Bidirectional DC-DC Converter and Improved Electrical Vehicle Dynamic Response Control

Background: In automotive applications where bidirectional power flow is necessary to lighten the power system, dual active bridge (DAB) converters are frequently employed. Variations in the required output voltage, erratic input voltage, and shifting loads all have an impact on this converter. As a result, converter performance has to be improved. To increase efficiency, the current stress of the DC-DC converter must be optimised. This paper proposes a control scheme for the coupled inductor bidirectional DC-DC (CIB DC-DC) converter utilising both model predictive control (MPC) and a proportional-integral (PI) controller. The integration of these control techniques aims to enhance the performance and efficiency of the converter. Methods: The MPC algorithm is employed to predict the converter's future behaviour based on a dynamic model, taking into account system constraints and performance criteria. By optimising the control action over a finite time horizon, the MPC algorithm ensures an optimal response, considering the current state and anticipated changes. Additionally, a PI controller is incorporated to augment the control strategy. The proportional component of the PI controller enables a fast initial response to the error between the desired and actual converter outputs. The integral component eliminates steady-state errors and provides robustness against disturbances, resulting in improved overall system performance. Results: The proposed control scheme is implemented and evaluated through simulations and experimental tests on a prototype converter. The results demonstrate the effectiveness of the combined MPC and PI controller approach. Conclusion: The coupled inductor bidirectional DC-DC (CIB DC-DC) converter using MPC can provide precise control of power flow between two voltage domains, enabling efficient bidirectional power transfer. The predictive capabilities of MPC allow it to adapt to varying load conditions and respond quickly to changes, ensuring stable operation and accurate regulation of voltage and current. Overall, the coupled inductor bidirectional DC-DC converter controlled using MPC over PI offers improved performance, efficiency, and flexibility compared to traditional control methods. MPC can handle the complex dynamics response and non-linear characteristics of the converter, making it suitable for bi-directional vehicle charging applications, where precise control and high efficiency can be achieved.

Innovative model predictive control for HVDC: circulating current mitigation and fault resilience in Modular Multilevel converters

This study presents an advanced Model Predictive Control (MPC) technique designed to mitigate Circulating Current (CC) in HVDC systems equipped with Modular Multilevel Converters (MMC). This MPC strategy eliminates the need for traditional PI regulators and pulse width modulation, improving system dynamics and control accuracy. It excels in managing output currents and mitigating voltage fluctuations in sub-module capacitors. Moreover, the paper introduces a novel communication-free Fault Ride-Through (FRT) method that makes a DC chopper redundant, enabling rapid recovery from disturbances. To reduce the computational burden of standard MPC algorithms, an aggregated MMC model is proposed, significantly decreasing the computational complexity. Simulation studies validate the new MPC algorithm’s capability in regulating AC side current, reducing CC, and ensuring capacitor voltage stability under varying conditions. The findings indicate that the proposed MPC controller outperforms traditional PI and PR-based methods, offering enhanced dynamic response, decreased steady-state error, and lowered converter losses, which contribute to smoother DC link voltages. Future research will focus on system scalability, renewable energy integration, and empirical validation through hardware-in-the-loop testing.

Offset-Free Koopman Model Predictive Control of Thermal Comfort Regulation for a Variable Refrigerant Flow-Dedicated Outdoor Air System-Combined System

Abstract Variable refrigerant flow (VRF) system has been an appealing solution of air conditioning for residential and commercial buildings, due to its flexibility and cost effectiveness, while lack of ventilation capability is a major drawback. Incorporation of dedicated outdoor air system (DOAS) is a typical practice. However, good coordination between DOAS and VRF is critical for achieving desired thermal comfort is challenging due to the possible complexity of mixed sensible and latent heat exchanges. In this paper, to handle the nonlinear dynamic characteristics of VRF-DOAS system, we propose an offset-free Koopman model predictive control (MPC) strategy for thermal comfort regulation, in which the MPC design is computationally more efficient due to the convex problem formulation and the use of reduced-order Koopman models, and the offset-free MPC structure enhances the robustness to model uncertainties and unmeasured disturbances. A control-oriented model is obtained by hybridizing the first-principle and data-driven modeling approach. The proposed controls strategy is evaluated with a Modelica simulation model of a VRF-DOAS system. A Dymola-Python cosimulation platform is developed via the functional mockup interface (FMI), for which the MPC algorithms are implemented in Python. Simulation results show significantly better performance of the offset-free Koopman MPC in thermal comfort regulation.

Prediction of residual performance of corroded RC beams from observed surface cracks by 3D RBSM with MPC

Corrosion of reinforcing steel in concrete structures can significantly compromise their performance. Accurately estimating this deterioration for in-service structures is challenging due to uncertainties surrounding the distribution of internal corrosion and cracking patterns, compounded by the limitations of destructive testing. This research proposes a novel approach to predict the remaining load-bearing capacity of corroded reinforced concrete (RC) structures based on the pattern of surface cracks caused by corrosion. The method integrates a model predictive control (MPC) algorithm with a three-dimensional Rigid Body Spring Model (3D RBSM) to estimate internal corrosion levels from observed cracks and a normal 3D RBSM simulation to predict the residual performance. The proposed system is validated through analysis of four corroded beam specimens based on experimental work reported in the literature. In use, the MPC algorithm first estimates a corrosion distribution in a RC beam and generates simultaneous corrosion-induced crack and stress predictions. This information is then used to predict residual load-bearing capacity. The system accurately forecasts the non-uniform corrosion distribution, flexural capacity, and load-displacement curves of a specimen, offering insight into the performance differences among the specimens and demonstrating its potential to assess the serviceability of existing RC structures with corrosion issues.

Sensorless Model Predictive Control of Permanent Magnet Synchronous Motors Using an Unscented Kalman Filter

This paper deals with the application of the Model Predictive Control (MPC) algorithm to the sensorless control of a Permanent Magnet Synchronous Motor (PMSM). The proposed estimation strategy, based on the unscented Kalman filter (UKF), uses only the measurement of the motor current for the online estimation of speed, rotor position and load torque. Information about the system state is fed into the MPC algorithm. The results verify the effectiveness and applicability of the proposed sensorless control technique. To demonstrate its real-world applicability, implementation in low-speed direct drive astronomy telescope mount systems is investigated. The outcomes of the implementation are thoroughly examined, leading to insightful conclusions drawn from the observed results. Through rigorous theoretical analysis and extensive simulation studies, this paper establishes a solid foundation for the proposed sensorless control technique. The results obtained from simulation studies and real-world applications underscore the efficacy and versatility of the proposed approach, offering valuable insights for the advancement of sensorless control strategies in motor applications. The main aim of this work is to demonstrate and validate the practical feasibility of combining two complex techniques, establishing that such an integration is not only possible but also effective in achieving the desired objectives.

Energy Management of Hydrogen Hybrid Electric Vehicles—Online-Capable Control

The results shown in this paper extend our research group’s previous work, which presents the theoretically achievable hydrogen engine-out NO​xeo (H​2-NO​xeo) Pareto front of a hydrogen hybrid electric vehicle (H​2-HEV). While the Pareto front is calculated offline, which requires significant computing power and time, this work presents an online-capable algorithm to tackle the energy management of a H​2-HEV with explicit consideration of the H​2-NO​xeo trade-off. Through the inclusion of realistic predictive data on the upcoming driving mission, a model predictive control algorithm (MPC) is utilized to effectively tackle the conflicting goal of achieving low hydrogen consumption while simultaneously minimizing NO​xeo. In a case study, it is shown that MPC is able to satisfy user-defined NO​xeo limits over the course of various driving missions. Moreover, a comparison with the optimal Pareto front highlights MPC’s ability to achieve close-to-optimal fuel performance for any desired cumulated NO​xeo target on four realistic routes for passenger cars.

An accurate trajectory tracking method for low-speed unmanned vehicles based on model predictive control

Trajectory tracking on a low-speed vehicle using the model predictive control (MPC) algorithm usually assumes a simple road terrain. This assumption does not correspond to the actual road situation, leading to low tracking accuracy. Therefore, a trajectory tracking method considering road curvature based on MPC is proposed in this paper. In this method, the controller can automatically switch between MPC types. Linear model predictive control (LMPC) is selected for small road curvatures, while nonlinear model predictive control (NMPC) is employed for large road curvatures. In addition, the NMPC algorithm in this work considers the effect of road curvature on tracking accuracy, making it suitable for tracking time-varying curvature roads. To verify the feasibility of the algorithm, simulation comparisons with the basic MPC model were carried out at different testing roads and vehicle longitudinal speeds. The results indicate that the method significantly improves trajectory tracking accuracy, all while ensuring real-time calculations. The intelligent switching capability of control models based on road curvature allows its application to track trajectories on arbitrarily complex roads.

Model predictive control (MPC) applied to a simplified model, magnetic nanoparticle hyperthermia (MNPH) treatment process

Magnetic nanoparticle hyperthermia (MNPH) has emerged as a promising cancer treatment that complements conventional ionizing radiation and chemotherapy. MNPH involves injecting iron-oxide nanoparticles into the tumor and exposing it to an alternating magnetic field (AMF). Iron oxide nanoparticles produce heat when exposed to radiofrequency AMF due to hysteresis loss. Minimizing the non-specific heating in human tissues caused by exposure to AMF is crucial. A pulse-width-modulated AMF has been shown to minimize eddy-current heating in superficial tissues. This project developed a control strategy based on a simplified mathematical model in MATLAB SIMULINK® to minimize eddy current heating while maintaining a therapeutic temperature in the tumor. A minimum tumor temperature of 43 [°C] is required for at least 30 [min] for effective hyperthermia, while maintaining the surrounding healthy tissues below 39 [°C]. A model predictive control (MPC) algorithm was used to reach the target temperature within approximately 100 [s]. As a constrained MPC approach, a maximum AMF amplitude of 36 [kA/m] and increment of 5 [kA/m/s] were applied. MPC utilized the AMF amplitude as an input and incorporated the open-loop response of the eddy current heating in its dynamic matrix. A conventional proportional integral (PI) controller was implemented and compared with the MPC performance. The results showed that MPC had a faster response (30 [s]) with minimal overshoot (1.4 [%]) than PI controller (115 [s] and 5.7 [%]) response. In addition, the MPC method performed better than the structured PI controller in its ability to handle constraints and changes in process parameters.

Gradient projection-based trajectory tracking control for automatic guided vehicle

In order to solve the problems of long operation time for solving the trajectory tracking controller and low real-time tracking. This paper proposes an improved model predictive control algorithm. By introducing the gradient projection method (GPM), the projection direction is used as the fastest descent direction of the objective function, which is used to reduce the number of iterations of the operation. Meanwhile, this paper adds constraints and relaxation factors to improve the trajectory tracking accuracy and prevent the controller operations from falling into local optimal solutions. Simulation by Simulink, the improved model predictive control algorithm reduces the average operation time by 24.74% and the single maximum operation time by 36.04%, effectively improving the real-time trajectory tracking performance. Finally, the verification experiment of trajectory tracking control is carried out by actual vehicle, proving the method’s effectiveness.

Design and Experimental Study of an Embedded Controller for a Model-Based Controllable Pitch Propeller

The controllable pitch propeller hydraulic system has high constraints and nonlinearity. Due to these inherent deficiencies, the proportional–integral–derivative (PID) control algorithm cannot meet the control accuracy requirements of nonlinear systems. A control law based on a model predictive control (MPC) algorithm is designed in this paper. The gain parameters of the predictive control are optimized. The MPC and PID control systems are compared and simulated to verify the MPC controller’s effectiveness. Subsequently, the embedded controller of a controllable pitch propeller is developed. The support package for the embedded circuit board target containing an underlying driver for each interface is written by introducing the C-MEX S-Function and TLC programming language. A semi-physical simulation experiment is performed. The results show that the established controllable pitch propeller with an embedded controller displays reliable running performance, good anti-interference, and the capacity to fulfill the control function of the pitch propeller under various working conditions.

A collision-avoidance decision-making scheme based on artificial potential fields and event-triggered control

In this paper, a collision-avoidance decision-making scheme is proposed based on improved artificial potential field (APF) and event-triggered nonlinear model predictive control. A calculation model is used to calculate the collision avoidance dynamic parameters between ships. In accordance with relevant rules of the International Regulations for Preventing Collisions at Sea (COLREGs), abovementioned collision avoidance parameters are used as the main index and applied to construct the repulsive potential field. Then, an anti-collision decision-making scheme is developed by incorporating event-triggered mechanism and improved APF method into the nonlinear model predictive control algorithm. Based on improved repulsive potential field, heading of the ship and orientation of the target point, the event-triggered conditions are set to save considerable computational resources. Following this approach, optimal collision avoidance actions in line with COLREGs is realised, and the adverse effects of ignoring the manoeuvrability characteristics of ships in the process of preventing collisions are eliminated. Finally, simulation examples verify the effectiveness and rationality of the proposed scheme for multi-ship encounter scenarios.

Current control for a supercapacitor-based battery equalization system

This paper presents a novel supercapacitor-based energy equalization system and discusses a new equalization current control method. The proposed battery equalization system is composed of a bidirectional boost–buck circuit, a switch matrix, and a supercapacitor, which can realize stable electric current transmission between batteries and supercapacitors. The buck or boost mode of the circuit is triggered automatically based on the threshold of the voltage drop between the battery and the supercapacitor. A modified control logic of the metal-oxide-semiconductor field-effect transistor is proposed to improve the efficiency of the circuit, and a model predictive control (MPC) algorithm is designed to track the target current. Simulation results indicate that for a conventional electric current transmitting circuit, the current fluctuates violently under a fixed pulse width modulation duty. In contrast, the proposed supercapacitor-based energy equalization system tracks the target current well under the control of the MPC controller. In a wide operating range, the transmission efficiency of the new energy equalization system with the modified control logic is 13.0% higher than that of the conventional electric current transmitting circuit with the original control logic.

Comparative Study of Performance Metrics for Smart Inverter Control in Solar PV-Based EV Charging Stations

Photovoltaic (PV) panels harness sunlight as a clean and renewable energy source, providing a sustainable alternative to fossil fuels. In India, PV technology is gaining traction due to its environmental benefits and governmental support. This study analyzes typical PV generation profiles, identifying daily and seasonal variations influenced by factors like cloud cover. Additionally, it investigates the effectiveness of three EV charging strategies—uncontrolled, smart, and vehicle-to-home (V2H)—using rule-based and Model Predictive Control (MPC) algorithms. Simulations reveal that MPC consistently outperforms rule-based control in reducing household costs, with V2H charging showing potential for cost savings during peak electricity pricing. However, the efficacy of control strategies varies across seasons, suggesting the need for adaptive optimization approaches.

Nonlinear Model Predictive Control—Cross-Coupling Control with Deep Neural Network Feedforward for Multi-Hydraulic System Synchronization Control

This paper studies a multi-hydraulic system (MHS) synchronization control algorithm. Firstly, a general nonlinear asymmetric MHS state space entirety model is established and subsequently the model form is simplified by nonlinear feedback linearization. Secondly, an entirety model-type solution is proposed, integrating a nonlinear model predictive control (NMPC) algorithm with a cross-coupling control (CCC) algorithm. Furthermore, a novel disturbance compensator based on the system's inverse model is introduced to effectively handle disturbances, encompassing unmodeled errors and noise. The proposed innovative controller, known as nonlinear model predictive control—cross-coupling control with deep neural network feedforward (NMPC-CCC-DNNF), is designed to minimize synchronization errors and counteract the impact of disturbances. The stability of the control system is rigorously demonstrated. Finally, simulation results underscore the efficacy of the NMPC-CCC-DNNF controller, showcasing a remarkable 60.8% reduction in synchronization root mean square error (RMSE) compared to other controllers, reaching up to 91.1% in various simulations. These results affirm the superior control performance achieved by the NMPC-CCC-DNNF controller.

MPC motion control of boom descending of unmanned excavator based on regenerative valve

The control precision of the working device has always been a challenging aspect in unmanned excavator research due to the adoption of a triangular drive mode and a complex hydraulic system in the working mechanism. The article focuses on the research of autonomous control for the downward motion of a robotic arm in an unmanned excavator equipped with a regeneration valve. The study aims to achieve precise tracking of fast movement trajectories during operator manipulation, utilizing Model Predictive Control (MPC). Furthermore, the exceptional disturbance rejection capability of the MPC algorithm is demonstrated through interference application. A comprehensive model considering mechanical, hydraulic, and electrical factors is established for the excavator boom. The MPC algorithm is applied to achieve precise control over the boom descent process, providing a foundation for motion control in unmanned excavators. This article presents a theoretical analysis to elucidate the robustness principle of MPC in the descent control of uncertain dynamic arms. By incorporating real parameters, we successfully track predetermined planned paths at different speeds and validate them on a 20-ton hydraulic excavator. The results demonstrate that the MPC control algorithm accurately manipulates the boom descent motion while exhibiting excellent disturbance rejection performance. Compared to PID control algorithms, MPC offers wider target adaptability range and better disturbance rejection performance, making it suitable for rapid application in controlling working devices of unmanned excavators.

Koopman operator-based multi-model for predictive control

AbstractThis work describes a new model structure developed for prediction in Model Predictive Control (MPC). The model has a multi-model structure in which independent sub-models are employed for the consecutive sampling instants. The model lifts process states into a high-dimensional space in which a linear process description is applied. Depending on the influence of the manipulated variables on lifted states, three general model versions are described and model identification algorithms are derived. As a result of the multi-model structure, model parameters are found analytically from computationally uncomplicated least squares problems using the Extended Dynamic Mode Decomposition algorithm, but the evolution of states over the horizon used in MPC is taken into account. Next, the MPC algorithm for the described model is derived. It requires solving online simple quadratic optimisation tasks. The effectiveness of three considered model configurations and three versions of the lifting functions is examined for a nonlinear DC motor benchmark. Their impact on model accuracy, complexity, possible control accuracy and MPC calculation time is thoroughly discussed. Finally, a more complex polymerisation reactor process is considered to showcase the practical applicability of the presented approach to modelling and MPC.

Disturbance rejection design for Gaussian process-based model predictive control using extended state observer

Gaussian process (GP) regression has gained significant popularity in machine learning because it has the intrinsic capability to capture uncertainty in function prediction and requires a limited number of hyperparameters to be optimized. In this study, a Gaussian process model predictive control (GPMPC) algorithm is proposed to model the unknown dynamics of the process using Gaussian process regression. The GPMPC incorporates the expected variance of the GP model to account for the model's uncertainty and to achieve prudent control. Meanwhile, the extended state observer (ESO) is introduced for the GPMPC, which can estimate the unmodeled dynamics and unknown disturbance. With the designed feedforward gain, the proposed extended state observer-based GPMPC (GPMPC-ESO) method can achieve offset-free performance. Theoretical analysis is conducted to evaluate the stability and disturbance rejection performance of the control system. Finally, the algorithms are validated by simulation in continuous stirred tank reactor (CSTR) process control.

Convex distributed robust model predictive control for collision and obstacle avoidance

AbstractThe article proposes a convex distributed robust model predictive control algorithm for collision avoidance in multi‐agent systems with additive disturbances, which utilizes the concept of tube model predictive control to address the disturbances. To tackle the coupled collision avoidance constraints, each agent integrates assumed nominal position and input trajectories from its neighbors, rather than relying on actual ones. Compatibility constraints are then designed using the normal vector of the constructed separating hyperplanes for collision avoidance and the residual collision avoidance margin of the optimal solutions at the last time step to restrict deviations between assumed and actual trajectories and ensure consistency among the agents. The nonconvex collision and obstacle avoidance constraints are convexified using the concept of safe sets, transforming them into time‐varying closed polyhedral constraints while accounting for the impact of disturbances. Particularly, the residual collision avoidance margin is incorporated into the construction of safe sets for the satisfaction of coupled collision avoidance constraints. Consequently, the original collision avoidance optimal control problems can be efficiently and simultaneously solved for all agents using standard quadratic programming techniques. Under the design of local terminal constraint sets for each agent, the proposed algorithm ensures a rigorous analysis of robust constraint satisfaction for collision avoidance constraints, as well as an assessment of recursive feasibility and closed‐loop stability. The effectiveness of the algorithm is demonstrated through an illustrative example, and simulation results validate its ability to successfully achieve collision and obstacle avoidance even in the presence of disturbances.

A flexible and deep peak shaving scheme for combined heat and power plant under full operating conditions

Improving the flexible and deep peak shaving capacity of combined heat and power (CHP) plant under full operating conditions to facilitate renewable energy consumption is the main choice of novel power system. Accordingly, a dry/wet state automatic conversion control scheme fuses the precise mechanism structure, reinforcement learning and multi-objective model predictive control (MPC) algorithms is designed to promote the deep peak shaving ability of CHP plant in this paper. Firstly, the detailed mechanism models of once-through boiler at dry and wet state are presented by analyzing the dynamic characteristics of steam-water flow. Secondly, the large-scale unknown parameters in mechanism models are identified via the Takagi-Sugeno fuzzy modeling, reinforcement learning algorithms and actual dry/wet state conversion data. Thanks to the proposed hybrid modeling strategy, the high-precision boiler-steam unit models at dry and wet state are rapid obtained. Then, to meet different peak shaving demands, the multi-objective MPC algorithm is respectively constructed under dry and wet state with the comprehensive consideration of operational constraints, load tracking error, algorithm stability, power generation cost, CO2 and NOx emission costs. Aiming at maximizing the peak shaving efficiency and flexible operation ability of plant, a dry/wet automatic control scheme combined the designed multi-objective MPC algorithms and identified dry/wet state models is proposed. Finally, the load variation rate of 5 % and 2 % RCM/min is respectively achieved in the dry/wet state conversion tests on a 350 MW CHP plant based on the proposed control scheme. Thus, the rapid and thorough dry/wet state conversion performance of once-through boiler has successfully improved the operational flexibility of CHP plant under full operating conditions.

An adapted model predictive control MPPT for validation of optimum GMPP tracking under partial shading conditions

The energy generation efficiency of photovoltaic (PV) systems is compromised by partial shading conditions (PSCs) of solar irradiance with many maximum power points (MPPs) while tracking output power. Addressing this challenge in the PV system, this article proposes an adapted hybrid control algorithm that tracks the global maximum power point (GMPP) by preventing it from settling at different local maximum power points (LMPPs). The proposed scheme involves the deployment of a 3 × 3 multi-string PV array with a single modified boost converter model and an adapted perturb and observe-based model predictive control (APO-MPC) algorithm. In contrast to traditional strategies, this technique effectively extracts and stabilizes the output power by predicting upcoming future states through the computation of reference current. The boost converter regulates voltage and current levels of the whole PV array, while the proposed algorithm dynamically adjusts the converter's operation to track the GMPP by minimizing the cost function of MPC. Additionally, it reduces hardware costs by eliminating the need for an output current sensor, all while ensuring effective tracking across a variety of climatic profiles. The research illustrates the efficient validation of the proposed method with accurate and stable convergence towards the GMPP with minimal sensors, consequently reducing overall hardware expenses. Simulation and hardware-based outcomes reveal that this approach outperforms classical techniques in terms of both cost-effectiveness and power extraction efficiency, even under PSCs of constant, rapidly changing, and linearly changing irradiances.
