), have been synthesized and characterized. In 1, Co1 and Co2 are bridged with µ2-formato-syn-syn mode (syn-syn bidentate bridging) and µ1-η1-formato mode (monodentate bridging). In 2, Cd1 and Cd2 are bridged with µ2-formato-syn-syn mode (syn-syn bidentate bridging). CPs 1 and 2 are semiconducting nature. The photocatalytic degradation properties of the two CPs are investigated. Significantly, CP 2 is a good photocatalyst for the degradation of methyl blue (MB). Moreover, the possible photodegradation mechanism was proposed and explored. The active species involved in the degradation of MB has been assessed using trapping experiments.
