Problems of and prospects for the development of railway infrastructure in Kazakhstan

The rail transport remains and will in the foreseeable future remain the main mode of transport in Kazakhstan. Its importance is enhanced by the growing transit rail traffic between China and the European Union as well as between the Central Asian countries and Russia, by the fact that Kazakhstan is a landlocked country and by an active development of the Chinese Belt and Road Initiative. This is why it is so important to consider the problems of and prospects for the development of railway infrastructure in the country. The study is based on the relevant literature review and interviews with representatives of major market players and academia. The interviewees identified and discussed the major problems, recommended their solutions, and suggested ways forward. It is proposed to organize a thorough discussion of these solutions and to implement the approved ones. In general, the topic of this article is of serious importance for the country because the full utilization of its transport and transit potential will support the overall national development.

Analysis of the causes of changes in the state of supporting metal structures of metro escalators

The metro in St. Petersburg, being the main mode of transport, has 72 stations, which have 303 escalators and 30 travelators of various types. Tunnel and span escalators, due to their design features, are both a machine and a structure. The service life of a part of the escalators by the beginning of 2023 exceeded the limits set by the regulatory and technical documentation. If any components and mechanisms can be replaced during repairs of various types, the supporting metal structures, with few exceptions, continue to work in the same conditions. A clear definition of the factors infl uencing the change in the state of supporting metal structures allows us to develop qualitative methods for determining their residual life and predicting the dynamics of various processes. This set of factors can be divided conditionally into two groups: factors related to design features and factors related to operation and environmental conditions. In conclusion, it is noted that the loads transmitted to the supporting metal structure consist of a large number of components of various origins and when assessing their impact, it is necessary to take into account the quantitative accumulation of corrosion damage.

A Systematic Literature Review on Health Benefits, Incentives, and Applications to Promote Walking in Urban Areas

The transportation sector contributes significantly to global warming, as well as to urban fabric problems such as traffic congestion, traffic accidents, noise pollution, and air pollution. A shift from fossil fuels to renewable sources and from motorized to non-motorized modes is now considered essential to create sustainable communities. Walking is a sustainable transport mode and several studies have focused on factors affecting it, including travel behavior and sociodemographics. In this study, we conduct a systematic literature review to identify and record walking benefits, the financial incentives that encourage travelers to walk, and applications that support it. Financial incentives are found to have short-term effects, and their success depends on the level and structure of the incentives as well as the characteristics of the participants. In addition, non-financial incentives, such as improving infrastructure and pedestrian safety, or providing information and education about the benefits of walking, may also promote it as a main mode of transport.

ІСТОРИЧНІ ОСОБЛИВОСТІ ФОРМУВАННЯ ОДЕСЬКИХ ВОКЗАЛІВ

The historical features of the formation of Odessa railway stations are considered. It was discovered that the history of railway construction in Ukraine began in 1854 with the construction of a railway branch from Odessa to Parkan, which was the beginning of the rich history of the Odessa railway and railway stations. There were 5 stations in total: "Freight" – a warehouse station and a large station (1865); "Odessa-Main" railway station (first – 1884, existing – 1944 – 1952); "Odessa-Port" railway station (1907 – 1910); Kuyalnytsky station (1873); "Odessa- Passenger" railway station (1914). And a few more temporary and auxiliary ones: "Narkhoz" Station (1944); Station "Odessa-Mala" (1903); Station "Odessa-East" (1970). One of the main achievements of the research is the discovery and study of the formation of the "Bread Town" – on the outskirts of the city of Odessa at the beginning of the 20th century, which was a large warehouse complex, where a dense building of warehouses, warehouses and shopping areas was formed between the railway tracks. The remnants of the Bread Town quarter setting are now city blocks, retaining working rail tracks only at the edges. In the realities of the present time, the importance of the Ukrainian railway and its role in the development of the economy and the process of restoration of the affected cities and territories were revealed. And also the question of the need to reform the structure of the railways arose acutely: the cargo and passenger flow, connected with military realities, increased many times and forced to change the main modes of transportation. It turned out that the new reality requires greater adaptability from the transport infrastructure.

Fire Accident Risk Analysis of Lithium Battery Energy Storage Systems during Maritime Transportation

The lithium battery energy storage system (LBESS) has been rapidly developed and applied in engineering in recent years. Maritime transportation has the advantages of large volume, low cost, and less energy consumption, which is the main transportation mode for importing and exporting LBESS; nevertheless, a fire accident is the leading accident type in the transportation process of LBESS. This paper applied fault tree analysis and Bayesian network methods to evaluate the fire accident risk of LBESS in the process of maritime transportation. The Bayesian network was constructed via GeNIe 2.3 software, and the probability of LBESS fire accidents during maritime transportation was calculated based on the probability of basic events occurring. The results showed that an unsuitable firefighting system for putting out lithium battery fires, high humidity, and monitoring equipment without a real-time alarm function have the most significant influence on the occurrence of LBESS fire accidents during maritime transportation. The research work of this paper provides a theoretical basis for the risk assessment of LBESS during maritime transportation.

Parental perspectives on the decision-making process on transport mode choice in adolescents: a qualitative study with mothers and fathers.

The present study aims to understand the familial decision-making process on transport mode choice in adolescents with a focus on the parental perspective within this process. Active travel contributes to adolescents' overall physical activity and its positive health effects. Based on the social-learning theory, especially parents are assigned a central role for adolescents' travel behavior. The aim of the present study was to examine how parents are involved in the decision-making process on transport mode choice in adolescents. The study is part of the cross-sectional mixed-methods ARRIVE study which includes semi-structured interviews with mothers (n = 12) and fathers (n = 7) of 11- to 14-year-old German adolescents. The interviews focused on travel behavior in adolescents and the decision-making process on transport mode choice from the parental perspective. All interviews were analyzed inductively using Thematic Analysis. Our study revealed that parents do not primarily decide for or against active travel in adolescents, but are mostly involved in the decision-making process, especially in case of a deviation from the main transport mode. Different forms of parental involvement in the decision-making process were identified. Some parents acted as main decision makers which is the highest form of involvement while others gave their children complete freedom of choose a transport mode for themselves. These parents accepted their child's choice fully which shows a low involvement in the decision-making process. The results provide a deeper understanding of the familial decision-making process on travel behavior in adolescents. The results indicate an occasionally parental involvement in the decision-making process on the mainly used transport mode by adolescents, and that mothers and fathers are always involved when deviating from the main mode. Further research should investigate changes in travel behavior from childhood to young adulthood to understand long-term travel decisions in families. Due to the findings that parents are often involved in the decision-making process on transport mode choice and that they mainly reported safety concerns as barriers to their children's active travel, further research should focus especially on the social and physical environment of adolescents.

COVID Pandemics and Inland Transportation in the Brazilian Amazon: A Note on the Risks of Infection in Typical Passenger Vessels

Located in the center of the largest river basin in the world, the State of Amazonas in Brazil has an extensive network of more than 20 thousand kilometers of navigable waterways, which is the main mode of transportation between localities, both for cargo and passengers. The region is practically disconnected from the rest of the country due to the lack of roads. Thus, the Amazon River network acted as an efficient means of transmission of the new coronavirus (COVID-19), rapidly transforming the region into an epicenter of the pandemic with one of the highest infection rates in Brazil. Despite the adoption of national and state measures to combat new infections, the situation continued to deteriorate for reasons still under investigation. Given this scenario, this work aims to identify possible infection risks in typical passenger vessels used in the Brazilian Amazon. Three case studies of different passenger vessels were considered, discussing possible scenarios that could allow the spread of COVID and proposing some recommendations for infection prevention. It is hoped that this communication will contribute to the dissemination of information related to the typical means of long-distance passenger transport in the Amazon, to the planning of infectious disease prevention strategies on board regional ships and to ensure a sustainable future for the Amazonian population. Furthermore, this research aims to contribute to the sustainable development goals of the United Nations 2030 Agenda on health and well-being.

Railways of India. An important stage of modernization is completed – unification of track width

India, the Republic of India is a country of one of the world’s oldest civilizations, the largest state in the world by population — 1.42 billion people (end of 2022), occupying an area of over 3 million square kilometers. India, which has accelerated the pace of its socio-economic development in recent decades, is playing an increasingly important role in the international arena every year, including as one of the BRICS organizers. The state railways of India are managed by the Ministry of Railways of India represented by Indian Railways (99 % of the country’s railway network) and are, despite the dominance of motor transport, remain one of the main modes of transport. During the year, the railways of India transport more than 8 billion passengers (2nd place in the world after Japan), the staff of the railways of India will amount to 1.2 million people (the 7th employer in the world). Railway transport in India is developing intensively, in recent years, work has been intensified on the organization of high–speed traffi c on a number of lines of existing railways, the fi rst high-speed railway line Mumbai — Ahmedabad is being built with a normal gauge of 1435 mm with a length of 508 km, designed for a maximum train speed of 350 km/h. The authors of the article have repeatedly visited India, visited various railway enterprises, railway educational institutions — universities and institutes, met with industry leaders at the Ministry of Railways of India, traveled along the country’s railways along a number of routes with a total length of about six thousand km.

Integrating Autonomous Busses as Door-to-Door and First-/Last-Mile Service into Public Transport: Findings from a Stated Choice Experiment

Autonomous busses and on-demand (OD) services have the potential to improve the public transport system. However, research on potential traffic impacts is still ongoing, mainly because of a lack of existing use cases of autonomous driving as part of public transport. The availability of revealed preference data for mode choice decisions is thus very limited. Therefore, we conducted a stated choice experiment to assess mode choice preferences with regard to use cases as the main mode of transport and as the solution for the first and last mile. We also distinguished between OD and schedule-based (sched.) services. The target population of the survey is the population of Baden-Württemberg, a state in southwestern Germany. The responses of 1,434 people were analyzed using a nested logit approach. On this basis, we established exemplary utility functions and descriptively derived recommendations for efficient forms of deploying autonomous busses in addition to already existing well-developed public transport systems. It was found that, under the given conditions, public transport pass owners without a car in their household would be the most interested in using autonomous busses. Car owners without a smartphone see less benefit. It was also shown that the recruiting method of the respondents is crucial. Those reached via social media were significantly more positive than those contacted via an online panel. Further evaluations show that autonomous busses are rated similarly to existing public transport and consequently have particularly high potential on medium distances, especially if their deployment leads to shorter access routes.

Measuring disparities in access to district and referral hospitals in the city of Kigali, Rwanda

The study focused on the identification of theoretical and methodological constructs that can be used to analyse and improve the spatial performance of public health service delivery systems and the development of a corresponding spatial-analysis and GIS-based planning approach using the city of Kigali as a case study. Access to health care as a multi-tiered system was measured by using five dimensions of access, namely geographic accessibility, availability, affordability, acceptability and accommodation. Geo-statistical analysis was performed to measure and evaluate access to the district and referral health care. For geographic access, the travel time for every trip is approximated for the two main modes of transport (walking and public transport). To realistically represent the friction of distance, the street network was categorised into several road classes for which different travel speeds are estimated for each transport mode on the basis of local knowledge. A factor analysis model was used for availability, affordability, acceptability, and accommodation dimensions. Different indicators were evaluated in various units and scales and standardized to see how satisfaction levels varied with each dimension. Based on the type of indicator, for the cost or benefit, the score was zero (0) or one (1). One (1) was considered a positive impact, while zero (0) was considered a negative impact. Summary scores were developed for all indicators by combining more than one indicator into a single value. The created summary score also ranges from 0 to 1, and the higher the score, the better the access attainment. To find areas that need intervention, the comparison of all five indicators and the scores of access for each indicator was made. The dimensions of geographic accessibility and availability appeared to be the most problematic. The district health care dimensions have revealed a low performance level in geographic accessibility (0.64) and a high-performance level in affordability (0.94). The referral health care dimensions have revealed a low performance level of geographic accessibility (0.17) and a high-performance level of acceptability (0.92). Health planners and policy makers will commonly require such a planning method, particularly in the developing world where spatial contexts are highly dynamic as a result of rapid urbanisation.

Quad-Interleaving Routing Algorithm for Performance Enhancement of Oil and Gas Pipeline Network Monitoring

The pipeline is one of the main modes oftransportation for the oil and gas industry that could be laid offshore and onshore. Pipeline transportation requires close monitoring as a failure in pipelines causes disruption of supply, loss of precious commodities and not to mention irreversible environmental damage will be an essential topic. The major issue in AODV and DSDV is when the network gets more extensive, which causes high packet traffic resulting in high packet loss, energy consumption and passive nodes. This research aims to establish a routing algorithm with better performance focusing on throughput, fairness index, delivery ratio and passive nodes and energy consumption. The study is confined to wireless sensor network simulation on Network Simulator Tool. A technique of quad-interleaving Ad-hoc On- demand Distance Vector (QAODV) routing algorithm has been developed where predefined Alpha, Beta, Charlie and Delta nodes will communicate with the nodes which belong to their family. The results of the developed routing protocol have been compared with standard AODV, DSDV and OLSR routing protocols. The developed routing algorithm has produced a massive improvement in the delivery ratio (25% more), throughput (44% more), passive nodes (71 less), fairness index (0.06 more) and energy consumption (0.22J less).

Electrification of Transport: Advantages and Prospects

Electrification has become the main mode of new energy transportation. This paper compared electric vehicles with internal combustion and hydrogen fuel cell vehicles. Less environmental pollution, higher efficiency of power system, and lower cost were the most favourable attributes of electric vehicles. In addition, comparing Li-ion and other batteries, the greatest energy density, the lowest self-discharge rate, and the longest cycle life made Li-ion the most suitable choice for electric vehicles. However, the Li-ion battery in electric vehicles still has some limitations. The 400 km driving range limits electric vehicles in urban and developed areas. It also made traditional fossil fuel vehicles the best choice for people with long-range travel needs. Under low temperatures, the capacity decline and polarization effects of Li-ion batteries made electric vehicles unable to meet the needs of use in extreme environments. A higher energy density and a wider range of working temperatures are needed to advance further in transportation.

In this article, the authors consider the issue of optimizing passenger transportation by rail in terms of competition with other modes of transport that carry passengers both on the territory of Kazakhstan (local and suburban passenger transportation) and in the international direction. The analysis of the current state of passenger transportation in the Republic of Kazakhstan is carried out, divided by types of transport. The trends of changes in passenger traffic by the main modes of transport of the Republic of Kazakhstan are studied. The main priority directions of the development of railway passenger transport are highlighted, which can increase the demand for passenger transportation. The foreign experience of implementation and features of implementation of projects of high-speed and high-speed movement of passenger trains of developed countries are considered. Recommendations of the most cost-effective approach to increasing the speeds of passenger trains on the railway transport network are presented.

The urban commuter cyclist trousers design with a sustainable design approach

After the prolonged COVID-19 pandemic, we have entered the New Normal phase with all adjustments and adaptations to new post-pandemic habits. Throughout 2020 and 2021 cycling has become a trend for a healthy lifestyle that people are interested in. With the rise of people cycling, sales of bicycles and their supporting equipment such as apparel have also increased. Seeing the trend of cycling and commuter bike riders who use bicycles as the main mode of transportation for daily mobilization, this becomes a potential for designing cargo pants for commuter bike riders with a sustainable design approach. Cargo pants are versatile pants that prioritize utility with various compartments that can fit various user items. Exploration of the features and systems in the design product is expected to meet the needs of commuter bike users and provide alternative products to users.

Complex Operation of Types of Transport in the Conditions of Military International Transportation

The article identifies the priority approaches to the technical and technological modernization of the main modes of transport of Ukraine and allied countries to ensure high-quality transportation of various goods, especially military goods, in the conditions of hostilities and during the period of economic recovery. The author proposes an algorithm for the formation of logistics chains for the delivery of military cargoes according to two schemes (from the United States and Western Europe). The necessity of creating a unified transport system, addressing the issue of further proportional development of the unified transport system and each of its components (modes of transport, structural units) is described. The main aspects that will affect the prospects for the development of a unified transport system are identified. The main tasks of the transport system that need to be solved to meet the needs of the state economy and the population in transportation are described. It is determined that when establishing the priority and order of restoration of the economic and social sectors destroyed by the war, it is necessary, first of all, to direct all resources (financial and material) to the restoration and development of transport, primarily rail and air transport. This is the only approach to solving the complex problem of improving the quality of transport. The complexity of its solution lies in ensuring, taking into account the actual volumes of transportation, the proportional development of each element of the transport modes.

Food insecurity disparities and impact on academic and social experiences among college students at a large public university

Objective: This research seeks to understand food insecurity experiences among students at a large public university in the southern United States. Participants: Participants consented and completed an online survey disseminated on campus in April–May 2021 (N = 418). The participants sampled were predominantly undergraduate (78.2%), females (72.4%), who lived off campus (54.1%), and were racially/ethnically diverse. Methods: Descriptive statistics, multivariable logistic regression, and chi-squared tests were used to examine the differences and association between demographic characteristics and behaviors and food insecurity status. Results: About 32% students surveyed had experienced food insecurity in the last year, which resembles national trends. There were significant differences in students’ food insecurity status by race, sexual orientation, first-generation status, residential category, and main mode of transportation. Food insecurity impacted academic and socioeconomic student behaviors. Conclusions: This research has implications for improving the academic, physical, and psychological wellbeing of university students and should inform future programs and policies.

A study on the occurrence of glass and paint across various cities in the United States–Part II: Background presence of paint in the general population

The frequency of occurrence of paint in the general population was estimated in four U.S. cities; Houston, TX, Huntsville, TX, Morgantown, WV, and Pittsburgh, PA. A total of 1,883 garment and footwear areas were sampled from the 410 participants. From these volunteers, up to six garment areas were sampled for the presence of paint and glass. Recovered paint particles were analyzed via microscopy and micro-FTIR spectroscopy. Overall, 111 paint fragments were recovered from 21% of all the participants, with the Houston set yielding 50% of those fragments, while 21% came from the Morgantown set, 26% from the Huntsville set, and 3.6% from the Pittsburgh set. Paint particles were recovered primarily on the upper surfaces and lower surfaces of the garments. Much of the paint recovered was single-layered architectural or automotive paint with various binders and pigment compositions. The general trends and differences of paint fragments from these cities are discussed, including the effects on the frequency rates of the types of garments and footwear worn and the main modes of transportation. The concurrent presence of both glass and paint being recovered from the same individual was rare, and even more uncommon to find both traces in a single item. In this case, there was only one individual in the Houston set who had both types of particles on their person, and no garment areas or footwear areas with both traces present.

To Share or Not to Share—Expected Transportation Mode Changes Given Different Types of Fully Automated Vehicles

When it comes to climate change, automated vehicles (AV) are often presented as a key factor to reducing emissions related with the transport sector. While studies promise emissions savings of up to 80%, it is often overlooked how AVs will be introduced and which transportation mode changes will arise from their implementation. Therefore, this online survey examined usage intentions regarding private and shared AV types, and underlying attitudes and mobility needs of 136 current users of different main modes of transport. Two main results counteract the general assumption of ecological sustainability benefits of AVs: First, current car drivers prefer private over shared AV types, even though notable sustainability gains can only be expected from shared AVs. Second, current users of more sustainable modes of transport (walking, bike, public transport) would replace theses modes by AVs for substantial shares of their trips, which represents a behavioural rebound effect, since AVs cannot be more sustainable than walking or biking. Group-specific mobility needs and knowledge gaps regarding the sustainability of different AV types are identified as reasons for these results and as starting points for deriving necessary measures accompanying the introduction of AVs into society through motivating ecologically sustainable transportation mode changes.

Phase-field modeling of coupled reactive transport and pore structure evolution due to mineral dissolution in porous media

Based on the phase-field method, a fluid–solid coupling modeling method was proposed to simulate the reaction transport in porous media at the pore scale and realize the dynamic tracking of the fluid–solid interface. We skillfully combined the phase-field module in COMSOL with the Heaviside function to realize the numerical solution of the model. The feasibility and reliability of the model are verified by comparing it with the results of previous studies on the related benchmark problems (the dissolution process of a single calcite crystal). To further explore the practicability of the model, we simulate the dissolution process in two-dimensional porous media generated by random circles under different transport conditions and reaction rates. The results show that the solute can be transported downstream of the model region under advection-dominated transport conditions, which are common in engineering applications, and the dissolution reaction in the medium takes place synchronously. When diffusion is the main transport mode which often occurs in natural conditions, and the reaction is relatively fast, the solute is difficult to transport downstream of the model region, mineral dissolution mainly occurs near the solute inlet, and mineral disappearance is carried out in a horizontal push mode. The permeability-porosity relationship is predicted by the Kozeny-Carman law for different transport conditions and reaction rates. The results show that the Kozeny-Carman law is more accurate in predicting permeability over a porosity range of 15% for advection-dominated reactive transport, considering specific surface area variation.

Railway Emission Trends in China Based on Fuel Life Cycle Analysis

Railway transportation is one of the main modes of modern transportation. Under the dual constraints of air quality improvement and carbon neutrality achievement, clarifying the emission trend of CO2 and pollutants in railway transportation is of great significance for pollution and carbon reduction in the transport sector. In this study, the CO2 and pollutant emission characteristics of Chinese railways from 2001 to 2018 were analyzed based on the fuel life cycle method. Then, railway emission trends from 2019-2030 were assessed combined with scenario analysis. The results showed that with the advancement of railway electrification, the use of new diesel locomotives, and the continuous upgrading of fuel standards, the total CO2 and pollutant emissions in the fuel life cycle of railway transportation showed an upward and downward trend, respectively. In 2018, the total emissions of CO2, NOx, CO, BC, and SOx from railway transportation were 3780.29×104t, 11.98×104t, 3.94×104t, 0.20×104t, and 3.08×104t, respectively. Accelerating the improvement of power structure and reducing unit energy consumption were the best single control strategies to reduce railway emissions of CO2, SOx, NOx, BC, and CO, respectively. Under the comprehensive scenario of actively responding to railway pollution and carbon reduction, the emission reduction rates of CO2, NOx, CO, BC, and SOx could reach 35%, 37%, 39%, 32%, and 45%, respectively. The stagnation of power structure reform or the railway electrification process will lead to a significant increase in total emissions of railway transportation. Therefore, the pollution and carbon reduction of railway transportation requires continuous attention.
