Technical influence on knowledge grid model to promote knowledge sharing in big data community

The significant role of big data in improving decision making, services and, productivity in organisations is not doubtable, therefore knowledge sharing is necessary to avoid redundancy and reduce time and cost. So a suitable infrastructure such as knowledge grid that can effectively capture, share, publish and manage knowledge resources to answer the questions from masses of data will be essential. This qualitative research aimed to analyse a knowledge grid model, from a technological view, in facilitating knowledge sharing among big data community. In this way, the study reviews the technology effects in the current knowledge sharing model and it also highlights the connection of knowledge grid, technology, and big data. It narrows the findings of knowledge grid components as node and link, the different layers in a knowledge grid's architecture and their condition from a technical view by analysing current knowledge grid models and their represented data. As a result, the paper clears the technological factors, their relationship, and effect in designing a knowledge grid model to promote knowledge sharing in the big data community.

Sosialisasi Peraturan Cabang Olahraga Voli Pada Guru Penjas Se-Kecamatan Cimanggu Kabupaten Cilacap

Community service is non-formal education for physical education teachers in schools, through educational activities, and educational outreach that can support community development. Education for the community is one of the implementations of the tri-dharma of higher education. Community service through the socialization of volleyball sport rules to physical education teachers throughout Cimanggu District, Regency. Cilacap. is an effort to: (1) find out and provide an understanding of the level of sports human resource management knowledge of physical education teachers in schools throughout Cimanggu District; (2) know and describe the potential of sports human resources in schools throughout Cimanggu District. This Community Service is carried out to provide education to Physical Education teachers in each school about the Volleyball Sports Rules for Physical Education Teachers and identify talents in schools from an early age to create a generation of outstanding people. As a result of this community service, there has been an increase in knowledge about skills in preparing training programs and understanding in identifying children's talents in looking for athletes in schools, especially in the field of Volleyball.

Evaluating the efficacy of GIS maps as boundary objects: unpacking the limits and opportunities of Indigenous knowledge in forest and natural resource management

ABSTRACT The meaningful inclusion of diverse forms of knowledge, such as Indigenous knowledge (IK), remain unrealized in many natural resource management decision-making processes. Innovative boundary objects could be used to facilitate the effective inclusion of IK in natural resource management decision-making processes. In this study, Geographic Information Systems (GIS) maps were used as boundary objects due to their ability to visually display IK across knowledge boundaries. Using a conceptual framework that combines the Six Faces of Traditional Ecological Knowledge (TEK) outlined by Houde (2007). “The Six Faces of Traditional Ecological Knowledge: Challenges and Opportunities for Canadian Co-Management Arrangements.” Ecology and Society 12 (2): 34–50. http://www.ecologyandsociety.org/vol12/iss2/art34/) and boundary object criteria derived from the boundary science literature, our study investigated whether and how GIS maps could be used to increase the influence of IK on forest management. The four boundary object criteria (interpretive flexibility, accommodating concreteness, facilitating joint process, and satisfying information need) generated insight into specific ways to reduce the current barriers that may restrict greater use of IK within GIS and allow them to function more effectively as boundary objects.

Influences of high-performance work practices on trust in organisation in Jordanian construction firms

It has been shown in the literature on human resources that unsatisfactory levels of trust can lead to deteriorating levels of work performance while increasing transaction costs. The lack of trust between employees and their supervisors reduces productivity, which negatively influences work performance. In an organisation that implements high-performance work practices (HPWPs), employees may presume that employers are highly proficient, dependable, and unbiased. This study aims to assess the effects of HPWPs on trust in organisation (TIO), which is measured by trust in management (TIM) and trust in supervision (TIS) in Jordanian construction firms. To this end, a quantitative methodology has been applied, and PLS-SEM analysis has been employed to analyse data from 274 respondents, including administrative and managerial employees of the grade-one construction firms in Aqaba, Jordan. The results showed that two variables, involving extensive training and reward based on performance have positively influenced TIM and TIS, whereas job security was found to establish a direct relationship with TIM. The results showed that employee involvement in decision-making has an insignificant relationship with TIM and TIS. This paper has forwarded useful theoretical and practical implications regarding human resource management knowledge in the construction industry context in Jordan.

Employee Mapping Process as a Solution for Empowering Human Resources in Companies

Objective - The development of the Indonesian residential business sector in recent years has experienced rapid changes and developments. For example, landed-house housing has now decreased in favour of high-rise developments. This has had an impact on the needs for various competencies of employees of construction company X, therefore, the company needs to empower employees, beginning with mapping employees of construction X. Mapping of employees has not been widely carried out by the company. Various elements are needed to describe employee strengths and the results can be used to develop a competency development program to achieve long-term targets. The purpose of this research is to describe an employee mapping process that has been carried out by the consultant group. Methodology/Technique - The research method used is qualitative narrative research. Consultants who directly handle and provide assistance to employee mapping are the participants in this study. Researchers collaborate with participants and involve them actively in the data collection. Finding - The results of this study illustrate that the number of employees who are ready to serve as project managers is still limited. Human resource managers need to implement efficient strategies to recruit and hire candidates and carry out a number of development programs to accelerate competency improvement and develop a talented management system. Novelty - This research contributes to the knowledge of empowerment strategies for the company and to human resource management knowledge for construction company X and other similar companies. Sharing is caring: Knowledge sharing at the city of Johannesburg Library and Information Services

Background: The strength of an organisation lies in its ability to manage its human capital. Ideally, organisations that wish to remain service-oriented in this Fourth Industrial Revolution need to comprehend the importance of tacit knowledge and ensure its retention and sharing at all levels. Many organisations fail to capitalise on the value within their tacit knowledge reserves until when employees leave their jobs. Quite often, the importance of the lost knowledge will be felt when a new employee takes over.Objectives: The aim of this study was to examine how tacit knowledge is shared at the city of Johannesburg Library and Information Services.Method: This qualitative study employed the knowledge conversion theory to examine the management of tacit knowledge at the City of Johannesburg Library and Information Services. A case study design was used, and data were collected through semi-structured interviews and document analysis.Results: The key findings revealed that the City of Johannesburg Library and Information Services does not have an effective strategy to manage tacit knowledge and does not utilise available knowledge management resources. Furthermore, knowledge sharing is very minimal.Conclusion: The study concludes that the City of Johannesburg Library and Information Services does not manage the tacit knowledge that is at their disposal, and knowledge sharing is also not encouraged. The study recommends that an effective community of practice for knowledge sharing and a policy for knowledge sharing should be established at the City of Johannesburg Library and Information Services.

Use of food web knowledge in environmental conservation and management of living resources in the Baltic Sea

AbstractFood webs are central entities mediating processes and external pressures in marine ecosystems. They are essential to understand and predict ecosystem dynamics and provision of ecosystem services. Paradoxically, utilization of food web knowledge in marine environmental conservation and resource management is limited. To better understand the use of knowledge and barriers to incorporation in management, we assess its application related to the management of eutrophication, chemical contamination, fish stocks, and non-indigenous species. We focus on the Baltic, a severely impacted, but also intensely studied and actively managed semi-enclosed sea. Our assessment shows food web processes playing a central role in all four areas, but application varies strongly, from formalized integration in management decisions, to support in selecting indicators and setting threshold values, to informal knowledge explaining ecosystem dynamics and management performance. Barriers for integration are complexity of involved ecological processes and that management frameworks are not designed to handle such information. We provide a categorization of the multi-faceted uses of food web knowledge and benefits of future incorporation in management, especially moving towards ecosystem-based approaches as guiding principle in present marine policies and directives. We close with perspectives on research needs to support this move considering global and regional change.

Systematic Literature Review: Faktor Keunggulan Kompetitif Hotel di Indonesia

The aim of this research is to identify and evaluate the factors that give hotels in Indonesia a competitive advantage. This research approach is based on a three-stage protocol, which includes an initial stage, implementation, and writing. The initial search string yielded 1,250 journal articles, of which 12 were chosen for further investigation. This study employs qualitative methods, after which the data is extracted and research questions are generated. Differentiation, environmentally friendly technology, service quality, marketing efficiency, market focus, creativity or image, leadership style, information systems, knowledge management, customer intimacy, hotel budgets, and human resources are among the factors that affect hotels' competitive advantage, according to the findings of this report. Both of these factors have a favorable or important impact on hotels' competitive advantage. The Effect of Strategic Human Resource and Knowledge Management on Sustainable Competitive Advantages at Jordanian Universities: The Mediating Role of Organizational Innovation

The higher education sector faces considerable competition around the world. Accordingly, universities need to make more efforts to increase their competitive advantages. This study aimed to empirically investigate the effect of organizational innovation (OI), knowledge management (KM), and strategic human resource management (SHRM), with a dependent variable of sustainable competitive advantages (SCAs), at Jordanian Universities. For this aim, a specially designed questionnaire has been distributed to study a convenience sample of 400 academic and administrative staff at Jordanian private and public universities, to obtain the required quantitative data. The study’s hypotheses were verified by Baron and Kenny’s mediation regression approach using the software Statistical Package for the Social Sciences (SPSS). The results of the study demonstrate that there is a significant positive relationship between the following pairs of variables: KM and SCA; SHRM and SCA; SHRM and OI; KM and OI; and OI and SCA, whereas OI was found to have a partial and indirect significant mediation impact on the direct relationship between KM and SHRM and universities (organizations) gaining SCAs. Finally, it was concluded that more attention needs to be paid to the OI aspect in organizations and to integrate it with KM and SHRM in a way that promotes SCAs. In addition, we propose that similar studies should be conducted in industries other than education or the education sector in different countries in a way that obtains generalized and representative results.

Cross-cultural training: a study of European expatriates in New Zealand

PurposeThe purpose of this study is to investigate the cross-cultural training (CCT) provided to European expatriate executives in New Zealand, and consequently add to the knowledge for human resource management in the Australasian region.Design/methodology/approachThe present qualitative research study is based on open-ended and in-depth interviews with 30 European expatriate executives who had been residing in New Zealand for the past year or more.FindingsThe results indicate that at least some CCT was provided to all interviewees; however, the training content seemed to be strongly centered around professional work, with little focus on the culture of the host country. Moreover, there was no follow-up to the pre-departure CCT and very few expatriates in the sample received any training in New Zealand. Similarly, the family is considered a fundamental factor for the success of expatriates; however, in the sample, neither spouses nor children received any training before or after their arrival in New Zealand.Research limitations/implicationsThe research is limited by the sample small size. The study’s inconclusive highlights the need for further research to explore the influences of local residents, colleagues and neighbors on expatriates’ adjustment. Similarly, further studies are also required to ascertain the effectiveness of CCT in helping support expatriates’ performance and adjustment in New Zealand.Practical implicationsThe present study suggests that opportunities do exist for multinational companies (MNCs) to better prepare their expatriates for assignments by integrating more effectively issues related to cultural awareness into their CCT. Specifically, experimental CCT methods that emphasize the host country’s culture are most valuable. The CCT technique should be tailored to the cultural distance between the host nation and expatriates’ country of origin and to the nature of their assignment.Originality/valueGiven the existence of many MNCs in New Zealand, it is surprising that the issue of CCT in this context has received little research attention. The current study endeavors to address this gap. This paper hopes that the findings may also be useful for consultants and human resource managers in MNCs who are involved in preparing expatriates for foreign assignments in Australasia, especially New Zealand.

The Contribution of Knowledge Management to Human Resource Development: a Systematic and Integrative Literature Review

Knowledge management (KM) and human resource management (HRM) are closely related, since they both manage knowledge-based intangible assets that create and maintain a competitive advantage. In this research, we aim to show how KM contributes to human resource development (HRD) by systematically reviewing the empirical literature of the last 20 years (2000 to 2019). The results show that six KM processes contribute to seven dimensions of HRD to different degrees. KM contributes mostly to individual and professional HRD. The two most relevant KM processes in this relation are the creation and sharing of knowledge. The findings indicate an underuse of KM in technological, organizational, and social HRDs that should alert managers. The contribution of this study regards the identification of these seven dimensions of HRD and the effects that KM processes have on them. This contribution provides theoretical guidance on the relation between KM processes and HRD dimensions that leads to managerial implications for organizations.

An indigenous knowledge-based sustainable landscape for mountain villages: The Jiabang rice terraces of Guizhou, China

A robust understanding of the effect of indigenous knowledge systems (IKSs) on spatial patterns of natural resource management (NRM) in mountain landscapes could contribute to fostering ecological sustainability and cultural diversity. This study addresses the mechanisms by which IKSs influence landscape through the management of various natural resources. Data was collected through multiple methods: in-depth interviews, a questionnaire survey, and spatial participatory mapping, in Jiabang region, Guizhou China. The results show that 1) local rice farming methods and livelihoods have influenced and been influenced by the creation and application of IKSs including resource management knowledge of the mountains, forests, water and agricultural resources; 2) the systems have shaped the communities’ landscape and the resulting spatial diversity through the interlocking mediation of NRM with IKSs. This study also shows that IKSs continue to be transmitted well to the following generation. Based on these findings, the mechanism of the influence of IKSs on landscapes through NRM was discussed, and an ideal diagram of the sustainable landscape of the rice terraces was proposed. This research can provide reference to the sustainable resource use, mountain protection, and tourism for mountainous agricultural community.

Development of Emergent Knowledge Strategies and New Dynamic Capabilities for Business Education in a Time of Crisis

The current pandemic is, above all, a crisis of knowledge—Humanity had to find a vaccine, and now we are not sure how to behave socially to minimize the pandemic bad effects. For organizations, this situation requires an update in the reflection regarding both the strategy and the actions that should be performed. Therefore, the current crisis requires new ways of applying knowledge strategies and dealing with dynamic capabilities. We first analyze the two questions (knowledge strategies and dynamic capabilities) in abstract and general terms, and then we specifically focus on business education during the COVID-19 crisis. We conclude that COVID-19 creates a need for all knowledge strategies in terms of business education. Data, information, knowledge, and wisdom will be needed; above all, it requires the Unknown-Knowns, which is the basis for Knowledge Sharing, and the Unknown-Unknowns that base Knowledge Exploration because both Knowledge Exploitation and Knowledge Acquisition are strategies business schools use to perform in times of crisis. They are more difficult to implement because both the Known-Knowns and the Known-Unknowns are less valuable to solve a crisis like this one: all this will result in “agile universities”, which will be (and already are) those that will use the right strategies and the right dynamic capabilities and will have better results. The paper is original because we link Knowledge Management and Human Resources Development Concepts to generate a broader and more comprehensive understanding of the organizational behavior about a very specific problem—business education—in a very specific time of the COVID-19 crisis. The limits of the paper relate to the evolution of society itself; we do not know when the crisis will end, and we are not sure how much of the “new normal” will remain in the “post-COVID-19” situation. The topic and analysis are of interest for practitioners because daily, they experience how their reality changed and their need to adapt, yet they do not know how. This topic and analysis are also of interest to scholars because science is based on questions, explaining and providing ways to improve one’s reality. COVID-19 has shown us, dramatically and uniquely, the need for new solutions in times of peace.

Diversity and abundance of soil microbial communities decline, and community compositions change with severity of post-logging fire.

Understanding the effects of logging and fire on forest soil communities is integral to our knowledge of forest ecology and effective resource management. The resulting changes in soil biota have substantial impacts on forest succession and associated ecosystem processes. We quantified bacterial and fungal abundance, diversity and community composition across a logging and burn severity gradient, approximately one month after fire, in temperate wet eucalypt forests in Tasmania, Australia. Using amplicon sequencing and real-time quantitative PCR of the bacterial 16S rRNA gene and fungal ITS1 region, we demonstrate that (i) burn severity is a strong driver of soil microbial community composition, (ii) logging and high severity burning substantially reduce the biomass and diversity of soil bacteria and fungi, and (iii) the impacts of logging and burning on soil microbial communities are largely restricted to the top 10cm of soil, with weak impacts on the subsoil. The impacts of disturbance on microbial community composition are greater than the effects of site-to-site edaphic differences. Fire also drives more divergence in community composition than logging alone. Key microbial taxa driving differences in severely burnt soils include bacterial genera implicated in plant-growth promotion and producing antifungal compounds as well as saprotrophic fungi that are also capable of forming ectomycorrhizal associations. Our research suggests that low-moderate severity burns are important for maintaining diversity and biomass in soil microbial communities but having a range of burn severities across a site contributes to the overall diversity of habitat conditions providing for both microbial and plant diversity.

Self-directed learning with knowledge management model on academic achievement and digital literacy abilities for employees of a Thai energy organization

Previously, we described a self-directed learning with knowledge management (SDL-KM) model (Silamut and Petsangsri 2020), to motivate learners in an organization to learn from internal-and-external knowledge management resources to enhance their Academic Achievement and Digital Literacy Abilities. In this paper, we aimed to demonstrate the value of this model by comparing these abilities in a controlled experiment with employees of an energy regulatory organization in Bangkok, Thailand. 40 employees were randomly selected, using stratified sampling, and divided into an experimental group (20) and control group (20), who participated in learning activities on two energy topics. The research instruments were data collection at the end of the lessons, which included information on Academic Achievement and Digital Literacy Ability assessment. Means, standard deviations and one-way MANOVA statistics were computed. As the results, the experimental group had higher Digital Literacy Abilities than the control group (p < 0.05), but there was no significant difference between the groups for Academic Achievement. SDL-KM model encourages learners to learn by themselves, knowing how to use Digital Literacy Abilities to support KM. This will lead to success in their work.

Examining the core competencies for success in the hotel industry: The case of Cyprus

This paper investigates the necessary core competencies for a successful career in the hotel industry. For this purpose, two survey questionnaire instruments were administered to collect data based on the views of both educators and hospitality professionals in Cyprus. Utilizing the exploratory factor analysis technique six-core competency factors were identified: Leadership and Critical Thinking, Information Technology and Financial Analysis, Human Relations -Communication, Interpersonal Communication-Cultural Diversity, Human Resource Management and Professional Image-Operational Knowledge. Consequently, a model emerged for identifying and developing core competencies required by the hotel industry that is useful for educators, as well as hotel industry professionals.

Promoting green behavior through ethical leadership: a model of green human resource management and environmental knowledge

PurposeThis paper aims to investigate the influence of supervisor's ethical leadership style on subordinates' green or pro-environmental work behavior in the presence of green human resource management (GHRM) as a mediator and environmental knowledge as a moderator.Design/methodology/approachA questionnaire-based was distributed to 427 supervisor–subordinate dyads working in various Pakistani organizations. Structural equation modeling was used to determine the mechanisms and boundary conditions in the relationship between supervisor's ethical leadership style and subordinates' green behavior.FindingsStructural equation modeling supported a partial mediating role of GHRM in the influence of ethical leadership on green work behavior. Further, the findings revealed that employee's environmental knowledge can magnify the indirect impact of ethical leadership, via GHRM, on green behavior.Research limitations/implicationsCross-sectional survey data are typically associated with common method bias. To counter this bias, we collected data from dual sources, namely, supervisors and their subordinates. The research findings have implications in deepening the understanding of the impact of ethical leadership in improving environmental performance of the organization.Originality/valueThis is the first study that utilizes multi-sourced data to examine the mediating role of GHRM and the moderating role of environmental knowledge in the relationship between ethical leadership and green behavior at work.

Farmers’ Forest Values and Preferences for Strategies for Managing Smallholder Forest Plantations Established on State Reserve Lands, Ghana

Forest fringe communities have considerable knowledge of the value of forests. Quantitative forms of such knowledge can provide useful insights to complement scientific knowledge in forest resource management. Nonetheless, little attention has been given to the relevance of quantitative forms of such knowledge. A questionnaire survey of a sample of 92 farmers from six communities in Ghana engaged in smallholder forest plantation establishment was used to gather data on forest values and management strategies. Principal component analysis was employed in the data analysis. The results showed that ‘recreation’ (component 1) is dominated by direct use values and ‘habitat for wildlife’ (component 2), is dominated by indirect use values. In addition to filling the gap created by declining timber resources from natural forests, this study provides useful information on how smallholder plantations can be profitably managed for market and non-market values.

Knowledge management and human resources performance: evidence from Turkish family businesses

PurposeThe purpose of this study is to evaluate the effects of knowledge management (KM) processes on human resource management’s (HRM’s) performance in family-owned organizations. Therefore, a model is proposed to explain the core processes of KM and their effects on HRM's performance.Design/methodology/approachA field study is conducted based on data collected from family-owned companies in Turkey. The survey instrument is a self-administered questionnaire composed of 36 questions in total. There are three demographic questions, 18 questions aim to investigate KM processes and 15 questions aim to investigate HRM practices.FindingsThe results show that KM processes have significant positive relationships with HRM performance. Among the processes of KM, knowledge generation (KG) is found to have the most significant effect. This study shows that KM processes are enhancing HRM performance in family-owned organizations.Research limitations/implicationsFirst of all, it is conducted on family-owned companies. Hence, the results may change based on types of organizations. Second, convenience sampling was used in data collection. The majority of data were collected through HRM departments who were available, reliable and easy to access. Despite many advantages of this sampling technique on major disadvantage is lacking clear generalizability. For this reason, it is presumed that HRM awareness is high in the selected participants. Different sampling methods may lead to different results. Thus, for future research, it would be useful to make cross-cultural and cross-sectorial studies to compare the business cultures and to find more accurate outcomes related to KM and HRM implementations.Originality/valueNowadays, most of the family-owned companies are well aware of the statement that both KM and HRM have significant positive impacts on organizational outcomes. This research's findings indicate that KM processes enhance HRM performance in family-owned organizations. Therefore, family-owned organizations should pay more attention on KM processes and the linkage between KM and HRM in order to obtain better HRM results.

The impact of knowledge management and human resources strategies on the Nepalese banks’ efficiency

The application of strategic relationship between Knowledge Management and Human Resource Strategy in Banking Industry is a key to achieve organizational competence. The main purpose of this study is to find out relationship between KM and HR Strategy for performance implication in Nepalese commercial banks. Therefore, Strategic relationship between KM and HR strategy for banking performance is found to be poor in practice. So, weak implementation hinders in achieving the desired results. Result of this study clearly exposed that Nepalese Commercial Banks need to determine different profiles of their organizational strategy based on the human resource that has the material impact on an organization. Meanwhile, it need to direct the knowledge management strategy resource which may enable Nepalese banks to achieve competitive advantage. Therefore, future efforts by both policy makers and academicians are still unknown to sharpen the theoretical framework and practical validation.
