Interpersonal communication in the motor insurance sector during the claims stage

Orientation: The South African short-term motor insurance industry is highly competitive, offering clients many choices. Therefore, the long-term retention of clients is crucial for an insurance company’s sustainability.Research purpose: The study aims to report on the context-specific communication challenges during the claims stage and to propose recommendations to mitigate them from an interpersonal communication perspective.Motivation for the study: Studies on client retention have been conducted from a marketing or corporate communication perspective, but it is not known how interpersonal communication during the claims phase could impact long-term relationships.Research design, approach and method: We followed a qualitative approach, with a single case study design. Semi-structured interviews were conducted with senior management and claims administrators in the motor insurance department of a large South African insurer. The data were inductively analysed through qualitative content analysis from which the challenges were identified.Main findings: A lack of mutual understanding, ineffective conflict management, a lack of trust and one-way communication were identified as the main challenges experienced by claims administrators in their communication with clients during the claims stage.Practical/managerial implications: Practical principles such as sympathy and empathy, listening, feedback, respect, providing and clarifying information and providing access to resources, together with ethical and transparent communication, two-way symmetrical communication and dialogue should be included in claims administrators’ training to enable them to understand and adapt to the client’s needs.Contribution/value-add: A framework for training claims administrators operating in this context is presented, offering a theoretical and practical contribution.

Kemampuan Komunikasi Interpersonal Guru Dengan Siswa Dalam Pembelajaran IPS Di SMP 21 Kota Bengkulu

This research aims to determine the interpersonal communication skills of teachers and students in the social studies learning process at SMPN 21 Bengkulu City. The research method used was quantitative descriptive research with research subjects involving 36 class VIII students. Data collection techniques use observation, questionnaires and documentation. The research results show that the teacher's interpersonal communication skills with students in the learning process are quite good. This can be proven by the results of data analysis, the average calculation obtained is 66. Thus, it can be said that if a teacher is able to carry out good interpersonal communication, the students' communication skills in learning will also be higher, but on the contrary, if the teacher's interpersonal communication skills are still low, students' communication skills will also tend to be low. The conclusion from this research is that the teacher's interpersonal communication skills with class VIII students in the social studies learning process at SMPN 21 Bengkulu City are in the Good category. Research can be a basis for teachers to develop their insight and knowledge to improve students' communication skills in the learning process so that they are more effective.

A post-Brexit intergroup contact intervention reduces affective polarization between Leavers and Remainers short-term

With mounting evidence of the harmful societal consequences of affective polarization, it is crucial to find ways of addressing it. Employing a randomized controlled trial, this study tested the effectiveness of an intervention based on theories of intergroup contact and interpersonal communication in reducing affective polarization in the context of Brexit. Participants were 120 UK self-identified Leavers and Remainers. Sixty Leaver-Remainer dyads were randomized to engage in either a facilitated intergroup interaction or a control interaction, which was equivalent in structure and tone but was unrelated to Brexit identities. Different aspects of affective polarization were assessed one month prior, immediately after, and one month after the intervention. Results indicate that the intervention increased warmth toward the outgroup, reduced unfavourable attributions of the sources of outgroup positions, and increased willingness to compromise, but only short-term. There were no statistically significant longer-term effects of the intervention. Evidence of selective attrition further suggests that those with more extreme baseline opinions were more likely to drop out. Our findings highlight the challenges of designing effective interventions that engender enduring attitude change in polarized contexts and of engaging those with extreme political views. This study can provide a useful framework for future research.

Telemedicine and patient-centered care: The perspective of primary-care physicians.

Patient-centered care (PCC) has become a central aim for healthcare systems worldwide due to recognition of its advantages. The growing use of telemedicine technologies (TT) raises concerns of diminishing interpersonal contact, especially in primary care, and questions the appropriate way of implementing PCC. This article aims to explore primary-care physicians' (PCP) experiences of PCC when using TT. During 2023 in-depth interviews were conducted with 20 Israeli PCP: family physicians and pediatricians. The PCP described their experiences of using TT in their communication with patients as including some characteristics of PCC but not others. They related to TT as a means of forming relationships and communicating with patients, highlighting its individualistic focus and describing it as a way of coordinating care. When describing the use of TT in their communication with patients, they barely related to empathy and respect for the patient, to their own involvement in the treatment, to shared decision-making, or to a holistic focus on the patient. The absence of interpersonal qualities and soft skills communication from the physicians' TT experience seems to erode their personal well-being and professional satisfaction and may even lead to burnout. We therefore recommend instructing PCP to better integrate PCC into their TT communication with patients since it contributes to the quality of healthcare and is significant for the well-being of both patients and physicians.

Efektivitas Komunikasi Interpersonal Antara Guru dan Siswa dalam Proses Belajar Mengajar di SMK Negeri 7 Ambon

Effectiveness of interpersonal communication (interpersonal) in the teaching and learning process to realize the ideals of national education, which in the end the quality of implementation lies in the hands of the teacher. As for the teaching and learning process, the source message can be delivered from students, teachers, and so on. With interpersonal communication in a persuasive and effective manner, communication between teachers and students in the teaching and learning process can help motivation and encourage students to move in a positive direction. The purpose of this study was to determine how the effectiveness of teacher and student interpersonal communication in the teaching and learning process at SMK Negeri 7 Ambon and to find out what factors could be a constraint on the effectiveness of teacher and student interpersonal communication in the teaching and learning process at SMK Negeri 7 Ambon. This study uses qualitative research with data collection techniques are observation and interview techniques. From the results of this study, it was seen that students sometimes did not understand the material provided by the teacher and had difficulty in making assignments because the way the material was delivered by the teacher was considered unclear by students. And the personal closeness between students and teachers, so that it also affects the teaching and learning process in the classroom.

Factors Affecting the Implementation of Blended Learning Modality

Blended learning is relatively new in public schools in the Philippines, yet its increasing demand highlights notable challenges hindering effective teaching and learning. In this context, this study aims to assess the factors influencing the implementation of blended learning at medium-sized School Division within a highly urbanized city in Central Philippines, during the School Year 2022-2023. Employing descriptive and quantitative research methods, a 30-item survey questionnaire was administered to ninety-six (96) teachers. Findings reveal low factors affecting the implementation of blended learning in teaching-learning resources and ICT skills. In contrast, moderate levels were observed in stakeholders’ support, interpersonal communication skills, and self-management skills. Furthermore, significant differences were noted in the level of ICT skills based on educational attainment and teaching experience. These results offer insights for enhancing current policies and guidelines for blended learning implementation. Application of digital transformation tools in dairy cattle farming and their role in improving population health and animal productivity

The aim of the study is to explore the ways of implementing digital technologies and modern technical solutions to ensure the population health of animals in the context of contemporary dairy farming. The paper discusses modern digital technical tools and automated processes in dairy farming facilitated by these tools. In the course of the study, the main tasks for successful digital transformation and ensuring the population health of animals in dairy farming were identified: searching for biomarkers of pathological and physiological states of animals, developing methods for determining found biomarkers, developing technical solutions for parameter registration and their implementation into production. At the moment, automatic systems for diagnosing the state of the animal’s body have been implemented using sound sensors, devices for determining the activity of the animal and the position of the body in space. Sensors for determining the electrical conductivity of milk make it possible to determine mastitis at the initial stage of the pathological process. Sensors for determining the concentration of hormones in milk make it possible to determine the period of the sexual cycle. ICS cameras allow you to determine areas of inflammation on the animal’s body. A modern 3-D camera system, combined with software, allows automatic measurement of animal body parameters on a daily basis. Thus, the implemented automated systems make it possible to reduce the time of human contact with an animal, which has a positive effect on the health of the animal. On the other hand, constant monitoring of important indicators of animal health allows timely detection of the onset of the disease. All of the above helps ensure population health on dairy farms.

Transformational Leadership, Interpersonal Communication, Information and Communication Technology Literacy, and Knowledge Management

The purpose of this research is to identify strategies to enhance school effectiveness by strengthening transformational leadership, interpersonal communication, ICT literacy, and knowledge management. A quantitative method with path analysis was applied, and SITOREM analysis was used to optimize each indicator. The study involved 445 teachers from private vocational schools in Depok City, with a sample of 211 teachers. The findings reveal that school effectiveness can be improved by reinforcing transformational leadership, interpersonal communication, ICT literacy, and knowledge management. Key strategies include addressing weak indicators such as feedback, empathy, knowledge application, and access. Statistical tests show significant positive direct effects of: 1) transformational leadership on school effectiveness (Sig=0.032), 2) interpersonal communication on school effectiveness (Sig=0.000), 3) ICT literacy on school effectiveness (Sig=0.001), and 4) knowledge management on school effectiveness (Sig=0.001). Additionally, transformational leadership, interpersonal communication, and ICT literacy all positively affect knowledge management. Knowledge management serves as an effective mediator for the influence of transformational leadership (Sig=0.004) and interpersonal communication (Sig=0.001) on school effectiveness, but not for ICT literacy (Sig=0.356).

Increasing Organizational Commitment of Lecturers Through Strengthening, Organization Support, Adversity Intelligence, Interpersonal Communication and Job Satisfaction” (Empirical Study Using Path Analysis Techniques and SITOREM Analysis on Lecturers of Universitas Muhammadiyah Tangerang), This study aims to produce strategies and ways to increase Organizational Commitment of Lecturers through strengthening the variables of Adversity Intelligence and Adversity Intelligence as independent variables and the variables of Interpersonal Communication and Job Satisfaction as intervening variables. The sample was selected based on the Slovin formula from a population of 462 resulting in a total of 215 samples taken by proportional random sampling in 32 Study Programs at Universitas Muhammadiyah Tangerang. This study used a survey method with a path analysis approach and continued with SITOREM analysis.

Biodegradation of Heterogeneous Industrial Multi-Walled Carbon Nanotubes by Pro-Inflammatory Macrophages.

Industrial multi-walled carbon nanotubes (ig-MWCNTs) make up the majority of carbon nanomaterials, and human contact with them is the most probable. At the same time, the biodegradation of ig-MWCNTs by phagocytes has not been studied-existing articles consider mainly laboratory-grade/functionalized MWCNTs (l-MWCNTs), in contrast to which ig-MWCNTs are a highly heterogeneous nanomaterial in terms of morphological and physicochemical characteristics. The aim of the present study was to analyze ig-MWCNTs' biodegradation by proinflammatory macrophages. We focused on both extra- and intracellular ig-MWCNTs' degradation. We analyzed biodegradation of two different types of ig-MWCNTs by human (THP-1) and murine (RAW264.7) macrophages. After 10 days of incubation, we studied nanoparticle localization within cells; isolated intra- and extracellular ig-MWCNTs were used for quantitative analysis. Ultrastructural and morphometric analysis were performed using transmission electron microscopy; electron diffraction was used for nanotube identification. To estimate chemical alterations, energy-dispersive X-ray spectroscopy and Raman spectroscopy were used. The study showed that both intra- and extracellular ig-MWCNTs undergo almost complete biodegradation, but in different ways: intracellular nanotubes become perforated and reduce to graphene flakes, while extracellular become thinner. We believe that the demonstrated variability in the destruction of ig-MWCNTs by cells suggests the possibility of creating nanomaterials with controlled biodegradation properties.

Experiences of People With Persistent Nonspecific Neck Pain Who Used Immersive Virtual Reality Serious Games in the Home Setting: A Qualitative Study.

The purpose of this study was to explore the experiences of individuals with persistent nonspecific neck pain who used immersive virtual reality (VR) serious games at home for 2weeks. In this descriptive qualitative study, semi-structured one-on-one interviews were conducted at the participant's home after the 2-week period. Interviews were analyzed using qualitative content analysis. Sample size was determined using the information power concept (where "information power" refers to the amount of relevant information the sample provides for addressing the research question). Eleven adults with continuous or recurrent nonspecific neck pain participated in the study. Three main categories were identified. The first revolves around the home environment, revealing that participants had mixed perceptions about being at home, yet held a positive perspective on the utilization of immersive VR in that setting. The second pertains to immersive VR as a novel technology, indicating its overall comfort, user-friendliness, and varying degrees of immersion and presence experienced by the participants. The third focuses on exercising in immersive VR, drawing comparisons with conventional exercises, exploring the facilitators and barriers to usage, and addressing various aspects of integrating this technology into rehabilitation. Immersive VR was deemed comfortable for almost all participants and easy to use. Participants found exercising in immersive VR motivating and enjoyable, compared to conventional exercises. The home environment proved suitable for using immersive VR, though challenges included autonomy and reduced human contact. Participants highlighted facilitators and barriers in using immersive VR serious games, as well as immersive VR's rehabilitation potential. They also underscored the crucial role of physical therapists for guidance, remote supervision, and personalized treatment. These findings could help clinicians to better understand the experiences of individuals with persistent nonspecific neck pain when using immersive VR, as well as its use at home. This understanding can improve patient care and optimize the effectiveness of immersive VR as a treatment method.

Association between health communication on integrated healthcare and primary healthcare visits among rehabilitation outpatients: A multicenter cross-sectional study in China

ObjectiveThis study examines the relationship between health communication on integrated healthcare and primary healthcare visits among rehabilitation outpatients in China. MethodsA multi-stage sampling scheme was used to select the rehabilitation outpatients as study participants. A total of 3415 participants from 21 medical institutions in seven cities in China were included in the final analysis. The measurement included primary healthcare visits, health communication on integrated healthcare, and basic characteristics (age, sex, educational level, marital status, household income, and diagnoses). The association between health communication on integrated healthcare and primary healthcare visits was modeled using logistic regression controlling the general characteristics and disease status. ResultsAmong 3415 rehabilitation outpatients, the mean age of participants was 45.3 years (SD:24.9), and more than half (54.0 %) were male. The majority (56.3 %) were diagnosed with orthopaedic disorders. Received information of integrated healthcare from organizational communication (OR = 2.00; 95 % CI = 1.56, 2.56) and interpersonal communication (OR = 6.03; 95 % CI = 2.49, 14.62), patients who had a higher level of knowledge on integrated healthcare (OR = 1.02; 95% CI = 1.00, 1.03), the interaction terms of ‘organizational communication ∗ knowledge’(OR = 0.98; 95 % CI = 0.97, 1.00), and ‘interpersonal communication ∗ knowledge’(OR = 0.92; 95 % CI = 0.87, 0.97) were associated with visiting primary healthcare initially when had an illness the last two weeks. ConclusionThis study indicated that rehabilitation outpatients display a low level of primary healthcare visits, calling for interpersonal-based health communication interventions to be implemented to improve their integrated healthcare knowledge and promote better primary healthcare visits practices in China.

‘What’s in it for us?’ How Inclusive Behavior Benefits Interpersonal Communication at Work

This article examines how inclusive behavior affects communication on an interpersonal level while presenting a perspective on how these effects are created and obtained. We present our findings through a multiple case study design of the positive communication benefits attributed to inclusive behaviors while generating a better understanding of how and when these benefits occur. This contribution could help organizations identify the value of practicing inclusion and guide them toward acquiring the benefits of inclusive behavior. The article also suggests that informal learning plays a substantial role in reaping interpersonal benefits due to the practice of inclusive behavior in work-related settings.

A guided twin delayed deep deterministic reinforcement learning for vaccine allocation in human contact networks

This manuscript introduces an innovative approach to optimizing the distribution of a limited vaccine resource within a population modeled as a contact network, aiming to mitigate the spread of infectious diseases. The study develops a novel methodology that combines reinforcement learning and graph neural networks. To understand the dynamics of disease propagation, the study constructs an analytical model that outlines conditions for disease eradication or endemic states. This model supports a series of simulation experiments across various scenarios, demonstrating the proposed method’s superiority over random and centrality-based approaches in reducing the average number of infections per individual during an outbreak. The adaptability of the proposed method is further emphasized by its robust performance across networks of diverse sizes and configurations, highlighting its real-world applicability. The findings of this study have significant implications for public health policy and resource allocation, offering a promising framework for managing infectious disease outbreaks in complex and dynamic environments.

Epidemiological and clinical aspects of syphilis incidence in the Russian Federation and the Kyrgyz Republic: comparative analysis

The Soviet period of development of domestic dermatovenereology was characterized by scientific achievements and the creation of organizational forms of combating venereal and contagious skin diseases. After the collapse of the USSR, socio-economic changes occurred in the former Soviet republics that affected the medical sphere. In recent years, the integration of dermatovenereologists with representatives of related specialties has increased and cooperation in the exchange of experience between dermatovenereological services of Russia and other countries is actively developing, including in the field of prevention of the spread of STIs. In 2021 and 2022, a significant increase (by 69.7%) in the incidence of syphilis was registered in Russia for the first time compared to 2020, which is due to an increase in this indicator among migrants (from 2801 cases in 2020 to 12748 cases in 2022), of which 30% of syphilis cases were among citizens of Kyrgyzstan. The article presents the results of a retrospective comparative study of syphilis incidence rates among children aged 0 to 14 years, adolescents aged 15 to 17 years, and adults over 18 years in the Russian Federation and the Kyrgyz Republic, and analyzes regulatory documents governing syphilis testing and treatment. Despite significant similarities in approaches to laboratory diagnostics of syphilis, including neurosyphilis, uniform principles of prenatal examination of women and treatment of pregnant women, there are currently a number of significant differences, including shorter courses of therapy and low doses of drugs, shorter periods of clinical and serological monitoring in the Kyrgyz Republic.

Recent advances in the study of serpentine plants and ecosystems: Perspectives from the 10th International Conference on Serpentine Ecology, France: Part II

AbstractThe 10th International Conference on Serpentine Ecology was held in Nancy, France on June 12–16, 2023. The main goals of the conference were to create a platform for the exchange of ideas and experiences and to promote scientific dialogue among scientists from numerous fields who share expertise in the study of ultramafic habitats worldwide. The proceedings of the conference are being published as two Special Issues of Ecological Research, of which this is the second. In this article, we present the major topics and provide some highlights of the contributions to the 10th International Conference on Serpentine Ecology.

The effect of power states on negative word‐of‐mouth sharing: The role of interpersonal closeness

AbstractThe current research investigates whether, when, and why power states, a prevalent experience in everyday life, influence negative WOM (NWOM). The authors find that low‐power consumers tend to engage more in NWOM, and this effect is driven by less image‐impairment concerns and heightened motives to protect others induced by low‐power states. We further showed that interpersonal closeness (IC)—people' feeling of proximity between they and others—moderates the positive effect of low‐power states on NWOM sharing. That is, the differences of sharing NWOM between low‐power and high‐power consumers are attenuated when facing high IC. To account for this, both image‐impairment concerns and motives to protect others mediate the effect of power states when recipients are interpersonally close others; however, only image‐impairment concerns mediate the effect of power states when recipients are interpersonally distant others. These findings make theoretical contributions to research in interpersonal communication, WOM, and power, and holds practical implications for marketers interested in understanding how NWOM spreads.
