Alternative Strategy for Development of Dielectric Calcium Copper Titanate-Based Electrolytes for Low-Temperature Solid Oxide Fuel Cells

Exploring novel nanostructural architecture of doubly doped ceria (Ce0.85Sr0.075Sm0.075O2-δ) and barium cerate (BaCeO3) as electrolytes for low-temperature solid oxide fuel cells

This study presents the development of a composite electrolyte for use in low-temperature (300–500 °C) Solid oxide Fuel Cells, focusing on a novel nanostructural design. The electrolyte comprises co-doped ceria (Ce0.85Sr0.075Sm0.075O2-δ, DCO) and barium cerate (BaCeO3, BCO), integrated into a unique nanostructural architecture. Initially, the constituent phases of the composite DCO and BCO are synthesized using a soft-chemical route separately, followed by their integration through liquid mixing technique in various compositions (90:10, 80:20, 70:30, 60:40, 50:50) of DCO:BCO in weight ratio. The composite structure is confirmed by X-ray diffraction, and refined the structural data by Rietveld refinement indicating a structural agreement with cubic and fluorite phases of DCO and BCO, respectively. Scanning Electron microscopy (SEM) and Energy Dispersive X-ray Analysis (EDAX) reveal a uniform distribution of two phases with fine size distribution below 50 nm. Transmission Electron microscopy (TEM) images illustrate the core-shell-like integration of the two phases. High-resolution TEM images indicate that the core consists of the DCO phase, while the shell is composed of the BCO phase. The microstructure of sintered pellets exhibits gas-tight densification, with grains dominated by the DCO phase and BCO phase dispersed along grain boundaries. The ionic conductivity of composite systems is extracted from Electrochemical impedance spectroscopy (EIS) studies, showing that DCO-BCO-40 exhibits the highest conductivity 1.132 × 10−3 Scm−1 @400 °C, which is higher than pristine DCO (0.34 × 10−4 Scm−1 @400 °C). Single cells fabricated using DCO-BCO-40 electrolytes deliver a power output of 280 mW cm−2 whereas pristine DCO showed 279 mW @500 °C. This study exhibits the potential of the core-shell-like nanostructural architecture of electrolytes in advancing Low-temperature solid oxide Fuel cell (LT-SOFC) technology and facilitating the transition toward sustainable energy systems.

Scaffold Infiltrated Cathodes for Low-Temperature Solid Oxide Fuel Cells.

Lowering the operating temperature of solid oxide fuel cells (SOFCs) and electrolysis cells (SOECs) to reduce system cost and increase lifetime is the key to widely deploy this highly efficient energy technology, but the high cathode polarization losses at low temperatures limit overall cell performance. Here we demonstrate that by engineering a universal ceria-based scaffold with infiltrated nanoscale electrocatalysts, a low cathode polarization <0.25 Ω·cm2 with remarkably high performance 1 W/cm2 at 550 °C is achieved. The combination of low processing and operating temperature restrains the nanosized electrocatalysts, not only allowing fast oxygen transport but also providing an essential electronically connective network to facilitate electrochemical reactions without requiring the high-temperature processing of a separate cathode layer. Moreover, excellent SOFC durability was demonstrated for over 500 h. This work shows a promising pathway to reduce processing/system costs with all scalable ceramic processing techniques for the future development of low-temperature SOFCs and SOECs.

Optimizing Bilayer Electrolyte Thickness Ratios for High-Performing Low-Temperature Solid Oxide Fuel Cells

Abstract Bilayer electrolytes for low-temperature solid oxide fuel cells (LT-SOFCs) offer the potential for higher power density by lowering the ohmic area specific resistance (ASR) and increasing the open circuit voltage (OCV) of mixed ionic/electronic conducting (MIEC) type electrolyte (e.g., GDC). However, optimizing the bilayer electrolyte thickness ratio is essential to achieve high power densities at low-temperatures (650-500℃). Herein we provide a systematic study of GDC/YCSB bilayer thickness ratios on anode-supported LT-SOFCs. In all cases the bilayer maximum power density (MPD) is higher than single-layer GDC based cells with reduced ohmic ASR values. Specifically, a high MPD of ~1 W/cm2 at 650℃ was achieved on a GDC(20 μm)/YCSB(12 μm) bilayer electrolyte based SOFC, which is 62% higher than single-layer GDC based SOFC (0.64 W/cm2) operating on humidified H2 as fuel. Such enhancement is due to the 9.3% improvement in OCV and 36% reduction in ohmic ASR values with the addition of the YCSB layer. The reduction in ohmic ASR of the bilayer electrolyte SOFCs is due to an increase of GDC electrical conductivity caused by the lower pO2 at the YCSB/GDC interface which must be considered in optimizing the thickness ratio of the bilayer electrolyte for achieving higher power density LT-SOFCs.

Thermally Stable Silver Cathode Covered by Samaria-Doped Ceria for Low-Temperature Solid Oxide Fuel Cells.

Samaria-doped ceria (SDC) overlayers were deposited on Ag cathodes by sputtering. The SDC sputtering time was varied to investigate the properties of the Ag-SDC overlayer cathode-coated fuel cells depending on the thickness of the SDC overlayers. Among the fabricated fuel cells, Ag with a 10-nm-thick SDC overlayer (Ag-SDC10) cathode-coated fuel cell exhibited the highest peak power density of 6.587 mW/cm2 at 450 °C, showing higher performance than a pristine Pt-coated fuel cell. Moreover, electrochemical impedance spectroscopy revealed that the Ag-SDC10 cathode-coated fuel cell significantly mitigated polarization loss originating from enhanced oxygen reduction reaction kinetics compared to the pristine Ag-coated fuel cell.

Self‐Assembled Perovskite Nanocomposite With Beneficial Lattice Tensile Strain as High Active and Durable Cathode for Low Temperature Solid Oxide Fuel Cell

AbstractThe sluggish kinetics of oxygen reduction reaction (ORR) at low temperatures and the fast degradation of the cathode are the main obstacles to the commercialization of solid oxide fuel cells (SOFCs). However, it is still very challenging to achieve both high catalytic activity and favorable stability for single‐phase materials. Herein, a highly active and durable nanocomposite cathode (Ba0.5Sr0.5)0.75Pr0.25Co0.575Fe0.3W0.125O3‐δ (BSPCFW) for low‐temperature SOFC (≤650 °C) is presented, which self‐assembles into two cubic perovskites: the simple perovskite Pr0.38Ba0.25Sr0.37Co0.62Fe0.38O3‐δ (PBSCF‐c) and the B‐site cations ordered double perovskite Ba1.30Sr0.70Co1.0Fe0.25W0.75O6‐δ (BSCFW‐c). The former PBSCF‐c serves as the highly conductive and active catalyst for ORR, while the latter BSCFW‐c with a large lattice parameter introduces a key beneficial lattice tensile strain into the PBSCF‐c phase through a coherent interface, which significantly promotes the ORR activity at low temperatures with the area specific resistance of 0.034 Ω cm2 at 650 °C, and the long‐term stability of 2 years storage and 1280 h operation in symmetrical cell. The introduction of the beneficial lattice tensile strain in self‐assembled composite catalysts is an effective way to synergistically enhance the electrochemical activity and durability of the electrode materials for electrochemical devices.

Achieving Fast Oxygen Reduction on Oxide Electrodes by Creating 3D Multiscale Micro-Nano Structures for Low-Temperature Solid Oxide Fuel Cells.

Fast oxygen reduction reaction (ORR) at the cathode is a key requirement for the realization of low-temperature solid oxide fuel cells (SOFCs). While the design of three-dimensional (3D) structures has emerged as a new and promising approach to improving the electrochemical performance of SOFC cathodes, achieving versatile structures and structural stability is still challenging. In this study, we demonstrate a novel architectural design for a superior cathode with fast ORR activity. By employing a completely new fabrication process comprising a 3D printing technique and pulsed laser deposition (PLD), we design 3D La0.8Sr0.2CoO3-δ (LSC) micro-nano structures with the desired shape. 3D-printed yttria-stabilized ZrO2 (YSZ) microstructures significantly increase the ratio of surface area to volume while maintaining suitable ionic conductivity comparable to that of single-crystalline YSZ substrates. Scanning electron microscopy and energy dispersive X-ray microanalysis reveal the formation of crack- or void-free YSZ microstructures and the uniform deposition of LSC films by PLD on the YSZ microstructures. The 3D LSC micro-nano structures show significantly enhanced oxygen surface exchange coefficients (kchem) extracted from electrical conductivity relaxation (ECR) measurements by up to 3 orders of magnitude relative to the bulk LSC. Furthermore, electrochemical impedance spectroscopy measurements verify the kchem values from ECR and no directional difference in the measured ORR activity depending on the shape of 3D microstructures. The dramatic enhancement of the ORR activity of LSC is attributed to the increased film surface areas resulting from the 3D YSZ microstructures.

Nanocrystal Engineering of Thin-Film Yttria-Stabilized Zirconia Electrolytes for Low-Temperature Solid-Oxide Fuel Cells.

To overcome significantly sluggish oxygen-ion conduction in the electrolytes of low-temperature solid-oxide fuel cells (SOFCs), numerous researchers have devoted considerable effort to fabricating the electrolytes as thin as possible. However, thickness is not the only factor that affects the electrolyte performance; roughness, grain size, and internal film stress also play a role. In this study, yttria-stabilized zirconia (YSZ) was deposited via a reactive sputtering process to fabricate high-performance thin-film electrolytes. Various sputtering chamber pressures (5, 10, and 15 mTorr) were investigated to improve the electrolytes. As a result, high surface area, large grain size, and residual tensile stress were successfully obtained by increasing the sputtering pressure. To clarify the correlation between the microstructure and electrolyte performance, a YSZ thin-film electrolyte was applied to anodized aluminum oxide-supported SOFCs composed of conventional electrode materials which are Ni and Pt as the anode and the cathode, respectively. The thin-film SOFC with YSZ deposited at 15 mTorr exhibited the lowest ohmic resistance and, consequently, the highest maximum power density (493 mW/cm2) at 500 °C whose performance is more than five times higher than that of the cell with YSZ deposited at 5 mTorr (94.1 mW/cm2). Despite the basic electrode materials, exceptionally high performance at low operating temperature was achieved via controlling the single fabrication condition for the electrolyte.

They operate at hightemperatures, typically between 800°C-1000°C, limiting their utility. The primary challengein developing these fuel cells is synthesizing strong biogenic electrodes that function at lowtemperatures, maintaining high performance. This experimental study examines how eco-friendly,facile, and novel techniques for synthesis can be used to make robust, effective, and affordableelectrodes for low-temperature recyclable SOFCs (LT-SOFC). A green approachwas implemented by using biomass waste and biochar, specifically coconut shells and ricehusks, as raw materials. The synthesis comprised the hydrothermal carbonization of biomassprecursors, such as lignocellulosic nanostructures, and carbon nanotubes under controlledconditions, followed by activation with potassium hydroxide(KOH). The resulting electrodeshad a large surface area, catalytic oxygen reduction, excellent conductivity, and sufficientelectrochemical performance. The efficacy of the biomass-derived electrodes was enhancedby employing transition metal oxides as electrocatalysts, such as nickel oxide(NiO) andcobalt oxide(Co3O4). The morphology and elemental composition of the electrode materialwere studied using the scanning electron microscope(SEM) and energy-dispersive X-rayspectroscopy(EDS). Electrochemical impedance spectroscopy(EIS)was used to examine theelectrochemical properties of cell electrolytes. Findings demonstrated that the hydrothermalstrategy led to the formation of homogeneous and porous electrode structures with highgalvanic activity. The biodegradable LT-SOFC stack achieved an optimal power density of346mW/cm2 at around 550°C, indicating a substantial increase over previous experiments.Our results have significant economic consequences for the expansion of sustainable andrenewable energy innovations in industry and nanotechnology, providing auxiliary power inautomobiles and hydrogen generation. Greenhouse gas emissions and carbon footprint can bediminished by using biomass waste streams as feedstocks, reducing the need for fossil fuels.The outcomes of this research provide important insights into the development, challenges,and future possibilities of biomass-derived electrodes, and minimal temperature electrolytesfor stable SOFCs. Such bilayer electrolytes offer the potential for developing high performing LT-SOFCs by lowering the ohmic area specific resistance (ASR), and by improving the open circuit voltage (OCV) of mixed ionic/electronic conducting (MIEC) type electrolyte (e.g., GDC). However, optimizing the thickness ratio of the bilayer electrolyte is essential to achieve high power densities at low-temperatures (650-500 ℃). Here, we made a systematic study by varying the thickness ratios between GDC and YCSB((Bi0.75Y0.25)1.86Ce0.14O3±δ) bilayer electrolytes on an anode-supported LT-SOFCs, in all cases, the maximum power density (MPD) of the bilayer electrolyte cells is higher than pristine GDC based cells with reduced ohmic ASR values. Specifically, a high MPD of ~1 W/cm2 at 650 ℃ was achieved on a GDC(20μm) / YCSB(12μm) bilayer electrolyte based SOFC, which is 62% higher than pristine GDC based SOFC (0.64 W/cm2) operating on humidified H2 as fuel. Such enhancement is due to the 9.3% improvement in OCV (from 0.791 to 0.865 V) and a considerable 36% reduction in ohmic ASR values (from 0.094 to 0.069 Ω.cm2). Such reduction in ohmic ASR of the GDC/YCSB bilayer electrolyte SOFCs is due to the increase of GDC electrical conductivity as a result of lower pO2 at the interface of YCSB and GDC, and hence, must be considered in optimizing the thickness ratio of the bilayer electrolyte for achieving higher power density SOFCs. Enhanced Proton Transport of β″-Al2O3 Modified by LiAlO2 as a High-Performance Electrolyte for a Low-Temperature Solid Oxide Fuel Cell and an Electrolyzer.

β″-Al2O3 has been proven as a fast ionic conductor in solid batteries due to its unique structure. In this work, β″-Al2O3 was further modified by LiAlO2 and employed as the electrolyte material for low-temperature solid oxide fuel cells and electrolyzers, i.e., proton-conducting ceramic fuel cells and electrolysis cells, named as PCFC and PCEC, respectively. At 550 °C, thanks to this superior electrolyte with a remarkable conductivity of 0.161 S·cm-1, the PCFC reached a high power density up to 1029 mW·cm-2, and the PCEC demonstrated a significant current density of 1.49 A·cm-2 at a low operation voltage of 2.0 V. It has been found that the introduction of the LiAlO2 phase into β″-Al2O3 reduces the total impedance, while it increases the oxygen vacancy concentration and thus promotes the proton transport process with the reduced activation energy. This work provides a new approach for exploring two-dimensional materials with high-ionic conductivity that can be applied for solid oxide fuel cells and water electrolyzers and more wider power-to-X devices such as electrosynthesis for green ammonia production.

Synergistic Electrochemical Properties of Graphene Incorporated LCZ-Oxide Cathode for Low Temperature Solid Oxide Fuel Cell

Mixed metallic oxides are getting increasing attention as novel electrode materials for energy conversion devices. However, low mixed ionic-electronic conductivity and high operating temperature hamper the practical applications of these devices. This study reports an effective strategy to improve the conductivity and performance of the fuel cell at low temperature by partially incorporating graphene in the Li0.1Cu0.2Zn0.7-oxide (LCZ) composite. The proposed cathode material is synthesized via the cost effective conventional solid-state route. Graphene incorporated LCZ shows excellent performance, which is attributed to the favorable charge transport paths offering low area-specific resistance. An X-ray diffractometer (XRD) and scanning electron microscope (SEM) are employed for microstructural and surface morphological analyses, respectively. Electrical conductivities of all the materials are determined by the DC four probe method, and interestingly, LCZ-1.5% graphene exhibits an excellent conductivity of 3.5 S/cm in air atmosphere at a temperature of 450 °C with a minimum value of 0.057 Ωcm2 area-specific resistance (ASR) that demonstrates significantly good performance. Moreover, the three-layer fuel cell device is fabricated using sodium carbonated Sm0.2Ce0.8O (NSDC) as an electrolyte, which can operate at low temperatures exhibiting open circuit voltage 0.95 V and shows a peak power density, i.e., 267.5 mW/cm2 with hydrogen as the fuel.

A Self-Crystallized Nanofibrous Ni-GDC Anode by Magnetron Sputtering for Low-Temperature Solid Oxide Fuel Cells.

The optimum composition ratio of the anode cermet (Ni-GDC) for solid oxide fuel cells (SOFCs) varies because the electron-collecting mechanism is different depending on its applications. A Co-sputtering method facilitates ratio control with sputtering power adjustment. However, there is a practical issue with fabricating anode cermet with various ratios attributed to the large sputtering yield gap of the metal target, Ni, and the ceramic target, gadolinia-doped ceria (GDC). Therefore, in this study, a Gd-Ce metal alloy was applied instead of GDC to match the sputtering rate with that of Ni, which enables a wide ratio range achievement. A thin film of Gd-Ce oxidized after deposition and successfully transformed to crystallized GDC under a SOFC operation environment. X-ray diffraction (XRD) and high-resolution transmission electron microscopy (HRTEM) confirmed its crystallinity, and the film deposited with various power ratios was sputtered on the ScSZ electrolyte pellet to clarify the optimum Ni-GDC ratio for thin-film SOFCs. Last, the Ni-GDC was applied to anodized aluminum oxide (AAO)-supported SOFCs to maximize the performance. The performance change according to the thickness of Ni-GDC was identified, and the best performance among them was 638 mW/cm2 at 500 °C.

One-pot impregnation to construct nanoparticles loaded scaffold cathode with enhanced oxygen reduction performance for LT-SOFCs

Constructing nanoparticles loaded scaffold cathode is an effective strategy to reduce the polarization resistance of cathode for Low-temperature Solid Oxide Fuel Cells (LT-SOFCs). Here, self-assembled Ce0.9Gd0.1O2-δ (GDC) microrods were prepared by liquid precipitation method, and used for constructing cathode scaffold. There are interconnected micron level pores with the porosity up to 81.03% in the cathode scaffold, benefitting for directly impregnating solution and even nanoparticles, and gaseous oxygen transport under cell testing. The electrochemical impedance spectra and corresponding distribution of relaxation times results reveal that the porous and continuous distribution of La0.6Sr0.4Co0.2Fe0.8O3−δ (LSCF) nanoparticles loaded on GDC scaffold via one-pot impregnation could significantly provide the rapid gas diffusion, abundant adsorption sites, enough reactive sites and unobstructed ionic/electronic conduction to obtain the excellent oxygen reduction performance under lower operating temperatures. The cathode with the GDC scaffold impregnated the LSCF nanoparticles only one time exhibits the total polarization resistance of 0.293 Ω·cm2, significantly less than 0.615 Ω·cm2 of the traditional cathode at 600 °C. The porous nanoparticles loaded scaffold cathode with simple preparation process and excellent oxygen reduction performance is expected to promote the further development of LT-SOFCs.

Solid oxide fuel cells (SOFCs) are attracting attention as next-generation energy conversion devices due to their high efficiency, eco-friendliness, and scalability. However, the high operation temperature of conventional SOFCs (> 800°C) has posed several practical issues such as thermal degradation and limited material choice. To overcome this limitation, low-temperature SOFC (LT-SOFC, operation temperature <600°C) is actively being researched these days. Ni-YSZ (nickel-yttria stabilized zirconia) is commonly used as anode material in SOFCs. Ni-YSZ anodes are reasonably conductive at high operating temperatures and stable under harsh reducing conditions. However, at lower operating temperatures, the low conductivity of Ni-YSZ becomes an issue for use as an anode. Using doped ceria instead of YSZ is considered an alternative because the doped ceria has higher conductivity compared to YSZ due to the co-existence of multivalent states, i.e., Ce3+ and Ce4+, which can be further improved by doping. Moreover, if one adopts a carefully designed anode structure, e.g., gradient structure, the electrochemical performance of Ni-doped ceria anode can be further improved. Employing nanoscale components, e.g., thin films, are also one of the strategies to improve the electrode kinetics at the low operating temperature of LT-SOFCs. Thin film electrodes with short electronic and ionic paths as well as high surface area contribute to low ohmic and activation resistances. While high uniformity, reproducibility and throughout are practical concerns in thin film fabrication, reactive sputtering, which can produce uniform ceramic thin films from metal target in reactive gas environment in high reproducibility ad deposition rate, is a suitable candidate for thin film components for SOFCs. In this study, we fabricate a Ni-Samaria doped ceria(SDC) gradient anode by reactive co-sputtering. We prepare and characterize the cells with homogeneous and gradient-structured Ni-SDC thin film anodes. The gradient Ni-SDC thin film anode is composed of three layers, whose compositions are graded in a way that the Ni content increases from bottom (near electrolyte-anode interface) to top (anode top-surface). Possibly due to the combination of facilitated ionic conduction near electrolyte-anode interface and higher catalytic activity at anode surface, we observe the improved anode kinetics with lower activation resistance in the cell with gradient-structured Ni-SDC anode compared to the one with homogeneous anode.

Methanol Fueled Low Temperature Solid Oxide Fuel Cell with Pt-SDC Anodes

A low-temperature solid oxide fuel cell (LT-SOFC) is a next-generation energy conversion device and has advantages of high energy efficiency, fast start up and shut down and eco-friendliness. In addition, since it has the advantage of being able to use various fuels such as hydrogen, alcohol, and methane gas, research is being actively conducted in recent years. However, LT-SOFC using hydrogen as a fuel has difficulties in storing and transporting fuel, making it difficult to apply as a portable device. On the other hand, methanol fuel is an attractive alternative fuel because it is easier to transport and store than hydrogen fuel and has a high volumetric energy density. However, when methanol is applied to LT-SOFC, there is a disadvantage in performance due to the complicated oxidation process and CO poisoning. Complex methanol oxidation reaction (MOR) and CO poisoning reduce the performance and durability of fuel cells. Therefore, it is important to use a catalyst that can prevent CO poisoning and improve the oxidation reaction of methanol. Pt is an effective catalyst for methanol decomposition and is one of the materials widely used in direct methanol fuel cell (DMFC). However, there is a problem in that it is vulnerable to CO generated during the methanol oxidation process. It is known that CO is adsorbed on the Pt surface, blocks the active site, and reduces catalytic activity. Therefore, alloying Pt with samaria-doped ceria (SDC) with high oxygen storage capacity (OSC) and good OH generation capacity can be effective to reduce CO poisoning and coking.In this study, we prepared the cells with Pt-SDC cermet anodes with the Pt volume percent of 69 (Pt 0.69), 83 (Pt 0.83), 92 (Pt 0.92), and 95 (Pt 0.95) volume% by varying Pt and SDC powers in the co-sputtering process. In the electrochemical impedance spectroscopy (EIS), ohmic resistance was similar between all samples; on the other hand, activation resistance was measured to be 24.0, 19.5, 31.8, 30.8, and 53.0 Ω∙cm2 at Pt 0.69, Pt 0.83, Pt 0.92, Pt 0.95, and Pt 1 samples, respectively, confirming the lowest activation resistance at Pt 0.83. We speculate that the MOR is improved by the increase of triple phase boundary (TPB) sites and the facilitation of bifunctional CO oxidation mechanisms with higher content of SDC up to 17 mol% (Pt 0.83). However, in the anode with excessive SDC content (31 mol%, Pt 0.69), the Pt is oxidized to form PtO2, lowering the catalytic activity.
