Library Services and Information Management: The Role of Academic Librarians in the 21st Century Nigeria

This column describes the nature of library services and information management’s role in this 21st century and examines the role of academic librarians in Nigeria. The development brought about by technology has drastically improved and facilitated the dissemination of information to users and has mandated librarians to add new roles to their mode of service to move with the trend of time and be relevant to society. The role of academic librarians in this 21st century now involves advocates, pace-setters/image makers, knowledge resources management, information technology development, user services, human resource management, resource sharing, and networking. The column concludes that academic librarians in Nigeria are now compelled to create innovative library services that will make them relevant and fit into the information management roles. Hence the column recommends that librarians need to keep abreast with the trend of the digital era by always acquiring new skills that will enable them to function effectively and efficiently. Library management should make policies and provide opportunities that will enable academic librarians to always acquire new training that will enhance library services to meet with the trends of time. Librarians are to upgrade themselves with the managerial role.

BUSINESS COMMUNICATIONS IN PROJECT MANAGEMENT OF INTERNATIONAL COMPANIES

Purpose. The aim of this study is to investigate the impact of business communications on project management in international companies. The study aims to identify the main dependencies and provide recommendations for their effective application in company activities. Methodology of research. The study employed various scientific methods, including the analytical method for literature review, the classification method to differentiate the main components of business communication's impact on project management, the description method for detailed explanation, the monographic method to study literature on business communication elements in project management, and the systematic-analytical method for processing obtained information. Findings. This text discusses the theoretical, organizational, and practical foundations of business communications in project management. It argues that effective business communications in project management can aid in the management of knowledge and human resources, the rational use of virtual teams, and the development of digital skills. The text describes the process of project development and implementation, including the necessary business communication procedures, is substantiated. The author presents their vision of the project implementation process in international companies. Originality. The substantiation of the life cycle of business communications in the project management of an international company at different stages has been further developed. The key stages and algorithms for implementing effective business communications in a company are identified. Practical value. The authors' proposals regarding the development of business communication processes in project management of an international company can enhance the efficiency of their activities. Determinants of Radical and Incremental Innovation: The Roles of Human Resource Management Practices, Knowledge Sharing, and Market Turbulence

Aim/Purpose: Given the increasingly important role of knowledge and human resources for firms in developing and emerging countries to pursue innovation, this paper aims to study and explore the potential intermediating roles of knowledge donation and collection in linking high-involvement human resource management (HRM) practice and innovation capability. The paper also explores possible moderators of market turbulence in fostering the influences of knowledge-sharing (KS) behaviors on innovation competence in terms of incremental and radical innovation. Background: The fitness of HRM practice is critical for organizations to foster knowledge capital and internal resources for improving innovation and sustaining competitive advantage. Methodology: The study sample is 309 respondents and Structural Equation Model (SEM) was used for the analysis of the data obtained through a questionnaire survey with the aid of AMOS version 22. Contribution: This paper increases the understanding of the precursor role of high-involvement HRM practices, intermediating mechanism of KS activities, and the regulating influence of market turbulence in predicting and fostering innovation capability, thereby pushing forward the theory of HRM and innovation management. Findings: The empirical findings support the proposed hypotheses relating to the intermediating role of KS in the HRM practices-innovation relationship. It spotlights the crucial character of market turbulence in driving the domination of knowledge-sharing behaviors on incremental innovation. Recommendations for Practitioners: The proposed research model can be applied by leaders and directors to foster their organizational innovation competence. Recommendation for Researchers: Researchers are recommended to explore the influence of different models of HRM practices on innovation to identify the most effective pathway leading to innovation for firms in developing and emerging nations. Impact on Society: This paper provides valuable initiatives for firms in developing and emerging markets on how to leverage the strategic and internal resources of an organization for enhancing innovation. Future Research: Future studies should investigate the influence of HRM practices and knowledge resources to promote frugal innovation models for dealing with resource scarcity.

Knowledge management implications to the financial performance

Knowledge and effective knowledge management are critical sources of sustainable competitive advantage. Literature reveals that knowledge management positively impacts the overall company performance. For this reason, many companies strive to improve their knowledge management capabilities to enhance their organizational performance. Many studies have confirmed the direct positive influence that knowledge management resources and capabilities can have on corporate financial performance. This paper’s research focuses on evaluating the impact of knowledge management capability on the financial performance of a company sample from Bosnia and Herzegovina in sectors with high levels of knowledge. Research findings revealed a positive relationship between knowledge management capabilities and financial performance, specifically between knowledge creation and application and the financial performance of companies.

Statistical and isotopic analysis of sources and evolution of groundwater

Investigating sources and evolution of groundwater in the Black Volta River basin is vital for understanding aquifer chemical configuration. Though resettlement has made groundwater in the region an important water supply source, its hydrochemical origin is poorly understood. Therefore, hydrochemistry was coupled with stable isotope (δ2H and δ18O) techniques to improve knowledge for effective groundwater resource management. For this purpose, 23 boreholes were sampled in the Black Volta River basin of Ghana. Major ion dominance is in the order: Na+ > Ca2+ > Mg2+ >K+ and HCO3− > Cl− > SO42− > NO3− respectively. Hydrochemical facies indicates the presence of soluble silicate minerals within aquifer. Hierarchical cluster analysis showed higher ionic concentration within aquifers which decreases towards discharge areas. This is attributed to longer residence time at lower elevations leading to interaction of water with silicate and accessory minerals. Oxygen-18 spatial plot shows recharge occurs along subsurface fractured zones which is confirmed by the water table contour of the study area. Natural geochemical processes, anthropogenic influences and the dissolution of silicate/albite components were extracted using Principal component analysis/factor analysis. These two components which explains the hydrochemistry constituted 79.5% of the total variance in the hydrochemical data and have eigen values > 1. Isotopic composition of groundwater indicates is of meteoric origin and the aquifers were recharged by precipitation. The outcome of this study provides theoretical support for the monitoring and management of groundwater, and its implication on the migration of people in arid/semi-arid regions.

Ownership, Governance, Uses, and Ecosystem Services of Community Forests in the Eastern United States

Over time, community forests (CFs) have been established across the globe to meet various social, economic, and ecological needs. Benefits of CFs include conserving resilient forests and natural resources and ecosystem services, enhancing social and economic capital, and leveraging local and indigenous knowledge in forest and natural resource management and decision-making. Research on CFs in the U.S. is quite limited, and cases that have been assessed show a wide spectrum in terms of CF ownership, organizational structure, governance, property rights, and uses. Through an exploratory research approach, this study enhances the understanding of the characteristics of CFs in the U.S. and the ecosystem services and other benefits that they provide. Through online web searches, we compiled one of the first comprehensive lists of CFs in the Eastern U.S. Prior to this study, there was no publicly available comprehensive database or list of CFs in the country. Subsequently, we conducted comparative case study research, which included semi-structured in-person interviews with key stakeholders from four CFs in the Eastern U.S. to understand CF ownership, governance, uses, and benefits. CFs benefits frequently included cultural services, such as recreation and education, and regulating and supporting services, such as water quality and wildlife habitat. Much less common was a focus on provisioning services such as timber or non-timber forest products. Maintaining collaboration and funding for CF efforts in the long run without significant CF revenues remains a challenge for most forests. Overall, this research sheds lights on CF characteristics and capacities in the Eastern U.S. and identifies potential opportunities and needs for the U.S. in the future. NHS knowledge and library services in England in the digital age.

National Health Service (NHS) knowledge and library services in England are integrating digital advances into their systems and services. Health Education England (HEE) leads on the development of NHS library services. A key workstream focuses on (1) improving the infrastructure to enable discovery and management of digital knowledge resources; (2) collaborating with local teams to establish regional library management systems that are integrated with the new national discovery service for healthcare staff and learners. This article explores initiatives on resource discovery as well as the need for system-wide partnership working to ensure that biomedical knowledge in computable form is findable, accessible, interoperable and reusable. Low levels of health and digital literacy pose a significant barrier to using health information and accessing health services. A range of interventions are aimed at enhancing citizens' digital and health literacy skills. The education and life-long learning needs of the knowledge and library services workforce are considered. Working with CILIP and higher education institutions, HEE delivers a range of educational offers through its Learning Academy. As Artificial Intelligence and automation are implemented in health systems, knowledge and library staff form a crucial bridge between technology and those who use it.

Knowledge as a theoretical object: Implications for knowledge management

The thesis of this paper is that, despite its substantial accomplishments over the past 40 years as a professional practice, knowledge management (KM) has yet to mature as an intellectual discipline. The goal of this conceptual paper is to accelerate this maturation by generalizing KM. The paper does so by identifying KM’s generic social phenomena and how these phenomena can be better understood through the development of theory oriented around knowledge that defines, predicts, and explains them. KM theory is examined through an extensive review of the existing literature. Four levels of organizational KM are offered, including two that examine an organization’s basis (resources) and essence (ideas and actions), while the second two build upon these to examine resource management in general, and the management of knowledge resources specifically. Treating KM as a theoretical object will lead to greater understanding of KM. This enriched understanding will lead to a more effective performance of KM. The achievement of this paper’s goal (i.e., generalizing KM) will facilitate the maturation of KM into a discipline and practice that consistently contributes to organizational effectiveness. Little KM literature exists on the conceptualization of knowledge as a theoretical object, which offers the opportunity not only to develop theory that defines, predicts, and explains KM within organizations more systematically but also ultimately to understand better the ways in which KM contributes to individual happiness, community cohesion, and social prosperity.

Spatio-temporal analysis of trends and variability in precipitation across Morocco: Comparative analysis of recent and old non-parametric methods

In the essence of climate change, a better understanding of the variation in precipitation patterns provides in-depth knowledge of water resource management and mitigation of floods and droughts, particularly in Morocco where rainfed agriculture is predominant. This paper investigates the precipitation variability over the whole country of Morocco. To that end, a monthly precipitation dataset of 78 rain gauges with more than 40 years of observation was used to investigate the spatial-temporal variability of precipitation. Moreover, the spatio-temporal trends variation was also assessed through a comparative analysis of the various trend detection methods (both old and new tests). The new methods were used also to identify non-monotonic sub-trends. The results highlighted that (1) Morocco has experienced considerably larger variations regarding the temporal variability of precipitations and their spatial distribution during the last few decades; (2) the greatest variability of precipitation was observed moving latitudinally from humid to arid regions; (3) the annual precipitation exhibited positive and negative trends where there was no clear evidence of upward or downward trends. The significant trends are identified for 5(6,41%), 6 (7,69%), 3 (3,84%), and 65 (83%) stations from the results of the MK test, SR test, Onyutha's method, and ITA method, respectively. (4) the MK, SR, and Onyutha methods exhibited similar trends which indicate that are in perfect concordance. The ITA method showed also some resemblance with the results of other methods even though it proved to be over-sensitive in determining trend significance; and (5) the highlands with a Mediterranean climate are prone to flooding whereas the regions with desertic and semi-arid climates are prone to drought. Overall, our findings allow policy-makers to properly design adaptation strategies for changing precipitation patterns as well as increasing extreme events (floods and droughts).

Course‐based undergraduate research to advance environmental education, science, and resource management

Every year, field excursions engage students of ecology in experiential learning that results in wide‐ranging and well‐documented pedagogical benefits. Much less appreciated, however, is the potential for these excursions to contribute long‐term data that advance scientific knowledge and natural resource management. Here we explore this potential by providing a global synthesis of field data collection, mapping the geography, temporal extent, and type of data collected by students worldwide, and calling attention to the associated benefits and challenges for course instructors. We then offer perspectives on how undergraduate courses in ecology can more broadly contribute to science, management, and policy. Finally, we highlight how several aspects – namely, existing frameworks, resources, and networks; enhanced institutional support; and synergies with the broader science community – can help undergraduate ecology courses achieve their full potential for contributing to both education and science for society.

Managing Knowledge Resources in Family Firms: Opportunity or Challenge?

The purpose of this study was to explore the specificities of the relationship between knowledge management (KM) processes and the potential and realized absorptive capacities in the context of a knowledge-based view. The paper advances our understanding of the contributions of knowledge management processes and the potential and realized absorptive capacities in small- and medium-sized family firms. We draw on case studies of two small- and medium-sized family businesses operating in different industries. Our results show that the choice of the KM approach and the family business characteristics determine the extent to which a family firm is successful in managing its knowledge processes and absorptive capacity. Moreover, the results indicate that family businesses are impacted by their own characteristics, such as the fact that they do not dissociate between the personalities of the owners and the business, and are context-specific. Since the focus of this research was limited to KM processes and absorptive capacity, it would be beneficial for future research to investigate the mechanisms that enable firms to manage their potential and realized absorptive capacities and the extent to which they generate dynamic capabilities through KM processes. Further studies of the impacts of family business characteristics on the firm’s success in managing knowledge resources are also recommended.

Knowledge management effects and performance in health care: a systematic literature review

ABSTRACT Knowledge management is intended to achieve organisational goals through effective management of knowledge resources and performance. This paper presents a review of knowledge management effects and performance in health care. Six databases were searched, the searches employing Boolean operators and combinations of key words. In total, 16 articles fulfilled the criteria set for inclusion. Data were analysed using inductive content analysis. The review shows that in health care knowledge management effects and performance have been viewed from various perspectives: it has been linked to health care functions such as management, finance, patient care, quality and safety, IT, continued improvement of clinical operations, and organisational culture. However, the effects of knowledge management extend also to employees’ work, job satisfaction, learning, knowledge distribution, and productivity. This review aims to summarise the recent research on knowledge management effects and performance in health care. Some of the effects are universal and some are context-specific.

A SURVEY ON SEMANTIC ANNOTATION TOOLS FOR KNOWLEDGE MANAGEMENT

Support for information and knowledge exchange is a key issue in the information society. To reduce the time wasted in searching and to reduce associated user frustration much more selective user access is needed. This is possible by semantic information processing of online documents.Knowledge management in an organisation are used for managing knowledge resources in order to facilitate access and reuse of knowledge.Semantic annotation is about assigning to the entities in the text, links to their semantic descriptions. This sort of metadata provides both class and instance information about the entities. Semantic annotation is applicable for any type of textweb pages, regular documents etc. For semantic annotation, there are various manual, semiautomatic and full automatic tools are developed by various organizations like mindswap.org, ontotext.org etc. In this paper, we are presenting analysis and review of some of these tools according to their applicability for an application domain in knowledge management.Our review and analysis may help the research community in selecting an appropriate tool for extracting the relevent and desired information from huge knowledge base of an organisation.

Fostering employee's pro-environmental behavior through green transformational leadership, green human resource management and environmental knowledge

The study examines the role of green transformational leadership (GTL) in fostering pro-environmental behaviors (PEBs) through green human resource management (GHRM). In addition, a moderating role of environmental knowledge is also investigated. The partial least squares structural equation modeling (PLS-SEM) technique is employed to test the hypothesized relationships. The findings revealed the significance of GTL in predicting employees' PEBs through the mediating role of GHRM. Further, the moderating role of environmental knowledge is also confirmed. This study presents a thorough and synergistic comprehension of the process through which PEBs can be promoted. In doing so, the study offers a deeper understanding of the interconnected mechanisms that promote PEBs and eventually guide organizational practice.

Examining the performance outcome of intellectual capital: a parallel mediation analysis

PurposeThe current knowledge economy views firm competitive advantage from the strategic management of knowledge resources. Therefore, rooted in the resource-base view theory, this paper empirically investigated how organizational ambidexterity and innovative leadership behaviour mediate the relationship between intellectual capital (IC) and firm performance among small- and medium-scale enterprises (SMEs) in Ghana.Design/methodology/approachUsing purposive sampling, cross-sectional survey data was obtained from 244 SMEs in Ghana. Structural equation modelling was used in testing for the hypothesized relationships.FindingsFindings show that IC has a significant positive effect on firm performance. Additionally, innovative leadership behaviour and organizational ambidexterity have a parallel mediating effect on the relationship between IC and performance.Practical implicationsThe findings of the study have exposed managers of SMEs in Ghana to develop unique behavioural and organizational resources that facilitate competitive edge through strategic utilization of IC, leadership innovation and ambidexterity to produce superior performance.Originality/valueThis study is a pioneering one that uniquely investigated how innovative leadership behaviour and organizational ambidexterity play a parallel mediating role in the IC–performance nexus in a less-industrialized economy.

Sequential surface and subsurface flow modeling in a tropical aquifer under different rainfall scenarios

The La Miel River watershed is an area of high hydrological interest in Colombia due to its abundant water resources, high annual precipitation, and hydroelectric power generation. This work proposes a sequential modeling framework to quantify the spatially and temporally variable groundwater recharge and to analyze its impact on piezometric fluctuations in the study area, where the groundwater flow is affected by geological faults. Water Modeling Framework (WMF) and HydroGeoSphere (HGS) models have been used to calculate groundwater recharge and distribution of hydraulic heads, respectively. Recharge computed with WMF is used as input to HGS to compare groundwater flow 1) with uniform and spatially variable recharge, 2) with and without discrete fractures, and 3) during dry and wet conditions. The results generate valuable knowledge for water resource management and highlight the importance of groundwater recharge estimation and a proper representation of fractured aquifers.

Mastering new technologies: does it relate to teleworkers’ (in)voluntariness and well-being?

Purpose This study aims to examine the associations among mastering new technologies, teleworkers’ voluntariness and involuntariness and employee well-being (i.e. work engagement and exhaustion). To the best of the authors’ knowledge, no studies have explored the relationships among these constructs in the same conceptual model. Design/methodology/approach Data were collected from a sample of 451 individuals performing telework in Portugal. AMOS was used to test all hypotheses of the study. Findings The findings showed a positive relationship between mastering new technologies and teleworkers’ voluntariness and a negative relationship between mastering new technologies and teleworkers’ involuntariness. However, contrary to expectations, voluntariness in teleworking was not significantly related to either work engagement or exhaustion. However, consistent with the theoretical background of self-determination theory, involuntariness in teleworking was negatively related to work engagement and positively related to exhaustion. Originality/value This study contributes to the literature by addressing the analysis of telework-related variables that may impact workers’ well-being. Implications for human resource management policies and knowledge management are discussed.
