Arrangement and planning of developer’s activities in the course of construction megaprojects implementation

The paper deals with the specific features of megaprojects. Problems related to real estate reproduction in the course of construction megaprojects implementation were analyzed. Considering the specifics of construction megaprojects, recommendations for their performance assessment were developed. Issues relating to development arrangement and planning at all management levels (strategic, tactical and operational) were considered. Recommendations provided in this paper can be used for the assessment of megaproject performance and formation of KPIs for the participants of the construction process.

An Analytical Network Process model for risks prioritisation in megaprojects

Megaprojects are complex and expensive projects that often involve social, technical, economic, environmental and political (STEEP) challenges to project management. Despite these challenges, project owners and financiers continue to invest large sums of money in megaprojects that run high risks of being over schedule and over budget. While some degree of cost and schedule risks are considered during project planning, the challenge of modelling risks interactions and impacts on project performance still remains. To tackle this technical problem, this research adopted the Analytical Network Process and combined it with a new Risk Priority Index as an innovative approach to model risks analytically based on data collected from the Edinburgh Tram Network project at the construction phase. The approach provides an interactive way for developers to prioritise risks across the project supply network and to initiate timely mitigation strategies against significant cost and time consequences of STEEP risks on megaproject performance.

Pragmatic framework of programme organizational capability for delivering megaprojects at design and construction phases: a Chinese client perspective

The number of construction megaprojects, with costs exceeding RMB50 billion (nearly USD800 million), has increased exponentially in China in the past two decades because of outstanding economic achievements and fast urbanization. However, these projects are usually beset with underperformance problems, such as cost overruns, safety incidents, functional and quality defects, and poor environmental and sustainable performance. Programme management has been increasingly advocated as a pragmatic approach through the centralized coordinated management to improve megaproject performance at the overall organizational level. Innovation in Megaprojects: Systems Integration at London Heathrow Terminal 5

Megaprojects require investment of $1bn or more to build infrastructure, usually involving a complex system of production consisting of discrete, routine, and highvolume repetitive processes. Many of these processes can be progressively standardized and replicated to improve overall productive performance. This article presents the findings of research on design and production of London's Heathrow Airport Terminal 5 (T5). The findings were used to develop a conceptual framework—which we call the systems integration model—to identify the project and operational processes that contribute to success in delivering megaprojects. The systems integrator is the lead organization in a megaproject, responsible for establishing a governance structure, managing risk, and coordinating processes performed by a large network of external suppliers. Innovations based on the recombination and replication of processes can be introduced to improve megaproject performance.
