The use of slang today is very influential on Christian teenagers, and has a complex impact, depending on the context and how it is used. In Christian circles we need to use language that can be understood and understood. Christian teens may feel the need to use slang to feel more connected to their peers. Language is a part of culture. Slang is typical teenage language, the words are changed in such a way, so that it can only be understood among them, it can be understood by almost all Christian teenagers who are reached by the mass media, even though these terms develop, change and increase almost every day. Slang is a language that has unique terms, while the second definition makes it clearer that those who use this language are teenagers and this language will continue to develop. The characteristics of slang, the factors supporting the rise of slang among Christian teenagers, the influence of slang on everyday language and the impact of the use of slang today.

Language Acculturation of Javanese and Madurese Communities: Slang Variations of Pendalungan Teenagers in Jember Regency

This study aims to explain the formation and reasons for the use of slang language of Pendalungan teenagers in Jember Regency. This research used descriptive qualitative method. The research data is in the form of words from Javanese and Madurese acculturation that contain slang language forms and spoken by teenagers in daily communication. Data collection used observation technique supported by listen-engage-note technique. The data analysis technique used is the commensurate (padan) method and the agih method. Based on the results of this study, there are four categories of slang variation formation in terms of morphological formation, namely: (1) Abbreviations, such as the abbreviation LA and the acronym Kardiman. (2) New Words, such as cungucui, pacapa, crème, and tompes. (3) Reduplication, such as ya megaya, and rep sekarep. (4) Inserts, such as cellepnya and ngabesnya. The reasons for using slang consist of five reasons, namely (1) familiarity, (2) solid and concrete, (3) user creativity, (4) group recognition, and (5) enriching vocabulary. The conclusion of the research findings shows the formation of slang language by absorbing Javanese and Madurese as well as new words that are different from the original language. Pendalungan teenagers in Jember district dominantly use slang language which is mixed with Javanese, Madurese, and Indonesian daily language.

Survival Language of Teenagers in Coastal Families in Sandi Village, Wakatobi District

This research aims to describe the curses used by teenagers in the coastal area of Sandi Village, South Kaledupa District, Wakatobi Regency. The study is expected to contribute to the researcher's knowledge in the field of linguistics. The research data consists of utterances containing curses. The informants for this study were 15 individuals, comprising 8 females and 7 males aged between 12 to 18 years. This field research utilized a qualitative descriptive approach with data collection techniques including recording, listening, and note-taking. The study reveals that there are two forms of curses used by teenagers in Sandi Village, namely curses in the form of words and phrases. Curses used by teenagers in coastal families of Sandi Village can be categorized into three types: first, curses in the form of words, consisting of 14 words such as Pei (fool), Deppe (snub-nosed), kumbou (monitor lizard), Tajo (genitals), Kaffiri (infidel), Kajilo (cross-eyed), Dhobba (fat), Onitu (devil), Beka (cat), Jahannamu (damned), setani (devil), pogko (skink), Te saa (snake), and Te ibilisi (demon). Second, curses in the form of phrases, with 10 instances such as Mata kajilou (Your eyes are cross-eyed), Kapatuli pei (naughty fool), Usauri Kabeo-beo (extremely foolish), Kaleau (your genitals), Te ngarou (your mouth), Lengka nuyi ina (your mother's genitals), Teyi ama (your father), Botau (your bald head), Morusu koppe (skinny and bony), Morusu dao (ugly and skinny), Unimmiu (your vagina), sauri konduo (too crazy), teana harramu (illegitimate child), Lombu nu ngaro (mouth hole). It is important to note that some words and phrases might have specific cultural or regional meanings that are crucial to understanding the context of this research.

Outsourcing teenage language: a participatory approach for exploring speech and text messaging

Abstract This paper presents a remote method used for engaging teenagers as citizen sociolinguists within the research project Teen Speak in Estonia. The project, launched in January 2020, aims to investigate young people’s language by creating the first systematic dual corpus of Estonian teenagers’ spoken language and text messaging. Previously, youth language in Estonia has not been the subject of much research. Yet scholarly attention to teenage language usage has been on the rise internationally, with corpora compiled in English and several other languages. The article describes the process of recruiting and training participants, as well as adjustments made to data collection in connection with the outbreak of COVID-19 and the restrictions which followed. While the pandemic did modestly interfere with the participatory approach, the data collection was successfully carried out, thanks primarily to well-networked and dedicated 9- to 18-year-old participants. Notwithstanding a gender imbalance, the corpus of 97 h of speech and nearly 60,000 words of text messages will facilitate research into Estonian teenagers’ Estonian–English codeswitching and other linguistic features, across two registers. The remote method is recommended for use elsewhere, especially in places where mutual trust prevails, and teenagers claim a fair amount of independence, responsibility and facility with online applications.

Fenomena Bahasa Gaul “Bestie” dan Eksistensi Bahasa Indonesia di Kalangan Remaja

Language is the identity of a country or region that is used as the main communication tool. Everyone needs language when interacting, expressing ideas and opinions and other social relationships. In its development, the use of Indonesian began to shift to be replaced by the use of the language of teenagers, one of which was the use of the word bestie. The use of the word bestie is not only used by teenagers, not infrequently educated people also use this bestie language, both in oral and written form, both in formal and non-formal times, resulting in the use of language being bad and incorrect so that it will have an impact on the existence of the Indonesian language. It would be nice if we can use good and correct Indonesian, so that the existence of Indonesian as the national language is maintained. Indonesian is the language of unity, so as Indonesian people who care and respect their national language, we must maintain and help preserve our language, namely Indonesian. If we have used good and correct Indonesian, people around us will be infected directly.

“Curhat Yuk! Jangan Pendam Masalahmu”: Layanan Konsultasi Online untuk Membantu Problematika Seputar Masalah Remaja

The very rapid physical, cognitive and social changes in adolescents cause a growth and development crisis that should not be ignored. Adolescence is a time of upheaval and stress. Therefore, adolescents must be accompanied to be able to undergo the process of growth and development. The purpose of this community service is to assist teenagers by providing online vent services, providing solutions to the problems they share, and publishing articles that discuss adolescent problems. The vent service is carried out through the Google Form which is linked on the website www.curhatyuk.net. The target of this activity is youth aged 13-18 years. The answer to the vent was given via email. In a span of 2.5 months, there were 46 teenagers who used online consultations. During this period, 12 articles on popular psychology have been published, written in the language of teenagers. Some of the articles are written based on the problems that users share. In general, this website has a pretty good performance.

This research was developed based on the problems that exist in adolescents. This study aims to develop and find out the language used by today's youth. Language is the hallmark of a country as a means of communication. Everyone must need language in interacting with fellow human beings, expressing ideas and even opinions and other social discussion relationships. With the development of the era, the language spoken by teenagers today is slang. Slang is not only used by teenagers, even parents also use it both in writing and verbally, formally and informally. This results in the use of language being not good and correct. We should be able to use Indonesian properly and correctly, therefore Indonesian remains the national language and is maintained. Slang is the typical language of teenagers "the words are changed in such a way, so that it can be understood among them only". This can be understood by all Indonesian teenagers who are reached by the mass media, even though these terms are developing, changing and increasing almost every day. Slang will continue to evolve. Recent changes in London English. An overview of the main lexical, grammar and discourse features of Multicultural London English (MLE)

This paper is intended to provide an overview of the main lexical, grammar and discourse features of the so-called Multicultural London English (MLE), a recent multiethnolect that can be regarded as a new development of London popular speech with the addition of traits from a pool of other sociolects and varieties of English, namely Caribbean and Jamaican English, and with a high proportion of young speakers. The data here analysed have been extracted from multiple sources, such as the London English Corpus (LOE), the Bergen Corpus of London Teenage Language (COLT), dictionaries, magazines, films, TV series, song lyrics and social media, mainly Twitter.
 Particular attention is paid to those grammar and discourse features which can be considered as the most innovative, such as the quotative this is + pronoun, man used as a personal pronoun, the overuse of a set of vocatives (brother, mate, boy, guy(s), bastard, dickhead), the invariant tags innit and you get me, the adjectives proper and bare used as intensifiers, a high presence of negative vernacular forms (ain’t, third person singular don’t), never as negative preterite and a high proportion of negative concord structures. As regards lexis, a wide range of borrowings and loan words from other varieties and languages are recorded together with an excessive amount of general vague nouns and general extenders.

In sociolinguistic studies, language is defined as a symbol system, in the form of sound, arbitrary, productive, dynamic, diverse and human. Understanding of language in the big Indonesian dictionary, understanding language in general can be defined as a symbol, and understanding language according to the term is a communication tool in the form of a system of symbols produced by speech organs in humans. Language is also part of culture and it is language that develops culture as we know it today. Language can also act as a tool for social integration as well as a tool for social adaptation, considering that Indonesian has a pluralistic language. Slang is the typical language of teenagers (words that are changed in such a way that it can only be understood between them) can be understood by almost all teenagers in the country who are reached by the mass media. Yet the terms are evolving, changing and increasing almost every day. Slang is a language that has unique terms, while the second definition is made clear again that it is teenagers who use the language and the language will continue to develop. As for the characteristics of slang, the factors that support the prevalence of slang among teenagers, the influence of slang on Indonesian and the impact of the use of slang.

Fostering function of speaking talk as performance

The paper deals with the function of speaking Talk as Performance, which requires special teaching approaches. The theoretical part provides information about adolescent language learners and guidelines for teaching them. The age of the learners at this level, the basic characteristics, the proficiency level based on Common European Framework of References for Languages (CEFR) and International Standard of Classification (ISCED) are discussed as well. Further on, attention is paid to the language skill speaking and basic methodological approaches to speaking are tackled. Finally, the function of speaking Talk as Performance and its implementation to in-class teaching is discussed. The research focuses on the application of three research methods content analysis, observation and interview, the purpose of which is to find which activities promote the function Talk as Performance in two different textbooks used by teenage language learners and to investigate how the function is taught in two different English classes by two different teachers. Taboo vocatives in the language of London teenagers

Abstract This study focusses on the use and functions of so-called taboo vocatives (e.g. dickhead, you bastard, bitch) in the language of London teenagers, based on the analysis of over 500 examples extracted from COLT (The Bergen Corpus of London Teenage Language) and LEC (London English Corpus). Findings illustrate a wide variety of items in this category, and show that these cannot be regarded as mere insults, since they often serve to reinforce the bonds between young speakers as well, and indeed can even carry affectionate connotations. The majority of these items are nouns and denote some kind of sexual reference, an abnormal or strange human condition, or a pejorative, animal-related allusion. There does not seem to have been any major changes in the use of these forms from the 1990s to the first decades of the current century, although many of them have broadened their meaning and can now be used with either male or female speakers.

‘Please’ as an impoliteness marker in English discourse

This study explored how Iranian EFL learners and native English speakers conceptualized the impolite use of please in interaction. Moreover, attempts were made to examine whether Iranian EFL learners and native English speakers differ in using the impolite version of please in their communications. To this end, informal conversations of 20 Iranian EFL learners in pairs and small groups were recorded and transcribed. The impolite version of please in these conversations was compared with similar data from the Bergen Corpus of London Teenage Language (COLT). According to results, several functions of the ‘impolite’ please were found among Iranian EFL learners and native English speakers. Firstly, please was used to establish or confirm harmonious relationships between the speakers; it was used as rapport-strengthening impoliteness marker. Secondly, ‘mock impoliteness’ was conceptualized to bear positive meaning since it was interpreted as an amusing or entertaining remark. In teenagers’ circles, entertainment skills whereby impolite please was employed were highly valued. Thirdly, participants adhered to ‘repetition’, ‘reformulation’, and ‘escalation’ in their interactions to show their creative impoliteness. Finally, it was concluded that certain functions of the impolite please were shared between the Iranian EFL learners and native English speakers, while some functions were not shared between these two groups.

No me banco la gente así. Un estudio comparativo del uso de palabras coloquiales y malsonantes en conversaciones informales en tres comunidades de habla hispanohablantes

The present article aims at describing and comparing the use of slang words and swearwords in teenage talk from three different Spanish speaking communities. The analysis builds on spontaneous teenage conversations from the corpus of teenage language Corpus Oral de Lenguaje Adolescente (COLA). This corpus contains informal conversations from Madrid, Buenos Aires and Santiago de Chile; and for this study one conversation from each city has been selected. The aim of the analysis is twofold, in the first place to describe and compare the slang words and swearwords registered in the three conversations, and secondly to study the pragmatic functions of these words. The analysis of the slang words shows that there is variation in the informal words and expressions used in the three communities, and that these expressions seem to be mostly regional. Regarding the swearwords used, there are similarities in the three communities. There are also similarities in the pragmatic functions of the slang words and swearwords in context. The conclusions that can be drawn from the analysis, is that the Spanish speaking communities have a common system regarding how the slang words are used, but each community uses their creativity in developing words and expressions. For swearwords, the system and the words used are more similar, which might indicate that the communities share the cultural aspects that are reflected in the swearwords.

Phraseology in teenage language in Spanish, English and Norwegian

Abstract A set of phraseological units that convey disagreement in Spanish, English and Norwegian teenage language are observed from three perspectives in this paper: the phraseological, the pragmatic-discursive and the contrastive perspective. The underlying assumption of the analysis is that the expression of disagreement in these terms among young people takes on certain pragmatic nuances. The Madrid Oral Corpus of Teenage Talk (COLAm), the COLT-corpus (Corpus of London Teenage Talk) and the UNO-corpus of Young Norwegian speakers (Ungdomsspråk i Norden, Oslo) enable a comparison of the use of these phraseological units expressing disagreement among teenagers across these three languages.

‘Ooh whoops I'm sorry! Teenagers' use of English apology expressions

The aim of this paper is to contribute to the on-going debate in the literature on mock im/politeness by exploring the ways in which teenagers use apologies. The data have been taken from the Bergen Corpus of London Teenage Language (COLT). The starting-point for the corpus analysis was to search for ‘apology expressions’ operationalised as one of the forms sorry, pardon, excuse me, forgive me, (I) apologize (and variations of these) in order to describe their frequencies and functions. In the next step, I investigated how the expressions were used in ‘insincere’ ways (for example sarcastically or for banter). Apologies used for banter were typically followed by a response in the next turn denying or rejecting the apology. They functioned as a solidarity strategy establishing a relationship of rapport between the teenagers. Ironic apologies were identified by a special ironic or sarcastic tone. In addition, it was possible to find some correlation between certain forms (in particular oh sorry) and the ironic interpretation of the apology. Ironic apologies could also be signalled by the use of expanded forms of apologies, intensification and more formal expressions associated with overpoliteness. Teenagers' conversational style was also characterized by the use of apologies for mimicry to perform stories or for comic parody.

“Help me move to that, blood”. A corpus-based study of the syntax and pragmatics of vocatives in the language of British teenagers

This study focusses on the use of the most common vocatives in the language of British teenagers and adults. Taking a corpus-based approach, it seeks to establish whether these vocatives are more frequent in the language of one group of speakers than in the other, and if so, what reasons might account for this. Also addressed is the position of vocatives in the utterance and the relation between position and pragmatic meaning. The final section looks in more detail at man and bruv/blood since these are among the most widespread and remarkable recent forms to emerge.Findings indicate that vocatives are clearly more frequent in the speech of British teenagers than in that of adult speakers. As expected, the majority of these items occur in final position. Regarding pragmatics, they serve a wide variety of functions, both interpersonal (summoning attention, creating solidarity among the speakers) and/or discourse-related (topic and turn management). We even find cases of more than one used in the same turn, and also examples of their metalinguistic use in reported speech. Finally, some of these vocatives have generally lost their deictic reference to the addressee, or may even adopt features of another category, such as pronouns, as in the case of man.

Negative concord in the language of British adults and teenagers

AbstractNegative concord (NC) (e.g.I don’t know nobody in Havering) has been the focus of a considerable number of diachronic as well as sociolinguistic studies, mainly in terms of its pervasiveness in the most common varieties of English. This paper contributes to the existing literature on the topic by examining NC in the language of British adults and teenagers. The findings, based on the analysis of data from three comparable adult and teenager corpora, indicate that: (i) NC is much more frequent in teenagers than in adults; (ii) the language of teenagers shows a wider variety of NC patterns than that of adults; (iii) the number of multiple negatives (e.g.I don’t want nothing to do with you no more) is not as common as expected, and they are found mainly in the expression of teenagers; (iv) pragmatically speaking, NC structures may be used to accentuate a negative meaning, although they are often equivalent to single negatives.

Kulturowe uwarunkowania piśmienności młodzieży

The age of secondary orality, in which the oral and literate ways of thinking collide with each other, influences the communicative styles of today’s youth. One of the visible phenomena related to the language of teenagers is their progressing inability to acquire skills required to use written texts, together with the resulting cognitive and social consequences. In this article, the author discusses the impact of cultural factors on the development of youth literacy. The analyses, based on observations of the linguistic behaviour of lower secondary school students, show that young people are firmly anchored in the current communicative communities immersed in the digital world.

Slang jest spoko? Pedagogiczne aspekty obecności socjolektu uczniowskiego w dyskursie publicznym

Students slang as a socially conditioned variety of language was initially intended and used by teenagers exclusively for informal contacts between peers. Today, it is also used for communication between children, young people and adults, including in official situations; it is even present in public discourse. In this article I discuss the expansion of teenage slang and its consequences. I have tried to identify shifting cultural contexts as one of the contributing factors, providing examples of lexical slang elements used in media communication, and reflecting on the educational significance of the introduction of teenage language into public discourse.
