This abstract digs into the integration of solar energy and AI technology in autos, examining their synergistic potential to transform the automotive industry and pave the way for a more sustainable future.The paper presents the concept of solar-powered cars and discusses their importance in reducing environmental concerns connected with regular fossil-fuelled vehicles. Solar energy, captured by solar panels built into the vehicle's construction, provides a clean and abundant power source, minimizing reliance on non-renewable resources and lowering greenhouse gas emissions. Furthermore, advances in solar panel efficiency and energy storage technology have increased the practicality of solar-powered vehicles for widespread use.. Furthermore, AI-powered autonomous driving capabilities improve safety by reducing human error and allowing for proactive collision avoidance methods. Cardiovascular Imaging, Climate Change, and Environmental Sustainability.

Environmental exposures including poor air quality and extreme temperatures are exacerbated by climate change and are associated with adverse cardiovascular outcomes. Concomitantly, the delivery of health care generates substantial atmospheric greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions contributing to the climate crisis. Therefore, cardiac imaging teams must be aware not only of the adverse cardiovascular health effects of climate change, but also the downstream environmental ramifications of cardiovascular imaging. The purpose of this review is to highlight the impact of climate change on cardiovascular health, discuss the environmental impact of cardiovascular imaging, and describe opportunities to improve environmental sustainability of cardiac MRI, cardiac CT, echocardiography, cardiac nuclear imaging, and invasive cardiovascular imaging. Overarching strategies to improve environmental sustainability in cardiovascular imaging include prioritizing imaging tests with lower GHG emissions when more than one test is appropriate, reducing low-value imaging, and turning equipment off when not in use. Modality-specific opportunities include focused MRI protocols and low-field-strength applications, iodine contrast media recycling programs in cardiac CT, judicious use of US-enhancing agents in echocardiography, improved radiopharmaceutical procurement and waste management in nuclear cardiology, and use of reusable supplies in interventional suites. Finally, future directions and research are highlighted, including life cycle assessments over the lifespan of cardiac imaging equipment and the impact of artificial intelligence tools. The greenhouse gas performance of selected biodegradable and recalcitrant plastics in U.S. landfills

Biodegradable plastics are often considered to exhibit superior environmental performance compared to conventional recalcitrant plastics. Here, we assess the greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions of selected biodegradable and recalcitrant plastics made from both fossil and biogenic carbon (C) as disposed in a national average U.S. landfill. This average landfill incorporates consideration of size, precipitation, landfill gas management, and gas collection installation schedule. The GHG emissions of an 80% biodegradable polycaprolactone (PCLf) made from fossil C and a 2% biodegradable poly(butylene succinate) (PBSb) made from biogenic C were evaluated to represent the range of anaerobic biodegradabilities. The 2% biodegradable PBSb has lower GHG emissions than the 80% biodegradable PCLf in the national average landfill. In the best case, which includes aggressive gas collection, conversion of gas to energy, and disposal in a large landfill, the PCLf results in 2423 kg CO2e/mt, which is well above PBSb (−1956 kg CO2e/mt), a hypothetical biogenic and 80% biodegradable PCLb (4739 kg CO2e/mt), and recalcitrant fossil plastic (0 kg CO2e/mt). From a disposal perspective, a recalcitrant biogenic plastic is optimal given the long-term storage of carbon. This study informs the direction of materials research to develop materials that minimize their overall environmental footprint at end-of-life.

At the macro level, sustainable development, environmental issues, resource efficiency, energy security and decarbonisation are interrelated concepts and often interrelated policies and sets of measures. At the micro level, there is a direct link between resource consumption, energy intensity of products (technologies, processes) and negative environmental impacts and greenhouse gas emissions. At the same time, energy transition and decarbonization may in some cases conflict with energy security, and specific policies are needed to reconcile them. The Best Available Techniques (BAT) system can be seen as a comprehensive tool that combines environmental and industrial policy. The BAT mechanism goes beyond environmental regulation and promotes technological upgrading for competitiveness and sustainability. BAT is in line with the climate doctrine and the socio-economic development strategy of low greenhouse gas emissions. BAT indicators can serve as a metric for evaluating green projects, providing transparency and a common language for regulators and businesses. It could also involve extending the use of BAT for these purposes to second-tier and small and medium-sized enterprises, and generally positioning BAT as a key element of Russia's environmental, social and governance (ESG) infrastructure. In general, it is a universal and effective tool for solving pressing environmental and economic problems at both micro and macro levels.

Assessing the Impact of Recycled Building Materials on Environmental Sustainability and Energy Efficiency: A Comprehensive Framework for Reducing Greenhouse Gas Emissions

In this study, we critically examine the potential of recycled construction materials, focusing on how these materials can significantly reduce greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions and energy usage in the construction sector. By adopting an integrated approach that combines Life Cycle Assessment (LCA) and Material Flow Analysis (MFA) within the circular economy framework, we thoroughly examine the lifecycle environmental performance of these materials. Our findings reveal a promising future where incorporating recycled materials in construction can significantly lower GHG emissions and conserve energy. This underscores their crucial role in advancing sustainable construction practices. Moreover, our study emphasizes the need for robust regulatory frameworks and technological innovations to enhance the adoption of environmentally responsible practices. We encourage policymakers, industry stakeholders, and the academic community to collaborate and promote the adoption of a circular economy strategy in the building sector. Our research contributes to the ongoing discussion on sustainable construction, offering evidence-based insights that can inform future policies and initiatives to improve environmental stewardship in the construction industry. This study aligns with the European Union’s objectives of achieving climate-neutral cities by 2030 and the United Nations’ Sustainable Development Goals outlined for completion by 2030. Overall, this paper contributes to the ongoing dialogue on sustainable construction, providing a fact-driven basis for future policy and initiatives to enhance environmental stewardship in the industry.

Energy efficiency contributes almost 40% of the potential for lowering greenhouse gas emissions. Addressing climate change while sustaining economic development is a crucial and complex task. The research examined energy efficiency's influence on economic growth and environmental sustainability in the top 10 nations with the highest energy efficiency levels between 1990 and 2019. The analysis used energy availability, security, and depletion as moderating factors. A comprehensive empirical investigation, including sophisticated econometric approaches, was conducted to achieve this objective. The findings of the Westerlund panel co-integration test imply long-term linkages among the variables under consideration. The research indicates a positive correlation between energy intensity, availability, and safety, as well as the levels of carbon dioxide emissions, ecological impact, and economic development. The decrease in energy availability was shown to have a detrimental effect on economic growth while positively correlated with both carbon dioxide emissions and the environmental impact. The results indicate that energy magnitude, availability, and security have an excellent effect on economic development but affect the surroundings. The empirical data suggests that economies must attempt to meet economic and ecological goals by separating energy use from economic growth. This task is performed via enhancements in energy utilization.

Can converting raw straw into biochar incorporation achieve both higher maize yield and lower greenhouse gas emissions intensity in drought-prone environment?

Converting raw straw into biochar is considered an effective strategy for soil carbon sequestration. However, it remains uncertain whether biochar is more environmentally friendly for achieving higher crop yield in comparison to raw straw in drought-prone regions. Here, a 5-year experiment with three treatments (no incorporation(CK), raw straw incorporation(SI) and straw-derived biochar incorporation(BI)) was conducted to examine the effects of SI and BI on soil physicochemical properties, grain yield (GY), and greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions. Results indicated both SI and BI increased soil water content (SWC), soil temperature (ST), soil porosity, field capacity, pH, total nitrogen and soil organic carbon (SOC) compared with CK. On average, seasonal soil CO2 emission increased significantly by 42.3% in SI and 16.8% in BI, respectively; seasonal N2O emission increased by 26.9% in SI, while decreased by 17.5% in BI. Particularly, the 5-year average GY was as high as 9.4 t ha-1 in BI, significantly higher than that of SI and CK. The 5-year average global warming potential (GWP) increased by 57.9% and 24.6% under SI and BI, respectively, compared with CK. As a result, the average GHG emission intensity (GHGI) increased by 32.0% in SI, whereas it declined by 8.9% in BI. Attribution analysis showed that the CO2 emission primary driven GHGI change under SI, contributing up to 76.4% to GHGI increase. Conversely, the GY increase primary driven GHGI change under BI, contributing to 55.0% GHGI decrease. Therefore, converting raw straw into biochar incorporation acts as an environment-friendly strategy for higher yield harvest.

This research seeks to offer a thorough insight into the principles and practices behind biomass gasification, highlighting its role in the transition towards a sustainable and renewable energy future. The research will investigate the technical and economic feasibility of utilizing biomass gasification gas for electricity generation, examining the benefits, challenges, and opportunities associated with this alternative energy source. By addressing critical issues such as feedstock availability, gasifier technology, gas cleaning processes, and power plant integration, this study seeks to offer valuable insights into the potential of biomass gasification gas as a clean and renewable energy solution.

Sustainable future of construction: the potential of concrete with basalt mini-bars as reinforcement

The paper concerns the influence of basalt minibars on the subcritical and critical behaviour of test specimens made of concrete with low-emission cement. Low-emission cement produces lower emissions of greenhouse gases and other pollutants than traditional cement. Analyses were conducted on changes in fracture mechanics parameters depending on the content of microfibers in the concrete mix (0, 2, 4, 8 kg/m³), the type of cement used, and the water-to-cement ratio (w/c). It was demonstrated that concrete reinforced with basalt microfibers exhibits increased resistance to crack initiation and propagation. An increase in the stress intensity factor was observed for CEMI 42.5R concretes at w/c=0.5 by 27%, at w/c =0.4 by 62%, and for CEM II 42.5R/A-V concretes at w/c=0.5 by 29%, and at w/c=0.4 by as much as 30%. It was shown that the addition of microfibers to concrete made with low-emission cement significantly increases the mechanical parameters of this material.

Pathways towards net zero: Assessment of enablers and barriers in Nepal

Implementing mitigation measures to limit global temperatures to below 2 °C poses several challenges. Even though Nepal's global emission contribution remains minimal, the nation is committed to the net zero targets aligned with the Paris Agreement through Nationally Determined Contributions (NDC) and Long-Term Low greenhouse gas Emission Development Strategies (LT-LEDS) by 2045, where the biggest emitters like India, China and European Union (EU) aims to achieve net zero by 2070, 2060 and 2050 respectively. In this context, detailed and concrete insights on context specific factors that inhibit or enable Nepal’s mitigation measures to robust climate action are still at its infancy. We assessed the enablers and barriers to implementing mitigation measures across the energy, transport and forestry sectors. For this, an adapted version of the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC’s) Feasibility Assessment Framework is used, with data triangulated through an extensive literature review, as well as qualitative data collected through semi-structured interviews with sector-specific experts (n = 25), policymakers (n = 15) and industry managers (n = 10). Our results indicated that geophysical and topographical barriers are relatively less prominent. However, the institutional capacity and governance, and cross-sectional coordination inhibit the implementation of mitigation measures. Addressing institutional barriers, such as policy gaps, regulatory frameworks, capacity building and coordination challenges, is essential for unlocking the full potential of enablers and overcoming obstacles. This research serves as a valuable guide for countries like Nepal, helping them gain insights into the challenges they may encounter on their journey to net zero targets.

Furthermore, the implementation of sustainable building designs, energy-efficient technologies, and renewable energy sources in hospitality facilities helps to reduce their overall environmental effect. An additional crucial component of green tourism is water conservation. Water-saving methods, like low-flow fixtures and effective irrigation systems, are being implemented by accommodations to reduce water usage and safeguard nearby ecosystems. Waste management is essential to reaching sustainability targets in the tourism and hospitality industries. There is a growing movement to reduce the use of single-use plastics, encourage recycling, and establish composting techniques. Establishments promote the circular economy and lessen environmental deterioration by encouraging guests to dispose of waste responsibly. The effectiveness of projects aimed at promoting green tourism depends on community involvement. Forming alliances with nearby communities guarantees equitable distribution of economic gains and promotes a sense of collective accountability for environmental preservation. Moreover, maintaining the uniqueness of sites is aided by fostering cultural sensitivity and respect for local knowledge. Developing an environmental assessment framework for an insect farm operating in circular economy: The case study of a Montréal (Canada) mealworm farm

The concept of a circular food economy, particularly through insect farming using food waste, has gained increasing attention in recent years. This approach holds the potential to reduce the environmental impacts of food production by repurposing food waste as insect feed, while simultaneously offering an alternative source of protein. Although the environmental advantages of insect farming are well established, limited research exists on insect farming in colder regions with cleaner grid electricity, such as Quebec, Canada. In this paper, a framework is developed to evaluate the greenhouse gas emissions of a mealworm farm within a circular economy context. The benefits of circular economy practices are assessed through multiple different feed acquisition scenarios (virgin feed and feed diverted from composting, anaerobic digestion, and landfilling). Furthermore, the benefits of mealworm farming are assessed through a comparative analysis with other sources of protein. The framework consists of five stages: feed acquisition, transformation, heating, transportation, and fertilizer production. The results show that farming mealworms using virgin feed emits +14.94 Kg CO2eq/Kg protein. However, using diverted food waste as feed eliminates the need for conventional waste management and leads to a reduction of greenhouse gas emissions of −1.54, −2.48, and −16.39 Kg CO2eq/Kg protein for food waste diverted from composting, anaerobic digestion, and landfilling, respectively. This study highlights that mealworm farming with virgin feed generates lower greenhouse gas emissions compared to beef and pork and is on par with chicken production. Overall, this study demonstrates the environmental superiority of mealworm farming, whether or not food waste is utilized, in a Canadian context.

The role of AI capabilities in environmental management: Evidence from USA firms

This study investigates the role of Artificial Intelligence (AI) capabilities in influencing firms' greenwashing behaviors. We find a robust negative association between firms' AI capabilities and unrepresentative environmental disclosure. An instrumental variable approach is employed to establish causality. The effects are more pronounced for firms (1) with a greater exposure to regulatory climate risk, (2) managed by Republican-leaning managers, (3) with stronger governance structures, (4) possessing greater product market pricing power, (5) operating in multiple regions, and (6) with CEOs with higher pay-for-performance sensitivity. We further demonstrate that AI capabilities aid firms in transitioning to green operations through engaging in green and clean innovation. Finally, we find that AI capabilities correlate with lower greenhouse gas emissions. Overall, our findings shed light on the real impact of AI-related technologies in the energy industry.

Straw management adopted by large farms sustains grain yield but mitigates greenhouse gas emissions

ContextStraw incorporation is a globally recommended strategy for enhancing soil fertility. The methods for straw incorporation adopted by large farms usually differ from those used by small households, primarily because of variations in cost affordability. However, the effects of straw management on rice yields and greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions have not been well explored at different farming scales. ObjectivesThis study aims to compare the grain yield and greenhouse gas emissions under different straw management adopted by large farms than small households. MethodsA three-year field experiment using split-plot design, with straw management as the main plot and preceding tillage as the sub-plot, was conducted in a wheat-rice rotation system. Four treatments were given as rotary tillage with straw removal (RT-S), rotary tillage with straw incorporation (RT+S; small households), ploughing tillage with straw removal (PT-S), and ploughing tillage with straw incorporation (PT+S, large farms) in the preceding wheat season. Soil tillage in the rice season was the same, which was rotary tillage after irrigation. ResultsStraw incorporation significantly increased methane (CH4) and nitrous oxide (N2O) emissions, and 60%-62% of CH4 was emitted during the transplanting to jointing stages while 45–73% of N2O was emitted during the jointing to the booting stage. The stimulation of CH4 and N2O emissions by straw incorporation was closely correlated to enhanced soil organic carbon (SOC) and denitrification enzyme activity, respectively. In the last year, PT+S significantly reduced the global warming potential (GWP) compared to RT+S in the whole rice season, which can be attributed to the dramatically decline of CH4 emission, even though N2O emission was increased. Additionally, the decreased CH4 emission was mainly due to lower methanogenic activity, and the increased N2O emission was mainly resulted from lower nosZ abundance under PT+S compared to RT+S. Straw incorporation increased rice yield by 15.73% on average in the last two years, and rice yield of PT+S in the last year was significantly enhanced by 27.50%, resulting in a lower greenhouse gas intensity (GHGI) by 25.54% compared to RT+S. ConclusionStraw management practices adopted by large farms (PT+S) have the potential to synchronize high rice yields with lower GHG emissions compared to small households (RT+S). ImplicationsOur findings provide some evidence that large-scale agricultural organization may be helpful for sustainable rice production in China.
