Currently, various approaches to understanding the category "sustainable development" have been formed in the scientific community. This required the systematization and generalization of scientific-theoretical concepts to the phenomenon of this scientific category. The topical relevance of the article is connected with the growing interest of the world scientific community in achieving sustainability in the development of multi-level economic systems. The purpose of the article is to generalize scientific and theoretical concepts on achieving sustainable development of industrial systems and clarify the definition of the specified economic category taking into account the trends formed in different fields of activity. The article uses description, comparative analysis, deduction and induction, generalization as research methods. In the article, the main provisions of the theory of sustainable development are systematized, which allowed to specify its basic terminological apparatus. First, it is shown that in sustainable development, both the category "sustainability" and the category "development" should be distinguished equally. Secondly, stability is proposed to be understood as the ability of elements, subsystems and the system as a whole to return to the balance state, which is favorable for the fulfillment of the goals and tasks assigned to the system, taking into account the limitations and the action of various factors, i.e. The basic components of stability are balance, stability factor and constraints. Based on the results of the study, it is summarized that the sustainable development of an industrial enterprise should be understood as a multifaceted economic category that characterizes the ability of the enterprise to preserve and improve its initial state, taking into account the action of restrictions, as well as factors of internal and external influence. It is proven that the advanced model of sustainable development of the enterprise has a quintile nature of equivalent interrelated components - economic, ecological, social, technological and digital. Levels of sustainable development are divided into mega, macro, meso and micro levels. Economic, investment, technological, energy, logistics, digital, intellectual and other factors are proposed to be distinguished among the factors of sustainable development of the enterprise (by spheres of influence in the structure of the economy and society). The results of the research, presented in the article, can be used in the development of the scientific-theoretical concept of sustainability of industrial systems.
