Adapting Traditional Media to the Social Media Culture: A Case Study of Greece

This study is situated within the ongoing scholarly discourse surrounding the role of social media in the evolving communication landscape. The main aim of this research is to examine the extent to which the Greek traditional media and journalists have adapted to the ethos of social media. In particular, this study conducts a comparative analysis to assess whether the Greek media and journalists have effectively embraced the communication challenges arising from advancements in social media, particularly during election cycles. The theoretical foundation rests on the network theory of power, a concept pioneered by the Spanish sociologist Manuel Castells. The empirical component presents the findings obtained through an examination of journalists’ participation in political discourse on Twitter (now named X) throughout seven distinct election periods encompassing all electoral levels in Greece (presidential, national, European and regional/municipal elections, plus a referendum). The findings reveal low levels of adaptation, in contrast with western countries, where journalists and the media have embraced the online culture to a greater extent and appear to take on more prominent roles in debates. The findings provide valuable insights for journalists, politicians and the media in understanding the role of social media in political communication.

The role of social media in political communication: how alternative journalists illuminate information in Central America’s declining democracies

ABSTRACT Declining democracy in Central America, from oppressive policies in El Salvador and detaining journalists in Guatemala to emerging anti-press rhetoric in Costa Rica, reinforces a history of violent censorship for Latin American media, complicating journalists’ abilities to influence communication. Through interviews with journalists in Costa Rica, El Salvador, Guatemala, and Nicaragua, this study analyzes the role of social media in Central American journalism. The interviews reveal that while the dominance of algorithms and information monopolies may assist financially controlled mainstream journalists, social media provide opportunities for alternative journalists in Central America to circumvent economic constraints and become more prominent gatekeeping actors in political communication. These findings indicate a shift in the news agenda, facilitated by social media but hindered by the lingering darkness of constrained media systems.

The Role of Social Media on Electoral Strategy: An Examination of the 2023 Municipal Elections in Tirana, Albania

The main goal of the current study is to ascertain the impact that social media platforms have on electoral strategy, communication tactics, and electoral outcomes in the specific context of the 2023 municipal elections in Tirana, Albania. The purpose of this study is to analyze the official usage data on Facebook and Instagram of Erion Veliaj, the current mayor of Tirana and a candidate associated with the Socialist Party. The temporal scope of the investigation encompasses the period spanning from April 1 to June 1, 2023. The main objective of this study is to investigate the possible impact of widespread use of social networks as a means of political communication on election results, as well as the manner in which this platform influences voter engagement with political candidates. The hypothesis posited in this study suggests that the extensive utilization of social media platforms by political candidates during the municipal elections in Albania in 2023 yielded a favorable effect on public participation in political discussions, hence exerting an influence on the electoral results. The research question under examination are as follows: What were the methods implemented by candidate Erion Veliaj in leveraging social media during the municipal election campaign of 2023? What is the relationship between social media engagement, as measured by quantitative metrics like likes, shares, follower growth rate, and engagement rate, and the electoral success of candidates in the 2023 Municipal Elections in Tirana, Albania? The study used a mixed-methods approach, which combines qualitative and quantitative methodologies, to investigate the correlation between the candidate's patterns of interaction, content tactics across different platforms, and the outcomes of the election. This comprehensive study aims to gain a thorough understanding of the substantial role of social media as a medium for political communication and its positive impact on electoral outcomes.

GANDRUNG AS A POLITICAL COMMUNICATION TOOL IN BANYUWANGI (A Study of Antonio Gramsci's Hegemony)

Gandrung is one of the oldest forms of performing arts in Banyuwangi. Gandrung becomes a symbol of political communication through culture. This is clearly seen during the democratic party period. The purpose of this research is to reveal and criticize Gandrung which is used as a medium of political communication by political actors in Banyuwangi. The form of this research is descriptive qualitative. The theory used is Gramsci's hegemony. Data collection techniques using interviews, observation, and content analysis. The data analysis technique used in this study is an interactive analysis. The results of the study show that the high creativity of the people of Banyuwangi in folk art is recognized by the local government. This has become a loophole for political actors in Banyuwangi to insert political messages into Gandrung art performances. Thus, these political messages can be easily accepted by the public. This proves that if Gandrung's art is studied using Gramsi's theory, it shows that Gandrung is totally hegemony. Total hegemony is characterized by close to total mass affiliation. Society shows a strong degree of moral and intellectual unity, which is evident from the organic relationship between the government and the governed. This relationship is not colored by contradictions and antagonisms either socially or ethically.

THE CONTRADICTORY EFFECTS OF DIGITAL ACCESS AND LIFE SATISFACTION ON VOTING BEHAVIOURS: A RETROSPECTIVE LOOK AT THE 2008 MALAYSIAN GENERAL ELECTION

This paper explores the relationship between life satisfaction and voting intention by analysing the 2008 General Election in Malaysia. The election was significant because of the high turnout rate since 1964 and the rise of digital media in political communication. The latter leads to the second objective of this paper: to investigate whether the presence of digital media reshapes voting behaviours across different levels of life satisfaction. Using the 6th wave of World Value Survey data of 1198 respondents with the Hierarchical Linear Regression Modelling, we show that unhappier voters are more likely to vote. However, by democratising access to information and lowering barriers to connect with voters via digital media, voting intention is levelled irrespective of the degree of life satisfaction. While happier voters pay more attention to the social economic issues and thus are more likely to react to news disseminated via digital media by voting, it is equally likely that unhappier voters provoked by negative news through digital media have greater intention to voice out by casting a vote too.

Strategi komunikasi politik elit NU Pada pilkada lombok tengah 2020 (Studi atas keterlibatan elit NU dalam tim pemenangan paslon Maiq Meres)

The involvement of NU organizational elites can be seen from the role, contribution and political communication strategies they played during the 2020 regional elections in convincing the electorate at the grassroots level. In the regional elections in Central Lombok district in 2020, the political phenomenon that was visible before the voting public was related to the involvement of the Central Lombok NU elite in winning the Lalu Pathul Bahri Candidate Pair - HM Nursiah or the Maiq Meres candidate pair. This research is participatory field research with a descriptive qualitative approach. Data collection was carried out by means of observation, interviews and documentation. The research process was carried out intensively for two months involving informants consisting of main informants and supporting informants regarding the winning of regional head candidates Lalu Pathul Bahri-HM Nursiah. This study found that the Central Lombok district NU elite played an active role as a medium, or media for political communication, the pair of candidates for regent and candidate for deputy regent of Central Lombok Pathul Bhari and HM. Nursiah. The Central Lombok NU elite took part in visiting the electorate, both personally and institutionally. The communication strategy used by the NU elite to convey political messages is to maximize the role of the organizational network, the network of NU teachers, as well as NU's amaliyah activities, which are driven to support pairs of regional head candidates supported by NU.

The Use of Media by Turkey’s Generation Z as a Source for Political Information

In the historical process, each generation has interpreted and organized the social life and the values of the society according to their own philosophy and style of life. Therefore, the influence of the Z generation, which constitutes the most crowded age group of the world population, has become more evident in politics as in every field. It has become more difficult to influence and direct the Z generation voters, who use technology much better than previous generations. One of the most important roles of the media in political communication is to inform the public about political issues and events. The public reaches the information they need to make informed political decisions through mass media. The findings of the research, which is the subject of this study, revealed how and to what extent the Z generation is affected by the media in the process of obtaining information on political issues in Turkey, and thus how the political parties will reach the Z generation through the media. In light of the research findings, it has also been revealed how political communication should evolve to reach the Z generation voters, which will have a decisive effect on the election results in the 21st century.

Instagram and Political Communication - Visual Elements in Political Campaign “Budućnost Srbije”

For more than a decade social media have been an important medium of political communication, more accurately since 2008 and the campaign of Barack Obama. Social media such as Facebook, Twitter, and YouTube were primarily used for political communication; however, the rapidly growing popularity of Instagram has conditioned political entities to adapt to the visual concept of communication with the citizens. One of the additional problems of this form of communication with the public is prominent political populism. Moreover, this trend is present in the Republic of Serbia, where more and more individual and collective political entities are joining Instagram. Also, the profile with the highest number of followers and posts on the Serbian political scene is the profile of the President of the Republic of Serbia, Aleksandar Vučić (@buducnostsrbijeav). As far as the empirical research is concerned, the authors analyzed the posts published on this profile in the first month of its creation and the realization of the political campaign "Future of Serbia" (February 5 – March 5, 2019) and applied the methodology of Maria Grabe and Erik Bucy (2009), which includes nine visual categories characteristic of populist political campaigns. The results of the research indicated that out of 550 visual contents, 434 photographs and 22 videos can be classified into eight out of a total of nine suggested categories. According to the obtained results, the authors concluded that the communication of the President of the Republic of Serbia, Aleksandar Vučić with the public through social media Instagram is based on visual content that Greib and Busy define as populist.

Political parties' portrayal attempts in creating an image of Aceh's women politicians

This study aims to provide an overview of political imagery done by political parties for their female politicians. The constructivist paradigm with a descriptive qualitative approach is used in this study. The informants were the chairman of the DPC of the Democratic Party, the PPP Party, the PKB Party, the chairman of the PDI-P DPD, and female politicians from these parties. The data analysis technique used in this study was the Interactive Model Data Analysis method. The results show that the political parties establish a positive image of women politicians, including involving all women members of the political party in every activity carried out by the party, both in a formal party and non-formal activities within the community. In every activity in the community, political parties attempted to provide the public with an understanding of the importance of the presence of women in the political space, because women will understand women's needs and produce feminist policies. The political imagery was done through political communication media, interpersonal (face to face), groups, mainstream media, and modern media. Political image establishment attempted by political parties for female politicians still has not shown a promising direction. Therefore, political parties must form a positive image for female politicians of their parties. This should be done massively by utilising various media of political communication, involving all community groups, such as the Ulama, Academics, and Non-Governmental Organisations.

Political Communication through the Prism of Social Media: How are Lebanese Political Parties Using Facebook in Electoral Campaigns?

The integration of social media in political communication has expanded significantly over recent years. This article focuses on how politicians are using Facebook in electoral campaigns. The main objective is to analyse the different functions ascribed to this digital platform in electoral communication. The present research studies the usage of Facebook by political parties in Lebanon during the parliamentary election of 2018 based on quantitative content analysis. All Facebook posts of three major political parties published during the electoral campaign were collected and examined. The results of the study reveal first that most parties were using Facebook in a unidirectional way; that is, only to disseminate information without giving any real value to users’ feedback. A prime example of this was how the Future Movement, a popular political party, made significant use of external links, and effective forms of controlled Facebook tools. This demonstrated how politicians aimed to contain and direct users to their preferred information flow. Second, emerging parties from the opposition tended to publish more negative and attack posts than incumbents. Third, the interactive tools of Facebook were used poorly. Fourth, there was, however, a relative difference with regards to political groups outside the formal institution of power, such as the Political Alliance “Kollouna Watani” who made better use of the interactive function. The main factors that could explain the findings are the historical background and path of the political parties as well as their position in or outside the government, the partisan and costly coverage of traditional media outlets, and the hybridisation of political communication. The Effect of Madihin Culture as a Medium of Political Communication in Banjarmasin Election 2024

The objectives to be achieved in this research are to find out how the regulation regarding the level of compliance with turning on the motorcycle headlights during the day and how the effectiveness of the motorcycle headlights obligation during the day reduces the number of motorcycle accidents. The research method used is an empirical legal research method called field research, by interviewing informants and knowing respondents' perceptions which are then compared to conclude. The study results show the regulation regarding compliance with turning on the motorcycle headlights and how the effectiveness of the motorcycle's headlight obligation during the day reduces the number of motorcycle accidents. Based on the results of research conducted by researchers, it can be concluded that, in Law Number 22 of 2009 concerning Road Traffic and Transport Article 107 paragraph (2) regarding compliance with turning on the leading lights during the day for two-wheeled drivers to reduce the number of accidents in the jurisdiction of the City Police. Banjarmasin is ineffective even though the number of compliance violations with turning on the leading lights during the day for two-wheelers is decreasing.

The use of new media in political communication that is more today is the trend in the government, internet campaigns, online citizen political communication, as well as horizontal relations between citizens and other citizens, both in the form of virtual groups and in the context of political education between citizens. Ahead of the election, a number of educated community groups will emerge seeking to strengthen citizens' political awareness through online dissemination of political information targeting netizens. In the current era, various communication media are used to convey political messages including new media. What is the important role of social media in political communication? What is the role of social media in political communication? One of the roles of social media is to form personal branding as a person or a group. Personal branding is more about desires, skills, goals, and values. It is the result of one's hunt for fulfillment and meaning. Personal branding becomes ammunition in building the character of Gibran in this case because the authenticity of branding oneself helps minimize one's weaknesses. So it can be concluded that, first, Gibran's personal branding by utilizing all social media platforms has succeeded in building an image and generating public opinion that he is able to take advantage of advances in new media technology. Second, the COVID-19 pandemic and the presence of new media have drastically changed the political campaign system so campaign innovation in the COVID-19 pandemic era built Gibran's brand as a young politician. He was able to adapt to conditions and challenges in various conditions.

The debate between secularism and Hindu nationalism – how India’s textbooks have become the government’s medium for political communication

ABSTRACT Schools and textbooks are significant mediums for the transmission of political ideas. Textbooks therefore reflect the ideology of the day whilst imparting values, goals, and myths to younger generations. This article provides an insight into the nexus between politics, the state, the social contract, and school textbooks in India. It critically highlights the ways in which the discourses of political parties of the (national) Self and Other are invoked and reflected in school textbooks underpinning the parties’ versions of national identity and transmit their wider political messages, with devastating results on the debates about Indian citizenship. There is a clear link between changing political parties at the helm of national and state governments and which school textbooks are in use. The article reviews the textbook politics between 1998 and 2020, focusing in particular on how the present BJP-led government has appointed Hindutva-minded scholars to lead education institutions underpinning the message of India being a Hindu nation. The right wing RSS has been allowed by the Narendra Modi government to influence the formulation of the National Education Policy 2020 as well as suggesting changes to textbooks to push the national discourse of citizenship defined by Hindutva at the Union and State levels. The article adds, theoretically and substantively, to the specific link between education and the current issues of Indian citizenship as the government tries to change the values of India’s constitution. Not many in this generation of Indians think this is abnormal, as this reflects what they have learnt at school and historically been used to shape the hostile mind-set of new generations vis-à-vis their neighbors, and other religious communities. The article evaluates how over the last two decades textbooks of the National Council for Education Research and Training (NCERT) interpret government policy objectives and guidelines to depict Indian national identity, internal ethnic and cultural diversity, and citizenship.

On Political Communication: Is Social Media More Effective?

The effectiveness of political communication is a necessary result to build a synergistic political system. Many media are used for political communication. Recently, mass media like printed and electronic media are not only the communication platforms. There is also social media considered very influential on the political communication. The model of political communication that occurs in the digital era is now very different from the last few years. Media or forums for political communication are already very diverse. In this era, all political communication media can be done on social media platforms. With social media, many barriers can be minimized. It cuts the costs and is more practical to build communication between public officials and their constituents. Yet, the absent of physical presence in social media could undermine how effective is indirect-communication without having a face-to-face or physical meeting. Does social media provide more effective features in the way of political communication? This study discusses several essential things in building and measuring the effectiveness of political communication between public officials and the community regarding the current development of communication.

Political communication in the age of social media

The development of communication technology has penetrated human life. One form of communication technology development is new media (new media) which then gave birth to social media. The world of politics cannot be separated from the influence of the development of new media and social media. Social media are like two sides of a coin for political actors. On the one hand, the success of using social media can enable political actors to get positive support. But on the other hand, failure to take advantage of social media risks damaging the image he has. This article uses a qualitative approach to discuss the challenges and opportunities of social media for political actors. The explanation of the use of social media in political communication is the first part of this paper. The second part discusses the challenges faced by political actors in this 4.0 era The third part offers an opportunity for political actors to use social media. The fourth or final part is a conclusion that contains what political actors should do to minimize risks and maximize the opportunities offered by social media.

The Role of Russian Mass Media in Political Communication: Historical Stages Content

The article analyzes the role of the mass media in the political communication process development. The author investigates the transformation of the role of political information in print, radio and Internet media using comparative analysis. The article examines the relationship between the population literacy rate and the mass media in the process of political communication in Russia at the beginning of the 20th century. It is concluded that mass media are turning not only into a fundamental factor of political communication, but also into the main factor influencing the irreversible process of changing the political system itself, which highlights the role of the mass media as a political communication medium in modern conditions.

Big data analysis: Ganjar Pranowo's political communication through social media Twitter

In this modern era, advances in communication technology have spread to the lives of humanity. One form of advancement in communication technology is new media, which is known as digital technology, which then gave birth to social media. One political actor is the regional head. Ganjar Pranowo, as one of the local leaders, carried out political communication by establishing close relations with the community, collaborating with various parties to show the performance that had carried out by utilizing social media as a medium of contact with the public. The method used in this research is to use social media analysis with Nvivo 12 Plus. Based on the study from Nvivo stated that Ganjar Pranowo's Political Communication focuses on political and government matters. Ganjar Pranowo aggressively promotes #VisitJawaTengah and #JatengGayeng. Mention interactions from Twitter Ganjar Pranawo and Taj Yasin Maimoen are the most common interactions based on Word similarity. Based on this, it can see that Ganjar Pranowo provides information to the public by utilizing social media as a medium of political communication.

DIGITAL STORYTELLING THROUGH VLOG AS A REBRANDING MEDIA FOR BASUKI TJAHAJA PURNAMA

After being released from prison for the blasphemy case, politician Basuki Tjahaja Purnama has returned to politics and rebuilding his reputation. Using vlog as a medium, Basuki presents a new personality as “BTP” which had more positive attitude than his past self as “Ahok”. This study aims to identify digital storytelling in Basuki's vlog as a form of rebranding activities he undertakes. The research was conducted through critical paradigm with semiotics analysis by Fiske. Data collected from a vlog on “Panggil Saya BTP” Youtube channel. The results showed that Basuki consistently displayed rebranding activities through storytelling in vlogs. The rebranding activity was applied by Basukithrough new name, new logo, and new slogan, which was carried out to replace the negative image of his past. Although there was a lack of technical storyplotting elements, the construction of positive impressions were consistently portrayed by Basuki in his vlog through storytelling, both explicitly through content and implicitly through gestures. The presence of Basuki on Youtube could be an example of the successful adoption of new media in political communication conducted by politicians after experiencing a reputation crisis.
