Radio-Frequency Identification Technology in Libraries. Integration of Library Management Systems into Global Identification Systems

The main development trends of radio-frequency identification (RFID) and problems of standardization with respect to library technologies are discussed. Approaches to library RFID systems integrated into the global network of Electronic Product Code based on a harmonized normative regulatory system are proposed.

Designing and Implementing of An Online Library Managment System

One of the most important fields in education is library. The library is a fast-growing system. The traditional methods of maintaining it are no longer dynamic and efficient. For expeditious retrieval and dissemination of information and better service for the clientele, an application of modern techniques has become absolutely indispensable. A properly computerized library will help its users with quick and prompt services. Therefore, this Paper produces an efficient Online Library Management System (OLMS) for university campus. The main purpose of this Paper is to design and implement the (OLMS). The OLMS consists of two modules: External Pages Module and Internal Pages Module. The first module is with limited operation such as (viewing, searching and registration request). The second module for the personal account can do the operations like (storing, searching, viewing, borrowing, downloading and etc.). The system controllers are two types. The first one is the (Co_Admin) which can manage library operation. The second one is the administrator which can create and manage university libraries and also can create (Co_Admin) for each faculty library. The system can generate different types of reports and can also calculate the (fines) on the users, also any request or response will be done by E-Mail and short message service (SMS). The OLMS was designed and implemented by using (MySQL, HTML, CSS, PHP, JavaScript, JQuery, Ajax and Bootstrap) techniques. The system was tested in two phases: the first phase identifies the views and preferences of users with the specification of the system outputs, depending on the requirements of the proposed system. The second phase measures the abilities of the system through System Usability Scale (SUS) technique with the contribution of 26 potential users of the system and the recorded rate 76% as overall satisfaction of OLMS implementation. A reasonable degree of compatibility and harmony between the university and the system requirements of application has been found in the University of Zakho.

Personalised reading for pleasure with digital libraries: towards a pedagogy of practice and design

ABSTRACTThis paper discusses the pedagogical practice of developing reading for pleasure in pre- schools and primary phase settings through the lens of one key dimension of twenty-first-century reading: personalisation. It draws on a series of studies and examples to identify, address and problematise human- and digitally mediated personalised reading for pleasure. Through a content analysis of the key features of current digital library systems, it shows how these increasingly popular systems position teachers as librarians, curators and monitors, and undermine their potential roles as listeners, mentors and co-readers in order to foster children’s personal response to texts. Through a theory-driven approach it identifies ways in which current design limitations of library management systems can be addressed and from which their effective application and use can develop. This conceptual elaboration, which combines contemporary reading theories with the affordances of digital personalisation, provides new insights concerning personalisation in digital library systems.

“At least we have something to discuss during lunch…” Learning on Demand in a Learning Institution when Implementing a New Library Management System

This article investigates how staff and management in Norwegian academic libraries have experienced the implementation of the new library management system Alma. As a new library management system is introduced, the need for learning on demand emerges. An anonymous survey was sent to all academic libraries in Norway, resulting in a total of 626 responses. This article presents the findings from this survey and provides some reflections on how a firm grip on knowledge management could have helped make such a transition easier.

OpenBiblio: a free and open source integrated library management system that answers small libraries’ automation needs

Abstract Purpose -This paper sought to assess the suitability of Openbilio as a free and open source integrated library management system that answers small libraries' automation needs considering the fact that many free and open source integrated library management systems exit that require more skills and resources which these libraries do not have. Methodology -The study was a qualitative technical paper on OpenBiblio. Qualitative data through documents analysis on OpenBiblio was collected and analyzed in light of its strengths and weaknesses. Secondly, the author used his personal experience of working with OpenBiblio to evaluate its suitability for use among small libraries. Findings- The findings show that OpenBiblio is suitable for small libraries because it is easy to install and configure as compared to Koha, Evergreen and other integrated library management systems which require immense technical knowledge of Linux, MYSQL, HTML and CSS. Further, it has also been observed that OpenBiblio can run on a small computer with at least 512Mb of RAM and can run on both Windows and Linux. The study also discovered that OpenBiblio has four modules (Cataloguing, Circulation, OPAC, and Patron management that represent the core functions of small libraries; thus it computerizes the main functions of the library. OpenBiblio was also found to comply with main library standards such as Z39.50 and MARC 21. The paper however discovered that OpenBiblio has limited documentation on the Internet that makes it difficult for new beginners to install and configure it. Originality/value - Very few scholarly papers exist on OpenBiblio as automation software suited small libraries. Many treatises exist only on giant free and open source library management systems such as Koha, ABCD and Evergreen. This paper therefore provides information for small libraries that wish to automate their operations using OpenBiblio. Implications to small libraries- Small libraries should consider adopting and use OpenBiblio to automate their operations as it is easy to install and use . The library as one of professional institutions develops automation system as form of the technology implementation. Senayan Library Management System or SLiMS is one of Free Open Source Softwares (FOSS) based web and used to build automation system in the library. Various service activities in the library can be implemented by using SLiMS. Library of Adab and Humaniora Faculty of UIN Alauddin, Makassar makes effort to implement the library automation system. This research wishes knowing more the automation system implementation, what service activities which have implemented and haven`t yet in automation system implementation, and the obstacles faced by Library of Adab and Humaniora Faculty of UIN Alauddin in automation system implementation.

Embracing Changing Technology and New Technical Services Workflows in Migrating to a Next-Generation Library Management System

ABSTRACTIn 2015, Radford University’s McConnell Library migrated to OCLC Online Computer Library Center, Inc. (OCLC)’s WorldShare Management Services, relinquishing three legacy systems in the process. As a result, many of the Collection and Technical Services Department’s workflows changed considerably beginning months before the contract was signed. An extensive temporary departmental focus on data clean-up and training was required while maintaining core duties. New opportunities for collaboration and communication emerged. In light of developing new workflows, NASIG Core Competencies for Electronic Resources Librarians and NASIG Core Competencies for Print Serials Management were consulted in revising positions. What follows is the process, management, communication, and outcomes involved in migrating to a new next-generation library management system.

When ERM Met Alma: The Intricacies of Content Management in a Shared Consortia Landscape

ABSTRACTIn 2013, after nearly two decades of operating in a distributed legacy Integrated Library System (ILS) environment on local servers, the Orbis Cascade Alliance, a consortium of public and private academic libraries in Washington, Oregon, and Idaho, began a two-year-long process to migrate its 37 members to a shared implementation of Ex Libris's cloud-based Alma library management system (LMS) and Primo discovery interface. Although much has been written on electronic resource management (ERM) functionality at an institution level, little has been written on serials and ERM functionality and workflows within a shared consortial environment. This article discusses the challenges and opportunities of implementing a consortial-based LMS, with particular emphasis on serials and ERM functionality. Key migration issues related to serials control, acquisitions, licensing, administration, cataloging, statistics, and interoperability are examined at the institutional and large-scale networked levels. Benefits and limitations of using a shared consortial cloud-based LMS are explored, and the overall capabilities of the Alma LMS for electronic resource management are reviewed.

Design of books inventory with RFID antenna in library management system

A 915 MHz printed radio-frequency-identification (RFID) antennas with the characteristics of good gain and omnidirectional beam wave is constructed and evaluated in this study. The objective is to find out their best reading rates for providing effective wireless communications among RFID antenna during the library book inventory process. And an optimal library inventory system which is based on electromagnetic identification (EMID) technology is proposed, which is constructed to find the optimal tag location for a book, test the tag readability for bookshelves, and connect a couple of multi-layer bookshelves with multiplexers and updat the tag reading status in the database of the computer terminal. The fabricated antenna reader and the proposed system are embedded into different locations of bookshelves and tested at the library of Cheng Shiu University in Taiwan. According to the experimental results, the designed prototype of the antenna reader has the characteristics of the directional radiation pattern, good gain, simple shape, low cost and is easy to be integrated into the bookshelf. And the designed library inventory system can authenticate the location of a book automatically. They can benefit administrating librarians with the capabilities of decreasing the library inventory processing time and reducing the possibility of the books being misplaced.

Journey from Library Management System (LMS) to KOHA by Government College University Libraries, Lahore

Libraries around the world are using the technology in best possible ways to satisfy their users through efficient and effective library services. The paper aims to discuss the process of KOHA implementation in Government College University (GCU) Libraries Lahore, while replacing the Library Management Software (LMS) implemented in 1999. The article discusses the implementation of Koha in a narrative style. In first phase KOHA was installed on testing basis on one computer and its different modules were evaluated as per their functions in context of the requirements of GCU Libraries. After satisfactory results a journal was placed formally for notes taking purpose during the step by step process of KOHA implementation for the required results. On the basis of testing phase, the technical issues were addressed and Koha implementation strategy was chalked out, employed and resulted as the live server of KOHA. The study discussed the major technical problems that were encountered in the implementation of KOHA. The authors assume that other libraries who are implementing Koha also face such problems. However, these technicalities are not disclosed and remain unaddressed. The study addresses these technical issues and offers solutions. The study offers insight that is valuable for Pakistani librarians at large and other libraries in general which are in the process of implementing Koha for automation.

KONTRIBUSI MODAL SOSIAL DALAM PENGEMBANGAN OTOMASI PERPUSTAKAAN: STUDI KASUS KOMUNITAS SLiMS (SENAYAN LIBRARY MANAGEMENT SYSTEM) YOGYAKARTA

Today the implementation of information technology in libraries has become a basic need to organize the information, not least in Indonesia. Lack of economic capital (fund) and intellectual capital (human resources that have IT educational background) cause many library in Indonesia can not be able to buy or self develop the information technology. However SLiMS attend like a panacea, which capable of treating and eliminating the limitations of most libraries in Indonesia. SLiMS is an open source software for the Library Management that can be downloaded and implemented for free. In addition Slims rarely have the power owned by a software (information systems) that is a SLiMS User Community. In Indonesia, SLiMS User Community has mushrooming in various regions across Indonesia, one of them in Yogyakarta. Growth and development of SLiMS User Community in Yogyakarta is a manifestation of social capital for the library with lack of information technology implementation. The purpose of this study is to reveal the values and norms are upheld by the Yogyakarta SLiMS User Community that foster social capital which drives community activities as an agent who eliminate the lack of economic capital and intellectual capital that suffered by many libraries in Indonesia. The method used is qualitative method with phenomenological approach. The results showed that the values and norms are upheld together by the Yogyakarta SLiMS User Community is becoming a agent of change of the library conditions in Indonesia, to contribute the automation development in Indonesia. That value and norms are expressed through the sinau bareng. Through sinau bareng, they were learning together to implement SLiMS. Sinau bareng was held each month by a Yogyakarta SLiMS User Community. it became the antidote the lack of libraries. So it will bring justice for all types of libraries to have the right to fulfi ll their basic needs of implementing information technology as library management system.

Modernization of central library and establishment of an e-resource center at Chittagong Veterinary and Animal Sciences University (CVASU): a case study

Purpose The purpose of this paper is to explain how the author carried out the modernization project of the central library and establishment of an e-resource center at Chittagong Veterinary and Animal Sciences University (CVASU), stated the implementation of integrated library system (ILS) in a library and encouraged library professionals by sharing practical experience to implement modernization project in their libraries. Design/methodology/approach The paper describes the authors’ practical experiences regarding implementation of the modernization project of the central library and establishment of an e-resource center at CVASU using open-source ILS and library management systems (LMSs). Findings The study reveals practical and systematic approach toward implementation of the modernization project starting from the project proposals, fund release, vendor selection, mode of procurement, manpower selection, selection of ILS and LMS solution to the library’s day-to-day activities and a series of communication with the funding organization. Practical implications This paper will help librarians implement the modernization project in a practical way to their libraries. This paper stands as a unique case study for the new applicant and for those who have got University Grants Commission funding for library modernization. Originality/value The paper provides a practical experience in the implementation of a library modernization project complying all the procedures of funding agencies. The content of the paper was not published before in any form other than the internal workshop and presentation.

NEXT-GENERATION CATALOGUES: HOW ARE THE ACADEMIC LIBRARIES IN KENYA FARING?

The library catalogue has changed over the years from a card catalogue to its electronic successor, the Online Public Access Catalogue (OPAC), to what is called the next-generation library catalogue, sometimes referred to as the library 2.0 catalogue or ‘the third-generation catalogue’. The purpose of this study was to investigate the current state of catalogues in academic libraries in Kenya and to evaluate whether these libraries have incorporated features of the next-generation catalogues in their OPACs. The study applied a checklist of features commonly identified as characteristics of the next-generation catalogue to examine whether the OPACs of university libraries in Kenya are comparable to the next-generation library catalogue. The findings of the study showed that libraries in Kenya have made some progress towards transforming their OPACs to the next-generation catalogue but have not reached the ideal. None of the OPACs has all the features evaluated. Progress has been made with features, such as enhanced content, simple keyword search and faceted navigation. However, none of the catalogues has federated searching capabilities. The study also found out that close to half of the libraries which have their OPACs available online are using Koha as their Library Management System (LMS). This article provides valuable information for library policy makers interested in modernising their catalogues or acquiring discovery tools for their institution. The article may also be a useful tool for evaluating OPACs modules of the integrated LMS, especially for libraries that are in the process of selecting a suitable LMS.

Delivering a shared library management system for Wales

Purpose A case study of the Wales Higher Education Libraries Forum (WHELF) project to procure and implement a shared library management system (LMS) for all universities in Wales, together with the National Health Service Libraries in Wales and the National Library of Wales. In particular, the purpose of this paper is to explore the drivers to this collaboration, outline the benefits achieved and the framework to realise further benefits. Design/methodology/approach Case study review of the process, together with a review of literature on consortia and LMSs. Findings WHELF has developed into a more mature consortium through procuring and implementing a shared LMS. The process has delivered tangible benefits and is driving more work to realise further benefits. Research limitations/implications As the WHELF Shared LMS project is only nearing the end of the implementation phase, many of the anticipated operational benefits cannot be reported. Practical implications Useful case study for other consortia or potential consortia. Originality/value WHELF is in vanguard of consortia developments in the UK, and this is the first case study of the project.

Developing Plugin e-DDC as an Additional Application for Senayan Library Management System with PHP Language Programming and MySQL Database

Senayan Library Management System, usually called as SLiMS dan e-DDC (electronic Dewey Decimal Classification), is an application for library that now is used widely because it is easy to use, guaranteed of updating from the provider, and free. SLiMs and e-DDC is actually two separated application, but in the practice, it is possible and recommended to be used together. SLiMS is used as a tool of library automation, meanwhile e-DDC functions to help finding collection classification number. Some users of SLiMS and e-DDC have suggested to develop SLiMS that is integral with e-DDC, so the use of both application can be practical which can make the librarian easier to manage the library. Based on the suggestion, the writer and e-DDC team finally created and designed additional application which is called plugin in SLiMS automation system that contained e-DDC. The plugin was created using PHP MySQL and MySQL database. The purpose of this paper is to enrich the reference of library application development, especially that is based on Free Open Source Software (FOSS). The method used is Research and Development method. The result was the Plugin e-DDC for SLiMS was finished and released on May 2, 2015 to celebrate National Education Day.

Developing a Comprehensive Library Management System for Tamale Polytechnic

The numerous problems of borrowing and returning books and maintaining comprehensive user profiles in the Tamale Polytechnic’s library using the current manual system is seriously affecting the overall productivity of the facility. The impact of which is the poor and inefficient delivery of service to members. Since issuing of books is done by several librarians, details of which librarian issued or received a borrowed book is always not accurate and can easily be manipulated by individuals with their personal interests. A successful solution would be a computerized System for monitoring all transactions, members, user accounts, keep proper records of login details of users as well as effective generation of reports. All transactions that occur within the library are recorded automatically. It also has a fine and ad-hoc report generation mechanisms.

Advantages and Limitations of Open Source Software for Library Management System Functions: The Experience of Libraries in India

ABSTRACTThe explosion of availability of information on the Internet requires that libraries evolve into value-added information providers, rather than mere curators of collections. Modern libraries need to stay relevant to a diverse, technologically savvy patron base and to facilitate and add value to the research community, while facing significant resource constraints. To face these challenges, libraries need to embrace digital technologies and library management systems (LMS) in order to work smart and achieve more with less. While LMS systems have been around for decades, libraries can explore the new frontier by embracing open source solutions, like open source software (OSS) library systems, which are free to acquire. They need to collaborate with computer experts and become technologically savvy to harness the full power of OSS solutions to meet the specific needs of the library and patron base. This article provides an overview of the availability, benefits, and drawbacks of various LMS systems and OSS variants, drawing from experiences in the present Indian context.

Analyzing Application of Information Communication Technologies and Use for Information Provision by Library Staff of Mount Kenya University Library, Kisii Campus

Information and Communication Technologies (ICTs) play a crucial role in creating access to and utilization of library information resources and services through the use of library management systems leading to the current stampede to train and refresh library staff skills in order to promote and engender service delivery. When academic libraries integrate ICTs in acquisition, processing, storage, dissemination and accession to their holdings, user needs are addressed quickly and on time. In this study the researchers sought to determine the application of Information Communication Technologies (ICTs) and Use for information provision by library staff of the Mount Kenya University Library, Kisii Campus. The target population was Mount Kenya university library staff and students. A survey research design aimed at identifying users' views and interpretation of the application and use of ICTs in the provision of library information resources and services. Stratified sampling was used to identify the students-respondents and purposive sampling used to select the library staff. While questionnaires were placed to collect the data from students, library staff respondents were interviewed. The study sample comprised four hundred (320) library users and staff out of a population of three thousand five hundred and twenty eight (1456). The study showed among other findings, that there are improved access and use of library resources and services through the use ICTs in Mount Kenya University, Kisii Campus.
